@Tim the Biovore - Maybe not excessive...but still big
@Hyenajoe - I know, I tell you I can feel it!
@Tortured Robot - I know I know, sorry but I am stuck on the vehicles till the Hirst Arts moulds arrive in a container from overseas...it's frustrating me more then a little as well.
@Anung un Rama - He is pretty much for fun, in apoc games I figure I can run him as a Daemon Prince and in friendlies I hope to use him in a "traitor guard" list but I have no idea yeat if people will go for it. I mainly just liked the verminlord image and wanted to build my version of it, I can't believe how goofy looking the GW verminlord is!
@darth bob - I don't have the Apoc book, I will have to check out my local club's copy ofr the character you mentioned. I'm not too worried about what rules to use, he is just a ton of fun to build.
@Lebaron - Thanks!
@commander Cain - I hope so too, I'm leaning towards a dirty white look, kinda like a reanimated corpse.
@Captain Klaw - Was pretty worried that I would pull them off! I was worried they were too thin then I had a look at other hoofed animals and saw how thin the lower shin is on them, all the foot bones fused together into a thin column, very different from the mammalian foot structure. I figure if they still don't work I can always add more GS, maybe some fur though I would like to stay clear of fur on the model as it won't fit with the undead flesh look I am going for.
I got some more work done on the tail, skull and glaive tonight. The big job was sculpting a lower jaw and finishing off the muzzle of the skull the rest were just minor fixes so I haven't taken pics..TBH I am hammered after a long week, Fathers Day is hell when you work in retail.
Sorry people no real update tonight, between studying and Fathers Day I didn't get very far.
I am about as far along on the VerminLord as I can get without the horns that I hope to get of a friend, if that falls through I may just pick up a box of WFB Chaos Warriors and chop up a couple of heads. I have seen a pretty cool SM conversion using their legs so the box wouldn't be a total waste.
On the Rat Ogryn front I painted up the second one I converted finally and am currently bidding on an online auction for two of the Island of Blood Rat Ogres + master moulder. Hopefully I can get them and will have my Rat Ogryn squad done and dusted.
I also spent a bit of time clipping and sorting and have half a dozen Stormvermin with lasguns ready to be glued up and painted, so the weekend wasn't a total bust just no pictures.
Sorry readers no work done tonight! I have been reluctantly immersing myself in the workings of New Zealand's government for my "Intro to Law" paper.
I kind of feel like beating my head against a wall to unlearn everything I just read, nothing makes you feel older then learning how a parliament works..AND BEING INTERESTED!
But do not fear I am pushing hard to get through the papers as soon as possible so that I will have a few weeknights and the weekends free for modelling and painting.. oh yeah and spending time with the family (I keep forgetting that one )
I do have a question for everyone and I have seen the same issue rise up on other sculpting threads so I thought I would get the jump on it...
...Do I add a loincloth to the Verminlord or do I stick with a genderless lump on the groin.. I like the silhouette of the model as it is but he's not a superhero wearing a costume, he is a naked Rat Daemon so a loincloth is probably suitable.
What do you all think, To Loincloth or Not To Loincloth?
It doesn't appear to have one on the illustration... Nor do the actual vermin lord model have one (though that model is uglier than the old slann), there is just fur.
But what are you gonna use it as? IG have no MC, do they?
My god, rat swarms, mutated blade-armed rats the possibilites....
@saintspirit - thats part of the dilemma there is no loincloth in the pic, and daemons appear fully formed out of the warp, so there is no need for genitals (except the slaneesh daemons I guess) so I think I could get away without one. And no IG have no MCs, I will run him as a Daemon Prince in Apoc.
And yes Manaknok, you probably should stop there
I can't believe I am discussing the merits of covering imaginary Daemon genitals, its a strange world
BLACKHAND wrote:@saintspirit - thats part of the dilemma there is no loincloth in the pic, and daemons appear fully formed out of the warp, so there is no need for genitals (except the slaneesh daemons I guess) so I think I could get away without one. I'd go with the loincloth, unless you pull off a fur effect all over the body to hide the issue.
Last bit on 'mother rat'...the artist of the comic was one Ian Milller....who....did Realm of Chaos and 1st Ed. WH40K! (I'm not totally random-though I didn't know that a few moments ago).
Skavenids do sound pretty cool! Would fit a swarm army....,
I guess its settled then I will go for the loincloth, I have made a determination to not use fur anywhere on the model, not a fan of the "yeti" look.
@ghosty - I've seen some pics of a brood mother but I can't think of a way of using one iin the army, I will already end up with a verminlord that I can only use in 1 in 10 games
Lol, sorry Manaknok it's not personal ( how could it be personal? I only have your avatar to go on and so I think of you as an anthropomorphic Egyptian deity with the head of a mongoose typing away at his computer )
I guess I'm just not a furry teats kind of guy
As for the Daemon I will be giving him the Glaive from the pic in the skaven army book, I figure that can stand in for a daemon weapon but I will have to have a good look through the daemon codex for which powers and marks to give him though nurgle will probably be an appropriate choice.
Haha. Don't worry....I wasn't offended at all by it, I didn't mean to hijack the discussion either....
I've never actually seen inside the Skaven Codex, but I looked up a Glaive and that would look pretty cool (as I type now I recall he is already armed with one!).
Will be watching with a keen eye for the markings...
Nice job on the wyrdgun, are you going to add something else on the gun (teeth or small animals skulls) ?
The loincloth of the verminlord is great with the skull and Kroot spikes, yet I'm not sure about the belt, there's something that doesn't seem right with it, unfortunately I can't point exactly what (sorry ).
Anyway, this is going to be an amazing model, great job!
I know what you mean HyenaJoe, I had a thought on the way to work today and I think I will peel off the belt and find myself some jewellers chain to replace it. The belt was done with the same method I used for my Sabre Legion Marine's ornaments and it's just not quite right.
Very slick conversion Blackhand... you should make a mold of the finished product so you can cast them! Though... don't know if you'll really need that many plasmas to be worth the effort.
Lol, I have a pack of six coming from GW unfortunately they are also metal but I think I can convert up six of them no worries.
The main problem I have now is to decide between Melta Vets or Plasma Vets. I might just have to go with a squad of each and maybe a command squad with a general and four Plasma Vets, that always makes marine players hesitate before charging in
Never underestimate the determination of a force that is so bat-sh*t crazy that it will arm it's best troops with weapons that will, on average... kill most of them by back-firing every battle.
I was searching around the site the other day and I had a thought...surely the Horned Rat would have some human followers/fanatics in the 40k universe, no? These models from the Necromunda range would fit well with your army, I think.
Gitsplitta wrote: Never underestimate the determination of a force that is so bat-sh*t crazy that it will arm it's best troops with weapons that will, on average... kill most of them by back-firing every battle.
