Welcome to Third -=]_=- sponsored Terrain Competition!
Unlike in the previous contests, you won't be required to use a specific material like lids or cookie containers....
This time, the theme is FIGHTIN' PIT! ...or the like!
Your terrain piece must be a place or building specifically designed for holding fights there! It may be something like an ancient arena where Space Marines carry out ritual duels, an Imperial Guard training and sparring field, an evil-looking, sadistic torturing device by the Dark Eldar, a grimdark chaos arena decorated with a large number of chaos icons, or the smelly pit where da boyz brawl and wrestle..... be creative!!
- You can either leave the pit empty or build combatants, your choice
- It must be painted
- All Dakka registered users can enter!
- The deadline is November 3rd (prev oct 15), 2012 - On the 4th I will judge the winner, who will
--- then be allowed to set his or her own guidelines for the next copmetition
--- recieve a lovingly converted and painted Ork infantry model or small vehicle of choice (or maybe even something non ork related, but bear in mind that I am best at building Orks!)
--- and in addition, recive a surprise prize, which will only be revealed when he or she recieves it!
You can either post wip pictures every day or veil your work in secrecy until the deadline, your choice
Judges are not eligible to participate in the contest that they are judging...EVER. Judges set their own judging criteria on a per-competition basis. The Judge's decision is FINAL, feel free to Complain about it all you like, but know that it won't make any difference
With my exams in November and everything else in my schedule, plus the amount of projects that I want to get something done on, I think I may have to pass on this one and possibly the next.
Unless a quick and easy idea comes to mind that is
If I do or if I don't, good luck to all and look forward to seeing what comes about this time
actually childe the only fear i have is that if i scratch my head too much... my lil bit of hair i still got will get scratched away...
and i actually do have a nice idea already... tho why i would need it as a terrain for a table to play with is on a totally different sheat of paper ...
Welcome to the contest bruticus and max!
And I have to agree with Spartan.... Damn good work Bruticus, I love your gallery!
But distracting others is strictly forbidden lol
@Jackal: Welcome to the contest! Squigs pit you say? I really want to see that!
@Vik: Whats wrong with classic? Sure, compared to something scifi, it'll be a bit hard to build convincingly... you know, sice you don't have as much room for individual ideas, you have to replicate something that already exists.... but if you can pull that one off well, it'll look awesome!
might throw my hat into the ring this time. Only because i feared the last contest would make me gain weight and I'm working on these cool guys I can use as contenders:
Join us Meade! We had cookies, and we will now have arenas
question guys... would you put zombies in a fenced off area, or would you rather throw tyhem in an enclosed concrete pit. I'm thinking fences are strong enough to held the dead... but are they?
MauS wrote: Join us Meade! We had cookies, and we will now have arenas

fences will hold them in, as long as it's a not a swarm, they could have chains around their neck as well.
Only thing is you need something alive to fight them as they are not really interested in dead things.
Welcome, Maede! Don't you think a fight between those two guys would be little.... unfair? I mean, that guy in full body armor doesn't stand a chance against that knife wielding psycho lol!
And MauS.... fences are enough imo. But maede's got a point there, zombies won't fight each other.... but how about a pack of dogs or even a bear?
also, nice to hear you're giving it a shot, childe!
An arena... Maybe I should try my first terrain piece...? Maybe it should be a display case style diorama for my Aztec guy? Will it be a valid entry if there will be only a fraction but not the whole arena?
MrMerlin wrote: Welcome, Maede! Don't you think a fight between those two guys would be little.... unfair? I mean, that guy in full body armor doesn't stand a chance against that knife wielding psycho lol!
It is a chaos fighting pit... the fights can never be fair! Yes you read me like a book, the psycho with the knife will win He's just psycho enough to dodge the concrete on a pole.
Hello storag! Sure, you don't need to build a complete arena.... it just has to be recognizable as such. And don't worry about it being your first terrain piece.... the cookie factory I won with was only my third terrain piece, and that is only if you count the cardboard house and some scenic base I made before.... lol
Lol Meade, I'm very much looking forward to seeing wips on your arena!
And thanks Skalk! Sorry to hear you won't be joining...
Lol Meade, I'm very much looking forward to seeing wips on your arena!
I may make one with fence/divider sections that can double as an Aegis defense line, I do need functional terrain after all I hope functionality is not penalized
If you pull it off good, I bet nobody will notice it that the fences are removable.
btw, the trukk and the outhouse on my entry are also removable... the trukk is, well, a trukk, and the toilet is an objective marker!
MrMerlin wrote: If you pull it off good, I bet nobody will notice it that the fences are removable.

excellent I consider my toilet at home an objective marker as well.
for the fence discussion...that´s as classic as you can go with Z´s... so it would be a first choice for me... the fighting pit tho would look stunning nevertheless... and chucking dogs and suchlikes at the lurchers is a good idea... if you are of the nasty sort then some slaves would do well too...
