D'awww gak! Love me some MkVIII power armour .
Plenty of chapters to go at with those shoulder pads.
Also, will you be keeping the dreadnought as a Blackshield per the box set fluff, or making him chapter specific?

Post by: Ustrello
Love the fact that they are putting so many chapters in the boxes. With the blackshields you can do some fun stuff like chipping away at the shoulder pad to reveal a color of the former chapter or chapter symbol

@AOV: Had not even considered a chapter for the Dread...I will rustle through my bits box and see what suitable chapter icons I have knocking around.
@Ustrello: I really like your chipping away idea, just a hint of colour could suggest any number of chapters.
I really have to pick up my game and get to some painting, but not today me and the Missus are off to a nice hotel to mark our 10 year anniversary (not marriage, that is not our kind of thing), then onto a meal and a gig. But the plan is currently Shattered Dominion board/ Stormcasts and something from Death Masque.
I have got the last of the Deathwatch made up though:
I love those mauls and storm shields, add in the shotguns from the Kill Team and you have a great Arbites feel to the miniatures.

A year after buying the thing I have finally completed the AOS Starter set. I did this by painting the 3 Prosecutors with Celestial Hammers:
So here is the Stormcast Eternal Faction:
And the Khorne Bloodbound:
And altogether:
Am really happy with them overall, to add to my Stormcasts I have the Start collecting set, a Lord Castellant and Knight Venator. Bloodbound wise I have some mighty skullcrushers, dragon ogres and a Slaughterpriest.
As for the rest of the day I will be painting a further two Realm of Battle boards up. Thanks for looking.

Cheers gents, what with anniversaries and holidays it feels like August has not been a productive month so I need to pick up the pace soon. I got my first Death Masque miniature done, a Kill Team sergeant with combi-melta and Xenophase blade. I really enjoyed painting him but the fine (well not so fine with my clunky brush work) edge highlights with fenris grey are a bit labour intensive. But he is done, and thankfully they are a small and elite army...or at least they are meant to be.
Who wore it better?
I have also got most of the work on the Arcanabulum ROB tile as well, a sepia wash was my friend when going the metals. Just a few drybrushes and flocking to go.
Thanks for looking.

@Ustrello: How many black marines have you painted in this year alone? Enough to give any sane person a nervous twitch!
Have got the Venerable Dread done, I love my dreads so this one was a joy to do. I still have the Lascannon and assault cannon alternative armaments to paint but the plasma cannon is done. Any naming suggestions? My Marine names are always awful.

@Para. My lazy way is black basecoat, silver and gold in relevant places then a black wash. Thereafter I fill in the gaps. Now that I think about it it is probably an odd way of going about it.
@EDC: Do you have a blog? you are a welcome commentator on the blogs but I do not recall seeing any of your work.
@Oddball: Thank you, assuming your geo locator is correct may I applaud you on being based in an awesome country.
I have made further progress today but autumn seems to be drawing in already and the light is fading earlier and earlier, so pictures tomorrow if time allows.

So far as I know, AoP is simply an up-to 2x2" board on which a collection of minis (usually an army, but I've seen it done with 2 as a kind of large diorama) so in theory you could enter just by taking one of your RoB sections and sticking some terrain and minis on it... Or go all out and make a custom terrain set themed around one of your armies.
Or use it as an excuse to start working on a new one... I mean, a Harlequin-themed board could be all kinds of awesome!

Had a nice day yesterday constructing a few Deathwatch characters, two more Kill teams and some Terminators. I think I will get another Kill team to round my squads off as:
Squad with bolters and power weapons.
Heavy weapon squad.
Special weapon squad (grav?Melta? plasma?)
and my favourites the shotgun squad.
Here are the Watch Captain and Terminator Captain:
Just a simple head swap on the Termy captain:
Terminator Squad:
I kitbashed a couple of meltafists, the chainfist arms are perfect for this, add in a melta pistol/combi melta bit and you are golden:
My shotgun squad, the sgt has a power fist to deal with any troublemakers:
Infernus heavy bolter and frag cannon:
I used the sternguard sprue to make a heavy flamer:
Finally a stalker pattern bolter and a grav gun using betrayal at calth mk IV arms:
I just have to finish off one last ROB tile for the tale of painters this month, so I had better get to it. Thanks for looking.

