@lostcarcosa: Thank you friend! *Wheezes* I mix all blood just before hand in a beer bottle cap (preferably a freshly opened one that still has a drop worth of beer residue) then i add my paint, water and inks. It's not a precise recipe for blood but I go between a very brown dried blood and a fresher bleeder. For older dried blood I add in more brown and ochre ink to the mix and conversely I add in more red and salmon inks for fresh blood. If you can point out a mini you were specifically looking at I can try to give you an aproximate recipe. Hobby supply stores should have various dropper bottles of inks, which gives it that wet look.

Cool stuff, some really cool shot. I really like all the cultists, especially the leader type dude.

Greetings one and all! Gods be praised its a great time for Chaos! *takes deep breath then launches into horrific coughing fit* Pardon us. We are ill. Though we have been pouring over the new tome of Legions and are reconfiguring our forces. I am happy to report that all affected Chaos warbands are looking very good. Very strong indeed! *Insane laughter*
With the books in hand I'm making lists! Shall I post what I come up with?

Post by: genom.cor
Dakka dakka dakka! Hey everybody! Small posting hiatus but I've got work to show for it.
First up is the beginnings of a Warpsmith for the Black Legion
Next we have the Son's of the Cyclops, featuring converted 30k/ 40k Ahriman's! Here is the conversion laid out as planned, I'm excited to finally do the build, I've been planning it for a while.
The theme for my Thousand son's is red marble fyi. Not sure I'm totally feeling it but I may try some final washes to see if I can set a satisfying finish to them. Any thoughts on this would be really appreciated
Still need to get my hands on a bunch of 32mm bases and go to work redoing all these chaos bases ... daunting task but I'll get to it. Stay tuned for more work at as I finish stuff up! Thanks for looking and as always any C&C or general chit chat is more than welcome. Have a good one!

Pretty cool. The armour seems a bit too splotchy to me. I think some solid edge highlighting may help and potentially for more definition on the 'seams' that run through marble. Saying that I think the shoulderpads look really cool, the effect just didn't quite translate over the rest of the armour.
Keep at it though, there's certainly a lot of promise for the concept.

Interesting models, the warpsmith and Ahrimans will be interesting to follow.
Regarding the red marble, this is a ballsy move and great Idea, and as EDC said, with a lot of potential. But as EDC also said, I am not convinced with all the areas where you applied this texture.
On one hand, this shoulder is brilliant (damn, again, paraphrasing EDC ^^ ) :
On another hand, I am less fond of that leg :
I think I would like it better with well defined metal trims, and maybe a whiter leg upper half.
Another though, how about focusing on some specific armor parts (shoulders, elbow, gun top, lower leg) and leave the rest in plain white (or red). This might improve readability.
Out of curiosity, what are the steps you used for this effect ?
Keep it up, I am sure the final result will be brilliant.

Post by: lindsay40k
Red marble is definitely a bold choice. I'd be inclined to google image search it, and do five or ten test minis based on different results. I'd love to see some of the deeper and richer varieties - I'm going to blog how I paint my bright red Word Bearers in the coming weeks, myself.
BTW every time your blog comes up on my subscriptions I hum Cher's 'Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves'

Post by: genom.cor
Thanks for all the help guys! I appreciate the feedback!
@EDC: Yeah I'm feeling the same way, this effect is extremely time consuming as I basically have to let every layer dry before I can see how it looks at all. Your definitely right about the seems and color crack lines. I'm planning on coming back through for thin edging cracks in white when I get the red's where I want them so I was worried too much white on the shoulder pads but I'm sure I can make it look like veins extend from the whites.
@kernelTerror: So this style is completely new and experimental but I'm basically going for almost watercolor type mixing. So with the different red's I'll heavily water with at most a 1:1, usually 1:2 or 3. I lay down a very heavy stroke leading the water to pool on the model where I want it and then leave it to dry. You and EDC both seem to dig the shoulder pad which is good because that is the parts on the model where I experimented with red ink in a second layer and another layer of white but I was uncertain if I should continue this process all over. So now I think I'll continue adding in more white as veins and definitely do a layer of red ink over the reds. The leg you pointed out is an example of a first layer of red that will benefit from the ink. Which I'm thinking very seriously about also applying to the metals in the manner of the TS whose shoulder pad you like. What do you think of the redish metal on that one?
@lindsay40k::haha as a kid I used to think it was "Gypsy Trampoline" and I still sing it to myself. .. alot. The red of your Word Bearers are rocking! Looking forward to that

Post by: genom.cor
And more Ahriman. Final pose here, trying to make it have the feel that he's firing off a spell from his staff mid sprint or that he is the middle of a duel and about to pull off an epic kung-fu staff attack lol. What you think?
Thanks for looking! Happy hobbying!

