Cadaver's Death Guard @ 2008/03/24 08:09:35

Post by: Starfarer

Hello DakkaDakka,

The name's Cadaver. I post regularly on Tau Online, Warseer and Bolter and Chainsword. As my Death guard army expands I've been coming to new sites to chronicle my work. DakkaDakka has quite the reputation from what I understand so I thought I post my stuff and see if you 'ard lot would be willing to give me your worst.

This first post is just going to be a compilation of my current work to this point. I'll try and date the posts as best I can and just ignore any response posts that are combined with update posts.

October 3rd
I have finally received all my bits and have started work on my Death Guard army. I finished the first and probably largest portion of my army, the plague marines. Here are 35 of them almost ready for painting. I need to do some minor sculpting work on some but they are done for the most part.

The back packs I haven't started yet, actually. I need to order a few more and then I will get to work on those. They will have lots of banners and trophies and nearly every backpack will have some sort of conversion to it.

A few of my aspiring Champions. These three are the most heavily converted. The other two weren't really changed all that much.

Here are a few group shots of the standard plague marines. All the models have been pinned at the arms. Those pictured without arms will be fully assembled after painting.

Next up will be the backpacks and then I will get to work on my Terminators who will all be extensively converted with alternate heads, Typhus-style vents and bloated torsos.

October 8th

I started on the first of the terminator squad today. I made the mistake of adding greenstuff on too many areas at once and accidently ruined the detail a number of times on certain areas. I think I fixed it to where it looks OK but not as good as it originally did. The vents are not finished. I should've waited to add those later but I didn't want the GS to go to waste. Detail will be added to them once they dry.

Shoulderpads:

Front shot:

Side shot:

The Lord is progressing much more slowly since I'm waiting on my battlewagon bits order to arrive. I have started work on the torso and the head. The legs are not the ones being used and are simply there to stand the model upright.

October 18th

I've been working on quite few things for my Death Guard force and at this pace I should have my whole army finished within a few weeks.

I finished all the backpacks for my plaguemarines. This was a tedious task and I'm glad its done but I think the results were worth the effort. Nearly every backpack has some sort of conversion to it.

The whole group:

Here's another Terminator I've been working on. The vents still need greenstuff and I've come up with a quicker way to do this so hopefully I'll have all my Terminators done shortly.

I've also finished my Obliterators. I'm very pleased with how these turned out. I spent awhile deciding on different head options since I really do not like the standard ones. I opted to use heavily converted Kharn heads since I had an excess of them lying around. I'm not really a fan off having the mishmash of weapons on the obliterators so I tried to give them the look of forming into a specific weapon. The extra weapon slots were filled and sculpted with greenstuff.

November 28th

It's been awhile since I've had an update but I've got my terminators about 90% done. They've been assembled and the basics of the bases are done. I need to add vents to their backs and finish texturing the bases before painting. I'll be getting to work on the Land raider, Predator and some heavily converted Chosen pretty soon.

Sorry for the bad pics, I'll try and get some better ones once they're 100% finished and there is daylight.

I've been working on my Land Raider over the weekend but it's taking longer than expected. The results so far I think are pretty good. I need to do alot more to get it finished, mostly just greenstuff and the tank commander. I've got a few WIP shots so any comments are criticisms would be helpful at this stage since I can still rework pretty much any areas I need to.

I've gotten a bit more work done on the land raider. I ran out of greenstuff and had to go pick some more up today to finish it. As it stands, I'd say it's about 90% done. I need to finish the tank commander and add a a little more decay on the armor. Sorry again for the crappy photos. I always seem to be taking pictures at night.

Now that the holidays are over I finally had some time to get a bit of painting done. I've almost finished my first plague marine. The eyes and trophy rack need to be painted but other than that this guy is finished. The painting is a bit rough but I'm happy with it overall since this is the first model I've painted in a few months. Once I get the color scheme down I should start getting smoother transitions in the blending but I think it's ok for tabletop standard.

C&C appreciated.

It's been awhile since I've had an update of any conversion work but I've made some progress on a predator I had assembled but hadn't added nurgle goodness to until today. I'm particularly happy with the vents which I just added at the last minute before doing greenstuff work. I have a second predator that I will do the same to. I also have ordered turret bits so I can change from lascannon to autocannon depending on what I want to field.

As it stands this is about 45% done. I wanted to let the greenstuff dry before working on the other side. I have a habit of smudging the greenstuff with my fingers if I do too much work all at once.

I got a bit more work done on the pred. Here's a few more pics:

Well I decided to just drink some beer and watch a movie tonight instead of working on the army. So this is a pretty weak update but an update nonetheless. Just a little work I did yesterday.

A bit more green stuff work on the Predator, which is almost done now.

The early start of the vents for the termies. You can see the rest of the vents that I already cut on the left.

Another minor update. I've been working on a few different units so each is progressing a little slowly but I should get alot more done tomorrow.

So I added some finishing touches to the predator and this one is finished other than the second turret which should be on it's way shortly.

Nothing you havent' seen before. Just a few more patches of greenstuff but this is the finished product.

I got the vents done on 12 of my 14 assembled termies. I have another 7 that need to be comepletely assembled bringing the total to 21. Hopefully the greenstuff work won't take too long on these and I will be able to finish them tomorrow.