Chaos Cultists

Yeah, I'm back in the UK now! My time was great, both working and travelling. Glad to be back to the hobby. I played 2 games of The Ninth Age today, and I'm psyched to play more T9A. 40k less so, I've kind of gone off it, a little. Just looking at the releases recently it feels a lot like space-marine-hammer. Just very samey - not helped by the fact that my friend and T9A opponent today bought the new chaos psychic cards and was dissappointed when they were the same as the space marine ones. I'll be updating my blog shortly...
Congrats on painting another 100 models!! That is a metric sh*t-tonne of stuff to have finished in 9 months! The Alpha Legion between the scorpius and Rhino is my favourite, he looks awesome!

The fantasy genre has just recaptured my attention. I can't really pin it down to a handful of reasons, but after a 4 month break for the hobby, fantasy is where my mindset is at.
I think I'm seeing a lot of the flaws with 40k, too which is helping me to veer to fantasy. I played my first game back into 40k last night, and was miserable for 2 turns. I played deathwatch, and was like, "they can do what?", "are you sure that rhino can teleport to your general when he drop pods in?" and "everyone has special issue ammo?". There was just no semblance of the reasonable. The game picked up after the ridiculous alpha strike, and ended as a 1:1 draw, but I definately thought " WTF is this bullsh*t?" on a couple of occassions. Especially as I dont subscribe to the "newest, hottest toy" philosophy of 40k - I play an Imperial Fist CAD with libby, 20 tac marines, scouts, dread, podded IC Dread, LotD, 2 speeders, ST, 5 grav bikes, devs and 2 TFCs. Far from a ground breaking list.
Plus, with T9A, the game is totally different. In 40k, you just dakka stuff until it's taken off the table. T9A is a lot more cerebral. You know that in a straight up fight, you're not going to win against that combat block. You need to think a turn or two ahead and get flank attacks and out maneouver their army. Its a little more meaty. It also helps that it's a relatively new game, and gets frequent updates (v1.1 for brb and all army books was released a week or two ago). It has the support to constantly be ontop of OP stuff, not let power creep kick in and all the books are roughly on the same level (with one or two slightly ahead or behind).
I didn't realise I'd write (or bash 40k) so much - just sharing some thoughts.
78187
Post by: Thraxas Of Turai
Does not seem like bashing to me, just reasonable and fair musings on the state of 40k as a game. If some sort of reasonable balance could be found it would be one hell of a game, as it is if you are into competing at the game (not for me) there are only a handful of builds that are viable.
Anyway have had a bit of activity over the past few days, got three of my Terminators done:
I also revisited my Hawk Lords. I have come to the conclusion of mothballing them, so decided to repaint them and fit them into my Deathwatch and Blood Angels armies. Thus I have repainted my AOBR Dread for my Deathwatch, I did a weapon swap and used the Lascannon from the Venerable Dread kit:
The old one:
The new one:
I did the same for a Rhino as well:
And here is my army as it stands:

Having both BA and Deathwatch made the Hawk Lords rather redundant. As it is I only have a Tactical, assault and Terminator squad left for them infantry wise, the rest will get repainted. The main source of guilt are the Captain and Libby that Para painted up for me a few months back...I will find a home for them amongst my armies though.

Hello there, has been a quiet-ish week or so hobby wise but I have been managing to keep my oar in. Have made a bit more progress with my GSC from Dwathwatch: Overkill and have got the final four 3rd/4th Gens (or Neophytes) done. Apologies for the poor picture but the light here is shocking and it really does not do the painting justice:
That means that my current painted GSC looks like this, with just 10 Hybrids to go:
I also accidentally bought two boxes of these:
Those combined with my Overkill minis, and 8 Genestealers I have knocking around (which luckily means I can have one 10 gribbly unit or two 5 gribbly units) and possibly a couple of transports means that I will have a 1000 point GSC army.