Post by: evildrcheese
I like it, he's got a serious lean going on! I think an outstretched arm with an open hand would be better than a bolt pistol for his left arm. Otherwise looking good.
EDC
95538
Post by: KernelTerror
Funny how the camera angle can give different feeling. The first picture definitely gives a very dynamic pose, probably dodging backwards given the flow of the cloth. The second picture on another hand shows quite a lean indeed (and I swear I am not only posting here to agree with EDC.), that might be inconsistent with the position of his left leg.
You're probably onto something though, and very cool backpack.
35246
Post by: genom.cor
@EDC: Cool thanks! The thing is, the concept of this conversion was an Ahriman 30k/40k body swap using recognizable parts from the original metal model, also I had to put some effort to get it.
@kernelTerror: Yeah it does change a bit huh irl it looks like he's either jumping a bit or in full knees up run. I could try to pivot a leg though idk if it's worth the effort.

Post by: genom.cor
Here's the Exalted sorcerer on the other side of the Ahriman body swap. Trying to make it look like he's casting a summoning spell. What you think?

Sweet, I can definitely see him raising demons trough a demonic portal in front of him, excellent.
Here is a thought, how about making two or three demons with only their torsos/arms/heads coming out of the base (like undeads rising from a grave if you will, xcept they're demons and there is no grave).
If you have the bits to spare, putting them in front of that sorceror could look pretty cool.
35246
Post by: genom.cor
@corpuschain: Thanks very much!
@kernelTerror:: Cool ideas! I was going to keep these bases but have since decided not too, so when I get to new bases I'll try to make a warp portal base
Here is Exalted Sorcerer number 2! He's casting a ... cotton candy spell? Idk what kind of spell it looks like come to think of it, tbh I just really had fun making it. ... what kind of spell do you think it is?

Post by: KernelTerror
Nice ! I'd say it is definitely a toxic fume spell, get targeted and it will rot your brain !
And I see you are getting the hang of that red marble texture, well done !
35246
Post by: genom.cor
Thanks KernelTerror, I've been laying down the basecoats of the marble first on everything then I'll come back to darken the red's and add in the cracks but I want to do it all at the same time so they have a consistent look. I've done another 20 bolter TS. I'll post pictures asap.

Hmm, I think the summoner could benefit from work on his posture. He seems to be looking at the ground; I can't see the vintage Ahriman figure supporting many directions of facing other than forwards, so perhaps he might benefit from doing so - and his casting hand being repositioned so as to appear to be projecting incantations in the direction he's looking?
There's a Forge World traitor librarian summoning a Daemon whom I'm planning to riff on with a spare Daemon torso being projected from a casting hand, it's a handy way to add motion to a model with a fairly static pose.
52201
Post by: evildrcheese
Exalted Sorcerers look awesome. I really like the dude with his arm out like he's summoning something.
Now it's my turn to agree with KernelTerror, the second sorcerer looks like a cool toxic fume.
EDC
35246
Post by: genom.cor
@lindsay40k: I appreciate that. But do me a favor and imagine that the summoner is closing his eye's and bowing his head while muttering the spell. He's wearing a helmet so we can't see it, but I actually based his head on the position of my head when I took the same body posture of the old Ahriman and held my hand up then imagined myself summoning Daemons. It takes some effort to cast summoning btw, i've only managed to spawn 2 daemons personally. But also, the theme of this army is that they are 30k Thousand son's just after Prospero but before Ahriman cast the Rubric. Change rips through the legion as their primarch and his closest sorcerers all ascend to daemonhood, all except for Ahriman and his Coven, who must keep their horror from drawing down the wrath of Magnus while at the same time seeking for some way to master their new found powers rather than become hosts for daemons like their mutated albeit powerful brothers in arms. So half the army will be Ahriman and company while the other half are "the changed" and of course I have to do Big Red himself. All this is to say that casting the more exotic spells are quite difficult still for these relatively novice sorcerers amd take a great deal of concentration lol.
@EDC: Cheers buddy! So among the responses to what spell that is I got, toxic fume, soul burn and a blessing spell. So I guess it can count for any spell lol
Speaking of Big Red, i got the Primarch yesterday
So much to consider as far as build options and paint scheme. I know I'm going to have a fireball rising out of his right hand, and I'm leaning towards the Cyclops face. Im not super into the horney titties either but they are kind of iconic.... argh. Also thinking about pale cream/grey skin and red hair, magnus the ginger? The only thing im fairly sure about is matching the armor to the rest of the thousand son's obviously... or should.Magnus be special? AARRRGGHH! THE VOICES OF THE WARP ARE MADDENING? Do you have any good painting or modeling ideas for Magnus?