Of course, but...
1. I cannot resist having Rapid-fire, Str 7 AP 2 weapons!!!
2. Plasmaguns have one of the most fantastic look of the 40k weaponry!!!
3. The overheating & probabilities to hurt oneself is so much like Skaven...
Some even whisper, in the darkest Mechanicum vaults of Mars, that the much-revered plasma weapon STCs were created by some weird beings, with awful rat-like features, that called themselves Skaven Warlock Engineers... Or so I have heard...
But shhhhhh... "Thee shan't take heed to mere rumours and madmen ramblings..."
Blackhand....yeah...I agree with the human follows (see page 1)! They will look great...as I have never seen the Caller on a table top (or in real life...)
What is the eh...Rat Dreadnought? Sentinel? I have never seen it before!
Don't panic! I'm still working on the 40skaven, have just been distracted with study and a small side project I am working on for a fellow dakkite.
This weekend is our gaming club day and I should be picking up the chaos warrior helms from a friend and next week the two IoB Rat Ogres will arrive and will get the Ogryn treatment so I will have some more pics and WIPS for you in the long wait for my borrowed hirst arts moulds
@tortured robot - I actually have a bunch of sabretooth tiger skeletons in the right scale made of plastic as well as three sets of sentinel legs.....but I need to finish the list I started first!
So todays Gaming Club day was a mixed bag, on one hand one of the organiser ( a friend of mine and fellow Dakkite Andyfish) put a link to this plog in the monthly email so there was a lot of interest in my skaven which was gratifying and there was much showing off and bigheadedness On the other hand the guys from Redzeed Gamers ( the model store that brings their product from a town 2 hours to sell at our club day, thanks guys!) were unable to come so I was not able to get my hands on my IG special weapons :( luckily they are going to send them to me free of charge next week ( thanks again guys!)
Despite this I had an excellent time as it was our annual Swap Meet and I was able to get my hands on a drop pod and 5 lightning clawed terminators for my Sabre Legion marines, but thats a story for another blog
"Thats nice BLACKHAND, but what about the horns for the VerminLord?" I hear you say.
Well I could go on (no really I could) but I think I will let the pics do the talking...
So please keep in mind I added the horns while sitting in a poorly lit community hall talking with my mates so it is not by any finished but it is definitely getting there and I am quite happy with how it looks, I like the how close to the illustration in the army book it came out.
At this point I am going to spend a bit of time sanding and cleaning up the GS work before I get into painting as I am notorious for rushing the end of a project and not being happy when its finished bear with me though it won't be tooooo long before I get paint on this hellbeast.
Automatically Appended Next Post: oh, I love the idea of using the ratskins as human renegades - thats cool and adds a lot of character - And the giant robotic rat is nice - where's it from?
That looks pretty cool. A bit plain maybe, he could use some more bitz.
Oh and you should totally use that Clan Skyre Rat Ogre, maybe as that one Ogryn Bodyguard. Norg something.
And how can any self-respecting Skavenplayer not use that giant undead rat-thing from Necromunda?
@Whalemusic - Don't worry I haven't forgotten the Sabre Legion I've just been distracted by rats, so many rats!
@Anung Un Rama - ATM the Only thing i am thinking of adding is a a necklace of teeth and skulls like the illustration, I kind of like the fact he isn't covered in spines, armour or sores like a normal Daemon Prince but if you have a cool suggestion I could be persuaded
As for the Undead Rat, I think I would rather build one myself but again, its a project for another day!
That head looks ace, you've managed to get some fantastic clear ridges on it, and it looks really believably like an animal skull - no easy feat for an imaginary beast! How do you get such amazingly clean lines using GS? I've been trying to do something similar for aaages
Blackhand, are you going to at least sculpt some fine hair or somthing, or is he going to be a giant bald goat horned rat?
Not that thats bad neccesarily, disturbing is probably the right direction here
@scarper - I use paint blenders, they are like paint brushes with silicone tips, to blend GS together and smooth out cracks and , I 'm a little ashamed to say, the tip of a hobby knife. I probably should get some better tools but they have worked alight so far.
@trilobite - I imagined him as having the look of corpse-like flesh( a nod to Papa Nurgle) and the skull is stripped of skin, just a bare goat skull on top of a walking corpse. At least that's what the illustration said to me, I realize it is very different to the current Verminlord model but they suck anyway
I see, thinking about it, rats and disease are go together pretty well. This should look very interesting and rather sinister. What pleases me even more is that instead of having all the ugly sores and pus that most typical nurgle models have, it will be much more clean, even elegant, like a true virus. Me like!
Hey people! Another post to apologise for lack of progress, study, RL and all that.
Good news is that I have arranged to trade some of my custom SM marine pads for some lascannons with another Dakka member and I think I will be able to change my list slightly.
What do you all think about dropping the three sentinels in exchange for a Vendetta? 3 slow moving single lascannons VS 3 T/L Lascannons moving much faster that can carry troops.
I kind of have a visual in my mind of a talller version of the other vehicles with a much larger chunk of rock hanging below it, like an inverted mountain almost.
@Waaghlord -
Dear Waaghlord,
I apologise unreservedly, I sometimes forget to hide my awesomeness from lesser mortals
totally taking the piss, BLACKHAND.
Glad you like the Verminlord, there were moments I didn't think it would work too but I am happy with it now.
IaB Rat Ogres arrived today as well as the IaB master moulder and the Special Weapon packs!
I have made a start on the Rat Ogryn but have limited time to work on them tonight.
I've got to say I really feel that GW should have updated their plastic Rat Ogre box rather than re-realsing a bunch of ancient looking metals cause these new ones are beautiful!!
Well I hope to get some pics up tonight, till then...well...nothing really
Cheers
BLACKHAND
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok made some progress with the new Rat Ogryns, first up is the sword arm guy,
I decided on a heap swap between them, it allowed me to do a bit of rework on the other guys neck. The choice of which arm to graft the ripper gun onto was pretty simple
For the other fella I had to cut his arm at the elbow and turn it to the right, I also didn't like the way both the Ogryn were looking to the left so I re-mounted the head straight on and added some GS to the neck to fill it out.
Well I think this is far as I will get tonight Hope you like em!
C&C is of course very welcome!
Cheers,
BLACKHAND
Can I just say how much I hate auto appended posts? A lot.
Those two are coming along. I don't like the heads looking the same way either. I feel like GW used to have more varied dynamic poses (in their metal modes).
The head swap looks good, but I feel like the first ones ripper gun could be lower on the arm... more attached to the mid-forearm than the wrist.
The new plasma gun came out great. That crystal looks jammed in and cut to shape.
HOLY SH$T I JUST SAW THAT THIS PLOG HAS HIT 20,000 HITS THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH PEOPLE!!!!!
