It's so beautiful! I am also amazed that it reminds me of something else I have once again (besides Kamino and the FW kit). Now it looks like something out of Lost Planet 2. Somehow you have taken all my favorite sci-fi buildings and combined them to make the ultimate terrain!

You know what I thought when I say the airbrushing of the surgery shop (and the one on the blog)?
maybe there is a way for you guys to make the airbrushing masks for those details on the walls and floors available for us too.
Maybe as a download for those who have a cutting plotter, or, if you dont want the designes "out in the wild" just a sheet in the package when you order (for some extra pennies, of course) ?
Just a thought...

Post by: WarMill
Hmm, Ed suggested that as well. We made our masks by putting masking tape on styrene which is really time consuming, but maybe we could just use A4 adhesive labels and laser score those instead. I think some experimenting is required

Get out of my mind! The MDF one is there as a placeholder for an acrylic piece to be a big sign, there are also scribbles for some alternative roof toppers as well...
Now everything is in place for the roads, surgery shack, waste-ation and body booth this set is the new priority so hopefully it'll be along not too long after Salute.

The sky-level roads will all be up on the website this weekend, with a short pre-order period incentive. Hopefully painted pics will be up straight away, but there might be a slight delay while Ed finishes painting the glamour set
The corridors unfortunately are as cheap as they're going to get unless we got a much more powerful laser, the big sets especially take forever to make!

Well we've been pretty slow on the releases since the MOD.CO.N sets at the start of the year, but we've been saving up the releases ready for Salute next Saturday . These new products are done and dusted, and will be available on the webstore over the next few weeks, starting with the SkyLevel ELMOR upgrade which will be open for pre-order this Monday 16th with a nice pre-order incentive, which will be shipped on Friday 26th (to give us a chance to get over Salute ), followed by the other products over May, but we'll have a small number of them available to pick up early at Salute, stand TA12!

Surgery Shack: £45
Salute price £40
The Surgery Shack covers an area of 12x8" and includes engraved acrylic detail parts, a scanning bed, a medical computer, a reception desk and even a sink!
The prices for the other bits vary but I''ll hold off on revealing those as Ed has just done all the price graphics for Salute and I don't want to get them wrong!

The Surgery Shack is a lovely building with lots of interior detail that's plenty big enough to run your mens around in, the Waste-Ation is a perfect piece of terrain to add context to an urban board and can provide different tactical options depending on ow you use the removeable bins, and the SatLink is the perfect objective for any game.

Yeah just ask Ed how much superglue he'd used by the end of it On a serious note, we're trying to branch out a bit; after 2 years of looking at 3mm MDF and increasing demands on our time from other sources we need to play with other stuff to keep the enthusiasm going, and card is such a lovely material to work with. I'm working on recreating a T1 engy from sup com just as a fun project, but maybe something similar will find it's way onto our website.
A couple of our customers have written reviews of our products, so go check them out!

That's all really nice to hear. I'm glad your looking to freshen things up and that you've woken up a bit again.
I wouldn't think so highly of myself but I did wonder if my comment on your absence from Dakka played any part in you posting more updates again? I was very pleasantly surprised when you replied in whatever random thread that was and I really did mean what I said although I might have put it better. Your early presence on Dakka was quite large and that was a big plus for me and I think many others. I think your products stand wonderfully on their own merit, and impressively in such a crowded market, but your edge for me was community interaction. The more interaction the better I feel. I really do hope we continue to see you around here and that you find some new ventures that rekindle the fire for you both.
I almost feel a little silly saying this since I've yet to place that long promised order with you. Sadly I'm yet to find myself in a comfortably funded position in all this time so I have to live much of my hobbying vicariously. I hope that doesn't nullify my opinion too much. Purchases aside I've also long wanted to take some time to put some of my ideas down in CAD and send them to you for your appraisal. Although I have the time I again don't have the funds to run a CAD program to realise that idea. Anywho, point being, I'm a big fan of you guys and I'm wishing you all the best as I follow you. I'm just sorry I can't put any green in your pockets right now.
41690
Post by: WarMill
No real mystery as to why our community presence dropped off, Ed works in education so his spare time is heavily dependant on term times and other school demands, and for various reasons he didn't have much time or energy left for it. I'd been spending a lot of time helping my partner establish her business, which I had to prioritise over the toys whilst trying to keep Warmill going, coupled with a pretty gruelling show schedule over Spring and Summer (including an epic drive to RPC in Germany) which didn't leave us any time for releasing new products and you have a recipe for burnout! Things are gradually getting back to normal, and looking at things we can make that are a bit more fun is getting some of the enthusiasm back.
As far as wanting to draft your ideas in CAD form, check out www.blender.org, it's open source and free.
43045
Post by: Casey's Law
Well it's nice to have you back! I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with. What happened to the game you were working towards?

