Sounds like there's some good learning points there for the organisers - not sure how hard it would be to do a printed sheet per table per round with the special rules on, for instance.

Your army looked good, as do the pictures of the others armies you showed.

Yeah, or even just updating it on a projection / whiteboard would be fine. I'll suggest that to them next time, as I can happily provide them with projectors!

Thanks! Yeah, the event was actually really fun, but it was annoying that I never really got to finish a game. I'm thinking of dong a bit of updating to the Noise Marine army at the start of this blog, to turn them into a 30k army - probably just do some new EC shoulder pads and paint up a mk4 tactical squad, but enough so that I have a relatively elite army next time a tournament comes up!

I've started a second batch of Word Bearers to up them to a full HH force - maybe I should start a separate PLOG for them as they're not PINK?

i've assembled, pre-shaded and coloured them all in clear red, just starting on the details. Shoulder pads and backpacks are done separately in grey.

First, some Gal Vorbak, and the two Blade Slaves to accompany Zardu:

Then, a squad of 10 Assault Marines with some modern backpacks I had spare.

Support from 5 rotor cannons and 7 missile launchers

Five more old-school Terminators, embiggened with a big of grey knight and anvil bionic arms.

And finally, three third-party jet bikes I've had lying around for years..

They're not metallic - just very glossy at the moment!

They're primed black, then airbrushed through a few shades of grey up to white. Then two coats of clear red (Minitaire Ghost Tint Bloody Red) to 'colour' the pre-shading. The clear paint leaves them really glossy, but once they've been detailed and washed, I'll use matt varnish to remove the glossiness.

These are just the standard kits - FW Gal Vorbak and the Zardu Layak / Blade Slaes kit. Weirdly, for me, there aren't any conversions!

angelofvengeance wrote:What's the difference between Blade Slaves and Gal Vorbak then?

Gal Vorbal are meant to be the first Possessed - they're quite terrifying S5 T5 2W combat monsters which tend to be an auto-include in a Word Bearers list. Zardu is a special daemonoligist character and the blade slaves are his bodyguard - enslaved to Daemon a weapons which make them like crazy 3W Gal Vorbak...

Got the transfers on his squad - 7th Assault Squad, Relic Company, Unspeaking Chapter. I had most of these parts left over so cobbled them together into a unit - Maxmini heads as usual, some 40k jump packs, Anvil Industry legs rescued from a failed project years ago and a mix of Chaos and Imperial chain swords.

And, another squad done - Heavy Support Squad with Missile Launchers. Again, I had a load of these old Missile Launchers left over from my Badab Tiger Claws army, so thought I'd put them into use.

And here's the force so far!

- Zardu Layak & Blade Slaves
- Kor Blimey - Chaplain
- Tactical Squad
- Assault Squad
- Gal Vorbak
- Terminator Squad
- Heavy Support Squad
- Deredeo Dreadnought

Thanks AW!

Next batch up - here are the last bits of infantry done and I'm ready to start on the vehicles. First, the Rotor Cannon Support Squad, using old Warzone plastic rotor cannons.

My Librarian, Hol Imoli - ready to give some extra psychic punch to the summoning part of the army

And a team of Rapiers - these are the same as my Militia ones - Mantic tracks and scratch-built centres with old Space Crusade weapons on top.

And finally, a small Sky Hunter squadron made from the Maxmini Gothic Jetbikes.

Those jetbikes are mighty sweet and may see some use in my forces also if I can get my hands on some (will count as normal bikes in 40k games methinks).

Thanks! The bikes would work fine as ground bikes - they're not as massive as the Scimitars (which are a good 1.5 bikes long). It's unfortunate that you can only get them direct from Maxmini though - I think they stopped shipping to distributors last year!

Post by: ArbitorIan

So, the next thing is to start work on the motor pool. Here's what I have to work with!