I added vents to the landraider a little while ago. I'll add the greenstuff to them soon, just need to wait for the glue to dry completely.

I've also finished the greenstuff work on the Terminator vents. I just need to finish basing these guys and they'll be finished.

Some closeups:

I hope to finish up the DP soon and after that I think I'll get some painting done while I wait on my new models to arrive. If I don't get too distracted I can hopefully get most of the current plague marines painted in the next week or so. We'll see what happens, painting takes me much longer than assembling and converting.

The pics are kinda bad but here's the 2 new models mostly finished. The backpack icon on the left one was painted after the picture was taken, so that model is now complete. The other need the eyes painted which I forgot to do before taking the pictures. I will probably work a little more on the bolters, which I just decided to change from red to brown.

I also made a few Icon bearers from my terminator squads. I still need to add the vents and Greenstuff some more on these two.

Finished the first squad of seven.

I've been slacking a bit on the updates but I've been working alot on stuff.

I finished the second squad of plague marines earlier this week. The only thing I need to do is paint the rims of their bases. One thing you may notice is I changed the color of the skin to have an undead look. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. Now I have to go back an update the other squad to match.

Group shot:

Aspiring Champion and some cronies:

Plasmagunners:

The guy on the end who couldn't fit in the other photos:

The other project I've been working on is a fairly extensive kit bash of a defiler and WFHB Giant. I started working on it with just a few basic plans so what you see here is just the very early work of things I knew I wanted to do. The giant's torso as the turret with the battlecannon coming out of his stomach. The cannon has a dragon skull that was taken off a club from the giant sprue. I added chains to replace the leather straps that were part of the bit. I decided that I want to have this guy fully customizable so I ordered some magnets and some extra bits so I will be able to change from an all CC defiler to a shooty one or a mix of both. His hands will be dreadnought CC weapons for the CC layout and the guns will be converted on his arms as well. Since there are two sets of arms in the giant kit this is where I will magnetize him, which I think will look pretty awesome once it's done.

C&C welcome as always.

Here's a few pics of the Chosen as promised.

Aspiring Champ:

Icon Bearer:

And the rest of the unit:

As with all my infantry they'll be fully assembled after painting. I still plan to add quite a few more Chosen to the army but I want to get these guys painted before building any more.

C&C welcome as always.

The bits I needed for my defiler conversion finally arrived today. I got a good amount of work done but there's still alot to go. I've put the legs on again to show roughly what it will look like completed but the stance isn't what I'm going for on the finished product. I'm still debating what to use for the base. CDs seem to be the cheapest way but they are slightly too small to fit the whole model on it. I may get some cork tile to extent the size so all the legs fit on the base. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Enough of my rambling, here's the pics.

This arm is magnetized and I'll be converting an arm to hold a twin linked autocannon so I can switch between full CC and a little extra dakka. I was thinking about magnetizing the head as well and having one head with a heavy flamer sticking out of the mouth. I still need to play around with the bits and see if I can make it work but I thought it might be pretty cool.

I put claws on the dreadnought CCWs but I didn't like the look all that much so they've since been removed. Here's a pic of what they looked like before any greenstuff was used to smooth them out and blend the lines seamlessly with the fingers.

As for the rest of the model, I've finished most of the greenstuff work on the main defiler body but the giant torso still needs a good bit of work to go. I'm working from the back forward so the cannon should be added soon once all the greenstuff on the back is complete. I've also added vents to the back to match those on my tanks.

I didn't get very many good pics but I should have some better ones up soon.

I've just about finished up the defiler. There's a little more greenstuff work to be done and some minor detail bits to be added and then I also need to build a base for it.

I've made a little more progress on the daemon prince as well but the idea I had for the head didn't turn out as well as I had planned. At this point I think I'm just going to have to sculpt one myself to get it to my liking. Hopefully I'll have some pics of that up soon.

The defiler:

Some more pics:

March 20th

Ahoy! I'm back with a few updates. I finally got hold of some cork tile to make my defiler base and have built the basic design and set the legs in their final pose. I just need to add a few finishing touches to both the model and the base and it will be done. About time too.

This is the sludge stream that runs through the base. It's been filled with hotglue but will get some water effects once it's painted.

I've also stripped and rebuild to SM rhinos that are now in the service of the Dark gods. They have converted pintle mounted combi-meltas for a little trouble making after they drop off the kids at school. They got the vents to match the other tanks and tie all the vehicles together. I've got three more of these to strip and rebuild.

I'm also in the very early stages of planning my plaguereaper baneblade. It's going to be the most extensive project I've ever built by far and probably will make the defiler look like a walk in the park to build. The project in going to put the total cost in the range of a ForgeWorld baneblade to give you and idea of how many kits and various bits are being used. Expect some teaser pics in a few weeks.

March 24th

I've been working on finishing up the daemon prince and defiler. I spent a good deal of time today reorganizing all my bitz into some new containers which should save me time digging through boxes. After looking over some old White Dwarf articles featuring Dave Taylor's work I had the idea to recreate the new nurgle head from the CSM box into a DP size head. I've done the sculpting for the basic shape so far and need to clean it up a bit but I wanted to get some feedback before a continued on with it. I also pinned the arms and did the base minus the extra detail work.

