When I play at my house, there is always beer or wine or scotch or something.

At tournaments sometimes my pals and I grab one next door in between rounds.

If I'm in the mood, I'll drink when I play at a buddy's place or at home.

Sometimes, yeah. Keep it moderate tho, Its not much fun if you pass out during the middle of a game and wake up with a Daemon Prince stuck in the middle of your back.

I have a beer most days when I come home, so a beer or two over the 2-4 hours a game takes isn't a big deal in my mind.

I have a 15 mile drive through Mad-Max-Style traffic to and from my FLGS and the vast majority of the people I game with are minors anyway, so I stick with near fatal doses of caffeine and sugar on gaming days.

Not allowed to drink at any of the gaming venues, next to no interest in doing so anyway.

I have a couple of beers during our friday night roleplaying session, usually. And if my mates come round for some board gaming or wargaming on the weekend I might have a couple too. Not really interested in gaming drunk though, and certainly wouldn't show up to the shop drunk.

I don't drink at all. I do know a couple of people who drink and game. One was even booted out of a tournament for being piss drunk and obnoxious.

Most of my games are played at home (mine or some friends),so their is almost always a few beers being consumed.

I pretty much always drink and play. This is my relax hobby and so is good beer... So its like a must. However the only time I don't drink and play is if I'm at the Local Game Store. Me and my friends have actually made a drinking game mission for 40k that is friggin awesome.

I drink, socially, while I game, when possible. Most of my group's friendly game nights take place at our houses, and beer is available. No one drinks to excess, we're all too old for that.

Of course, if gaming at a store, no drinking.

Tomorrow night, in fact, we'll be trying my first ever home-brew along with our gaming.

Beer is always good, although I do not recommend drinking too much. Moderately during play, plastered when celebration comes afterwards. Also the losers have to pay for drinks to the winner in a tour. Also, only drink at home, coming to an official tour drunk or with stuff to make you drunk is just rude.

I usually drink when gaming at a friend's house. Now that we mostly game at a local coffee shop, it's changed to coffee, except for our Dark Heresy games, where drinking is the only way I can herd 7 cats... I mean players.

I've never gotten pissed drunk while gaming but I do have a friend that tried playing WM drunk. It didn't end well.

Drinking and smoking the whole time... I'll be luck to finish the game. ;P

I never drink, so its a non-issue for me. However when playing at home, I have been known to mark objectives with different smoking devices...

Well, given that there is nobody around to play with right now, this is moot. Now that I'm 19 I CAN drink and game (easily at least) but without other players that becomes a mighty depressing picture.

I do however often drink and play co-op marathons of video games. ResE5, Bionic Commando Re-armed, Army of Two, GoW2, Resistance 1 and Mary Kate and Ashley Olson: Crush Course (I'm not kidding).

I'd rather be smoking the good stuff than be drinking any day.

Don't drink, never really understood the appeal of it.

I play at my house or at friend's houses, and we always have a few drinks. It's a balancing act though, because a lot of the 40K rules don't make a lot of sense so you need to be just drunk enough that they don't bother you, but the rules are also fiddly and obtuse, so you need to be sober enough to make sense of them.

The trick is to be just a little bit more drunk than you are when completing your tax return.

There is a reason I have a Khorne skull rune shaped bottle opener.

I don't partake in the devil drink anyway, so gaming and drinking is not an issue

My brother drinks and games sometimes, depends whether he feels like getting some beer or wine on the way over to my house.

Most of my gaming time consists of my being a game master, so I tend to refrain from drinking during that time.

When it's just "game night" and we're playing board games and such, then the rum-and-cokes start flowing*.


*: "flowing" usually means... two.

If I can do so legally I have no issues with a beer or other beverage with zymogenic components.

Usually though my gaming venue of choice is a dry store and I have to drive anyway. At weekend events where no driving is involved then let the alcohol flow.

I don't drink that often, but as long as it doesn't impair your ability to play the game coherently, remain civil and drive home safely I've no problem with it.

I find that a nice glass or two of Riesling, port or berry wine is the perfect complement to an evening of relaxing gaming.

I'm too young, but I personally don't have a problem with it.

I only play casually so yes alcohol almost every time. Otherwise I am just playing with toy soldiers...

I don't drink, so no. I most likely wouldn't drink during a game. I smoke cannabis though, and most definitively do that while playing. My mates likes to have a whiskey or five during games too. It's a social gathering, people!

I prefer to sit.

My main club plays in a sports supporters club (with poker machines and a bar and all that - but we're upstairs away from them all) so beer is usually to hand (for those of us who are old enough) - I don't drive, and I rarely drink enough in a sitting to get drunk.

With beer, losing doesn't matter.