We're very pleased to announce that our products are now stocked by Warlord Games as the perfect accompaniment to the Judge Dredd minis game.
As someone who grew up with 2000AD, I'm especially psyched about it!
In other news, tomorrow we'll be doing a photoshoot to get our newest products ready for release. Do you have a US distributor? I have four of the utility pods, they're great. I'd love to acquire one or two of the full roadway sets as well.
Congrats on the partnership, I agree it's a good fit.
Now you need to design a knee pad kiosk for my gangers to spug around.
41690
Post by: WarMill
Unfortunately the costs involved with shipping large quantities of wood to the US mean it would probably be cheaper to actually move over there! We've heard some real horror stories from some of our friends in the industry.
We've got a new street booth coming, it's similar to the foodbooth but slightly more refined, in the same way the MULE is the second wave of housing from the PUP.
5269
Post by: lord_blackfang
This has been mentioned in other MDF threads, but nothing has come from it so far: surely the way to distribute MDF products overseas is not to physically ship them but to license the designs to other MDF companies? You could do an exchange of sorts. Warmill for UK, GameCraft for US, and CNC Workshop for OZ, for example. Just pool your designs and work out a system to split revenue.
41690
Post by: WarMill
Mmm it's something we've thought about in the past, but I guess there's more to it than just getting someone to cut the stuff. We sell everything as a packaged product with boxes, boxart, printed instructions and what have you, so anyone who we licenced to would have to keep a supply of that stuff on hand as well. Another issue is finding suppliers of everything that goes in to the products, but I guess the main thing is just how the money would be split, and I think the upshot would be the average price of stuff would have to go up a bit. If someone's using a 5 grand hobby laser their hourly rate will be considerably less than someone using a 20 grand professional laser and their products would be priced accordingly, which just wouldn't leave any margin for the other manufacturer.
Today saw a 4 hour photoshoot of new products, here's a little glimpse of the raw MULE images before we spend the next 2 days editing and making graphics.

Necros wrote:Any plans to ever do these buildings like half sized for 15mm scale stuff?
To be honest, probably not. We did think about it way back, and even made a fortress in 1.5mm card which worked really well, but most of our kits would be a bit too fiddly at that scale even if we spent the time altering them to use 2mm wood. If we played 15mm ourselves we'd probably be more inclined to do it, but we were raised on 28.
Here's a couple more shots of the upcoming MULE set showing the walkway ring that comes with the hab modules and how it interacts with the core. The hab has a 3/4 walkway ring with enclosed fences, while the core comes with triangular corner pieces. When the hab is attached to the core, the core pieces complete the walkway ring but can also be used with the closing fences intact, so you can modify how free models are to walk around the buildings.
Hab with walkway ring enclosed
2 habs on core with open walkway ring.
Elevated facility made of 4 cores, 3 habs, helipad, tunnel, roof topper and external lifts. The helipad and one of the habs are suspended above the tabletop.

