1000pts are quick and easy. You can easily get a couple of friendly games in a small matter of time, yet still big enough conflict to be fun.
Also good for a tournament.

I've played mostly 1500 pts because that is what the size is set up for at tournaments at the LGS I go to. I've played maybe one 2000pt game and didn't feel much of a difference. I've played a 500pt game for a campaign and thought it was interesting but wanted more. I've played a 1000 pt game for another campaign and, like the 500pt game, seemed kind of small for my tastes. I wonder if it depends on what you mostly play (tournaments, casual, campaign, or other).

I like 1750pts because you get that extra couple of units and the game doesn't become unruly like at 2000+ pts. 2 hour play time is still very realistic and objective scenarios become a little more exciting.

2000 points although I do love games much, much higher. This provides a much funner and longer game than lower points as I usually get bored by turn 3-4 of small games since all you really have are usually a few assaults and a couple of units left to shoot.

1850 because everyone has a 1500 list that extra 350 is often for fun units with our casual group. As far as competitive goes I really like 1500 it seems to be the point where all the lists are at the most balanced; getting up to 2k the newer codex's really start to dominate.

I remember when Rogue Trader tournaments went from 1500 to 1850. It was like, "well what do I throw in now?" The points difference generally equalled an extra character and a tank. Sometimes a LR, but that was rare. These young whipper-snappers now throw a LR into every game they can, but then again that's 5th for you (which is a good thing).

As a bug player 1k does a lot for me. It's quick, easy, I can get in all the guys I like, and it's all done from set up to tear down in 2 hours. Also since I coach a lot of new players it's big and fun for them and allows a lot more time for discussion in game without it turning into a 4 hour match.

I actually tend to like both ends of the spectrum. I find the quick 750 point or less games are a great way to get a few casual games in and test out some units. It's actually pretty fun.
However, the big Apocalypse games are a lot of fun too. Basically plan a summer weekend around them. Fill up the fridge with beverages and the freezer with meat and off you go. Play a turn, have a pint, toss a ball around or go for a walk, play another turn, cook something, do another turn, go in the hot tub. Makes for a descent weekend.
The only problem I run into with the smaller games tends to be the people I play with. I can do a lot with 500 points of Orks, field some fun units and have plenty of variety. Folks with elite armies don't have that luxury when they're paying three times as much for units as I am. To that end, we usually go around 1000 points for smaller games and restrict the lower points games to seeing if things will work.

When I played, I usually went for around 1000-1500. 1500 is my preferred size though, as it gives you enough room to get some cool units, but you often don't get everything you want in your list. Choosing what to leave out and having to deal with it in the game is a challenge that I think makes games more interesting than just slapping everything you want on the table and duking it out (although that's okay too every once in awhile).

2000. You can field a really well-rounded army, have a couple of fun units, and 1 or 2 bad dice rolls won't lose you the game. I don't play anything under 1500 as a general rule. If I'm going to go through the hassle of setting up, I want some strategy and tactics involved. Anything under 1000 is determined entirely by a couple dice rolls or an army list. Between 1000 and 1500 tactics start to come into play. When you get to 2000 you really have to think about what you're going to shoot first, where you need to assault or avoid assault, etc. Much more emphasis on strategy than dice rolls or cheesing out an army list. I'm not bitter about getting owned in small point battles. I was the jerk who put a Looted Leman Russ into a 500 point game back in 4th edition. I just didn't think it was fair for me to kill their only Lascannon on the first shot of the game and win by default.

500? Now that is an interesting choice, Personally I hate 500 point games, they go by so quick, you can't even get into it before the game is over, not to mention it allows little to none tactical flexibility. It always seems like 500 point games are solely based around dice rolls rather than overall strategy, either that or it comes down to who has the better army to play a 500 point game.
Seeing as this is your favorite point value you must have some interesting tactics set up for these games, I would love to hear them.

I found 1250 good for a shorter game but it requred me to pick more carefully of what I needed and not what I wanted. At 1500 I didn't have a decent army with extra points to fill with something and my army was unbalanced. At 1850 I have a good size army with some upgrades and the play time wasn't much longer then at 1250.

