Snails are on the move.

THis year I'm sculpting loads of bugs and started with some snails.
Here are some concept shells I made. Currently sculpting a couple of these.

I really like the sculpts for the most part, but had one point of constructive criticism. Been trying to get time to make a pic highlighting it, but been so crazy here just wanted to go ahead and give the feedback and can elaborate later if needed!

The two shells on the lower left have these nice spikes breaking up the profile of the curve. I think the top one of the two is what you sculpted, and they are smaller, but still they help break up the profile and make it look dangerous.

Is there any way you could add that to the first snail shell you sculpted? I absolutely love that snail, but its shell needs something, I think, especially to break up its profile.

What do you think? Otherwise, absolutely brilliant sculpts, imo!

Ever heard of Flail-Snails of Fear and Flame?

Also, the bone snail could be something interesting- maybe some sort of dessicated, undead snail with a spinal shell. I still think you should do one with a drill tongue projecting out- you got the 'maw-tooth-grinder' going on the 'crazy' snail, which is sweet- but you could push it just that little bit more, I think.

Thanks! I got a bit carried away with the texture work to the point that I did sculpt texture on the underside of the snails too, so the part that your going to glue to the base and never see again is actually textured too

I think its a good idea mate unfortunately these have been sold and sent to the company that will produce them ( I believe they have sent them to the caster already too)... so I cannot change them now. On the plus side its something easier to convert once I have some copies for myself.

I tried to avoid fragile things since these will be heavy duty big monsters and a thin drill would snap very often and easy. Love the idea though. Snails are like a rich canvas for cool concepts but I believe 4 variants its plenty for me for now I really need to explore different bugs.

When I sculpted these I was thinking about the speed thing and:

The stone one when retracted can be mistaken with a normal rock until you get to close and... its to late for you.
The normal one can be inside a dark cave hanging on the ceiling shadows only to drop itself on who dares to enter the cave
My mind drifted so much with these that I was imagining a huge rock Snail mum blocking the cave exit once you enter it only to have thousands of her little snailings to slowly feast on you.
These fellas can be scary.

Thanks all for the wonderful ideas and critiques, love it! and as you may have noticed I'm quite passionate with ideas of deadly critters.

Thank you all very much, to be honest plastic is really easy to work with and a bit of work here and there you can turn GW Orruks into something more dynamic. I think I will struggle more when I do the savages with Bow and arrows since reposing into shooting arrows etc is more demanding.

Was not my iintention to tease... well not the main one that is

So one month ago I got a new challenge since Otherworld miniatures commissioned me to re imagine their Colossal Slug.

The brief was quite open, they wanted a HUGE Slug highly textured with a modernized and fantasy like style. This was just about my favourite subject, bugs!
Gastropoda have been quite a fun ride with the snails and now the slug.

Details

Scale

The kit will have 3 pieces, main body and 2 pair of eyes.

Been doing loads of Mollusca and even if by now I would call it finished I'm happy to say that during this weekend I will post Slugs concept art of some Medium sized slugs I want to sculpt asap.
Hope you guys liked the Colossal Slug, for sure it has been just a pleasure for me.

Love the third pic, and the one in the center of the last! I think the bumps / spikes on the back of the last one should be carried through the others, rather than the very smooth back section shown on some. It makes it seem more complete, whereas if it's smooth I keep looking for a snail shell to be added

Very cool concepts!!

Mr Bug Man blog @ 2016/06/12 16:18:39

Post by: Anvildude

I'm with RiTides about the lack of shell somehow seeming like 'uncompleted snail', but I undestand that Slugs do look like that- maybe it's just a difference between the drawing and how the actual full-model texture would look.

Though having one that's super-duper ueber smooth might be interesting.

I favor all of the slugs in the group pic, or the first slug + some spikes. Not really a fan of the tentacle eyestalks on slug 2 and 3, prefer the quasi-realism of 1.

Many more insects with a fantasy twist will soon be created for your adventures.

Great sculpt, looks fantastic, agree with RiTides it looks a little off with the tail and antenna, but you have kept true to their design, so not your sculpt at issue. If anything you have nailed natures design quite well, so its her fault it looks weird.