The defiler has been upgraded with extra spikes and chains as well as some more vents on the back. A little more greenstuff has been done on the body and I pretty much just need to finish the head. I've become indecisive about it so I'll probably convert thre different heads and ask for feedback on which one looks best. After spending all this time on it I want it to look "perfect."

Comments and criticism are most welcome.

Utterly inspiring, especially since death guard are my favourite Chaos force too. Your green stuff usage is perfect - looks great and in just the right amounts so as not to overpower the models. I love the attention to detail and especially love the spine on the defiler. I cant wait to see those tanks painted as well!

If I could think of anything at all to comment on, perhaps a very light wash (with some brown and green in it) over the drybrushed green on the painted troops to tone down the drybrush fuzz and make it look more sickly? Also the obliterator is mounted on a cookie

Very warm welcome to dakka!

That's an inspiring sight! The conversion work is very fitting and I really like the ambition.

I think the painting lacks some of the flair of the conversion work and could benefit from more definition. I would wash it with streaks of flowing yellows, purples and browns and use a boneish shade to pick up some of the edges.

I also think the GS nurgleness could benefit from gluing some modelings sand particles here and there on and around it to represent un punctured pustules.

The Defiler is the coolest of them all IMO. Some annoying flahs is still visible on the spine for example, but that thing looks so gorgeous anyway.

So really - top notch work and looking forward to more.

Truly impressive conversion work from you, and a heart welcome to dakka from me. The vent work on the vehicles and on the termies is probably my single favorite theme of yours, though the kharne-headed oblits come second. Solid work on the backpacks too, I kinda loathe cleaning and converting them myself, but it is worth the effort.

But let me give you even more props for the vehicles, each one is a real beast with all the GS and vents and such. The defiler is, as noted, totally nuts

Hmm... I bought the parts for a Deathguard army a few weeks back. Haven't gotten around to putting anything together yet.

One question though, as I have virtually no experience with green stuff: How do you do that bubbley fungus rot stuff on the hulls of the vehicles? Is it just a layer of greenstuff with holes poked in it, or is there more to it?

Damn...that's an incredible collection of conversions - your WIP pics are terrific for anyone considering building a DG army. I love your use of Fantasy bits - particularly the head from the Mounted Nurgle Lord. And that Defiler! I can't describe how impressed I am at the use of the plastic Giant in that conversion.

Thanks for all the suggestions and comments so far. As for the painting suggestions I'll be trying out a few things but with so much to paint I want to keep the scheme fairly simple and not spend 4+ hours on each mini. I am getting 20 FW death guard marines pretty soon, so I may take the time to paint them to a higher standard.

Mine locked up when I initially had it all as one post so I split it into two and I haven't had any problems. Thanks for the heads up though.

The greenstuff on flast surfaces is really easy and doesn't require any special sculpting tools. I flatten out a piece and press in firmly on the vehicle and stretch the edges with the point of a toothpick. If there are no puss bubbles I poke several random holes with a large paperclip. Then I poke smaller holes with the end of the toothpick. Finally I take the inner wire of a guitar string and add the tiny holes all around the piece of GS. It's pretty simple, and once you get it down it only takes a minute or so to do each patch.

Great work Cadaver, I cannot wait to see how the defiler and other vehicles look once they are painted. Are those old Deathguard Marines rogue trader era or just classic? Very inspiring to someone like me who's been planning a DG army! Very stunning, hurry up and update, please!

yeah...
This army looks great. i can't wait for more installments in this blog.
especially more (close up) pictures of your terminators, as they get painted, I've planned april as my month of nurgles terminator painting (FW allowing).

The defiler looks awesome, I really hope that the new codex demons allows Soulgrinder cross over into Codex CSM, that way you could use that guy as either a normal or a unbound defiler....

man it's army like this! this that makes me want more and more stuff in my army!

Yeah, I guess you missed it towards the bottom. I've just ordered a banblade, a VC battalion and and Ork battleforce for Apocalypse craziness. I'll be making a plaguereaper, mutants/mutie orks(haven't decided if it will be a full army or not)and plaguezombies.

I'm currently at work painting the first of the rhinos. I want to get the first one finished before I show it so I can get feedback on the finished product.

Post by: Starfarer

Well I lied. I added some WIP pics.

I've been working on painting a rhino and after some thought I decided to take the advice of everyone who has told me put some extra effort into the painting. I've added some inks using Didi's Magic Inks(formerly Kel's Magic sauce I think it was called.) Anyway, The inking does give it some more depth and gives it a dirtier look.

Still pretty WIP but here's the current progress:

I've always been a big fan of the weathering armor, especially on vehicles. I decided it would be very fitting for Death Guard so I did a test piece on an extra rhino door before applying it to the model. It was actually very simple to do and I think it looks pretty good.

I'm going to go back to the plaguemarines and and add these changes to them as well. I think it should look great and hopefully give them a more complete look that i feel they were kind of lacking.

Comments and criticism welcome as always.

Meh. So much love for this army.

It's a nurgle army.

I don't think it's done very well myself.

Bunch of green stuff, some metal figs, and a average paint job does not a good nurgle army make.

