I've been reading through all the blogs and I really like that you can see the progression of skill and the history of the projects that people have been working on.

I have a ton of things that I want to do and I'm only working on a few of them currently.

I'm repainting my Orc & Goblin army for Fantasy. I'm also working on some Lizardmen for a friend.
I'm working on a few objectives for the goblins and I have some terrain type things floating around in my head.
Once I get on a good painting schedule and build up some skills, I want to repaint my entire Tyranid army. I think that is a while off though.

I'll probably come back and make an actual list of project ideas as things come to me. Started a project list below

The blog's magic is working already! I'm feeling compelled to take a few pics of what I'm working on now so I can get them up here and then start painting!!

Homework first though.

Anyway, I'm Rai (pronounced ray) it's nice to meet everyone. I'd better get to work!

Project List - My main goal is to improve my painting and modeling skills. I hope to do so by steadily working on these projects.

Orcs and Goblins army - in progress
Ogre Kingdoms army
Lizardmen for a buddy - in progress
Relic Knights - in progress
Cult Mechanicus
Super Dungeon Explore base set
Tyranid army
Imperial Knights army 5 Knights! I'm so excited!
Harlequin Army - in progress
Khador battle box COMPLETE!
Space Marine army built via Kill Teams
random display pieces for FLGS - in progress
random terrain pieces for FLGS - in progress
random terrain pieces, objective markers, and conversions - in progress

This is what I've got going on right now. A bunch of goblins soaking away.

And my first attempt at making an objective marker for the goblins. It needs a few more details and then some varnish and it will be done!

I've got a campaign game coming up soon. It's 1500pts and I'm playing the orcs and goblins. I got the second black orc standard bearer built and primed. I need to build unit champions for them as well. I'll probably do that as well as slap some paint around tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have something worthy of pics.

So I've worked out what I need to do to get my 1500pt list ready for battle. I've got a decent bit of work ahead of me.

My general is a character of my own but he will be using the Skarsnik and Gobbla model and rules. This will be the first month he will actually get to use those rules until now he's just been a Night Goblin Warboss.

Skarsnik and Gobbla - build and paint

Goblin big boss on gigantic spider - assemble and finish the base

Night goblin boss w great weapon - build and paint

Night goblin and shaman - finish painting

Spider riders unit - finish painting

Night goblin units 1 & 2 - finish painting

Black orcs units 1 & 2 - finish painting

I also need to get all the basing sorted out as well. The story so far is that the night goblins found lots of gold in these caves and are obsessed with protecting it. They will have what looks like piles of gold on their bases. I don't know about the orcs and regular goblins. I have some yellow craft sand that I may use on the other bases to represent gold dust. I don't have any experience with making scenic bases so I want to keep it simple.

I'll be making custom movement trays for the final 2000pt army. I don't have to worry about that until January.

I'm going to get to work and post some pics of my progress later!

I got Skarsnik and Gobbla built and primed. I don't know when I will start painting them up.

I worked on a few Black Orcs and got my goblin big boss. I've got some pics. Sorry they're terrible. I'll figure how to take better ones asap.

C&C welcomed.

That is a very bright green giant spider.

It is quite green! I had this type of spider in mind when I was painting my unit.
I named the one the goblin is riding Grelynx after the inspiration spider.

I didn't get any painting time in yesterday due to school work and spending some quality time with the wife. I don't know if I'll get to the brushes today either. I've got more school work to do with parts of my assignment due tonight. I also have to work for a few hours at my FLGS.
I suppose if I stopped meandering around Dakka I could possibly get to all the things on my to do list...
Possibly. I don't think I'll find out today though!

I hope everyone is having a great day!

That thing doesn't even look like a spider! It gives me that 'oooh creepy, and possibly poisonous, best to stay away' vibe rather than the normal spider vibe. Plus horrifying spike legs

So far I have just briefly scrolled through for the pictures, lucky me finding this one on the first page Usually I have to trawl through dozens of pages to catch up!

I also like the blog name-- fun D&D item, that.

As to the latest update, work at a game store huh? Seems interesting.

Grimdork - A friend of mine showed me that spider pic when I was talking about painting my spiders green. I was originally thinking of going with a darker green but, after getting over the horror of seeing that spider , I decided to go with the bright green.

Yep, I work in a game store. It's pretty fun and helps keep me supplied with plastic and cardboard crack. I actually owned a game store for about 8 years. I ended up having to close up due to some health issues. It's much less stressful going in for a couple hours a week and not having all the responsibilities of running a business.

My back is feeling a bit better. Now I just have to finish all the school work that I have procrastinated on and that happens to be due tonight and then I can get back to my painting table.

I am super behind on the painting that I have for my campaign this month. With any luck, I can get caught up this week. It will take a bit of discipline on my part. Though now that I have said on here that I will get caught up, perhaps I will push myself a little harder. Go blog being good for stuff!

Anyway, homework now.

Thanks for the well wishes Grimdork. I hope you've had a good weekend!

I have two campaign battles to get in this month. I'm still working on getting my 1500pt force battle ready.

All of the units need some work. I still have to do about 99% of the bases. Thank goodness I'm not doing anything too complicated there.

The pile of bits is the Skarsnik and Gobbla model. That is probably what I will work on next just so I can get everything on the board if I need to do that before I'm done painting.

With the exception of the goblin big boss on spider (aka Zixit Swiftstix and Grelynx) and Skarsnik (aka Izzig da Aurum and Hiiburp), my goblin hero models are very underwhelming. I don't have very much experience with conversions. And by not very much, I mean zero. I have a gazilling OnG bitz so I may try to do something simple.

I used one of the banners for the black orcs that requires some type of free hand work to not look too strange. What was I thinking??? I will need to find some VERY simple design. Any ideas?

What type of cameras do people use to take pics of their minis? I just have my camera and as you can see, my pics aren't that great.

I found an interesting video where a guy was converting skull pass night goblins into hobgoblins. It has given me at least a guideline to use to try and see if I can come up with some more interesting looking characters for the army.

My boss at the game store asked me if I would paint up some of the terrain he picked up for the shop. Of course I said I would. The first piece I'll be working on for the shop will be the deathknell watch. I'll put some pics of it up once I've started working on it.

Oooh sweet, is that the one with the crazy tower or was it more of... you know what it's called google isn't it? Ahh, yeah that one is pretty cool. I think I prefer witchfate tor, but DKW is still pretty cool.

Good luck on your conversions

Eyeamrai's Blog of Many Things ~ 18 November - Still around @ 2014/11/13 06:10:06

Post by: EyeamRai

He may have the other terrain piece as well there were a bunch of boxes and I just grabbed one. I know there were a few of the DKW so I'll get to do a couple of different versions of it. I'm kinda excited about that actually.

I am hecka nervous about these conversions. I don't know why. I have a metric crap ton of skull pass gobbos. I could probably hack 50 of them into pieces and not miss any of them. I may just cut one all up just to move past this block I've got in my head.

Eyeamrai's Blog of Many Things ~ 18 November - Still around @ 2014/11/13 14:10:15

Post by: GrimDork

Yeah maybe do that. It's not really hard, and gets to be fun pretty quick.

Eyeamrai's Blog of Many Things ~ 18 November - Still around @ 2014/11/14 01:26:16

Post by: EyeamRai

So I cut a model up like I mentioned I might do just to get over the nerves of it all.