I only drink while gaming if I'm at home or going to be staying at the location where I'll be gaming (i.e. 2-day tournaments).

Safely, if given the opportunity.

I don't drink when I'm gaming. I really only rarely drink anyway. I would not be put off by others drinking while gaming with me though, so long as they aren't getting obnoxious.

Moderation is the key I think. I have no problem with drinking while gaming although as I don't like beer much I would probably refrain. I have tried mixing whiskey and WoW to some success. On an interesting note last saturday I took part in a random partners 40k 2v2 tournament and the organizer furnished a keg for the participants. It was a good time and everyone was intelligent about it.

I don't drink a lot myself - my last drink was New Year's, and before that... maybe my birthday? - and I've never had a drink when playing 40K or any other type of game. Our group isn't made up of big drinkers, so it's never come up.

We do consume several mega-litres of Coke though.

And I wouldn't drink if there were kids playing.

Can't drink at my current venue due to policy (in fact as it is a UK business that does not possess a licence to sell/consume alcohol both I and the store would be breaking the law).

But I'll happliy drink while gaming at home

I honestly do not see the point of drinking whilst gaming, it isnt like being drunk whilst playing with little toy soldiers is going to be any more fun =/

Nah but seriously, having a few drinks with your friends and a game is great fun and a way of relaxing for me.

Well, my group is generally older, so when we play at home, we'll usually have some drinks. We're all fine with it and we tend to stop before it endangers our little plastic army men.

At tourneys and the like though, I steer clear of booze. First off, liquor licenses up here are fairly picky and the shop can wind up in a bit of trouble if we're drinking. Secondly, it's a respect for our host angle. There tends to be minors around and even when there aren't minors at the actual tournament, the store still has a business to run. Alcohol consumption is limited to after the game for that reason.

One thing I'm seeing here that I'll echo is that when my role playing group gets together (which is rarely now), there tends to be more drinking involved. My take on it is that it's partially the 'let your imagination flow' angle and partly the comparative lack of kinesthetic activity in an RPG versus a miniatures game.

Im confined to a GW store, so it would be frowned upon.

and as for playing whilst 40k-ing, yes please. It is more relaxing, and allows me to focus...

in my gaming circle its almost compulsory to drink while gaming (the gaming club meets in a bar.) the most extreme example being that when a few of us went to a near by tournament, got there and found the bar closed we went to the nearest off licence to buy a crate of beer for the duration

Yep, in its most extreme incarnation we do a shot every time you give up a kill point. It actually makes Orks behave more believably.

I don't drink and I generally don't let anyone else drink while gaming. There are times thngs can get heated, and adding alcohol to that mix is never a good plan.

Most people are nearly as good at anything, let alone needing to think about a game, while drinking.

I have not Drank since I was 19 and I am 22 now..It just is expensive and harmful in the long run!

Take a shot for every kill point your opponent gets.... Would make for some interesting results.

Haven't really gotten to the point where I might get a drink while playing (just a few games under my belt) but if our group is playing at someone's home then why not, we're all adults. Would never go to my FLGS even if I'd just had a few, I think the minors there don't need to see tipsy grown-ups.

I do NOT drink while gaming, I prefer to enjoy it sober. I don't especially mind drinking while gaming, I just don't do it often. On the other hand, I don't mind if someone drinks while playing me, so long as they don't hurl on my minis, and they don't mistake me for their ex and start trying throw metal minis at me.

I usually don't but doesn't mean I wouldn't and don't really care if someone else is having a drink so long as they aren't really getting drunk. Mainly because I don't want someone to be getting tipsy if they are right next to the models I have invested countless dollars and hours.

Personally, I like it when everyone is SOBER while playing! I've found that any kind of drink (or what have you ) only hinders the game and only invites stupidity to the table, regardless of what game your playing!

I can occasionnally have a beer while playing, but nothing more than this...

A few beers over a game with my 19+ age friends sounds like a good night to me.

Can't due to age, but I wouldnt if I could. We get a lot of kids through our store on gaming days. Even pardoning that I'd hate to see how terrible I manage my army while tipsy.

If we are gamingat someone's house there is always alcohol available but rarely if ever do any of us get so sloppy we cannot play. Obviously at FLGS stores this is out totally.

Having a few drinks while playing I like to do....being drunk and playing rarely ever unless at friends house and we've been drinking and we get the bright idea to play a game at 1 A.M. which we never finish wake up try and play and wonder if the beer can was always blocking LOS.

My 'local' FLGS's annual grand tournament (I've just moved out of the area in question, but I'll be returning for the annual tournament every year) holds the event at a local RSL or bowling club, which has an open bar.
I'll usually put down at least a few on the first day of the event, since that night is going to be all-drinking anyway. Buy your opponents a drink, loosen up, it's all good.