And so with only one cut to an index finger and somehow some super glue on my stomach along with all fingers... I officially have a balanced standing warhound with a fairly non-static pose. Lmk what you think?
I'm thinking about bringing down the completed titan along with my table to the local stores as kind of a simultaneous meet and greet/ take all comers challenge (though I worry that it'll "die by turn 3 every game" as my buddy with a Revenant attests). It'll be fun for me in anycase. Would you take up the challenge? Do you think I'll win any games at all or just get my titan blown up in many glorious ways?

Pose looks perfect ! On its way to stomp some imperial guards !
I would definitely take up the challenge , probably with something silly made of demons and renegade knights (Not that my models will ever cross the atlantic...but well...) ! How many points would this beast cost ?

Clocks in at 75 power and 2k points even KernelTerror. I'm really hoping to take on a house of knights most of all!

No matter how good an idea it seems, never glue models to your stomach.....
Looks good (I mean, not enough tentacles, but that's just me ), what's the weaponry you have for it?
35246
Post by: genom.cor
Thanks monkeytroll lol, yeah this is going to be more Black Legion than Deathguard. I've got 2 turbolasers, a plasma blaster and a bolter but I think I may need to get an inferno gun too and give myself all the options. They do it on purpose, that all the weapon options would arm a 2nd titan... dont they.
With the superstructure almost finished (save a few magnets) it looks like it's time to undercoat and put all the pistons on. *cracks knuckles* That was easier than I thought!

Post by: genom.cor
I got the warhound primed but there isn't much to see on that, so I'll save an update on the Titan for after I get some paint down. However, with the Titan off my build table I've got the Death Guard coming up next starting with Daddy here.
I wanted to do a pose other than the prescribed two, so I went with both arms back and a little more of a forward lean to give the look of him prowling after having just fired the lantern.
Lots more death guard on the way as I rebase and generally bring the army into compliance with the Codex and the 8th edition scale changes without having to buy too much new stuff besides what I already have. C&C is very welcome. Thanks for looking.

KT: Haha yeah.. basically I haven't had a chance to do any Hobbying for the past year between the baby and relocating to a new city. So these models have sat in stasis and needless to say, I've been really looking forward to these! Now I'm like a madman with whatever time I can get.
Monkeytroll: Thank you sir! I'm glad you approve!
Today I've got the leadership for The Tainted. Not much conversion on Necrosius, but I wanted him to match the rest of the new Death Guard without changing the model, which I quite like. My counts as Typhus here has got the same treatment with the billowing clouds and a couple other little conversions. I've got together a FW DG dreadnaught and all the other elite characters on the way as well as the reorganized Vectorium squads. I want to get some paint down on them first since they are hard to see in primer.
Thanks for looking! Any C&C is greatly appreciated. Happy Hobbying everyone!

Great rust details! How'd you do it?
35246
Post by: genom.cor
Thanks Zid. Basically layer metal, then stipple on a dark brown medium brown then orange in decreasing layers. This works for paint but works best with pigment powders. I used Vallejo powders here but further back in the blog and in my gallery you can see examples of the effect in paint, on Mamon etc.
I've added the blood to the 'wounds' and added verdigras to the gold, which doesn't show well in the pic bit anyway

I love the Chaos Warhound, it’s perhaps my favourite Titanic unit. Have you done physical work on the corroded bits, or do they come like that?
Also, how difficult was Mortarion to repose? I’ve got ideas for my own Morty and I’m dragging my feet about taking a saw to him...
35246
Post by: genom.cor
I know right? Too bad its guns dont have an area effect though, because in game itbis far from the God of Death it should be. Does any one really think its worth 2,000 points? But anyway, it comes exactly like this, i havent done any conversions at all. Considering the size and complexity of the hound I absolutely love the model Really well designed and weighted. I thought I'd need a base but it is actually very stable.
The repose on morty wasn't too hard actually though I'd hesitate to take the saw to him. I took a saw to Magnus and haven't gotten back to him yet. Not that I regret it, but I definately bit off alot as soon as I started hacking at him. I really didn't want a repeat with morty

