Between the Resident Evil 2/3/4 remakes, Dead Space, a new Halo coming soon, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, and all the remasters and re-releases that aren't outright remakes, nostalgia for 2000s titles is huge.

The people who were teenagers in that era are now adults with disposable income, so it makes sense.

And there we have it. That's the one I played as a carefree kid (and also as a stressed out student, and as a depressed adult)

The XCOM you played in your childhood in the early 2010s was a remake, a remake made by someone who went to study computer science specifically with the goal of making a worthy X-com remake, and made enough of a name for himself that when he shared his dream with his boss, his boss bought him the license. And thusly was made XCOM, the only worthy remake of anything ever. And the first video game I paid retail price on since probably 1998... but not because it was an X-com remake, those were a dime a dozen at the time... but because the authors cited Necromunda as an inspiration for the new mechanics.

X-com is good gak and has always been made by people passionate to make the best gak ever.
Re:XCOM The Miniatures Game from Modiphius

A bit out of the blue but very much in Modiphius' wheelhouse. Be interesting to see what the scope of the game is and whether they feel it justifies plastic kits for the core sets (something that they're really getting off the ground now with Fallout). Actually a bit surprised that it's being pitched as a miniature wargame as my initial instinct would be that a board-gamey, objective based hex-tile style setup would have been the obvious transition for X-Com. Certainly not an unpleasant surprise though.

Probably itching to get some extra use out of those Mass Effect models in a skirmish style game down the line as well. Hopefully they can juggle all the IP-licensed products they're racking up these days; Elder Scrolls already feels like it's fallen off a cliff. Thankfully both Fallout games are seemingly doing very well (and that Wasteland Warfare 2nd Edition is shaping up nicely).

Ivan Sorenson (Five Parsecs/Five Leagues) mentioned a while back that he was working on some secret project for Modiphius, after the Paranoia game was announced. I'm hoping this is it, because he's always cited XCOM (both eras) as inspiration. He'd also nail the strategic campaign layer.

X-com came out in 1994 and for a lot of people, myself included, it's still the best game of all time. Some 30-odd years on, and the BGM sting in Terror from the Deep can still make me jump out of my chair.

What I can't wait to see is proper Sectoid-style gray alien minis. Scrawny child-sized ones. I'll buy anything Modiphius puts out in STL for sure, especially Sectoids and a Skyranger I.

I very much hope Wave 1 starts with XCOM1 - or even X-COM UFO Defense, though I suspect the more current version of the license will hold sway. XCOM2 is an amazing game that definitely refined and improved the videogame's system, mechanics, and campaign...but we need to start at the traditional XCOM start...a small combined military forces with science and manufacturing departments, carrying out secret ops to study and combat the growing alien menace.

Because all that other stuff is hobby, and you want to.

Also, the Five X series tends to be emergent narrative campaign generators attached to a solo/co-op wargame. Being a solo/co-op experience, there's much more leeway to tweak, change, or houserule without regard to army/scenario balance as in PvP wargaming. So, invent a new alien species or tech. Write your own three-mission mini-campaign/quest. Add boss monsters from Five Leagues from the Borderlands. Add tank combat from Five Parsecs: Tactics. Use Five Parsecs player species to see what XCOM would be like with friendly alien allies. Come up with your own underwater combat rules and recreate Terror from the Deep. Your table, your story, your game.
