Life Of Shans log of all... Adeptus Arbites, Sisters of Battle, IG, World Eaters and more @ 2008/12/12 10:27:22

Post by: lifeofshan

Hi,

As a long time lurker of dakka, and i do mean LONG time, i've recently been inspired to actually start contributing to the site, so following a short experiment with posting on other peoples threads i've decided to bite the bullet and post up some of my work for critique.

I've been collecting Warhammer + 40k + almost everything else GW has produced since about 1990/1991, but its only been in the last year or so that i've really picked up a paintbrush. As such i have a huge backlog of models and armys, all patiently waiting for their time to come.

I intend for this log to showcase the work i'm doing at the moment, but also to display the models i've painted over the last year, including my 1500pt Cadian all infantry army, 1300pts of Sisters of Battle and 1000pts of World Eaters.

To get this started i've decided to post a converted Adeptus Arbites with power maul and suppresion shield. I intend to use this guy in an Inquisitors retinue as a Crusader. He will be backed up with another 2 similar models, along with 3 "acolytes" with carapace armour and shotguns. I feel this will be the best way to get a small amount of Arbites into a conventional 40k army, especially armed the way they are.

The model itself is a metal space marine scout, with its head removed and replaced with the head of one of the old Adeptus Arbites. The Power maul is simply a cut down space wolf power axe. The suppresion shield is a cut down chaos warrior shield, with the gaps filled in with green stuff, an aquilla from the IG tank sprue and a vision slit made out of a track link from an IG tank. He was based with one of the brass etched pieces from the 40k basing kit, along with some razor wire. After being undercoated black, he was painted with GW foundation paints + inks, along with a bit of boltgun metal and shining gold.

I've provided various views of the model, some with flash, some without. Enjoy.

Hopefully i'll be able to take some more pictures next week, starting with my IG.

Look forward to reading your comments. Hopefully this log will eventually lead to a blissful state of nirvana, where all my models are painted and none have to feel unloved.

Yeah right.

Hey, that look like a nice conversion, interesting use of bits, specially the vision slit for the shield.
The power axe -> power maul conversion is classic, and looking very good.

The paint job is a bit more difficult to comment on, the pics are a bit grainy, but it looks like you´ve got some highlights on the blue, and that´s always a good thing.

All in all, very nice model, show us some more!

Very nice Arbite - classic look of SM Scout w/ Arbite head and bladeless power axe for the power maul. Sharp stuff. I look forward to seeing what else you've got!

I really like the conversion, apart from the view slit in the shield. I don't think it fits with the rest of the conversion and breaks up the asthetic quality of the rest of the minature. Nice highlights on the blue!!!

Very cool. I was thinking of making a similar face conversion for my knight themed Space Marine Chapter. It'll be tough, as it'll be my first 40k project, but with these nice references, I may be able to pull out something decent.

Update Time.

So i've been working on my Imperial Guard recently, trying to turn my 1500pt pure infantry force into something a little more flexible. First up was finishing my Commissar, based off Yarrick with a Chaos Marines Plasma Pistol and Power Sword.

First time i've tried doing any sort of special effects on a power weapon, normally i just drybrush them boltgun metal and move on. Same with the Plasma coils on the pistol.

Quite happy with the paint job, although seeing it magnified on screen makes me cringe at all the little mistakes.

Hope you like it.

Oh and guys, thanks for all the kind comments on my Arbites guy, hope this keeps you interested.

Update Part 2.

So i've been a busy boy. As well as the Commissar i've been working on a squad of plastic Rough Riders, made up from Empire Pistoliers, Cadians and Bretonnian lance arms. Since these pictures were shot i've green stuffed cloth folds onto the lance arms and added reins to the free hands. Very happy with the overall effect, although not sure about the pose on one of them, looks very narrow and "straight on".

Hopefully should be able to start painting them over the weekend.

The sharp eyed ones amongst you might notice the shotgun one of the riders is carrying. I built this up from a flamer and a lasgun and have used it on my three hardened veteran squads. If anyones interested i can post a little tutorial on how to make them or show some shots of my vets.

Hope you like em.

Nice job and thanks for sharing. If I was to give any constructive criticism, it would be that it looks like your highlights should be thinned a bit more, just using a bit more water. The base coat looks nice and smooth, but the slightly dusty appearance of the brighter colours could be improved by just thinning it out a bit more, maybe doing two or three thin layers in place of one or two thicker layers. Keep up the good work!

