Imperial Fists Legion and a bit of Sisters of Battle, Salamanders and others @ 2015/09/15 23:21:29

Post by: teban

Hello Guys,

I wanted to share my WIP projects for my 7th Legion

A few things to note:

I noticed too late that my primer application wasnt great, thus, i got grainy looking marines. I'll use this to my advantage: once i finish them I will apply weathering powders and they should look awesome.

Ive been using FW's new airbrush paints: Phalanx Yellow and Sigismund Yellow. I apply them with brush and airbrush respectively.

For yellow I've been using averland sunset (base) or demonic yellow (air can fromm army painter); then I use a thinned down wash made of agrax, sepia and 'ardcoat.
After that, I Layer with Phalanx Yellow, highlight with dorn yellow and then apply a layer with sigismund yellow. Finally, i highlight again with dorn yellow (this creates a 2-tone highlight).

I will post pictures of my progress. Cheers!

I'm just getting back into my Imperial Fists after a long break. This should be some good inspiration. I have to ask; what's with the glass jar storage?

Looking forward to more

I expect it's to keep dust off of the miniatures while they're not actively being painted. Pretty good idea if I may say so. Especially if each jar is for a specific kind of model or squad (Bolter marines in one, special weapons in another, heavy weapons in another, etc.)

Just a guess.

Take it easy for now.

Ah, the glass jars. I found them at my grocery store and thought they'd be nice for storing bits... and then I realized they can hold marines in less horizontal space.

I use them to avoid dust, and pretty much what Red__Thirst said

I shall be posting an update tonite!

As Promised, i have some advancements on my infantry: I applied highlights (Dorn yellow), followed by Sigismund Yellow (cwutididther) using GWs paint gun. Then I applied a matte varnish. The following steps will include a thinner Dorn yellow high light (the 2-tone i mentioned in the first post). Then I will do the blacks and other colors.

Cheers!

-----

Things i've learned: I will no longer build-then-paint. Its a pain in the to paint they way I like.

Primer is very important - if not well applied, it will lead to lots of issues down the road.

Expect to see better work in the following infantry models

Looking snazzy! Love the older marks of armor (Horus Heresy models are always awesome).

They're a little brighter than I'm accustomed to seeing, but that's not a bad thing. I look forward to seeing more progress! Love that squad Sergeant's pose also. Very cool power sword too I'll mention.

What kind of basing are you planning on doing? Just curious on that end.

Looking forward to more updates. Take it easy for now.

I'll use astrogranite basing from GW and i will dry brush with longbeard grey. I will add some small rocks in there as well. I want them to look like they're fighting between destroyed concrete.

Other marines will have more detail in their bases as well

They will look something like my other terminators:

I like the squad! Well done and great work on the yellow. I like the subtle weathering effects you've pulled off, as well as your basing. It's basic, but that's not a bad thing, as it sets the yellow off nicely with the dark pallet you've chosen to use. Overall a very nice unit. One quick question, black shoulder pad rims = 5th Battle Company? Just curious.

I'm trying to do a similar 'battlefield grime' effect on my Blood Angels as well. Hopefully I can pull it off.

Looking forward to seeing your vindicator completed! keep up the great work so far.

Take it easy.

These guys are my legionaries and well, 5th company too when they see the lands of the future :p (40k). In the future, there is only War!

The basing is simple as you say, but theres more to it than it seems. The light is not the best and it cant show it as is . Here, i took some more pics for you to see

I will certainly have some units in pristine armor and some others with weathering. Some have seen the artificer more recently than others in my fluffy-filled-head !

Some more shots and work that needs to be done.. sometime in the near future. I hope.

Not the templars mate, they wear black armour due to their company and rank as veterans. Black is common among veterans in the imperial fists as well

I'd say were at the 90% mark!

Highlights on black, a few drybrushes here and there for a couple bases, white dots on red visors and slight weathering around some corners.

That's about 5 hours of work for me!

Gorgeous! Love the yellow and especially love the pops of green mixed in there man! Very clean (As in cleanly painted!) and slick looking squad. Nice basing too!

Also, I like how you've tinted the blades of the swords that kind of almost bronze shade. Nice effect and looks sharp on there with the yellow to set that color off.

Can't wait to see more of your army. Keep up the great work!

Hello guys!

I've started working on my Legion again!

Here are some upcoming works!

5-man heavy weapon squad (Missile Launchers) in MkII armor.

Imperial Fists Chapter Champion (command squad. Sigismund Jr)

The other guy is a sargeant a friend of mine asked me to build to have him painted.

