Will do. Once I get setup and try a test paint session I'll do up a post of the whole experience.

I do want to share my current display case setup now that it's somewhat complete. Over the past two months I've been getting setup and moved into my new apartment and I ended up selling the two detolf cases I had years ago that were in storage. I looked around a few retail display case shops for suitable options but because of costs and the hassle of delivery (some required a commercial loading dock and freight delivery) I decided on going back to Ikea to buy the display case.

I ended up picking up the Ikea Milsbo in Anthracite (https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/milsbo-glass-door-cabinet-anthracite-30396448/) for a pretty decent price of $229 CAD - and best of all the packages fit in the back of my car without any issues. I really like the legs which elevate the case off the floor and the locking feature. Also useful is that the shelves can be set a different heights of the case as they rest of these adjustable pegs which are screwed into the sides of the frame.

Some cons are that the frame in the middle is a bit wider than I like which obstructs the view a bit and the legs of the case flares out meaning you can't put two of these side by side to have the edges be flush against each other. Also I do wish you had to option of buying additional shelves from Ikea as I found out later the 4 shelves do not provide enough room for my entire collection of painted models. The way the glass shelves are designed make it harder to get glassier shops to custom cut them as the corners are chamfered so they can rest on the pegs.

Anyhow, after a evening of assembling I was left with this:

Not too shabby...the next day I pulled out my models from storage for test fitting:

This is when I realized I had much more in my collection than I remembered

This all just meant I had to be more selective with my model choice for showcasing...

Case Mods
What's a good hobby post without modding advice? There were two problems with the Milsbo I wanted to tackle:

1. Dust Sealing: After assembly I discovered the case has some large gaps around the door frame. This is an known issue with the detolfs as well and over time, dust can get into the case if sealing mods are not done. I wanted to make sure this new Milsbo case was well sealed to reduce the amount of cleaning I would need to do. To do this I use the same solution many Detolf owners use which is adhesive weather stripping. I ended up two types:
- 3/8" wide and 1/8" thick for the door sides and middle gap (the sides need a bit more room for the doors to open close and the gap between the two front doors were small enough that the 1/8" seal was perfect
- 3/8" wide and 5/16" thick for the top and bottoms of the doors (this gap was a bit bigger and the thicker foam ensures a tight seal)
The sealing was applied to the back and sides of the front doors so it's pretty much invisible to the viewer with the doors closed. They can be seen in the later pictures showing the side LED lighting.

2. Internal Lighting: I also wanted to do some custom lighting to brighten things up in the evenings. I know Ikea sells some ready made ones but I felt none of them would be suitable for the case and I wanted a more bespoke solution. I ended up picking up the following parts from Amazon:
- Lepro LED Strip Lights (16.4 ft 3000k-6000k tunable white) SMD 2835. Looking back these are a waste as I'll be replacing them with some SMD 3014 204leds/m. The colour temp adjustment is not necessary as I found I didn't need the adjustment and most of it is not that noticeable after it's placed behind the aluminum railing with diffuser. These LEDs also require 3 wires (instead of 2) which makes soldering them more of a chore.
- LED Aluminum Channel with Cover. These worked great with the LED strip lights as the cover diffuses the light evenly into the case and the width of the channels are perfectly sized to place in the front corners of the case. I ended up cutting the channels to size (hobby hacksaw FTW!) for each of the shelf heights and then securing them to the inside using 3M velcro tape. Each section was soldered to each other with a break in the top corners where I used hot swap sockets for a temporary connection. The 3M velcro allows the side lights to be securely attached while easily detached for maintenance or readjustment while the top LED channels were secured using magnets (the top panel of the case is steel while the sides are aluminum - otherwise I would have used magnets all around).

Pic showing the connection for the side/top corner and the foam weather seal on the inside of the door (note the taped magnet for the loose wires so it doesn't hang down ):

Pic showing the side LED channels:

Also not pictured is the LEDs are wired to a smart plug which is scheduled for a timer to turn on/off in the evenings/midnight and allows me to manually control it via google home.

And the fully sealed, lit and filled case:

I managed to cram most of my models in there but lot of my older tanks and troops didn't make it. Here's a quick pic of the troop rejects pile:

(these guys are all magnetized and stored in these plastic storage boxes with tin sheets glued to the bottom which is a much more space efficient way of storing troops!).

Still to do for the case mods are to replace the current LEDs with the currently in transit SMD 3014 LED strips, resolder everything using black wires (which will blend in better) and put in the end caps onto the LED channels.

Haha thanks Gits. Will think about the positioning later but don't have much room to work with in this apartment room at the moment.

Thanks Dysartes! They're actually acrylic cases I bought at Daiso (japanese dollar store) many years ago. Not sure if they're sold anymore but they come with 4 compartments which I found were the perfect fit for 28mm minis.

Yeah I'm still thinking about picking up another Milsbo or a Detolf. Should have more than enough models to fill up either but it's more of a matter if I can find space for it without pissing off the wife

Thanks Argive and no worries...the detolf is still an excellent case with better visibility than the Milsbo. I'm still considering adding a detolf to the room to add more display capacity in order to display the rest of my models.

I think so but it's been so long that I can't really remember 100%. The body, legs should all definitely be DV kits. Should pads are for sure BA ones...others are probably all from here and there though the plasma cannon guy is all DV and same with the sergeant.

