Copy away! It's a length of 1/16" square tube drilled out with a length of rod through the middle for the barrel. Stick that onto the existing heavy stubber receiver and you're golden

Screw it, will sculpt carapace onto the veterans too- except they won't have rebreathersand the helmets will be modified.

Having taken the decision to equip all my squads with carapace armour, I'm having to redo my command HQ. Not a fun prospect but one which needs doing. I also have an idea for my own version of Marbo, along with a little back story for his renaming.
I'm kind of having a problem sourcing parts for him and other things- it would seem that my usual bitz sites are out of stock of heavy stubbers (to make my HB stand-ins) and other assorted necessities, like meltaguns and plasma guns. Bother.

Me too, I will have a rummage for special weapons, the cadian ones look ridiculous on the DKOK bodies so I don't really need them

Cheers guys! I was after a pair of legs from the guard vehicle crew for Marbo- the standing ones. I could get some from Ebay but can't find any without buying a load of other parts at the same time, though I might have to!

I've done some more carapace sculpting this evening, not too long, just half an hour or so. Gone back and sculpted some armour onto the AC gunners too.

In order to distinguish more effectively between the Storm Troopers and Veterans (with both wearing carapace), I choose not to do the leg armour on the Veterans. They don't look like miniature walking tanks and this reflects the Storm Troopers being more elite. Plus the more obvious reason being I'm lazy...

Lol not having the leg armour is a good way to make the distinction, and like you say is easier for you =p

They look really good, I do love those cadian upgrade kits with the respirators, so cool.

The guns continue to look really good, and I love the medic cap, very well done, whats on the medics back though? out of curiosity.

Thanks J-paint! I think what you think of as the medic is actually the gunner for the Autocannon- it's one of the backpacks which come with the heavy weapon team.
I need another 2 boxes of cadians to finish my Storm Troopers and Vets. I'm thinking about making another HB stand in so both my vet squads have them- I would prefer to have the extra couple of shots per turn over the higher strength of the autocannon, after all I will have a Vendetta, Vulture, Vanquisher and meltagun armed Storm Troopers to take care of tanks!

oops! my bad, yup I meant the gunner, his hands were out of focus so they looked a bit like the bandaging hands you get on the cadian command sprue. My bad!

But yeah cant wait to see the HB.

Been working on the HB today- will need to do the green stuff armour and such on the gunner and fill the gap between his legs (ooooooo err!). Might even get a picture up before the day is through

Ok, so update time on my Storm Troopers and Veteran HB team!

Have done the armour on this dude- he's in the process of reloading and has ditched his empty power cell while reaching for another:

And this is the gunner with "HB":

Oh MAN! that guy reloading his power cell is AMAZINGLY COOL! the pose just looks so real! I love it, the tilted head is the clincher for me, gives him such character and i can imagine the cool head he's keeping while the bullets fly around him impacting on his cover in a staccato rhythm!

Thanks Bob! I've done the carapace armour on the MG gunner and on another couple of Storm Troopers, one with a plasma gun (pew pew!).

So I have 8 Storm Troopers done now I have an idea for a loader running to bring more ammunition to the MG gunner and plan to have LOTS of empty cases lying on the base...

Post by: Elnibbus

Quick update on the MG gunner- I really didn't have the inclination to do much tonight, I mainly sat and watched season 15 of south park...

I actually shortened the MG a little- after looking at it again and at the pictures it looked too long (was almost hanging off the edge of the base!). I've added some rubble to the base and bolter casings scattered about near the ejection port. The large space is for the loader who I have yet to make...

Looking supremely good here man, the shortened gun was definitely an improvement. Good use of sprue rubble too, in such an expensive hobby it always makes me happy when i get to use it.

Thanks dude, I just need to apply some paint to the models I have already done- I have coursework due in next week though so won't be able to spend as much time on them over the weekend as I'd like. Still, I'm happy at the speed of progression, possibly not as swift as yours j-paint but steady enough! I'm also skint at the moment so my next couple of boxes of Guard will have to wait :(
I have an idea for my next MG team- they will have the feed cover up and placing a new ammunition belt in. Well result in a lot of swearing I'm sure! I have also tentatively started my Marbo (just his right arm though, so don't get too excited).