I tell you now when I began the plog I had no idea dakkites would be so interested in filthy rats!
As soon as two headed rat was mentioned I did consider it for the bonehead but I don't have any more Rat Ogres to convert so the idea will have to go on the back burner...along with female breeders and zombie rat sentinels
@the good green - Its's creepy, after seeing the pic I didn't like the angle the ripper gun was on so I cut it off and lopped a section off the arm. The gun is now attached about 3mm lower on the arm than it was...exactly what you suggested (queue x-files theme)
I hope to get the plasmagun attached to a stormvermin tonight along with a few more lasguns. I have decided to spend a night on the 40skaven and next a night on the Sabre Legion in order to avoid burning out on either.
Thanks again for posting people its great motivation!
No worries 'Nids it was refreshing to take a break and work on something different.
As for a group shot I still don't have enough painted to make it worth it but as soon as I have a few stormvermin painted up I will post one up.
TBH I am a little embarrassed by my progress on the Stormvermin, I planned to have most of them built and painted by now but the Warp Seers, Psykers and Rat Ogryn have been distracting me and so I only have about three of them built and one painted :S
I think the Rat Ogryn would have me distracted too A friend of mine is making his own space-rats, but he is using a Dark Eldar codex - and his modeling skills aren't quite this impressive. I really like the progress so far, and your GreenStuff skills make me a tad jealous!
Keep plugging away!
I really love your work... many years ago I had a Skaven army.. and they have always had a special place in my heart.... When the DKOK are completed I want to start a Skaven army again... the new models are real nice..although I miss some off the old ones :(
I thought that too but the clanrats in IaB have their shields moulded onto them so they will never be able to hold the lasguns in both hands.
One fix is to get the IaB box and carve off the left and right arms and use the ENTIRE IG arms, shoulderpad and all, I have seen it done and it looks good, very 40k.
I didn't go that route due to my fluff but it is the cheapest way I can tink of doing them, of course you still need to buy a box of IG and the IaB box but as far as conversion heavy armies go its not too bad.
Of course if you want carapace vets you have to buy a stormvermin box it comes with heaps of extra bits and allows lots of poses.
Plus you may need two IaB boxes in order to get enough Ogryn if you choose to run them
That enough info ?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Have you thought about using clanrat heads on IG bodies I havn't tried it yet but it might look good? just don't put rat heads on marines it ain't pretty
Thanks. I really want to do a 40k Skaven army but I wasn't sure the best route. I may actually skip trying to get IoB and work with just getting a few and converting a few at a time. Thanks again for the info!
@Tony_nids - I could see it working if beastmen were still in the IG codex but as you can imagine I like the hunched over look as well
@LeBaron - It will cost more but converting Stormvermin and regular clanrats will be easier than the IaB rats and will give you more spare bits to play with. Those IaB rat Ogres are pretty nice though
@bigmeklover - Thanks!
@Red Corsair - I know I am itching to continue work on the vehicles as well but I know if I can hold off for my friends's Hirst molds I will get a more consistent look over the entire army than if I model each one separately , Have patience the pics will come!
@Saintspirit - I don't know what to say...really, I have no idea how to respond
@Bear LaMorte - I guess ?
@Mr.Malevolent - Thanks a lot, If you do start a 40skaven army I would love to see pics and feel free to ask me or the other 40skaven modellers on Dakka any questions you have. Oh and welcome to Dakka!
I have done some work on the Stormvermin today ( between Sabre Legion terminators) but a small mishap with the cable for my digital camera means it will be a little while before I can post pics.
BTW how long do you think it would take for a usb plug that was dropped in a glass of water to dry enough to plug it into a PC...just wondering of course
BLACKHAND wrote:@the good green - Its's creepy, after seeing the pic I didn't like the angle the ripper gun was on so I cut it off and lopped a section off the arm. The gun is now attached about 3mm lower on the arm than it was...exactly what you suggested (queue x-files theme)
BLACKHAND
I can see everything-MUAWhahahAHAHAHHHAHAHhahHAHHAhAHAHhAHAHA...cough
Congrats on the crazy amount of hits. I can see why though, Skaven and 40K... best of both worlds .... if you're not counting orks of course
Thanks Weety, the cable is in the cupboard already but I figure I'll wait a day or so, I really couldn't bear to lose either the PC or the Camera...not only cause the camera is my wife's and she would beat me down if I wrecked it
I know I just had nothing humorous to say in response
Now that I have had time to think though I should have gone with something about how much madonna's front teeth resemble the front teeth of a rodent, Dang!
Well a fairly underwhelming update today I'm afraid, I have been a little busy with my Sabre Legion terminators (sorry!)
I did take time to glue up a few Stormvermin ready for paint.
Unfortunately I have run out of Chaos Black so I will be stuck with converting for the next few weeks, not so bad as I have a lot of it to do!
Well I bit the bullet, I started painting the VerminLord.
I have gone with Denheb stone and shadow grey with a white highlight, trying for a dead flesh look....well the pics say it for themselves.
This is my first try at wetblending in a LONG time, lately I've been pretty lazy with block colours and washes and I have a lot more work to do before I am finished with this guy.
What I'm most happy with is how my incredibly lame lightbox made the model look, for everyone who wants to see the World's Worst Lightbox TM here it is,
Oh and thanks to Vent for the link to the awesome background jpg, I will have to print out a nicer version at work, if you want to try them out the address is here
@Munch munch - Thanks munch, I wasn't sure it would be the right colour but i wanted to tie him to the other Skaven with the red cloth and it came out all right! I can't believe how true the red is in the pic when I used the "lightbox", I am going to have to go back and take some pics of the Warp Seers to show them off a bit better.
@Whalemusic - The hand and Glaive are being painted separately cause its a hell of a lot easier, I also havn't decided on a clear bead or a chunk of Warpstone for the tip of the glaive, I just figured I had a big job ahead of me with the painting so I had better get started.
Albino could work though, give him those little nasty beady red eyes that you see some rodents with. Coming thought the skull mask it could look quite cool.
Thanks Weety, I liked the idea of the white rats becoming the Seers, and thus leaders of the skaven, so I figured the foremost expression of the Seers power would be white as well.
What does everyone think of the black legs? the pics don't show it but the tail fades to black as well and I am thinking of doing the same to both hands, thoughts?
In the illustrations the VerminLord is surrounded by smoke which could either be smoke from heat or steam from cold, I went the way of cold which helped inform the colour choice. I kept the legs and tail black to give the idea of frostbitten limbs and I think it would be effective on the hands as well.
Not sure really BH, its seems a bit more chaosy than Skaven to have animated dead flesh, but then I must admit I'm never read up on the fluff for Skaven, it may fit perfectly well. Personally from what I've seen of my friends pet rodents, they clean themselves constantly, might offer a nice change to have a leader who looks more well kept?
