Pretty sure the message still rings true, you go by the majority toughness, do you not? And you are supposed to target the closest, no? So in essence you can make them target a more durable model.

The index indicates what can be part of a unit aswell. While you can have units grouped together and move alongside eachother, you always go by the index and it will provide the stats for that unit. Generally speaking, most units have some form of stat coherence to prevent issues with multiple toughness, you just roll different weapons separately. However, if you have a character placed within a unit, the base rule is that your character can only be a target if it is the closest threat, thus if surrounded by a unit of infantry, it will not be the closest. Ofcourse, some abilities can supercede this.

Also, it has the ruling of Mixed Unit on its datasheet. Like I said, the Index will usually give you the errata for mixed units if it needs it. Mixed Unit as per Deathwatch Kill Team:

Mixed Unit

"A Deathwatch Kill Team can contain models with different Toughness characteristics. If this is the case, use the Toughness of the majority of the models in the unit when the enemy makes wound rolls against it. If there is no majority, the the Deathwatch player may choose which of the values is used."

The unit also contains the keyword of any models used, e.g. Terminator if it contains a Terminator or Biker if it contains a Biker.

But as per the toughness, if your Kill Team has less Bikers than any other models, the unit has T4. If Bikers is half the unit then you decide the Toughness of the unit. If Bikers are the majority then the unit has T5.