The cutting up of the model didn't go so badly so I decided to see if I could make a conversion out of those pieces.

Since I cut him in half, I attempted to lengthen the torso because I want the characters to be taller than the regular rank and file guys.

Green stuff and I... well... we have not established a working relationship yet. What a cluster f*&% that was! I do not know how people actually MAKE things out of green stuff. I could barely make a little ball!

I know, just like with everything, it will take time and practice. I'm not sure where this is going to fall on my list of priorities as of yet.

So anyway, I fought with the green stuff and lengthened the torso and then I gave it a bigger hood, again hoping to make it stand out. I also cut off a spear tip and added an axe head to make it look like a great weapon.

I didn't want to give him a shield arm but the torso looks so awkward that I needed to block it from view some how. I put a little bag on his back in another attempt to cover the odd torso. Maybe with some paint it won't look so funny.

We shall see. Anyway. Pics.

Meh it's a goblin, I think you can get away with a lot just for that reason. But it looks fine to me in any case so truck on!

Hi Ustrello! Thanks for stopping in. I have both fantasy and 40k as well. I had planned to get back into playing 40k but then I joined in a fantasy campaign and decided that I would repaint my entire OnG army. I have a LOOONG way to go. I made the sad realization that a bunch of my Tyranid army is all busted. I have lots of repairing ahead of me before the bugs hit the table so no 40k for me for a while.

@Grimdork - I feel the same. "meh it's a goblin" I think that's why I'm a bit unhappy because I did a fair amount of work for what seems like nothing. I'm going to get him painted up though and see how he comes out.

The battles have been assigned for the campaign. I will be fighting Vampire Counts and Ogre Kingdoms. This is going to be tough!

The Vampire Counts and I have been hashing it out throughout the campaign. I think we've fought 4 times and I have 2 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss there.

I've only fought against the Ogre guy once and he absolutely brutalized me. It was awful. I think we played at 500pts. I shudder to think about what kind of nasty things he gets to put on the table at 1500!

There will be all sorts of happening in these battles as well. We are in the middle of chaos induced winter storms so at the beginning of each turn we have to roll for the effect. I believe the effects range from nothing to being snow blind and having limited line of sight and movement to getting struck by flying chunks of ice. Also all of the terrain will be mystical. We will be rolling to see what they are as we encounter them and re-rolling any results of "normal". It's going to be insane!

Model-wise I haven't done much today. My underwhelming characters have really taken the wind out of my sails. I got some primer on the little guy I made and that's about it. I really need to get on the ball, especially now that the games have been assigned!

@Grimdork - Your snotling/goblin/smurfs sound super fun! I cannot imagine making hats for snotlings - they are so tiny!!

Eyeamrai's Blog of Many Things ~ 18 November - Still around @ 2014/11/15 06:19:55

Post by: GrimDork

It was really easy though! You just get a wee blob of greenstuff and roll it into a rough cone, then squish it into place on their head. It's a hat so it can be a little lumpy or misshapen no worries. Then the flat hooky bit of the sculpting tool put the iconic crease where the hat bends over towards the front. Little work smoothing it out, done.

Ogres do sound kind of scary to battle using goblins. Even if you get them with a flank charge... that one ogre can put down enough hurt to cancel some of your rank/standard/flank bonusi. Still seems like the way to go, just hope he doesn't have any of those gougers or other nasty things tearing up your flanks

I got some paint on the little guy that I made as well as the skarsnik and gobbla model tonight.

I need to figure out a way to get some better photos up here. I'd like some advice on how to become a better painter but with the pics I have, you can't really see my starting point.

I'm still working on getting paint down in thin coats. I cant consistently get my paint to a workably thin spot.

I feel like I learn things to a certain point then I will go more than a week without painting and all the knowledge falls out of my hands and I have to learn how to hold a brush all over again.

I hope I can get into a good painting schedule, well life schedule really, where I can paint regularly and actually build some skill.

I'm discouraged with my pics so I'm not even going to attempt to post any tonight.

I don't know your home life, i've got a toddler and have found having a mobile painting station really helps me get little bits of work in. I still have longish droughts of inactivity, but I still get more done than I used to.

Well, I for one am happy to see you take up the holy exacto and start chopping up your little plastic dudes Gobbo's are a good place to start as you can get away with a little bit of a ragged look to the work, and as you pointed out, you have loads of the little buggers so messing up a few isn't a major heart-ache.
GS skills will come, just keep playing with the stuff I'd recommend getting a couple of sculpting tools and a couple of clay shapers if you haven't already.

Hope the antibiotics are kicking in.

Thanks for stopping in Monkeytroll!

I haven't tried chopping up any additional gobbos yet. I got some paint on the one that I made. His torso is quite... awkward...

I have some of the really old night goblins that are a little bit bigger and the feet, torso, head, and arms are all separate. I think I'll start with one of those as the base for my next experiment.

I think the antibiotics are working? I'm not in nearly as much pain as I was. But I'm just about through my run of the antibiotics and I'm definitely not cured. I'm pretty sure my wife is going to make me go back to the doctor's office next week.

@Grimdork - Yep, that project list is going to keep me busy for sure. Each of those list items is a pretty big undertaking. I'm sure I'm going to come up with several more projects as well.

@ayoku - Thanks for stopping in! I love that green. It's a color I mixed up myself. Of course I didn't write down what went in the blend...

I probably won't get any modeling time in this weekend. I work all day at the FLGS and it's my wife's birthday. She wants to go bowling and boozing tomorrow night so that's what we are going to do! Well, she and some of our friends are anyway. I will mostly be drinking water and watching. Stupid kidney infection.

Then on Sunday, I have a couple of assignments for school to turn in. It wouldn't be too bad except I procrastinated all week. Oops!

I'm sure I will be around here though. Can't. Stay. Away...

I'm still running super behind on schoolwork. Ugh.

I'm in the last 16 days of the semester and they are doing their best to kick my butt.

Of course, if I stopped procrastinating, my butt would be taking much less of a beating.

All that to say, there's a 2000pt WHFB tournament on Sunday!

I really want to play but there is absolutely no way I can do it if my school work isn't done.

Now I just have to convince myself to work instead of thinking about army lists...

My best bet will be to come up with my list Sunday morning and spend the time between now and then doing school work, right? Right??

Yeah it gets harder and harder to not procrastinate as deadlines loom.

Probably best to do work. I have been known to cram, it works... but you don't retain the info nearly as well after the test.

After all the rushing around last week we did not have enough people show up for the WHFB tournament.

While I am disappointed, I'm glad to have more time to work on the army.

There isn't a painting requirement but you do have to meet the minimum 3 colors plus basing if you want to be considered for the Best Painted Army prize.

My army isn't anywhere near where I want it to be but I always want to be in contention for the prize if at all possible.

My friends have convinced me that I should make a 5 Knight army to play in the monthly 40k tournaments.

Playing with just 5 models sounds amazing! I'm feeling a little oppressed by my billions of goblins right now.

I'll probably buy my first Knight some time later this month.

I did a little painting today. I worked on the bases for Skarsnik and Gobbla and the Goblin Warboss on gigantic spider. No pics of them. They're pretty boring.

I also worked on a few of my characters and command models.

That's all for now!