Been awhile since my last post as I haven't had a chance to setup a painting station after moving in. Finally had some downtime over the holidays and spent most of that playing Cyberpunk 2077. The other time I had left was to setup a properly airbrush and paint station and got to work painting my backlog. Just focusing on doing single models for now. Here's what I've managed in the past month or so:

1. Ennox Sorrlock - Sternguard Veteran: from the Kill Team Cassius boxset. Removed the Iron Hands iconography and painted him up as a Blood Angel.

2. Jensus Natorian - Codicer Librarian: second model from the Kill Team Cassius boxset. Same as before, removed as much Blood Raven iconography as I could and painted him up as a BA librarian

3. Vael Donatus - Sternguard Veteran: third guy from Kill Team Cassius. UM iconography removed and painted red!

4. Ortan Cassius - Chaplain: last one from KTC with UM iconography removed.

5. Sergeant Chronus: had this model for a long time (metal model) that I stripped a few years back and never repainted until now. The 2nd version of him in a turret I'm already using in one of my earlier Land Raiders. Spent some additional time on this one filing off all the UM iconography; the centre chest icon was especially tricky but I managed to get it off without too much damage to the surrounding areas and then proceeded to glue a BA drop icon which turned out quite well.

6. Kyrin Solaq: Believe this guy is a captain of the Raven Guard but always loved the dynamic pose so repainted him like all others above in BA colours and icons.

7. Watch Captain Artemis: last of this bunch, this is a faithful reproduction of the 54mm Inquisitor model that's repainted in BA colours to add to my collection of captains!

Next up in queue is the techmarine with thunderfire cannon. One of the worst models to put together as it was in fine cast and the quality was absolutely terrible - the worst recast models from China looks better than the finecast version of this! Anyhow pictures to follow shortly!

Fantastic selection of Blood Angels from the KT Cassius box, they all look really well done. I also had to have a snoop through the pages of your blog and blown away by the quality, I really like how you've done your Blood Angels, darker reds feel better than the super bright flat red they're usually painted as.

Thanks TH! Yes when I first started my collection 10+ years ago I wanted a much more darker/muted red. Over the years I've slowly moved over to a bit brighter of a red to give things more of a contrast. I think I've struck a happy medium between my old stuff and GW's very high contrast bright reds but who knows...maybe in another 10 years I'll be at GW's gold standard

Quick update as I found a squad in my display case painted up from the holidays that I forgot to take photos of. Presenting the FW MKV Assault Squad! I actually bought these guys back in 2011 and they "only" cost £32 back then!

I've bought and collected a few other armies over the years since starting the BA but quickly came to the realization that I can't paint fast enough to keep up with the pace of Space Marine and Blood Angel releases not to mention others. I'll be painting well after I'm retired at this point so I reluctantly sold off those armies.

Finished off a model that has been one of the biggest pain in the butt to assemble - the venerable thunderfire cannon. I've heard many complaints about the pewter version and can't imagine they'd be worse than the finecast one I got which had so many bubbles and miscasts - can't believe GW actually lets some of these go through their QC! Anyhow, here's the model done and finished so I won't have to build/paint another one again!

Also a sneek peek at something else on my desk that's in progress...my 3rd titan:

Nope, can't do it. I just don't squeee. Though I am looking forward to the titan coming together!

I've got two of the old metal ones and primarily it was their bulk and poor fit that made them so hard to deal with. Finecast was just a nightmare from start to finish though.

You're assuming they have some form of QC, Eggroll - if they do, there are some definite questions about qualifications for the role.

Nice work on the Thunderfire Cannon, and looking forwards to Titan #3 - what weapons will this one be packing?

Thanks Dysartes! Ha that is true...probably makes more sense to just throw it in and hope that most people don't complain enough to ask for replacements instead of paying someone to QC the models.
For the Mars, I'll just reuse two of the weapons from the 4 I painted for the Lucius years ago. I think there are small variations in the trim of the weapons between the Mars and Lucius but don't think it'll be enough to distract. They're all magnetized so should be easy swaps. The Lucius right now is sitting in my display case with the turbo laser and plasma cannon so the Mars will get the mega bolter and inferno cannon by default.

Viterbi wrote:Love those last Kill Team Cassius conversions, the glow on the jump pack exhausts is amazing!

Quick update on the Titan...got the black trim done and some of the metallics. Still need to do the head and upper carapace before I start shading it all with the airbrush.

Yup! I feel the same way...I think the jackal lucius patterns fit the warhammer imperium design theme much better than the mars designs. I only wish they did a lucius pattern reaver. I've always wanted to design my own and print it out on a resin printer in parts later on...

Thanks for the tip! Just did a google search for it and came across some references to it from 4 years ago. That's very similar to what I want to do with mine so will definitely use that as reference. The video I saw mentioned the full sized version was made of foam core and seems a bit rough up close. 3D printing has come a long ways since then so I'm sure with resin printers these days, you can get close if not equivalent details as forgeworld models on a scale of this size.

That's it...i pulled the trigger and just ordered a Elegoo Mars 2 off Amazon. Will see how that goes and will have to dust off and brush up on my 3d modeling skills.