Ok, so I might have lied when I said I'd leave it til tomorrow:

Made an exhaust system for the rear a la the real Tiger

(The small rods and lid in the inner tube are to prevent explosives being shoved down the exhaust)

Not looking too shabby overall:

This is a very different MBTs. this new Tiger looks much like a different soviet BT designs with torsion bar suspension and 1929-era cylindrical turret
This one could also be a possible optimization of Panzer 3 or Panzer 4. sadly the said project never seems to be realized.

@Lone Cat, erm... I never said it was going to be a 1:1 replica of a Tiger but more of an approximation. I think the turret looks quite like a that of a Tiger- I dunno, anyone else agree? Plus I couldn't find any road wheels to match so I had to make do unfortunately. Plus if it was a 1:1 of a Tiger, I may as well have just bought a Tiger kit and not bothered trying to do my own Grim-dark representation of such.
I think I will add gun sights to the lasguns though, just to spite you.

Hey, Elnibbus, first off, fantastic work. I love the conversions you've done.

Your Tiger tank looks fantastic. Did you use a Chimera as a base for it? I ask because I'd like to do something like this as a Vindicator:

The base for the Sturmtiger "Assault Mortar" was the Tiger tank, so I'm intrigued by what you've done. I've found several Sturmtiger kits in 1/48 or 1/35 scale. The 1/48 scale seems like it might be a little weak next to GW models, but I'm afraid 1/35 might be enormous. So, I'm just trying to think of how I might conver a Vindicator (or soemthing) along these lines....

@Yellowbeard, thanks dude. I did use a chimera as a base- I built up the front and the sides using plasticard. I made the chassis an inch longer so it would have the step at the front.

@Lone Cat, the road wheels are from an Ebay shop called dragon hobby in the US. I originally thought they would be bigger.

Hi folks. Been a bit quiet of late but it has been the festive season and unfortunately I've got exams (though they do finish on Friday so I'm hoping to get some more painting done at the weekend).

Anyhoo, I've been farting about with the airbrush I got for Christmas (I love my girlfriend sooooo much, Santa can do one) and I've come up with the following:

Bear in mind that this is my time using an airbrush properly (I used the GW spray gun which was poo). I guess the Chapter is pretty obvious too.

Thanks must go out to Scar and Garion on this forum.

Wow, that's looking nice, Elnibbus! I really like the fire effect. Can you describe how you're doing it? Or can you point me toward a tutorial on the technique? Thanks!

Post by: Elnibbus

Cheers Yellowbeard! Garion initially linked me to this tutorial on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y6TlMIYXWw

I didn't bother with the first stage because the base colour of the vehicle is red. Also, positioning the stencils on this was a pain in the backside- painting the rhino I have will be so much easier! I need to do some edge highlighting on the armour panels and such then a bit of weathering- nothing too major, just something to make it look used.

Actually, I have you to thank for my transition to Fire Hawks, Yellowbeard- I saw your thread and saw what a good job you were doing and decided to have a nose about their history. I'm going to use a Space Wolves list as I think the list fits their theme, even if they are supposed to be a codex chapter- they are very proud, stubborn, often reckless and like close-quarters firefights. Standard Marines will obviously fill the role of Grey Hunters, the more experience warriors Long Fangs and Wolf Guard etc.

I dunno, I'm not sure how well the individual Marines will turn out- don't think the above technique will work for the armour. I'm just going to freehand the flames onto them but will still use the airbrush to do the majority of them.

I was thinking about that. Do the shoulder pads separately and use a smaller template. You could line up 10 pads on a paint stick and do one after another. That way, you won't splash over on to the rest of the marine. You might do something similar for the legs, but they might be trickier

@nerdfest: Yeah, that guy's great, isn't he? Now that I know the technique, I notice that he turned the template in both directions (on the shield) so he gets these swells of flame at the bottom.

Evening all.

