The old one had a tendency to bend and bow the blade, causing an annoying crooked-one-side cut, and the base is particle board..who's bright idea was it to put particle board under a sharp blade behind a big hairy dude's arm?

might even show my dad and see if I can coerce him into doing some hobby work again

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/01/28 22:27:16

Well, those were 1mm rod..the smallest I use generally,
http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/Evergreen-Scale-Models-213-Round-Rod-100-5-p/evg-213.htm
tape short pieces together and cut 4-6 rivets at a time. Then sizes generally go up by .5mm at a time 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5, etc. Hex rod is only good at 2mm and up IMHO, any smaller and you can't see the edges very well.
http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/Plastruct-90875-080-20mm-Styrene-Hex-Rod-10-p/pls-90875.htm
Then..well, you can rivet-cut any shape, half-rounds, square rods, L-shaped, U-channel, etc. etc. The tool says it handles material up to 1/4" thick. 1/8" is max I'll ever use it for.
Evergreen is always a better value, but Plastruct has more shapes, the plastic/quality is exactly the same.

Thanks, Not really, but I did spend a year drafting for Verizon, designing their FiOS network at the neighborhood level..it was the most boring job of my life. Mostly I'm just hobby-motivated and self-taught. I don't care for the math, so I just cheat with a compass-cutter

Look!..I even found you a link! The only effort required is clicking!
Although this seems very expensive for 10..in the US, a box of 100 is about the same price as that ($7.00)
Try looking at hardware or DYI stores for this kind of paint scraper

you should be able to get them nearby those if nothing else.
edit: here..these aren't carbon steel, but you really don't need carbon steel

Honestly that is something I would not have thought of and deserves a on my part. I'll keep that in mind for when I start my Necromunda project again. I actually have a few of them (kids in high school) so I'm going to put one in my Necromunda material box and when I open it back up months from now I'll say "heeeeey, I remember that!" and get to work.

I'm expecting you'll have Bag End done in a month.

Haha! Once the Parlour is done, I'm going to take a distraction break and work on a 1:6 Cylon Centurion Model kit for an IPMS-USA review. Bag End will be a very long-term project I'll have to clean the gaming table off to build the hill once all the rooms are done, not to mention figuring out where to store the damn thing once it's done.

The COmpass-cutter is a lot like the Cricut- it'll make a nice score on plasticard, but it doesn't cut all the way through- still needs some good old-fashioned knife work.

Nope..Moebius kits are top shelf. In the latest issue of Sci Fi and Fantasy Modeler has two write ups/builds, and they say the gaps are all where the armor plates are supposed to meet up. Of coursr, they were using pre-production kits for the articles so We'll see. Every Moebius kit I've built so far has been a complete joy.

I'm about to be in the same situation once I start completing the other terrain projects I have going on. They are all on bases and I can't stack them anymore, and they have to share the same space as all the other stuff I've already created.

Looks like I'm finally going to have to kick everyone out of the house so I can use the bedrooms for storage.

I need to live in a cave on the side of a mountain and just model until I die.

Ok, no more of that from me. Back on topic... what was the paint you used for the floor? I know the card you used, quite familiar with it actually . But the design you achieved really looks like individually laid tiles like IRL masonry. Wouldn't mind borrowing that technique if you are willing to share.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/01/30 20:03:59

Post by: dsteingass

It's ONLY Vallejo Game color "terracotta" paint- then I just made a wash of white Gouache and slathered it all over. Gouache doesn't have a binder- so it's a lot like making a wash from weathering powders. Once the water evaporates, you need to seal it with clear otherwise any new water applied will just liquify it again. I cheated a bit and gave the floor a coat of future, then when that was dry, I dampened a cheap 1" brush with water and basically drybrush/scrubbed the floor like you would with a mop, which cut through the thin future coat and helped to remove any white gouache from the surface of the tiles, leaving it to run back into the mortar joints. Modelers are always afraid of using clear gloss for some reason, but gloss coat is your friend, it's a tool, it helps decal film dissapear, and it helps washes flow into cracks and crevasses. Like ANY wash, it's best to do it in several light coats than one thick coat. You can keep working it with nothing more than water and a paper towel until you get it the way you want. Then a final coat of future will seal it so water won't liquify it any more. If you scrub off too much, it's super-easy to just add a little more. Or, you can just run it under the tap and remove it all (if you haven't sealed it with future or other gloss)

So the process isn't too unlike doing REAL grout or patio blocks where you sweep fine sand into the space between bricks..except you're using white gouache instead of sand or grout.

I only paid something like $10 for this whole set- I bet the other colors would be useful eh?

And I learned this technique from a model railroad article..so ALWAYS keep your mind open to non-wargaming sources of Hobby Lore!