Next step is shading of the metallics with airbrush and inks.

Also these turned up today from Amazon:

Hilarious you mentioned the Mars and Mars pattern...I honestly never connected those two dots but now that you have it's a nice coincidence. Actually the Elegoo Mars are quite round and fits the Mars pattern look while the AnyCubic Photo (other popular consumer resin printer) looks more like the Lucius pattern version.

Happy to share my 3d printing adventures. Hopefully it will turn out as well as my first airbrush journey started at the beginning of this plog. Will be sure to post more updates as things progress...check below for my latest update!

Dysartes wrote:Warhound is coming along a treat, Eggroll.

Thanks Dysartes! Nothing specific right now...mostly just tinkering and playing around with free online models. Hoping to get a shot at designing and printing my own eventually but that's a ways off.

So I had some time this Saturday to unpack the Mars 2 and run a test print. Here are the two machines: Mars 2 and Mercury Plus...

The most common first test print is a rook model that comes on the USB drive but I decided against that. Instead, I went full Blood Angel theme with my first print featuring a proxy for Dante (I think the author of the model made him a Primaris. Of course this model was printed in Clear Red resin. My first print came out fantastic but realized that since I haven't done any Primaris marines, this wouldn't work as well...I'm not done with my first born models yet. So then I decided to get the model back into Chitubox (3d modeling slicer software for resin printing) and scale down the model to 85% of the original. This resulted in a nicely sized first born Dante that is much more dynamic than the original pewter version.

Here's a picture of the print with black primer:

If you look closely, you'll see some layer lines, especially around the axe and leg armour. This print was done at 0.025mm layer height with no anti-aliasing. Might need to play around to see if I'm able to reduce these lines so the prints are smoother. I'm also using the default file with supports so I think I can make things print a bit better by tweaking the print orientation.

Anyway, here's a shot of the model with a quick airbrush of metallic golds next to the primaris sized version that's still in clear red resin:

Closeup of the amazing model details and what the printer was able to capture:

Overall I'm quite impressed with the print quality - don't think it'll be a suitable 1 to 1 replacement of current GW plastics but it's almost there! The Mars 2 is still a 2k printer so the newer 4k printer from Anycubic (Anycubic 4k Mini) might be better suited for minis. Anyhow, I've found many other models online such as the thunderfire cannon that I'll be queueing up to print later and comparing against my GW finecast version

Of course you get the "Mars pattern" printer, Mars patterns are always the best! (thank heavens you didn't get the Lucius pattern one)

Thanks Git! Yup love doing the Blood Angel assault squad colour theme on giant robots

Have you got anything specific in mind you're wanting to print?

Yeah, I too have been thinking that a 4K printer with a small build plate is where things are getting very close to GW quality. Just waiting for the tech to mature a bit more, there aren't a lot of 4K printers with small plates on the market yet.

Well I have always loved Blood Angels, and admired tour work for a long time, so seeing 3D Dante is even a bigger plus. I’ll have to look for that print and try him in FDM as I have not gone to resin....yet. He looks amazing and will lead my new Primaris guys well.

Thanks Theophony! This Dante I actually had to buy from Cults3D. Great thing about it is it's pre-supported so it's pretty much a straight download and print.

With the resin 3d printer I've been exploring some other customization possibilities and one that I always wanted to try out was themed base nameplates. I know there are a few online companies/etsy shops that will do something like this with print to order but now that I have my own printer, I wanted to make my own. Dusted off my 3d modeling skills tonight and after a few hours I came up with the following:

Still need to do some tweaking and haven't decided on what to do with the iconography yet...planning on 3 blood drops for HQs, 2 for Elites and maybe 1 for Sergeants. Quite happy with how the side wings came out.
Made most of the model using standard blender modifiers so I'll be able to quickly swap out the text and update it for all my BA army characters. For named characters I might swap that out for the GW skull icons. Above picture is on a 40mm base so I'll need to still tweak it to fit on 32mm and 25mm sizes. Can't wait to do a test print of this!

An update on something different. I plan on doing an army showcase video soon...waiting on the warhound to be done before getting everything out and recording a video. I never liked the videos where the person talking behind the camera is pointing and waving their hands around and recall seeing a showcase video on YouTube where they used the disney magic wand with the pointing mickey mouse hand which I thought was hilarious and quite useful. Since I just got my own 3d printer, I set out to make my own "pointing stick" to use when I do my actual video - but appropriately themed...there won't be any mickey mouse hands for me!

I ended up taking a pointing power fist model on thingiverse (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4073902) and mirroring the fist in Blender, scaling it up and then modifying the mesh so that the end joint was recessed to fit a wooden dowel 9.5mm in diameter.

Wanting to add some extra flourish to my pointing power fist, I took the pommel of another fancy power sword model (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3652865) and made the same type of end cap to fit on the other end of my stick:

Into the printing software it went for slicing and 5.5 hours later after hitting print I had my parts! Was so excited with the actual results that I totally forgot to take pictures of the actual unpainted model but here is the end result after painting and decal work:

Thanks IGtR! Love playing around with the printer so far and definitely adds more to the whole mini hobby.

Another week has gone by and I've been totally side tracked from the Warhound titan! Instead I've been fiddling around with Blender and doing more 3D prints - love tinkering with the thing and am amazed with each round of prints how much detail it's able to capture.