I'm a lover of Apoc, it trims down the 'balance issues' nicely between the armies and allows things to be more 'fun' and less 'competitive'. At least that's how it works between my group of 40k players. People expect to lose lots of models in Apoc, so there isn't as much angst when something goes awry

I'm limited to smaller point games by the size of my armies. If I throw all the models I can on the table with no regard for the viability of the list (but still adhering to Codex unit/upgrade restrictions and the FOC), I can field 1500pts. of SM (with a few leftovers) and 1000pts. of Orks (with even more leftovers - just not enough to hit the 1500 mark).
I went with 1000pts. for the poll, because that's what I could comfortably field with either of my armies. I imagine that will change once I have sufficient models and get a few bigger games under my belt.

Post by: skullking
I'm all about 2000 points.
i think it stems from when you had to have at least 2k to run some special characters, although, that isn't an issue anymore. It just feels like a good solid battle. I've had decent games as low as 1500pts. But anything below is kind of pathetic in my opinion. it kind of defeats the purpose of 40k, I think people just do it to see if they can actually play a game and feel satiated afterward.
Huge games can be a bit too much as well, once you get past 3K and you're not playing apocalypse, it just seems silly as well.
If they made really low point units for all of the armies, kind of like Apocalypse has high cost units for Larger games, I think smaller point games would make more sense. Unfortunately, there are lots of armies like deamons, and most marines which just don't run well at low point levels.

Limited time at my school club means 1000-point games are the most popular, not lasting too long, but still offering chances to upgrade some units and make it interesting.
AIf we don't have time for a full game, my friends and I often create scenarios with a troop choice and a HQ per side, making it a quick-and-dirty skirmish.

Having a 3.5k Nids army and 6k Tau army small games just get repetitive, don't last long enough, and you gotta cram the funnest parts of your army into such small increments. 1500 is my preffered low, 3000 is my average (not apoc, just expanded) but anywhere in between works fine too. Lately I've been playing 1250 with my bud and his wolves (unfortunatly thats all he has atm) but I just never get any satisfaction out of such a small game.

also more like the smaller 1000-1750 point games. Probably cause Tau suck at high point value, or because I have to proxy stuff over 2000 points
Once played a 3 way battle, 2000 each, so 6000, but found it taking too long already. I think there's less tactic involved in such a game, as you just fill the entire board...

1500. Yo can pick a good amount of units but you have to make a couple of hard decisions in what to take out and this for me is part of the game. 2000+ points means a crowded table you can put basically everything you want and the games tend to be dominated by firepower and saturation and not so in manouvering and tactics. This is the part I like the most of the game hence I prefer 1500 pts mostly.

Voted 1500. We typically play 1500 or 2k, I prefer 1500 because you can get a good solid list in without being able to resort to b.s.
I played a 1250 tournament recently which was really nice. I like the whole figuring out what to give up aspect. Forces you to play harder, but you still have options.
On occasion we have 5-8 people show up at the house, and only having two tables we down grade to 1k or lower. It's more or less a house rule that anything under 1k is foot-slogging only, with rare exception. It's the only way to keep the small ones fun imho.

2000 or 1500. I find that brings alot more tactics into the game .

Not a lot of people play 1750, but I like it alot. 2000 usually takes too long for me and 1500 doesnt feel like you can get as much as stuff as you want in an army

I voted 1500 because it's perfect I feel like the games themselves are more well rounded. But I play 1-1250 with my roommate who is learning the game, I think the lower point games are definitely better for newer players, less clutter.

750pnts. Quick, tons of different and unique lists, fun, can play like 3 games in one afternoon, usually nothing ever to overpowering from any dex at that level.

I usually play 850, not as small as 500, but not as long lasting as 1000 or higher.

I like 1500 the most, but I think I'd like 1750 if I played it more.
All the tournaments around here are 2k usually, but I'm just not as much of a fan as it seems to take noticeably more time than 1500.

200 Point Kill Teams.
Then 500+ Point games. I just like playing 40k.

I voted Other, because me and my friends usually play to the tournament-standard 1850 points even in casual games. I guess 1850 wasn't common back when this poll was started (sorry if this is necromancy).