The skin-jobs just got all the good lines in the rebooted BSG.

According to my rough estimate sketch here

I will, I brought the little Desk and secretary kit to work today and started cleaning and building parts of it. Proof that Forge World is just full of lazy-ass people..this thing has the finest, most detailed, most thinly-cast resin parts EVER, and not a single one is bent or warped. Those little shelves are .5mm thick, and they are flawless. Forge World can't seem to cast a wing flap 4X that thickness without it being full of SUCK.

A whole set of India Inks, airbrush lube, Patriot 105 needle/nozzles, cleaner...

Baiyuan got some of these Schmincke airbrush colors, so I had to try them. These are some fancy metallics that are supposed to do fancy things!
Aero Metallic — The Aero Metallic shades stand out due to their special brilliance and shininess. They produce unique color effects when combined with bright and effect colors.

Aero Shine — These colors produce a mother-of-pearl effect that shimmers discreetly on bright surfaces but gives off a metallic shine on dark backgrounds and when combined with transparent shades. Depending on the angle, there is a gradual color change from the color of the background to the actual Aero Shine shades.

I have no idea HOW to do this, but it sounds really cool!

But I got free shipping on this order That's a Win-WIn- unlike my employer, who thinks WIn-WIn is when the company and the salesman make out like fat rats while paying us peanuts for making it all happen.

Yeah, the idea was to use them on the Cylon!
@Vik- they are made in Germany..you tell me!?!
I think it's the last name of the guy who started the company though.

Our postman is weird. He frequently stops his truck on the adjoining street and takes a break, then drives down our street, and stops his truck right in front of our house and takes another break. And just sits there for the longest time. He's kind of weird. He always takes off if we go out to get the mail while he's there, so i know it isn't something he should be doing.

Here I used my usual wood paints, but used my new Bombay Brown India Ink first in an overall wash, then streaked with a fine detail brush in an attempt at an Oak woodgrain.

Unfortunately the back of the secretary looks best IMHO.
Click and zoom, you tell me if you agree or not??
I'm now going to spray it all with yellow glaze, to lighten it up overall.

Thanks Nerd!
Yeah, Vallejo German GrunBraun primer, then Vallejo Air Wood (wood is a perfect highlight shade of the grunbraun), then Brown india ink wash, then wherever there was a dark puddle of ink I streaked around it with the brush to suggest knotty parts and rings of the Oak, then just random streaks everywhere else. I let the overall ink wash dry completely overnight before addign the streaking this morning (DAY OFF WORK- GO ME!!)

Also, this is all resin- this is the BEST resin kit I have ever built, really amazing craftsmanship and perfect quality freakishly thin casting!
And these India inks give you the lustre and richness of oil paints, without having to use flammable thinner and seperate brushes. Strangely, it seems to look flat when wet, but shiny when dry. I haven't used any future or gloss coat yet.

Wood effect looks really good.

One thing I can see is that the ink or paint seems to be a bit thick at the edges of some of the pieces. But that may just be the angle of the picture or the lighting catching it and may not look so obvious irl and may not show when built. The effect works though, just those bits may need a little attention.

Yep, it dried that way, but those are shelf boards and will be mostly hidden in shadow. I took more care on the wider shelves at bottom, because they will be more visible. The grain is always more pronounced on the edges anyways..I can justify it

Yeah it looks like you did, the middles of the shelves etc all look good. I'll keep it in mind when I find myself doing some wood.

i can see why you wanted tolighten up the furniture a bit for overall ambience reasons... but i liked it darker way better... as a study for future slef built stuff this is a total success! the wood grain is awesome! i had a look at the gallery and zoomed in on them... and it is really fooling me... at first as you stated it was a resin kit i thought it had a 3D effect to support that woodgrain effect... but none such... all flat... so double the awe for that outcome!

The Mobster will be the figure in the diorama that the furniture will also be a part of.

I am now painting a Zinge Revolver for placement in the open drawer of the desk.
Zinge's Ork-sized revolvers are pretty close to 1/35 scale

...We'll switch gears to some 1920's gangster stuff for a diversion I need a cool car now!

Yaya..Touchups I know...My eyes have been working on this enough for tonight!
The kit has a desk lamp, and old-fashioned telephone too, I'l need to make a 1/35 ashtray!

It was late, real late, the steam from the vents in the street outside were lit up like christmas as the neon signs for the mens clubs down the strip did their work, I was frustrated, my head wreathed in the delicious acrid smoke from numerous cigerettes i'd been chainsmoking since noon trying to get my head around my latest case,

Creaking ominously my swivels chair rocked back as i set my size 11 shoes on my old walnut desk and blew smoke towards the ceiling, my desk was old, its surface scratched and worn, well used I like to say to those who ask why i don't get new one, and plus it's the only desk I know that's got a big enough drawer to hide my trusty Zinge 88 revolver, that thing could stop a man after going through a wall, not that i've had to use it much, I rely more on my brain than my gun to solve a crime, and there's been plenty of those lately.

