New Project

I decided it was time to paint something different. For a while I was considering Chaos - but then the Dark Angels made a timely comeback. The Dark Angels was my favorite army back in 2nd edition. It fell upon me to play the space marines that came with the box 20 years ago. First they got painted as a Blood Angels army, but at some point I fell in love with the robes and characters of the DA.

This will not be a huge army. I picked the DA because I love the models, but it will still be playable. The plan is to start out with around 1000 points and most of those models are already bought. In addition to the Dark Vengeange minis I have a Devestator squad from earlier and bought the new Terminators and a box of DA veterans.

The rhino and Ravenwing bike in the pic is all I have left from my original space marine force from 20 years ago. The rhino will be an interresting project; it will serve as both a looted wagon for my waaagh and a DA rhino (hopefully I can make this work...).

Any and all C&C is warmly welcome as I start a new adventure Cheers!

Below is the old post with everything from my Ork army. It is not finished or abandoned; simply 'resting'.
Spoiler:

Getting back into painting after the summer. This is my Waaagh! that I will be gaming with this winter. In the picture the models to the left are done and the ones to the right are in various states of modelling/painting. When I get down to it I will have a plan and finish it mob by mob so that there will be progress.

First off is to complete the gretchin mob and then possibly go for some vehicles.

12 ‘Ard boyz – finished
Trukk – finished
16 shootaboyz – finished
15 sluggaboyz - finished
18 Gretchin – finished
Bikerz - finished
Ghazghkull Thraka - started
Warboss – started
Nobz – started
12 Lootas – started
Deff Dread – started
Deffkoptas – started
Battlewagon – plasticardwip

As you can see there is alot of half-finished orks there... The idea is to have both fast Evil Sunz and 'eavy Bad Moons. I like both the colors and I get to do some varied painting.

TaWaaaaaaagh, the paint job on truk and kan is very crisp, I like It.

An other ork blog is what we need on dakka, tips and ideas for us Big Boss are more than welcome!

Keep going Subscribed

Nice painting, I like the crisp look you got going, and I love the attention to detail!

Thanks guyz, I'll keep posting. Allthough at irregular intervals. It depends on time allowed.

Your right; there can never be enough orks!!! And I like my orks colorful and crispy. Perhaps I'll add more mud and weathering to my vehicles - but the main colors I will keep 'cleanish'.

I like that kan most of all; its very well painted and putting that grot on the base is genius.

Post by: TaWaaagh

Thanks I'm happy with the grot on the base, but the real challenge was the grot peaking out of the hatch.

It was good fun to build and paint this 'kan. Hopefully I can finish more of them soon. An idea would be to put something original on each of their bases. What should I do next? Perhaps a Space Marine running for cover? In my games they often do...

I have a Kan thats about to step on a wounded ork, with torn-out gut and all...... He'll be painted like a goff, cause my orks hate goffs

Both good ideas I'll look into it later.

Here is my plan for the 'eavy stuff. The Batllewagon will be much larger than in this picture. Imagine a cab, platform, ramp and more dakka on top of the hull. They are all 'looted' from my local gamingclub (trades and paintjobs). I let them rest in soap for 14 days and scrubbed them with an old toothbrush.

But before I start messing with more projects I will finish more of the horde. Here are some pictures of the Bad Moons mob. Unfortunatly I didnt know the rules well enough when I glued them together. So there are some sluggaboyz and some shootaboyz. In my friendly matches they'll let it pass and I play it as one huge mob. If I get to join any tourneys it will have to be 2 mobs I suppose.

The cloth and leather here is mostly done. The guns will get another coat of Tausept Ochre so they match the metal colors of my killakan (like the nob at the front).

There was a request for a more detailed picture of the Killakan. Here it is:

Really looking good on here. cool yellowy creamy scheme on the bad moons. i like it and is there a list or are you working just on w/e you want?
everything looks awesome regardless and i really really like that grot on the kanz base very nice

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/01/22 17:01:18

Post by: TaWaaagh

So far there is no 'list'. I keep trying things out and loosing 99% of my games So I'll keep going and build/paint whatever suits me any day.