Nice work on the Commissar!

The rough rider looks good, but I have one nagging thing...

Why is there a pouch and grenade attached to the end of his lance?

If anything shouldn't you put a power pack like thing there to signify the hunting lance rules?

Life Of Shans log of all... Adeptus Arbites, Sisters of Battle, IG, World Eaters and more @ 2009/01/15 21:12:51

Post by: lifeofshan

Darksword - Glad you like the shotgun

Joyous_Oblivion - The pouch is going to be painted up as a power pack. That and the grenade seemed like quite a convenient way of turning it into a more solid looking hunting lance.

More updates tomorrow of the earlier work on this army, including a hardened veteran squad, storm-trooper squad with chimera and an infantry squad.

Yeah, I'll second the call for a tutorial on your shotgun - it's pretty terrific-looking. I'm a big fan of the Arbites shotguns and the metal shotgun that came with the OOP metal SM Scout Bikers was great, too. The new ones on the plastic Scout sprue are pretty good, but yours is considerably better.

I've also had problems trying to figure out how to make an appropriate 41st milennia hunting lance. As much as folks mocked it, I like LunaHound's chainblade lance here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/227260.page. You've got a nice simple solution there, too.

Updated again.

Decided to photograph some of my models from just over a year ago, inspired by the American Uniforms in Black Hawk Down. I wanted the body armour to have a chipped, worn-in look about it, hence the metal highlights. Remember this is over a year old, i'd like to think i've got better at painting since then, particularly skin. The Rough Riders will be painted to match up with them.

First up a plain old infantry squad.

Next, a squad of hardnened veterans with shotguns, plasma guns and a storm bolter for the sergeant. The men have sculpted carapace armour to tie them in with the stormtroopers. Shotguns are based off the pattern seen on the Rough Rider, Plasma guns made from the other half of the flamer + old ork plasma gun + chopped down voxcaster set.

Chimera, which i actually painted last week. Ran out of desert yellow before i started so i decided to have my tanks a slightly different colour to my squads. Tank commander has an extra plate of body armour added over his stomach.

Finally a squad of stormtroopers, pictured with their attached chimera.

There you go guys, more updates to follow, including a tutorial on how to make the shotguns, which i hope to do tonight.

Looks like the shotguns are the chopped off end of a flamer (used to make the plasma guns). Reverse the flamer end, and stick it to the back half of a lasgun.

Thanks for the kind words all... its really encouraging to hear them.

Next up, my WIP basilisk with armoured crew compartment.

and with the top section propped on.

I'm trying to make it look like the forgeworld armageddon pattern basilisk. Since the pics were taken i've added the roof and finished off the side sections, now just need to do the rear including the door and then add some detail.

comments + criticism welcome.

Another update on my WIP Basilisk.

So i finished the armoured crew compartment, added various bits of details, created a rear door out of the original top of the basilisk shield along with cut-offs from the rear platform and then riveted all the new sections. Only thing i need is two round hatches, one for the obviously open hatch at the front and one for the top section.

Sadly, the ones i need are at my parents house and i wont be going there for a few weeks now.. oh well, plenty of other projects to work on in the meantime.

next mini-project, a squad of Seraphim + Sister Superior for my Witch Hunters army.

Hi guys.

This isnt any Heretical Threadromancy, the Helskans have been in transit for the last 6 months as i moved from Middlesbrough to the Cambridge, started 2 new jobs and got married.

I did fit in some modelling and painting in that time, but managed to lose the camera cable so i've been content merely observing everyone else making awesome progress on their logs.

This is gonna be an update in several parts, starting with some new additions to the Rangers. First up is my version of Sly Marbo, represented by an elite special forces soldier.

The gun is a combination of a hellpistol and a bolt pistol, and is due to have the barrel drilled out in the near future. Demo Charge is made from the barrels of 3 grenade launchers stuck together, with a handle from a tank sprue and a timer made from a cadian command squad re-breather. The night vision goggles were created from a pair of binoculars.

Next up is 12 new hardened veterans with shotguns, heavy flamer and carapace armour. Viewed up close the green stuff on the carapace looks really rough... dammit... These guys will join my 3x 6 man vet squads who suddenly fond themselves illegal in the new codex.

More updates tomorrow.

Apologies for the poor lighting on the shots. Took them late at night and the flash was playing up.

Enjoy.

Double post... but its an update so it doesnt count

First up, PIP on my basilisk. Still needs washing and weathering though but wanted to show that some progress has been made on it.