@WarbossDakka: I would only be spending it on booze otherwise so it is a win for my health!
@Para: They will be ideal for that, the intended use of the kit is that torsos fit specific legs but a bit of cutting should sort that. The last two Blanchitsus in White Dwarf have been stellar.
@Aov: The 8 stealers from Death storm are added to the two from Overkill to make a unit of 10, I may move to 20 though.
I definitely foresee a few Goliath's in my future.

Hello there. Between work, a trip to the coast for a music festival and life in general I have not been visiting the forums much lately but have managed to keep some progress up.
On the purchase front I have 2 Goliath's and the Armoured Claw (Chimera and 10 Imperial Guard Cultists) on order, probably here by either saturday or monday. That will give me 46 Neophyte Hybrids, I plan on using some of the minis from the Goliath kit to round it up to a cool 50 Neopyhtes.
Anyway the progress. I got 4 Acolyte Hybrids done, added to my previous 2 that creates a unit of 6. (Apologies for the photography, but I just cannot seem to get good shots with Xenomorphs)
I also gotten a further 4 Purestrains done:
Here with added Deathwatch Overkill Purestrain for a legal unit:
Finally here are a few of the builds from my Neophyte boxes:
So all I have left GSC from the Overkill box is 6 Acolytes, I will probably do them after I have painted the last of my Purestrains.
Thanks for looking.

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai
I think I am going to go for another Goliath as the 6 man transport capacity of the RockGrinder restricts you to running Acolytes in it and I am more about the Neophytes. That said the grinder dozer on the RockGrinder is just soooooo cool looking.

Nice work on the vehicles. I like the use of the coloured panels, really helps tie it in with the cult dudes.
I think you'll need to talk me through how you 'accidentally' painted vehicles over infantry

Cheers everyone, I am very happy with them as well.
@Mad, thank you very much. The colours are.
Black base coat
Incubi Darkness
Thunder hawk blue dry brush on the raised edges.
50/50 Thunder hawk blue and bone edge highlights and on the rivets.
Finally weather as desire.
The colour is actually the colour I use on the Neophytes clothing that is not purple or leather, so it further ties them together.
@EDC: It all stems from my main painting philosophy, the bigger it is the easier it is to paint.

I have made a nice bit of progress with my GSC Neophytes over the past few days, in addition to the icon bearer I have finished off the other ten members of the squad:
Seismic Cannon:
Heavy Stubber:
The full 10 man squad, with leader, icon, Seismic Cannon, Heavy Stubber and 2 flamers:
I am also going to implement a numbering system on my transports using IG (or Astra Militarum if you are that way inclined):
Have also done a rough and ready test on my first Cadian cult member:
Thanks for looking.
238 Miniatures painted this year.

Cracking stuff, the Neophytes look great and that Cadian definitely fits in. I'd love GW to do some more simple upgrade frames for that kit, like Renegade Guard regiments, Tau Gue'vesa and even just other IG regiments, as the GS one makes them look so much better than regular Cadians.

The shotgun Cadian looks all kinds of badass! I think the number on the Goliath looks great too but painting thin scratches of that base blue will make it look even better in my opinion.

Done and done Bottle, and as you say it does look better. Have made a bit more progress on the Cadian Neophyte squad. 5 down with 5 to go, it also means that I have done 31 of my 50 Neophytes, they are not as much of a slog as I feared. After the other 5 are done I am going to tackle a vehicle that game wise you could seemingly defeat with popcorn...the trusty Sentinel.
One of the advantages of close up photographs is using them as little previews to see where minor touch ups are needed, the odd refinement of highlights here etc. So in the following pictures I note a few minor issues which will be sorted on my next visit to the painting table.