Been away for quite some time and I'm afraid I haven't been very busy with painting or modelling- uni had taken a precedent and I've been making kydex tactical equipment to order. Plus I've become a little disillusioned with Games Workshop of late- the push of hard-sell tactics in stores and the sheer lack of enthusiasm for existing hobbyists leaves a bier taste in the mouth, especially when you see prices go up and these new "one click deals" which don't actually save you any money at all. It's bollocks.

Anyway, I'm thinking about giving my Grenadiers a bit of a dusting off and getting my Marbo (aka "Steiner"), HB/AC teams and Storm Troopers squared away in the coming weeks and months.

Nerdy! How the devil are you old chap? I know, Bran has been neglected a whole load along with the rest of his company. This will be rectified at some stage. I would like to get more Guard done first since they are the most realistic (if possible) part of the game. Plus I have more ideas for MG teams and such than I do for Marines.

I make holsters for pistols and magazine carriers for airsofters, though I have had interest in shotgun cartridge pods for competition shooters.

Does anyone have any ideas for the colour scheme of my Storm Troopers? I'm thinking about either keeping the same colours as the rest of the Infantry however I've been toying with the idea of doing a blurred-edge kind of digi-cam. Think Starship Troopers: Invasion

It could look good, the only problem is at that scale is might just come out a blurry (not to mention impossible to actually paint!) I think the idea looks promising though, dont think i've seen digital camo used on infantry sized models before, only tanks, will be very interested to see how it looks.

I feel your pain about uni btw, most frustrating.

Ah yes, a fine idea, maybe you could even use a sponge to apply it? would make it incredibly fast....not sure how smooth it would be though.

After thinking on it, the armour will be too small to support the kind of detail I'd want from it. I reckon I'll do black fatigues and the dark green armour (I do after all want something a little more sinister looking, elite units throughout history haven't been noted for being 'nice').

Nerd, if I could afford a trip down under, I'll visit you and bring marbo with me! I have something in mind for him, a certain image in my head that I think would look suitable:

Standing up straight, as if his back were up against a wall (possible terrain piece on his base), anti-tank steilhandgrenate (stick grenade with loads of heads bound around it) in his right hand, his left against the wall as if he's about to chuck it round the corner. I was going to use the head from the Cadian veteran upgrade, the one that looks like he has a 40's style German army haircut (long top, shaved sides). He'll have rolled up sleeves. Holstered pistol, though I may put this in his left hand.

Good evening chaps and chappettes...

Have been away for a loooooooooooooooong time, what with finishing university, finding work and general lethargy! I dug out my paints and models the other day, sat down and did.... Absolutely nothing! I fully intend to get the Command Squad finished and make a start on the Storm Troopers. The trouble I have, aside from motivation issues, is that I can't remember exactly how to do the colours... I'm sure I'll get it again though.

Also in the pipeline is to do my Marbo conversion and make a Basilisk/Sturmgeschutz conversion...

I was overwhelmed with stuff to do at the weekend! I'm thinking I might do some painting this evening. I shall try and remember the process for the colours; as I recall it's pretty straight forward. I actually need to finish sculpting the carapace armour on the rest of my Storm Troopers, perhaps I'll do that instead?

Right, been doing some painting over the past couple of nights, namely some Storm Troopers. Now, I can't find my camera, the camera on my phone isn't up to the task AND the bulb on the lamp just exploded. All in all, not having the best evening!
Anyway, I've painted the Storm Troopers with the field-grey tunics and the dark green armour. To set them off slightly from the rest of the models, I've painted the trousers in a brown colour to mimic M44 peadot- haven't actually done the dots on it yet and I'm slightly apprehensive about doing so. Had a bit of a practice and it came out pretty pants.
So anyway, I have actually been doing something productive and haven't been sat on my arse doing nothing!

May have also made a start on a template for my StuG type tank which, I have decided, will have a detailed interior... Thinking about calling it an Argus Assault Gun; a play on the name of one of the Cyclops, Arges, to fit in with the theme of all Imperial Guard tanks being named after a mythical monster.

A StuG sounds awesome!!!
Can you pretty please add a panther, maybe soon, maybe later?

