I don't think I was expecting a Defiler Variant for the "Daemon Engine".
While I'm sure it makes financial sense (using existing parts and all that), I'm still somewhat disappointed...

That's like, halfway cool.
I mean, I see the daemon part and really like it, then my eye travels down to the Defiler chassis, and that big Defiler claw, and I feel sort of... meh. If this were a conversion by a gamer, I'd be very impressed. As an offering from the corporation, I am underwhelmed.

I must say that I'm underwhelmed by this one. I was expecting something with more guns than just an (apparent) pea-shooter on one arm.
Also, the fact that it's a normal defiler right up until the upright torso somewhat bugs me too.

Cool, it looks like it takes the four legs and chassis of the defiler and uses this new sprue.
My guess is that it will be cheaper then the actual defiler, maybe 35-45?

However, its my understanding the rest of the list is demons, hence a demon engine isn't as appropriate. On the positive my Shaggoths look like they'll work fine as stand in soulgrinders.

But this is an unbound Defiler, one that has escaped the shackles of its metal body, and headed back into the Warp to be away from the Marines that enslaved it.

bizarre - the bottom half is apparently just a slightly recut defiler with 6 legs and a few extra spikes.
the top half will certainly make a great demon prince conversion, if you can find some suitable legs. And I can see some people converting into into a standard defiler, although getting that big boy to hold a battlecannon might be a challenge

Each half of that sculpt look good, but when you join the 2 of them without much transitional area, it just looks like a conversion someone did without much though.
It'll make a bangin' Iron Warriors prince with some modification (size reduction), though. I see one of these with just 2 legs (hacked to be digitigrade), or on 4 legs hacked to be more horselike for a centaur thingy, or on sentinel legs with Defiler pads.
Not into the subtle guns either, though.

The current Defiler builds into a very nice Spider and a very decent Knight. It's a crappy Centaur, and a non-starter Tank.

The Soulgrinder sprue is out, for the new forelegs and upper torso. The lower hull and rear 4 legs are carried over intact. There's no recut at all, just a sprue swap.

Slanni Trannie... ROFL. Please, let's all refuse to refer to that model by any other name.
The deamonette plastics aren't as bad as I thought they were, upon second glance. They just don't have the awesome dancing poses that the last (er, current) edition models do.
And on a side note, that Autarch bust is amazing. If FW want a big money-maker, they'd buy that puppy and cast it up pronto.
EDIT: Upon reviewing Gary Morley's site, I was surprised at how many minis that I _like_ were sculpted by his hand. I guess his record may be better than I had thought. And lest I seem too mushy, I am hoping that the current round of GW ship-jumping pulls the Morrisons along with it, too. A few decent sculpts do not make up for a vast swathe of terribly distorted proportions, buck-toothed daemons, and ridiculous poses.

Did you just ask for a LOGICAL reason why:
1) A Daemon machine thingy could exist without the presence of Chaos Marines and
2) GW would put something out there that potentially might not make much sense?

It's not taking a heavy weapon unless you have at least 10 men in your squad lest you violate the Chaos Codex Astartes (which is just like the regular Codex Astartes except it is renegade and stuff so it has horns but it doesn't have rending). Panic wrote:Because with out marines about to have bound him to a defiler , and then he breaks out, I really don't see where all the machinery bits are coming from?
Me neither. I can think of a few explanations though. One possibility is that GW plans to release an entire line of Possessed Vehicles Gone Wild. In future editions we may see new sprues for use with the Predator, Vindicator, Land Raider, and Rhino kits to create the entire menagerie of daemonic vehicles. By 7th edition you will be able to transport your titless daemonettes around the battlefield in style with unbound possessed Rhinos (a.k.a. Soul Guzzlers)! Another possibility is that Codex: Chaos Daemons will include some new fluff to explain what the hell a Soul Grinder is doing in a daemon army. Like maybe, in the waning days of the 13th Black Crusade, Sarth Didious, King of the Defilers, betrays Abaddon and executes Order 666 which causes all the Defilers on Cadia to go apeshit and join the Chaos Daemons (which are a separate army from the Chaos Space Marines). Which ties in to... ...the last possibility - that they're releasing the Soul Grinder to test the waters in anticipation of Codex: Defiler Kingdoms (tentative 6th edition release). Much like how daemons were taken out of C: CSM and made into their own army, Defilers and Soul Grinders would be spun off to create Defiler Kingdoms. GW would then release more sprues for use with the Defiler kit, allowing us to create all the myriad types of Defiler. Expect sprues to make Khorne Defilers, Slaanesh Defilers, Nurgle Command Defilers on Palanquin, Fat Defilers, Female Defilers, Ninja Defilers (direct only), Pirate Defilers, Out-of-Gas Defilers, and Pegasus Defilers (Defilers riding Pegasuses). The LatD will also be re-imagined and will appear in altered form as the Gnob Gobblers, the diminutive mutant helpers of the Defiler Kingdom army. Sarth Didious will appear as a special character.
