Hello People at Dakka,
After being AFD(Away From Dakka) for a while..been lurking in the shadows tough ^^
Iam back with a new project.
Planning on making a diorama with not 1 but 2 dragons
Working on the first dragon at the moment..its the high elf dragon.
The plan is a scene depicting 2 dragons and their riders getting ready for ruining eachothers day
The second dragon will be the dark elf black dragon (still need to buy that one).
In my head it will look like the following..the black dragon wont be converted(or atleast not much) and will stay on the base that GW delivers with it(rocks and a tree wich supports the dragon).
The high elf dragon on the other hand will be converted since the flying/falling of a rock pose doesnt fit my plan..
Enough typing time for some pictures ^^
Hope you guys and girls like the progress so far c&c appreciated
Cheers
Mark

Time for a little update on the dragon.
What happened sofar?!
Well the armorplates on the neck have been sanded to a smooth look
Done some resculpting on the fleshy parts of the neck.
Since i dont want the spread out look on the wings but a more ready for takeoff and kick some ass look i swapped the wings arround..
So i drilled new holes and swapped the wings arround..now the wing that was supposed to go on the left side is now and the right side and the right wing is on the left side of the body.
As a result the little horns of the wing were now facing in a weird upward position..so i cut them off turned them in a downward facing position and glued them back on.
Wings are now glued on and with the help of some GS the gaps are filled and the wings are looking good
Enough tekst time for some pics!

Huh, how are you modelling the dragon, and still painting him while it's on sprue? o.O or is that a second/other dragon you got on the sprue?
Neat work on the wings, when you were describing it I tought it would never look good, but that's actually an interesting pose you created!

@Sveamore tvm for the kind words
@Soulcow nicely spotted ^^ there are 2 head options in the box 2 tail options and 2 options for spine details (option1 are spikes/horns option 2 is a sail like thingie going over the neck/spine) iam doing a hybrid with spines behind his head and the sail on the rear/tail.
And offcourse the dragon is build up completely and iam did the test paintjob on the spare parts.
The pose of the dragon was from the first time i saw it on the internet a problem for me...imho the dragon looks like he is falling of the rocks instead of swooping off them to ruin someones day.
Since i dont have great sculpting skills i took a little risk by going for this beasty to be honest this is my first serious attempt to go for some resculpting and its a small attempt in comparrison with the kickass green stuff conversions i saw here and on the web.
The wings were easy to do just drill holes straight down into the body..swap the wings arround redo the horny parts on the wing and use some filler to resculpt the join between wings and body.
@Lipsdapips tvm for the kind words
Had a moddeling day off today might get back with a update tommorow
Getting much motivation from the positive comments i get
Also cant wait to get to painting the beast like the blue still not sure on the fleshy parts i did on the test parts open for suggestions!
Have a nice evening

Hello People at Dakka,
Its time for slapping on some primer on the dragon!
Finished the first part of the base for the dragon.
I build it by sawing the base GW delivers with it in half and from there i build it up.
Materials used are treebark, pieces of cork a hot glue gun and super glue.
When i fit the onderground piece to the diorama base you wont see the sawed up GW base i used,it will be blended in with the rest of the scenery that will go on the definate diorama.
Time for some pics! and after that ill hopefully be back with a primed dragon ^^

Been working on the reins and glued on some parts on the dragon like the back of the seat and the lower part of the rider.
Also i have a nice picture frame were the diorama will be build on.
Since i have a new picture frame i have a nice flat surface to work on, so now i can work on the angle of the dragon on his little base.
I will show pics of that later on!

As promissed some pictures of the new picture frame.
I left the glass plate underneat for some extra strenght and to keep the wooden backplate from warping.
I coated the glass plate with some layers of ducttape for protection/flying glas in case of shattering.
I wil leave the wooden frame in this color cus i like it ^^
And also got a idea for a dio name...its gona be called Light vs Dark very qliche probably have to come up with something better then that ^^ open for suggestions
For the light vs dark idea...the plan is to do the scenic parts were the h.elf dragon is standing in lush/happy colors (sounds weird but time will tell what plans i have in my head ) and for the d.elf dragon its gonna be a more dark/sober color palette.
With the dragon on his new dio base wich doesnt have a warped wooden backingplate its gonna be easier to get going on his final pose on the small rocky base.
When that is done its time to get out the woodfiller to start working on a part of the ground (really looking forward on starting on the scenic aspect)
Lets check out how it looks.....picture time

Hello SJM,
Firstly thnx for your kind words
And secondly i clean flash/moldlines on sprue(i do forget to do it sometimes tough and not only on sprue ^^) also when painting on sprue i look were a join between the part and the sprue is what you wont see after clipping it off
Nice example was the torso of the rider...the part were the bottom of the torso joined the sprue wont show damage after clipping it off the sprue after painting it.
So sometimes i leave parts on the sprue i look for parts that arent easily damaged after clipping them of the sprue.
So i look for spots that are easily touched up with paint or parts that will get glued on other parts like the fins that will be glued onto the head.
When above steps are done i cut/clip excess sprue parts off clean up the part..moldlines flash etcetera.
Hope the explanation is understandable iam not a big hero in writing in english previous pictures show better what iam meaning to say
And offcourse sometimes i pin parts..lets just say iam weird in my way of modeling ^^
@KillaCam tvm for the kind words
Have a nice evening and thnx for viewing!