Next up, my demolisher. I have a feeling i got the idea for this back when guard tanks could have emergency crew exits, thought it would be cool if my crew were steel legion. Then i saw the lascannon gunners and thought it would be cool to have exposed sponsons. Not practical though, wouldnt like to be one of the gunners!

And a close up of the sponson.

Two new melta vets for my vet command squad. Still need carapace armour sculpting on. Decided to add green stuff straps for the rebreathers after the tech-adepts on Helska told me they'd lost the STC's for vacuum attaching them

Finally my master of artillery. Didnt like the idea of an attached artillery commander, much preffered the idea of a Ranger with a vox pack calling in fire support with nothing but a keen eye and a map. He has a green stuffed mic and headset too. Oh and a Catachan vox caster as its much better than the cadian one.

Might base and undercoat some of them tonight. Note the "might" there.

What time is it? Why it's update o'clock....

took these photo's at the same time as the others..

first up is an army shot of whats finished so far, if somewhat far away and blurry.

close up of my old drop trooper section, 1 command hq, 2 spec weapon squads and 3 hardened vet squads.

troop section, 1 platoon hq, 3 infantry squads, 1 remnants, 3 heavy weapon squads and 1 rough rider squad.

armoured fist, 3 squads of stormtroopers, 3 chimeras and a demolisher.

Ok. Now for WIP. My old army was invalidated in bits by the new codex, and i wanted to move some heavy weapon teams into more infantry squads. Plus all my sergeants needed laspistols and ccw's. So heres part of the reorganisation.

New elites, got all my vets upto 10 but missing 8 guys from a new squad at back, and a new commander who's done but AWOL from photo.

New troop section, with 2 platoons each of 1 hq and 3 squads. In background you can also see my valkyrie.

New stormtrooper section, with a new command hq, wip basilisk and again, my valkyrie.

So as part of my reorganisation i have also decided to repaint the skin of all my infantry, tidy up some bits and pieces, paint all the bases and also make the missing models. Should keep me busy for a while.

Hopefully update tomorrow with repaint of hardened vet squads.

Thanks guys.

Model collector, sponsons were made with the botom half of a regular sponson. I cut up some of the plastic from a blister (as i didnt have plastic card when i made it 4/5 years ago) for the rest of the frame. The heavy flamer is from a sentinal, the pintle i think was from an old vehicle storm-bolter. The gunner is a steel legion lascannon crew member.

Was suprisingly easy to put together, but the gun kept snapping off the pintle as its a really thin join.. till i coated it in LOADS of super glue.

Hopefully another update tonight.

I've been working on these guys the last week, actually painting the bases, repainting the skin, drilling the stormbolter barrels and general tidying up. I'm a lot happier with these guys now painting wise. Currently 3 squads of 6 men, need to paint up the remainders for each squad.

This is my newly updated commander, who will be used as Col Stracken.... havent thought of a cool Helskan name for him yet tho... His gun does look a little messy at the back, think thats more to do with the lighting tho, cant really see it so much with natural light.

FINALLY, as a little treat, a repaint in progress of my World Eaters Chaos Lord... yes size does matter, and yes Khorne does give his subjects mighty strength to wield such axes...

still lots to do with him, including painting the base.

Enjoy guys, hopefully more in a few days.

Helskans on pause while i make some more progress on my Adeptus Arbites.

First up is a basic shotgun arbite, converted from the metal space marine scout with the star trek visor. Luckily i had a load of the old arbites that i could chop up to use the heads.

Next is my Arbites Proctor, armed with a shotgun, on a temporary base. Gonna run him in 40k as an inq lord so i can use the rest of the squad as his retinue. Made from Sgt Telion. Decided to add stocks to both shotguns made from kroot rifles so they can deliver the emperors justice in hand to hand too.

Finally 2 shots of my Arbites patrol so far, including the original guy. Hoping to have the Proctor, 3 Arbites with shotguns and 3 with power mauls and suppression shields. Hopefully get them a nice converted repressor to ride in and probably a 5 man back up squad too.

Would also love to add a cyber mastiff or 2 and a handler. And maybe a Chastener. And hopefully stop there.

Very nice Arbite conversions, Brilliant idea to use Telion as the base for the proctor. Not quite that keen on the axe on the world eater, its not about the size, I think its the focal point of that model and should be suitably shiney-kill-bangbang-deathdeath (more detail in other words). Just my two cents.