If you do go with frostbite, think about how bad it is, 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree in severity they all illicit different looks on the skin. (Yes I have just googled it and Yes now I can't finish eating my breakfast.)
From what I read in the fluff it seems to me that a Verminlord is basically a summoned daemon and so the dead flesh idea isn't so far fetched, at least how I read it anyway
Part of my leaning to painting the hands black is my love of an artist called RK Post
both he an artist named Brom often "paint" the skin of their subjects in patterns and designs to create contrast, I feel the hands being black would look quite cool against the white and grey of the main body.
And yeah I was thinking of third degree frostbite leading to gangrene for that sweet blackened flesh look
Ok, I see what you mean. In that case yeah go with the blackened limbs, I would be tempted to get a dark green/purple hue to it though as I think a pure black for all but the extreme tips will not give a natural look.
Good idea I think I still have a really dark blue around somewhere which should complement the shadow grey I used with the dheneb stone , thanks for going above and beyond by viewing blackened, pus filled extremities....oh I'm sorry are you still eating?
@Manoknok - Thanks, I still have a lot to work to do on the paintjob but the groundwork is there, unfortunately Macro pics have shown me a ton of flaws to fix up
I will be doing up one of the Rat Ogryn as a bonehead I just haven't considered what to add to represent it.
@Vitruvian - Thanks, and yeah I realize it seems a bit obsessive but it will look great I promise!
@Briancj - I have gone back and forth about runes on the Verminlord, the illustration has them and I have plenty of space on the model for them but I was worried about about taking focus away from the clean lines of the musculature. If I did go with runes I was thinking of black runes on the white skin with raised inflamed skin surrounding it as if it had been burned into it, what do you think?
@The Good Green - I have no more little rat skulls but I have a few bells, I may hang them from the shaft of the Glaive and if I do add runes in the skin they will be on the chest and shoulders.
And yes after procrastinating for so long I finally built a simple and easy lightbox that gets results , I can't believe I waited so long!
BTW it is only three box lids that I cut the insides out of and stuck sheets of A4 paper into , about as easy as it gets.....
...unless of course you have a 3 year old trying to "help" daddy, then it takes like 40 minutes
@munch - Yeah the more I think about them, the more I like the idea. Maybe I will give it a try tonight, maybe
@Saintspirit - I'm not very fond of the old GW Rat Ogres I'm afraid, Their heads look so cartoony!. If anything I will add some more armour plates to one of the two IaB Ogryn I have...or find a decent torso and build an entire Bonehead from scratch!
Why not make the bonehead literally that - a bone-headed rat ogryn, like a mini vermin lord? You've certainly got the gs skills (alternatively, try to thieve a mordheim cyber-rat skull?)
I actually have most of the giant rat skull from the trophy rack that comes with Squeek Headtaker I could have a go at a bonehead with that.... Damn you Graven I was nearly finished with the Rat Ogryn!!
So I did get some work done on the Verminlord's new Runes, but first I had a play with The Lamest Lighbox Ever TM, I just had to see what some of my other models looked like under the new rig
I think I like it.
And here are the Runes, I carved them in the lead with a hobby knife then used GS to form a lip around the edges to make them look deeper, they will get a light sand tomorrow before I add a much larger one to his back. I have been trying to think of something for his back as it was a large bare area but a septic branded Rune is perfect
Runes, priests, flying castles, "warp" weaponry, Vermin Lord - can't be bothered going back through 15 pages - but did anyone consider playing it "counts as" Eldar?
I kinda had a bunch of IG weapon sprues hanging around and hoped to save a bit of cash, I guess I could have a go at writing them up as eldar and try them out for a few games. TBH I have only played IG and Daemonhunters so I am pretty comfortable with them.
Thanks Manoknok, I wish I hadn't had to F up my paintjob on the chest and shoulders to do the Runes but I think the model will be better for it...if I can pull it off
@Manoknok - I am planning on having the runes a deep blue/black to contrast with the off white skin, still considering running a line highlight of red along the edges to make it look burnt/torn. I am going to try to get a look as if a corpse was branded with Runes so no dribbling blood more burnt bloodless flesh... ok now I'm even grossing myself out
I think I'm going to stop checking out your thread in the mornings now BH, or just basically any time I'm eating .
Have you considered doing the runes glowing, your could use a similar palate to the warpstones. Throwing in a touch of OSL it could look quite convincing.
@Lennysmash - Sorry again! I haven't tried my hand at OSL and don't really want to try to learn on such a centrepiece model, maybe once I have a bit of practice on my Warpgun stormvermin I will come back and give it a try.
@Manoknok - I want to say that teats are something you will never see in this army...but I can't promise anything
Fair enough, but if you want to keep leading the field BH we need some NMM and some OSL, and maybe even a few other acronyms that haven't been invented yet .
I kid, fair enough, I wouldn't want to stuff up such a great model either.
@Monkeytroll - I haven't been brave enough to type "Branded Runes" into google yet if thats what you mean I did spend a year as a trainee undertaker when I was younger and have a fair idea of what bloodless wounds on a corpse look like but other than that I am just winging it....Damn sorry Lennysmash I hope you have finished your breakfast!
@Weety, Whalemusic & Lennysmash - I may have to read up on Eldar, I haven't even played against them before so I have no idea how they play, but as you say WM I will keep on as I have been and see how the IG codex goes for now.
No pics tonight I am afraid, I sanded the runes from yesterday and carved a huge Grey Seer rune into his back, tomorrow when the GS is cured I will get to painting and hopefully have something for you to see.
Oh and thanks to InMyGravenImage I have made a start on a new Rat Ogryn, he will be my bone'ead and will literally be boneheaded.
I have a skull hanging around from squeek headtaker which I have made some modifications to and I have made a start to a an armature..yes thats right I will be attempting to build this guy from scratch!
Now I have no idea how it will go, but I ask you to be gentle...its my first time
Its more of an Apocalypse model, in which you can use whatever you please. Could also count as an Eldar Avatar, a BA Furioso Dread, or any number of other things that go on 60mm bases and are around the same size and have plausible weapon load-outs. WOOT APOCALYPSE!
But I guess he could use him in friendly games and use him as a DP. Sorry for sounding like I rejected your answer TiB.
Automatically Appended Next Post: meh, thought It was a quick reply to my other comment, sorry for messing yhis up a bit, don't know if I can remove comments either.

Im sure if you showed them your awesome verminlord theyd have no problems letting you use a DP in the guard army. Just some food for thought (mmm, fajitas.....)
