Beautiful! Great painting, and love the conversion work on the oblit. Particularly like the head and how you've smoothed out all that messy skin on the arms and cleaned up the back.

I'll be watching, this is already looking great

Very nice, clean colour scheme. The obliterator looks especially good and is very thousand-sons whilst still clearly an obliterator.

I'm also adding some thousand sons to my CSM soon... and a defiler. so i'll be watching your blog with interest.

Also i always hated the standard defiler model, and I look forward to seeing how your 'knight' defiler turns out.
Does any one have a link to a completed 'knight' defiler... could you PM me...
any views on if they better/worse in games?

Man, do your oblits look good.

Are you putting any 1KSons bling on the posessed? You've done so much theming elsewhere, they seem unSon-ed by contrast.

<3 across the board, particularly for the defiler. Great conversion, that one. Dig the legs on the 2 rubrics and the fantasy AS, spicing it up.

The ushabti prince, while definitely cool, strikes me as awfully "alien friend" (think ET) with the non-threatening pose and funky hand. BUT I like and would appreciate another angle of it, the low-angle shot I think is messing with me. And his non-threatening pose is clearly casting something spooky / weaving your doom type stuff, which I can dig.

Thanks for the shots, solid chop job on the genestealer arm. The dude looks to be leaning back a bit, though again I might just be crazy OR you meant for him to be doing thusly. Awesome. Your style is very painterly. I dig it.

I especially like your palette choices. I know the Thousands Sons colors are already set, but I think the actual shades of blue and gold you went with work really well, and the colors you use on the weapons add great contrast that doesn't detract from the model.

Very cool.

I concur with Salvage, the very first thing my eyes stopped on was the red picked out on the bolter barrel, and though I can't really explain why (never been a master of art theory and color wheel whoseywhatsits) I really, really like it. Coupled with the bit of detail on the belt/stomach picked out in the red, it really really looks great. All your stuff looks killer so far, keep it up!

I'm going to disagree here. I know what you're saying, and I don't think it would make it look bad or anything. In some ways, it would be the logical thing to do.

But I think that the paint job really works as is. It's got a look to it that I can only describe as painterly, and it's something I don't really see often on miniatures. In this case, I think it works really well. I feel like that at this point, this army has somewhat of a unique, artsy style that sets it apart from a lot of other armies. I feel like another level of highlights would just make look like one of the many other well-painted armies out there, and some of the stylistic uniqueness it currently has could be lost.

I think that would be a shame.

But please, keep up the good work!

your painting is immaculate as are your modelling skills, nice work. The only thing I don't like is the NMM, but I don't like any NMM as it never looks like metal.

I especially love the rhino, thats some nice work and really fits in with their design well (I never spiked up my rhino's for the Thousand Sons either, they always seemed the "classiest" of Chaos cults to me).

the yellow is strong. I usually wait until like now when you tell me though. Commenting on NMM sometimes is like asking a larger woman when she's due. You either get an answer (or in our case, "it's supposed to be yellow"), or you get your nose smashed in because she was only a little fat (or "it's not yellow, it NMM gold! duh!)

but I wasnt sure if the bolter casings were supposed to be NMM or just a cold grey.

Heres my tzeentch deamon prince that i am making. I used the LOC wings which are alittle bigger than the pegasus' although if your using the gw deamon prince model they will prabably be to small still.

so here he is in all his unfinished glory

here are some new painted models:
first up is the sorc for the second squad, not finished though:

yeh, i bought mine back when bitz ordering was still around, i just got the wings and staff.

love the new stuff. 2 questions

how did you do the robes on the rubric marines?

and how did you do the white on the sorceror?

can't wait to see more.

On this page download the 'Citadel bitz catalogue'

Unless im very much mistaken Lord of change wings are one of the few bits still available, I think they cost about £8.

Please don't compromise this project, it is looking really great so far!

Thx guys

ive seen you can still order the wings seperatly, so i might do that.

tylermenz wrote:

the robes on the rubrics are a layer of white, followed by a mix of skull white and a tiny bit of regal blue(its actually the light blue colour you can see on the robes), and then finish it by layering the robe till it gets the nice white colour(just water down the white and youll be fine)

and the Sorcerer is actually the same, only the signs are washed with the new blue wash, and then the details were picked out after that with skull white.

Not too far from my stomping grounds ... :S

Dig the white robed rubrics, and the new AS is impressive already. On the dread, I think I like the horror arm better than I like the extended ankles. Or more specifically, I like the random horror arm and I don't like the ankles. Just look so thin. Though I understand why you lengthened them - when I was building my second AL dread last week I was a little non-plussed at how the legs sit right on the feet, almost no gap after nipping the tag off the ankles.

The runic symbols on the marines and the detail on the sorcerer is fantastic.

Yes it's simple,
but highly effective.
I'm really glad you didn't go overboard because it would have cluttered the paint job.

This whole project is coming out very well,
Always looking for more updates on this one,

man i really digg the more artistic style to the way you are painting these thousand sons . In fact they gave me the inspiration to finally finish painting my friends possessed marines that i was doing as a favor to him and since he has quite a tzeentchy army to start with i think these will be perfect as apposed to painting them similar to the box art.