Two more Arbites with Shotguns. Nothing special done to them. Models are the old metal space marine scouts with shotguns, really love the model on the left, has a real presence about him and is really weighed down with shotgun shells.

Two more Arbites with Power Mauls and Supression Shields. Shields are made from trimmed down chaos warrior shields with the missing bits greenstuffed in.

Finally a group shot of my finished patrol, 1 proctor, 3 with shotguns and 3 with mauls and shields.

Now need to get them based, greenstuff handles for the shields and then paint them. Hoping to do a 5 man support squad to go with them next.

Model Collector, axe is due to be re-painted soonish.

Love the Arbites conversions. When I built an Arbite army 5-6 years ago, I used a ton of SM scouts - they're a great base model for converting Arbites. Also - I appreciate the use of the OOP Power Axe handles for the power mauls - I'm not a big fan of using Ork stikkbomms for them like they do in the BoLS codex.

So i've finished modelling a large part of my Arbites Patrol. Decided i didnt like one of the power maul guys as he looked a little too much like he was mincing, so i pulled him apart and made a new one based off the old scout segt. Also knocked together a heavy with a BIG grenade launcher, based off a cut-down autocannon. Size does matter to Arbites. Especially with their Cyber-hounds. Picked up 3 of them for £8 on eBay, only problem being they are Inquisitor scale... still... when theres a riot in an imperial city why get the sniffer hounds out, get the cyber doggies that are built like police horses i say! Think im gonna use the cyber hounds as arco-flaggelents in my sisters army, make a dog-handler who can act as a priest.

Group shot so far. Spray painted them about 10 minutes ago and realised looking at the pics that i forgot to gren stuff handles onto the suppression shields... damn.

Hopefully some painted arbites soon.

Next up, 1 proctor, 2 Arbites with Power Mauls and 1 Cyber-Mastiff.

Group shot followed by patrol shot.

And no i didnt base them to blend in with my IKEA cabinets... honest..

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Heres some more painted veterans in carapce armour. They will be added into my 3 current squads to make them 10 men strong.

Finished painting my Helskan version of Sly Marbo, complete with detachable demo charge!!

Those Arbites are very clean metal conversions. Turned out great. How do you work on your metal models? Dremel? Was about to start work on Lord Torquemada Coteaz and thought about cutting some details off and doing a head swap, but I have only been working with plastics exclusively. Tips would be interesting.

Thanks for the kind comments guys.

Crossbones - i dont have a dremel, to be honest with my metal models i use a combination of my GW cutters, files and a stanley knife blade. I mainly use the cutters to get rid of any bits of detail i dont want to keep, then file down any rough bits. If i want to keep the bit, i (semi) patiently cut them apart with the knife blade.

Technically they arent great solutions, but they work for me.

Genereicuser - glad you like the shotguns, they're really simple to make, just chop up a lasgun and a flamer and glue them together. Works best with the lasgun with the seperate left hand as that bit tends to get chopped off in the process of making it.

Hopefully gonna get myself in gear and paint some more today/tomorrow.

The power Axes aren't OOP I don't think. They are from the SM Assault MArine Box.

These are all looking good, but the mastiff seems to be lacking something. Maybe some gold accents?

Cool stuff part of me wonders though if the giant cyber hounds would make better Penitent Engines than Arco-Flagellants?

Jimi - one of the power axes is OOP, the left handed one is from the old space wolves sprue, the other two though are from the assualt marine sprue.

I also see what you mean about the mastiff, not sure where to add gold to though, dont want to give him gold teeth and make him look like a gangsta rapper...

llamahead - tbh i dont think they would make good penitent engines due to their size, with true line of sight in the new 40k they are definately too small. They are bigger than flagellants and on bigger bases, but i dont see that being as much of a problem. Also i think the rules better suit flagellents, extra movement, decent close combat, and i would find it hard to justify an armour value or a flamer on them.

Been a busy boy over the weekend, 5 more Helskan ready to serve the Emperor.

Firstly, a new senior officer with bolt pistol and power sword. Havent given him a name yet, need to think about the whole naming structure on Heslka, i kinda want to go with scandanavian names but i cant think of any decent ones, dont want all my guys called sven, olaf or johann.

Next up, Master of Ordnance.

Finally, the last 3 Hardened Vets with shotguns. This means i can finally field all 3 of my Hardened Vets squads as new codex legal 10 man squads.