I wouldn't drink in a gaming store, nor attend one drunk, unless it was generally being done.

I'm surprised Dashofpepper hasn't posted in here yet. He is notorious, well atleast in my book, for boasting about drinking whilst playing.

It depends on where I'm playing and with whom I'm playing. I mostly play down at my local GW store, and obviously there's no drinking going on there -- plus I have to drive home after the game.

But when my friends get together for our monthly game night, the alcohol tends to flow pretty freely, and I like a nice cocktail with my game.

I drink when I game. I don't think I would have much fun if not. I'd be too uptight and anal about things and probably annoy the hell out of people.

Just a beer or two so I don't get all obnoxious or anything. But gaming is supposed to be a relaxing and fun thing to do. When I am relaxing and having fun, I like to have a beer.

Even store games. I just keep it low key, like when I go out for a cigarette between turns or whatever I'll take a couple gulps of brewski.

@LunaHound's question. It doesn't affect them one bit except the occasional stranger in a store who might smell beer on me and have to go tattletale to the redshirt because he is opposed to alcohol. That only ever happened once, and the redshirt didn't care, just as long as it wasn't actually in the store and I was obviously not intoxicated or causing any problems. So yeah some anal types get offended I guess but I only ever encountered it once.

I possibly have a beer, at least since it has been so hot out lately. I always smoke the refeer though. BC bud ftw.

One time I was at my buddies and they were playing a game one guy drank to much and the other guy cheated.

For some, like me, having a beer or two before a game helps them relax and have a more enjoyable experience. The key is to know when to slow down or stop so you don't get sloppy.

When playing at a house a couple of beers over the course is always good, after all its supposed to be a beer and pretzels game. But i don't see the point of trying to play warhammer drunk trying to send a text when it hits like 2am out clubbing is hard enough, let alone trying to resolve the compulsory movement phase for an orc and goblins army with fanatics.

Although Yu-gi-oh after 3/4 of a bottle of jack is a lot more fun than before the 3/4 of a bottle of jack

In the words of the late great W C Fields "I always keep a supply of stimulant handy in case I see a snake, which I also always keep handy". Re gaming I find it rather pleasant to round off the edges a little with a few beers, just got to stay on top of those pesky little dice though!!!

I don't think I've ever played a game without at least a beer in my hand. Well, except for the three games I played at my FLGS. But I don't count those.

I know plenty of people who are forgetful, belligerent, and/or clumsy when they are sober. I know plenty of people who are more annoying with their holier than thou attitude towards having a beer than the guy having the beer too. hint hint.

I drink very little to begin with, couple of cans and maybe a glass of wine a week, and I'm always driving when gaming so no drink for me.

I wouldn't mind if someone just had a can or two but I'm not going to game with someone that's getting themselves drunk. I live on a street with six pubs within 200 meters of each other so get enough of drunks there o na weekend, I don't want to deal with such morons while gaming too.

Warhammer is easily adapted into a drinking game... every time you get a kill point, your opponent takes a shot... It's fun, especially apocalypse games...

i openly refer to this as chemical warfare. I enjoy having a drink once in a while. especially if i am on my way to win a tourni. if im up by second round it helps me keep my cool and not make stupid moves. so does avoiding caffeine. That stuff makes me angry. Risk games are no holds barred though. if your foe is winning, pass him the bottle.

They can shoot up heroin while smoking crystal meth for all I care as long as they can handle themselves and behave. What a person drink/smokes is there business not mine.

Can't see any issue with drinking alcohol while gaming. It's just like any other beverage except it has alcohol. This only becomes an issue if you drink to excess, and that's usually inappropriate unless you're at a party and everyone involved is comfortable with it. Getting drunk in the middle of the afternoon while playing wargames... well you might have 'a problem' if that is becoming a serious issue.

As for 'drinking in front of minors', god americans are so up tight about their alcohol. Kids have to learn to drink some time. Better off in a responsible setting at home than experimenting for themselves. My first occasional light beers were probably over games of Space Hulk and Rogue Trooper and I would have been a good bit underage if you're picky about that sort of thing.

I am firmly of the opinion that its a great idea for other people to drink during games that require a lot of thought. I don't do it myself, but I'll take any edge I can get.

Nothing wrong with it as long as everyone knows their limits. I love getting hammered with the guys and having a game of Fantasy (Whilst cursing the dice gods in 3 different languages out loud). As long as people don't have to drive home or have alternate transportation home or are crashing at the location while gaming then live it up and have another pint on me! P.S. D&D whilst DM'ing tipsy = FUNTIMES lol

However one needs to make sure that everyone is comfortable with people drinking or you may find people leaving the group which is never good ( Unless you want them to )

I'm a Type 1 Diabetic, and several years under aged, so i can't. But i'd say mediation is the best bet.