I don't envision slimy, rotting, pestulant, wet, fly buzzing, sickening, stench, decay, etc etc etc when I look at your army.

I've seen Nurgle armies that frankly just grossed me out.

On the plus side, the defiler/giant is a nice touch but does it make me think nurgle? Nope.

To each his own I guess. Usually when someone pours much love into an army and pays attention to detail it shows.
That`s what happens here. Cadaver has a vision for his army and put a lot of time, money and effort into it to get there.

I like it.
A lot.
And I consider myself qualified for an opinion.

Comments like yours sadly add nothing to an ongoing discussion......

Any more updates? You can ignore Stelek, he likes to bash things but he is secretly jealous.

I will echo everyone else that the army looks fantastic. I will also echo that the basic troopers need a thinned green/black/brown wash or something to bring out the detail. Whatever you did to the Rhino do to the troops as well.

Looking forward to more.

Yeah, I've been busy painting. I figured I wouldn't bother with an update until I finished another full squad. I went back and gave the first 14 a wash of brown ink like I did on the rhino and did a few touch ups like painting the eyes orange-ish yellow and gave them and the rhino a coat of Dull Cote.

I've got 4/7 done for the second squad. This one being armed with 2 meltas. I'm also considering doing battle damage/chipped paint like on the rhino on all the PMs. I should have the squad finished in a few days and I'll post pics of them then.

I second that the troopers could use an ink wash of some sort to bring out some of the detail. I think picking out a few bitz with a different color would also help them stand out a bit more. As it stands the troops are a little boring to look at due to being pretty much all one color. It's unfortunate, because they have some nice detail, but it all blends in.

and what paint-scheme did you use for the armour of the rhino?

The plasticard tubes are from Gale Force 9. They come in a pack for about $10.

The paint scheme is as follows:

Primed black

Catachan Green base coat

Didi's Green ink and Black ink mix

Drybrush Catachan green

Drybrush of Camo Green

Drybrush of Rotting Flesh

Didi's Brown ink

Then for the battle damage I took a piece of padding from a blister pack and dabbed it in Chardonite Granite and wiped some off before dabbing it randomly on the raised edges. Then I touched up the blotches with Adeptus Battelgrey, leaving the edges of the Chardonite Granite showing.

As for the lack of detail in the painting. As I mentioned in the above post I went back and updated the PMs before hitting them up with Dull Cote. The finished models are now looking more like this:

Pretty much all that's left is the eyes on some of them and possibly going back and adding weathering to the armor.

Here's a few WIP champs and PMs:

Have you considered an eensy little dab of gloss varnish over the eyes, just to make them glow more?

No, I hadn't thought of that. I'll give it a try and see how it turns out. Thanks.

I post over at B&C but I'm not entered in Call of Chaos. I'm such a slow painter I just didn't think it was worth it to enter.

Thanks for the comments.

Finished the 3rd squad today. Except the eyes. I always forget the damn eyes. Also I should note the yellow helmet looks particularly like crap in these pics. It's actually not bad in real life it's just got a funny angle in the pic I guess. It' also has the chipped paint effect which might be why it looks weird in the pic.

I had planned to keep doing a bit more painting before going back to converting anything else but I've had ideas flowing for my next defiler and I really wanted to take a break from painting for a bit and get the second defiler built so I can play some larger games even with if it means using unpainted models.

So here's the initial design:

"Oh noes I is aspoldin' in my pants!"

....Ok, I just got bored when dry fitting some bits and my mind went straight in the gutter. I took a picture to document my immaturity. Idle hands and all that.

Now here's the real pictures:

Basically just the torso design. The head is just propped in place for now. I'll be filling it in with greenstuff and the smoke launchers have been drilled out and will have wires running to the back of the head.

I guess I should also mention this defiler is going to be a bipedal mech looking defiler. I wanted to do something completely different from my other one.

I didn't do really any planning for the model before I started building it and just kind of started assembling things on the fly. So I'm not really sure if I'll keep the cannon on the chest. It'll be a bit of a pain to change since it's glued together but I'll see how things look once the model gets a little further along.

My first thought on the defiler - WTF??
Then I saw the second pic, where my first thought there - So ... he shoots himself in the head with the smoke launchers??

Anyway, I like where it's headed, and props on using the bike prow as iron gob

The latest batch of painted plaguers look quite nice as well.

Defiler #1 is 100% complete, based and ready for paint!

The flash kind of hides it but there are shallow holes in the gas mask filter to give it a more realistic look rather than just a simple cylinder.

Hopefully I'll be able to make the second defiler even cooler than this one.

Wow, awesome comment from Stelek. Considering his sub-laclustre contributions to our hobby I am surprised that he's been so negative. HF's comment, whilst nowhere near as insulting, is rather hypocritical (you can't criticise as well as compliment in his book, you see, unless you're playing some sort of Kafkaesque mind games).

As individual pieces these would be good, as a whole this army is pretty much as good as it gets.

Your original Defiler/giant designs were ok. I thought to myself that I would keep an eye on them and see where it went etc etc. The final version on the other hand is much much better! I really like what you have done with the mask on the giant face and the skin looks very good also. Great job!