Been getting some practice with the 3d software by making some of my own Horus Heresy era Blood Angel shoulder pads. Nothing good is available online from what I've seen and though I do have some FW versions, I don't particularly like them too much. I ended up take a picture of the HH BA icon from the FW transfer sheet and then bringing that into Blender to make my own 3d model. Once done, I transformed it onto blank shoulder pads I got from here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3875032

Here's how things looked in Blender:

Printed plate full of Mk2 pads (and one nameplate that I had misspelt from a previous session):

One pad with a quick hit of black primer:

The layer lines do appear in these close up photos but to the naked eye they're not noticeable at all!

Also did the rest of my captains and elites with name plates. Here's a shot of the dreadnought army:

It's been a few weeks but I've finally shifted focus back to the warhound. Had a good paint session over the weekend that saw the completion of all the interior details and shading, followed by a gloss clear coat and then decals. Once the decals have fully set, will start working on the weathering and battle damage before sealing it all in a matte varnish and calling it done.

Snapped these two more WIP shots of the progress so far:

Weapon arms were stolen from my Lucius Warhound I finished a few years back that had the 4 various weapon options - 2 of them will be repurposed for the Mars once everything is finished.

Thanks Viterbi! The interior details took forever to paint with all the small buttons and screens but was worth it - if the sculptor put in the effort to model it then I figure it would only be fair that I put in the effort to paint it. Did the same for all the previous titans.

Funny you should mentioned the dreads...I showed some others the pic and most thought the pic were a pic of AT models until they saw the little baby dreadnoughts

I had painted up the original 4 that (in pewter) and can only wish GW made these ones in pewter as well but unfortunately they only came in finecast. :( These guys took a long time to clean up and fill of the various bubbles and in the end I think I still missed quite a few but hopefully they're not too obvious.

LOL you know I went back to look at the model again and you're absolutely right! There should be writing on the back since it's one half of the huge wall of text the captain is reading. Hmmm my laziness is going to win out this time and I'll leave it as is and hope no one else notices

Big update this time around as I've got quite a bit painted since my last post. First up the the updated FW land speeder proteus:

I think this land speeder proteus is my very first heresy model which then led to the following:

And then:

The tracks on both tanks were the biggest pain in the butt to put together as it seems it didn't' really want to line up. In the end I ended up chopping a few track sections and milliputting the segments together.

And finally I decided to open one of my limited edition captains I've had sitting around untouched forever:

Being finecast, I expected the worst but thankfully the cast wasn't too bad and didn't require too much cleanup/prep work:

And the finished model:

Painted with reference to the 2nd ed boxcover:

Thanks Tom! Great to see you still kicking around here

I'm actually planning on an army photo shoot sometime soon as it's been almost 4 years since my last one and I've almost doubled my model point count (now just over 30k points).

Funny you should ask what's next...I was always planning on doing the Primaris stuff soon but with the recent completion of the Land Speeder Proteus and the retro BA Gamesday Captain, I've been on a nostalgia kick. Recently went on a massive hunt for older pewter models from eBay and got quite a few pounds of metal models now added to the backlog (and a few more in the mail coming next week). Will look to do some of those models as they're less detailed and quicker to paint before shifting gears back to the more "recent" first born plastics. No plans on stopping anytime soon and the army will only get bigger and better

Well it's been 5-ish years since the last time (https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/1620/313003.page#9050595) I got everything out and took a full army shot and that's exactly what I did today. Having taken the week off work and not being able to travel anywhere, I figured this would be the best time for such a thing.

Whole process was a bit of a pain given the size of the army now and from setup to teardown I think it must have taken me over 6 hours! I did try and shoot a short video and might post that at a later date once I get a chance to review/edit.

Stats of the collection as of this photo shoot:
Total Points (Battlescribe): 30,991
Total Models: 401

Last time I took an army shot, I used the Realm of Battle board which has since been sold - I've actually sold most of my terrain after my last move to downsize my hobby "stuff". Currently using the badlands FAT mat which works much better.

First off...here are the big overall army photos (open the images in a new window to see the full sized versions):

And to pay homage to the OG Scouts that started it all off back in 2007:

Those army shots are breathtaking, I would've been so scared accidentally stepping on something during setup
And great work on the old captain, I distinctly remember that art, even if I wasn't an active player back then.

That's astonishing. So many incredible pieces. I like that you included those bits of scenery, adds a sense of scale. Just over 30k points? Not long till you reach the magic number of 40k

That's easily the most awesome looking BA army I've ever seen! Also loving those recent HH models you did, especially the RT era Land Raider looks gorgeous

I have to ask, how did you get that HH landspeeder to stay level in its flight stand? Did you have to glue it to the stand? I'm working on the same model myself and the engine blocks are so heavy I'm having a hard time getting the model to stay level without gluing it to the stand..

(The tempered steel effect on the landspeeders' engines looks great, too.)

Thanks Viterbi! Funny you should mention it...as I was setting up and finishing off the arrangement I commented to my wife who was watching that if I tripped and fell into the middle of the pile I would cry ...not from the pain of the pointy swords/bits that would dig into my body but from the loss of models. Happy to report none of that happened and the models made it back safely into their storage cases/display cases after I was done

Thanks inmygravenimage! I'm pushing hard towards that magical 40k number! Should be there in another two or three years...

