I prefer an Ice World theme for my tables, fighting under harsh winter conditions always adds a bit more appeal to the game.

Urban.
Doesn't matter if it's a desert world slum or a inner-systems hive world. As long as there are buildings of a high density to fight among, I am happy.

That said, I also have an ice world set of terrain for my SM army which I call my "Hoth playset".

Not really any preferences, just fight where I am encountering something opposing....
but well done terrain is a good way to distract me from the game.

At home , has to be urban. Have some buildings but not much vegetation.

What I keep seeing in my head is a WW1 hellhole of mud, trenches and barbed wire. A field that looks flat and nearly barren at first glance, before you see the trench networks and redoubts.
A sort of hell in which the Death Korps would feel at home.

My own is sorta steppes/mountains style terrain, lots of tall rocks, cliff faces, hills with forest pieces. It looks nice and its funs to play on, but at times its quite basic.

Probably why I'm working on City fight terrain on the side.

Although I think my favourite style would be a Space Hulk theme. I have always wanted to do one, but it really needs a fixed 3-D board to do it justice.

As soon as I have a place where I can say that room is for the Space Hulk themed board, it will be done.

Urban and daemon environments are my fav's.

Demon worlds usually take more effort and creativity. Even though I haven't seen enough of them, I'll pick demons.

I am currently building a modular valley table. It will be interchangeable (thanks to the wonder of removable hills with trenches in, and replacement hills with no trenches in) between a kind of WWI table for 40K, and just a muddy valley for WHFB.

I do like city boards, they are fun to play on, but I chose forests as my favourite. I like a lightly forested board with a few buildings, usually a bastion and a skyshield pad or something.

I like urban city type tables, because I like the assaults from the windows of buildings, and blockades on the roads, I just think it looks cool

Aslong as it is nice and flat for my bike to get through im good.
But if anything plains would be preferred.

Whatever looks cool is good, doesn't matter what pseceifc type, although I do have a soft spot for cities.

Daemon World Terrain.

Nothing like fighting on a planet that wants to rip the feth right outta yah.

I hate trees. And my game store is infested with em. Granted we can take em off, but I get one guy that wants to play in the forest. Too dang hard to get my Orks through that.

Although I have nothing against trees and the hippies that seem to always infest them, urban games always seem to have more tactical options which leads to a funner game for all involved imo.

Mine's a mix of Urban and Desert- the battlefield I play on most of the time is meant to be an abandoned small Imperial settlement in what now is a wasteland with very little life remaining.

It's a good mix of open ground and tight areas of cover- makes for great battles for objectives.

I have based all my nids on a ash/death with a little snow world [examples are in 4th edition rules book].

But I havent played on a grass table or daemon world for such a long time, I almost crave it

I play Tyranids so I need the cover that city ruins provide.

I went other. I'm working on a 'crystal forest' style playing board to match my dark eldar and the planet they spend a reasonable amount of time on. So purple plains studded with crystals, a sort of greeny teal coloured ocean and tint to the rivers, odd mushroom style trees... I'm trying to make it look alien. There may be at least one hive and some agriculture on it, but that doesn't mean it needs to look like Mars or Terra.

I like Urban, but the WWI hell hole sounds very appealing as well.

I like a bit of a mix so I had to pick "other". I want a hill here, a copse of trees there, a building there, etc. I like clearly defined area terrain and clearly defined LOS block terrain. Less arguements about cover saves that way

A nice mix of "natural" features and buildings. My table features a small Imperial outpost and some crags. It's a desert table.

Lots of terrain is always the best in my books and an Urban map will always deliver that, so that's why I voted urban.