Next job. Add transfers to the bases of my new guys and then work on the last 4 Adeptus Arbites.

Yeah, i'm not very good at providing in-progress shots.

Glad you like them. Swords and lenses are just Mordian Blue highlighted with a mix of Mrodian Blue and White. For the sword i just kept increasing the white will it was pure white at the end and then washed it with Asurman Blue.

Power weapon was dead simple... just keep making it lighter towards the end and let blue wash do the magic.

Hi guys, did some painting last night on the last 4 arbites. Decided i'd post some WIP shots of the paints jobs as i dont have time to work on them tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully all the mistakes, paint spills and areas i missed painting will get rectified. Still need to do some work on the armour as its just the basecoat of mordian blue at the moment, plus i also need to highlight the cloth.

The last model is troubling me. I would like to give him blond hair but i've never done it before, always stuck to something safe like brown. Anyone know of any good tips for painting blond hair? I dont want to end up with bright yellow or orange.

Really phenomenal work on the Arbites, and I also am a huge fan of your veterans: the 'operative' idea for Marbo turned out really well, and IMHO is a LOT cooler than John Rambo at age 20.

Just questioning the scale factor on the Cyber-Mastiff: that's Barbaretta's dog, unless I am mistaken?

It is Barbarettas dog... i picked up three of them off eBay for about $10-12, but i've only made one so far. Need to think about how to make them all look different, which isnt easy as they are only two piece.

I know it looks much bigger than a normal scale dog, but i see it more like a cross between a dog and a modern day police horse, easily capable of pinning down a fugitive or helping to disperse a rioting mob.

Finished the last 4 arbites im likely to do for the time being. Although i do still need to do 2 more cyber mastiffs and i do fancy doing a female Arbitrator after reading the first two Calpernica novels, Crossfire and Legacy. If i can pick up a suitable model, maybe an Escher model, as the base then i might try and add some carapace, a spower maul and make her a psi-cop.

Anyway, 2 Arbites with bolters, 1 with shotgun.

Followed up by some shots of my second proctor, although im gonna tidy up some mistakes and take some pics tomorrow if theres better light. Quite happy with how his blond hair turned out too.

Oh, and a group shot.

Next up, some more guardsmen i think, as much as i would love to work on another side project its time to get back to the main force for a while.

Yet more fantastic work. All your models have a fantastic 'feel' to them, that is difficult to quantify exactly. Most of all, I think, the unified colour scheme and method of painting, from the figures to the weapons and even the bases, is smooth, clean and realistic.

Thanks for the kind comments guys, really helps to inspire me when i think of how many guards i have left to paint/repaint.

Tzarinchilla - I cant take all the credit for the idea. There was a crimson fists army on the back page of white dwarf years ago that had the same idea for scouts. I just borrowed it and turned them into arbites.

Ivyoda - The guards fatigues are scorched brown, heavy layering of desert yellow, highlight of bleached bone and then a wash of devlan mud.

First up, 3 members of strakens CCS, all with melta guns.

Next, a Storm Trooper segt. Head comes from the sentinel sprue.

And finally, here are five members of his hardened veterans squad.

The paintjobs seem to keep getting cleaner and cleaner and I love all the detail you put into your specialists; they really stand out.

The guard has always been an army that I think massively benefits from adding that bit of character; too bad that doesn't always happen since you often have to deal with so many troops! Great work, keep it up man!

First up, three guys with shotguns from bastonnes squad.

And a plasma gunner for the same squad.

And finally the last melta gunner for Strackens squad.

So yeah, two infantry to go, along with finishing my basilisk, two leman russes, a chimera, a hellhound, a sentinal, a valkyrie and finishing converting a vanquisher.

And i hate painting tanks too...

Got some tanks done today. Finished my Basilisk that i started painting at least 9 months ago.

Next up, a chimera with turret mounted heavy flamer. This started off as an old-shool hellhound, which i ripped apart two weeks ago and retrofitted to a chimera, with some plasticard. Couldnt find another multi-laser though, so i fashioned a heavy flamer for the turret from a sentinal.

Finally, a group shot with another Chimera.

That means my Helskans now have a semi-respectable amount of painted armour. 1 demolisher, 1 armoured basilisk and 4 chimeras. Next up, either two leman russes or a new hellhound and sentinal.

Here's the two new commisars, along with my repainted original, decided to promote him to a full commisar from the cadet with blue trim onpage 1.

Plus, two Leman Russes i finished on sunday.

