In my personal opinion using both, a mech list is superior because you can avoid alot of dakka from other armies by getting your units in melle very quickly either through trukks or bikes, but the disparity is not nearly as large as it once was in fifth due the boosts 30 man squad boyz received such as not losing causality to fearless and overwatch for shoota boyz

You can actually take 2 Warbosses w/PK etc. and 8 x 30 boyz squads with nobz and PKs @ 2000 points, but that would be silly. Not to mention, it'd take 3 days to complete one movement phase. The difficult thing, in my opinion, is if you want anything even slightly more interesting than 242 infantry models slogging up the board, is list building.

Orks have a lot of units which are only decent, even when they get to do exactly what they're supposed to, which they almost never do. But they have almost no units which are purely excellent, and none which can do more than one task reasonably well. The only think orks can't really do is shoot well. Money shouldn't be your basis for building an army. Armies are goals requiring dedication. They grow over time and take months to form. It's sortof a labor of love.

Don't worry about having a full, playable army right away. Rather, slowly accumulate an army that you'll enjoy playing. It'll be more worthwhile in the end.

For instance, I could have dropped 300 bucks my first month in a game, and played Mech Guard. But I wanted to play Air Cavalry Guard. Trust me, Orks can shoot. Now a single Ork wont hit squat, but his 20+ other buddies certainly will. We make up for it in volume of shots. Ive blown entire units off the table in a shooting phase with just shootas. So it can and does, get done.

^ This. I did the same thing with my last army, which was IG. I built a list I wanted to run, and then bought stuff that got me closer to that list, and nothing else. Didn't take long before I had the 2K list I wanted. I'm doing the same with my new Ork army. And having done this, I can add stuff to it so I can change the list up for different games, and still have a strong army.

When I started my blood angels army, I had no clear direction, and just bought what I thought was a good idea at the time, and the result is an army which I hardly ever play anymore. Why? Because I have tons of random stuff, none of which really works together. Can't say if my mate's Ork list with Wazzdakka and bikers is the best, but those bikers sure put out a lot of Twinlinked dakka. ;-)

And they're not too shabby at taking apart anything they charge either. Having them supported by Deffkoptas and Trukk boyz means they can get stuck in fast while the Warboss and his Nobz in the Battlewagon arrive a bit later to take out anything that was too hard. Don't try and take a lot of vehicles or anything, just maybe a transport for like your warboss and friends.

Carboard armour, cruddy Initiative scores and lousy BS scores. Middling strength when not charging. older Xeno codex (don't tend to be as broken-ass powerful as the more recent IOM ones (and Necrons..but same writer ), Randomness in some units can lose you the game sometimes (SAG, Lootas, Weirdboyz etc)

Ork strengths:

Decent in Close combat, huge units, Can make up for lousy BS with number of shots, good toughness, can take anyone elses vehicle model and run it with an Ork army as a looted wagon. Fun conversion/modelling opportunities, Randomness can sometimes win you the game (Lootas cranking max shots every turn, SAG fooming a whole unit off to the warp, Zogwort turning the enemy general into a squig...)

All in all, Orks are for people who want to play to have fun. Anything is possible.

I'm relatively new to the hobby (Around a year) and I've won the last two tournaments I've entered.

The keys?:

Research-Read every tactical article, every battle report, every army list critique, and every blog post that you can find relating to playing your army, or playing 40k

Dedication-I've played as often as I can, and constantly challenged myself by playing against the best players I could find

Diligence-Every game I've been focusing on what can I improve; what might not be doing its job as well as it can

As long as you put all you've got into it, you can win games. First of all, this doesn't matter, 5 threads in a month isn't spamming. When I first picked up 40k, I was on here every other day asking all the same questions flip-flopping all over the damn place. Picking a army is difficult, and some people really have a hard time choosing. So lets help the kid instead of ragging on him, he ain't breaking any rules, and if you don't want to help stay out of the thread.

Next, I am seeing some people stating Orks aren't that great. They suck at this, they suck at that, 'this army' does 'this' much better than Orks. Well on paper, Orks don't look as good as say Space Wolves in CC, or Eldar in shooting, or IG in mech lists. But the thing is, Noob, thats not what Orks are all about. Orks don't have to be good at any of these things for one thing, and one thing alone. Price Effectivity.

Yes. Orks are cheap, and the vast majority of their units are cheap too. A Unit of Space Wolf LongFangs (6 models) equipped with Rocket Launchers (A popular loadout! CHEESE!) costs 140 points. Thats some heavy firepower, and pretty accurate as well. However, for a 140 points, Orks can field 23 Shoota boys, each capable of popping off two shots per model, and still assault in the cc phase.

This is how Orks work in every aspect of the game. They rely on quantity over quality. I love my Orks, and I love playing SM armies. Every single time one of their Termies or Tact Marines die, they also die a little inside. On the other hand, when my opponent drops a demolisher pie-plate on one of my units of 30 boys, I shovel the causalities off the board laughing, because I know I have plenty more where they came from and he has only dented my waaagh. Also, Terminators don't seem so tough when you throw a bucket of dice at them.