Ancient relics! I can't to go too tank heavy as I'm planning to use The Dark Brethren RoW a lot and it only allows one heavy support, so everything is a transport. My plan is to recondition all of them, and also make the Land Raiders into original-style Spartans where the Spartan front is magnetised.

I've started with a bit of recasting just to finish off the models. I had some missing doors. I've also cut down the spindly, circular lascannons mounts to provide a wider mounting point, since the lascannons were always very easily breakable.

For that reason, you never find enough of the original lascannons on eBay purchases like this, so I made a mould for the side ones and have constructed some extra weapons for the top hatch point. The side ones are magnetised to become 'quad' lascannons when being a Spartan. The extra too hatch weapons are swappable. On the Spartan configuration this would be twin Heavy Bolters, but the either can be used in the LR Proteus configuration.

I've also beefed up the engines and replaced the easily breakable aerial with a radar dish.

The Rhinos needed a bit of work - I've recast the pintle bolt guns to get enough, and made ends for the exhausts from plastic tubing - another thing that tends to break off.

I've also recast some assault ramps for the Spartan fronts - the only thing I had lying around was a (built) SW flyer, so that rune thingy is going to files down into a diamond-shaped Word Bearer icon!!

After another day at the geek club, I had the basic superstructures built for the Spartans.

They're pretty simple at the moment, and held in by friction, but they'll eventually be magnetised to the top hull. I need to add a ton of detail and fill all the gaps, but you can see the scale.

Rescued some old rhino parts to help fill the big empty spaces!

I've also started on a few more RT-inspired vehicles. First is this classic GRAV ATTACK!!! I'm going to build a kit that I can recast that fits perfectly on some empty deodorant bottles I got from Amazon - that way I can built loads of them!

Like the Spartans, I'm going to make mine look a little more modern, so I've raided the bits box and found a ton of useful parts.

Started out by glueing and filling on the model, but with electrical tape where the attached bits are so that I can peel them off when dry.

The turret is the back part of an old Eldar Vyper embiggened. I'll drill a point in for magnetisation for different weapon load outs.

Thanks everyone! Yeah, I've been meaning to do this for AGES. The grav-attack parts are now in moulding rubber. I've also been working on a ball-dread conversion - the original kit made bigger and with a set of castable, articulated legs. I'll get photos up when I can.

Big H wrote:You can buy empty deodorant containers on amazon? Where's the fun in that.....???

I actually found it really hard to find 'normal' shaped deodorant bottles in a shop. Modern brands are all contoured and wobbly and have groovy bits, or are artfully angular. Couldn't find anything that looked like a 'normal' deodorant bottle...

I was hoping to get the WB vehicles finished by the time of the London Heresy event in May, but it looks like I'm going to have too much work to manage it, so I'm going to have to take my Militia again.

To that end, I've decided to assemble and paint my Shadowsword kit in the week I do have, so that I can run with two super-heavies! More tanks means less little guys to move around!

Started assembly in a hotel room this morning:

I've built it in the Shadowsword formation, but I want to be able to field lots of variants, so I'm planning to make a plasticard 'bottom' so that the turret is moveable.

Stormlord variant (the back bay will be a separate drop-in piece)

Shadowsword, Banehammer and Stormsword gun parts. The Stormsword bit needs 'holding' on so I'll build some tubing for that. The Volcano cannon is too heavy, so I might build and attach a bipod which can sit on the hull and support it.

The sponsons just hang on the side. The lascannons will be magnetised and I'm planning to make the magnets themselves look like recessed targeters for when it's a Shadowsword.

Finally, I assembled the other turret as a Hellhammer for the already-built Baneblade.

No magnets on this - it all just sort of hold together!

Finished the base colours - I'm just going to get a few simple colours on and do the weathering so it looos like bits part of the same army this weekend. I'll go back and do details and transfers later.

This is it separated into bits - I built up the back section so that the Stormlord troop bay becomes removable.

And then I also did a second Leman Russ Vanquisher turret to complete the list.