There is progress on the Titan, but I haven't got the pics up yet, for now here's wips of the characters of The Tainted. I'm not sure how the fluff of the warband is going to look though they definately retconned Vraks if Necrosius is now leading The Tainted. Anyway... the theme I'm going with is 4th cohort, so unlike the other DG we are led by sorcerers (Necrosius) and have a heavy daemonic influence in the army. The Tainted was once known for its 'Carnival of Chaos' what was basically a monster beastiary. Based off the old Vraks aesthetic, I like to keep my regular infantry more as zombie astartes and so I use the new much more tentacle and mutation ridden models to represent characters and champions. On to the models.
Here is the plague surgeon
Biologus Putrifier (and one of the first Plague Marines I've ever had)
Foul Blightspawn
Tallyman (that is a camera that the old remembrancer has at his feet and I have a lot of ideas of what to do with this model but I'm still figuring it out completely.. suggestions welcome)

Post by: monkeytroll
Nice work on the oozing wounds on the warhound.
Carnival of Chaos sounds like a lot of fun with loads of potential.
Bonus points for the old-skool plague marine, and interesting take on Blightspawn.
35246
Post by: genom.cor
Thanks Monkeytroll! Always nice to know you're around. For the carnival I've got 3 plague ogryns, an old GUO and warmahordes conversion that will all count as Princes and be a bodyguard for Morty. I'm also still working on that blight spawn and Putrifyer. But since Mamon is the patron of the army I figured it's only right that his minion have some role of distinction. Also, I like the idea of him barfing a stream of corruption as his plague spewer.
Here's more of the Titan, Exterior progress on the painted weathering is continuing at a pretty good pace. Moving on to the weathering powders soon and followed up with one last gore touch up that should pretty much be it. The interior is several colors in though i haven't gotten any pictures worth uploading yet.

How you describe the building of this thing? Is it a pain in the posterior or relatively simple?
35246
Post by: genom.cor
Oops my bad Excommunicatus, i blame that on autocorrect! t's certainly not easy. In fact its one ofnthe most difficult models ive ever done. Do you enjoy 3D puzzles? Because that's the best way to describe it. Thats said, if you've worked with resin and arent afraid of doing some pinning, using your brain and taking your time, a warhound is an amazingly well designed model. I suppose it depends if you enjoy a challenge or not. I guess it is a pain in the ass... but a good pain Automatically Appended Next Post: Well. The Titan is pretty much finished. I need to do a photo shoot for it but that was a fun one. Daddy Mort's next. Here we go.

Sexy. Yeah, they're a bit flat, eh? The photos?
Looking forward to seeing how you improve them.
EDIT - Are you using your phone? What do you have your resolution set at? In my experiments, I've noticed that Dakka tends to compress anything over 4.9MP which leads to blurry, grainy and generally crappy photos.

@Excommunicatus: Thanks for the tip! I'll play around with the resolution now that I know that. Basically I need to set up a photo studio
@KernelTerror: Thanks KT! I appreciate it! It was alot of fun, just as you predicted!
With the titan competed, I'm moving on to another big project, rebuilding my Deathguard! Able to be seen earlier in this blog, I'm going to be doing a complete revamp of the army.
This army is centered around the special characters Mamon and Necrosius (and of course Mortarion). Previously the two led individual warbands but since the release of 8th it seems like Necrosius has been retconned to the ... I would say mortal or non-daemonic but I mean... anyway, he is now the High Sorceror of Tainted apparently and his Apostles of Contagion got reconned into Codex Deathguard. So, being the fluff bunny that I am, the plan is to rebuild the whole army incorporating the new 8th ed models. Aestheticly this presented a challenge as my army goes all the way back to 3rd, meaning both the scale and level of nurgles rot differs from model to model. This is especially apparent with the old 3rd ed plague marines and some of my older conversions. Even my FW conversion pieces look less tainted by comparison. After much scratching my head while pouring over the next models, I realized that the new plague marines with tentacles and Daemonic mouths all over the place could still match the rest of army's, primarily Vraks era aesthetic, by being Champion's of Nurgle. Obviously their increased size and many blessings of nurgle denote their favored status by Grandfather. Plus they look properly blessed enough to base conversions on for all the new Codexs officers and elites.
Enough Blabbing WORM!! Here is the paint scheme progression for the army.
I'd love to know what you think about them so far. More to come as I get work done on individual squads and characters. Grandfather's blessings upon you!