I'd like to pull it off, especially an interior- somewhat more adventurous than I have been in the past. I will be making the tracks and road/idler wheels myself too. The only thing I'll be using from a kit will be the pintle mounted Heavy Bolter MG style weapon I did before.

*Might* have started building my Argus Assault Gun tonight...

It is a little taller in dimensions than a real one is but it will look much "flatter" when the tracks get put on it (a process I am both looking forward to and dreading in equal measure).

Ok, progress has stalled somewhat this evening but normal service will be resumed at the weekend when I *should* have some free time.
Quick question for those in the know- what can be used as tired wheels? I have been thinking about making my own cogged drive wheels out of plasticard...

Small update:

Made a small start on filling in the gaps in the armour plates with some liquid green stuff (bit odd, still getting used to it even though it's been around for donkeys years now...).
Also made a start on the cannon- made the scale moar biggerer than a real StuG, what do you think? Keep it big or scale it down?

i think the cannon is a touch too big but thats just me. maybe make it half as long. unless this is just for shelf purposes that guy might try and say your modeling for an advantage. but it looks good so far \.

@Alabamaheretic; I never thought about the implications this would have on gaming- I'd best make it smaller! In all honesty I did think it was a little on the large side...

I need to order some bits to make the tracks now...

well it looks cool none the less but still sometimes big is not best. im sure if you chopped it by a third or so it would look better but im not that awesome at scratchbuilds. just my thought any way

I think you're right, real tanks have very small guns relative to the size of the chassis (unlike 40k tracks which are ridiculous).

Blog of Elnibbus - Random Rubbish @ 2013/07/09 14:37:06

Post by: alabamaheretic

very true but you also have to think these tanks are based off of WW I/WW II so the guns are not as nearly as big. it is still gonna look good when you get it done and i thought the stuG had a lot shorter barrel not too sure would have to use my google fu to find out.

yea the tracks are kinda big and silly but if you wanted historical accuracy you would be playing FoW not 40k lol any way i hope i provided some insight to your delimma

Yeh, the main gun on the StuG IV only just extended past the front of the chassis. Still have to figure out how I'm going do the interior...

Sweat beaded on Heinrich's brow as he sighted down the barrel of his lasrifle. Cadians had the Kantrael pattern with shoddy polymer furniture and ridiculously complicated combat sights. Heinrich on the other hand had a Mk.98- no fancy telescopic sights and no plastic. It was constructed of metal and wood, the way the Emperor intended. He squinted at the rear sight and adjusted his point of aim slightly.
To his left and right, his fellow Grenadiers did much the same, checking their weapons were ready to use.
His helmet felt heavy as did his webbing. In fact, he felt weary after several days of constant fighting in this now ruined agricultural market town. They were positioned on the outskirts of the town in buildings and ruins, overlooking several bridges which would have previously led out into verdant countryside, rolling hills and fields full of harvest crops. As it was, the enemy had seen fit to invade and now the fields burned or were churned to mud. Smoke drifted lazily over the river towards their positions. He absent-mindedly watched as it made its way passed them but was snatched from his reverie by movement across the bridge. Figures darted from cover to cover. It was at this point that the call went out to make ready and hundreds of rifles were brought to bear and aimed at the advancing soldiers.
"Good morning gentlemen!" Leutnant Haas came to join Heinrich and the rest of his section in the first storey of a mill located on the bridehead of the largest crossing point.
"Good morning Herr Leutnant!" Heinrich replied. "Was beginning to wonder when they would try it again."
"I hope they didn't disappoint Heinrich?" Haas grinned.
A high-pitched crack signalled a las-round as it hit the window sill at which Heinrich was sat and sent shards of plascrete and dust into the air. It was quickly followed by more until the air was thick with the stench of ozone and charred masonry. The few furtive figures had been joined by considerably more and were advancing steadily towards the river.
"Where the bloody hell is Mikel with my vox? MIKEL?! MIK..."
Mikel the vox operator appeared as if by magic at his lieutenant's side and offered the receiver to the officer.
"Emperor damn it man! I hate it when you do that... Give me the vox. South HQ this is Falcon, message over."
There was a brief crackle of static before the line responded.
"This is South HQ, go ahead Falcon."
"HQ, large enemy force approaching from south of river. ARTY Hi-Ex to be on stand-by, how copy? Over."
"Negative ARTY cover Falcon, tasking elsewhere. Additional units en-route to engagements east and north. Over."
"HQ. Understood. Falcon out."