I like the look of your entire force, but when ya get this defiler painted up, you need to give us a pic of em all together. I think it is a great centerpiece!

Keep it up

Daaaaaamn. Nice work.

I really do wish you would do a Defiler with the first pose you were test-fitting. Considered doing an EC Defiler just for a lark?

May I ask what bit you used for the gas mask on the finished Defiler?

Thanks for the comments guys.

Savnock, I believe that the 'splodin' pants defiler will be no more than a fond memory, unless you want to pay for the kit... Also, the gas mask is from a Fantasy Orc Warboss. I'll be using the same bit for a daemon prince.

Alright, today is a double dose of defiler day.

This one seems to be coming along a lot quicker than the first.

I can't really get a good pic of the pose it will have until more is glued together but here's the legs and torso so far:

Legs close up:

I changed the pipes on the back from the Ork bits to these, mostly just to keep the vent theme running throughout all my vehicles. I may have gone a bit overboard, though, it looks a bit like a naval mine.

A little bit of wire work I've started for the limbs:

Hot glue for the"liquid." I'll be using water effects on it once it's painted.

I haven't started it just yet. I'm going to get the second defiler finished and then I'll be doing the plaguereaper. I did go to the hardware store last week and got all the PVC bits I need for the tanks. So I have everything I need to start building. Luckily this defiler is going pretty quickly so hopefully I'll start work on the plaguereaper in about a week.

I am stoked. The theme with the exhaust ports will look really interesting on the Baneblade, but are you planning anything else? I've got it in my head to do something along the lines of a bad ass Nurgle super heavy this summer, and I was wondering what ideas you were thinking about? I'm definitely planning on pimping out the main weapon array with some extra cannons, but I'm stumped as to what to do to make it more Nurgley.

Cadaver's Death Guard @ 2008/04/29 05:33:08

Post by: Starfarer

I've been planning how I will build my plaguereaper basically since I got the Apocalypse book. I knew it would be something I wouldn't want to build until I had made a good amount of progress on the main army so over the months I've had ideas and picked up bits I would need and set them aside so I have a large amount of stuff already on hand for the conversions.

I've only opened the baneblade box once or twice to look things over and didn't even bother looking through the instructions so I'll need to go over it more carefully before I get to work and make sure all the ideas and bits I have will look right and fit where they're supposed to but generally this is what I have planned for it.

Hellstorm cannon with WHFB hellcannon horned skull head and jaw on the end of the barrel.

Large dozer blade made up of 2 or 3(have three but might be too many) IG dozer blades angled where the ends will slant back towards the tracks. The dozer blade will be covered with spikes and lots of dead bodies/skeleton caught up in there.

Some loose panels and damaged hull bits with nurgly stuff coming out, some nurglings too to show nurgling infestation.

For the tanks on the back I actually wanted to make it alot different from all the other ones I've seen. I was thinking about where the acid ooze stuff from the cannon would be made of and how it would be acquired.

I'm mean it shoots a rather large blast and the tanks would only hold so much. So I decided that I would have 2-3 large tanks on the rear of the vehicle that were like processing dead bodies into a soup to feed into the gun. These tanks would have tubes going to 2 smaller tanks on the back of the turret that obviously feed directly into the gun.

So I got 3 extra Ork wrecka balls that will be converted to have grabby bits on the end that pick up dead bodies from the battlefield to feed into the vats. I bought the corpse cart from WHFB for the corpse piles that will go into the processing tanks.

Also from the corpse cart are zombies impaled on spikes that pull the cart. These I'm taking and adding to the sides of the vehicle. Basically just there as trophies or what have you.

So that should give you an idea of what's to come. There's more but I don't want to give away every detail of what I'm doing.

Post by: Ungentle

Wow, that's pretty detailed, lol. I didn't think about using the Hellcannon barrel, but that's a pretty gnarly idea. I'm just trying to stay as far away from the grabby/squibbly phallic symbol cannon on the one Plaguereaper I've seen.

'Fraid not. The codex clearly states on page 86 that spiky penises are only available for tanks, but for the points it's just a waste.

Well, I have a little update to report. I was diligently working on my raptors when a good for nothing friend called me and I continued to try and drill with my pin vice while talking on my cellphone. My hand slipped and I gouged a hole right under my thumbnail, which bled like crazy and hurt like hell. So I decided to call it a day on the converting.

I do have some pics although I was hoping to post pics of the Raptors after they were completely finished.

My Death Guard raptors are renamed Reapers and have a bit of a grim reaper feel to them(hence the name.) I greenstuffed a hood for one and I think like them better without hoods, they look a bit creepier. They will all be carrying scythes for CCWs except the champ. The champ will be based off a standard Raptor champion.

squad minus champ

nurgely bits

Wings(only got 3 done before my injury :()

The other day I painted up a PM in an alternate scheme just to see what it would look like. It's pretty cool, I think, although it's a bit rushed as it was just a test mini. I really like the streak method I used on the armor as well as the rust rather than metallics. The weathered armor and purple and green glazes turned out alright, I think. The purple glaze much more visible than the green in these pics.

I'm going to experiment on using these techniques on my regular PMs in the normal colors and maybe combine the rust effect with the metallic armor trim on my PMs. I'm contemplating using this paint scheme for my chosen.

