I'm still at the beggining of the Horus Heresy series so I don't know the state of degenerency of the Traitors at the end of the Heresy, but I guess that they are closer to Chaos Marines than legionaries.

The point I was making was that most of the space marines were completely unaware of chaos and were mostly driven by hate of the imperium and loyalty to their primarch.
