[750] - Space Marines - Choose Chapter

Hey Dakka,
Drafted up a small 750point space marine list I'm going to be playing with in a doubles tourney soon: opponents generated on the day so everyone has to be as TAC as possible.
No hyper competitive lists that I know of, but a few players I know will be looking to lay down some hurt.
Games will be objective based, so please bear in mind when offering criticism; I'm aware list doesn't exactly lay down the most unwitherable firepower.

areas for help are which chapter tactics? if special weapons should be used?, and the HQ slot?

the core of the force is 3 Razorbacks with assault cannons, thunderfire cannon, 2 unupgraded 6 man tactical squads, and a stormtalon gunship with the twin-linked lascannon.
they're painted ultramarines (2nd company)(surprise), though I can use whichever chapter tactics I want.

the contenders are:

Ultramarines, either using Sicarius to eat challenges and help the Stormtalon come in with reserves fethery, maybe infiltrate up a tactical squad?

White Scars, using Kor'sarro Khan to confer 'Scouts' to white scars in razorbacks, thus conferring infiltrate, and critically: outflank, to the majority of the force? also eating other HQ's alive.

Iron hands: using vanilla captain with sword/burning blade as a beatstick: but giving FNP to my moderate contingent of infantry, and IWND to 4 vehicles and a character?

Thoughts Dakka?
you guys always seem to come through for me, as ever all comments and criticisms appreciated!
(Yes, one razorback will be containing JUST the HQ choice, Riding solo for some space marine Heroics) (nothing at all to do with the lack of points for an entourage)

Leaning towards the Scars personally, if only for the mass outflank gimic deployment, starting with only a thunderfire tucked away, before 3 tanks and a flier join the battle from the edges...

Cheers in advance people;
GamerGuy

was it the list format guys?
(apologies, was under considerable time restraint)

(Core
Troops:
Tactical Squad
additional marine
Razorback
Twin-linked Assault Cannon

Tactical Squad
additional marine
Razorback
Twin-linked Assault Cannon

Fast Attack:
Razorback
Twin-linked Assault Cannon

Stormtalon Gunship
Twin-linked Lascannon

Heavy Support:
Thunderfire Cannon

------------------------------------
have removed ultramarines and sicarius from the runnings;
do we think Khan is worth the 125pts price tag for outflank deployment? or should I take 125pts worth of captain and Iron Hands to make infantry a little tougher and confer IWND to my vehicles?

Cheers,
GamerGuy

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Update:
Just received a text message, points are being upped to 1k by popular demand... I don't have the minis (new army) unless I run Calgar... thoughts? play gunline tactics; then use calgar as assault deterrant? maybe run an aegis defence line to protect razors, play for the ranged firefight? got double access to one doctrine + one of the other two if I run calgar, so fire should be efficient, and calgar should eat anything alive that gets too close in 1000pts?

Can you see this being remotely viable? or should I just drop out?
GamerGuy

1st bare marines without upgrades are a waste,
You should add something to them
2nd if you count on razors i would advice to add following:
Make tacsquads 5 man with lascannon
Add a devastator squad with 4 missile launchers and herubim
As HQ add a tech marine with servo harness or a comersion beamer (on bike is better)
With this you will have a gunn line with both anti horde and ani elite/vehicles
With two tech marines you can gave two ruins in your deployment confer a 3+ cover save
Tech marines can repair razors
Thunderfire cannon is a god-like by itself
Tactics can be IH for better repairs and IWND or ultramarines for rerols

hey; thanks for the pointers!

few quiries, if you're open to discuss...

1st Bare Marines were 6 to max out the transport capacity, thy only need to sit on objectives, I'm not counting on them killing anything? throwing a lascannon in would be appealing, but there's no firing points on a razor? and if they're on foot due to transport destruction or necessity to capture objectives: surely a weapon that can be fired on the move would be better?

2nd /\

3rd Devastators seem best with grav cannons in a pod? if buying new units I can be specific on how I loadout...

4th I was only having to gunline due to having to run calgar in place of Khan. khan makes those razors hella mobile? for future low point games (750?) would you recommend swapping Khan out for a cheaper hq like Chronus, and spending the bonus points upgrading the tactical squads?