Really love what you're doing here, that 'cadian' unit is going to look great! GW have really found a new lease of life for that old kit people pretty much hated hey...
As someone else said, the wndows on your goliath look great too.
The more I look at the GSC stuff, the more I'm tempted to kitbash it with AdMech to do a Forgeworld chaos cult army..!

Yeah, they've got enough different colours and details on them that it won't get boring quickly. Spreading them out seems like the best course of action, and seperating them with vehicles and HQs.

@Squall: I like the Goliath as as STC vehicle for Hive and industrial areas, I like that there are no explicit Cult markings on it. It would easily be a great bit of scenery or an objective for games such as TNT.
Got the rest of the Neophyte squad done, this takes me to 36 Neophytes painted thus far. I really need to get to work on more Acolytes as they seem to be the bread and butter of the list, it is just I far prefer the Neo miniatures:
I also managed to paint up an armoured Sentinel, the Autocannon at heavy 3 is really useful given the poor ballistic skill of 3.
I also got the statue from the Honoured Imperium done. It is nothing special, just it has been near the painting station for ages.
I need a bit more work on the plinth:
Finally a command Chimera for my Magus or Primus:
I will have a go at painting my other Goliath and Chimera today, thanks for looking.

You are all too kind. I am certainly far, far from being the best painter but I strive to improve my skills whilst also painting up armies at a relatively quick pace. Goliath #2 here takes me to 249 miniatures painted for the year, so I am on pace to hit my target of 300.
So here is Goliath #2 (number 4 on the front though )

Your speed and consistency continues to amaze! We're both on a similar number of minis for the year, but you've managed to keep focus and quality up over coherent, consistent and practical forces while I've been all over the place, and I think that takes a lot more dedication and concentration. Really great stuff!

Cheers everyone, I really enjoyed returning to the Iron Warriors so cannot wait to get Prospero and to get working on them. I will also revisit and rebase a lot of my old IW to bring them up to date, Marines on 25mm bases just look wrong now.
I also got my dispatch notice for a present for the Missus for Christmas, namely Mantic's The Walking Dead All Out War boxed set. She is a big fan, the IP is not my thing as I do not like horror and gore but it will be a nice change of pace. It is only 18 minis so I hope to have it painted up for her in time for Christmas. I just need to decide whether to go full colour or the black and white style of the comics. Wish me luck.
77159
Post by: Paradigm
Ooh, black and white could be interesting... maybe experiment on a test mini first, but if it works, you'd have a brilliantly unique set.
78187
Post by: Thraxas Of Turai
Not that unique Para, seems like about half the painted minis are like that on the Walking Dead: All Out War Friendface page.
I got the game on wednesday, am pleasantly surprised by the quality of the minis in the set. A nice solid one piece miniature with good details, and the mould lines that are present are easily removed with a scraper or hobby knife. The only issue was a repeat sculpt of one of the walkers in place of another but have shockingly already got a reply from Mantic who are putting a replacement in the post. I do hope that after a number of false starts that they are getting on top of the customer service aspect of the hobby.
All told hopefully the Missus will like her present.
I have gotten my first 5 walkers done, admittedly a basic paintjob but I aim to go a bit more refined for the survivors. I also had a first stab at using Agrellan Earth for the bases.
Group hug!
And a close up of one of the bases:

Great zombies there Thraxas. Hope the missus likes her zombies and survivors .
78187
Post by: Thraxas Of Turai
@Warbossdakka: It is a new larger bottle, so the new formula. It is odd stuff to work with and it took a few test bases to work out how to use it effectively. That said Agrellan Earth is apparently the most temperamental of the paints to work with.
@AoV: I hope so too, the fun thing is she is paint blind given the amount of minis that I go through so has no idea what I am doing even though I am painting them under her nose

Post by: Barzam
If you only just got the game Wednesday, you must've gotten really inspired to pump out that many zombies in such a short time. They look good, too. Not that I actually need more zombies, but I kind of wish I'd backed the game for them. Did they come with integral bases, or did they need mounting?
78187
Post by: Thraxas Of Turai
Given Mantic's previous record on Kick-starter I think that passing by on the funding was the sensible option to take Barzam. The miniatures are one piece and already moulded to the base, so an integral 25mm base. I do not know how the bases were on the Dungeon Saga minis but these bases are hollow underneath a la GW bases rather than the flat bottoms on Deadzone and the like. That certainly helps getting them painted up quickly as you need to do a little filing and scraping on mould lines and then you are good to go.
I should get a further four zombies done today so that will be half of the set done already. I should also be getting a pack of Negan, Machonne, Abraham and walker Ronnie in the post today as well. I bought this as Michonne is the better half's favourite character and they are KS unique sculpts.

