3) Orks are really wacky and fun, I would recomend them if you're playing to have fun. 1) Space marines are fun to play. At least for me. Different people like different things though.
2) More important then the list at newbie level is a solid grasp of the rules and the game. Don’t forget stuff, keep an eye on the mission/objectives, and don’t screw up. Any special rules/restrictions for your tournament?
3) Generally you should go with the army you like. You are going to spend a lot of time and money on them, so it should be something you enjoy. Also, consider how competitive your local meta is. For a bunch of guys playing at a friendly/semi-competitive level, everyone can make a decent list. Once the cheese comes out and people start making the most viscous list they can, then the pack starts to spread out a bit.

There are as many marine lists as there are players. Which one to use depends a lot on what you want.