@tony_nids - Thanks man, and yeah DP is my pland for sure
@vitruvian - I usually only play with a sub section of the guys in the club so it should be all good, I am planning on getting a game in this weekend using the Rat Ogryn, Warp Seers and Vermin Lord with my old Gurad and seeing how they go
Lol, I have like 30 unpainted Grey Knights in PA already I don't want any more!
If I was going to add grey knights for amoured infantry I would wait till I know if Inquisition troops are going to be allies after the new codex is out, I can only have so many models in an army that aren't legal
Got a decent amount of work done tonight, first up are the Runes on the Verminlord
The chest is a real pain to sand so its not too clean around the chest runes, but my natural laziness kicked in and I just painted over them
pretty happy with the right shoulder....
....not so happy with the left shoulder the Rune ended up a bit too far forward but again, lazy
The back came up pretty well for a more complicated pattern, now I only have to find brush small enough to paint a thin line of red along the edges of the Runes to simulate the burnt flesh. You may have noticed I slapped a coat of midnight blue on the black areas to tie it to the shadow gray on the skin, what do you think?
The next few pics are of the beginnings of my Bone'ead scratchbuild, just the legs and waist so far,.
Pretty rough so far but as you can see I have built the legs with a much longer thigh than the IaB Rat Ogres, but they seem to be modeled along the lines of a gorilla with tiny legs and huge arms. I am going for a more balanced body shape and by lengthening the thigh I was able to get a lot more movement for the pose...at least thats my story and I'm sticking to it!
How about adding a glow of green to the runes on the Vermin Lord? Warpstone power could be pulsing under his skin also is his limbs going to be blue/black like that? I think I have missed on how you plan to paint him
Vermin Lord looks really great Blackhand! That pale coloring is going to really jarring next to the rest of your skaven (which is a good thing). The leg sculpts are coming along nicely too! Wow. Good work.
The addition of the runes really helps to 'break up' the model, and add some more focal points. I like that you haven't gone too overboard adorning him (trinkets, etc); he is 'simple' and effective.
I know that you haven't finished the paint job, but I was thinking that maybe the runes could use some more colour, just to draw more attention to them. I like the idea of them looking red and sore, as if they have recently been carved in, but are not entirely healed, or can't heal. Nothing too overboard, as the light skin does need a dark contrast, but just to give them the look of scarring or such.
Hmm. I actually think Eldar may be the way to go with this project.
1) HQ - Psykers. You can take individual Far(grey)seers and warlock (engineers)!!!
2) Vermin lord counts as wraithlord (or an avatar)
3) Eldar guardians essentially = high initiative guardsman. Skaven essentially = high initiative humans.
4) Eldar tanks actualy float. Those floaty tanks can easilly be 'counts as' skimmers.
5) Wraithguard = Rat ogres. Ok, WG are on 25mm bases but the stats seem good enough, and they are led by a warlock (or a packmaster...)
6) Yriels Eye of Wrath (one use only, big template centred on him S:6 AP:3 used in combat instead of attacking) seems like it could easily be some volotile warpstone weapon.
7) Weapon platform. Easy way to get the skaven weapon teams into the army.
8) Swooping hawks... Tunneling team! The hawks can skyleap and re-deep strike. Could symbolise the team digging back underground and re-emerging elsewhere.
9) Dire avengers... just souped up guardians. Stormvermin with a gun.
10) Dark reapers... Jezzails
11) Fire dragons, Warp spiders, Shining spears, i can't seem to fit in
12) Banshees... Plauge censor bearers. Essentially always strike first in the first round of combat (due to noxious fumes choking the opponent) and Warcry can lower enemy WS (also due to noxious fumes choking the opponent) Another option in the scorpions, The only S: 3(4) Eldar unit (due to the flails)
13) Harlequins... Clan Eshin adepts. Fleet, ignore difficult terrain, a rather poor (5+) invun save, high initiative and hit and run all seen to fit in. The harlequins kiss could easily be fighting claws.
Theres proberly more. But i just woke up
Though I'm pretty much on IG for now, I must admit that Dave's thorough analysis DOES make a lot of sense...
I'm especially convinced by the Grey Seer / Farseer, Warlock / Engineer, Harlequins / Eshin, Swooping Hawk / Tunneling Teams and skimmer comparisons...
Plus Skaven do share the high speed with the Eldar, as mentioned in Guardians / Clanrats!!!
The units do seem to fit well enough but the eldar don't portray the cowardice and mob nature of the Skaven which is why IG and Orks still suite the best Black's going down the IG path and I'm converting mine with Orks in mind.
Skaven Vs IG ..................................................................................................
Clan rats = guardsmen
Storm Vermin = Karskin/Stormtroopers
Gutter Runners = Elesian Drop Troop (or how ever you speell eet)
Rat Ogres = Orgryns
Plague rats = Salvar Kem Dogs
Doomwheels = Sentinal with Rough rider mods and Las/Multi Las
Grey seers = Sanctioned Psykers/Inquisition
Jezails = Special Weapon Teams
Globeaders = Special Weapon Teams
Floaty things = Tanks
Vermin Lord = Knight Titan (for Apoc or fun)
It fits pretty good and sits better on the mob level IG are cheap after all
Skaven Vs Orks
........................................................................................................
Clan rats = Boys
Storm Vermin = Ard Boys
Gutter Runners = Commandos
Rat Ogres = Nobs
Plague rats = Burna Boys
Doomwheels = DefKopta (This is what I've done looks great and matches well)
Grey seers = Weird Boy
Jezails = Lootas
Globeaders = Tank Bustas
Floaty things = Wagons/Truks/Tracks
Vermin Lord = Def Dred
You get a good match but you also get that heavy mob mentality and the units fit as well (possibly not as much as IG mind you)
Keep it coming Blackhand can't wait to see the pics of them all lined up ready to "kill kill manlings"!
@Rose_mountains - I am going to stick with red for the Runes, am trying to stick with the theory of using two main colours and and one opposite secondary colour, so Blue-white, Blue-black and red as a secondary. I think adding a glowing green may distract a little.
@Gitsplitta - Thanks bro, the sculpt is going to be a big project I'm not sure if I should have started it!
@bishop - Thanks bishop, my plan is to paint in a red in some way, either a red edge on the wounds or as you say I can try a red ink, not sure if I have one but I could mix up a wash somehow. Will give it a go tonight.
@Dayve110 - Wow, thanks for doing the research I promise to look at the Eldar Codex and have a think about it, maybe even builiding the models in a way that will allow them to be played with both codexs will be the way to go. My fear is that I am not the best player in the world and already have a lot of losses with my guard, I would probably have even less luck with Eldar!
@Waaghlord - I am open to eldar just wary
@Yggdrasil - Thanks, creepy is what I was going for!
