With each new 7th edition release we seem to be creeping closer to some kind of end times. Even the Blood Angels have the myth around the sanguinor being Sanguinius.

Even Guilliman himself doubted that Alpharius was truly dead. Alpharius would undoubtedly want everyone to believe he is dead, so it is quite possible he staged the whole thing.
A fan theory even says that it was Guilliman who was killed and that Alpharius took his place as Primarch of the Ultramarines, ready to destroy the Imperium from the inside out, only to have his entire plan crashed by Fulgrim.

Unless Fulgrim was in on it, and made it seem like he'd poisoned him enough to go into stasis. Then when he wakes up 10,000 years later there is no one alive who would know it isn't Guilliman........