I've been working on a fancy version of my Militia & Cults tactica at http://arbitorian.tumblr.com/post/158850910285/tactica-imperialis-militia-cults-30k and putting together photos of as many units as I could.

It's been a while, but I've managed to find some time to continue work on the RT-era vehicles for the Word Bearers.

The las cannons have been assembled out of recast bodies and plasticard barrels. They are glued onto the Proteus bodies as one set, and magnetised to take a second set for the Spartan conversion.

The Spartan fronts have been riveted and had detail added.

When all assembled, the finished model is pretty huge - about as long as a FW Spartan, and a little wider at the guns.

Thanks! That's one of the of the things I quite like about the Heresy vehicle plates in the books - simple stripes and diagonal lines to keep the vehicles varied, but still looking the same. Also, I think whole vehicles in that shade of red might be a bit much - red accents looks a lot more believable...!

So, after a few failed attempts, I've finally got the turret on my grav-attack kit to a place where I'm happy to start casting. It also took ages to figure out how to glue the bits on - nothing short of two-part epoxy would stick to the deodorant bottle!

Anyway, here's the first go at my MK1 Grav Attack (counts as Javelin). The multimelta can be swapped out for any other weapon, so I'm planning on building a squadron of multimelta/missole launcher and a squadron with 'classic' lascannons in the turret.

A bit, though I’ve mostly been using them as Tallarn rather than anything else. The Renegades list is a bit weird and counterintuitive at the moment.

Just under 8000. Although this has inspired me to build up/rescue a load of the tanks I had lying around in bits so it’ll go up again soon.

On the workbench are:
- 3 x Thunderer Siege Tanks
- 6 x Leman Russ (making a full company)

Ok, the workbench is getting full! Just some milliput filling and one more conversion to do and I can get the spray cans out!

Thunderers!

Vindicator guns on the front of standard Leman Russes - the top pieces are actually the base ring from a Quad-Gun that surprisingly fits perfectly in the old Russ turret ring. Had to cast some more once I realised that!

Hydras / Wyverns!

I bought these turret kits ages ago from Ramshackle to use as terrain but I never had. Plus, though I bought them for quad-guns, it turns out they also came with little short barrels too. So, some old Chimera bits, some magnets and a bit of plasticard later and I have some crappy Renegade Hydras/Wyverns.

Leman Russes!

Six more Leman Russ chassis! I've built three more standard turrets but I already have so many turrets I don't need any more. Three of these have been retrofitted with internal magnets to take sponsons and three are just sponsonless. This gives me enough for a 10-tank company.

Medusas!

Two more chassis to give me a full squadron of Medusas. The gun is actually in casting rubber, as it's impossible to buy standard Medusas any more, so I had to remake the parts for the third one. This will give me three Basilisks and three Medusas.

Atlas Recovery Tank

What to do with a spare Leman Russ chassis? Stick a load of gubbins on it and call it a recovery tank!

Great looking army! The colour scheme is quite unique.

This makes me realise that FW really need to show size comparisons on their site. I had no idea the Gorgon was that big, and I saw a Mastodon the other day - it's way bigger than it looks on the site! I'd buy more models if I could see how much resin I'm getting for my money!

Yeah, it’s based on the Marcharius tracks with the whole ‘boat’ section built out from there so it’s pretty huge! This was also the kit from before the re-make, and was one of the worst FW kits I’ve ever assembled - massive gaps that needed filling. I haven’t seen one of the new ones yet - not sure if they’re exactly the same or a whole newer, better set of parts....

With that many tanks available, surely you need to add some kind of design that you can only see when they are deployed next to each other. A chaos star or some joke about someone's mother

The group shot up top is most impressive it has to be said.

After about a month on the workbench, I finally did the tank batch! I've just got a few loaders to build, so no medusas yet. Here's everything else!

First, six additional Leman Russ tanks. I did six hulls and three more standard LRBT turrets, so I now have a full company of ten.

Then, I converted up three Thunderer Siege Tanks from Leman Russ hulls and Vindicator cannon mounts. They've got dozer blades for getting in nice and close.