I still have lots of stuff to work on. My Templars are still 95% done, and I hope to finish them by the end of the month along with these guys. The Tank is coming in slowly.

Love the forward progress! Your Champ looks awesome an dI love the pose on him, as well as the basing!

The only critique I'll offer for the Champion is perhaps add some brown washes to the upper leg/thigh areas and forearm armor detail. I can see there's some amazing filigree work in there on the armor but the gold (Very nice gold by the way!) is kind of washed out on the yellow back ground. Having a shade in there to help define it and make it pop would help folks see it more easily. It's such a cool part of the model, I want you to show it off more.

The basing, posing and the painting especially are all brilliant though. Well done once again and I can't wait to see the missile launcher marines finished up.

Take it easy and keep updating!

Very nice addition! These are looking snazzy, and I like that they have the predominantly gunmetal shade armor, nice way to distinguish them from their tactical marine brethren.

Your yellows are extremely crisp and nicely vibrant as well, keep up the great work man! I'm currently about to start working on a Tactical Marine Sergeant, as well as several more Death Company models as well, so seeing this forward progress helps keep me motivated to move forward.

Hope to see more progress from you soon. Keep at it and take it easy for now.

Hello guys!

Its been a long time since my last post. Here's a WIP for my 5-man heavy bolter squad in MK3.

ToDo:

- Highlights on black
- Faceplates on other legionaries
- backpacks (with highlights on all of them)
- bases
- Washing metalics with nuln oil, highlighting them

I consider these guys at 80%. A 10-man tactical squad (also usable as a seeker/veteran squad) is on the way and should be finished before the end of the month.

After that, I might continue a dreadnaught and some Phalanx Warders !

I still have that vindicator sitting on my desk. I really should continue that piece... Cheers!

WIP for my Dread. This one turned a little darker than I had hoped for, Its also a bit dirtier than I hoped so I will carry on with weathering

Weapons will be painted up when I get the other 2 dreads up and painted to this same stage. 10 marines are now on the way (That will be used as either veterans, seeker squads or regular tacticals)

As for the cabin on the big project, that will be worked on in parallel.

Cheers!

Wow, I like all that Forge World love

Nice concept on the bases. I think that grey bases go really well with Imperial Fists, too. You might get a bit more mileage with the bases if you drybrush them with either Tyrant Skull or Pallid Wych Flesh. It gives you a little more contrast there.

It's a little hard to see because of the dark photography, but are the metallic bits on the missile launcher guys highlighted? If not, a light drybrush of Necron Compound is a good way to get a bunch of mileage without doing very much work. If you've never done it before, though, I'd test on an old model that you prime black, base leadbelcher, wash, and drybrush Necron Compound, first -- just to make sure you don't go overboard. You don't need very much at all, and the effect is very pleasing.

I really like that vindicator too! Look forward to seeing more

Imperial Fists Legion and a bit of Sisters of Battle, Salamanders and others @ 2016/01/19 00:06:46

Post by: teban

For the grey bases I actually used longbeard grey (dry compound) - the heavy bolters have the highest contrast of all, but you did point out something there: Pictures are dark.

I will take pictures in broad daylight when I'm done with the tacticals and put them up again - hopefully that will show the contrast

As for metallics, I have used necron compound but its rather.. hard to use it. Its like a thick, dry paste with water on it - So i tend to use the next silver: ironbreaker (i believe its the same color) after I wash with nuln oil.

That Vindicator is slow on its tracks because I'm getting ready for a game @MWG (and I'm only bringing infantry and walkers)

Thanks again for taking your time for the C&C; After I take the pictures in clear daylight or better lighning, I shall take my decision on the drybrushing (tyrant skull/pallid wych flesh vs longbeard grey)

Imperial Fists Legion and a bit of Sisters of Battle, Salamanders and others @ 2016/01/19 00:42:17

Post by: Talys

Hmmmm. Necron compound should be EXACTLY the same consistency as longbeard grey. if it's not, you should take it to a GW store and swap it. It actually works in exactly the same way.

It should be dead simple, idiot-proof to use. Put a little on brush, work most of it off onto a paper town, and then use fast back-and-forth motion on silver area using a stiff, coarse brush (like GW drybrush), and instant talent

Necron Compound is doubly easy to use compared with other dry paints because its adhesion is so good; just contact the raised area of model with the lightest touch, and you have highlight.

Imperial Fists Legion and a bit of Sisters of Battle, Salamanders and others @ 2016/01/19 00:51:16

Then I have some pretty bad necron compound paints :( I will take a couple of screenshots and post them tonite. It's always been a pain to use it. No wonder why...