Thanks tauist! I'm actually going backwards and collecting more 2nd edition OOP models now. I was suppose to move onto the newer Primaris stuff soon but doing that land speeder has sparked my interest in some of the classic models.

For the stand I had the same issue and ended up giving on the normal one that came with it. Instead I got from my bases bits box another clear stand that has a ball and socket joint which was much tighter. I super glued the socket joint to the LS and the the ball stand sockets in securely and nicely into that. Just tried to find a source pic online for it but can't seem to locate one so I have no clue where I got that from...here's the pic of the socket joint: https://imgur.com/a/AzvVHRg

That's incredible, such a huge army and it's all so well painted. With most collections it's quantity or quality, but you've managed to pull off both - you should be really proud! Also I know your pain regarding setting up for the photo - my Biel-Tan is a third that points count, and they took me absolutely ages to set up and put away the last time I took some army photos.

Yup, I plan on getting three quarters of the way there to 40k and then busting out the warlord to get me the rest of the way

After doing the land speeder proteus, it got me looking back at some of the classic models which started my collecting itch once again. I was suppose to be working on my remaining first born stuff in order to complete what I have so I can start on the primaris bits but the nostalgia bit me hard and I spent the last few weeks on eBay collecting up all the older Space Marine/Blood Angel models I didn't already have in my collection focusing on 2nd ed onwards (I've decided to skip on the RT stuff for now).

Most of the stuff arrived a few weeks later and most required a simple green bath in the ultrasonic. Working on these older metal models was a nice change up and the simplier model designs allowed for faster batch paint jobs.

First up are the older Libarian/Codicier/Lexicanium/Epistolary models:

Still to complete are 2 older Terminator Librarians (both really old metal sculpts) and the newest limited edition Lexicanum Terminator Varus. Once I have those ones done my Blood Angels Book Club of Librarians will finally be complete!

Mephy gets to hang out with the big boys on the top shelf of my main display case:

Unfortunately the apothecary I bought from ebay (pictured above) was modded with the narthecium clipped off so I've had to find a 2nd set. I've currently got a bnib set of the honour guard in the post to me right now so I'll be starting on those once I'm done with the Libbies and Chappies.

HA!
I also lost the nathecium (at the elbow where the bit connects) in the early 00's I chopped a right bolter arm at the elbow and used a bit from the command squad box in 5e; it looks wonky TBH. But I also ended up buying another Honour Guard box. one of the best boxes of mixed plastic and metal IMHO. I'm going to have to start chasing your points total now that my kids are old enough that I can hobby again.

Ah, that's a good tip. I didn't realize that comes off at the elbow - I'll have to go pry that off and do a similar kitbash as what you've described. I actually didn't realize the Honour Guard came in an actual box - the most recent BNIB version I bought off ebay comes with all the metal bits in a blister pack but I'm sure I have all the other parts needed in plastic to make the whole squad.

Good stuff with the army build! Look forward to seeing yours bulked up!

That’s got a picture of the box and the bits from the ordering catalogue. The narthecium slots into the shoulder pad more or less like the tech marine arm. IIRC the sanguinary priest body is just a shoulder pad added onto one of the metal deathcompany marines. That’s a lie it’s not IIRC; I have about 40 of those metals and it totally is.
I also just so happened to stumble across that second nartheicium in a box yesterday once I mentioned it was lost in public; so thank you for that kharmic help.

Ah thanks for that reference pic. Will make sure to build mine out "bits accurate" when I get my blister pack. Good to hear you were able to locate the lost nartheicium...I've gone almost mad countless times trying to locate that one last bit to complete a build and know the triumphant feeling when you find it

In keeping with my nostalgia/retrohammer kick that I've been on recently, I've finished off a group of old school pewter models that are circa 1990's. These guys were lots of fun to paint and it's amazing the details they were able to cram into these models even back in the day. Actually started counting the number of skulls on each of these models and most of them are in the 16-18 skull range!

Onto the pics:

And finally my display shelf for the book club members and the bible thumpers:

Current collection count:
416 painted models
32226 points total

Thanks Paradigm! I used to think the same thing about retro minis until I started painting a few. Their aesthetics definitely is more of an acquired "taste" but their overall design and details is still quite astounding given they're from the pre-CAD era where it was mostly done by hand. Painting and collecting them really scratched the completionist part of me and I do enjoy looking at them on the shelf alongside the more modern models.

I must have checked it every week in ~2015 and figured even then you had more blood angels than any other human on the planet and would slow down.

The collection of librarian and chaplain models alone is amazing.
The fact that they look about the right army ratio against the rows and rows of troops is insane.

Think this will definitely be one of those lifetime hobbies for me. The world is a big place and I'm sure there are others out there with a bigger Blood Angel army. I'm still working on building and painting some of the older firstborn models . Hopefully will have more to show soon as I recently picked up 2 of the old school all metal dreadnoughts.

It's been awhile since I last finished/posted a model but did manage to get a last burst of painting in before 2022 hits.

