Job Vacancy - The chance you've been waiting for! @ 2010/02/09 23:06:45

Post by: Flashman

Apologies, if this has been posted before. But the section in bold made me chuckle...

Assistant Games Developer

Are you an enthusiastic, passionate and knowledgeable hobbyist? Do you have an encyclopaedic knowledge of our background, games systems and rules?

Can you write exciting, evocative background that adds depth and breadth to the worlds of Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000? Can you translate your passion and enthusiasm into clear, consistent rules that encourage people to have fun with their Citadel miniatures? Games Workshop is looking for a hard-working, writer who can work within our established style and wants to learn the art of being a great Games Workshop Games Developer.

The successful candidate will have a high standard of written English ('A' level standard or equivalent) and ideally be educated to degree level. Excellent communication and team working skills are essential. Fully conversant with Microsoft office.

Closing Date: Friday 12th February 2010

If you would like more information then call Catherine Hamilton, HR Advisor, on 0115 900 4060.

Should you wish to apply for this role please email your C.V. and covering letter explaining why you would like to be considered for this role to: hr.recruitment@games-workshop.co.uk quoting ref number 54

So come on then all you would be games developers, who's going to man up and introduce clear and consistent rules into GW's games? I would, but kind of settled in my transport planning career at the moment...

I like the way it infers that the assistants are the ones who are responsible for clarity and consistency. Explains a lot...

Either that or they've just realised they are in urgent need of somebody who can write properly.

Why is that a requirement? Half the designers now how problems translating their enthusiasm into clear consistent rules judging by YMTC forum questions.

They should recruit a trained sub-editor or technical writer.

So how much does an "assistant" games developer make anyway? For that matter how much do "lead" developers make?

If I had to guess I would guess the assistant makes between $30 and $40K a year. The lead makes $60K? Then throw in extra for for fiction novel writing.

Am I close?

I'd take a guess at around £25-27k for senior games devs, JJ on about £40k, RP and JG on about £50k. Juniors on about £20k.

Kind of tragic that they need English to at least advanced. I got double A at gcse and hence can string a sentence or two together, wouldn't have ever dreamed of becoming further qualified in this area though.

Think of all the talent that could be overlooked because they don't have written proof that they can distinguish a clause from a conjugate. I'd bet my smaller testicle that Graham McNiel can't (or maybe he can - i doubt he got the job based on writing talent).

Damn! I'm in the market for a creative writing job at any level anywhere in the U.K. right now. I've got a 1st class degree in English Literature and I've got previously published material on my CV. I'd love to apply for this but I'm due to leave my present job at the end of June and if I break contract and quit before that I won't get my plane ticket out of the country.

I can only hope the position isn't filled or that they try hiring again closer to June.

They only put this out for legal reasons - the vacancy will already be filled internally or through someone who knows someone, but they have to advertise.

Games Developers don't really write rules. They write background and story.

Apply now anyway.

Just don't tell them you have four months to go on your contract. Once they have decided they really want you and make you an offer, they can either buy out your contract or wait until you are free.

Most big companies take a few months to recruit a new person.

Job Vacancy - The chance you've been waiting for! @ 2010/02/10 13:17:26

There's no law that requires companies to advertise externally.

Many companies try to fill vacancies by internal promotion. Naturally, if successful it leads to a vacancy lower down the ladder, which needs to be advertised.

Once upon a time I would have loved a GW studio job.

But I'm not sure I could work with the people who sculpt the razorgor, or write rules like those for Dark Angels or WHFB daemons because this button-down, Oxford-cloth psycho might just snap, and then stalk from office to office with an Armalite AR-10 carbine gas-powered semi-automatic weapon, pumping round after round into colleagues and co-workers.

Also looks like you no longer have to be best friends with a head designer to get a job in the studio.

They should harvest Phil Kelly's geneseed and clone him. An entire chapter of creative game designers....

On a serious note, someone guesstimated it at 30k/year? I thought the living costs there were rather prohibitive, 30k/year doesn't seem like much.

30k a year is higher then the average working class wage I belive, even more so since it's not London and living costs are much cheaper for the rest of the country.
I get about 22 a year and am maintaing a two bed flat to myself just outside london so 30k would get significantly more then a van down by the river.