[750] - Space Marines - Choose Chapter

If you are just taking naked marines as a tax, they will never do anything but die. Give them some tools, and you will be surprised by what they can accomplish. If you just want 5 naked guys with bolters, take scouts. They at least get a lot of special rules to help out.

If you are taking TLAsC razors, you want to move them up aggressively. I’d put a 5 man squad with a melta/c-melta sarge in there.

Don’t bother with an empty razor. You are not getting them for free, and they are pretty fragile for their points. I’d rather take a TML/HB speeder for the points, or scrape a few more up and get a real tank. The speeder might be more fragile on paper, but can jink, fire better on the move, and hang back at a safe distance. So probably has a better chance of survival.

I prefer the skyhammers on my talon, by can see a desire of the TLLC.

Adding Devs is not a bad call. Podding grav is good, better with formations or a CTDA captain. Another option would be to stick 2 grav cannons in a rhino and move them up with the tacs, shooting out the top hatch. Or just go with a classic camping build of 4xLC in some ruins.

You have a lot of ways you can go with your list. It’s hard to give specific advice. Different chapters play differently, and the style strikes people in various ways. What sounds fun to you?

One thing you might want to do is give formations a good look, especially if you want to get competitive. It would require a complete re-work of your list though.

because of razorbacks, they have no firing points, and if you drive more than 6" razor has to fire snapshots, with 48" range of lascannon you can sit on objective and pop up enemy vehicles or MC while your razors kill infantry\bikes\lots of things
for the price of las cannon you can switch to melta\combi melta for both tac squads, but in this case it will be better to take a rhino or drop pod (much better imho)

3rd use magnets! it is not that difficult) or buy tac squad and two dev boxes and you have guys with all sorts of heavy guns
Devs with grav guns are god in pods, especially if you give them relentless and rerolls to hit, but in regular CAD I will take centurions over them, because of semi-relentless, 2+ save, splitfire, ignoring night fight and additional bolter shots from armpit mounted bolters)

4th so you already had a game you were preparing for? tell us how it was going, what armies were opposing you, what targets were difficult for you?
Khan is a good HQ, using him to make mediocre razors a little bit better? he is pricey for a 750 pts army, he actually shines in gladius when you take tons of rhinos with grav cannons and some meltaguns support

as a general advice on how to change you army to be more solid I prefer this:
- get rid of razors make a rhinos from them, razors die too easy to invest points in them
- load out your tacs as following: melta\combi-melta or plasma\combi plasma or solo grav cannon
- get yourself a drop-pod, it is always useful, since 5th edition, put a melta squad in it
- (not sure about this) change las cannons on Storm Talon for skyhammer misseles, three 60" S7 ap4 shots is a good thing and is ceaper than las
- get your self a rapid response squad, bike squad with double grav or scouts with LS storm or regular LS with bolters or multimeltas ( i personaly use both bikers and scouts with shotguns in LS storm with HF)
- if you take biker librarian ( a good generic HQ btw) you can take bikers as troops so they get obsec
- TFC is a masterpiece imho, nothing to add here
- when making a list think what you can do with it and can it deal with common types of targets?
LR (AV13 -14 should be dealt with melta or (less effective) las cannons)
light transports like rhino (S6 or S7 in numbers)
Light infantry ( bolters(sic!) and TFC, flamers)
elite infantry (2+ 3+ saves - gav + plasma for them)
and what you can do to counter same tools from opponent

hope this will help you

wow sorry guys response is late, been a hectic few days!

thanks for the feedback, I've altered the list as follows:

Added another small Tactical Squad

Tactical Squads now have matching Combis and special weapons, to make the list as TAC as possible, there's one flamer, one plasma and one melta.

Yup, Khan was an attempt to take the mediocre Razors and make a slightly more genuine threat, while also bringing a character, which I was hoping would be dangerous at these points. he's been dropped sadly due to a lost ebay auction :(

you've all been a great help, will keep the community posted as the army evolves and gets somemore action on the tabletop!

Cheers,
GamerGuy

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Update;
Just acquired a 30th anniversary 'Imperial Marine' from a friend

-which Tactical Squad should I stick him in?
Combi-Plasma & Plasmagun
Combi-Melta & Meltagun
Combi-Flamer & Flamer

Disintegrator weaponry seems to synergise best with Plasma loadout?

Cheers,
GamerGuy