Hey all,
A little before i have to work update!
Started on the first stage of the base.
Masked of the pictureframe to protect it.
Materials used for now are:treebark, cork, woodfiller and one of the scenic parts that come with the h.elf kit.
The plan is to create a colorfull scene were the h.elf dragon stands, and a darker scene on the side of the d.elf dragon.
When the wood filler has dried i will add some sand over it to get a nice and better looking underground.
Hope you guys like it sofar

Oh... Wow!
That first dragon is awesome! Really reminds me why I like fantasy. I'm looking at my shelf of Warriros and really wondering why I'm wading through batch painting warriors and not jumping into the massive monsters they offer...
But I do need to pick your brains on something... How do you do the leathery wings?? I must know
87654
Post by: ayoku
@ Corporal Chaos tvm
@ Para not gonna convert looked at the picture again and saw it was one i didnt mean to post ^^ just missplaced the dragon on the scenic base looking in the wrong way ^^ nicely spotted tough
Will post some pics tommorow with him in the proper pose
@Knightly tvm for the kind words done some work on the base today also...forgot to post some pictures he has a nice rocky and snowy base.
@EyeamRai tvm for the kind words as said to Knightly i will post some more pics of the stonehorn asap
@Zambro tvm for the kind words!
The effect of the wings are quite simple to achive.
Start of with the basecoat in whatever color you like/want.
If needed mask of any parts you dont want to have the base color on(did that on the spiny parts of the wings with some liquidmask)
When thats done drybrush with a slightly lighter color.
After applying the drybrush i followed the lines of the wing with some white paint...also in this case take a color you like/want
When finished it looks weird but the last step will sort this out
Tke a wash of your liking and thin it down a little bit i used GW Reikland fleshshade and some lamian medium 1:1 ratio.
Paint over the fleshy/leathery parts i done 2 layers..be sure to let the wash dry between each step
And there you have it leathery looking wings^^
I will post a step by step when i get to the wings of the black dragon
Thnx for watching!

@ EyeamRai tvm for the kind words
I've done some more work to the dragon today.
Been working on the wings here is how i done it starting from the base color the the finished product.
Step by step explanation how i did it(ofcourse you can do it with other colors also)
1.Basecoat the wing with VGC Heavy brown
2.Added 2 layers of GW Aggrax earth to darken things up and create a shade
3.Added a wash of GW Nuln oil focussing on the recesses were the fleshy parts meet the spiny membrane.
4.Now with the help of thicker Nuln oil you stipple a patern on the washed area (i was Lucky to have a older nearly empty pot of nuln oil wich started to thicken up a bit if you dont have it put some on your palette and let it slightly dry up)
5.Repeat step 4 if youre not happy enough with your stippling.
6.Take the basecoat color of your wing again and follow the shape of the wings so in my case i went back with VGC Heavy brown slightly thinned down with water.
7.If your happy with the result you now blend in the colors a bit more with a overall wash in my case i used GW Reikland fleshshade.
Thats it!
Also been working on the rocks underneath the dragon.
And glued on some bits
Hope you all like it c&c apreciated
Have a nice evening and weekend!

Dont have a deadline on this project..tough i think i should be easily able to finnish it before the end of the year
Looking forward on starting on the base of the dragon and also another new thing for me will be working with Vallejo still water to create a little water work trough the center of the dio base..
Things left to do.
1.Paint up the seat that goes on the dragons back
2.Paint some small bits on the dragon and rider.
2a.Last check if i missed some paintwork/touching up.
3.Glue the white/blue dragon in place same goes for the black dragon.
4.When step 3 is done i can glue on the heads of the riders so they will look at each other in anger ^^
5.Basing the dark part of the dio (got some plans to make the black dragon side a bit grim and darker then the other side thinking of a dead high elf horse well see what will happen along the way)
6.Create some waterwork.
7.Make some real nice pictures and look back on a nice project ând start thinking about a next adventure ^^
In a nutshell thats whats left to be done really not in a mad rush and enjoying this project atm (isnt that what counts!)