We are having a tournament in a few weeks - another chance for me to loose more games What I will do is to build a 'fun' army for it. The idea is simply 'more nutty stuff the better!' Waaagh! There will be a Warphead, Grootzookas, a homebuildt Battlewagon with shootaboys and this skorcha:

This is my first plasticard attempt and I'm pretty happy with it so far. There is a biker at the front, a heatshield to protect him, an engine case, and some trakks. What is missing is the skorcha itself. Not quite sure how to build that yet. Also I think I need to put more stuff at the front... It looks so tiny compared to the rest. Possibly some armor-plates at the front wheel or something.

What do you think? How do I make the front of this look good? And how to build a skorcha?

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/01/22 19:54:10

Post by: CommissarKhaine

Looking good! For the skorcha, don't you have a leftover from the kila kan set? The front is OK IMO, it happens with the "bike + track unit" design. If you feel it's a problem, you could integrate the driver's compartment a bit more into the hull.

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/01/22 20:23:04

Post by: TaWaaagh

Yes, C.Khaine. I got lots of spare stuff to use for the actual skorcha. But it needs to be supported by something, and it needs to be longer so that it is sort of balanced, AND it needs to be held by an ork...

Its easy enough to slap a skorcha on top - but I want it to look good too

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/01/22 20:29:41

Post by: CommissarKhaine

Use the skorcha arm from the kan and invert the the flamer nozzle. Alternatively, a spare grabbin'klaw from a BW might make a nice mechanical arm to attach a flamer too, and it contains all the bits to be operated by an ork.

A skorcha can easily be lenghtned by adding a longer tube running towars the flamer mouth.

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/01/22 22:38:51

Post by: TaWaaagh

Excellent idea. Why didnt I think of that?

All I need now is a couple of handlebars and something to support it

Post by: MaximusPrime

Haha, that drawing is awesome

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/01/23 22:21:48

Post by: TaWaaagh

A drawing says more than a thousand words.

So anyways - I'm not one to work on a project for too long before I find something else that draws my attention. Therefore I've decided to post my 1500 list for the tournament and build/paint it systematically. Hopefully it will be easier to complete then. Yes; I realize this is opposed to what I've said earlier. But so be it. I'll get on it tomorrow night (no promises).

Here is tonights work on the Battlewagon. 'How would a Big Mek build a deffrolla?' 'He'll use any scraps he can find lying around!' So that's what we'll do then.

Here it is put together. If you squint and look at it sideways you can imagine a cab on the top (where the eraser is but bigger), a turret for the Killkannon (where the cap is), a 'fence' or something odd around the top, and if you look really REALLY close you can imagine the red paint job as well!

Post by: SelvaggioSaky

I'm checking eagerly your progress mate.
Awesome stuff!
I don't like to use much of plasticard cause i do everything without a rule and pen and usually is a mistake. Your plasticard is pretty good!
I suggest to use the grabba klaw arm for the scorcha, is an amazing bit!

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/01/24 01:19:42

Post by: TaWaaagh

The grabbaklaw makes sense. But I don't own one. I'll see if any of my local gamers got one spare.

In the meantime I think I can make it work without as well. He only needs some bars and a handle for the killakan skorcha. We'll see

Some update to the horde. The Bad Moon shootaboyz are coming along. Still need a layer of Tausept Ochre to get the yellows as deep as I like. Next picking out some details, highlighting and giving the bases another go.

I've tried to use Tausept Ochre for the hardware and Iyanden Darkson for cloth and leather. Different materials should not look the same. But I'm not entirely sure it was worth it. What do yo think?

edit: the image didn't come out that great... it may not be possible to see what I'm on about.

bigfish wrote:i think the yellow is good but it just needs a wash of something to make it look less clean.. they are orks after all. apart from that all good

not mandatory, but i'd also put a wash on it (my orks are always dirty). In my case that'd be devlan mud.