First is a 5 man Honour Guard squad. These are actually the old Blood Angel metal bits from way way back and I don't think this is even a valid codex entry in the current version anymore but I'm still quite happy to add this to my BA collection in order to check one more thing off my list:

Next one is another very old metal model...the venerable dreadnought which took me a long time to track down - finally find someone earlier this year selling a new in box version on Facebook marketplace that was local to me so I snagged that quick! This is my second metal dreadnought model and I'm still surprised at the heft of this thing which is a pain when it comes to painting. Thank god for the newer plastic kits!

Only remaining dreadnought left to paint and add to the collection is the classic BA one with the multi-melta (also all metal) which is currently in the painting stages.

Current painted collection sits at:
- 32,904 Points
- 421 Models

Another thing I did recently is I started tracking my painting and collection catalog in Notion via a tabled database with each painted model/squad with it's own page with images. This allows me to catalog not only the pictures but also details around each of the units with points, unit numbers, upgrades and type which rolls up in to a main table. This is a huge improvement over my previous google sheets. A few pics of this in case anyone is curious:

Finally since we're winding down 2021 I've gone through and did another year in review/summary of everything I've painted this year:

2021

Jan
Kyrin Solaq (Captain)
Watch Captain Artemis (Captain)
Ennox Sorrlock (Sternguard Vet)

Jun

Thanks Auston! Actually already have old metal furioso in my collection already though I named him "Zariah". Also have a DC dread named "Amutio". If I do another version of it in the future (either plastic or metal) I will be sure to name that one Moriar.

Thanks ShadowsAndDust! Don't worry about how yours looks - we all start from somewhere and my original scouts weren't the best but I still keep them around to remind myself of my progress.

Thanks Viterbi! Yeah I was very happy to find the model (brand new in box too!) and add him to the collection. Just need to find a suitable name for him and get a 3d printed nameplate done up.

First models to add to the collection for 2022! Had the first week of the year off from work and with no traveling, I managed to get quite a bit of painting in during the staycation.

First up is the metal Ezekiel model added to the Librarian book club. Managed to scrap off most of the DA iconography or covert them to a wing/blood drop. Given we all know the DA are traitors...him turning into a BA librarian isn't that big of a stretch!

Next up is the all metal dreadnought. I already had the metal furioso in my collection and managed to grab this guy (pre-painted) from Troll Trader. Spent a bit stripping off the previous paintjob and repainted him in my army colours. The only thing left is to print off a paper banner similar to the ones that came with the kit many decades ago:

Finally, I painted up a 10 man squad of dual lightning claw terminators. These guys are a kitbash from many kits, BA terminator, DA deathwing knights, Space Hulk terminators, and the regular assault terminator box:

Haven't decided what's next yet...still have 30 terminators primed and based coated though I might change paces to a vehicle. Recently acquired 2 of the old Baal predators with the metal sponsons and assault cannon so perhaps will take a crack at one of those. More to come!

Took pictures of 2 more squads of terminators which were finished last week. These guys are equipped with thunderhammers and storm shields and similar to the LC terminators where they're kitbashed from many different terminator kits (blood angels, space hulk, dark angels and regular SM). My terminator collection is growing quickly and had a blast painting these up. I also tried to experiment with oil shading a bit more with these ones to try and cut down on time spent doing manual black lining brush work which turned out quite well and saved me about an hour off each model.

Onto the pics:

Squad 1:

Squad 2:

Still have about 20 regular terminators base coated waiting for finishing but think I'll switch focus to a different unit type (undecided for now). With these guys, this puts my Jan painted model count at 22!

Nope, I never really set goals for my hobby as I'd rather not have that kind of pressure on something that I do mainly as a way to decompress and destress. I would like to hit around 50 units per year which I seem to be averaging in the past few. This year I would like to get Sanguinius done and maybe another Lord of War like the Thunderhawk or Warlord.

Thanks Viterbi! I wasn't too sure about him when he was first coming together but afterwards I really liked the uniqueness it gave to the squad instead of have all similar types of thunderhammer and shields. Hopefully won't be a point of contention if these guys ever hit the gaming table.

whalemusic360 wrote:Well you are nearly half way to the 50 mark with plenty of time to go in the year. Guess its time to break out the Warlord.

Thanks whalemusic! Yes, these terminators have gone surprisingly fast - some of which I attribute to the use of oils for quick shading instead of manually black lining/blocking out all the details first before painting. These bits of streamlining in my whole process definitely helps and gives me a mental boost when I see these come out so much quicker!

Warlord soon...I need to unpack him and give him a bath first which I'm actually dreading

Well after 3 years I've finally painted up one of my FW Sanguinius models. I ordered both the normal and special version with the diorama base back in Mar 29, 2019 and I spent the last 2 weeks painting up the regular version. My first FW primarch and I'm amazed at the amount of detail they've crammed into a resin model. Think I'll wait for another 3 years before doing the up other version with diorama base.

Anyhow...onto the pictures:

I've also managed to order one of the solar powered rotating display bases from ebay and found it works quite nicely in my display case with the LEDs turned on. Managed to get a decent phone video of it here:

Thanks Viterbi! I fussed over the gold armour for a long time before starting not being able to decide between TMM or NMM for the gold. Glad I went the TMM route...might save the NMM for the other version with the demon base.

tauist wrote:Always felt like your army needed a Sanguinius! Nicely done sir

Yes definitely will be adding the new MK6 beakies to the backlog. They will go nicely with the still to be painted MK3 and MK4 marines from the previous 2 boxsets

Think I might try to do a big batch paintjob of all of them at some point this year just to clear them off my list. I'll be sure to document the process when it comes up!

