So, A thought occurred to me when thinking about all the different sub-factions in the mechanicus. How many diffrenet branches is a tech priest open to learn in? like, can a Tech priest be part of the Legio Cybernetica and later become an electro priest? Or could a Magos Biologist become a master of the Ordo reductor?

"Do you really think 7th edition was the best edition?"

"Yes, and I'm tired of thinking otherwise."

Changing disciplines in the Mechanicum would be a decades-long project because there's so much to learn in the process. You'd also have to get permission from your current master (nigh impossible) and prove yourself to the master you wish to switch to (even harder).

Not to mention that you'd also have to undergo substantial surgery if your current implants don't line up with requirements for your intended role..... especially relevant for disciplines like the fulminaris electropriests.

So basically you have to do a grimdark version of today's changing colleges? makes sense, but what if someone already mastered one aspect of their current field? would they be able to go into a different one?

I'm sure some of the highest Magos are adepts of several fields, but why would they change their branch when they already have a title and a secure position? They'll learn new things, maybe write up some dissertations for the masters in that field and ask for honorary membership.

So basically instead of going into a new "Trade" they just study it? so like, a Cybernetica could learn ordo reductor or something?

If you've read Priests of Mars, by Graham Mcniell, it actually goes into this a fair amount of detail regarding this. The Martian Adepts have different fields of study, which they use as qualifications for different jobs. For example, you need to have certain Hexamathic (I know, terrible lingo, the pseudo-scientific words in that book give me cancer) qualifications to be a Navigator for an AdMech ship, for example. They even bring in a specialist for the Explorator mission, who shows up the Speranza's Navigator, and pisses him off.

The Mechanicus seems fairly meritocratic, with no real "dynasties" that I've seen in my reading. In Titanicus, it's mentioned that the Adept Seniorus of a hive was elected between several candidates, and that young apprentices are capable of choosing their fields of study from early on (source: the apprentice who was studying to become an Executor, and talked about how that career wouldn't let him get the bionics he wanted)
I see no reason why shifting fields of study would be banned. After all, the Mechanicus seems fairly reasonable and democratic.

If by "reasonable and democratic" you mean "irrational and dogmatic" sure.

Really though, if anything they would mirror the academic politics of modern universities only turned up to eleven, with extra grimdark.
So the students and apprentices are pretty open and enthusiastic, the journeymen are put-upon and repressed, the masters are tyrannical and outrageous, and the grand masters have moved beyond all that, to the truly arcane arts of economics and resource management.

Oh, no, it's just that I've seen people use the same terms to describe the US American government with a straight face so I thought it best to be sure….

The Ordo Reductor takes in most of the Adepts/Magi, that are seen as dangerous, independent and a little nuts. And one benefit with that comes with that branch is less restrictions regarding science and engineering.
Allthought, most Magi/Adepts stay, where they are. Especially Myrmidae.

How do you think a magos becomes an Ordinator? Showing affinity for gigantic weapons systems? A penchant for innovative solutions? What?