C&C welcome.

looking good! I do understand this was just a quick test and that it's nurgle but althgough the colour scheme is good, personally I think it woud benefit from being a little neater, especially the washes (purple on the back looks a bit splodgy. The streak effect is great!

keep it up. Did you consider painting a basecoat of blood on the champ while you were bleeding? would be a different touch, although players may think it's a bit creepy

Cadaver's Death Guard @ 2008/05/16 10:41:56

Post by: DaMaGe

The rusty metal parts are so similar in colour to the rest of the model that it loses a bit of definition. I agree on being a little neater with the washes but I'd also make the metal a) more metallic and b) darker, to break up the armour colours. I know you want 'rust' not 'metal', but only metal rusts Also, atm some of the rust just looks like you have put one coat over the basecoat.

The armour plates btw, are awesome - esp the purple washes.

PS. hope this comes across as constructive.

As already stated fantastic work, put my old Death Guard to shame...

(cries in corner)

I'm a big fan of the white color scheme, I think it lets the puss and sores and rust stand out while the green just makes it all blend in together.

That's also why my bezerkers are grey with blood splatters rather than red.

I really don't want my project log to turn into an argument about what people should and shouldn't post. That said, people can post whatever they see fit but if they're being an a-hole, more often than not, people will let them know they are being an a-hole.

I'm just guessing here, but I think alot of the people telling me to ignore negative comments is because I'm a new member here and that's much appreciated. However, I'm a big boy and I can deal with some constructive criticism. I do think posts that just straight up bash an army, regardless of the level of skill of the army presented, are really childish and immature and probably done to gain the attention that initial post has received here. People like that aren't worth my time and so I don't let stuff like that bother me.

I've been pretty busy working on stuff but I've been lazy about posting updates, so I thought it was about time I posted up some of the progress I've made.

Reapers/Raptors: More or less finished. I need to do a few detail bits but nothing major.

WIP Aspiring Champion converted from Chaplain Cassius(apologies for the horribly blurry pic):

My ForgeWorld Death Guard troops. The guns aren't glued in place yet, nor have the backpacks been attached. Those will be added after painting. I did these without using greenstuff on the plastic parts. Instead I wanted to make the armor corroded more in line with the FW bits. I drilled random holes of various sizes and distressed them with an exacto knife and then added tiny holes with a push pin. It turned out pretty well even though it was much more time consuming than greenstuff would've been.

ACs:

Corroded armor close up:

It's been awhile. I almost let the whole month of June slip by without an update. I just couldn't let that happen. So I've been hard at work all week painting a few characters. The daemon prince got a new head not too long ago and I built a Sorcerer in Terminator armor based of the Typhus model. The head is from the WFB Dark Emissary with the horns cut off.

The Sorcerer:

I need to go back and add some weird psychic effects to his eye. I think that will make him look a bit creepier.

The Daemon Prince:

I'm extremely happy with how the Daemon Prince turned out. I got my hands on a bunch of the new washes and found that Devlan Mud was the perfect color to use for my technique for painting bones. I also used some washes on the arm wound and pustules and inflamed skin around them. I had so much fun painting this guy I think I want to do another.

Awesome work Caddy, great looking characters. I like the conversions you've done as well, solid use of the emissary head and great gas-mask ogre on the prince (my ogre tyrant has the same head, just more tusk- and less gas-mask).

Glad the washes are working out for you

EDIT -- Nice bases too, good and solid.

I love the conversions and the effort that was put into this. The shading and the color pallet are spot on.

Maybe it's the lighting that makes the value range look too uniform. The sorcere really needs to have a few really bright areas to stand out. The bone plague hive might do this if they were brightened up. Carry that across the model, because every part of him looks like every other part of him so nothing really stands out.

Contrast that with the demon prince. Livid white skin vs murky green armor, especially on the outstretched arm w/empty hand. That area is extremely interesting to look at. Now look at the front of the sorcerer- it doesn't have flow so the eye gets trapped.

Uhhh... trying to put it down? Whatever. Try and find one place that I said, "THIS SUCKS". OH that's right, you CAN'T because it isn't there.
I offered a suggestion on how to make 1 figure better. You need to learn the difference between critique and dislike. :S

I found that to be a problem with the sorcerer myself. Honestly, I feel the Typhus model simply doesn't have alot of added details where I can contrast the color. The nurgling is one place and He came out much to green so I may go back and paint him a purple to tie in with the purplish/red intestines. I could also maybe highlight the metallic tubing a bit but frankly with 20+ more terminators to paint I'm probably not going to put too much more effort into this guy. He'll do for tabletop.

The daemon prince on the other hand I'm very pleased with. This guy was quite a challenge as he was completely assembled before painting and some areas were really tough to get to, let alone detail. I spotted a few bits in the picture I need to touch up but overall I agree the contrast of the colors on the daemon prince really works and all my plastic terminators with the greenstuff guts will get the same flesh coloration here to showcase that nice contrast of colors.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments. It's really encouraging to get feedback on the models, including the constructively critical feedback. I'll never push myself as hard without people to essentially say, "you can do better." That motivates me as much, if not more so than the general praise. So thanks again to everyone, it is much appreciated!