FIVE KNIGHTS? That seems ridiculous. Of course 40k is kind of ridiculous anyway so go for it if it sounds fun

Five Knights is TOTALLY ridiculous!! I am happy to accept the challenge!!

Of course if I hate building and painting them I would not feel bad about moving on to a different challenge...

For now I'll keep working on the orcs and goblins. Once I get the 2000pts for the campaign and the build I want to use for the store tournaments all painted up, I'll probably just keep painting them unit by unit while I'm working on other stuff.

I'm getting ready to go battle the Vampire Counts.

I know she has drastically increased the amount of magic in her army since the last time we played.

I'll try to get some decent pics of the battle.

Wish me luck!

Luck!

I fear for your goblin lack of leadership against the fear causing undead... make sure you grind them into dust out of sheer spite

That was some battle!

We had some snow situations to deal with as part of the campaign. Blinding snow limiting movement and all that.

The goblins did fail their fear tests and fight at WS 1 for more battles than I would have liked.

The fanatics were really devastating in this game. Devastating to me!

They did manage to kill her general who was an awful beast of a thing.

They also killed MY general.

I rolled animosity only once during that game but once was enough!

I ended up having to charge the nearest enemy unit with a unit of Night Goblin archers. I had to release the fanatics hidden in that unit. There were three of them and they went 3, 4, and 7 inches. My charging unit had to run through all three of them which killed half the unit.

It was a mess!!

My MVP of the game was the Goblin Big Boss on Gigantic Spider. Zixit and Grelynx kept her unit of Black Knights from running down my flank. They finally charged into the knights and, although it took two rounds of combat, killed them.

She won but it wasn't a massacre. My general took a permanent wound to his left arm. Good thing he just passed down his great weapon to pick up Skarsnik's prodda this round. My main shaman now has Hatred for all Vampire Counts. I wish those wounds had happened the other way around! The Vampire general got a head wound and will now have to roll for either Stupidity or Frenzy before each game.

I took a few pics. None of them are that great but I'll put them up here none the less!

Yep! Those fanatics are so brutal. I love it when the dice fall in my favor and I get to do d6 strength 5 armor piercing hits to my enemies. But man when they run through my lines...

I'm other gaming new, I have bought a ton of the X-men Dicemasters boosters. The game is pretty fun. I've gotten so many for two reasons 1 - the boosters are only 99cents and 2 - and this is a big sparkly, neon rainbow 2 - My wife has shown interest in the game!

These are exciting times.

I want to go on ebay and buy more of the Psylocke dice because she loves that one in particular. (It is purple and pink.) She doesn't want me to though. She likes opening the boosters.

Yeah I'm really glad that she likes to play board games. We just learned how to play Kings of Tokyo and she seemed to like that one. She mentioned that she wouldn't mind getting Ticket to Ride for Christmas. I'm lucky that she likes games and is supportive of me playing all the things that I play.

I want to get my Skarsnik and Gobbla model finished. I thought it looked really great on the board yesterday. It's definitely my best painted model by far!

I've got to figure out how to take some better pics. I can't document my learning to paint process if I can't show what's going on.

I'll be getting my first of the five Knights soon, probably this weekend, as a present for making it through this semester. I'm looking forward to that.

I'm going to pull out my Tyranid codex and make a couple of Kill Teams.

I think I will also acquire the Space Marine codex and some dudes for even more Kill Teams.

But! Fantasy is still highest on my priority list right now.

I need to figure out what 250 points I'm adding into my list for the next round. Right now I'm thinking a spear chukka and a giant.

We should have enough people for the tournament on the 4th so I need to revisit the 2000pt list I made up last time.

But first, Skarsnik and Gobbla. I wanna get them completed before the new year rolls in. That's my goal.

What kind of device are you using to take photos?

Also, my best shots come from outside in moderate daylight. Just like regular sunny days.

I look forward to your Knight work. Also, Tyranid kill teams sound very interesting I could see a few warriors and some stealers or gaunts, or various other combinations, being pretty fun.

I dunno how good they are, but giants always seemed like they would be fun. If you are to do a spear chucka, seems like getting more than one would be optimal so you can concentrate fire, but I haven't played WHFB in at least one edition.

I've been using a combination of my iPhone and my wife's camera, a little Kodak something. Neither of them are impressing me at the moment.

I have a Nikon Cool Pix that is lost in the aether somewhere.

I'm going to try taking some pics outside. I'm also going to make a little light box and see how that works out.

I know I want to make a team with a Broodlord and some stealers. I'm not sure I want to play with gaunts though. I'm not quite ready to overrun my painting table with another horde just yet.

I'm super stoked about the Knights. I'm trying to decide if I'm going with one of the established House themes or come up with something myself.

For fantasy I need another big target that can move quickly and threaten a flank. The giant is 200pts that leaves me with 50pts. I might be able to upgrade one of my heroes to a BSB and get a magic banner for that. I may be able to do that and then get both spear chukkas in the next month. I think that might work...

Eyeamrai's Blog of Many Things ~ 18 November - Still around @ 2014/12/18 16:09:15

Post by: GrimDork

BSB sounds like a solid idea for low LD troops regardless of magic

Eyeamrai's Blog of Many Things ~ 18 November - Still around @ 2014/12/18 19:49:01

Post by: EyeamRai

So, upgrading one guy to a BSB and taking a giant will leave me with 25pts left to spend. I'm not sure what I'll spend them on... probably more night goblins.

I've been thinking about my Knights today. I think I have decided on House Cadmus.

They'll be green, yellow and silver with some black and red accents.

I still have to decide if I'm going to just change how I use the accents on each knight or pick and additional accent color that will get used.

I won't decide that until I've actually started working on them.

These guys are going to be younger nobles from lesser houses. They're all going to be Knight Errants that are showing signs of disrepair.

I can't wait to get started!

I think the first Tyranid Kill Team I'm going to try out is gonna be 4 Shrikes (flying warriors) with devourers, lashwhips and boneswords.

I think having the extra movement will be beneficial based on the game I played on Sunday.

It will be an easy place to start since it's only 4 models and I already have 4 warriors put together.

Of course they are in the paint scheme that I want to strip...

I'm not ready to begin The Great Tyranid Re-Paint yet. I just can't face it with so many orcs and goblins left.

Speaking of the orcs and goblins, I got a new musician...

Eyeamrai's Blog of Many Things ~ 18 November - Still around @ 2014/12/19 00:57:30

Post by: GrimDork

Bwahahah I like the musician.

Ahh 4 shrikes, now that sounds fun Each one is a mini-monstrous creature. Three wounds, heavy bolter equivalent weapon (I think), jump pack, melee viability. Ouch. If you can catch your opponent's dudes by themselves they're going to get destroyed.

Eyeamrai's Blog of Many Things ~ 18 November - Still around @ 2014/12/19 06:01:09

Post by: EyeamRai

Yeah, the musician is pretty great isn't he??

There was a mooning standard bearer as well but I got out bid on him.

With the shrikes I was think of running them in 2's. The devourers are Assault 3 so 6 shots then assault if I need to. I think it would wreck the ork team I played against. He played 5 Nobs.

I started on my alien walls for the LoER competition. I hope I can get them all painted up in time.

Tomorrow, I'll add some sand to base and seal up the foam edges with some PVA glue.