I might just have to enter this one, but I have alot going on with school, but I do need a reason to get back into terrain building. I moved to Hong Kong, and had to leave all of mine in the states And because I had to leave my terrain, I also had to leave my equipment, so I will be starting from complete scratch. (other than my models, and a carpenters knife… )
Cheers to all the competitors!
PS I think that there should be a fight to the death in the winners pit, between the losers to see who gets second place
Hello sir william, nice to have you with us!
A fight to the death to see who gets the second place.... well, that'd be kinda pontless since second place gets ....nuthin'!
You'z gotta be da best ta win anyfink! Hurhurhur!
Gostflame.... you might lack the time and the bitz..... but definetely not the skills! If you can scratchbuild awesome models, you can also build terrain! lol
Oh I dunno dude, its a different ball-game...a Vet could have a go at Brain Surgery but ya know its not gonna turn out as well as a pro hehe...maybe some day I'll have a bash!
I started building a fighting pit but it sort of evolved into something different, I am not sure I will have an eligible entry but will see how it goes.
@vik: looking forward to the WIPs!!
@LDD: welcome mate! Btw, what do you mean "use it as a diorama later"....? You can enter the whole thing as a diorama or as a terrain piece, you choice @mars: Nice to have you here too! The original deadline is oct 15th, but if one or two entrants need another two or three days, I can extend it....
@bruticus: I know that problem! lol. But the range of things I'll accept is quite broad (you are supposed to be creative after all!) just try to make it look like some sort of fights are held there regularly !
Some wip's... the aegis defense line that will form the "Octagon".
Those will form the barriers to the pit, with the spikes and stuff facing inward towards the combatants. Next step is to mold a floor, and make a simple terrain piece I can fit everything into.
MrMerlin wrote: @mars: Nice to have you here too! The original deadline is oct 15th, but if one or two entrants need another two or three days, I can extend it....
The 15th of next month is doable, I think. The painting will be the tough part (for me). Getting excited about some ideas though. Can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with.
interesting concept so far... chaosy fighting pit i gather? i am eager awaiting the conestants then
The one contestant is the psycho with a knife in the first row He's painted up but the other guy wielding a pole with concrete on it is not finished yet.
...however... I did just receive a forgeworld ogryn in the mail, also wielding pole with concrete on it. ...hmmm....
and some of these other cultists could be audience members goading them on.
MrMerlin wrote: Wow Maede, that stuff is oozing grimdark character! I'm eager to see more wips from you!
Now, about that ogryn.... why not put him up against five or six of those "small 'uns"? Like a bear agains a pack of dogs lol!
thnx man. I'll get more done by next week probably.
Nah, I think the ogryn will just go against psycho . Unless I feel like making a chaos-crazed halfling contender. Not sure where to find the model tho, and don't know if I feel like sculpting him.

Firstly great paint job on your cultists Love the idea of a chaos halfling do that you must do that
I want to build some chaos ratlings trying to figure out the parts is a bit of a nightmare
can ratling succumb to chaos? i always assumed they are a bit like tau... aunable to fall for the darkness... (i see ratlings as LotR halflings with laserrifles really)
Viktor von Domm wrote: can ratling succumb to chaos? i always assumed they are a bit like tau... aunable to fall for the darkness... (i see ratlings as LotR halflings with laserrifles really)
They are abhumans, so yes. They are hobbits with lasguns, except for one crucial difference... they have beards. Whether this is a purposeful change on the part of GW or just a product of their ignorance will never be known. The Tau race just seems to lack psychic affinity, or chaos hasn't focused on them yet, who knows. they might have the same gene as human psychic blanks.
@Dirty Dog
I don't think I cud use the GW models without almost completely resculpting them. third party stuff is mostly little dudes in cloaks... I'd want one bare chested, pudgy and screaming with knife or other chaos implement in hand. For cultists you do do little ones with gasmasks and a pistol...maybe using ratlings bodies... might actually not be so hard.
Might get a gasmask head, or if the size fits maybe use a WGF stormtrooper helmet. And I will replace at least one knife, and the scabbards on his back, probably with some kind of backpack/airsupply or some such.
and you are set... would be a shame to replace that head...
looks like cool gasmasks, are they Forgeworld I guess? In any case yeah, his head is not chaos enough. I don't really like his ears and hair, and the features are a big oversized, but I'll wait to get it to see... in any case if I don't want to cut away the whole thing I can just scratchbuild stuff around the mouth or partially wrap his head up.
Have we finally found a challenger capable of defeating my pitslaves in the arena? I always liked Neil101's idea of having some sort of Dakka based pitfighting championship. I am going to have to get Abominus painted up sharpish so he can face this new ratling threat!
First progress, just so you guys know i'm still alive, and still in!
