These pages are meant to give you an overview as to what rulebooks are the "current" ones for Warhammer 40,000. This might be a bit surprising for beginners and may merit an explanation: Games Workshop does not produce new codices every time they print a new main rule book (also called the "big red book" or BRB, although it hasn't had much red on the cover for quite a while), so codices from one or two editions before the current revision of the BRB might still be the ones used for gaming.

Obsolete Rule Books
The following rule books were used at one time and did contain army lists. They never have been replaced with a newer one and are currently not used in official GW games:
- Codex: Armageddon (2000 Campaign book containing Black Templars, Salamanders, Speed Freeks, Steel Legion)
- Codex: Assassins (Split into Codex: Daemonhunters and Codex: Witch Hunters)
- Codex: Eye of Terror (2003 Campaign book for the 13th Black Crusade containing Cadian Shock Troopers, The Lost and the Damned, Space Wolves 13th Company and Ulthwe Strike Force)
- Codex: Sisters of Battle (merged into Codex: Witch Hunters)