The second walker looks a bit like King Ezekiel though
78187
Post by: Thraxas Of Turai
He does actually, maybe he is a zombie version?
Anyway I completed the other 7 Walkers, that leaves the 6 Survivors up next. It was a bid odd to paint so many female figures, it just reminded me how under represented they tend to be in Wargaming.
The lady on the right was clearly at a business meeting that went VERY wrong:
Squad goals:
And the integral bases:
Am going to have to do a bit of research now on what kind of colours the Survivors wear. That takes me up to 282 minis for the year, so not long to go to hit 300.

@WarbossDakka: They certainly are, lots of bits missing and rotting flesh abounds.
@Bottle: Therein insanity lies! I think aiming for 25 a month is much more obtainable. It has been nice to see a fair amount of the grey pile disappear over the year. It also leafs to less feeling of guilt about buying new stuff.
@Grimdork. I think due to the licence that the usual Mantic KS value was not there, at £35 rrp and easily available at s
£30 or less the core set means it is easy not to have missed the KS. I think that waiting for retail is always the most sensible option as you know what you are getting.

It is a nice and useful objective marker. I caved in and being an impatient man-child I presented Cindy with the starter set the other day...
Surprisingly she loved it. She has already digested the rulebook a few times and we are going to tackle the starter scenario this weekend. She is also continuously lookin at booster/expansion packs with her various favourite characters so a few of them may be in the future. It is just odd to see her interested in what has previously been my realm of interest.
Anyway I have the month to paint 12 minis for my 300 this year, that is easily obtainable so I hope to get started on that today. Hopefully number 300 will be the new Ahriman on disc.
Avance!

Still catching up on the many blogs I've been pout of touch on - The Cultist Goliaths look amazing - the dusty weathering really works against the dark paint scheme on them. Your Iron Warriors Cataphractii do the legion proud as well! I might have to knock off the pteurge scheme when I get to my own IW Terminators.
The TWD models have come up well. I'd say I regret skipping that KS, but then my trust in Mantic isn't strong, and I've not read or watched TWD yet, so the cost of the IP tax in terms of the models was a barrier more than a selling point. You've certainly made them look good, though.

Good to see you back Azazel, you have certainly been missed. Is the weight of your heavy workload now done for the year? Hope you are fully healed and get back into the hobby with your usual aplomb.
Have managed to get a little done over the past few days. First is Rick Grimes' Sheriff badge, in the game this acts as an initiative token so whoever holds it is the active player. This is a nice little upgrade of the cardboard counter in the core game. Nothing taxing here:
I have also got Michonne painted up, this is Cindy's number one favourite character so I am glad to have her done:
I also got my replacement "missing" Zombie from Mantic and have painted him up. I got him a mere week after bringing up the issue with Mantic, so hopefully they are finally on top of their customer service issues.
I also painted up the Zombie Ronnie Renton, here he is replete in his Mantic branded blue polo shirt. He looks very happy for a man whose ankle is basically hanging off:
And I also put an order in on Wednesday with Firestorm Games, based in Wales. (How to describe Wales to our friends in America and Australia? Hmmm, they are basically a much lesser Canada or New Zealand . I can say this as a Welshman myself). Was really happy with the service and delivery that arrived this morning. Moar Walking Dead:
I think the scenery pack is really useful, 4 cars (two repeated) and a multitude of barriers and objectives etc.
Finally I popped into my local GW too, All Is Dust:
I may go for an ancient looking gold scheme for these with minimal blue accents, their main scheme is a bit much for me.
Thanks for looking.