Looking very spiffy! What kind of stuff do you use for the water?
87654
Post by: ayoku
@Remco thnx alot
@Leviathus Tvm i used Vallejo still water for the river..i had a small bottle wich i emptied already bigger bottle is ordered
The stuff is really great and dries up up perfectly transparent...only thing...it shrinks so you need a few layers to build it up
Thnx for viewing

A little update
The water is done took me 5 layers of Vallejo still water to get the desired look.
First time working with Still water and i must say it's great stuff to work with.
Only thing to keep in mind when working with still water is it shrinks a bit so you need to build up more then one layer to get the desirable effect.
When the last layer has dried(tommorow) i can start working on placing the dragons...glue the blue dragon on his base and glue on the riders head wich means the first of the 2 dragons is completely finished then.
Black dragon needs a little bit of work before he can be glued on to his base.
Also done a free hand banner for one of my skeleton warriors curious what you guys think about it
Have a nice day and weekend!
Thnx for watching

Love the banner on the skeleton warrior-very characterful.
Your painting is really good- clean lines and the diorama has been a pleasure to watch grow.
Just one thing- can we get a better picture of the water effects?

@ IGtR Youre welcome!
The still water needs 24 hours to completely dry
Guess it depends on how big the surface is
Also think if you do like a small puddle it will dry faster then on a bigger surface.
Also it has to be brought up in thin layers 1 a 2 mm.
Hope this information helps

So now the water is done i can start putting the dragons back on.
The blue one is glued in place again still need to find a way to get the black one on the base.
The rocks wich are holding the treestump and the dragon is hollow and iam not enthousiastic about gluing it on the cork rocks that are on the dio base.
Probably will fill up the cavity under the rock and pin it on the cork base we will see what happens ^^
For now i have some photo's with the blue dragon glued in place and the black one on the base for a dryfit and for tour viewing pleasure
Happy holidays!

Project gets close to finnishing some little things left to do
*Paint the claws on the wings of the black dragon
*Finnish the rider of the black dragon ( little bit of painting left and some part gluing)
*Blend in the plastic base of the black dragon with the dio base ( add some flock and rocks)
*Try and make some kick ass pictures when dio is done( sofar i found it a pain in the a$$ to make nice pics capturing all)
*And think about a new project probably wont be a diorama(already thinking bout the next model to get)
Thnx for watching and stay tuned for the final pictures

Awesome work all around!
What bits did you use for the base? I'm thinking about doing some urban ruins bases, but have no idea where to go for things like those tubes, cogs and plasicard bits...
87654
Post by: ayoku
@Para tvm mate
@Leviathus there shall be some high lighting done to the reds there still w.i.p and thnx for the comment on the gold happy how it turned out but still have a lot to learn in the ways of NMM
@Zambro The little cogs and screws came from some old watches i had lying arround (if you have some watches laying arround really worth taking them apart ) also wrecked a old electric razor i had laying arround got the bigger cogs from it
Ofcourse you can use electric wire the protective tube some brushes have on them when you buy them different sorts of plastic card rods etc different sorts of mesh cardboard and skewers can also be good friends in creating urban stuff drinking straws are quite good to work with
Bits of sprue can do magic to your bases
Also got some example pics for you
Hope this helps
Btw probably i will paint up the first 2 bases i shown here tommorow got them primed earlier today
Thnx for viewing!

Hi guys and girls on Dakka havent been posting for a while but iam back
Time for some eldar goodness
Got my hands on some old skool white metal eldar characters and walkers
They were painted in a decent tabletopquality..but since i dont play games it was time to getMr. Nailpolish remover out and let the mini's swimfor a while.
I have the following characters:
The Avatar of Khaine-Nearly done need to get some real strong glue to glue on his hair
Phoenix lord Maugan Ra-Basing needed
Phoenix lord Asurmen- WIP
Eldrad Ultrhan-Nearly done basing and some painting left.
Phoenix lord Fuegan The burning lance-Needs primer and paintjob
And Phoenix lord Baharroth The cry of the wind-Needs primer and paintjob and some ideas on the base since the mount under his feet is broken off
2 old skool eldar war walkers one will be standard other one will be converted slightly
And a random white metal Swooping hawk(wich still needs to be cleaned from his paint)
Enough typing time for some pictures
Hope you guys like the progress sofar c&c much apreciated.

Bought some sisters of the thorn yesterday and found out i didnt have any nice blue/gray in my paint asortment...
So went back to my local G Dub and found the spellweaver also...couldnt leave her behind at the shop so....
Added 2 extra sprites i had spare from my treeman kit and smacked some corax white on her.
Bases of the Sisters are done with cork and some aftermarket pillars.
I will add some stirland mud later on to get some texture on the bases.
Hope you all like it sofar
