Interesting

I really see a lot of the 2010s-ish era of games coming back out in various forms now. Are we just massively in that nostalgia era for gamers now?

I makes sense, I was but a carefree kid living my best life playing games like XCom and Mass Effect at the time. I'm now an adult with money looking back fondly on those times with a desire to recapture the spirit.

It's currently a strong enough market force that contemporary pop culture feels like an ouroboros of cannibalizing older properties, especially in games. Between the Resident Evil 2/3/4 remakes, Dead Space, a new Halo coming soon, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, and all the remasters and re-releases that aren't outright remakes, nostalgia for 2000s titles is huge.

The people who were teenagers in that era are now adults with disposable income, so it makes sense.

Spoiler:
The game needs to come with special dice that, when you need a 2+, only roll 1s.

And there we have it. My white whale wargaming IP.

If this is the one managed by Ash Barker I will lose my mind.

Sit down, children, and let grandpa blackfang tell you a story.

X-com came out in 1994 and for a lot of people, myself included, it's still the best game of all time. That's the one I played as a carefree kid (and also as a stressed out student, and as a depressed adult)

The XCOM you played in your childhood in the early 2010s was a remake, a remake made by someone who went to study computer science specifically with the goal of making a worthy X-com remake, and made enough of a name for himself that when he shared his dream with his boss, his boss bought him the license. And thusly was made XCOM, the only worthy remake of anything ever. And the first video game I paid retail price on since probably 1998... but not because it was an X-com remake, those were a dime a dozen at the time... but because the authors cited Necromunda as an inspiration for the new mechanics.

X-com is good gak and has always been made by people passionate to make the best gak ever. First person to bring up Enforcer gets buried in the woods behind my house.

I will throw money at this if they manage to represent the games in any worthwhile way.

I suspect this probably falls into the "I'd rather play Infinity" bucket for me, but its definitely got some serious potential.

I thought there was already an XCOM game unless this is going to be more like a Kill Team experience.

Fewer models, smaller play area? But then....where's the fun in it if you don't have a Fog of War effect?

That's what made the games (both the 1994 and 2010 remake) great is that you didn't know where the enemy units were...

There's just a co-op board game that needs an app to play, with mins to allocate your forces on a map ala Risk, I think it has 1 soldier sculpt and 1 interceptor sculpt

Ahhhh ok, I never played it but I assumed it was a multiple miniatures game

The current boardgame is a coop game that focuses on the 'strategic' part of the game (the base building, research, and troop management).
One player plays the scientist, one the engineer, one the first officer, and one the commander.
I've only played it once but quite liked it

I've looked more into the company and they make a Mass Effect game that will probably be similar?
It uses a large spiral bound book for the board and focuses on the actual skirmishes.
Reviews of it seem mixed. Some say it's a fun yet simple game, others say it's bland and repetitive.

that's the one I played. X-Com ufo defense and X-CO terror from the deep.

Amazing games for the time.

Let's see the minis they come up with...

They do a bunch of stuff including board games, of which the Mass Effect game is more that sort of thing.

They do an Elder Scrolls minis game but thier biggest thing in the minis space is their Fallout games (looking at their site, there's two now, not sure on the difference).

It won't be a board game, it's a wargame with miniatures - we'll be sharing more info soon , but if you look at our site, you'll see we make the Fallout Factions wargame, Fallout Wasteland Warfare wargame, Hardwar wargame and many other rulesets, with a wide range of miniatures supporting those and other games.

I quite enjoyed Fallout Wasteland Warfare when I played a demo of it. Need to get back to painting at some point but my hands are full with other projects at the moment

Although saying that, I'm really looking forward to seeing the models.

There were some from the original 1994 game on thingiverse a long time ago, but I do like the soldiers from the remake.

I am keen, XCOM is my favourite game series on PC, played 'em all. For me the appeal is the mystery and scope and escalation of the campaign more than the minute to minute flanking sectoids bit but I have enough love for the IP that I'll still inevitably get this. If anyone's interested in something indie I can recommend Majestic 13 - https://www.snarlingbadger.com/majestic13

Game wise could be a mantic/deadzone/halo/mars attacks style port. So the squares on the map and moving guys around them without measuring.

Deadzone is a great fit, in fact I already made an XCOM port in 2013 or so

That was before casual 3d printing tho, and I never got round to proxying it.

Very excited at the prospect of this as a trad game adaption of X-Com is a big gap in the market.

Is it going to have co-op? That’d be a huge bonus for me.

A bit out of the blue but very much in Modiphius' wheelhouse. Be interesting to see what the scope of the game is and whether they feel it justifies plastic kits for the core sets (something that they're really getting off the ground now with Fallout). Actually a bit surprised that it's being pitched as a miniature wargame as my initial instinct would be that a board-gamey, objective based hex-tile style setup would have been the obvious transition for X-Com. Certainly not an unpleasant surprise though.

Probably itching to get some extra use out of those Mass Effect models in a skirmish style game down the line as well. Hopefully they can juggle all the IP-licensed products they're racking up these days; Elder Scrolls already feels like it's fallen off a cliff. Thankfully both Fallout games are seemingly doing very well (and that Wasteland Warfare 2nd Edition is shaping up nicely).

You mean missing a 95% chance shot when your gun is literally clipping through a Grey's face?

A lot will depend on the system.

Good system - those are worth my time.

Bad system - not so much.

Regardless of how nifty the miniatures are.

My white whale, too. Ivan Sorenson (Five Parsecs/Five Leagues) mentioned a while back that he was working on some secret project for Modiphius, after the Paranoia game was announced. I'm hoping this is it, because he's always cited XCOM (both eras) as inspiration. He'd also nail the strategic campaign layer.

X-com came out in 1994 and for a lot of people, myself included, it's still the best game of all time. That's the one I played as a carefree kid (and also as a stressed out student, and as a depressed adult)

Preach, brother, preach. Some 30-odd years on, and the BGM sting in Terror from the Deep can still make me jump out of my chair.

What I can't wait to see is proper Sectoid-style gray alien minis. Scrawny child-sized ones. I'll buy anything Modiphius puts out in STL for sure, especially Sectoids and a Skyranger I.

I very much hope Wave 1 starts with XCOM1 - or even X-COM UFO Defense, though I suspect the more current version of the license will hold sway. XCOM2 is an amazing game that definitely refined and improved the videogame's system, mechanics, and campaign...but we need to start at the traditional XCOM start...a small combined military forces with science and manufacturing departments, carrying out secret ops to study and combat the growing alien menace.

Not holding my breath for original X-com... but it would be my preference. Modiphius did do both major eras of Star Trek tho, so maybe there's a chance.

It might creep in a bit, without being a focused release. Fallout Wasteland Warfare eventually got a few nods to the Fallout 1-2 era...mostly in the form of Frank Horrigan, but they're there.