Then some primer and painting.

If I'd started earlier I would have added some Tyranid bits to the base as well but that would add too much to my painting time.

Maybe if I didn't paint so slow...

I'm probably going to pick up Knight #1 tomorrow.

I'm super excited even though I'm not going to start working on him right away.

Anyway, I took some WIP pics of my alien walls.

Questions? Comments? Loud screams of protest? Let me know!

Yeah, getting that primer coat on it makes it make more sense.

I'm trying to decide what colors I want to go with.

I want to do some oranges and yellows and reds but I struggle with those colors.

I'm thinking I may go with purples and pinks with splashes of reds. I think I can make that look okay.

I want to start painting but the wife and I are about to bake about a million Christmas cookies.

Sugar coma here I come!!!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Hi Squall

I'm gonna go with a purple scheme.

My plan right now is to drybrush some pinks, greens, and reds across all the... spires? openings? I don't really know what to call them...

Then do some purples washes and see how that looks.

For the ground I'm thinking green and brown.

I'm hoping to get some paint down on them today.

Thanks ayoku!

I'm still painting it up. I'll put some more pics up later today.

In other news, I must have been a good kid this year because Santa brought me a scroll saw!! I'm very excited. I've named him Clyde.

I've already warned my family that all gifts next year will be handmade via scroll saw.

Now I just have to figure out how to use it.

In still other news, Knight #1 has been acquired!

His name will be Sir Wyatt. He is the youngest and most reckless of the 5. He spends lots of time out hunting in his Knight Errant armor. His armor shows signs of his abuse.

I figure since this will be the first one I'm doing, any mistakes I make in learning how to build/paint the model can be explained away by his story.

I'm not sure when I'll get to start working on him though.

Once I'm done with the walls, I need to get my army ready for the WHFB tournament next weekend.

Finally, in my last bit of exciting news, my wife found a Thundercats Tower of Omens for $5. It looks really neat. I'm going to paint it up all 40K style and use it as the fortress for the Space Marine army that is going to get built one Kill Team at a time over the next year.

I should probably get back to painting if I want to finish in time.

I don't start classes again until March so I've got time for the next one too.

My wife was just asking me if I'm going to do it again and I was explaining the themes to her.

If it's a neat theme I will definitely try to make something. I was not inspired by the toilet theme from a few comps ago and I had time on my hands then too.

I've got enough projects that I can keep myself occupied if I don't like the next theme but I feel like I've got momentum or something and want to keep it going.

Everyone has been talking about their painting goals for the year which has gotten me thinking about it.

I don't think the 365 models/year is a good goal for me. I paint hella slow.

I think I might start with a goal of 2 per week and if I seem to be meeting that, I'll bump it up to 3 or 4.

I'm pretty sure I can get to 3 or 4 if I manage my time right, even once school starts back in.

My boss at the FLGS gave me a Khador battle box to get painted up. I think we're going to try and start a Warmachine league in the coming months. I don't know how to play but I think the models look pretty cool.

I'm a little bummed that I didn't get my Skarsnik and Gobbla models done before the years end. I didn't take into consideration having to help the shop with year end inventory.

That's ok, I'll get it done this month.

I'm chomping at the bit to get painting but I'm not sure I'llhave time before Monday.

I'm going to try and squeeze in some time tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.

Happy New Year everyone!

Well just remember two per week is still 104 models, and it jumps by 52 more for each per week you add I sincerely doubt I'll be able to manage the 7/week I'm supposedly planning to do... but I'm still gonna give it a shot

Eyeamrai's Blog of Many Things ~ 18 November - Still around @ 2015/01/02 05:32:42

7 per week just seems like so much!

I might have enough time to do that many but it starts feeling stressful and then I don't want to paint at all.

I think I'd still be pleased with myself if I got to the end of the year and had 100 or more completed miniatures.

I'm gonna give it my best shot!

Same for me. I'm aiming big so I don't slack off during my productive period of the year (now). but I'm fairly happy with how many models I got painted last year and even falling far short of my goal will leave me even further along. Burnout is to be avoided, videogames are likely the key there

Grimdork - are you going to be able to stay productive with all those lovely X-wing models vying for your attention??

monkeytroll - I feel like 7 per year is more my speed. I painted a lot of Orcs & Goblins but since I haven't done their bases, they can't count as complete. My January numbers may end up a little inflated while I get those guys based so I can call them done. I'm okay with this.

ayoku - Thank you for the kind words. Building the walls was pretty fun. In addition to my painting goals, I want to build more terrain this year. I haven't thought of a specific goal for terrain building. Right now I'm thinking one piece per quarter but I feel like that might be too little. I don't want to commit to doing all the LoER contests because I don't want to force myself into having to do a theme if I'm not inspired by it.

I'm not sure if I'm going to get to paint much today. The wife is off work today so we're going to spend some time together and then I'm going to go flip cards at Friday Night Magic with some friends.

Ehh, they're in the garage. If they make their way back in here it will probably be for repaints or the occasional fact-finding skirmish If I can get some games in with them, it'll be worth the hit to my productivity IMO.

Hey carlos, thanks for wishing me luck!

Grimdork says my Knight models should only count as 1 model.

I guess that means I'll have to work on the bases for my gobbos and finish up my friend's skinks while I'm doing the Knight to give my self a shot at reaching my numbers.

0 of 2 models completed this week.

I think that 2 per week is more than acceptable turnover. Whatever happens you want to make sure that you do not see painting as a chore and also that you are happy with the quality of whatever you produce.

Good luck!

If the knight counts as 1 then maybe 2 a week is a little too much.

Might be worth separating it into squads. So a squad is worth the same as a knight for example. Then maybe do a squad a month or fought night.

Squads might be a good idea, though what I think I will do is just not have the knight as my only project going. When I finally finish it, I'll add it to that week's model count.

Good luck with it fella. I find doing a little bit while watching TV or waiting for dinner to cook in the oven is a good way to get a little bit done at a time. i have a portable paint station thing rather than a dedicated desk though so that might change things.

I second the portable paint whatsit, they can help quite a bit in certain circumstances.

Probably won't prevent the flu from messing up your progress though

I have on of the really old GW paint station things that I think my wife wishes were a little less portable because I have paint pots all over the house.

I think I'm going to try and limit myself to my office and one spot on the coffee table to so I can paint and watch tv. We'll see how that works out for me.

I'm feeling so much better today. First full day without a raging fever. I'm ready to be up and about DOING things but the wife requested that I spend one more day in bed. Since I've actually been asleep most of the day, she was probably right.

Tomorrow there will be paint.

It's a slippery slope moving temporary stations around the home - one day you'll leave a drying model on the sideboad. Next week a sageant tinds himself keeping lookout from the mantelpiece. Then a paintpot appears elsewhere.
The following week you realise you have three semi-permanent paiting areas, and assorted storage near all of them.

A slippery slope I tell you.

Monkeytroll I don't have models all over but paint pots are every where.

Our plan is to redo my office so it is more of a studio and then that will be my permanent hobby area. I'm hoping we get to it this year.

I keep it contained to a single mdf painting tray. If I get anything extra out like basing material or a spray can it goes back away once used.

Though using some models as look outs could be funny.

I can't believe another week has gone by without me painting again.

I know I can blame the flu this week but still...

