 It was actually an extremely common practice to camouflage the tops of military aircraft, especially in the pre-jet era. If you are flying above the aircraft it blends in somewhat well with the ground. For the opposite reason a lot of military planes had white or blue bellies, so from the ground they blend in easier with the sky. Plus in this case it looks pretty cool to boot! |