@Santobell - That was my original thought with the IG, horde army just suits the skaven, I think the beuty of a full conversion army is that you can choose any codex you want...just maybe not change the codex half way through modelling it
@Yggsdrasil - LOL
@tortured Robot - The smaller model count is appealing but a mech/vet IG army is relatively low on models anyway, hence me going down that path
Thanks for all the ideas and comments guys, I appreciate it
Just subscribed. Im in awe of your skill with gs. I look forward to seeing how this army ends up, your work is inspiring. Very curious to see some castles
BLACKHAND wrote:Lol, I have like 30 unpainted Grey Knights in PA already I don't want any more!
If I was going to add grey knights for amoured infantry I would wait till I know if Inquisition troops are going to be allies after the new codex is out, I can only have so many models in an army that aren't legal
BLACKHAND wrote:@Dayve110 - Wow, thanks for doing the research I promise to look at the Eldar Codex and have a think about it, maybe even builiding the models in a way that will allow them to be played with both codexs will be the way to go. No problem, it was all off the top of my head anyways (i have Eldar and used to have skaven so...)
While not being much help on modelling techniques, more so simply ideas, i can happily supply workable army lists and tactics if you want help with the gaming aspect. Learn to use Eldar correctly and they are a pretty hardcore army, but i tend to stay away from what the interwebs refer to as 'good' Eldar lists (wave serpent spam makes me sad)
Spam of any kind is kinda sad in any army,(says the guy with 3 LRs in hist skaven list ) I will keep you in mind if I decide to try Eldar, at the moment I am knee deep in Rat Ogryn and favours to other Dakkites so army lists are getting shoved to the back of my mind
Ah knee deep in Ogres just like another Shrek movie... pft on with the rat building we are on a deadline to take over the world pinky.
I need you to make me a Vermin lord god damn he's nifty though I think his pointed stick needs some loving maybe - piping with orbs and spiky bits
the Skaven diet of weapon additions.
This is looking great mate, and dead chuffed you liked my bonehead idea; the armature looks very tasty indeed. Though deep in my heart I am treadhead, I think Glass Ninjas TM are a good way to go with this. Still, it's all exciting stuff; I'll be honest, I wasn't sold on the black hands but really like the look of them now, though still think a bit more definition around the knuckles might help. Also, I think rough edges around the runes are fine: scarifcation, and all that.
@Santobell - Thanks man, I am still on the look out for an orb to attach to the end of the Glaive and I am going to hang some bells and bones where the blade meets to shaft to Skaven it up a it.
@inmygravenimage - Thanks fro the idea! I got a decent amount of work done last night, unfortunately its at a stage that it looks like its been through a thresher so I didn't bother with pics. As for tanks the Ogryn squad, stormvermin squads and psyker squad will all be in chimeras and I hope to guild three LRs so its still a mech list...I just havn't built any mech yet
@Anung un Rama - I'm prety happy with the VerminLord so far as well, but I reserve judgment on the Bonehead till he's done, there is a LOT more work to do
and no worries about the link, I really like your daemons.
With as many really intence projects in the works as you have... when do you have time to do anything else besides work on this stuff. Your concepts are awsome. i have long wanted to do some 40K Hrud/Skaven. this is great inspiration.
Not really, I just try to get an hour to hour and a half every night to get some progress, happily my partner watches her soaps and haunts facebook quite happily while I paint and model.
I'm glad you are inspired by the 40skaven, it seems to have fired up a few people there are two other dakkites who are working on similar armies right now, I'm starting to think GW missed the boat on this one and should revisit Rats in space
Sorry people I have been a bit busy tonight with a project for a fellow Dakkite but I did add a bit more GS to the Bone'ead armature. Am a bit stuck now as my painting station is in the spare room , my sister-in-law is staying over and apparently my epoxy resin "stinks" and I'm not allowed to use it. I have been using fast setting epoxy resin as a base for the GS, mainly to save on Gs but also because it sets rock hard provides a stable core.
On to the pics! what there is of them
I have a lot more carving to do on the front teeth obviously, Aww hell I've got a whole ton of work to do but its pretty fun to slowly build up the muscle and bone and decide how the pose will turn out.
@Lennysmash - I am leaving the top of the head free of skin and then the neck and sections of the spine , I had thoughts of having patches of skin missing along with stitches holding on grafted patches of skin, sound lke a plan?
@Hyenaejoe- Thanks, I wanted to keep the disproportionate arms of the new Rat Ogres but needed more length in the tighs to get the pose I wanted, I hope I am getting the "litheness" coming across that I wanted.
@Gathering Storm - I wanted a more dynamic pose than the other Rat Ogryn, I figure a Bone'ead leads from the front
Is the bone ead gonna get a bit beefier or will he stay all wiry and lithe. My personal preferance would be to try and get him to merge better with the ogryns you already have, (which look tremendous btw), by basically pumping his chest out a bit. I do like that his head literally is a bone though
Nice work so far on the bone 'ead Definitely looks like you captured the litheness there, and like the sound of the stitches/missing skin. What did you use for the spine?
His shoulders and chest will be wide and heavily muscled, he will have quite disproportionately large upper torso to contrast with the narrow waist. I'm not sure what the muscles under the arm and running down the side of the ribs are called but once I ad them the whole torso will have more of a triangular shape.
I definitely want his arms and shoulders to be as big or bigger than the normal Rat Ogryns, he is their boss after all!
@Monkeytroll - The spine is from a glow-in-the-dark sabretooth skeleton, who knew? I ended up slicing it into sections and running wire up through the middle so I could get the twist I was looking for.
@Whalemusic - I have considered it but I don't a have rig that is capable of casting him. one day if I do enough original sculpts that are decent I may consider buying a vacuum pump and bell jar and offset the cost of the rig with some resin sales but until then he is gong to stay unique and original
Not sure if you could find someone local, but you could consider finding a caster that already has the needed equipment. I have someone stateside that does white metal casting (pewter). Also not sure on prices. Other option might be to do some commission work for someone like paulson games or chapterhouse. Just sayin your work is getting better and better, and you've been helping a lot of people out with custom stuff, inspiration, and pointers, I'd like to see you benefit from it.
Thanks a lot WM, I really do just like helping out the guys who have given me so much encouragement in the time I have been on Dakka, with out that I wouldn't be at the stage I am now in my sculpting.
I will definitely have a look around for casters in NZ and perhaps contact Chapterhouse, its worth a few emails at the least
When I used to do belts in Seattle, I had an arrangement with one of the local casting operations. Most of what they did was jewelry, but they would cast all kinds of things... it was all the same to them. They'd cast my buckles and mounts just as readily as a pair of earrings... and they could do it in bulk too. Most of the expense of casting is in the labor, not the metal. This is true for metals through silver (for my work, I charged extra for silver pieces or no one would believe they were real, but they didn't cost any more to make than brass did).