@Teban - hey, that dreadnought looks awesome so far!

What's wrong with the necron compound? That looks like all of the dry compounds, and exactly like mine (more or less). You should be able to put a drybrush into some of it, then wipe almost all of it off on a napkin. Wth a very light back-and-forth motion -- barely touching the model -- catch all the raised edges of the model and/or add some texture.

If you check out some of my terrain pieces that I photographed --

http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-89259-44225_Terrain.html

I extensively drybrush necron compound; in fact, I think every model I photographed there uses it.

Looking really good once again Teban!

I'm envious of the speed at which you can churn a squad out. The way I'm painting takes *FOREVER* to finish a five man squad off. Part of that is due to the fact that I am working two jobs at present, so free time is at a premium. Still, all things considered it could be worse. Some time to paint is better than none, after all.

Can't wait to see this squad finished up. Keep up the great work!

Looking snazzy as always! Loving the touches of green mixed in with the yellow and gunmetal/black. Nice pop of color on them.

I'm doing something similar with my Blood Angels, only I decided to use purple (Purity seals) and just the tiniest splashes of green (eye lenses) to help bring some extra color to the army.

Hello guys!

This is a long term WIP . I will be working on it during the next 4-5 months .

Right now im working on the inside areas first, I will keep dry fitting until I manage to put it together. What do you guys think of putting LEDs in it? (for the cabin and the assault ramp room)

Coming up this march and April: The First Captain of the Imperial Fists, the Emperor's Champion: Sigismund!

Also, I will start working in 20-30 Phalanx warders!

EDIT: Sigismund has just been cleaned. He is getting ready for priming . He has to be done before the end of march due to the unofficial painting challenge held by Paradigm. I hope you guys enjoy the progress of this beast

Thank you!

There will be more to come this week .

I shall update this blog (thanks to whoever moved this thread ) frequently

Do you think I should include other WIPs (such as SoB or non-IF marines in here)? Or should I create a new thread for them?

Cheers!

Love it as always. Your yellows are so bright and clean, with perfect highlights.

Can't wait to see your take on the Iron Hand and Blood Angel. I'm very curious to see how your style translates to the black armor of the Iron Hand and the red of the Blood Angel.

Looking forward to seeing more soon, keep churning them out! I only wish I could paint to the quality you do at the volume you can. I'm lucky to finish 2 or 3 minis in a month at my current pace.

Take it easy for now.

Hello!

Thank you for the kind words guys .

These are the 7 dudes that are left for this first unit and also some progress on the Iron Hand guy (The guy in the middle. The other 2 I did before this guy a few months ago, for the same friend)

These Iron Hands are meant to represent veteran warriors (in 40k) or legionaries (30k)

Cheers !

Small update: Already finished the yellow layers. Moving onto other base colours: Black goes first.

These guys should be finished in about 15-20 days from today. I need to get them finished to get a dreadnaught fully kitted out (arms still not painted) and to carry on with other smaller projects, such as that Iron Hand, some Thunderhawk work, 4 volcanic bases and set up of Polux.

After that.. I'm on the fence with continuing work on 10 tacticals (with a mix of chainswords and bolters, basically +ccw), 10 templars or 10 warders. Any ideas?

And of course, I've got a challenge to honour with Red . This saturday we begin our Captains.

Cheers!

Current progress on Lemartes:

Work starting on the arms now. I've got to paint them up, attach them, and then knock the jump pack out to finish the Chaplain of legend off.

Looking forward to seeing your Captain's progress and awesome work so far with the Iron Hands too!

Hey Guys

We finished this challenge (more pictures are on Red's thread!)

I've finally come back to my Warders - I will be uploading pictures of their WIP tomorrow though!

I've made a count of marines that need some love and the count is high:

Command Squad(s)/retinues for Dorn and Sigismund
- 12 Marines. This includes 5 of them that are mixed using Black Templar Bits, 30k Bits, Imperial Fist Bits. 1 of them shall carry a banner!

Tacticals (MK3)
- 15 Marines. Equipped with CCWs as well to mix them in my squads. That will represent my squad actually having (or not) paid for them.

Phalanx Warders
- 21 Marines. Some power axes here and there, Breacher charges and some special weapons. Perhaps even a power sword for the quick draw.

Templars
- 10 Marines. 5 of them will be painted to the top of my possible standard for competition.