Woah! I've been really impressed with your conversion thus far. They are, at least to me, very original, innovative and cool. At first, the paintjobs didn't really thrill me, they seemed a tad bit blotchy and without enough rotting going on. However, your sorc and DP really knocked my socks off. I think you should go a bit more for the reddish gore visible on the DP on the rest of your models; along with the green boils and ulcers and whatnot, that's dead-on nurgly.

More gore!!! Pus for the pus God!

I've got a few updates to report. I finished my first squad of terminators. Only 2 more to go. The pics are a bit crappy but I was in a rush.

I also started painting the Defiler. I should have him finished within the next few days.

And last but not least, time to reveal a little something I've been keeping a secret on most of the forums I post. My commissioned GUO has arrived and he's a big 'un. He was sculpted by Waargh of Tau Online and the project log for his construction can be viewed here.

That Demon's going to be COOL.
I went through the whole thread... i was sorry to see that you didn't post any of the promised minis with painting experiments for painting this thing.

You got one HECK of a great deal, too.

Unfortunately, though, I think the guts are lacking. There are no details to the actual intestines and, at one point, an intestine comes out and ends, looking more like a tentacle, by it's tapered design.

Still, however. It's nice.

Do you know how often he takes commissions?

Eric

Hey dude, I know you from bartertown. I'm lonestarcody over there. You helped me out with a BTR a few months back.

Yeah, I didn't keep up too much with painting the other minis, although I did get some plaguebearers done for it, I posted them in my personal project log.

As for the GUO, I thought is was pretty good deal, it would have been better if I had paid entirely upfront as the currency exchange rate went down alot as the dollar has been dropping in value. I do plan to do some touch ups on it. I have a problem leaving even splendid models as they come, and that includes commissions.

I plan to add many nurglings to the base and have some of them spilling out of the guts. I also need to touch up certain areas of the model and add a bit of detail to areas I think are lacking a bit.

He takes alot of local commissions that he showcases, but I was his first international one. I had to wait a month or so until he finished up a few stompas he had backlogged until he started on my project. But he is very good and I can give you a few links to some of his other projects if you would like to check out some of his other stuff.

OK, so the Defiler is almost done. The pics have a bit of a blue tint to them for some reason so the colors are slightly off. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with him but I can't decide if I want to paint the exposed spine like bone or mechanical. Any suggestions?

I hate you!

How are plebs like me, who find using green stuff to make a simple pustule groundbreaking and whose attempts at painting would shame a blind, handless monkey supposed to ever take part in this hobby.

Seriously, the work is amazing. The ultimate success for an army is for it to be a personal reflection of your own interpretation of the hobby and the fluff, and you have achieved that in spades. Everything about the force shows a touch of the personal and an indication of the time and effort (and it has to be said oodles of money!) you have lavished upon it.

For mere mortals such as myself, who have neither the skill nor concentration to dedicate to our troops, it is inspiring to see what can be done. My ambition is to actually complete a fully painted DG army - then, maybe, I'll try and learn from your example and apply some of the techniques.

Keep up the good work!

That Defiler is so disgusting!!! Great work, both in terms of the bitz and conversion and the paint. I think the sickly green on the base is too dominant and lacks the depth of the rest of the model, so that to me would be the area to look into in the future.

Though I don't like one thing and this prolly 'cause I'm stuck in the heresey times of The Flight of Einsteain (Totally mispelled I just know it) but back in the day manreapers (plague reapers, scythes, whatever you want to call them) were only allowed to be used by Mortarion, the Deathshroud (mort's bodyguard), and very few of his chosen.......... So bassically I'm saying I don't like ur overuse of the manreaper, but otherwise I find your army truly sickening (once again in the good way).

The wings are from a WFB Tomb Kings Carrion. The pustules and other stuff on the torso is greenstuff. If you go back a few pages in the log you can see some WIP pics of the conversions and sculpting work.

Yep, I just had a member over at warseer buy the baneblade. It should be seen on the gaming tables somewhere in Australia in a few weeks. I also sold some other stuff too, the raptors and my rhinos among other things. Just needed to do a little cutting back on everything I had. It was getting a bit out of control. Like pressing 10,000 points out of control. So I decided to get rid of the stuff I never use. If I ever decide I miss the baneblade too much, I'll just build another one.

I'll try and get a group shot up once I get a few more units painted. I need to start working on all my FW plaguemarines, I have 40 that really need to get tabletop ready.

Yes, they are definitely worth it, IMO, anyway. I suppose it depends how much you or anyone wants to spend for quality models. I find them to be worth the price, but you're looking at around $45 for one set(including FW shipping costs and all that jazz) and that's before getting the Chaos Space Marine kit for the legs arms, backpacks, etc. I love them though and haven't thought twice about buying them. I have 4 sets of ten that I'm currently building and painting and liked them so much I decided to completely redo my DG army based around the models with a new paint scheme.

Shrike78 wrote:Your extreme talent and attention to detail is excruciatingly apparent with every model.

You should be seeing alot more soon. As I stated in response to the previous post I'm redoing the whole army in a new paint scheme with a set 2,000 point list. I currently have 19 FW plaguemarines painted and 9 more to go for the list and then 4 Oblits, a LR, Greater Daemon, some lesser daemons, some new termies and a little update on the paint scheme for my Deamon Prince.