Still plugging away at my first born backlog and have been making some decent progress over the past month. A few more years and I'll finally be able to start on the Primaris!

First up is one of the OG terminator librarians. I've got a few old school models with the banner pole but no banner sticker. I understand the older models came with stickers that you can put on them and they were pre-printed. I ended up just painting up the models without any banners for now until the day I can get some banner references sized and printed out.

Next we have one of the last Terminator Librarians GW has produced that isn't a Primaris model now. I think he was meant to be an Adepticon special before COVID came along and cancelled all those plans. Got him as a MTO model from GW and happy with how he came out. I like to include at least one skull on all the bases of my HQ models and the great thing about him is he came with one pre-molded into the scenic base already!

Finally we have Captain Karlaen from the Deathstorm boxset who I finally painted up. Been so long that I'm no longer able to find named character rules for him so I suppose GW has put him as a regular terminator captain in the current edition.

Last we have the Baal Predator. This one is one from maybe 4th or 5ed edition which was made around 2003. Has the metal assault cannon, side flamer sponsons and BA gunner head bits and pre-dates the current full plastic kit. Now if I can only track down a 2nd edition Baal Predator to paint up my Baal Predator collection will be complete!

Spent the last 2 weeks working on and off of the Space Marine Heroes Series 1. Imported these from Japan when they were first released (thanks to someone on a FB group) and had them shipped over. They were quite cool as it came in a cardboard rhino box and had 2 sets of all of the models so no need to try and do the blind box pulls. I also have the Captain model that came separately which I'll paint at a later date.

First off, here is the group shot of all 12:

Tried to do more of a speed painting for these guys since they're just a tactical squad though I did end up putting a bit more time and effort on the smaller details given how unique they are in posing. These models were apparently the start of the "scaling up" of the regular Space Marines back in the day which eventually lead to the bigger deathwatch models and eventually the Primaris models.

Normally I prefer to use helms on my tac models (no SM would want to get headshotted) but since theses were all named characters, I decided to go with the bare heads on the whole lot. Took more effort to paint so many bare faces but the end result was worth it. I also kept each model completely stock which meant I couldn't use the Blood Angel molded should pads and this was the first time in awhile working with so many shoulder decals but it worked out well in the end with a bit of selective cutting of the decal to help with setting on the round shoulder pauldrons and the use of MicroSol to during the application. Also of these models also got my custom modeled and resin printed base name plates using my standard schemes of silver for normal models and gold for captains/HQs.

Individual model shots:

Thanks Gits! Yeah these guys used to be a Japan exclusive (think the idea of blind boxes are more popular there) and they eventually brought them to North America though in a smaller release with I think only 8 out of the original 13 models. I think Series 2 (SM Terminators) and Series 3 (CSM Plaguemarines) saw worldwide releases. Overall these weren't too popular as most people moved onto Primaris stuff by then but I'm just glad to have these in my collection for completeness sake

Update for the month of June:

Many years ago, I had painted my FW Chaplain dreadnought not knowing it was support to be a chaplain so it was done up in regular blood red colours. After finding out he should have been black, I took some time a few weeks ago to repaint the red parts in black and add new decals. Here's how he turned out:

Work for this month was to finish off a 10 man squad of Terminators I had primed and ready for a while now. These will be added to the 20 other terminators I painted earlier this year:

and the Ancient in terminator armour:

Got an order in for Age of Darkness along with the new deimos rhino and kratos assault tank. Can't wait till those show up!

My Age of Darkness boxset finally arrived along with a demios rhino and the kratos battle tank. Spent the last few evenings assembling the Spartan, Demios and Kratos. Love the way the new kits come together and how easy plastic is to work with compared to FW resin.

The Spartan tank kit seems to come with different sized doors - at least my FW land raider doors for the BA doesn't fit very well inside. Since the stock doors are quite bland and I don't want to utilize the iconography that's included with the kit, I decided to 3d design and print my own. Digitally kitbashed the doors along with a BA icon for the front door which came out very well:

Still need to do a design for the Demios Rhino side doors as I don't like the look of the FW version - that was the only FW BA door I didn't buy last time I was at Warhammer World as the design makes no sense to me...the icon literally prevents the doors from opening:

Progress report for July! Got some free time this week to work on and finish off the old sternguard veteran squad plastic kit that was put out many years ago. Had these built up and sitting around waiting for paint for years. These definitely took longer than usual given the amount of iconography and flourish bits all over their armor but I'm quite pleased with how it all turned out:

Squad 1:

Squad 2:

Emperor's bowls but these are good!

Astonishing paintjobs. Great squads. Lovely lovely! I take it an airbrush was involved for the basecoats?

Thanks osjclatchford! Appreciate the kind words and yes, I do use an airbrush for priming, basecoats and some detailed shading/highlights as well.