Cataphractii Terminators
- 6 Marines. Captain is included in here

Contemptor Dreads
- 3 Contemptor Dreads. 2 of them are IF ones

Tactical Support Squads (MK4)
- 20 Marines. 9 Meltas (maybe even 10, if i can get the 10th), 10 flamers

Heavy support Squads (MK4)
- 10 Marines. 5 Missile Launchers, 5 Heavy bolters. These dudes will bring my squads to 10 and 10

Vindicator, Rhino, 3 Drop Pods

... And a Frigging Thunderhawk.

Yes, It's a long list that I hope I can manage to get done before the end of the year, at least 90% of it. I need more Breachers and Dreadnaughts (Leviathan, deredeo) in my army. And Dorn!

I've considered buying a couple of forts, zone mortalis and more terrain to create 3 gaming tables in total. All of these will come with time (and money)

The end goal? To Have a worthy Legion! The 7th, the greatest!

Aaaand finally, some pictures of my competition with Red. Enjoy!

Hey guys, whats up?

I've been working a lot on these dudes (7 warders) And I've just entered a local challenge: Painting up a mostly-yellow miniature. Thus, I've been delaying my work because I've been preparing 5 tacticals (with ccw's!) for this challenge . Also, I'm working on building my contemptor Dread for my challenge with Red .

My Warders need some base colours (Metallics, some black on some insignia, highlights on greens, blacks, yellows and their bases. I'd say they are 60% done. It should take 10 more days to finish

EDC, Lipsdapips, would you guys like to enter our mini challenges?

Cheers!

EDC

Imperial Fists Legion and a bit of Sisters of Battle, Salamanders and others @ 2016/07/01 16:15:43

Post by: teban

Hey EDC,

That pillar came from dragonforge: http://dragonforge.com/Painting%20service/for%20sale/base_sets/sci-fi/sanctuary.htm

Its the first kit of the diorama sets

Edit----

I've made some progress for my challenge with Red, lots of work still pending. From washes to silver areas, highlights, some base colours and even the base itself. I need to start painting up its weapons too!

With not more to say about it, here's some pictures

I know that my yellows are not the same - main differences between them are the following:

The dread to the left is using Averland Sunset as the base colour, while the one in them middle is using Demonic yellow (army painter spray can). The legionary is using demonic yelloe as well, but he has had a wash on top of him too. I've decided to apply wash on the dreadnaught a bit differently, instead of applying on top of the whole model, I applied only to the crevices and joints.

Cheers

I'm thinking of magnetizing. But it will have a chainfist. He will be the tank hunter . I've considered adding a claw to kill infantry as well, but im unsure.

I'll put a melta inside the chainfist (or perhaps the graviton cannon?) and a plasmagun.

i have assault cannons too, and one of them goes on the dude on the left, along with a regular fist fitted with a heavy flamer or grarviton cannon too.

thoughts?

Imperial Fists Legion and a bit of Sisters of Battle, Salamanders and others @ 2016/07/08 21:19:52

Post by: teban

Aaaaand pretty much done. I need to do some highlights on the shoulders, paint and fix the under-arm bits and its good to go. Arms have been magnetized. The chainfist is sporting a graviton gun and the claw a plasma blaster .

Also finishing another set of weapons for another dread that's been sitting (and waiting) for them for a while now. Finishing that off, I should continue working on 4 more tacticals that are half-way though and the7 warders that I've been putting off for ages (highlights and bases for them!)

Cheers and enjoy

That's a very deadly looking dread full of claws and saws. The yellow is fantastic. Does this mean you won Dread Bowl 2016 against Red Thirst? Also loved the previous Blood Angel Captain earlier in your thread.

Imperial Fists Legion and a bit of Sisters of Battle, Salamanders and others @ 2016/07/18 16:26:29

Post by: teban

Thank you! I love the claws .

My yellow keeps improving with every new miniature and I'm getting an airbrush soon too .

Yes, I won the DreadBowl, But Red is coming up to speed! I hope he's able to finish by the end of the week. I want to challenge him on a Drop pod next . I want to retouch a few things on my dreadnaughts though.

The blood Angel is getting a few touch-ups! I will include brighter highlights.

I was in Vegas last week and played with a fellow bloke. Imerial Fists vs Iron Warriors (infrantry only). I lost. He had 40 missile launcher shots and I had tons of power armour. I couldnt reach him with my tacticals or breachers.
He played perturabo and a 4-man iron circle as his retinue. I managed to kill them with a unit of SS/TH terminators, sigismund, polux, 10 templars and the 2 dreadnaughts on top of this.... But nto before he got 3 shots out of his precision orbital bombardment that killed like 6 templars and polux before they even got in CC. Survivors: 2 dreads, 2 templars, 2 terminators. Sigismund only managed to get a single wound on him (I got charged!). He was then blinded and couldnt hold against perturabo.