Of course that depends on whether you meant it as dollars or pounds, I'm thinking in the latter of course.

Not even for government jobs really. In our department (I work for a Local Authority btw) a couple of years ago, there were about 5 vacancies which were all filled by internal staff members. The resulting gaps were filled by people already working as temps in the department who applied and got those jobs. I find this, ironic.

how? that comma was correctly used. "the poor,abused..." is a list (which calls for a comma)

Indeed. And, not meaning to derail the thread, this is what I was getting at.

"hard-working, writer..." does not need the comma, but "poor, abused..." does.

And excuse my dodgy forum grammar...

Average salary in the UK is something around £26K per year, which is about $39,000.

However, taxes are higher here so you could expect to lose 20-25% giving you a take-home pay of about £20,000. (On the plus side, you get free health, etc.)

The big problem in the UK, especially the south-east, is housing costs.

Huh. I qualify and I live close enough to Nottingham that I could do it. I might as well take a shot. If nothing else, the staff discount will help when my wife sees the card statements for the month and chooses to beat me for it...

How difficult is it to get hired for a UK job if you are not an EU citizen? All EU applicants have to be refused first (or the job qualifications only suit you), correct?

Sweet. You mean I'd have targets for my own collection?

Err wait....I'd have to go through lots of red tape and paperwork to prove I needed more than a single gun. Feth that.

While it'd be a fun job I'm not willing to relocate to a country I can be shot at and not do anything about. That and it'd take money to relocate 1/2 way across the globe.

Ha!

Good one!

Though really, at this point, how well has having a command of "England's English" really worked out for the rest of us?

And also burglary capital of the UK too. Your house might be cheaper, but don't buy any expensive plasma screens.

He he, yes the place has been synonymous with crime for almost a thousand years.

@ Kilkrazy: You do so at your own peril. Although I could never accept the notion of Birmingham being 'the north'.

So come on then all you would be games developers, who's going to man up and introduce clear and consistent rules into GW's games? I would, but kind of settled in my transport planning career at the moment...

I don't think you could pay me for the amount of grief that this company puts it's employees through. Especially writers.

They treat thier writers like outright dog crap.

Ask some of the countless ex "Employees" of this company that they basicly get on board with a powderpuff, and then commence to treat like garbage while they dictate the party line.

Seriously, they need to just Put the book through a technical company that has nothing to do with the company at all. This company has too many issues with its so called "Writers" falling in love with the army and pulling crap out of thier fourth point of contact and shoving us all the preverbial "Be All End All" armies of Codex Creep fame.

I really didn't want to go there, but Chaos is only just the tip of the iceburg.

In my opinions, they just need to outsource the rulebooks and codexs to a company that specializes in this type of writing, and reference types of books. They have shown outright favoritism in the codex's, the background material, and lack of respect for the product in general.

I mean honestly, they know well and good that people in the company are too wrapped up in the armies to write an effective, balenced product that works for the whole game and doesn't leave loopholes, bodging, and stupid courtroom antics to play a 30 minute game of a miniatures game.

Seriously? They just need to pass the writing over to FF, like we've been saying since they started working together.

Either that or give Black Library an enima and get some specificly differet types of writers.

Get a team together to continue keeping the specialist games relevent, a couple of writers that write for the white dawrf, a couple for the novels. Heck, you could even give the writing to FF and outsource fluff books, or Get a technical writing section together for specific projects such as the model directions, codex's, rules, updates to rules, etc.etc.

The only question in this matter that seems relevant is whether we can persuade the person who gets this job to be willing to share inside information and rumours...

If it's a Dakka-poster Im sure he/she is aware of the moral obligation to share with the community ;-)

If I had to guess I would guess the assistant makes between $30 and $40K a year. The lead makes $60K? Then throw in extra for for fiction novel writing.

Am I close?

GG

I'd take a guess at around £25-27k for senior games devs, JJ on about £40k, RP and JG on about £50k. Juniors on about £20k.

So lets see:

Minimum wage ($7 USD) at around 40 hours a week earns approx 14,560 dollars (USD)

what you are stating ($20K GBP) is equal to 30K USD

Thats an ok pay raise, but does it seem a little low for someone who is actually DESIGNING the PRODUCT?