With all the HH models coming out, it's renewed my interest in painting up what I have built up in my collection. Switched gears from infantry to walkers was definitely a good change as I found these more enjoyable and "faster" for painting. Just finished up the deredero and contemptor dreads:

Superb job on them dreads squire! Your Deredeo loadout is exactly the same as what I've planned for mine, your work will certainly be my definite reference going forward.

Also digging that contemptor, dual HB loadout looks surprisingly decent, especially with that head you have chosen.

All in all, impeccable paintjobs all round. Kudos!

Thanks Stevefamine! It's actually TMM that I do with all my paintjobs though I do shade it with inks through my airbrush.

Thanks tauist! The Deredeo was great fun to paint up and looked better with a paintjob than I was expecting. Lots of dakka!

Ha not quite...I'm sticking with BA for life as I've got more than enough to paint in my lifetime without straying off to another faction

The nid is actually a throwback to one of my original dreads that I painted years ago:
Spoiler:

Figured it's fitting since nids are BA are the defining enemies from the fluff. Look out for more dead nids in my bases in the future!

Thanks Olthannon! Yeah it was from the old venerable dread kit. Most people build it with the front face plate but I loved seeing the interior details they modelled with the space marine so I painted it without the front plate and a bare "terminator" head to add to the overall look.

It's been awhile! Ran out of steam for painting after Aug 2022 but did start up again this year. Just got around to taking some batch photos and here they are in order of completion:

Jan '23

Relic Contemptor Dreadnought - Converted from Emperor's Children dread with BA plastic dread talons.

Feb '23

Leviathan Siege Dreadnought - This is the old FW resin kit. Still have a newer plastic kit in my backlog.

Relic Contemptor Dreadnought - This guy I actually bought from Warhammer World during my last visit back in 2018

Captain Thassarius - This is the last model from my Space Marines Heroes Season 1 collection that I had purchased and shipped over from Japan.

Death Company Contemptor Dreadnought - Converted from the Iron Warriors contemptor.

Terminator Chaplain Tarentus

Terminator Chaplain Bephael

March '23

Vintage Metal SM Captain

Captain Leonatos - this is actually a very rare model from Black Library. Managed to snag this from ebay though it was missing the head and backpack which I had to kitbash from other bits in my collection. Tried to match the original as close as possible though still keeping my eye out for a complete set for the future.

Death Company Leviathan Dreadnought - My other FW resin leviathan. Wanted to do a different colour scheme for this one and even though I don't think Death Company wasn't a thing in the heresy, will just have to assume this guy is still around for 40k. Also spent quite a bit of time on this guy doing a skull face painted helm which turned out better than I had anticipated.

That's all for now. Current painted collection is sitting at 506 models and ~38k points. Depending on when I hit 40k points, I might spend a day getting everything out of storage cases/display cases for another army shot soon!

Incredible as always, but both the Death Company dreads are highlights for me! The Contemptor just looks brutal and the skull helm on the Leviathan had me fooled that you'd used a Chaplain helmet until I looked closer at the writeup!

Top work on the older metals too, you've kept them looking very up-to-date despite the age of the sculpts!

Heya Tom! Thanks for stopping by! It has been a good long while. I've had various hobby ADHD over the years but painting and my BA army is one I come back to time and time again. My painting motivation comes in waves and some years have been good and some slow but I think I will be sticking to this for as long as I can hold a brush. I still haven't gotten to painting my Primaris marines yet and now GW is going about getting rid of the Primaris type . Hope you and the fam are doing well too!

It's been awhile since my last post and I figured it would be good to do an update before the year ends.

New models painted since my last pictures posted in March:

Captain Verono (Limited Edition Web Exclusive model)

Captain Acrion

Captain Tobius

Captain Olus

Captain Lorenz

Retro Combat Squad

Retro Assault Squad

Space Marine Heroes Series 2 Terminator Squad

Captain Donato (Space Marine Heroes Series 2)

Death Company

Mk3 Squad

Mk4 Squad

Mk6 Squad

Cataphractii Terminator Squad

And finally the last model completed of the year...a new in box Rogue Trader era Mk1 Rhino I found on FB marketplace:

This is somewhat of a year in review post as 2023 turned out to be a good year in terms of painting progress. Did manage to stay busy throughout and finished painting 80 models in total (approx. 3500 pts)! Based on this, my painted collection of models now sits just above 40k points - 40,213 pts based on 8th ed point calcs as I've been too lazy to update my Notion database for tracking the collection. Still have plenty to go and am hoping the SM releases slows down a bit next year for me to catch up from my backlog.

Anyhow, hope everyone has a happy holidays and New Year!

Thanks muette! Yes, this has been my most productive year since I've been tracking the numbers. I've got a really efficient workflow now with my colour scheme where I can crank them out fairly quickly.

Really loving those retro marines mate. "Captain Tobius" was one of the first minis I ever painted as a kid - big nostalgia vibes from him and the other metal marines.

The red armour is just gorgeous, and I'm always impressed when people can replicate that effect on the larger scale of vehicles.

The blue power weapons/plasma really pop against he dark scheme and the cloths/capes are lovely too.

Great work mate - happy new year 8-)

Thanks tzurk! Yes, Tobius has been one of my favourite paint jobs from the older range. Going through all the older models now also gave me a good nostalgia hit as well and I've got a few ebay alerts setup now to hopefully complete the whole 2nd ed range eventually. More for the backlog!