These pictures are definately work in progress, as so far I only have an arena. There will be a floor below this one with an illegal gambling den and a bar in it. (at least thats the plan so far)
Let me know what you guys think ey!
Shoot me, burn me, whatever... just don't be silent!!!!
now that looks already like a cool concept!!! the barbed wire fence pieces ontop of the walls... very cool... and doing it in a pentagram shape! cool... will it be a sandy floor or tiles there too? during my research i stumbled upon some similar ideas...
by the way... MrMerlin... are we supposed to do a terrain for a table or is a more diorama appoach also possible? the latter i am currently working at...
Diorama is okay too Vik...
The bottom of the pit will be sand or sawdust to easily clean up all then blood.
I'm not sure on the barb wire fencing yet... Maybe i'll use sprue to build a dome shape adorned with spikes a la Thunderdome. It'll happen as it happens...
The bar below will be the most work, but it will have to be done... A gambling den with a fighting pit, i can necro-pocalypse that i think...
the bar is the only thing i have yet to see... as i can´t imagine that myself atm...
tho the wirefence is good looking... i now wanna see that thunderdome... just for nostalgia^^
and you just gave me a nice idea for my own needs^^
Army-men fences indeed!
DArnit Vik... Now i will have to make a Thunder-Dome, just to see if it will work. The bar will come out fine i think... It'll be an abandoned one anyways as is all my terrain...
It will be the first building with a set interiour though... hrm... or perhaps it will be modular...
Choices choices... grmbl...
Vik that foundation is perfect, I love that shape! Are you going to make it diaramic and keep it semicircle, or make it more terrain and full circle that?
nope it will be more a diorama... you, the spectator sees only from the hlaf of the scene inside the fighting pit... a bit like the second new SW movie where obi wan, padme and anakin get chained up and attacked by those brutes... only... no real brutes either^^
Very nice work MauS and Vik! I like both your concepts a lot, can't wait to see how everything turns out!
@Vik: Terrain for a table or a diorama.... I'm perfectly fine with both!
@Two Spartan: Sorry to hear that....
@VitXVII: That sounds awesome! Wips please!!

I would never think something like that about you Vic. Let's just say as a result of your well-intentioned random reference, some very bad, painful memories with emotional associations of betrayal, self loathing and lost innocence were surfaced. Thinking about Mad Max helps that all go away for me.

well the last that any AB user wants is dribbling...
that price is quite decent i say... and you get some AB pistols too...even one gravity fed...oh boy...
but as i said... i first want to use the one dave gave me... so i just need a decent compressor... but that sure brought me in the right direction thanks mate!

No if you got to their shop they sell them on their own, plus get the doubled head motor it feels faster it was the only one I could fin quickly
Well the pits are looking good and all was well until someone mentioned the prequels. I had convinced myself they were just a horrible dream, but if other people know about them then that means they were real......NNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
Automatically Appended Next Post: i had to redo from scratch the whole arena set up... the former thing was way too puny looking for me... and i don´t do puny... i do enormous...
so i started on a fresh wooden plate and built up from there... leading to this:
and to see the scale:
still lots to do but i have lots of fun and still a bit of sick at home leftover time at my disposal so i hope in the comming two days i can achieve quite a lot of the groundworks...
well i am uploading a major truckload of WIP pics for my arena... i had some wicked ideas together with my wife concerning the look of the floors and walls... stay tuned...
allow me to inruduce you to a serious dose of greeness....:
note, this time i used the automatic correction options of the dakka gallery as it looked more lifelike and way more wicked this way...
the plan is to add a thin line of yellow to white inside the creases/gaps between the square tiles... to have a nice energetic feel about the surfaces...
the upper section for the audience is just primed with the first color at hand at that moment then... so ignore the setup there completly... likewise if you have some ideas for this section...let them be heard
Darn Vik,
I go away to germany for a week and you suddenly decide to redo your arena and put paint on it too... Hrm...
Gotta get to work it seems, after three days of rollercoaster madness.
Updating sunday!
For now, I gotta give my belly some rest. Europa-park's Euro-sat ruined my stomach.
You are one crafty handy man Vik! that's looking great! the green and lighting will make it pretty special! how are you faring with the robot warriors?
the ropbot warriors are on hold atm.... i need to do the bases quick now... then i need to work some more on the arena... the robots as such are done... need to be based tho...
and thanks mates... makes me feel all warm inside...
and by all means... maus... get it on mate... a competition means there needs to be others to compete against...!!!! you know what i´m saying?
Vik, the blue foam is of a density that allows primer. The surface will be a little rough afterwards, inj this case perfect for a stone surface.
If I want the surface to remain intact i usually coat the foam with a layer of Parket-Plus first, the stuff used to polish wooden floors. That way the surface isn't touched. But for this project, I actually want the surface to be a little tainted.