But then again, clean orks would look nice as well for a change.....

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/01/29 18:40:12

Post by: TaWaaagh

Thanks for the nice comments

The plan is to make them a bit dirty - but not too much. The cloths and leather will get a tiny bit of devlan mud and for the guns I'm planning some scratches and find something to use as rust. I think I used snakebite leather for the Killakan and will see if it fits to this.

Its possible I do some more dirt on the boots. But its also ok to walk upright - my orks charge into battle - they don't crawl

Thank you and welcome to Matt and Killytoof.

The yellow isn't that hard to do. It just takes time. Thin paint and many layers. I will confess it is probably why progress is slow... I got a bit sick of it.

Post by: TaWaaagh

Thank you MrMerlin Waaagh!

Here are some detail pics of the mob.Fairly happy with how they turned out. As said earlier there is 2 kinds of yellow. One for the metals and another for cloth/leather. On the table it looks alright, but not sure if it comes through in a picture.

First up is the Nob.

Here are da 'eavies (one of them will go with some sluggaboys later on).

Up close and personal with the shootaboys.

And this is what they look like after they ran over you and are heading for the next fight.

C&C is very welcome. If you like you can also head over to my gallery page and comment/rate them there.

What am I going to paint next? There is not much to do on the Nobs and the Gretchin, so most likely I'll finish those first. Or is there something else you'd like to see?

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/02/14 22:00:06

Post by: bigfish

The red compliments the yellow on these models really well, also got to admire the strips on the rokit guy. very cool and very skilled. I also withdraw my dirt comment from before as a group together they look quite good clean, and as bad moons im sure they would have the teeth to just pay someone else to clean there stuff. very good show

oh and gretchin and then Nobs. keep them till last because they will be funner and it will make the gretchin less of a chore.

Thank you Bigfish I did mud-up the boots and used some browns as rust/dirt on the guns. But something deep inside me whispers '...stop before you ruin the colors...!'. So there is not enough of it to show up on the pics.

Thank you

The Gretchin Green was pretty random as it was the only green I had when I started. But now its growing on me and I'll do the rest of the army using the same colors (gretchin base, thraka wash, gretchin highlights).

These pics was taken with direct light from 2 spots. So there is some reflections. Would like to invest in a lightbox some day...

Progress is slow on the paint. But gluing stuff together is something I can do whenever I have a few minutes to spare. Tonight I spent some time rivetting my deffrolla.

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/02/17 23:41:52

Post by: bigfish

That deffrolla is looking promising

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/02/17 23:44:38

Post by: Viktor von Domm

well i followed you through the rabbit hole^^

there coould always be more rivets squeezed on that deathrolla...but i think rivetwise it looks quite good...

will there be spikes then? and i have yet to look through the rest of your thread^^

good work...and i like the fact you went for the pin rivets...that is no easy task! how did you get that rolla and the PC around it so nice and bended to the shape?

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/02/17 23:49:37

Post by: TaWaaagh

The pin rivets was the 'easy way' I feel. A good drill and some time - job done ^^ No need to invent the wheel (or the deffrolla...) all over again It was simply a matter of protecting my eyes while cutting pins.

The pc bending thing is a nice little cheat that I wish I took pictures of. I used some pipe from my local hardware store. Plastic tube for shower drain or something like that. Then I cut random pieces of pc, stuck them on with glue, wrapped the entire thing in rubber-bands and left it overnight.

Some of the thicker pieces came off, simply glued it again. After I did the rivets nothing come off it yet

edit:

As for spikes I'm not sure. Could be I just paint it up in random orkish colors. So it looks like the big mek used whatever scraps he had lying around.