My mind was racing so i shut my eyes to attempt to focus, it was turning like a lover at a barn dance but I had work to do! who did it and why? what was the angle and who did it profit? this was a curly one.... and it was about to get curlier!

I was about to hit the streets to clear my head when a knock on my door rattled the thin glass in the frame with a chattering tap..... and then 'she' walked in! i'd never seen a woman like her before, drop dead gorgeous with legs that went all the way up until they got cheeky! this dame was somethin' special and i knew whatever she wanted i'd help her! even though the hairs on the back of my neck were telling me she was trouble, straight up to me she came and eased those legs down to sit on the edge of my desk, her skirt rising just enough for my eyes to want to keep glancing at her thighs, she let her blood red finger nails slowly caress the scratches in it's top before she spoke to me, " my, i've never seen one that BIG before" she purred, keeping eye contact with her I replied " it's just the way my pants fit" she laughed lightly "no, you silly detective, i'm talking about your Zinge 88 in the drawer" how could I have been so distracted? my drawer wide open and my usually sharp mind distracted painfully by my pants! she was going to be trouble with a capital 'T'.

It was like playing a movie, the faces, expressions, and mouth movements in the cutscenes were amazing, and the story was excellent too, like a creative kitbash of Goodfellas, Casino, Godfather, A Bronx Tale elements along with some great cars, also generic mixes of real period American cars, and a massive open world, even if the play was linear.

It really isn't sandbox though, there's only one quest at a time, and the story makes you want to hurry to it. You do a lot of car stealing and driving.

It makes me itch for Fallout-style play.

Dave, as a suggestion to scratch your 20's itch, with a sandbox style, might I suggest L.A Noire?
I mean, you play as a cop instead of a mobster, but much of what you do ends up being the same

Post by: Dr H

I would say that a very fine pen might be your friend, but I don't know if they will even go that thin.

If you're doing the stripes in a fairly similar colour to the suit then you may get away with only giving the impression of pin stripes by doing them on well lit places and saying that they dissapear in the shadows, then you don't need to do stripes all over the suit. That would save some effort.

I've not had any other bright ideas yet to achieve the pin-stripe look...

Edit: oo no, tell a lie. just had one. How about a very sharp pencil? Should give you very fine lines and you can possibly rub them off if a line goes wonky.

that mobster looks very smart! i like him... and the solid colored suit works for me... pinstripes are good and all but a one colored suit sure has it´s merrits too

the metal work on the cylon looks very cool... yes...good image^^... a cool and murderous ba....rd...... how you want to weather that one is a mystery... i never saw a ruined looking pile of screws back in the day when starbuck still was a guy...but that´s just me

on a side note... yesterday we celebrated our sons felix seventh birthday... in fact it is actually today...but we had to go to work...so little time in terms of celebrating that glorious day... so we instead preponed the event to sunday and not only did he get his presents early...(or better lots ) but also we went to legoland here in berlin... and boy...did we get lucky!!!! they had a special super feature star wars thing going on! man have been we all amazed! have you ever seen literally thousands of stormtroopers and droids and clone troopers side by side marching in for the battle? it was a cool sight for sore eyes if i ever saw something...

Wow, super impressive Cylon paintwork - although the pose is a little camp possibly... but none the the less an impressive kit... Love the gangster, really good pose - did you ever consider painting him in shades of grey (no, not the book...) to give him that black and white movie feel?

Vik, that sounds like the Star Wars weekends in Disney World's Hollywood Studios - Always wanted to go but never made it yet - mostly because they are in May and my kids are still in school... Closest I got was Celebration Europe - loads of the 501st in attendance, plus life size Jabba, Snowspeeder and X-Wing (and more besides) A joyous day out!

Post by: dsteingass

The Pose is the kit's biggest downfall, I agree. It could be changed, but it would take some surgery. Some might say the gaps where the armor plates meet is bad, but there would be no other way to make the kit, and I wouldn't want to try and fill them after painting. You have to figure that the "real" thing would need those plates to be replaceable parts, so the gaps are normal.
After two days of contemplation, I have decided NOT to weather the Cylon after all. I think I like the toaster just the way he is. The uber-reflective surface lets light play with shadows and highlights without much need for painted/inked shadows, and I think inks/washes would ruin the pretty surface too.

No, his left arm gun is out and readying to fire, the right arm gun is retracted, the hands are doing what they are supposed to, He is supposed to be 7 feet tall, so he would be aiming downward to hit a smaller human. Besides, he isn't really supposed to move like a human, he is a toaster after all