Pictures tomorrow... gotta load up all my holiday pictures first to empty my camera
Vik, its the blue insulation foam, just like the pink, but more dense... Probably available at the same places... I'm still looking for the pink one, cant find it over here...
I posted WIP pics of the thing I am making in my thread, it did honestly start out as an arena, but I don't think it can really count as one any more. I started adding viewing stands and before I knew it, it had become something else.
MauS wrote: Vik, its the blue insulation foam, just like the pink, but more dense... Probably available at the same places... I'm still looking for the pink one, cant find it over here...
i think i know what kind of foam you mean... is it slightly texturized?
and bruticus...
i had a quick look at your thread... will have to look into your thread tomorrow for real... seems like i´ve missed out on so much art....will be remedied
Nope, the foam comes in slabs of about 3 feet across and are used usually for insulation between walls and under floors. They come with mostly smooth sides, less grainy than the pink one. I'd really want the brownish, as thats waay easier to carve into shapes, but those are expensive here
In the states that foam comes in 4'x8' sheets and is about $11 a sheet. I just found a sheet and a half on the roadside and have been going terrain crazy for the last few weeks. I'm planning on using scraps for an eldar bastion and for this fighting pit.
So here is my WIP for the fighting pit - more accurately: the Eldar proving shrine.
Spoiler:
Still a ton of work to do, even before starting to paint. I wanted a piece of terrain that I could use as random terrain or as an Eldar Landing Platform.
wow... mars... that is very cool looking... at first i thought the base was a prefabricated hex... but then i zoomend in and saw how sharp you´ve cut your work! excellent !!!... now the worrying on my part is starting
Viktor von Domm wrote: wow... mars... that is very cool looking... at first i thought the base was a prefabricated hex... but then i zoomend in and saw how sharp you´ve cut your work! excellent !!!... now the worrying on my part is starting
I'm lucky that I can design everything in the computer and then print out pounces. Everything lines up better that way.
...unless I sell it as an alien world with strange pink stone covering the entire surface...
I like to build, but I'm not as keen on painting as I was. My plan was basically to cover the tops of the foam with sand and paint the edges to match. The Shrine platform would be grey and the Shrine itself would be purple or red. I'll have to do some photoshop to see which I like better.
(I had some time this morning to do some planning)
That is one very good looking shrine, mars! Though I think red would be a tad too.... red. Imo, light brown or a purple-bone mix would look better on it.
But then again, my brother, who plays eldar, likes the red.... and he says you should put some gems on it, lol.
Galorn wrote: not purple... Slaaaneesh would like that...
That's a good point.
I think I'm leaning toward red. My craftworld scheme is red and grey with blue spirit stones. Maybe the platform should be stone on top of a pile of SS? That might be cool (although a nightmare to make). I was thinking of having a banner hanging from the shrine somehow too, not quite sure yet how that will work. Gotta think about it...
well... if i give you any suggestions it would be like shooting my own leg.. anyways ... the landscae like this would be awesome looking... as for the shrine...hmm... whats the color theme of yon army? somehow green is more in my imagination than either red or purple... the latter as a definte no go... and no... i don´t give false suggestions here
also... gems would add a cool variety of details... maybe even carve one of these eye icons of eldars in the horizontal beam?
Viktor von Domm wrote: well... if i give you any suggestions it would be like shooting my own leg.. anyways ... the landscae like this would be awesome looking... as for the shrine...hmm... whats the color theme of yon army? somehow green is more in my imagination than either red or purple... the latter as a definte no go... and no... i don´t give false suggestions here

Yeah, that would be pretty cool. I was thinking of writing/painting them down the legs of the shrine- maybe making an eye to hang from the upper cross beam (between the two horizontal beams) like in the Stargate movie. Carving would be better though. I'll have to open it up in Illustrator and see if I can get some sequence from the Eldar font set to look ok. Good idea though.
Oh and I don't think green. 1) I think it would look funny with the yellow of the sandy environment, 2) I don't use green in my army scheme - grey, red, and a little blue. 3) maybe blue, then?
small carvings on the support beams... like you stated as in stargate and the big eye on the horizontal one...
and the blue/grey color looks better,,, then i also would go for a different color of the support beams...the grey one that is apparently your main color...
and for the base i think the same mix would be a good choice... grey as a base color and then on the raised stripes the blue...with some red gems or other details...
Automatically Appended Next Post: by the way i had a look at your gallery... cool stuff there...
those shield walls... nice idea... i think there is some valuable ideas even for my IG in there... and those orky warbikes... cool idea...

Hmm... Not sure about the idea of a multi colored shrine, mostly because there's no lines to separate the different pieces. I'll have to think about it. Maybe I can color the carved areas differently: blue or grey on red.
I was actually thinking of having a eye emblem hanging between the horizontals:
but just the eye, not on a disk.

I think you found my "blog". I don't know that I have a main thread though, other than possibly that.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Or maybe not.