Such. Bad. Timing. I just blew about $200au on Infinity terrain for my birthday, and you guys were inconveniently not accepting orders even then :( Well, I'm looking at doing a second urban sprawl type table, and the buildings I have right now make better office blocks, so one or two of these bad boys should still be good for that table.
62565
Post by: Haighus
With the MULE system, can the core units attach directly to other core units, or is a tunnel unit required?
On a different note, some interior detailing kits for the hab units would be awesome and pretty useful- sort of like a "home" pack with bed(s), kitchen unit and maybe a sofa type thing; maybe also a "lab" pack with dissection/experiment tables, storage tanks and computer(s), and anything else you can think up tbh, if you want to make and sell it I guess. Those were just the two things mentioned in the product descriptions I've read so far. They can just be scatter terrain that is intended to be placed in the hab (although could still set up some cool little dioramas with it- some gangers in an alley-way sitting on an old sofa next to some waste bins comes to mind). Atm they look a bit empty, which means you can model what you want in them, but it would make it easier for people who wanted it to look like an actual home, and either don't have the skills or time to make furniture effectively. Also something that sci-fi terrain lacks in general, which is why I am particularly impressed by the surgery shack and foodbooth (and now office unit).
Great work though, love the MULE stuff!

Post by: WarMill
Ah the good old interior detail question...
It's probably not going to be something we'll do for the generic habs and stuff, the cores come with a removeable lift and as you've seen, the office has removeable cubicles but the interior stuff will generally be done for single buildings like the foodbooth and surgery shack. We have a new street booth in the works which does include beer taps and a coffee machine though, so that may be more to your taste!
We'll shortly be getting a Solidscape 3D printer (sooper-dooper high-res), so once we have that we may print out some of the parts we designed for resin way back and look at getting them out, but we may just get excited and do all sorts of new stuff .

More seriously, the resin stuff sounds cool, new or old! As for interiors for hab blocks, thats ok, I didn't really want to start working on some stuff to go inside if you were going to bring out a probably far superior piece in a couple months!

Btw, I've been reading your blog, and I was wondering when the skips and the stacked boxes (which look cool but I have no idea what they actually are) will be added to the webstore? It says they will be released at Crisis, which was last weekend. I'm intending to create a spaceport theme for my gaming terrain, and the skips look great for that (alongside SIR containers oc )

3d printer you say? just down the road from me you say? :raises eyebrow:

I was going to put them up as soon as we got back from Crisis, but right now there's such a backlog there's not much point adding more to the mix. Warfare is next weekend so we'll put them on there straight after.

Yeah it's gonna be awesome It'll do 6 micron print layers, but having seen some minis printed on it going that fine isn't even necessary unless you're printing off a horde of tiny robots to roam across your desk

If you need a Solidworks Designer, I'd love some extra work. Which version Solidworks are you using? Looks like you're using Photoworks instead of Photoview? Looks good though. I'd probably bevel the area around the grip. It'd be more ergononic.

Weird timing- had just gone onto your website to look around and saw this up on the website, and was just thinking you haven't posted on Dakka for awhile, and what do I find when I check back?
Cool looking kit
Btw, on another note, when can we expect to see the security wall sets back? Most of them have disappeared from the webstore (along with the surgery shack). I vaguely remember something about you reordering the kits or something?

Yeah the last few months have been a bit hectic, hence the lack of updates. The Surgery Shack just needs the photos updating, which I'll get done today. We discontinued the Security Compound in its present form because the resin moulds were toast and to be honest they weren't selling enough to justify new ones. We are planning a redesign along with some new bits to go with it, but we also have the rooms for the MOD.CO.N to release along with a new range Ed's been working on so it may not be for a while.
@Necros we don't have any plan for MDF terrain in 15mm just yet, but we have been feeling the lure of tiny mechs and tanks and now we have a couple of printers it seems daft not to indulge ourselves. Still very WIP, but here's one thing that's in the works...

I'm totally putting a Morebucks on my want list. That's awesome.
I ordered from Warmill at the beginning of the year (a number of items, including a FoodBooth, Wastestation and a BioVending), and have been really pleased with what I got. The kits are a bit smaller than some of the other MDF kits, but the details are exquisite, and the construction was well documented and went together very smoothly. I'm really happy with them as additions to my terrain collection.

The little street cleaner robot on your blog looks pretty cool tbh Any chance of seeing some more stuff about it?
Also like the idea of a bigger service vehicle that houses the little robot, something like the Olifant vehicles in Halo?

Man you guys make the best flavour buildings. City tables with habitation blocks, warehouses and stuff are good, but those little touches like fast food places with neon signs really finish a table. I really need to do an order with you guys, When you say the neon pink signs were airbrushed - how was it done, just airbrushing an ink on the sign?

