Looking forward to more!

Very good stuff. Also, thanks for pointing out to me that the Masters don't have their heads stuck, I didn't buy them because I thought they were modelled on (and I am tired of bald marines).

Subscribed!

You know, I usually pass over most SM armies after seeing a few thousand, but these are looking top notch thus far. Your brush work is very impressive. I like them!

Eisenhorn: I will take a photo of him when I get home tonight. He's a Tyranid Hunter with emporers champion sword.

Sturnreaper & Teek: Thanks...

Darkness: Although they are out of focus and not finished yet... lol, thanks

----------

I decided to paint the remaining 2 masters of the chapter heads and took some photos of the process:

1. I did 2-3 thin watered down layers of tanned flesh over the skin areas (Tanned flesh is not this bright, for some reason my flash made it too bright)

2. Here I washed the recesses with watered down flesh wash.. (namely under the lip, under the nose, under the eyes, ears, neck, dimples, cheek lines, metal rivets, etc)

3. Using a horizontal stroke I added the eyes and upper set of teeth to the head with his mouth open

4. Dotted eyes

5. Mixed 1:1 tanned flesh with dwarf flesh and did 1 thin layer over main skin areas, leaving a little of the foundation to show. I also cleaned up the wash during this stage so it's not so messy

6. Mixed 1:1 dwarf flesh with elf flesh to highlight areas of the face (upper lip, nose, eyebrows, forehead/brow, upper cheekbones, chin)

7. Mixed 1:1 elf flesh with skull white to add extreme highlight to previous highlights

8. Cleaned up model with chaos black and painted in metal parts, bionic eye lens, rivets on their forehead, etc)

9. Mounted to the bodies

Enjoy

I plan to finish up the arms later tonight

As for their backpacks I am waiting on my bits order of commander eagle backpacks to come in so those will have to wait

I hate to be a downer when it comes to such great work, but am I the only one who finds those heads a little. . . well, creepy and unheroic? Maybe it's the eyeshadow.

exocorp's Ultramarines WIP (Updated 7-22 with thunderhawk and FW Chaplain Dread) @ 2008/05/20 02:03:33

Post by: Destrado

I think it's the heads themselves, they're boring. The plastic Space Marine Sargeant head (you know, the one in the old tactical squad sprue) has a lot more character. Any that was done by JG do.

EDIT: I miss the "Clint Eastwood" head.

I had left out some minor details (Gems, one master's key, leather highlights on bolter strap and the thunderhammers leather hook) and was working on them this morning...
I'm leaving for Asia for a month and a half so I won't have time to finish their commander eagle backpacks (they are still on order)

Anyway here they are

Master 1

Master 2

Master 3

Master 4

Masters of the Ultramarine Chapter!

A glimpse at my next WIP

See everyone when 5th edition comes out... time to go pack

They loook amazing how long did it take (hours) to paint them?

Whats the rest of ur army like?
Bet its amazing like the rest

By the way how did you do those bases?? Is it premodelled (if so where did you get them) or did you make them urself?

Modell Collector: Thanks I plan to work on my tau fire warriors while I am in Asia. I'm bringing my stuff to paint! I have 36 painted but they were stored away in their army transport case

Eisen: Thanks... My captain is a metal model. It's a mix of the emporers champion and tyranid war veteran.

Bart: Thanks I'd say between 12-15 hours. It took me about 2-3 days painting them. The bases are from Micro Art Studio. They are resin cast and the guy has a ton of them!

Really nice painting! My only "slight" criticism is that, as Ultramarine Chapter Masters, they would follow Index Astartes color doctrines. Each of these minis should (fluffwise) have their shoulder trim and insignia match the company that they head. The use of the gold shoulder trim would only be appropriate for the second company (yellow, either as yellow, or represented with gold).

If these guys are Ultras, they would be pretty strict about the insignia.

Really, at a loss for what else to say... Lots of people think the Ultramarines are cool, but you sir, you LOVE them. It's rare to see someone really get into a hobby with that kind of fervent energy, and you've done an amazing job. GW may have created the SMurfs, but you've made this batch truly your own. Wow.

I thought I was gonna be able to resist a FW chaplain DN..............you suck.

That is soooo cool, a great centerpiece character/vehicle that will really stand out on the battlefield. I think the glowing green looks good although it would probably reflect off the main body as well in reality. I have no idea how you could do that tho. Your ultras are incredible looking BTW, looks like you have a whole company about plus support assets. The thunderhawk will be amazing, keep us updated!

great work there - the whole army is a tour de force.
my only neg is that there is no blue on the chaplian dread and it's base doesn't link as well as it could to the other dreads you have - may adding the static grass to the others' bases would help? NOTE this is a really minor gripe so ignore me with absolutely no hard feelings.

i also love the step-by-steps you've added - really handy for the rest of us.

Also we need a piccy of the whole army on the table now.

to every one else - are we allowed to ban certain members so we all feel better about our own stuff?

I think your paint job on that powerfist sergeant says a lot about that mini - that even a beautiful paint job can't make his ugly, awkwardly sculpted neck look better. And you really did do a great job on it - it's just an ugly sculpt.

Wow. we should have been friends a few years back, i had a blood angels force a little larger than yours here, and I think that would have made for a pretty nice imperial sided apoc battle.

your force, plus, 1 thunderhawk, 1 titan, 4 LRs, 10 Rhinos, 6 razorbacks, 2 vindy, 2, whirlwinds, 9 speeders, 2 tempests, 100 assault marines, 30 death company 40 terminators, 30 vet assault marines 3 baal preds, 3 lascannon preds, 20 devastators, 6 dreads, 30 scouts, 10 sniper scouts, all the characters... COMPLETELY PAINTED!

that would have been impressive indeed... a field of blue and red.

now i am starting fresh with my blood angels, since i had to part with them due to a cross country move.

Beautiful army, truly a inspiring piece.

I hope that I can achieve those same results with my painting. I am a new player well old but new to 5th I have never been good at painting.

How long have you been painting models?

Just one word - HURR!

(as I look at the pics I can actually hear all 150+ marines shouting it together!)

inspirational army - thank you so much for sharing it.

So... Many... Smurfs. Im sure you get that all the time.

Seriously, do you do anything but paint? All of them are done, and so well.

You have my admiration.