I did do some hobby stuff today though. I got the Khador battleforce that my boss wants me to paint up all put together and ready for some primer.

I was using super glue and zip kicker to glue them together. For the first time in all my time using that combo, I got it on my fingers. Holy does that burn. OMG! I don't recommend it.

My plan for this upcoming week is to finish some goblins and get caught up on the paint count!

Paint and pics this week, I promise!!

0 of 2 miniatures painted this week.

Slow progress is slow.

I did get Skarsnik and Gobbla completed though!

I got the base for Zixit and his giant spider Grelynx completed as well. I've just been having a dickens of a time getting them to stay on the base.

That's all the painting I really got done over the weekend. It was a Magic prerelease weekend so I played all the Magics! I only lost one match over the course of three events - 4 if you count FNM - so I'm pleased with my results.

I've been working on the Khador group since Sunday evening. The red is absolutely kicking my butt. I do not approve of any of its streaky annoying-ness.

I'm going to keep working on them although as slow as they are coming along, I do not expect to finish them this week.

I've got at least one of my battles for the fantasy campaign this weekend. The one I know that I have is against Lizardmen and the one that I may have is against Dwarfs.

I've been thoroughly wrecked by both of these armies earlier in the campaign. I will give the battles my all! I need to dig out my giant, add a banner to one of my goblin champions to show that's now a Battle Standard bearer, and figure out where I decided to add the other 25pts into the army.

I'll probably do some base work throughout the army to get my completed model count for the month up as well.

I'll get some pics of the completed Skarsnik and Gobbla up today or tomorrow. Hopefully I will have figured out how to get Zixit and Grelynx on their base and will have some pics of them to show as well!!

If anyone heard maniacal laughter on the East coast earlier, that was probably me finally getting Zixit and Grelynx attached to their base! Yeah!!!

With Skarsnik and Gobbla also done, I have completed TWO whole models so far. I'm on a roll!!

I'm still on the losing end of the battle of the red paint with the Khador set. I may give them a break for a few days.

Anyway, pics!!

I'm still working on the Khador jacks. I haven't started on the chic yet. Sorcha maybe? I dunno...

I think more than having a problem with the reds, I'm still trying to get the paints thinned properly.

I feel like I do the same thing to prepare my paints but I skip the step between not thin enough and too thin about 8 times out of 10.

I'd appreciate any advice you guys can give me.

I just about have to airbrush red to get it to look right... I have trouble getting it thin but not too thin for larger surfaces like that too. Could you use red primer for those? Or is their off color white? That would kind of get you either way... meep.

Between planning, buying, building, painting, and playing, this hobby is pretty time intensive. If I get anything painted in a week, it's been a good week. Rejoice in any progress you make.

For painting big red models my system has evolved into spray painting a light white primer, followed by another spray painting of red, followed by painting the actual red I want on by hand.

P:robaly not a technique you want to use on Gobbos, but it workds nicely for big models, like Space Marine Tanks, and probably Warjacks.

Eyeamrai's Blog of Many Things ~ 18 November - Still around @ 2015/01/22 18:40:38

Post by: EyeamRai

Thanks Grimdork and adamsouza!

I didn't do a red primer because I didn't want to paint metals over the red. I went with a white primer followed by a dark tone wash.

If I end up painting more Khador jacks for the store, I'll probably do the red spray. I will still end up having the same problems with streaky paint going over it though.

With the goblins all the surfaces are so small that you can't really tell if it streaky and I'm also not going for pristine surfaces with anything in that army.

Even though the black orcs are bigger, I still wasn't going for nice clean surfaces or trying to blend or anything.

The jacks are my first attempt at blending. I guess I should give myself a bit of a break.

I'm aiming to finish painting the jacks and maybe get them based as well as start on Sorcha today. Hopefully she will be a little bit easier to paint since she's smaller.

We'll see how it goes!

I finished the two jacks.

I'm not 100% pleased with them but they're ok. You can see where I had a green stuff fail on Jack 1. But! two more models done! YAY!!

I'm almost done with Sorcha. I've just got some detail stuff left on her and my hands were starting to get a little shaky. I think I'll be able to finish her tomorrow.

Then I really need to work on my stuff for my battle on Sunday.

I started the little mooning goblin that I bought. The sculpt on that thing is pretty rough but I didn't spend too much money on him so I don't feel bad. He'll definitely bring the laughs.

I think your Reds technique is good. Thou in my experience ( and picking up stuff from others ) is start with a dark color. I use the GW brown red color. .can't remember what it's called as the pot I have is still from before all the name changes. Once dry try a ' earthshade' wash. Sepia can be used but I find that it's to light to put the contrasts I want.

After that go with your base red. Thin it down but not too much that it is transparent. Paint all but the edges and recesses. Once Dry another coat may be necessary depending on how deep you want the color. Next add a bit of orange to your red mix and thin as before. start with the raised highlights. Repete as necessary. You can continue to add layers with increasing amounts of orange to continue to highlight. This is the same technique I do for yellow, blue and green ( thou I use different color than orange obviously )

You don't need an airbrush in order to blend, just patience. Folks that I thought do red well.. Nerdfest, Eggroll, Meph..check them out!

Lastly .. I suggest a wash on the models prior to the main base color. I think your metals will look more defined if they had a wash. 2 cents.

Good luck.. and on Sunday’s battle as well!

Ayoku - Thanks for the kind words!

adamsouza - Custom battle damage, huh? I accept your description!!

Grimdork - Thanks for always keeping my company over here. I appreciate it!

Solar_lion - Thanks for the advice on the reds and the luck. I need all of it I can get!

I did not end up finishing Sorcha today. Spent the day hanging out with the wife and playing with our crazy dogs. It was a nice day.

Tomorrow I'll be working at the shop all day. Once I'm done there, I'll work on my fantasy stuff. I think the main thing I still need to do is get a Battle Standard bearer model worked out.

Then Sunday, I'll be back at the shop for my battle against the lizards.

That will push Sorcha to at least Monday but that's ok! With the jacks completed I have my two models done for the week!

adamsouza - The colors! I know! I'm pretty excited.

carlos13th - I think you're right, it's a good number of colors. The full 100+ range would be wasted but this seems like just enough.

I won't get to paint until Monday at the soonest. That such a long wait with these paints sitting here looking at me.

I have a bunch of colors in my 84 part minitaire set that I haven't used much. I may... someday. I probably should diversify a bit more... But yeah, just enough colors is a good thing. Especially with being able to mix up stuff in between in a pinch.

Could always take a look at some colour theory stuff and work out how you are going to use them while you wait.

I'm sure if I had an 84 set I wouldn't use all of them either. I have some GW colors that I haven't used very much.

My boss at the shop sold me a random box of Bones for $20. There were about 30 minis in the box. I'm going to paint those up in colors that I don't normally use. That should be pretty fun.

carlos13th - Good call on the color theory stuff! I will definitely do that. Thanks for the idea!

I just posted this sketch over on the current LoER blog.

It's my final sketch for the "what went wrong" competition.

I have a bunch of Sculpey clay that you have to bake and then a decent amount of another brand of air dry clay at the house so I'm going to try using clay.

I don't think it's going to turn out well but it will be a learning experience for sure!

I think the Easter Island style goblin head will be super cool if I can manage to make it.