How about something like this? Banners hanging from the sides and a medallion hanging from the lower bar.
Uh-oh Vik, there goes your chance to win.... mars.... I like the eye-idea a lot, and I also think the banners are cool... and blues seems to work very well....
that's gonna be a nice competition!
Where's Maede btw? and MauS?
AnUnearthlyChilde wrote: No offence, but hanging banners off of a Japanese Gate, is like slapping a billboard on the side of a church advertising Durex...
seems a little off... personally I'd go with a detailed paintjob like doing wood effect or something, or maybe crackle glaze.
Well, first off, it's an Eldar Gate/Shrine to Asuryan, but I know what you mean. I'm not sold on the banners either, to be honest, but I wasn't unsold on the idea and wanted to get some feedback. I agree with the need for strong finish on the shrine. I was thinking marble actually, but I was thinking of a Japanese gate and a solid, polished finished.
Wow that looks really cool, maybe if you didn't want banners you could add bigger raised symbols made with greenstuff or plasticard, on the ends or sides of the top bars of the gate.
Great work guys some cool things being turned out, I watch in awe as your creative images become reality.
However once again I will not be entering this comp as I cant finish my master piece, due to constraints beyond my control.
The reason is I order some stuff to build it and the order has gone a fray as I wanted to do this project anyway I cannot complete it in a substandard way.
The vision needs to be the final piece therefore I must bow out now ……. Sorry once again for not finishing a third project
For all my good intentions, I doubt I can get a finished piece done by the deadline either. I think it's hilarious that this competition has spurred me to get stuff going and keep on it, but I didn't start early enough to make it. i'm with LDD: November is possible, next week is not.
That said, I'm going to keep working on it. Vik is this what you're thinking? I'm not sure I'm sold on it, but I like it more than I thought I would.
Spoiler:
And here's what I did last night. Can anyone suggest a good filler for insulation sheet?
@ Mars: I like the blue and white scheme, but would personally only paint the lower bar in blue. Although, considering eldar, they would probably do one colour only on such a gate...
As for a decent filler... have you tried either plaster of Paris, or maybe wall filler? I'd use wall filler myself, and then use a very wet knife to smooth it all out again...
Looking good so far...
How would the first of november be for everyone, deadline wise? (Not at all influencing our judge hehehe)
Thanks everyone for all the feedback. I'm a terrible procrastinator with this sort of thing (12 hour days at work really suck it out of me). You guys are definitely keeping me on task. I love it!
Well seeing as I'm back to modelling at the minute and it looks like there's now an extended deadline I might have an idea or two I could give a quick try, so much for getting my forces ready for apoc on the 28th!
I think this just reinforces my reluctance: these gates are all one color (the little roof being different). Now that it's all carved out of one piece I just don't know where to make it look like it's pieced together and I like the idea that it was quarried it as a single piece.
I think one colour is the way to go. I do like the look of the runes up the legs, works well I think - you could then pick out the recesses in the crossbeams in the same colour as the text.
I think I prefered your earlier suggestion about the eye - having just an eye shape, hanging between the cross beams.
I'm still drawn to the blue gate. I think the cool of the blue will work well to set it off from the brown of the landscape, but I do like the white more than I thought I would. I'm thinking of trying a blue marble with white veins with red glyphs (although now that I type this I think I'd like to avoid a red/white/blue scheme). Maybe white with red glyphs would be better? I'll have to look through my concept options again.
That space between the cross beams is just so small, the eye would also be really small. I think that the medallion makes it a bit more prominent. I don't know, I also thought I'd carve the eye into the stone in the center of the platform. I'll have to look through my glyphs to see if something else would work.
well i think your latest mock up pic works for me... but i seem to be the only one here^^
and...mr merlin... i am with the rest on the extended deadline... november the first...
there is still so much to do for my own arena...i have today worked on a sort of refferee/ counter device... will show pics of primed model tomorrow...
Ignatius-Grulgor wrote: Well seeing as I'm back to modelling at the minute and it looks like there's now an extended deadline I might have an idea or two I could give a quick try, so much for getting my forces ready for apoc on the 28th!
That would be great! I'm already curios about what you'll come up with!
So, just to make the 1st Nov official :
The new and improved official -=]_=- Contest-deadline: November 1st -=]_=-
I like what mars is doing so far. He really sort of stepped out of the "fighting pit" definition making an absolutely playable piece of terrain. Fresh, elegant and practical just as I like
Update: I think I might actually make this one happen. I've decided on a treatment for the shrine and am very close to making a decision on the platform. All the terrain is sanded and painted (I'm really happy with how it turned out). I'll post pics next week after I get the shrine started - gotta wait till monday though. All in all it will be close, but I think I can finish within the (new) deadline.
Thanks again for doing this everyone. Who knows how long this would have sat on my desk before I finished it. I guess next I'll need to get into an army painting competition so I can bring a finished army to my now-terrained table.