Either way, super fun game. I loved it!

Every now and then (often ) I get side tracked with other projects. Wether its just starting them or finishing them is not really important.

I finally based 2 Sisters of battle, Celestine and Jeshka (my canoness' name).
Looking at my own pictures, ive noticed that i can make the cherub's wings better. That'll happen sometime in the future.

Please keep in mind I painted these miniatures a year ago and that I consider my painting skills to be a bit better

I've also started painting up the interior of my thunderhawk as my main project for now, leaving aside the 7 mythical warders and 4 tacticals.

Thanks man!

I've just finished a few more miniatures

Finally finished the 5 tacticals and 11 Phalanx Warders. More to come soon!

I've also been painting a Seraphim for a friend. I've used a very different technique this time!

She's ma inly painted using FW paints:

Black Armour:

Primed with Chaos Black
Based with Iron Hands Steel (silver)
Layered (about 7-8 layers!) with Deathshroud Clear

There are no artificial highlights! It shines on its own . I've painted a few silver 'edges' and I think it looks amazing.

The sword was done using Stormhost Silver as the base and then I Layered Angron Red (closer to the hilt), Pyroclast Orange and finally Sigismund Yellow. Every layer of that covered a bit of the previous colour. Finally, the tip was highlighted with more stormhost silver.

Enjoy!

I've started a big push for lots of miniatures (around 50) in a batch. I have a goal of 35 miniatures finished by the end of the year... and the Sisters of battle are coming soon. I must hurry!

The promethium Pipes are pretty much on hold for the time being but I will continue working on them soon - The Sisters will need them (I have 2 sets!)

The Templars will be the first to reach completition. With these 10 i will have completed 20 of them.

Then, 10 more Tacticals and 11 guys for the command squad in between (lots of yellow there)

Once the tacticals are done, I will move onto 2 heavy squads (5 ML and 4 Heavy Bolters).

finally, I will continue with the 10 support squads with 5 meltas and 5 flamers.

Having said all of that, only 19 phalanx breachers and 5 terminators will be left in my backlog. Pray to the Emperor that I dont buy more miniatures for the time being... the Sisters are coming

I've promised SoB before, frankly I won't believe it until I'm holding them in my hand. So I'm not rushing my current projects, but I definitely appreciate and understand your enthusiasm!

I just bought a dozen sisters on ebay to go with the other dozen I have... of course, they teased sisters.

That's a lot of work done in a short time! Good for you!

Yep, pretty much what I've been doing lately to pump out as many marines as possible before the end of the year is upon us;

I'm getting some decals done in a bit and hopefully finish off all the black trims on the tactical's armour.

Also, I need to bring some stuff to speed (the support tacticals) so that will be done before the end of this week!

Hey Guys, some progress over here with some tacticals (10) - I've placed the decals and done moost of the base colours (yellow is pretty much done).

I hope to finish them by the end of this week to continue with other smaller sized projects (5 tactical meltas and some repentias!)

Cheers

Templars on the previous page are off the hook. I love the black and yellow.

New MKIII tacs are looking good so far.

Hi Guys,

Some progress here

I've started some 10 tactical support marines to be finished along this 10 regular tacticals.

Missing on the last 10: Metallic highlights, bolter highlights, bases and some details on the Sgt.

Tactical support marines (5 meltas, 5 flamers):

Heads, highlights in general... etc. Should be able to finish by sunday with these 20 guys.

Bases will be developed after I do some repentias and penitent engines! Gotta hurry before GW catches up with me .

That being said, I will have 3 heavy bolters pending, 5 missile launchers, 19 Phalanx warders, a Land Raider, Rhino, Vindicator and a Thunderhawk left for my Imperial Fists. I'm not counting the Prospero burns box yet. That will be unboxed some time next year!

Cheers!

Hey Guys!

I've been rather busy but I've completed a few things!

A Land Raider (Achilles)
3 Goff Rockers
10 Tactical Support Marines (5 Melta, 5 Flamer)
10 Tacticals

Coming up next is 3 more of those Orks (xmas present for a friend) and some repentia. Should January arrive before I finish the repentia, I will start the Phalanx warders I've got pending. A few more marines to go to finish my backlog... and then some Prospero Burns and Sisters of Battle (I Really hope they produce plastic miniatures... after May)
Please enjoy
