I'm looking forward to be able to say "I played Ogryns before they were cool" in the near future...

But, yeowch, those are models expensive!

I'm not sure I'd buy them, maybe convert something up instead?

See Ogre Kingdom Bulls - plastic, plenty of room to work with.

Bah I am hoping that Ogryns, although they get some sort of boost, don't become the new spam unit to see. I'd still like my IG army to be about the wave upon wave of desperate troops......that's just me though maybe.

There is a part of me that agrees. It is thematically interesting to have an army of cannon fodder. It's just not practical to ask a player to purchase 3x as many models in order to play a game though. It's also not practical to ask an opponent who was not pre-arranged (see tournament or FLGS) to sit through lengthy deployments and 3+ hour games.

You will certainly be able to field a massive number of troops when this new book comes out. If you want to play competitively, my guess is that your points will likely need to be spent elsewhere. Playing a friendly "set-up" game, especially a narrative style game lends itself to underpowered troop heavy armies, and large points sizes. About half of my all-time most memorable games have been with pre-set narrative style armies, the other half are knock-down, drag-out competitive games.

They are still going to have 6 troops slots... and at least 25 models per troop slot. You'll have access to the horde, just like orks do. But also like orks, you won't see competitive armies running any more than around 60-80 'troop' models.

I was thinking more along the lines of armored exo-skeletal systems.

...

I run 60 basic troop models in every game I play and I play space marines. You've never seen a green tide army before have you?

But there is no reason for this. I have played a many a horde armies, Orks Nids IG, and have NEVER had long games. Speedhammer is a game I thoroughly enjoy and if someone is taking that long something is seriously wrong. As long as both players know the rules, stop long rule debates or what not, and both players come prepared there is no reason a 1k game shouldn't take half an hour. 2k 1hr to 1 1/2 hours. If it is taking longer than that than there is a breakdown in communications or the person hasn't planned out and anticipated his opponents move. Force the opponent to do what you want them to do and react...plan as the person does there move and execute. People get use to taking there time to much and/or milk the clock for no reason....

I've seen a green tide. I playtested with it while assembling a massive ork army for a friend. I've played against and with 180 boys in 1750 games. It's not as good as any ork list that focuses on power units. Shoota boys are the best troops in the game, but they are not so good as to be more valuable than nobs, lootas, kommandos, kans, kannons, or battlewagons.

My typical ork list is 60 boys, 20 grots, 45 lootas with either 9 kannons and 2 SAGs, or 9 kans and 2 KFF meks. Both iterations of that list would seriously ruin a guy who played with 6x30 orks.

Are you a tourney player Shuma? And do you play with 60 troops at tournaments? If you are, and you do, and you do well... I will be very surprised.

some possibly good news... the advance order part of the 40k website seems to have disappeared and the orks have moved to the new release section. will some IG be popping up there soon??? how long were the orks up in that section? i didn't actually pay attention to that part until the guard rumors started flying.

Expect the next advance order stuff to be WoTR ring stuff and/or Shadowswords & Stompas

We won't see new Guard stuff on there until late March I'd guess.

I play when I can, and I do alright. Not to boast, but I would probably do well against the quick list you provided. My force is primarily ranged anti infantry/light vehicle with a fast assault element. I don't rock paper scissors very well though, high armor armies kick my ass.

That's one thing that always kinda got me about the guard. Always so much room left in the force org. Really, it's almost like they have their own force org chart in the way you points out your models.

I'm not even sure why that bugs me, but it does, a bit.

Hah. I remember being bored one day and making an airmobile army with maxed out everything. Got to over 16,000 points.

I cannot 100% confirm it, but AFAIK command squads will be able to give actual orders to the units under their command. I assume this might well be limited in some fashion to those in their platoon only.

These have different affects, ones I have heard about being some form of suppressive fire that lessens the chance to hit but lowers/ignores enemy cover saves, and another one (defensive stance/fire ?) that puts the platoon onto overwatch.

I'll say again, I'm not 100% certain of these, but it' from a source that has been good in the past.

Holy god.... IG with overwatch. Can you imagine what would happen to a demon army that strikes near an IG ARMY on overwatch..... Makes since, how else do you protect guardsmen from drop pods, demons, deep striking or podding or teleporting bad guys who can then fleet into a spread out charge position....

Speaking of IG vs. demon drops, played against Khorne a week or so ago with my IG. My deployment was stupid, but I was bright enough to put both Inquisitors near the Demolisher. That thing earned it's points, lemme tell ya! Squad of termies, gone. Oblits, gone. More termies, GONE!

Right now, I start with a trio of Demolishers surrounding a Land Raider containing an Inquisitor with 2 Mystics... Anything that DS near either Mystic allows me to have *any* unit nearby (i.e. a Demolisher) take a free shot. S10 AP2 Pie is a pretty darn good answer, IMO.

This won't change in the IG Codex, because it depends on the DH Codex, which won't be updated until the Pups and Necrons at a minimum. Probably, Inquisition doesn't get redone until after Sisters, and Dark Eldar (assuming that GW ever decides to re-address them).

I feel pretty darn confident about my IG dealing with Deep Strikers for the foreseeable future.

That has become my new unit in every IG list now...a cheap inquisitor w/ Mystics and heavy bolter Servitors. Toss on a Psycannon and let the good times roll

I ran two of them with dual mystics each. When you roll your 4d6 for range, is that every time someone DS's in that you want to take a shot at, or is it once for the inquisitor at the start of the game, or what?

Yeah, but it sucks that you have to take allies from a different codex in order to not be killed. The Guard codex should be able to stand on its own.

I think that's something the studio is keen to ensure. An oddity I notice between UK and USA lists is the astonishing number of the latter that fold in allies etc --especially the mystic coven. Don't really see that over here and you wouldn't be able to do it at (most) tournies here.

Did you see the recent Thunderfire datasheet ? I assume the overwatch would/will work like that.