I like 3 or 4 big pieces, maybe one hill per deploy zone, some big woods, and a couple of buildings or rubble layin here n there. I don't like cluttered city boards because assault is already overly powerful in this game without what I call 'Teleporting through terrain' where troops can run through a gap between blocks and you never even get a shot off before they are right on top of you. Since the disappearance of overwatch rules, I have tried to play on simple boardsa as best as possible. The rulebook tells us approximately 1/4 = terrain. Some players (usually with assault armies) take this very literally and insist on it. That's fine. But what KIND of terrain? one big wood copse and a couple of low hills and craters greatly benefits a shooty army, while a wad of buildings greatly benefits an assaulty army.

i preffer a plain set of terrain that has hills and maybe a river (that counts as dangerous terrain ) and not too much going on. that makes it a bit easier and i also like that sort of setting. urban style cityfightin would be okay if only the bases on the platforms would be easier to move my models around. (and if GW would not make all buildings ruins!)

I think that lots of 'city' votes come up is because of the GW terrain sets they push most. C'mon people! Go get some fishtank turf! way cheaper.... speaking of cheapass cities, the origional Necromunda box had some cool buildings made out of interlocks and card. Wish I still had.

The best way to desrcibe what I preer to play on is... Suburbia.
A mix of buildings, wooded areas, hills, maybe a road or 2.

I wish I could pick snow urban.

I always love replicating Stalingrad with my many Ig troops hiding and dying, doing what they do best. Most entertaining when fighting SM and I can make the Nazi supermen jokes.

Also jungle has some appeal. My one friend does a brilliant Richard Nixon impersonation so whenever we play in jungle and he starts losing he yells "raid the college campuses, get me more students for troops." Always funny.

Nothing really beats a good sloppy urban battle. Odd things can happen and cities are great equalizers when facing any army. Very few 40k armies are at an advantage here.

I don't care what kind of terrain is on the table. But I do love terrain. I like terrain more than the minis, I think. I think my preference is for interactive terrain. I want my marines to be able to climb on/over, run around in, and generally interact with the terrain as much as possible.

I'm a strong proponent of city boards. If done well, with care taken into the creation....imagination to add some 3D environments(walkways to upper levels...etc), city boards are simply the best in helping you get a feel for the world that exists in 40k.

I love urban terrain and make my own. I dream of finishing a dense city that takes up a whole 6'x4' board.

I prefer jungles and such. That being said I like to play on tables were you have as much to fear from the enviromen as you do your opponent

City urban. The thought of battling through a ruined Imperial hive city and flattening it is somehow appealing to me, adds to the bleakness imho. Giant city-planets with tens of billions of inhabitants,blasted to hell and now fought for inch by inch. mmmmm thats good ham

Much prefer a full on claustrophoic cities of death type board. While it hurts me because I run my army shooty mechanised, I just love the imagery and playstyle that it induces, short close range firefights or deadly assaults followed by a shooting phase that wipes out the assaulters. Just love it.

Snowy fields look better through my eyes. I always think peaceful music when battles take place on them, no matter how violent and heated the carnage is, the snow always freezes it to graceful silence.

I like city/urban the best. Plus it helps to give my Boyz as much cover as possible for that massed assault.

It might be weird that I like this but I prefer an icy urban deamon world (City ruins sinking in lava while covered with snow, and there are piles of snow and lava cracks everywhere).

City/Urban. All the walls may get in the way of my shooting, but I love the multiple levels of fire that the city terrain provides. But then I started wargaming with Necromunda, so maybe I am just a little nostalgic.

I like desert with plenty of rocks and ruins.

I also like the Imperium ruins, that gothic style. I don't know where best they'd fit though, as I'm not keen on urban.

Much more of an City/Urban table person. All the little details you can add can be ridiculous.

A friend of mine built some really nice terrain pieces, especially urban ruins and some forests. So we usually conjugate these two style on our battlefields.

I really like the open plains when pulled off well, Agri areas are pretty sweet too, but i love gaming on "Military Instillations"; Firebases, Fortified positions, Task-Master bases etc.

I really don't have a favorite....i like all types of terrain, as each has its own flavor, that said, i find my strategies work best in urban

Urban as cities are where the majority of battles will be fought...and I don't mean 6 or 7 buildings on a 4' x 6'. I mean CoD here.