I'd advise taking a butcher's at Tyranid Horde's plog and the lightbox he/she just bought. Comes with a bunch of backgrounds and lights.
It's $9.20 CAD on Amazon.ca so it'll probably be even cheaper on the American site.
Might be too small for a Warhound, though.

Warhound turned out good
The touch of chaos has many blessings, Papa Nurgle's treats are varied. Marines of all sizes and states of mutation are welcome.

Post by: genom.cor
@Excommunicatus: Good Looking out! I think you are absolutely right about the light box. I've definately added some things to my Amazon cart that should help. Thanks!
@monkeytroll: Cheers! Thanks monkey!
I had an epiphany and decided to turn the 2nd and 3rd edition models into a 30k army. They may not be corrupted enough for current era but they are definately post-infection. I think they'll actually match pretty well for late war era 30k DG in any case they are already mostly painted. Plus, there is a bunch of them so putting an infantry army together to pair with the 40k armor should be quick. Many of them bear the same Cthonian runes as the rest of the army and can be thrown in for Apoc level games. *dusts hands* *nods head*
Anyway, on to these new guys. Batch painting is underway.

While I don't hold myself out as an expert in these matters, I think your photos would benefit massively from some editing.
I'd recommend whacking down the Brightness/Light and whacking up the Contrast/Clarity, both of which you can do pretty easily even in the software that bundles with *spits* Windows.
If you can grab a copy of GIMP (which is freeware) you can add filters to get that sci-fi green 'pict-capture' look and start trying all kinds of mad stuff.
Have you seen KrautScientist's photoshop efforts?

If I may request something, you did some "bird's eye" shots of your buildings, at the precise vertical on top of it, which is brilliant to get an idea of the mapping of a terrain piece '(keep doing those). Would an airborne shot of the kind be possible for your entire table ? Would give a nice idea of the amount of work put into this piece.

@KernelTerror: Thank you KT! I've got all the terrain assembled including the fortress now after this last effort, so tonight you get your wish!
@monkeytroll: Cheers mate!
Here's some overheads. Im particularly interested in what you think of the Fortress. Passable? Thanks for looking.

Thanks for these pics genom.cor ! This table looks like a proper urban battlefield, with the rust and decay to go well with your army !
The fortress still looks good, but if that is what you are concerned about, it does look cleaner than the buildings you recently reworked, for sure. Not necessarily a bad thing though, if the imperial forces are still holding the thing, I would expect them to repair and clean it !

Thanks KT! The fortress isn't quite finished yet but I think you're right and I may take it easier on the rust than with the rest of the board for when I use it with loyalists.
Heres some models eye views from around the board. Thanks for looking!

I've been neglecting my little well of despair here on Dakka, but I'm back and determined to remedy that with consistent updates. Today, I present the Scar of Dishonor in its final glory. A living altar to Grandfather Nurgle and still bearing it's original Legio Mortis colors, this daemon machine finally nears completion. Just a few interior details to finish. Thanks for stopping in!

Table looks great as always, I'm looking forward to the battle report. That's a lot of super heavy tanks to be going against.

+"The whole thing, it all happened in a second Sir. The damn thing must have been powered down and crouched behind that Administratum building cuz one second there's nothing on any sensors and in an instant it's just there and... Emperor. Before we could even report contact One Three went up In a flash of light and flipped over. Company opened fire and One Two hit center-mass with the Volcano directly, looked like a good one but the bastard just took one step backward and then ... well .. it hit us back directly. One two, the whole thing when nuke in an instant. Gone. We slammed the engines and broke out. I was holding down primary fire the whole time, pouring shots into its cockpit! *coughing fit* I saw it's plasma coil lite up and in an instant *spits bloody mucus* Everything went white. Woke up here with no arms, legs and total body burns! Hahaha! Feels just like waking up from a "Jungle Nap" back home! Hahaha! *coughing fit* Can't wait for my second shot at him Sir! *vomits blood*

Hey there fellow Dakkites! I'm back to work on some traitors and of course that means I'm firing back up this plog. I'm pulling out the thousand sons for the first time since 7th edition. I'm getting started with the most ambitious model in the army, Magnus converted to be in a flying pose. Here's the base and a preview of the build so far. Thanks for dropping by!

Decided to make a new loin cloth here. And I think I'm going to move the other one around back

Wow, Flying Magnus is looking great so far! I love the dynamism of your re-posing: the creature looks fiercer and more menacing mid-swoop.