Now to go image search those statues...

I finally got Sorcha done! I'm pleased with how she turned out.

My big battle got moved to Thursday. I dug out my giant and he's looking pretty rough. I started working on him ages ago lots of mold lines and such.

I'm not stripping him down just to deal with mold lines so I just finished painting him enough to call the project complete.

I have him glued down rocked back on one of his heels so he looks like he's about to fall over.

I think it looks pretty cool, especially since the giant is always in danger of falling over anyway.

If I do anything else with him, it will be to pin his foot to the base to help keep it from breaking off. I'll just wait for it to break off on it's own to do it.

I still haven't gotten all of my 1750pt list pulled out so I'll probably do that tonight as well as think about the final 2000pt list so I can see what needs to be done.

That's the hope. Draw fire with the giant on one flank and the warboss on gigantic spider and a small unit of spider riders going after the other flank.

That leaves the two units of night goblins and two units of black orcs to come up the middle.

That's the current plan. We are fighting over the center hex on the map. There's chaos-y magic stuff happening all around us, so we will see how this works out.

I've got my battle today.

It's 1750pts. Here's my list:

Lords:
Skarsnik and Gobbla

Night Goblin Great Shaman - lvl 3; Dispel Scroll, Ruby Ring of Ruin; Talisman of Preservation

Heroes:
Goblin Big Boss on Gigantic Spider - lt armor; shield; shortbow; Dragonhelm; Sword of Striking

Night Goblin Big Boss - Battle Standard Bearer; lt armor; enchanted shield

Night Goblin Shaman - lvl 2

Core:
Goblin Spider Riders x7 - Boss; shortbows; spears

Night Goblins x42 - Full Command; spears; fanatics x3

Night Goblins x20 - Musician; Standard Bearer; shortbows; fanatics x3

Special:
Black Orcs x10 - Boss; Standard Bearer

Black Orcs x10 - Boss; Standard Bearer

Rare:
Giant

I'll definitely take some pics. Hopefully I can get some decent ones.

Wish me luck! I'm going to need it. This guy is a WAY more experienced player than I am. Even if the random acts of chaos only effect him negatively and me positively, I'd still be at a disadvantage.

Should be fun either way!

That was a CRAZY battle.

I should have taken notes. I'll have to do that in the future so I can actually tell you all about what happened.

The board was pretty insane terrain-wise. Every single terrain piece was magical.

We had:
a river of light
a venom thicket
a wild wood
a wizard's tower
a temple of skulls
a blazing barricade
a sphinx house
a sorceress portal
a tower of blood
an anvil of vaul
and a magic circle

There was a convergence of chaos magic in the center area of the board. At the end of each turn, we rolled for each unit in the center area and some effect happened and then if the unit was still alive, you got victory points. So you wanted to be in the middle but it was dangerous. I got really lucky and actually rolled no effect for all of mine except 2. I got the rust effect so my saves for my spider riders got -1. One of my units was sucked into a hurrican and hurled 4d6 and a scatter dice. I rolled really low (7) and in the direction I was trying to go so it wasn't any big deal.

The Lizardmen had one guy in a unit turned into a chaos spawn, the spawn charged the unit it was in and won combat! It ran down one of it's own units and caused one unit to flee. I can't remember the other bad thing that happened to him.

The giant did his job. He kept a stegadon with skinks and a giant bow thingy on top from eating up my flank. He didn't manage to kill it though. On the final round when it had to auto flee from the charge, I only rolled a 3 so I didn't over run it and it managed to stay on the board. That actually cost me the game. It ended up as a draw in my favor.

I only got a few pics. I need to write TAKE PICS at the top of my cheat sheet so I can remember. It is always my intention but then I get all caught up in what's going on. With so many magical effects, there was always something going on during this game.

Carlos - I'm in the process of repainting the whole army in that brighter scheme. I'm glad you like it! That's 1750pts mostly painted and I have probably another 3000pts maybe more that need be either repainted or painted for the first time.

Squall - This is the first game I've played with the Giant. He was the main part of my upgrade when we moved to 1750pts. As we move to 2000pts I know I'm adding two spear chukkas but I haven't decided what else.

Monkeytroll - the giant vs stegadon is my favorite of the bunch too!!

Hey Gawdam! I really need to get cracking on them. I haven't done anything since I determined that I needed to start over using a framework under the clay.

I've distracted myself with starting to put some paint on the GW terrain piece called the Deathknell Watch or something like that. I primed it months ago and I had this idea that I wanted to put bright colors on it and then I would paint it up normally and the bright colors would show through in different spaces.

Yeah. I don't know what I was thinking.

Well, I was thinking that it would make it look magical and not like some mundane building.

Right now it is looking like quite a mess. I want to get a few more things blocked in and then do a wash. Once the wash is dried I'll decide whether or not I'm going to strip it down and start over.

I'll take some pics of it so you guys can see the mess that I have made. It probably won't be until Thursday though.

I really need to get myself in gear!!

I dug around and finally found some skewers so I can make the framework for the standing stones.

I cannot promise that I'm going to work on them today though. So. Cold.

Seems like a nice day to snuggle up with the wife.

I hope everyone is doing well.

I will get back to the grind soon.

I've been quiet but I've done a few things.

I've been working on one of the mini's that my boss at the shop gave me to paint up for display. It's some elf thing. I'm not totally happy with it but I don't want to strip it down and start over.

I took some pics of the tower that I went a little crazy with and the goblin "horn blower"

Sorry about the sideways pics. I'm not sure how that happened...

Eyeamrai's Blog of Many Things ~ 18 November - Still around @ 2015/02/22 17:35:08

I think the elf dude looks alright, yellow and purple can both be a bear without using an airbrush. I do like the colors together though.

Hornblower is red huh, please continue.

I also like the tower thing. Definitely looks like a crazy wizard tower/caught in the middle of a chaos wave or something.

I like him, have always been a fan of yellow and purple. The tower looks like it will be epic once it is finshed.

And how can you not know Devo, them and Neil Young were in a quite terrible film "Human Highway".

The local university colors are purple and gold and the mascot is a pirate. That's kind of what I was going for with the elf dude.

Thraxas, I did know Devo and Whip it. I do not know this "Human Highway" though sounds like I'm not missing much, huh?

I decided to work on my spear chukkas for the WHFB tournament this weekend.

The weather here is still a little suspect for priming outside so I decided to try some of the Folk Art multi-surface as a brush on primer.

The paint was really thick, I had to thin it a ton before I could use it.

After that it went on fine but brush priming is the devil!!!

I do not see how people do that on a regular basis.

I did not get nearly as much done as I would have like to because I was losing the will to live during the priming process.

Hopefully after a small break I'll feel up to getting back to it.

I'm going to poke around and see what you all are up to and let you inspire me to get back to work!

I have always brushed on my undercoats. Not really sure why, just get the biggest brush I can lay my hands on (within reason obviously) and off I go. Not sure why I have never adopted a spray can. Probably scared of my wife losing her remaining marbles when she finds me spraying inside the house (yes I would probably do that, its a long story).

May also be something to do with old dogs and newfangled tricks.

If my office space were appropriately set up, I would use spray cans in the house as well.

I'm sure I will once it does finally get set up I'm going to need quite the exhaust fan in there bc I'm going to do EVERYTHING!!