So I think the odds of getting a local jewelry caster to do the work for you is pretty good.
I know a couple of jewellers I will make inquiries, thanks Gits.
It would probably mean the end of my engagement but I would like to have my own vacuum chamber
And just to reassure you guys, I am still sculpting the Bone'ead, I have bulked up the torso considerably and blocked in most of the right shoulder.
Unfortunately my peaceful night modelling has been interrupted!
Just as I was going to take some pics of my progress I was evicted from our spare room ( I like to think of it as MY modelling room) when my sister in-law was carried in by her boyfriend. Apparently 19 year old girls can't handle their alcohol like they could in my day and she was totally wasted.
Rather than try and sculpt to the sounds of her vomiting into a bucket I have beaten a hasty retreat upstairs...thank god for Dakka or I might not have been able to get my requisite modelling fix

Lol, I felt old as I did it but I had to laugh...man did I laugh.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Managed to actually get a game with my IG today!
Was totally destroyed.....
...so I came home and licked my wounds while getting some work done on the Bone'ead!
I am thinking of shortening his neck by one section of spine but otherwise am happy with how he is trucking along, now all that is needed is the perfect close combat weapon, and I have some ideas for that as well
Hey Blackhand looking great. I think shortening the neck a tad might work well....
Excellent stand in for a ripper gun. Btw.
I am not sure if it is the angle but the shin of the leg that is on the gun side seems disporportionaly short. It might just be a lack of 3D or something - but you can see what i mean in your penultimate pick.
I find the sentinel chainsword is pretty handy for ogyns converts. I say that like I have a lot of experience with it. I have done it once and not to well...but then i don't have your skills. It makes it look bionic.
Anyway, despite the lack of teats and mutant ears looking great.
Oh. Have you heard of the Grim Squeaker: scroll down and you can see the miniature...
Once the GS dries I will revisit the length of the neck, if I cut it right I can always reattach it if the look isn't right.
As for the leg it may be a slight bit shorter but but only a few mm, it doesn't help that the poses of both legs are so different and are therefore hard to compare. I will have to take a comparison shot next to a IoB Rat Ogryn and a classic Rat Ogryn to show the differences in the morphology.
I may have gone a little overboard as he is only about 8-9mm shorter than the VerminLord and his chest and shoulders are as wide
I will be going for a saw of some kind just haven't tied down which one I will use yet.
And yeah I have read about the Grim Squeaker in the Pratchett novels but have never seen the model, very cool !
Oh and the ripper gun is the drum magazine from a grenade launcher and the exhaust from a sentinel, underslung blade is a stormvermin halberd blade. Not the cheapest way to build a rippergun but I had some spare broken sentinels hanging around that I wanted the legs of, so yeah...
Looks great so far, but I'm not sure about the pose of the gun arm. This is obviously still wip, but I think it would work better if he hold it up and aim with a straight arm. He's the smart one after all.
He is the smart one! smart for an Ogryn with no face
I was going for a "scrambling over a lump of broken statue in order to get close enough to the enemy to tear it to pieces" pose, but happily the arm is mostly wire at the moment so I will experiment a bit with straightening the arm and see how it looks.
If there was one wish I was granted my a genie right now, though, it would be to make the lover legs of the Vermin Lord bigger, or the hooves. The hooves are tiny man
Love your work, that Bone 'Ead is some of the finest sculpting I have seen on a blog. Awesome, literally.
Coming along very nicely indeed there Blackhand I wasn't sure about the length of the neck in the first pics you showed us but now theres a bit more anatomy in place I think the long necked sleek look adds to the litheness you were after. Personally I like the bent gun arm, feels a bit more natural to me when the gun is part of the arm. Well, you know as natural as a cybernetic gun limb on an undead giant bipedal rat gets
@Bossasaurus - Cool I have'nt seen 9 yet, I think for the Bone'ead I keep with the cyberzombie theme but I like the ramshackle robot robot imagery of the "beast" I t may be something I have a look at later, thanks!
@Odro Dakka - Thanks a lot, I'm really happy with the sculpting but I have a while to go before I am up to the work of say, FreakForge as for the Vermin Lord's hooves...you are the first person to mention it and I thought it would be sooner I still need to sculpt a decorative base you see and I am not sure how deep that will go and how much of the hooves I will lose in the process. Once I have done the base IO will revisit the hooves and add detail and a bit of bulk, not too much, but something.
@Gitsplitta - Thanks Bro! I live to give you guys nightmares
@Monkeytroll - Thanks, as I said I may still shorten the neck and see how it looks and I am on the fence about the gun arm I have yet to see how it looks straightened out.
I was looking at the beast as a basis for my Vermin lord big mechanical rat, but I have since dropped him from my list so yeah 9 was a good film though I though it ended poorly.
Hey Black has there been any progress on your floating tanks/ruins yet?
I am rapidly approaching the time when I can no longer wait for my friend's Hirst Arts moulds. Without them I will have to retun to my plan of carving styrofoam and facing it with layer of plaster but I really need to get on with the vehicles!
I haven't been totally ignoring them, as I have been casting other bits I have poured the odd hatch and now have enough for the 3 chimera, I have a mould ready to go for my steampunk-styled weapon sponsons, a battle cannon and vanquisher cannon ready to mount on turrets and can build a Punisher gatling cannon in a night so some lascannons I traded for arrive from the UK I will have all the bits I need to assemble the Leman Russes.
In effect I have everything I need and will just have to start experimenting with sculpting a "courtyard" of flagtones as a base for my plastic ruins to be attached to then building the broken stone to hang beneath the vehicle.
I realize a lot of people who watch the thread are very keen to see the vehicles and I won't keep them waiting too much longer!
My friend emailed me this afternoon to let me know the hirst molds arrived!! I pick them up tomorrow, so casting away!! thanks again for the offer to help with the molds Whalemusic but this time I am good ( I reserve the right to call on that favour in the future )
In the meantime I have a few size comparison shots of the Verminlord, Bone'ead and a Rat Ogryn.
Here a couple of the shots of the new left arm.
I took a section of the neck off and I am a lot happier with the angle of the head, not pointing down so much, and I plan on sanding down the neck vertebrae a bit so they don't poke out so much. Now the pics make the waist and lower torso look incredibly thin but I have added decent oblique muscles the hunched over pose doesn't help at all...long story short I am going to add some bulk to the lower torso to make him less like a greyhound on steroids
The right arm is going on hold for a week or so till my close combat weapon arrives but that will give me plenty of time to work on the vehicles (and Gisplitta's Mantis Helms!)
Great progress BH, Personally I kinda liked the long neck but its still looks great. Thank you for the Greyhound image I was trying to think why the form looked familiar .
Gitsplitta wrote:Man those are beautiful Blackhand. Wow! I suspect this blog will inspire many skaven 40k armies... just hope everyone's as good a sculptor as you are!
