I'm sure some of the highest Magos are adepts of several fields, but why would they change their branch when they already have a title and a secure position? If you've read Priests of Mars, by Graham Mcniell, it actually goes into this a fair amount of detail regarding this. The Martian Adepts have different fields of study, which they use as qualifications for different jobs. For example, you need to have certain Hexamathic (I know, terrible lingo, the pseudo-scientific words in that book give me cancer) qualifications to be a Navigator for an AdMech ship, for example. Really though, if anything they would mirror the academic politics of modern universities only turned up to eleven, with extra grimdark.

The Ordo Reductor takes in most of the Adepts/Magi, that are seen as dangerous, independent and a little nuts. And one benefit with that comes with that branch is less restrictions regarding science and engineering.
Allthought, most Magi/Adepts stay, where they are.