I don't think my wife will mind as long as I keep it confined to those four walls.

I got a little more painting done last night. Nothing pic worthy though, just got the red skin done on all of the two spear chukka teams.

Warboss - I had never brush primed before. I've touched up the primer layer with a brush but never done the whole thing. The weather is what drove me to try it. I hate weather...

adamsouza - I've never primed outside in super cold weather. Fortunately where I am, near the NC coast, it doesn't stay cold for too terribly long. I'm definitely going to back to spraying.

I know I'm hella behind schedule but I finally started working on the framework for my LoER entry.

I will start adding the clay this week.

Now that I have the framework, the standing stones should be pretty easy. I'll carve the symbols in before I bake them.

The head is going to be difficult. Once I get it covered in clay I may ask my mom for help. (She's an artist so it's not as weird as it sounds )

I also included a pic of the spear chukka crew.

I don't know why these few guys are foiling me so but I've working on them for a few days now and I think I still have a few days left in front of them.

I think it was the brush priming.

Grim, the head is just crumpled up aluminum foil.

I'll be putting the clay over it and hopefully the armature will have given it enough shape that I can carve mostly details in it and be done.

I've never done anything like this before so we shall see how it goes.

I should have tried to finish this last month. Grad school starts today and I can feel my time evaporating.

I'm not giving up though, I'm just going to try to be a little more mindful of my time so I can still work on all the things that I want to do.

So... Before my wife and I got married we talked about the fact that she wanted children and I didn't want children. She said it would be okay, that she would not resent me, that we should get married anyway.

Cut to last weekend when she said she wanted kids more than anything else and I'm... well... me, and she didn't think this relationship was going to work after all.

I did the only thing I could think of to do and tried to kill myself. That didn't work out. I spent the week in the hospital in the special "behavioral" ward.

Now I'm back. I'm going to throw myself into school and painting/modeling and just try to take it day by day.

As I work on things I'll post pictures but I probably wont be around on all the blogs as much as before.

Hope you're all doing well.

I'm a big fan of the sculpted gobbo head stone, it's pretty cool.

The standing stones just look a little off to me. They are thin and half of the are balanced on a corner. Magic spinning stones ?

Gawdam - thanks, man. Painting on them is slow but it is coming along.

adamsouza - I like how the goblin head came out too. Hopefully I will still like it after I've gotten more paint on it. The stones are a little thin. I would make them a little thicker if I were to do this project again. When it is all done there will be little snotlings playing on and around the stones, knocking them over, that's why a few of them are modeled with the tilt.

Here are my results for the LoER competition.

The theme was "What Went Wrong?!" it is supposed to be an accident in progress.

What went wrong here is a bunch of snotlings found these statues and started playing on them and they are in the process of falling over.

The goblins in my world have red skin so these were carved out of stones that have glowing red parts in them.

I was shaking my head in dissapointment, just this morning, when I realised that the scroll saw and airbrush I bought, before the holiday, are both still in their boxes, unused.

It's been too cold and rainy/snowy for me to want to mess with the airbrush, and I just haven't had any inspiration with what to do with the scroll saw.

Thraxas - I am making it day by day. I'm keeping myself as busy as possible. That's about all I can do. Thanks for asking.

I told my friends that the next army I painted up will be designed after the anime RWBY. The main girl is black and red. Then her teammates are black and white, white and blue, and yellow and brown.

The solitaire and the vehicles will be black and red. I'm going to do a shadowseer, a death jester, and a troupe master in the colors of each teammate. Then the troupes will be mostly the same with some slight marking to show which team leader goes where.

I'm considering doing a unified mask color across the entire army but I haven't figured that out yet.

Thanks Archer! Stay strong and keep on track! You have your own pretty big undertaking with all the armies.

I was mostly pleased with the result of the idols. I am going to have to go back and pin the stones to the bases because they keep falling off. Hopefully the pinning plus some hot glue will keep them in place.

I'm looking forward to playing a game with them spread across the board.

I've been looking at lots of pictures of jungle ruins since I decided that is what I was going to try. This is going to be an interesting project.

I'm going to need a fair amount of extra bricks. Any ideas for bricks?

The project will be too heavy if I sculpt them. I guess some kind of foam. Has anyone tried those craft bricks you can get at the arts and crafts stores?

what size bricks are you looking for? if you want to keep them as bricks scaled to 28mm figs, you could try cutting bits of sprue, or balsa wood. bigger blocks can be made with foam--insulation foam scrounged from a construction site dumpster works wonders--I got the equivalent of more than four 4' x 8' sheets one day at work.

I'm not sure what size bricks yet, Gawdam. I think I'll need bigger than sprue. I need to start the project and see.

It's been a while but I'm still here.

April managed to get by me without me having a SINGLE mini

I knew it was getting close and I was entered in Paradigm's competition even! In my defense I had the flu and then out of the blue a mini stroke with ended up with me spending a few days in the hospital getting every type of scan and exam done on my head and chest.

It's been quite the scare but they can find no lasting damage and I can read and write again so that's all good news.

In other good news my wife is making noises like she wants to work things out. I'm really happy about that. We're going to do some couples therapy but after the nearly 2 months off-ish that we've had, I'm totally all for it. I'm all for us getting on the same page just in general to get and keep the relationship going. Fortunately my wife is very supportive of my gaming habits so I don't think that'll be nixed by us getting back together. I know lots of people where that isn't the case and I'm grateful.

I got a starter box of Relic Knights. I don't know which one but the local Ninja guy is supposed to come and demo the game next week, Tuesday, so I want to have them at least together and primed for the demo. The models look neat. This is my first attempt at building models out of this particular hard plastic material. It is not an easy go of it. Have any of you worked with this stuff?

My Goblins are still on my work table as are the two harlequins and a few other things... Hmmm, just realized that I need to update my original post with the all the things I'm fiddling with now-a-days.

Anyway! If any of you are still here and reading this - HI! I hope you are well. I still live here.

well...after i read your post through from top to bottom i have to say... thanks for still being with US....you sir have a tendency to frighten me...man... a stroke or a two month relationship breakup/pause i would need like a new hole in my head...
or to put it in another way: good to see you up and about nevertheless what hardships got tossed in your way!!!

gotta ask tho... how old are you? and you both don´t have kids, right? i´d die if i was away from my kids...(my youngest son was on a school trip for five days and i was not myself anymore...)

well... in the terms to be positive of the future... good luck to the both of you and i look forward to see some at least primed stuff here

i cross my fingers mate!

cheers, vik

Sounds like you have been on a bumpy ride, good to see things are looking better.

On the Relic Knights front I've painted quite a few of the Shattered Sword faction, must say the minis are the worst I've ever seen. On the plus side the game is supposed to be really fun. I just need to pick up a second faction. Oh and use super glue to put them together with.

The bigger models are supposed to be ok but I dont have any of those.

Glad you are still kicking around the block. Keep fighting the good fight and things will turn around eventually.

I unfortunately have no experience with hard plastic, although I would like to see some of the models if you have time to post a couple of pictures.

Vik - I've felt like I've had an extra hole in my head half this time! I'm 39 and she is 30. Neither of us have children other than the furry kind. Even though she broke up with me, she never moved out of the house just into a guest bedroom. It's been a wild time.