I like these columns much better. I was also thinking that they feel small. Or maybe walls should be jutting out to the hex-walls. Something like 3D chess or something. Maybe just bigger blocks. I don't know.
I really like it regardless. Who's going to be spectating?
HA! wont tell you! but it will be worth a laugh.... thats for sure rest assured it will be crowded i tend to be rather inventive for my dioramas!!!
as for your other suggestions... all very good ideas... but time is in short suply... work is eating up most of my energy...and thus i have to cut short of new things to add... so the lower part...the fighting pit as such... will stay as seen above...
i am as sorry as the next guy because of this... to be frank... i envisioned it as a complete set of two of these dios to make a true playable field... but time ...well time is ticking away... and i NEEEEEED to make something else soon...
HA! wont tell you! but it will be worth a laugh.... thats for sure rest assured it will be crowded i tend to be rather inventive for my dioramas!!!
as for your other suggestions... all very good ideas... but time is in short suply... work is eating up most of my energy...and thus i have to cut short of new things to add... so the lower part...the fighting pit as such... will stay as seen above...
i am as sorry as the next guy because of this... to be frank... i envisioned it as a complete set of two of these dios to make a true playable field... but time ...well time is ticking away... and i NEEEEEED to make something else soon...
That was exactly what I thought when I was making those suggestions - there's no way there's time to do it. At this point, it is what it is.
And this is where I am at the moment:
Spoiler:
I'm hopefully going to paint tonight and tomorrow. Maybe I can get it in under the wire.
Well, since I couldn't cover the shrine with sculpy and bake it without probably killing myself, I'm trying air-dry clay. I added more texture this morning and will paint it tonight or tomorrow (as soon as it's dried).
Thanks for noticing my dining room wall. It busts the 4th wall of the pics, but at least the colors kind of work. My wife has a good eye for decoration.
aye... she has! it looks more stylish and not like a guys single loving room / nursery like most seen here
and did you only sort of put it on the pink foam? or did you glue the clay in place? if the former i cross my fingers for you that it wont come off all of a sudden... you could add a coat of diluted PVA to strengthen the clayfoam bond...
I wrapped the whole shrine in about 1/4" clay (sorry, my metric is rusty, but maybe 1cm?). I'm worried about durability as well. That's a good idea to coat it before painting.
Yeah, my wife doesn't like the bachelor pad look. Even if she's never at the apartment - where I'm doing all this work, she still doesn't want me living like a pig. To be fair, though, I like a little more sophistication as well. Besides, I'm an old guy now.
would ahve been more secure if you first coated the arch with PVA then aplied the wet clay... both harden and thus bond well with the foam... but giving the coat of pva might help you too... tho that might crackle too a bit... maybe a good excuse for some washes into these cracks then...
and one cm would be roughly around one finger thick...(average finger )
I think PVA on the foam before the clay would have been a tremendous mess. I'll have to figure something to seal it, though. I don't want it chipping all over the place.
well if you do it thin... then PVA (un-diluted of course ) before wouldn´t be that messy.... and if you would have lightly cured it... then it would be perfect...
well the crackling will happen due to the clay drying out... and shrinkage... only time before painting.... time to really let it dry... would help you there i think... what are the others thinking concerning this?
What kind of clay is it? Paper Clay (like DAS Clay) or something more heavy-bodied? A coupla days of drying should give it ample time to cure. Shouldnt be too bad.
As to myself, taken it to its Orky form:
May I present.... Da' Git Pit!
And walls to enclose Da Pit:
A Wip, obviously, but I know where Im going with it- All except that back corner on the "spectator stand" where there are no walls. Ive no clue what to put there. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Maybe you are right, Vik. I came home tonight to find the whole thing cracking off the foam. Crayola Air-Dry clay is not a good match for this project. Very disappointed.
So, now I have to finish it. I think I'm going to try some PVA on it's own and see if I can at least get a nice surface out of it. I don't know.
OK just proof that I am working on this, but I have to say I have had to alter the concept slightly and it is not going swimmingly The turnbuckles are still work in progress so they look a little shaky, however with some work and pure luck I might get this done in time.
The rope section lifts out as well this will make it easy to alter to the steel cage ring, that will be made at a later date mind
cool LDD.... that was my first idea too... and i quite following that route.... god to see someone else doing it... specially the parts you did in GS looks very good!
at ramos... good start... as for the backside... if it is a diorama i would make a bigger building just as a backdrop for the fighting pit.... or maybe you could do a sort of wrecked truck for the backside? would that work?
at mars... darn... i hoped you would be spared that outcome.... well i now hope for you to be able to fix it... add some sand to the PVA... this might add some depth to it...
Viktor von Domm wrote: cool LDD.... that was my first idea too... and i quite following that route.... god to see someone else doing it... specially the parts you did in GS looks very good!