Currently half way through the last two guys for a special weapon squad but lacking motivation to do them. Still got a Valkyrie to do, plus i still need to buy a demolisher, two sentinals, another commisar, a commisar lord, 2 more valkyries, a baneblade and a shadowsword. Next-up, a quadruple post.

And finally a group shot of the 3 crew together. Havent decided yet what's happened to the other pilot, although the fact i've run out of Valkyrie crew makes it an ongoing mystery.

Here's the WIP on my downed Imperial Navy guys, along with the pilots of my Valkyrie I started painting yesterday. Decided to theme them around the pilots from Top-gun, with green flight-suits and coloured helmets. The downed pilot with the red helmet is Hollywood, while the two downed door gunners don't get to be anyone special. The pilots in the Valykrie are roughly based on Iceman and Slider, although you might not be able to tell from the dodgy pics, Icemans silver helmet does have blue lightning bolts on it, but they didnt show up in the pic.

I suck at doing freehand stuff, even just straight lines and simple shapes, so i'm going to have a second go at tidying them up today, finishing the bases and hopefully finishing the cockpit too.

When I get this Valkyrie done, i have plans for 2 more, plus a FW Vulture and maybe a Vendetta.

Spent all day finishing the Valkyrie... got very annoyed last night when the canopy didnt fit right and had a bit of a hardtime with my first attempt at painting camo on avehicle, but i think it looks ok, although maybe i was a little heavy on the devlan mud.

And finally.... an all action pic of the Valk rescuing the downed crew...

Ordered a few more Commissars so I think they'll be next, might wait a while till i paint my next Valk tho..

The 2-crewmen objective is really characterful indeed!!!

As for the other, I like him much as a mini, but I'm concerned about him as a passive & helpless "objective"... He seems like he had plenty of time to work on wrapping his arm, and seems more than determined to slay whatever made his "mount" kiss the ground earlier than planned... I guess I'd rather see him as a fighting soldier in a somewhat ramshackled squad than like this...

Though it's only my opinion, no serious concern intended uh!!! I bet by stating he's defending his downed comrades I could get over it lol... And the painting's crisp and well-executed, congratulations!

And another Commisar for him to order around. This guy has the arm i didnt use from the Lord figure.

Finally, either the start of an Ogryn squad or simply a bodyguard. Spent a few moments chopping off his stupid looking teeth and i think he looks a bit more fiercesome now. Also chopped off his "bayonet".

Hopefully will undercoat tomorrow and then get some proper paint on them.

Love the rebreather on the Ogryn, you managed to make them look so much like the regular Cadian ones!!!

The cap's nice too, though overall I'm not too fond of the new metal Ogryns...

Phil - still waiting to see your log mate...

Got round to painting the commisars and the ogryn bone'ead. Sorry for the rubbish lighting and photo's.

For the Commisar Lords banner i decided to paint it as a Commisariat banner, hence the black and red... I'm really happy with the overall feel, seems suitably heroic...

Next commisar is pretty standard... not too happy with the power sword though..

And a group shot with one of my earlier guys... this now makes 5 Helskan Commisars, including the lord... I think thats enough to keep my boys in check!

Now for the Ogryn... quite happy with how he turned out, was even the first time i tried painting a models eye properly... other two ogryns are being primed as i speak.

Hope you guys like em, and apologies again for the poor photos... that's what happens when the best light source in my house is built into the oven extractor fan! Must do something about that...

Interesting, at what heat do citadel miniatures start to melt?

Seriously nice work, would like to see the ogryns eye close up, bacause minus the extractor fan the pics do lack a bit of detail. Totally agree about the banner mate, really adds a sense of heroic 'badass' to the piece.
Powersword looks a bit too dark to me, maybe start blending further down the blade and get lighter gradually, think theres another comissar of yours that has a rocking sword, just copying that would be better.

It is a Culuxes, check out the shoulder mounted weapon. Culuxus also had a weird skull faced helmet, just it was massive, so i made a smaller one... and the clawed hand is just meant to be a close combat weapon, not a nuero gauntlet.

Oh, and she has a psyk-out grenade in her hand....

In fairness i can see where the confusion may lie, but this is just my interpretation of an assassin with a butt-ugly official sculpt...

Played some games a few weekends ago, beating an ork army, drawing with eldar and losing to blood angels... bloody mephiston *grumble*

Here's some pics of the boys in action, along with some commentry.

Marbo shouldnt have popped out here.