Post by: NAVARRO

Whip scorpions are really weird, I know, but kind of cool since they spray liquid from that tail that smells like vinegar, so yeah really odd creature.
Mother nature does give us some crazy study subjects.
While sculpting I really had to make some elements cast friendly ( tail and antennas), so little tweaks to the proportions had to be made. In the end I also added some fantasy twists just to make it more wicked.

Speaking of odd creatures Im finishing one now that is as alien as it can be.

Slug wise I will try to make 2 or 3 tops but first I just received a few more commissions so I need to get around them.

Its been quite a prolific year for sculpting so far.

Octopus is really great sculpted ! I also love other Your works .
Can You show the whole process of sculpting ? Do You use Green Stuff ?

Mr Bug Man blog @ 2016/10/21 21:28:31

Post by: NAVARRO

Thanks all.

My favourite sculpting putty is Greenstuff and sometimes I use Milliput superfine white for building up internal volumes.
It really depends on the size of the piece but I do it the traditional way.

Start up with a bended wire as "skeleton" and then build up the muscles with greenstuf and finalize with detail/texture work.
There are other putties out there ( probably less difficult to sculpt with) but I'm addicted to the greenstuff.

Snails of war are distributed between

Mortal Arrow miniatures - 2 first snails and the tentacled slug

Otherworld miniatures - This latest flail snail and the mega big slug.

So in total 3 snails and 2 slugs ( one of them of huge size)

You know... the oaks around here (especially the white oaks) always have leaves hanging on until next spring. I think that's an excellent idea. Ours always appear in small bunches rather than just a lone leaf here or there.

So the incoming year I intend to get into a full Primaris army of spacewolves ( he likes those colours best).

Any tips or advices into building this army?

Party indeed! I kind of missed the 40k things and a new project is always the best thing to start the year. Sorting out the look and feel of my SW… No bling bling or ott stuff all very clean simple neat style, bases high scifi, not the ussual 40k debris. I think its the Starwars influence.

Around March 2006 I was sculpting some alien figures for my own private collection. More than a decade later I would not imagine that this specific sculpt would still actually be a point of interest big enough to have it spin cast and reproduced in metal for some friends. I do sometimes wonder the longevity of the pieces I have done so long ago.

Now with so many I will repose and convert some to finally have a unit of 5 Tau Genestealer hybrids.

Glad you enjoyed the blog. I only sculpt on my free times, long nights after I finish my 9 to 5 full-time job and take care of the kids, put them to bed etc… Usually start up around 10 most days if I'm not reallllly tired and finish up between Midnight and 1 in the morning. I do sculpt a lot on weekends to keep up with demand.
I do love it, even if most of the time is just more work. If I could pay the bills with only sculpting I would do it, but as it stands it's not a profitable venture to pursue.
Graphic designer by day, parent in the evening, sculptor at night.

Mr Bug Man blog @ 2019/03/01 17:41:28

Post by: NAVARRO

Thank you. The idea for this project is that eventually this universe and characters will all have a descriptive background written but the writter is still working on this so my concepts are kind of a bit ahead of time. In the end its a flexible creative process so from the initial basic guidelines I create some concepts that will be complemented with fluff.

Mr Bug Man blog @ 2019/05/20 19:34:04

Thank you guys.

I did enjoy doing the bases, they are quite simple and the best of all is that they are just for my own things, so I could mess with it without stresses.

The myconid centipede was not an easy one, specially the cuts for casting but overall it was a positive job and I learned a lot with it.

Oh I was looking into painting handles and I needed a system cheap and easy for batch painting poxwalkers… I came up with 20 handles with just the raw materials I had here and cost me near to nothing really. I will post it soon. Oh and labour wise it was 1hour work, that easy!

Just so cool! Amazing sculpting, as usual.
It would be fascinating to get a glimpse into your process: how you work your way up to such incredible results.

Mr Bug Man blog @ 2019/09/25 16:37:27

Post by: NAVARRO

Thanks tinfoil.

The process itself is not complicated and probably other sculptors do it better and faster. The way I do it is probably not even the ideal one.

There is always a spark of an idea somewhere, either a descriptive text or something I have seen on movies or comics. Then I doodle some concept art, I love this part because most of the times takes to new places and never ending brainstorms. Once concept is nailed and Im happy with it, I sculpt it. I sometimes let the clay flow into its own shape, meaning some concepts on paper sometimes are not well translated into 3d or miniatures, the cool factor of the medium always wins it for me.

That's about it.