To help all these guys out, here's an Atlas Recovery Tank, made from various tech gubbins from the bits box.

Moving onto the Chimera-based vehicles, I've been meaning to do this conversion for ages. Two Wyverns/Hydras made using Ramshakle Games' turrets. I just build a basic flatbed out of the chimera kit and some plasticard.

And the final thing for this batch is a Manticore, which can also be a Deathstrike. The Manticore rack is made from various weird flyer sections and Ork Bomms, and because of the downward curve of the missile section the support needs to be quite high, which makes the Deathstrike missile seem REALLY high up, but I doubt I'll be using the Deathsrike that much anyway. I have plant to convert up a little 'crane' option for the magnet mount so I can use it as a Trojan Support Vehicle too.

EmberlordofFire8 wrote:I really like those thunderer siege tanks. What's the top hach from?

It's actually the base plate from the quad-guns that come with the Bastion kits. I had two spare because I'd cut off the gun mount for another project ages ago. Turns out they fit exactly in the hole, so I press-folded them and made enough for all the tanks!

KernelTerror wrote:Gorgeous tanks ! That pink paint scheme of yours always looked good, but this are probably some of the models on which it worked the most nicely.

Thanks! It's probably because the tanks offer much more space to do extra weathering. For the tanks, the process is:

1. Spraycan white primer
2. Spraycan pink (Montana 'Pale Lavender' for these)
3. AIRBRUSHING! Airbrush pink/white mix to highlight panels
4. Masking tape off for grey bits & airbrush grey bits dark grey then light grey.
5. Masking tape off for big silver sections and tracks & airbrush all silver.
6. Final bits of airbrushing - masking tape off white areas on missiles, a bit of rusty orange on the dozer blades, a bit of bronze and black on big gun barrels.
7. ACTUALLY PAINT STUFF WITH A BRUSH. Gold bits, silver guns, green lights, brown cloth. That's it.
8. DYES! Modelmates weathering dyes - explode on rust red on tracks an oily colours on pistons and decking.
9. TRANSFERS! All the transfers.
10. PENS! Write on some heretical text and chaos scrawls with brown/orange Sigma Micron Pens.
11. SPONGES! Rip up some sponges (read: KR foam inserts) and sponge weather with brown, then dark grey, concentrating on edges. Then final pass with shiny silver, which allows you to pull back anywhere that accidentally got too-big splodges on.
12. Spraycan gloss varnish. Leave overnight.
13. OIL WASH! Entire tank gets a burnt umber oil wash. Leave around half an hour.
14. Remove Oil Wash! For small minis I use cosmetic tips, but feth that for tanks. Rip up more sponge, very lightly dip in white spirit, and then violently wipe across the model, pulling away the oil wash from any exposed areas. If you go really hard, you get free extra weathering. Oil wash should be left vaguely near the cracks.
15. Spraycan matte varnish.

Only two steps actually involve using a brush, so each step takes about 5 mins per tank, and there's loads of variation in how they look because of all the steps.

On Marines, I kinda have to skip steps 4,5 and 6 and do it by hand, and then completely skip 8, 9 and 10. For Militia, I skip all the above plus 11. So less chance for random variation.

OKAY. So, I broke out the old Noise Marines recently and they’re looking a little dated - could do with a bit more variation and some better basing.

So, I’ve sprayed up a load of old Emperors Children pauldrons to white and swapped them onto the majority of the chaos marines. These should beak up the mucky pink a bit.

I’ve also started building some scenic 32mm bases for them. I had a load of old Scibor 25mm ones which I’ve sawed off and combined with some ballast, rubber crumb and cork to make some ruined rocky bases. I’ll cast these tomorrow.

Thanks, everyone. I'm off to Zagreb for a few weeks with work, so I thought I'd airbrush up a little bundle of stuff so that I can do all the detail painting while I'm out there. It's time to GO TZEENTCH...!