Orks getting dangerously close

Vets try to assualt ork boys with Col Straken giving them furious charge... and roll double 1 for difficult terrain.

Combined squad get ground down by the Killa Kan, with only the commissar keeping them fighting.

When Straken cant do the job, its upto the Ogryns to charge in and finally destroy the Killa Kan.

Vet squad about to get gunned down by some horrificly accurate ork shooting.

Stretching to hold both objectives.

To be contd. (Game ended before they could fight)

Game ended two objectives to one, would have been 2 - 0 but i couldnt gun down a lone ork gretchin herder with a heavy bolter and an autocannon!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Part 2.

In light of the game i decided to alter my 1500pt army a bit, which required the addition of power swords to the sergeants in the combined squad and a standard bearer in Strakens squad, which will look cool, allow nearby squads to re-roll morale tests and help out in any nearby assualts.

All of which needs painting. I've also made up a manticore, another chimera, a leman russ eradicator and a leman russ punisher with pask. Should keep me busy if the weather will allow me to undercoat them all.

You were lucky against my Orks, I nearly contested the middle of objective by 1/2 an inch ...

Lol, well it was a cracking game and I learnt alot, mainly who Strachen is (he'll be getting gunned down next time) and more importantly about better positioning my Kans so they don't get bogged down by your ruined Chimera's.

Been a bit on the lazy side recently, mainly due to Mass Effect 2 and Halo Reach, but i have managed to finish a few things. First up, a manticore and a 5th chimera.

Im really pleased with the squadron marking on the side of the chimera, my first ever attempt at proper free-hand and i think it looks pretty good.

Finished the power swords on the 3 sergeants.

Painted the Callidus Assassin that i made up about a year ago.

And finally a WIP on a Leman Russ Punisher and an Eradicator. Not the best choices from the codex, but they look cool and i like the idea of both tanks. Ran out of back ink while painting them so try and pick up some more tomorrow.

Hope you guys like em. Started on my Culuxus assassin as well but only painted the armour so far.

The culexus is just messed up, in a very imperial assassin sort of wat. The exorcist is awesome and fits into the existing range very nicely, think it would look better painted (hint).

Post by: Zefig

Wow, the exorcist is basically exactly like something I started working on a couple weeks ago. How about that. Pretty sweet design I must say
How are you connecting the missile pods to the turret? I was considering trying to magnetize it so I could still switch out from immolator guns if the occasion arose. Also, can the turret still turn? I know on mine, and it looks like on yours, the pods end up a bit too low to allow that.

Very nice work on everything else I've seen so far. I'll definitely be taking a look through the rest of the thread when I have a chance.

Post by: lifeofshan

Zefig - I just filed the box on the side down and glued it against where the regular guns would go at. Yeah, the pods are too low to allow the turret to turn, but thats not much of a problem.

Well, been busy over the Xmas period. First up, St Celestine, not my best work on the power sword but it'll do.

Next, an Inquisitor in desperate need of a retinue.

Finished up the Exorcist about an hour ago.

Lined up next to the Immolator i painted a year and a half ago. They're slightly different shades of red but i dont mind a little bit of difference across the vehicles.

And finally a group shot of St Celestine, the Exorcist, the Immolator and a standard Sister of Battle.

Next, two more Cyber Hounds from Inquisitor to be painted up as Arbites dogs, that'll take me to 3 of them which will work as a unit of Arco Flagellents, assuming the minimum squad size is 3... i hope!

Life Of Shans log of all... Adeptus Arbites, Sisters of Battle, IG, World Eaters and more @ 2011/01/04 22:13:05

Post by: Yggdrasil

Wow, St Celestine is nice!!! I especially like the shroud, it looks ancient and weathered!!!

As for the Inquisitor... I have had a hard time finding this awesome mini, but never had the courage to painting for lack of screwing him! But yours is really nice, with a simple scheme, but very efficient...

Only concern is the 40mm bases :

- some opponents will find the size unappropriate for human-sized characters (should be 25mm) ;

- with such a large area, why not use your talent to add some additional scenery to them? That's, to me, the main point in using 40mm bases!

Still, some very good work!

Life Of Shans log of all... Adeptus Arbites, Sisters of Battle, IG, World Eaters and more @ 2011/01/04 22:34:35

Post by: lifeofshan

Yeah i probably should have done something more special with the base. The two Cyber Hounds are going to be done with the same Urban style bases that the rest of the Arbites have, with rubble, pipes, metal sheets etc.