It really depends on what game system being played.

Urban, it not only looks cool, but gernally makes the most sense because most battles on planets would be fought over the material/people/supplies contained within a city. Not all of them, but most. It gives me a feeling that more is at stake in a battle whereas fighting in a forest or desert just makes me think "So why is this a tactically important place?"

because they got ambushed on the way to something important (annihalation) or because there are hiden artifacts or the wreckage of a crash

i prefer anything other then cities TBF as i play cities alot (and some units become un touchable at the top of ruins making them broken slightly lol)

Ice worlds, though not just barren ice wolds, winter cities, alien ice forests, icy mountains etc.

Unfortunatly you don't see many ice boards around...

I voted city/urban. Anything to break up the incoming hordes of daemons and SW to bring them into bottlenecks laced with lash princes and Thousand Sons is nice.

My next terrain set will be jungle ruins. I want to make a ton of sandstone looking ruins packed to the gills with modern equipment, covered in vines with some heavy vegetation around. I'm thinking some kind of lab or something where CSM were trying to manipulate stolen gene seed or something that has fallen to ruin would be neato.

I hate urban terrain. The models are really hard to place on it and there is wayyyyy too much cover

Just for looks, I like any type of style. Gameplay wise I love urban warfare type stuff... it reminds me of Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon.

For 40k Urban all the way. Preferably ruined, long abandoned urban.

For Warmahordes I prefer a more natural terrain setup. Ice, plains, forests, desert, whatever.

Made my own abandoned dwarf mines! They turned out really great. It Makes me really want to make more terrain, I never realized how fun it is.

I hve always had a strange fascination with ice boards. Maybe it's because some of the first models I payed with at Games Day LA were Valhallans vs Space Wolves on an epic snow board. However, none of my armies have a snow theme so there really is no point to have them fight on a snow board. We made a Mars/Australia looking board with some ruins. I ike the urban look but more of ruins and scraps and bombed out shelters etc as opposed to a glistening city.

Deserts, with sweeping sand dunes and arid ponds, maybe a tribal village of somesort, i like it when it brings to mind films such as 'sea of sand' or Ice cold in Alex

Urban/industrial, all the way. The more like a sprawling forgeworld industrial nightmare, the better, in my opinion. It's the most interesting to look at, and seems to sum up the 40k vibe for me, personally. Although it has to be said that bleak, muddy, WWI trench system type terrains also rock hard.

Urban/ winter/ grassland mashup

I'm kind of stuck by playing Tau.

My Kroot love a lot of forest on the board due to their Fieldcraft ability (They get a 3+ cover save in the woods and trat it as clear terrain).

My Vespids are awesome in a crowded board because they reroll the difficult terrain checks they get whenever they land in area terrain, their save is only a 5+ without cover and the range ont heir weapons is similar to that of a spitwad.

On the other hand my Tau already have armour of 4+ are better so they don't need the cover save and the long range of their weapons demands as clear a line of sight as possible to be effective. Their Jetpacks and Skimmers, while being able to move over terrain really easy, are prone to taking damage if they stop inside it.

Ash Wastes are my favorite, it is the only terrain my camouflage actually works and gives my enemies fewer places to hide from my battle cannons.

Urban, there's just something about marching my deathless warriors through the remains of civilization killing all in their path-not that that actually happens all that often,- and I think City fighting is more interesting.

I also like Trenchworks boards, might have to make one for myself...

I like urban style battlefields; think city/castle/fortress siege. An urban setting is hard to pull of in fantasy but if done right it looks amazing.

My friends made a board for a show game for a Bretonnian peasent rebellion, They based it on the ST Albans battles in the wars of the roses, it looked pretty cool.

I'm stuck between urban and woodland environments, but ultimately I voted urban.

I make a lot of my own terrain, which as of now is all urban. I want to get some woodland stuff put together but unfortunately that's harder/more expensive to do.