So, you have a horror army lying around that you no longer want sticking out of his exhaust.
I understand that. I agree.

I noticed that there's also a hole in the "stone" of his base. Why not have the arm sticking out of that?

that forgeworld dread is very nice, well done.

i like the rhino a lot too, i have a "good guy" rhino conversion that has the same lifted canopy going on, but mine will end up as a whirlwind with all the missiles stored internally in what used to be the crew compartment, then little doors opening on the roof like a nuke missile submarine.

using the little pointy bits on each side as little structural details is really nice, and i will definately be copying that (if i can find that bit)

my only criticism is with the left hands on the 2 Rubs. The top one looks to be holding some sort of grenadery, which makes sense, although the way he is holding them is kind of vana white-ish. i cant figure out what is going on in the 2nd dudes left hand. it looks like he has a microphone or something.

loving the sorceror, and as allways, lovin the rubics, gotta teach me to paint like that

als, just as an idea since your painting and converting is allready ace.
ever though about bringing a unit of ushabti into your army?
could use em as tooled up chosen, or as termies.
easy enogh to convert weapons on them, and with the way they look counting them as having lightning claws isnt far fetched atall, and you then get to add something other than the basic TS units.
and they look great

well for Tau, there is one colour scheme i like, and that is this one on the cover of an white dwarf. its dark red for the fatigue and bone for the armour.
http://oz.games-workshop.com/whitedwarf/issues/WD318/cover.jpg

but if i had to choose i would go for the red tiger camo, btw is the camo all over the models?

red tiger armour, and i might do black clothing with a deep red hint.

I'm just now seeing this Blog and WOW.

Your painting style is very crisp and clean and bold, it's exactly the style I aspire to become good at. I'm slightly Bias as yellow and blue are my fav color scheme from back when I played the TTG Warzone and had a Bauhaus army, which then Carried over to my Iyanden Eldar.

Incredible work Dev, look foward to seeing more, and like Sphynx I would be interested to see any kind of step by step you can do on painting.

I know you and I know what you can do, as good as your thousand sons were (amazing!) Dev, i think you need an army that can really challenge your painting, a style almost an opposit to yours.

i would suggest something like orks or eldar.

i like the strong highlights, they look very good with the theme of the army.

Well since TS have no flesh and are only really armor I would suggest tyranids because they are completely living no armor or guns.
My second suggestion would be Daemons of chaos because they are really hard to paint

Seen your thread a while ago, and didn't comment then. As someone starting a tzeentch themed army now, I just wanted to say you excellent work! Your army is inspiring and when I decided to do my tzeentch theme, I went searching for this thread for inspiration. i must have done it jsut a day or so before you posted that awesome prince!

Anyway, just wanted to throw in my praise along with all of it that has already filled the thread. It is VERY hard not to steal all your ideas and just copy everything! LOL. Good Luck in the GT!

all is dust!

literaly!

Decided to make a new 1700 pt tournie list.

I am going to throw the lesser daemons out of the list, and replace them with a 3rd Rhino and a 2nd daemon Prince

here is the start of that 3rd rhino, going to add more plasticcard to it and also a dozer blade:

As you can see its heightened just as the other rhinos and will be painted and decorated just as the previous ones.

tomorrow I will buy a new prince and gonna start converting it

So I will keep you updated the next couple of weeks

You've made me feel so ashamed of my own thousand sons :(... Well done! Those extreme highlights work so well with the blue. My favourite bit you've done is the horror arm coming out of the dread's powerplant

What kind of paints do you use to get that yellow colour btw? It's a pain to paint half decent yellow, but yours looks great. What's yer secret?

Thousand sons log by Develain @ 2010/08/15 19:39:52

Lol.

I keep getting so much questions about the yellow.

It's actually fairly easy. It is a basecoat of Tausept ochre highlighted with Golden Yellow, and the rivits are shaded with vermin brown and the rivits are then painted white.

Hope this helps.

P.S: I noticed I never made a close up picture of the second rhino. gonna make it tonight and post it

Love the rhino!
I wish I was a follower of the dark gods sometimes. They have such lovely detailing and I like eeeeeeeevil. But I sold my chaos marines for 5 pound each - an offer I couldn't refuse

About the turret: its a missle launcher from a dreadnought with the missile rack left off and bolter added in its place:

did some plastic card detailng on it to make it look more chaos - ish:

and i made picture of the other side if anyone is interested:

The Ushabti daemon never got finished, nor the Possessed. I went for a complete Thousand sons army, which turned out to work great, exept against Ork horde armies.

Soo I managed to get some paint on the last Rhino

Got a few things left to finish, but its a good impression(sorry for the bad lighting):

And I made a start on the 2nd Daemon Prince:

Last but not least, I made an Icon for the 3rd squad of Thousand sons:

The Dutch Grand Tournament is in 3 weeks, so I kinda have to hurry.

Updates will follow.