First, I have 20 old-style Thousand Sons (with the metal heads) and a FW Thousand Sons Dreadnought. Sprayed pink and airbrush highlighted.

Then, a collection of old metal 1ed/2ed Daemons sprayed pink, blue and yellow, including an original Lord of Change and one of the old Daemon Princes. The two big yellow Horrors with beaks are gonna be Heralds.

And finally, enough of my 32mm bases base coloured to do all the Thousand Sons. The Daemons will all go on resin 32mm/25mm slottabases that I'm planning to make and cast when I get back.

I've just returned from Croatia and here's where I'm at: as well as the Daemons above, the first batch of Thousand Sons have all their base colours done, and are ready for transfers and weathering.

A big batch of bases is also complete and washed.

And I've started on the second batch of Thousand Sons: enough flamer guys to get me up to 3 squads of 9 Rubric Marines, Ahriman and five Scarab Occult terminators converted from regular Tartaros and WE 'Egypt Sons' parts.

Rubric Marines (three squads of 9 including Sorcerer)

Dreadnought (the old FW resin model)

And then I completed all the Tzeentch Daemons! Again, I have one more Herald to do once the Discs arrive.

Lord of Change

Started on the new Chaos Renegades infantry. I felt like I needed to get more differentiation between Cultist, Militia, Disciples and Marauders, and with my club playing slowly through Vraks, I thought the Tallarns weren't looking Chaosy enough. So, new plan is as follows:

Chaos Cultists: as I currently have - a mix of Cawdor, Redemptionist and plastic Chaos Cutists with some odds and ends thrown in

Renegade Militia: Blackstone Fortress traitor guard mixed with some Cadian bits and more to differentiate them. Looking at four or five infantry squads and a couple of mortar units.

Renegade Disciples: FW Renegades, mixed with Cadian and Blackstone bits, and converted to look just as spiky as the militia guys. Looking at thirty or so models, covering disciples and command squads.

Marauders: Beastmen, built from the Blackstone Fortress ones, with added fantasy bits and some old third-party models with bigger guns. Mostly set up as murder cultists but maybe some sneaky batsman snipers too!

Here's the first batch of militia conversations.

And I attached some Blackstone heads to some duplicate FW torsos, did some cloaks and set them up for casting so I could make more militia weapon teams.

Nice breakdown Ian, appreciate the effort to delineate the different flavors of non-astartes Chaos mortals. I'm also excited to see how these come together, as these are the first 'modern' army of plastic renegades / cultists I've seen using the Blackstone bits. I feel like there's demand for GW to just release the full renegade squad kit and stop sitting on it (my brother and I have a theory that a Renegade release ala GSC v1.0 (so like a squad or two, a couple characters and a vehicle upgrade sprue) is somewhere in the pipe, could theoretically be opposite the SOB release), but I haven't really seen people actively getting their hands dirty with what Blackstone provided, at least not on an army-scale.

SO, it's been a while but here's a ton of progress I got done over Xmas and January.

First, I finished off a load more of the old marines on the new bases. This also included making up the numbers and building some extra Chaos Marines and some more metal Chaos Terminators I had lying around.

Then, since Heresy is a bit dead nowadays, I decided to chaos-up the two Emperor's Children units I had bought and make them work in my 40k army. Both the Phoenix Guard and Palatine Blades had some Chaos bits added and swapped around with an additional model to make 6-man squads. The Phoenix Guard will be run as Chaos Terminators with power axes, and the Palatine Blades as Chosen.

Seeing the new Obliterator models made my old spindly ones look really small, so I took off the arms and re-did the bodies using some Bitspudlo Cyborg Warmachine models

While I was there, I also used up an old pack of Maxmini hammers and built a squad of hammer chosen.

And finally, I got all those Blackstone Renegades painted up and mounted on trench bases as new infantry for my Renegades and Heretics army. They've been converted a lot, with loads of bits from the Cadian and Cultist sets, to give them a load more variety beyond the 7 BSF models. The old infantry (Tallarns) will be retired and maybe await repainting back to an imperial army.