OMG someone actually looks at the blog! Well it's still a WIP but the intention is for the waste bin at the back to be removeable, and for there to be a large mothership lorry with little bays for emptying the small bins into. You would get the mothership (which will likely be an MDF and card kit) along with 4 of the little robots which would be autonomous. They're big enough to hide a couple of 25mm bases behind in partial cover, just something to add to urban boards besides more crates.

I'll check with Ed for the specific brand of paint but yep that's it exactly, just airbrushed in a gradient on the back surface of the acrylic.

Ok, the whole concept for the street cleaners sounds good- it really adds character to a board if you have little things like that to make the place look like it was actually lived in. Definitely something I would buy.
Any idea on roughly how large the mothership is likely to be at this stage? The robots sound like they are a good size.

So, with some hobby money coming in I decided to check your site out again, and once again it's down Someone doesn't want me to have some awesome Warmill terrain.
Out of curiosity, who is the Australian distributor? If it is Modfx/The Combat Company, colour me excited. They get most of my hobby money now already.

Hi everybody, we're back!... Well, sort of. We've been away so long that the backend for our webstore has changed, which scuppered the plan to have a shiney new header revealing the new stuff we've been working on until we get to grips with it.
We've been away for a while, due to a veritable perfect storm of partners, illnesses, frantic people desperately needing work done, etc etc which meant we couldn't man the Warmill trenches, but we are gearing back up and will be thoroughly back in the game this week. Behind the scenes, the big development is moving into international distribution; our first Australian distributor order will be going out this week to a new company Make my Model so keep an eye out for Warmill terrain in a store near you.
We've also been working on a new range, because what's the point in coming back if we have nothing to come back with? This range will be a complete research / resource exploitation outpost featuring the return of the Security Compound in its new and improved form. Ed's currently painting up a few prototypes to get some pictures out there so keep an eye on the thread for further updates over the next week.
Cheers all
Harry and Ed

Give warmill time to get their act together. For a model company to produce quality scenery for the expanding wargame scenery market, they need time to test out the buildings.
If they find something wrong now,not after the release, then the better chance of having a best seller!

The new and improved Security Compound is nearly ready to go on sale, so as we're in a defend-y mood we're offering 15% off selected defensive structures until the end of the month! No-one's saying you have to buy a 10-pack of QDBs and some Dragon's Teeth, but don't come crying to us when your fortress is in tatters and barbarians are rearranging your cutlery drawers and hanging the toilet paper the wrong way round.

Hopefully you'll like this new one, the overall look is much more industrial and heavy, and will stand up to the rigours of the table much better. Our particular favourite is the new blockhouse which can be either an enclosed pillbox or a more open double height tower. You can see them in their tower form in this battle pic.

Hah yeah, if you have the equipment there really isn't any need to use kickstarter. We are considering a very small kickstarter for our resin mechs (just enough to fund one production run) because it's new territory for us and we're not sure what the demand will be, but I couldn't see us ever doing one for lasercut stuff.

I'm thrilled about that.. I backed Burn In Designs KS like a chump and still haven't seen my stuff.. meanwhile they've had a few batches of new releases while not even fulfilling the KS pledges. UGH.
The thing I like and appreciate about the aesthetic you guys are doing is that it breaks away from just modern or just grimdark or whatever.. and goes more towards sci-fi video games or anime. I'm enjoying that type of setting for my TT gaming more and more. Several people have mentioned Mass Effect but I get a bit of a Killzone vibe too. ... which reminds me.. I have an army to finish
I can't wait for the mechs. If you go KS with them it'll be a bummer since I assume it will add even more lead time to their release schedule but if it means you guys are able to feel out the territory and expand into that arena, I would be happy. Working in resin opens up more than just that stuff.. it makes the range of scatter you guys can cover a bit broader. I think laser cut goes a long way but for more complex shapes it just starts to feel like ..well.. laser cut. It's part of the reason I pulled out of backing that heroic modern laser cut kickstarter.
Anyway, I don't own any of your products yet but I'm hoping to free up some $$ to rectify that. I really enjoy the look you've achieved and can't wait until I can throw some of that down on my gaming table.