As for Tourneys, they suck, and are usually frequented by WAAC jackasses. I avoid them after I beat a 'Champion' GK net list in the semi finals of a regional tourny and the kid started cursing me out and threw his models off the table (None of which were painted).

And finally, the most important part of picking your army isn't how powerful it is, or how many games you can expect to win, but how much you like the models, the fluff, and the playstyle of the army. Believe me, winning is the last thing you are thinking about when you are spending over 50 hours (At least!) painting your army.

I'd say go for Orks, because they are ridiculously badass, they have the best fluff, the best models, and they are a blast to play! They might not be the most reliable army in the world, and you can expect plenty of hilarious hijinks while playing them, but they do what they do better than anyone else.

There is nothing better than drowning your opponent in dice. Orks, although one of the simplest armies out there, have some of the widest variety of lists and tactics imaginable. I'd direct you better to this website http://www.the-waaagh.com/forums/

Its a great community of Ork lovers with plenty of Vets who will be willing to help you out, and they also have plenty of great Articles.

No, in fact orks can be quite competitive, what I'm saying is that their shooting and mech really can't hold up to any other armies shooting or mech and that they are best in like multiple blob squads. That is what I have run and won with, that is what I have been beaten by, and that is what I have seen win tournaments. Get some boyz to ride the trukks, or to pace along beside the BW. Trukks only hold 12, but foot mobs can be 30.

KFF extends 6'' from the hull of a vehicle if the Big Mek is in there. Shove him in there. Give him a unit of Lootas or Burnas to keep him company.

That will give you a small but workable ork force of somewhere between 750 and 1000 Pts, depending on how many orks boyz you have, how many lootas you went with (if any) and how you kitted out your BW.

Add other units as they appeal to you, and experiment. Get into fights, lose some and figure out why. Win some and do likewise.

Also a word from someone who KNOWS (on this issue). If you are going to paint your army (please please do!) paint them while they are small, THEN add another unit and paint it. I have been playing Orks since 40K was invented (actually a bit before that ) and i've only got about 1/10 of my orks done..

15 burnas is my preferance, with 2 of them being meks with rokkit launchers.
Battlewagon with def rolla, armour plates, red paint job, zzap gun and 4 big shootas.
Along with a big mek inside with KFF for the save.

Can repair 3 hull points a turn on a 4+

Or lootas in a battlewagon, giving them the armour they need, and still having 48" range, and if something drop pods or deep strikes in, deff rolla them or run away faster tha tthey can chase, while shooting them with the lootas.

If irc, they are S7 AP4 guns. Sounds like you have a lot to learn. I don't know what to tell you man,

Ap stands for armorpiercing: How well the weapon pierces armor (cancels armor saves)
WS stands for Weapon Skill: How well someone hits and defends against cc attacks.
BS stands for Ballistic Skill: How accurate someone is with ranged weapons.
S stands for Strength: How easy it is to wound a model.
T stands for toughness: How easy it is to shrug off wounds.
Beyond that I'd say buy the book.

My advice.

Buy a paper codex and a rulebook. You can't really do without either if you are going to play this game. Digital codexes are ok for reference, but paper is best, especially when an opponent wants to see your codex to understand one of your unit's rules. YMMV of course.


Read them THOROUGHLY, and then start thinking tactics.


Buy a small force to start off with, then build up.

Forget tournaments until you learn the rules. Nothing PO's a tournament opponent like someone having to ask what basic gaming terms mean all the time.

Play a few games, try a few things. Get some demo games in at the FLGS if you can.

Feel free to PM me or ask questions on Dakka if you want. We can provide you with considerable help for playing Orks. There's some damn fine Ork players on here.

That said, you'll not learn the game if you need to be provided with everything on a platter. We learn best by playing.

If you ask a question that is readily available in the rulebook or codex (like what certain units in your army's codex are or who Ghazgkull Thraka is ) expect most people to tell you to read your book or give you a page reference. Sure, it's not immediately helpful, but you really do need to read your codex and rulebook through a bunch of times to play this game properly and be fully aware of your units and what they can do.

Do you have a Games Workshop store in your area? The staff there would be more than happy to teach you the basics of the game. Once you get a grasp of it, reading the rulebook and the codex will feel much more fun and giving.

While some of the responses in this thread could have been a little more polite, I'm a little puzzled as to just what you are expecting from it. You're not going to learn to play the game over a forum thread like this... It's just too complicated. The rulebook is 400 pages, and about a third of that is the rules of the game. Asking random questions on the web is not going to get you any sort of complete view of how to play the game... and teaching you how to play the game because you don't have a rulebook is simply not what the forum is for. It would be an exercise in futility for both parties involved.

Trust me, Orks can shoot. Now a single Ork wont hit squat, but his 20+ other buddies certainly will. We make up for it in volume of shots. Ive blown entire units off the table in a shooting phase with just shootas. So it can and does, get done.