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/02/18 00:00:48

Post by: Viktor von Domm

i am not that frim with orks... is a deathrolla nothing but a steam roller? then i think spikes are not needed...

i plan on getting me a bit of plastic tuibing to build something bigger that the recent builds... and yep, rubberbands for the win... you can use plasticglue and they dont react to the glue...! and well there are so many ways to get a riveted look... using pins is just but one way... we riveteers use many different methods to achieve the same look...and i wouldn´t want to call any of these easy or cheap... no way... it needs full concentration and a mind that doesn´t get bored too easily after numerous repetiions of the same action!^^

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/02/18 00:07:52

Post by: TaWaaagh

I wont presume to know a lot about rivets The pins just felt 'easy' for me. I cut all my rivet-pins while watching The Big Bang Theory. Perfect

The deffrolla is a steam roller kind of thing, yes. Lots of good hits for a cheap price... if the dice gods are with you!

Good Deffrolla man, but at least a couple of spikes just to make It more menacing should go on IMHO

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/02/18 11:38:59

Post by: MrMerlin

The deffrollla looks brutal! As Selvaggio said, a couple of spikes would'nt look wrong on it, but on the other hand the "plain" look is really cool as well! I'd propably keep it that way if I were you....

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/02/18 12:18:35

Post by: TaWaaagh

Hmmm yeah... spikes or no spikes. The idea is that it will be able to roll. If my plan works that is. With spikes it wont work for sure.

But then again; the plans are constantly changing True BIG MEK style.

hmmmm...if you really want a moving piece...than go for it... i like peeps that make "interaktive" models... if you do that i keep my lid shut on spikes^^

If You put little spikes in let's say three rows all around the perimeter It should roll anyway eheheh

Deffrolla looks good so far! Interesting method for rivets--what do you do with all those pins afterwards? Haha

As far as the spikes go, I'm confident that you could make it look good either way. And just as an idea, if you want roller to move but still have the menacing look of spikes, you could build a housing out of the normal plow that comes with the battlewagon that extends over the top of the roller with spikes on it that point out in front of it. Sorry, it's kind of hard to describe what I mean, but what I'm imagining is sort of the way the front of a snowblower looks, only with a deffrolla instead of an auger.

oh ooookay. got it. errrr

Anyways! Yes I get it; I will spike it up! Don't know how yet; but if you all want spikes; then spikes it is.

Tonight I got some minor updates done on the Battlewagon. Finished the extra tracks underneath and started to build up for the 'cab'. The foam is doing a stand-in for the cab atm.

I think I also finally decided against the spiked deffrolla: I don't want it to be 'sitting on top' of the tabletop. This way it looks like its for real.

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/02/19 21:46:27

Post by: Viktor von Domm

interesting structure... done that way spikes wouldnt make any sense... instead they could ruin the model... the way the inner tracks look i would definatly consider to scratchbuild the outer looted ones too... a totally scratchbuilt is for my opinion always bteer than a kitbash...

how will the "cab" look like? will this look as a whole more like a

which would be a good idea in my opinion...tho that might give you some armor issues perhaps...

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/02/19 21:49:39

Post by: TaWaaagh

hahaha excellent picture Viktor!!!

My model started out as a looted wagon. The current plans for the outer tracks is to cover them with the same stuff as the inner. To make it larger and more beefy.

At this point I see what you mean... a 100% scratchbuildt model would have been nice. But if this ends up anywhere near to what I have in my head - then I'll call it 'scratchbuildt' regardless

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/02/19 21:52:33

Post by: Viktor von Domm

oh... it is still a scratchbuilt even if you have some GW parts on it... the rules to name any model are not really strict i gather^^

and i think using that embossed PC as tracks will be good for the look... even if we are talking orks here... a human eye likes a bit of consistency every once in a while^^

Post by: TaWaaagh

It will take some time to finish. But I did get some time last night. Hacked, sawed, glued and generally abused some plasticard:

The deffrolla, cab, flagpole and extra armor are all detachable for easy transport.

Next step is to 'ork it up'. There will be more armor plates and I have to figure something out for the corners, so that it does not look so 'square' ...