Thanks mate it was something I wanted to do for a while to be honest, however I have had to alter a few things for one the wire (ropes).
I wanted to use Kits wires but they were not long enough so old guitar wire to the rescue however it is a real pain to work with.
Plus the turnbuckles are really hard to sculpt and time consuming, I just hope I can get this done in time.

oh...er... forgott to add my current work status on the arena here... mom...
Automatically Appended Next Post: see here i want to show you what i did the past coupla days... worked on the spectators section... added a video screen... (don´t get too used to the current green look of the actual screen here...thats about to get pimped...) and also added quite a large bit of hazard stripes to the section...yeah i know i probably could have done better with those black stripes... darn...
okay pics by tonight, I promise. I finished the main piece of foam and the concrete area for them to fight, now it's just painting and adding more detail.
Alright here is my nearly-completed terrain piece. Made the hill from foam, then spackled, then primered, added flock and highlighting. The stone ring in the center is plaster molded from the bottom of a tin pie dish, and the Ogyrn's base fits in (he is detachable). There are grooves leading out from the center that form the icon of Khorne, so that when dudes are slaughtered (ritually, I assume) their blood flows to form the icon of Khorne in the floor. Also the bit pictured with the skeleton and the icon and a pole, next to it is black smoke that is coming from an LED, I used one from one of those fake tea light candles so it flickers as well (not in the pics yet). The walls of the pit are of course detachable and form an AEGIS defense line.
A great scene and story behind it, lights, AND it is a playable piece that would fit flawlessly into a table! Amazing work Meade!
Crap.... and I still need to try and finish mine :/
At the risk of sounding pessimistic, I dont think Im gonna finish in time D:
Thanks man, yeah, I could play it with or without the ADL inside, it makes a nice hill for the center of a table... or just an army display board (I might need to add a little board under it but it's pretty much there), and once in awhile some champions might actually meet and fight in the middle
BTW guys I'm shut in by hurricane Sandy today so if power goes off and my internet cuts out then, well, so be it.
@Vik: Very nice little yellow lines mate. How are the spectators comings along? Can't wait to see your piece finished!
@Maede: By Khorne's beard! That pit is just perfect man, the grimdarkness and the attention to detail... I love it!
@Ramos: Sorry to hear that. Counting today, you still have four days... how much time do you need? But I don't really think I can push the deadline much further, the original one had been the 15th.... what do the others think?
well maede... looking stunning... i like the idea and the outcome... gruesome and everything looks fitting to the occasion... i hope you have everything secured... saw some pretty nasty footage of that storm front on the TV... oh my...
as for deadline extensions... hmmm... i try to finish my work tomorrow...but in fairness... if someone needs time still... give it to them... it is most depressing to be loosig due to time and RL issues...
Oh you didnt need to extend it on my account. Nevertheless, I do appreciate it! I will definitely have something done by the 3rd then- Real life and work responsibilities be damned!! Thanks a ton Merlin!
Hey guys I did indeed get hit by the hurricane posting from smrtphone, my power will be out maybe for another week and a half so don't wait up for me, there is a small chance I mite get it in by tomorrow but who knows. It is a real life figtin pit here except douchebags are fighting at the gas station!

Got the power back! I'm one of the lucky ones I guess. Thanks for the well wishes but I am in no way harmed, aside from the inconvenience of having to chainsaw up a tree or two, and not having the internet/power for three days. I pretty much just built a fire and drank hot cocoa, I have plenty of supplies set aside for the zombie apocalypse anyway. Of course some people were not so lucky, but that was more down south.
So my project is like 98% finished, so as soon as I do some chores today I just need to get the pics done and I can send in for judging.
@Maede: Stay safe. Hope you and your friends and family are safe and that all your stuff is ok. Let us know if there's anything we can do. (I never realized that this forum would be part of a person's community, to the point where you'd check in with us - that's pretty cool)
And here is Battleshrine Beleg'dea
Spoiler:
I'm working on a beauty shot (with a background that isn't my dining room), but work has been insane today so I might not get it out until this afternoon. Again, thanks for the inspiration, critiques, and push to get it done. I can't wait to see everyone else's stuff!
@Mars, thanks man, but yeah I'm doing fine, it really is the people by the water that got wiped out. But there is still no gas in our area because it is being used for emergency stuff and people hoard it for the generators. Awesome Battleshrine! It reminds me of a battle shrine on the planet Vulcan in Star Trek.
Here is my final entry, after a bit of a photo shoot today. I dub it "The Octagon". Edit: the picture in this post is high quality, and linked from elsewhere, but if you want to vote/comment for this in the dakka gallery (it freezes every time i upload a high quality pic) then click the direct link below.
So when you put an item on the grocery list (lets use Superglue as an example) what is the one item that ends up forgotten, regardless of the texts and requests made earlier in the week and the many "I'll grab it tomorrow" 's received?