"Bugger."

Ok, I've been thinking about my Heavy Bolters and whether or not I should use the actual models instead of my realistic representation of them (they do after all look like heavy stubbers).

What say you Dakkanaughts?

Having been away for a week or so I'm amazed at all the updates here! Your StuG concept is looking awesome, although i do agree with your conclusion that the gun could be marginally shorter it really isn't essential, looks very 40k scale as is! As for the liquid green stuff I know what you mena, seems like its been around for a while but i still cant quite master the damn stuff, its the fact that it shrinks when its dried.

As for the colours on the stormtroopers, the picture isnt showing up for me

As for the tracks....well, what can I say, you are truly INSANE sir! THey do look awesome when done though and I am very impressed with how they seem to flow, but still, insane amounts of work!!

Also I really liked that bit of fluff you included there, want to know what happens to the poor arty-less front liners now!

Keep it up! And may your sanity be preserved whilst doing those tracks.

Also i think the heavy stubber looking heavy bolters are absolutely perfect as they are, I could understand if there was the option to have a heavy stubber heavy weapons team, but at least as far as the normal codex is concerned you can't, I say stick with them, they look too good!

Well I've finished the Officer but will wait until tomorrow to take any pictures (I'll try and get some better quality ones that aren't as blurry).

I have a full Command HQ, Command section and an infantry squad to do all in the same scheme. I'm going to pick up a squad of Grenadiers too. The armour sections will be done in the same manner as the officer's helmet.

I'm still deliberating on what kind of army this is going to be. I've moved away from trying to make my own guard models from before as, quite frankly, they were a PITA. This is a modification on the Wehrmacht theme, more specifically an Ardennes Forest winter Death Korps army. There will be tanks (modified Chimeras I reckon, I've seen some really nice versions that I'd like to replicate, namely where they have moved the turret to the rear) and possibly a Messerschmidt Bf109 themed Thunderbolt. Also, a Macharius, because I love the look of that tank.

I must say that for the first time in a long while I'm actually looking forward to painting what will no doubt be a large number of infantry models and tanks! My trouble is that I still don't like Leman Russ MBTs...

I'm after opinions on tanks- I want to refine the idea of doing my own Leman Russ variants. I tried the Tiger look but it was vastly laborious for the pretty lack lustre result. I'm thinking about using the "set-back Chimera" idea, of which there are many tutorials and adapting my own turret configurations. Not only will it appease my dislike of the Russ model but it will also fit the aesthetic of the yet-to-be-purchased Macharius...

Thoughts?

Have you considered mounting the battle cannons on the hull in a similar fashion to the Stug III? It would probably fit in with your theme, especially if your going for a late war Wehrmacht style.

Oh very nice work, that commander looks great That stug suggestion sounds like a ogod idea to me, I can't remember where on these forums but I remember someone made and sells a stuff conversion kit for a 40k tank.

I'm sure someone else will know wich I mean and link it, if I don't find it first

* Edit *

Knew I would find it

I'm still going to do a set back Chimera like this in place of the Tiger:

Think I might try a panzer IV style turret for the set-back tanks.

Hold the phone, Forgeworld do a "modified Ryza" pattern turret with several different weapon options so I might just plonk those on the top. Sorted. I may also endeavour to make removable extra-armour panels for the track units.
Progress on the painting front is rather slow- I have the rest of the command HQ ready to go, minus the standard which will have a simpler pennant instead of the silly skull-box.

Its a shame you stopped doing the grenadiers, as I really like the look of them.

Did you consider Dreamforges, Eisenkern troopers for the WW1 & 2 style helmets, plus the upgrade packs for heads?

I think their aesthetic would have been right up your alley.