I'm not too worried about having larger bases for my hero characters, just think it makes them look more impressive and helps them stand out.

Good luck with your Inquisitor, let me know when you've worked up the confidence to have a try.

Well, I probably won't reach that threshold of confidence until a long, long time...

Good luck on the Hounds!

(and yeah, don't worry about the 40mm, it DOES make them stand out, so that's great!)

Been working on some more Arbites the last few days to try to help complete my WitchHunters. Assembled two more Cyber Mastiffs that are now undercoated and ready to paint, but as they are identical to the one i paintd before i didnt bother to photograph them.

Then i made an Arbites Mastiff Handler. The device in his right hand is to control the Mastiffs, based on a simple point and click approach. In game i'm probably going to use him as a priest with a shotgun and carapace armour, seeing as you need one to unlock the flaggelents the Mastiffs will represent.

Apologies for the awful paintjob on his body, i bought it like this from ebay and couldnt be bothered to strip it.

Next up is a female Arbite with shotgun. Based of an Escher model and bulked up with green stuffed armour, straps & shotgun that took several days to do. She is somewhat slimmer than the male versions, but looks ok i think. I'm hoping that some of the dodgier areas of the greenstuff will look better with paint on. If all goes well i'll make another one with stub pistol and power maul to represent Shira Calpurnica.

A group shot with a standard Arbite.

Hopefully undercoat them tomorrow when the last of the green-stuff has dried and then start painting them all up.

Finished the Arbites I was working on, the Mastiff Handler, the female Arbite and the 2 remaining cyber-mastiffs.

Not totally happy with the female Arbite, her combat-pants didnt turn out great, but given how much green-stuff is on her I'm happy with my first attempt, might try to make a Shira Calpurnica model in a while if i can find a good base model.

Arbite Handler

Mastiffs, including one with a little rat disappearing down a drain

All Mastiffs with handler

From above so you can see their markings.

And female, handler and random arbite

Well, playing a game against an Eldar army tomorrow and decided i wanted to try a unit of 5 ogryns in a chimera, led by a Lord Commissar.

Only problem is, i only have 3 ogryns.

These guys arrived on friday, whereupon i realised i had no greenstuff.

greenstuff acquired on saturday, then applied, and they were painted over yesterday and today, all ready to face the eldar tomorrow. I have visions of them multi-charging wave serpents and knocking them out of the sky... probably unrealistic visions, but you have to have ambition!

Group shots with the rest of the squad.

Hopefully the Eldar will struggle to deal with these guys, at the very least i hope they get properly stuck in somewhere!

Will take some pics during the game and let you all know how they got on... wish em luck!

After completing 1500pts of Raven Guard, it's back to the Helskans for a period of time.

First on the list, a pair of Hydras. I've been suffering a bit at the hands of transport vehicles and need a reliable long-ranged option to take them out with, rather than relying on plasma and melta guns.

I don't like the ForgeWorld models, but I remembered seeing a converted salamander with a set of quad-heavy stubbers and thought that would make a good alternative. One Forgeworld order, some chimeras and some plasticard later i've got one completed Hydra and one thats nearly there. Hope to get the second one finished and primed tomorrow and then painted by the weekend.

Oh and thanks to the gent who inspired me, I know it was on a forum somewhere and I wish i could remember who it was to give him the credit.

Thanks for the kind words guys, to be honest the guys I play with are really good guys and I doubt any of them would even consider fussing over the counts as... probably safer to stay away from Throne of Skulls though

Managed to finish the second one today, had a hard time finding a suitable head for the gunner seeing as the one supplied with the Sabre was missing in the package. The resin cadians must be slightly smaller than the plastics as the regular heads looked way too big, although the unhelmeted head from the command squad seemed to fit ok.

The two together, ready to noodle any light vehicles that head their way!

Need to get them painted before they see battle next tuesday.

Very nice and good use of the amoured platforms. Nice to see you have a deadline to paint them in, dont lose momentum! What are you planning to work on next?

Hydras are finished!

Really happy with how they turned out, fits my idea of how they should look much better than the forgeworld version.

Next up, gonna try and convert a vendetta!

Mate, Hydras are the win! Killed 3 Killa kans in a single round of shooting yesterday alone. Heavy flamers on support vehicles are great, especially against outflanking units, killed a unit of commandos and a unit of wolf scouts yesterday, something heavy bolters would not have done