After this, the plan is to do a batch of Renegade Disciples (using the FW Renegade kit) and a load of Renegade Heavy Weapon Teams using a mix of the two. I'll also have a bit sort-through of my existing cultists and weapon teams, and re-organise a lot of the models into useable units - possibly with different styles of Cultists for the Renegade army (on trench bases) and the Chaos Marine one (on ruins bases).

Oh yeah, I love me some old models. I prefer having armies of older models anyway, but I really don't mind as long as the army vaguely matches. Like, I'd happily have a load of 1ed Obliterators, but I wouldn't mix old and new ones in the same army!

Yeah, back in 7ed I'd basically stopped playing 40k and was only playing Heresy. I still found the game system a bit of a mess but it was LESS messy and fun to build armies. My Renegades & Heretics had basically become a Militia and Cults army, and I had planned to just turn all the CSM into a late-Heresy EC army, using the Noise Marines as Kakophoni. I got the Phoenix Guard and Palatine Blades to help with that, and was planning on doing whitte stripes down a lot of the R&H Malcadors and Basilisks to make them switchable for EC.

Once 8ed came out I MUCH preferred the system, and it heralded a bit of a 40k resurgence in my local club, to the point where Heresy went from being the most common sort of Warhammer played to basically never being seen. We wrote the 8ed Heresy Project, which was used for a while, but the general downturn in Heresy gaming kinda stopped interest. Which left me with these guys lying around, as well as some anachronistic pink vehicles I can't really use in an R&H army any more (Gorgon, Shadowsword, Thunderbolt). I've also got a (smaller) Imperial force going on, where all the vehicles are dark grey, so some of those might get repainted, leaving pink details or stripes or something so they can work for both armies!

More renegades for the pink horde!

First, I finished off a new Renegade Commander and rebased the two old FW Rogue Psykers so they can play as Malefic Lords.

Also, five of the Rogue Psykers from Blackstone Fortress to use as a squad.

Then I completed a batch of Disciples - these are made from the old FW torsos on Cadian legs, with various bits folded in from Blackstone Fortress and additional GS work to give them all the same sorts of fur and cloth cloaks that the Blackstone guys have.

And finally, the weapon teams for the Militia - six Mortar teams and two Heavy Stubber teams.

In a totally appropriate switch, I used some Quarantine time to get my Nurgle guys up and running.

First, some Nurgle Daemons. Whole lot took about four days - really simple airbrushing and a bit of weathering and oil washing. I have 24 Plaguebearers, 9 bases of Nurglings and this classic Great Unclean One ready to romp around the board.

And they'll be supporting these guys - a small detachment of Death Guard to go with the rest of my pink marines. The three main squads are old 90s models.

They're led by a Lord of Contagion, converted from Scibor and Deathshroud bits, and some Nurgle Terminators converted from Cataphractii and Blightlord bits. They ca be Blightlords in a Death Guard force or just Nurgle-marked Terminators.

Very nice - but far too fast for my liking

Love that they still fit in with the pink horde, nice subtle green you used.

Neat to see Nurgle joining the pale pink party And obviously big ups on more '90s

Three Chaos Knights done! They have enough magnetised weapons to do pretty much anything, including both of the Mechanicus variants.

Nice work! The FW armor kit is pretty boss, even in this age of plastic chaos knights.

Just some odds and ends completed over the last week:

First, the classic Abbadon model, on a great big base.

And then, Necrosius all ready to lead my Plague Marines in our Vraks campaign

Six Possessed, built out of spare parts and some of the old mutations frame

And finally, three marines with the fancy new Reaper Chaincannon. The ammo belt didn't fit properly around the old marine bodies, so they got ammo drums instead.

Tinybadaddon, all alone on that big bass Props on tidying up, dig them chaincannons, impressed that you've continued to stick with the smol marines to match the rest of the army. A good call but sooo much temptation in the NuChaos ...