Ill give you a hint. Its Superglue :/
I ran out a coupla days ago, and thus far have not secured another supply. Unfortunately, elements of my Pit (the stupid shiny grey plasticard) refuse to stick with anything else. This leaves assembly of the pit unfinished, and no way of getting it painted. I wont be able to get glue till late tomorrow.
Sorry guys, but looks like this one wont be completed in time
Once again I have let you down as I have been hit with a plague of man Flu dam you Nurgle the only thing I have been producing is large masses of green glupe, and trust me you don't want pictures of that.
I lost interest in just about everything, even had to put the builder of starting work on the kitchen for a week.
But all the entries so far look cool, mars2024 love the copper structure really has that bashed metal finish to it and the flags really makes it feel like an event.
Meade As I favour the chaos inspired this is one epic piece, my favourite part being the blood drain that was a great touch indeed, did you airbrush the circle lines and chaos star ?
very sorry to hear you guys are out of the race....
btw... who's in atm? Vik, Maede, mars.... what about MauS for example? Didn't he also want to enter this??
anyway, even if it's only you three guys.... you did some absolutely awesome work, all of you!! It will be tough picking a winner tomorrow morning (its midnight here in germany atm)
maybe some more entries turn up during the night....
Next time ill get an earlier start. I think what killed me is that i began it too late. Supply line issues took their toll, naturally, but ah well. Next round will be MINE!!
First, I want to congratulate and thank all of you for the outstanding work you've done. Every WIP pic in this thread was a joy to look at, and you did some great work, everyone!
But, there can only be one winner. And since we only have so few finished entries, I didn't have such a tough job judging this as vik had with the previous contest. I asked my brother to help me, and after a while we came to the conclusion that.....
Spoiler:
MEADE WINS! Meade, your entry is absoluteley stunning. Amazing detail work. Amazing grimdark atmosphere, amazing palette, fighters, spectators, blood effects, LEDs.... and on top of all that, its even usable on a table!
I'm sure you'd have won the last competition too if you'd found a way to include a cookie package, mate! I'm very glad you got your power back in time to share this with us!
I shall soon start working on your prize, I'll contact you before...
Thanks again all for participating in this contest.
Such an amazing bit of scenery. I think the models really help bring it to life as well - and I still just love that little psycho with the knife. I think he is one of my favourite ever minis - what parts is he made from again? I can just imagine him circling the slow ogryn, darting in to cripple with well placed stabs. For some reason it really reminds me of Trott's duel in the Malazan books if anyone has read those.
What's under the ogryn? A pool of blood? My only criticism would be that the blood is a bit bright red, the best blood recipe is tamiya clear red mixed with some black ink, it really looks a lot more realistic.
A justified victory. Alas, I had no time to finish mine, its gathering dust on my workbench as a client of mine died this week and i'm way to busy arranging his funeral and stuff. Not nice to do, but it must be done.
I promise i will finish my arena in my own thread, and i'll keep an eye out for the next one.
Sorry guys I was away for a family thing over the weekend. But thanks everybody! And I'm sad there wasn't more entries at the end... but honestly I barely made it there myself so I feel lucky.
*walks to podium*
-I'd like to thank all the chaos gods first of all, especially my man Khorne, who was clearly very inspiring for this piece, and my man Slaanesh for urging me to be sadly obsessed over details. And my man Tzeentch for twisting the fates so my power comes back on in time to enter. And dakka people for being supportive as well. And props to Mars2024 and Vic for the stiff competition.
@LDD yes the concrete barrier was airbrushed with stencil, the closest thing to freehand in this thing is the khorne blood drain that's scratched out. The other details on the center piece just came out through drybrushing and such. Sorry to hear about your plague dude!
@Bruticus yea I know about the blood, thanks for the tip dude usually I just mix together some VMA mohagany and other reds combined with water effects or gloss medium. I might have fixed that with a bit more time but gak happens. In this case my original blood mixture kind of seeped into the foam and i had to improvise a bit.
The Ogryn is standing on a scibor corpses base, they are half decayed corpses and skulls and a freshly murdered one. Like I said it's removable so I could game with the ogryn when I like.
The psycho with a knife is actually a wargames factory celt figure, I got some and they make good random cultist parts, with the knife and DV cultist head added. And yes I still have the psycho halfling... would have been in the final entry had I not been a bit cut short/distracted by other things.
@Mr.Merlin thanks for all the awesome compliments.
So this means that I get to pick the next contest and judge it? Mwuhahaha. I have some awesome ideas already.
My favorite idea atm is for an epic shrubbery contest. Who would be interested in this?
Also a ruins contest hasn't been done, that might be cool.
Also a robot/mechanoid contest of some sort.
The thing is I want to do something fun and different but also so people could build things that are usable for their own hobby. That way nobody can say they don't have the time to participate or don't need the thing in question. And even if they are not playing to win.