After that the plans are for a LaTD themed Daemon army. It will be completely nurgle in appearance but I will use some Bloodletters, Bloodcrushers and Pink Horrors for mutants, big mutants and combat drug enhanced cultists. I'll probably be making some new Daemon prince models to represent uber mutants as well. I'm going to try a test conversion with the new AoBR warboss but will probably refine the design once the DP plastic kit is released next spring. But all this is dependent on how quickly I can get my Death Guard finished up.

RGJ798 wrote:Simply amazing - squashes any chance of me starting a death gaurd army, I can't sculpt and whats the point of nurgle if your not gonna sculpt.

That doesn't have to be the case. My newer incarnation of DG has very little sculpting throughout the army. All FW plaguemarines with battle damage cut from the plastic CSM bits rather than sculpted onto it. I think the Oblits are some of the only models with any sculpting and that's more to fix bad sockets and gaps in the metal molds. I wanted to go the opposite route from my first DG which had lots of greenstuff and go a more basic, closer to heresy look.

Right now I'm taking a bit of a break from the hobby. Hopefully I can find time to get around to doing some painting but real life matters have kept me from being too active lately. Anyway, I'll be sure to post any progress I do in the future. Thanks for all the comments everyone has given! I'll try not to go too long without getting a little something done here and there!

quick one more-> What are the "vents" made from on termies? (plastic or foam) and did you buy different gauges/sizes or did you form the end to be different sizes?

I myself am a nurgle freak and my attempt at the "vents" or plague hives as i called them was not executed as well as yours.

Thanks - see ya round!

Here are some pics of my redone Death Guard in a new scheme for the FW models. I also have redone Terminators and a few new Oblits as well.

This army is supposed to be Post Heresy but not extremely long afterwards, so the army itself keeps more in line with Mortarion's tactics, unit choices and squad sizes. Some liberties were taken for gameplay and model preference so the Oblits may be a stretch for some people and the terminators will be a 5 man squad, not 7 but this is so they can ride in a Land Raider.

WIP PMs and Champ:

New Termies:

New Oblits:

Did you knick up the legs and arms a bit? The FW kits are awesome but the level of detail far exceeds that of the plastic bits you need to make a full marine. I can't quite tell from these photos if they're knicked and damaged in much the same manner as the kit is.

Great progress so far.

Yeah I basically drilled shallow holes with various sized drill bits and then carved it up on the edges with a hobby knife for damage to the plastic bits. I did this on the terminators as well, but not as extensively.

I've crawled through a bunch of the pics here... outstanding effort sir!
I particularly like the vehicle weathering and the new paint scheme for the death guard troopers.
I also like the purply-pink pustules. They offset the green nicely.

The defiler conversion is damn nice too but enough comment on that

For those of us who came late to the thread, it's a pity that so many of the pics are now offline.
Do you have any step by step instructions on how you got the weathering or did the troopers? They certainly look good bang for buck.

Yeah, my photobucket account reached it's max limit so I deleted alot fo the early WIP pics, but I guess they got replaced by new pics labled under the same name. That might throw people off viewing the first page but oh well.

As for paint scheme details, it's not too much of a change from the old scheme just an extra step added. It goes as follows:

GW Black primer base coat.

Catachan green

Drybrush Camo green

Drybrush Rotting Flesh

Wash with a Dark Green Wash - I mix Didi's Magic Ink Black and Green maybe 5:1 Anyone interested can get it at thewarstore. I highly recommend it if you have lots of models to do because the containers are big and are fairly cheap and the quality is great.

Drybrush Bleached Bone

Brown Wash

The armor trim is Reaper Tarnished Brass(I think that's the name anyway) followed with a Devlan Mud wash (two coats.)

Well then double kudos to you then!

Those plaguemarines do not show any signs of the chalkiness that usually results from extensive drybrushing.

thanks for the sharing.

Another update. I'm on a timetable to get this army done by the 18th of this month for a local army painting challenge. Failing that I have to have it finished for a painted army comp. over at Tau Online by the 30th. So here's what I've been working on recently.

Plague Marines: the 2 Champs skin is still WIP and I want to try some freehand on the champion holding the book.

Repainted Oblits:

Repainted Daemon Prince:

Left to paint I have 2 more OBlits, 5 terminators, 1 landraider, 10 lesser Daemons, 1 Greater daemon, as well as convert and paint 1 Plague Champion.

I'm still deciding on how to base them but I'm leaning towards tundra/snow bases.

I have seen your efforts and my first instinct is to hate you. But I can't with such wonderful Nurgly goodness! Consider yourself as having inspired me to finally complete my own Nurgle Project. Thanks!

I think I had too much painted already to qualify for the challenge. But I still think it's good inspiration to join in the fun, free dinner or not!

next time you build terminator armoured models i might think about useing this , spray and paint the head and body seperately
then mix a few colours to make a fairly distgusting colour ,
water it down (asif you were going to wash ) and add a fairly large amount to the neck , (asif almost spilling )and
add the unglued head on , the watered down stuff should spill ,when its all dry it will look asif its oozeing from the joint in the neck , then glue and add the head ,
nice conversions by the way