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/03/03 22:31:35

Post by: Viktor von Domm

for now it looks a bit too boxy but as you said you´ll fix that... love the piston work you have done...i would suggest some grot sponsons to "unbox" it^^

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/03/03 23:39:22

Post by: SelvaggioSaky

I like the way this is turning out and a tip for the extra armor, cut a piece of plasticard the same dimension of the one You want to cover, then cut this in different shapes, glue them on and add little pieces to fix them together.
It's the thing I did for the bed on my 'alf truck and It looks pretty good IMHO

TaWaaaghs Dark Angels @ 2012/03/03 23:51:27

Post by: TaWaaagh

V.v.D - I'm not quite sure how I'm going to 'unbox' it. But something will turn up I'm sure What exactly are 'grot sponsons' ?

SS - Your stuff looks great. I especially like the grots hanging off the sides For the extra armor I'll do same-same but different. (not sure if that's a good expression...)

Well, thank you Victor. You have a higher belief in my building skills than I have

I'm going to build some rokkits and things on the sides (where the original tank would have guns). And possibly something on top of the cab. But atm I don't have any plans for them to be 'grotted'.

Well, turns out that maybe I can I will for sure have a go at it. Check the picture later in this post.

My girl is out of town this week. Perfect for me to get some cutting and gluing done. After driving her to the airport - this is what happens to the kitchen table in a few hours:

Its not how I prefer to work. But I guess it shows that I'm eager to get on with... I had an idea to make a workbench in the office, but well, yeah you know. Stuff happens and then some other stuff happens and next thing you know its summer

Anyways, the process to ork up my Battlewagon has begun! Here is the first weapon mount. At the moment I don't have any grot models to spare... so it had to be a rokkit operated by the co-driver. It is magnetized to the roof. The next plan is to do something of the same for both sides.

What do you think?

You are welcome to say it as many times as you like With my girl out of the house its possible I'll finish cut'n'glue this week. (its allowed to hope at least)

Regarding my table and orkish style; its also worth noting that the entire build is by ork standards. That means 'messure once! then hope!' So far so good Since you noticed the 'angry look' Selvaggio you deserve a teaser-pic of the grill:

And guess what! After all the silly robots and dumb fights have gone by, and I'm nearly shutting the thing off... Into the ring steps a DEFF DREAD! Excellent (at around 50-55min if you are desperate enough to watch this movie)

Hello Dakka! Its time to get back into painting.

Its getting closer to winter and I want to get back to painting. Last week I picked up 40K 6th edition, dug up my un-finished Waaagh!, and wondered where to start... This time around I wont be hugging the kitchen-table - since I have to clear it all up between sessions. No - I had an idea for something better. Over the weekend I put together this thing in our 'office' space (my better half was pretty happy about this).

I still have to fix some light and perhaps something to hold brushes and other often-used tools. But soon the Waaagh! will be back on

I figured it would be a good idea to start with my gretchin mob to 'warm up my brushes'. I'm a little rusty still But anyways, here they are:

As you can see they have no fashion sense - lots of different colored armour and clothes. My drill is also gone missing... so I have to come back to them and drill the barrels later.

Still working on camera settings too. But if you click it and zoom you'll get a better view. A rating of this and my older pics would be appreciated as well. Cheers.

I've had a break from my Waaagh in order to paint for a local competition. I wanted to compete in 3 different categories, but time wasnt on my side so I only finished 2.

Here are my entries for Sci-Fi' and 'Fantasy':

The Chosen didnt do as good as I had hoped. Possibly I 'chose' the wrong model or my lighting effects was not up to scratch. But thats allright: I'll try the same color scheme some other time

This orc was my first ever attempt at NMM. I'm very happy with how it turned out, allthough it is clear where I made misstakes... It also won the 'Fantasy' category.

The main prize for the competition went to a mounted rider in the 3rd category (large model). A very nice model with lots of details. It topped a list of some 20 models.

This was a fun event and hopefully it can grow in the future. Thanks to the organizers.

Nice to see you are still reading Please leave a comment either here or in my gallery. Thanks!

Work (as always) and Christmas celebrations have been keeping me away from my hobby. But now it looks like I will have more time to paint. At least for the coming month or so.