Just started gaming. I have to drive a few miles so I cant drink at the place I play but I would if I could! Some of the games i play are nail biters.

Depends on where I play. When I go over to one friends house, I'll have a few beers. The other friend isn't really much of a drinker, so there I don't. I can take it or leave it.

That being said, my opponent can be doing shots of liquid plumber for all I care, so long as I can get a game.

DUIs are no freakin' joke.

I'm generally against it. Some people, lets say, can go a little over board, this not only effects the way they play but also the way they communicate. This can be frustrating if what your after is a fun,challenging game against a competent opponent.

This is from first hand experience some dakkites may know about.

i don't drink alot but my TO has special events that are invite only where we game + drink at the FLGS =] outside that i have 2 bottles of Wine and a bottle of Vodka in the cupboard.

On the rarity that I'm out gaming, then no. But I mostly game at home and have at least a pint or two of Guiness, or barring that another good stout.

For some reason gaming and drinking don't mix with me. I guess while playing 40k I am supposed to be fighting out some epic battle and having a beer in hand kinda takes away from that atmosphere a little bit. That being said, I'm not adverse to having a few beers or perhaps a couple shots every now and again.

I like having a post match pint, unfortunately this is frowned on at tournaments. Having too much strong coffee and having the "Caffeine sweats" before hand makes you look like you want to win at all costs (when really you are just hyped or in dire need of the toilet).

Could be worse, could be "all jacked up, on mountain dew, and come at your opponent like a spider monkey".

It does make it more fun to be inebriated while playing. Like I said in a previous post; it is a social gathering. Why drink and smoke cigars while playing poker? Because it's a social event. Why drink beer and shots while throwing darts? I guess you can guess the answer by now. If you ask 'why drink while gaming?', why not ask 'why drink?'

I don't drink, so when I play a game of 40k I'm in it for the game. I get real irritated if my opponents are drinking because then they don't focus on the game and at best things take twice as long as they should. Some have gotten so sauced that they totally lose track of the game and I've had to pack up my minis and walk out.

I have no opposition to people drinking, however it should not be the main event. A beer or two, some whiskey and cigars etc (for 'classy warhams' as my friends and I refer to it) is totally fine, but the warhammer should not be placed second to the alcohol or other events that evening. Of course, if at the local GW then it's forbidden to have alcohol in the store (or even lidless drinks for that matter), so it's completely out of the question.

I'd drink at home, but since I have to drive to places to game I don't touch it. It would be fun to have a drinking game for 40K like for every unit destroyed you got to take a drink, or something like that.

At a flgs I never have, however at a friends house while gaming ( REALLY funny with D&D ) we sometimes do, however I never have nor will I if children are present.

Only in friendly games and only if other people are drinking (don't want to be THAT guy).

Don't drink much when I play, but sometimes I do believe that it would make the die rolls seem better than they are.

I think having a beer or two with your friends while gaming is all well and good. I wouldnt be getting hammered if i was gaming.

Health issues prevent me from drinking. Otherwise I did and it was fun! Unless its tequila, then people cheat.

When ever i game it tends to be in the morning and unless im hungover then i don't drink in the morning

Drink your beers after. I personally have no problem with drinking. I have a nice healthy relationship with Guinness and Jameson, but they don't game, so we hang out elsewhere. But people get drunk, forget rules, knock stuff over. I don't care about any tactical advantage I gain, it feels hollow and pointless to win against a drunken buffoon. The house rule is do as thou wilt, but anyone getting trashed is table banned for the night.

I'm to young to drink alcohol -legally- but even if I weren't I would really only drink Chocolate Milk, -mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Chocolate Milk, It delicious! - and root beer, but not together.

Gotta say, though.

Warmachine is so much more fun with beer involved.
It's so much easier to ignore the utter douchebags who play it in my area with beer.

me and my frined used to game while drinking, however, the morning when we woke up with mostly broken armies covered in kebab and pizza and teddy bears bieng raped by CSM while the dark eldar were sat feeling each other made us think gaming while drinking was a bad idea.

we moved gaming night so it didnt clash with drinnking night.

Everything goes at my table, but it's not a good game if anyone is too wasted. There are too many rules and stuff to keep track of, anything other than a light buzz and you're bound to lose by forgetting to play/use something..

This poll is so old that people who said they were too young when it started are likely old enough to drink by now.

If i'm playing at home I might have a few beers. I generally avoid drinking while gaming though. It can depend on the game too. When playing something more social/group oriented then maybe. But when playing something more crunchy like classic Battletech, no way. It would have to be a game that is not as demanding of my attention span.

Maybe a couple of beers after a game if I haven't driven and the pub is still open.