GiraffeX - thanks for coming along the ride! I still haven't looked to see what faction box I got. My boss gave it to me. It's the one with the Oni looking demons and the main one is a mostly naked chic? I think I'll like them them once I'm painting them but right now...

Archer - feel lucky that you haven't had to deal with that hard plastic. It's the devil. I'll post some pics of the models tomorrow. I'm supposed to be doing school work right now. Right because on top of all this I'm in graduate school as well.

I'm really feeling much better though. I can't wait to start painting the Relic Knights. I'll post an update with pics tomorrow, I promise.

Ah man, a mixture of bad (the stroke) and good news (positive moves with your wife). Good to hear that there was no lasting damage though, sounds like it was quite a shock.

It all puts the world of gaming and miniatures into perspective but your hobby and Dakka is always there if you need it.

I haven't forgotten about taking pics of the Relic Knights. My technology wasn't working well together (human error I'm sure )

I've enjoyed painting them so far. I still have more work to do on them as well as deciding what I'm going to do on their bases.

I got a chance to play the game this past Tuesday and really enjoyed it. It's different than any of the miniature games I've played before.

I'm hoping to get another game in this week.

Vik, Adam - Thanks! They've been pretty fun to paint.

They have just been put on the back burner as I have found out today that my shop is having a Kill Teams painting contest!

I didn't find out about it when it was first announced bc I was in the hospital and they have not been doing a good job of talking it up.

I'm going to build and paint a unit of Tyranid shrikes with lash whips and bone swords.

I have two weeks to get it done.

I'm not sure if my snail's pace is going to make it but I am going to give it a try!

I'm hoping to get them build tonight and then hit them with the primer fairly early tomorrow so I can be painting by tomorrow afternoon.

I got the new uberbrush that GW put out - the artificer. It's a nice brush. I wish they made one in a larger size as well. I guess I'll have to order one of the nice ones from Dick Blick or someplace where I can get a couple of sizes. I'm looking forward to it!

Those Beserkers are great models, well painted too. You have done great pairing the green, purple and red as well, I do not think I would have the guts to go that bold.

Any Harlequin progress yet?

Let us know how the new GW brushes are too.

The relic Knights models look really interesting and a little risqué. I like.

Good luck with the painting deadline. I always did like kill team size games.

Thanks Thraxas! I think I lean towards bold colors. My Orcs and Goblins all have bright red skin as well.

I only got the 1 GW brush, the artificer brush. I LOVE it. I've never painted with brush of that high quality before. It held it's point beautifully! I wish they made one in a bigger size.

I haven't worked on the Harlequins in a while, I still plan on finishing them though.

Archer, the main knight chic is definitely only wearing a ribbon with some sleeves...

I'm working on my Tyranid Warriors for the store's painting contest. I'm not sure I'm going to finish because I still don't have them built.

Ugh, so there's not a chance I'm going to finish my warriors before the end of the month.

I started painting one of my older ones just to see the paint scheme and I hate it.

I really like the orange carapace but I'm digging the green undersides. I'm not sure if I'm dumping in the stripper or if I'm going to work on it to see if I can get it to something that I like a little better.

I'm definitely bummed though.

I worked on the spear chukka bases some. I used puffy paint to interesting result. I'll post some pics once I paint edges - probably tomorrow.

Don't get down too much. Although it would have been great to make the painting goal sometimes in creative pursuits it's just not meant to be. Far better that you work out a scheme you are happy with and it will be far easier to paint the whole group than have to put up with a scheme you aren't happy with.

Eyeamrai's Blog of Many Things ~ 18 November - Still around @ 2015/05/24 07:28:02

Whenever my enthusiasm for painting or whatever, I try breaking it down, so instead of painting 5-6 models at a time, I just try one, or I move to something else for a time, or just generally do anything but that. I usually find myself crawling back to my desk to finish it, even if it does take me a year

I know how hard it can be to work out a scheme, see if this helps you: https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/

Thanks Carlos! The Relic Knight have been fun to paint. I'm considering getting another set just to paint them.

Archer, Yeah, I just have to work out a different scheme. According to color theory it should work together okay. I think I just need to find a different shade of green. I'm super happy with the orange though. Maybe I'll take a pic of the ugly test mini as well.

Thanks for the link OMN! I already had that one bookmarked specifically for my my tyranid project. I think I'm going to strip that guy down and try again.

I messed around and let it get to dark for pictures today. I'll try again tomorrow.

I don't know what I want to paint right now. I need finish the Relic Knight and the harlequins but they aren't calling me right now. Maybe I'll see what goblin stuff needs to be worked on.

I should probably just do my school work and then see if there is still time in the day to paint.

TP - Nice to have you over here!

I have not been making progress lately. School has got me completely bogged down. So much reading!!!!

I did find a bunch of orc boyz that I had stripped down. I think I'm going to prime them up and maybe work on them.

I can't remember what the final list for my fully painted 2000 points of orcs and goblins looked like. I don't think I was running boyz to be honest...

I want to get them done so I can have a fully painted army for once.

If I can remember where I was going with my final list that is what I'll paint, otherwise I'll paint the orc boyz so I don't lose all momentum.

After working on my Tyranid warriors for a bit, I can tell that the bugs are on the back burner. I think the harlequins might be too.

I don't think I'm ready to face Sir Wyatt the Knight yet.

That only leaves me with a ton of half started projects but most likely orcs and goblins!

I just read through your progress on the OnG, and I wanted to say they look nifty. I agree that your neon green spider is shocking and terrifying, and the little guy with the big hat looks nifty to my eye. I can't wait to see him painted!

I had a lot of trouble taking photos as well, so I ended up backing this kickstarter. It should be easily replicable, all you need is white all around and some sort of indirect lighting (i.e., not shining directly on the mini).

Thanks for coming by Josh!

I will have to see if I can get something like that Foldio for my pics. It looks perfect for my needs.

I'll have some more orcs to show soon. I just got the red skin painted on a few guys today.

You probably don't need to buy a special photo booth. Just build a box from white foamcore or card, aim a light or two at the sides or top instead of directly at the minis and that should work well enough.

I have a couple of different plans on how to build a light box saved on my computer. I guess I could just look at those.

I got the Standscan light box thing. I do not know how to use it correctly. So far my pictures are just brighter. I'll have to figure out how to use it.

Anyway, a random pic of the goblins from t he spear chukka team. These are the ones I used puffy paint for their bases.

The puffy paint isnt fancy but it is fast and I have about a million goblin bases to take care of to count the models as complete.

My night goblins are supposed to be mining gold so I will use brown or green and then the glittery gold puffy I paint.

Archer, I have 2000pts of red skinned orcs and goblins! I wanted to do something different. I have enough unpainted models that I could probably do a whole separate army painted the appropriate green 2000pts or larger. I'm gonna do do them all red though!

I haven't done an army shot before, have I?

I'll have to do that, perhaps this week I'll have the time the pull all the guys out and give them a photo shoot. Maybe I'll even take them over to the shop and photo the army on one of the table with terrain and stuff!

(I'm not promising that...)

The guys have been trying to get me back into 40K. I haven't wanted to paint my Tyranids yet and the harlequins aren't speaking to me either even though I really like them. I think however, the new Cult Mechanicus stuff has gotten my attention. I can play my Knight with them as well... I picked up the codex today so we shall see...