Progress on the bikez: The reds are turning out very nice I think. The next steps are more details and some dirt/rust/grit. I have a mental image of what the dirt could look like... but not sure how to make it..

Now I'm going to finish the biker mob over the next few days. After that I'm not sure what to do. If the rumours are true and the Dark Angels is the next army to come out then I might just have to paint some of that. The Dark Angels was my first army back in 2nd edition and it would be cool to re-visit some of those characters.

Celebrating 50 uploads!

What do you think should be my next project? You can read the first post in this tread to see what I have un-finished on my workbench. Or you can vote that I paint some Dark Angels. If you leave a comment or vote in my gallery then you can have a say in 'What next for TaWaaagh!?'.

those two competition minis i really like... i am usually a nit picking guy... but with these i have not really anything to bragg around... really good looking models... i even like their dark and yet nicely highlighted schemes... very well done!

yon bikers i think need a bit darkening tho... mighty bright fellas they are...

as for your next project... hmmm...i took a look again at your list... koptas and dredd i think.... and of course a scratchbuilt is always something that pleases MY eyes

but i guess finishing the bikers has to come first

oh...and happy new years!

Post by: TaWaaagh

Thank you for the feedback Viktor! The competition minis came out well... even if the Chosen is a bit darker than intended - I dropped it in my water-pot before the final highlights So there is an 'extra wash' layer there.... hehe

I can see what you mean about the brightness of the bikerz. But it could be more due to my camera-skills. I can never figure out the settings... Now I'm adding some rust effects and dirt. Then I'll post another WIP pic and see about it then.

I have a half-finished dredd on my shelf: your vote is noted (all scratch-builds are postponed atm, need to see some progress to my horde and finishing other stuff first)

Happy new years!

The biker mob lined up for a photoshoot today. Now I'm going to do something different...

When I first started 40K back in 2nd edition Blood Angels and later Dark Angels was my first army. I remember falling in love with the DA characters and their robes. To change things up a bit I will be putting aside the green... and paint something else green... Its a very different army at least. We'll see how it turns out I'll still be posting here, so stay tuned.

There are still a lot of unfinished and halfdone orks around. I promise to get back to them later.

Here are my bikers. All C&C is welcome.

Post by: TaWaaagh

One issue I have with the Dark Angels are the different colors for the different companies. The Deathwing and Ravenwing looks great on their own, but together with the green of the other companies it looks like 3 different armies. I dont like that. I want a unified look.

After some searching and wondering I think I found a solution that works for me. Why not paint a succesor chapter? If I get it right I can still capture the look of the DA with my own twist. Maybe even make some fluff for it. So far whats on top of my list is the Disciples of Caliban (name may be changed later). Their green and black armour also fit very well with the 5th company markings, so maybe a combination: The 5th chapter of the Disciples of Caliban(?).

Basically here are the 'changes' that I want compared to the 'standard' DA colors:
Marines: More white
Terminators: More green
Ravenwing: Less black

I also want all my DA to sport some sort of white cloth. Introducing some light contrast to everything. The more senior the member; the more of it. So to start off I made tabards for my marines. Here's what I did:

Rolling out some greenstuff.

Making sure the tabards are all the same size (or close at least).

This is the fidly stuff... After a few tries it came out allright.

Here's the finished tabards. You can see I focused on the bottom parts; the top will be hidden by the guns.

What do you think of all this?

I've been out on the road for a couple of weeks, but now I'm back to my brushes. Here is how the squad stands at the moment:

To see the different colors I recommend zooming in on the pic. The next step now is to wash the cloth and armour. Then I'll do details and get to the weapons and backpacks.

Cheers!

edit: I don't know why the picture looks so 'muddy'... It looks much better in the gallery - or zoomed in.

It's Ok anyway, green and mean sounds always good!

I'm skipping between different worksites and different hobbies at the moment. So not much coming off the assembly line. But I did nearly finish my Dark Angels tactical squad... Perhaps some pictures soon...?

Updates every few months, seems right, yes?