Unfortunately because we missed last year due to returning the forms too late we had to go on the reserve list this year, but if at all possible we will be there next year. As we'll be releasing the new stuff shortly we'll probably do a 'not going to Salute' sale instead.
Barzam wrote:What ever happened to your guys' plans to release a 28mm sci-fi tank and infantry?

Thanks for reminding us about it! It would make a good complimentary release to the mechs.

Yeah we're of the same opinion, laser cut is at its best when it's doing large expansive buildings that would be cost prohibitive in resin, but for small scatter stuff you end up with a 20-part kit trying to capture the detail of a single piece resin model and frankly we'd rather use resin in those instances.
As far as a kickstarter goes, we will be producing the 3D printed masters and all the CAD data is already done so literally all it would be funding is the cost of a set of moulds and one production run so the lead time should be as long as it takes the caster to produce them. If we do do a kickstarter it wouldn't be until the models are ready to be handed over and made.

Well after a whole lot of photo editing, calculating bundles, writing product listings, drinking tea and dreaming about the day I'll be able to actually play on this stuff, our new C.A.S.Hstak City Block terrain range is available for pre-order!
You can check out lots of lovely pictures on our webstore or check out nice big pictures on our facebook page
But wait, there's more! Since we're not going to be trading at Salute this year (my bad for returning the forms late :(), we're having a sale on ALL our urban terrain!
With savings of at least 10% on everything, and all the C.A.S.Hstak range at 15% discount during the pre-order period it's never been easier to fill a table with Warmill terrain. If your local game store or club plays Infinity this is a great opportunity to band together and fill that terrain collection.

caylentor wrote:What would you recommend to cover a 6x4' table?
A Mega Mansion pretty much covers you for all the accessories you'd ever need and fills a 4x4, so I'd say one of those for £176.79 then either a Hi_Stack to have plenty of staircases or a Block Estate to max out on buildings, both are £84.99 in the sale so for £260 you're going to have a huge amount of terrain that will cover a 6x4 with plenty of flexibility.

Ok when's tax season end? If it means more people can have awesome cities then we can extend it a bit.
Veteran Sergeant wrote:Very cool. What's the shipping look like to the States?
Heavily subsidised, and we use couriers for all orders over 2kg so you are getting a good deal. I've just re-jigged the postage bands so that for orders over 3kg (which is around £200) worldwide courier shipping is free. FREE I say!

As posted on our facebook page, shipping of our new C.A.S.Hstak range was held up by the Easter holidays (my bad for completely forgetting about it!), fortunately that's all sorted now and we're pleased to report that shipping of orders has begun properly .
Don't forget our mega sale is on for another 2 weeks so there's still a chance to get a whole load of Warmill terrain at up to 20% off, and free worldwide shipping at 3kg which is surprisingly easy to achieve!

Post by: WarMill
From our facebook page:
Time for an update on shipping! Due to the large number of big orders we've received we are running at approximately a 4 week lead time from date of order to dispatch, we currently have 21 open orders to fill and we expect to send out 2 today, both Mega Mansions.
We are finding the Mega Mansions to be the biggest delaying factor; because they include every part of the C.A.S.Hstak range we have to do a lot of cutting to get enough parts together so they tend to be ready in batches. Right now we have a block of 4 orders containing Mega Mansions, once they're completed the next few orders should go quite quickly until we get to the next Mega Mansion.
Thank you all for your patience, if you'd like an update on when your particular order is likely to ship feel free to contact us at admin@warmill.co.uk and we'll help as much as we can.
We're now in the last week of the Mega Sale, don't forget it will be ending on April 25th!

Well after a long period where order fulfillment times were way too long (4 weeks or more urgh!), we're pleased to say that all current orders will be packed up and shipped out by the end of the weekend.
As an apology and a thank you for those customers who've been waiting patiently we'll be sending out discount codes on Monday and will be starting some new promotions, as it didn't seem right to start new offers when people were still waiting for orders from the last promotion!
Thanks again for everyones' patience during this time.