@AoV: Magnus loyal Rubricae sound interesting, any pointers as to what the scheme is?
@Zambro: I am thinking of ancient suits for the rubrics, but not totally sure yet.

I've gotta say, all of that TWD stuff looks really good. Mantic have outdone themselves with the quality of these models and scenery. I order from Firestorm pretty regularly, and they're a great supplier. You've done a great job on the zombies and heroes as well - and the badge/player marker is outstanding. As for the Welsh, aside from an over-fondness for sheep (so I'm told), they're the last of the true Britons, they have those awesome names, and we'd not have Rob Brydon or Tom Jones or Gimli.
I'm really tempted by the Rubricae marines, but I'm going to hold out for some sort of army bundle box. Because I want heaps of them, do do both in blue, in red, and as mix-and-match with MKIV armour. I will gladly watch what you manage to do with them and drool from a distance.
As for my work, I've still got a couple of weeks of attendance before we break for Christmas, but the endless homework and insanity is done, and what's left is largely going to be preparing things for the start of next year. I've also got some time in lieu set aside, so I'll finish a couple of days early as well and have the whole of the Christmas week to recharge and waste time with games and paint.

Aye, very happy with Firestorm and the minis and game thus far. We had a few play through of the tutorial scenarios yesterday and it was both fun and engrossing. It was weird with Cindy having no terms of reference for miniature wargames but seemed to pick up the basics well. She especially enjoyed uncovering a hockey stick and headshotting a zombie into oblivion!
I think a 1k Sons box is inevitable, so it is probably sensible to hang fire. Glad to hear that you are back in the game.

I skipped TWD game since I'm frustrated with Mantic still. I'll play KOW, but mainly with existing armies I have of ones built using other company figure . But that scenery pack might by my next Mantic purchase if I can get it from Miniaturemarket or some other discounter. I may have missed it but do the figs line up size wise with zombicide?
Great painting by the way .
78187
Post by: Thraxas Of Turai
@Theo: SadlyI have absolutely no context at all for the size vs Zombiecide minis, I would say that at a guess they are a similar height but are a fair bit chunkier than the CMON minis. I will fish around the facebook group to see if anyone has done any comparisons.
Have got a couple more Survivors painted up, namely Negan and Abraham. Very happy that I added proper modelling barbed wire to Lucille (Negan's baseball bat) for some added definition. The face on Abraham was a bit of a pain, a bit flat and ill defined for my painting "skills", but I am calling him done.

Cheers gents, all encouragement is appreciated.
At the start of the year I pledged to try and paint 300 miniatures over the calendar year, as it stands I am at 299. These last six minis put me on the cusp, they are all from the Prelude to Woodbury expansion from Mantic. This is a solo starter set and is really cool for a play through if you have no one to game with.
The only survivor in the pack, the Governor Brian Blake. I am really happy with the face on him but it does not seem to translate in the photos, hey ho:
And his 5 zombie opponents:
I really like the "lady" on the left, she reminds me of a character from the 80's zombie classic "They Live" which starred wrestling legend Rowdy Roddy Piper:
I have also gotten Ahriman constructed, he is a cracking kit:
And here are minis 201 through 299. As you can see they are mainly GSC, but there is some Deatwatch, Iron Warriors and a fair bit of Walking Dead thrown in there.
Thank you for looking, now onto 300.

My WP pledge arrived in the interim, and the models seem quite nice actually. Credit to mantic on upping their game for the HIPS stuff. And only missing one bag of models this time, and it only took a few days for them to answer the follow-up email and a couple more to have them sent out, so they're in transit somewhere. I still can't really see myself backing Star Saga though since they still haven't figured out hub shipping, their expensive shipping plus 10% GST (VAT) on top of the lot which will be in place by the time they ship make backing any more of their Kickstarters cost prohibitive, especially with "Mantic risk" taken into consideration.