It already has, and on top of that Blackhand has been a brilliant assist/helper when it came to ideas on casting and other tips/tuts. There's no way my Skaven 40k horde would never have been more than a snazzy flyer and pipe dreams otherwise.
That Bonehead is coming along really well now, it looks much better with the shortened neck, scale is good he's about the size of my Mega rats which really gives him that cut from a stonger jib look and the gun merged into his arm connects him to the unit as a point of reference/similarity. Question though will it be hairy and skin on or as it's a bone head and seems to be well dead will you be doing flesh off and muscles ridging/bands with chunks of clinging flesh etc?
As for the VerminLord he will eventually be given a wider base with broken masonry and the like on it, I want to make sure I have gotten every last piece of sculpting and modelling done on him before I start the decorative base, plus once I get the castle molds I will be able to create much better broken srone.
@santobell - I am planning on have patches of skin missing and stitches holding skin togther, Im not a big fan of my fur sculpting skills. I think you would agree it's not the easiest to sculpt!
Sweet The angle of the head does look better now, and losing that extra vertebrae hasn't lost the sleek look Arm looks great, but yeah, he does look a little greyhoundish, just don't bulk him up too much. Keep the good work flowing.
They look great together, Perhaps the Vlord could be smashing his foot through a bit of masonry (might be a bit tricky now that he is all finished). Oh and I love the greyhound look of the bone head, it makes him stand out from the other rats.
I was a little skeptical about how skinny the bonehead was looking, but lined up with the others I reckon you've really pulled it off! He looks lithe and fast - the kind of bad guy who would be up in your face by the time you've raised a rifle
The big one looks surprisingly unsettling too - I think it's the big empty eye sockets or something, but it really is creepy to look at. Which is the plan, right? Good job!

@monkeytroll - I will try to keep to the original "lithe and fast" plan but I'm just not quite happy yet..promise not to screw him up!
@commander Cain - I am thinking of smoking rifts all through the base around him, kinda like he has just stepped fromt he abyss or is cracking the ground he is walking on...just an idea at this point.
@Scarper - Creepy is indeed the look I was going for, I feel the normal VerminLord model is far too cartooney..hell the whole old skaven range was not utilizing the creepy mythology the Skaven have. I happened to use my devoutly christian fiance as a guage of whether I was getting the Verminlord right.. The more she told me to stop making a model of the devil ,the closer I was getting to the look I wanted
@santobell - thanks man I will watch the vid when I get home , the damn work computer won't show it :(
@Sennacherib - If you have any questions feel free to PM but as I have told others, practice ids the only way to go.. glad you enjoy my stuff though!

BLACKHAND
Crazy work computers and their content blocking ways... don't they know information is meant to be free especially at work when you don't have to pay for the net connection geez.
I know, why does work have to hog their bandwidth for "emails" and "business" how selfish!
Ok so I would post up some pics and updates, buuuuuut.....
...I'm too busy casting!
of course I am not sure I had the right ratios...and I made waay too much plaster ....but I'm giving it a go and I hope to have some ruins for you tomorrow night
Whoah this is awesome!!! How did you achieve the slabs? I guess you have a mould, but I don't remember reading something close to this...
Also, you could have a quick look at previews of the future video game "Bioshock: Infinite", the setting is on flying cities in a somewhat steampunk era... Not as dirty as the usual Skaven background, but I'm pretty sure you could find a few nice ideas...
Yep the the floor pieces are from the Hirst Arts mold #203
I don't need to take a mold of them at this point my friend has offered to lend the molds to me whenever I need them.... he apparently has seen the Tervigon I built and is happy to have me owe him a favour.....worrying, but I am enjoying the molds too much to care right now

Automatically Appended Next Post: Hey people! Got some new ruined castle pics for you…that’s pretty much it.
My first two bases, I have done them in the same ash waste scheme as my IG so I can pretend the two armies are fighting each other “Pew Pew..your dead,” “ Arrghh” you know how it goes.
Couple of shots of the plaster work, will need more of course as well as plenty of sanding and carving….a lot more work than I ever anticipated but I’ve started now
A shot of the plastic ruins with the plaster ruins
A close up of an exposed sewer pipe and part of the sewer brick work, I will try and incorporate little scenic bits like this in every vehicle..if my head doesn’t explode first.
Thanks everyone, means a lot that you feel the actual vehicle is matching up to your expectations! It sure does make me spend the extra time on it when I know you guys will be checking it over
@Wolfshadow - The weapon turrets are currently undergoing a redesign. I was planning on a hemispherical dome of brass with the mulitlaser or battle cannon poking out but after spending some time with the rats now I think it looks too "victorian" as opposed to "skaveny" so now I am planning a cockpit type turret which will house a gunner, complete with mask, and the weapon will be on a chunky pintle mount. I realize that an open topped turret may not be WYSIWYG but I think Skaven wouldn't be bothered by bullets whizzing past their heads TBH and it will help reinforce the look of the vehicle, I hope!

How about using the crew of some Doomwheels? They're already seated & operating some kind of device-device...
@Gitsplitta @ Graven image - I wanted the guns to look bolted on as opposed to part of the ruins....the floating gun platforms..now your just screwing with my mind
@Yggdrisil - I have a doomwheel on it's way to me and will be using as much as I can from it to create a turret cockpit that is castable, I will need like six of these things so casting is the only realistic way to go.
I like the incorporation of the sewer into the floating fortress. I like the sort of homage to the WHFB roots of the Skaven. You may just inspire GW to hop to it... then again... we still have no Squats...
Gitsplitta wrote:Or "floating" turrets off to the sides or above the castle?
I like this idea. but maybe think of the doombell skaven weapons, where they have some crazy mechanical thing that somehow is a gun, haha, you could have a bunch of tanks of warpstone energy being pumped into some sort of long barrel being held up by skaven slaves.....
Your public clamors for satisfaction Blackhand... floating turrets are what they require. You, as the humble artistic sock-puppet... must satisfy them.
Damn you all...I will begin designing the floating turrets tonight...was ghoing to have a quite night..grumble grumble...
@LeBaron - Yeah My though is that the skaven ride around INSIDE the ruins not on them, so they would have converted the old buildings cellars and sewers into crew compartments..thats the idea any way.
@Sageheart - I would like to go to town on the weapons and jsut build whatever comes to mind but I want to enter a tournemtn with these guys next year and still want to keep at least the weapons WYSIWYG,...can still have tanks of warpstone pumping poisonous gas all over the place just for fun though
A Battle cannon on an 18th cent naval type mount would be cool.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Or if you wanted them to have cover, but not be fully 'turreted' you could use barbettes like what was on ships in the late the late 1800s-early 1900s.
