That wolf work looks impressive. Like the way it's shaping up.
On resins, I buy bulk these days and go for a simple 50/50 mix with a reasonable(15 min) set time. Really happy with what I get, but your best bet is talk to DrH or OneManNoodle their resin work is outstanding.

Thanks guys. Work's been kicking my tail this week, but I've managed to get 6 cyberwolves going. They're all in various stages of prosthetic fittings at the moment, but I'm making progress. I haven't been taking pictures, however, so I'll try to rectify that next week.
Thanks for checking in. I'll definitely hit up anyone who has advice about casting as I'm doing a fair amount of that these days.

So what style is the favorite?
MkI
MkII
MkIII

MkIII is still not done enough to decide...
so i settle with MkI... that looks better...MkII has the fur in the lower leg sections in a funny way... not convincing...also the prosthetics are not enough for my own taste...
currently i like the first version the best...tho...it might be based on the posings of all... not that this is all to helpful for you

The MkII is supposed to be exposed cables. I thought about it after the fact that I should have just used real wire instead, but that's the one I'm least happy with. I did some work on the MkIII last night so I'll try to show more tomorrow.

I like Mk I best out of those particular pictures.
Mk II looks a bit too much like all the skin has been removed and we're looking at the exposed muscles. Painting would help with that impression, but also consider a combination with Mk I; leaving some exposed endoskeleton with the cables draping/wrapped around like muscles are over a skeleton.
Mk III looks more like it would fit in the Infinity universe, rather than 40k; curved, sleek armour instead of square-edged bionics.
Although it does look the most like a prosthetic out of the 3 options...

Here is the finished MkIII Cyberwolf - well, almost finished. I have to add the Pauldrons, but otherwise, the prosthetic work is done I think.
I like the sleek look (I was using some artwork of the old school Ravage for reference), but I see what you mean about it being more Infinity than Space Marine. I'm going with, "I play Eldar" as my excuse.
I also got further on my Whirlwind turrets:
So next week I'm going to hit the Dreadnought droppod, Stormwolf, and these turrets hard with the rivet gun. I hope to have them done and all the Imperial stuff on my shelf (that's started at least) ready for delivery. Here's to staying on target!

Perfectly valid excuse, and if you like it that's all that matters.
Look good though.
What's concerning though, is what are these wolves getting into that leaves them all legless...

A thought occurred to me regarding the cyberwolves: should they be more armored? Most of them will have a chest plate type thing along with their pauldrons, but should they have a bit more over their ribs/back?

Post by: LeCacty
Just pauldrons. Your entire army should either be nude guys with pauldrons or floating pauldrons. If not, you are 40king wrong.

I wouldn't get too carried away with covering them with armour. I can't see animals being as appreciative of armour (comfort Vs staying alive) as more sentient beings.
But see how it goes and let them reach a level of metal naturally (that is; stop when it starts to look too much).

My buddy, who plays SWs and all these guys are for, doesn't really like the idea of a lot of plating either. He likes the MkI best, but I'm going to do more MkIIIs and alter the MkII so it's got some plating. So it looks like I'm almost done with the cyberwolves.

So a busy night last night.
I got a bit of riveting and plating done on the EXT of the Dread-pod, as well as finishing riveting the INT. I've got to finish the gun turret inside the pod, but then I'm done with the inside. On the EXT, I have to finish patching cut lines and then rivet the other 2 petals. After that I'll finish the base. Then I'm done!
I also did some work on the Whirlwind turrets, getting the cable bits finished and starting on the mounts. I have a bit of patching to do and some detailing, but they're wraping up as well.
And whlie I was at it, I mocked up a combi-flamer for my SW buddy and kombi-skorcha for my meganobs. I guess the combi-flamer is probably too big.
Tonight I'll mold the kombi-skorcha and continue riveting the pod. I'll also finish the last couple of Cyberwolves and continue on the mounts for the turrets. I'm hoping to finish with the IMP stuff this week so I can go full back to Orks next week.

Rivet scale is a tricky subject.
If you are going for realism, then at these scales they shouldn't really be visible. A 5mm rivet (for example) would be ~5/56 = 0.09mm on the model.
After that it's just a matter of representing the presence of rivets, making it "look" right, and just that coolness of the finished product.
All of that is personal preference.
Personally, I prefer to use smaller rivets on my model. But what I've used ranges from 0,5 to 1.2mm. I don't think that I would consider using anything smaller than that just for what little extra realism it might bring. Can't think how hard it would be to pick up something 1/5th the size of a 0.5mm rivet...
Drop pod looks great.

Post by: mars2024
How do you make 0,5 rivets?
62749
Post by: Dr H
Chop them from the end of a 0.5mm plastic rod.
It's one of "those" jobs...
Although... *quick rummage is past posts*
Dr H wrote:In addition to chopping polystyrene rods (effective, you can choose the size you want, a little tedious)
and using water-filter beads and drilling pits for them (effective, very tedious and sometimes hit and miss, expensive if you don't actually use the filters)
You do also get some nice scale gravel too... with more effort...
You can also use small drops of glue ( CA or PVA), applied with a small point like a cocktail stick.
I have also used left over milliput ( GS would also work), that I've rolled into a thin sausage and left to almost fully set (otherwise you'll squash the rivets), then cut into rivets. This also lets you choose the size of your rivets and uses up that bit of putty that you always have left over.
I've also seen a tutorial of using an automatic pencil to press recessed rivets (little rings) into putty (for when you are sculpting). You could lay down a thin strip of putty and then do this for a change.
I think that's all the methods I've seen...

I was thinking about fishing line. 100lb test is often around 1mm thick. I was almost going to buy it, but then I found a 1mm punch tool. I think I'm going to cut off the 2mm rivits and then I'll give that a try (once it comes to me from Hong Kong in a month or two )
In the meantime, I did a bit of painting last night.
And got a group shot of these gitz! 10 so far, but another 5 waiting a couple of bits and 2 Nobs.
I'm hoping my buddy will paint these (he's more of a painter than builder - and he's an absolutely fantastic painter)

Your greenstuff and plasticard skillz are awesome, how do you go about planning a scratchbuild? You seem to get very accurate replicas of vehicles e.g. your drop pod
58000
Post by: mars2024
@John: Most of what I build is based on plans from the internet. Most of the plans are scaled correctly, but when I free-build it's sometimes too big (my trukks for example); my Dakkajets are skinny, but roughly the same size as a GW Dakkajet. I draw some of the plans myself, but most are from papermodeling sites like ( http://vk.com/album-28784290_147338158) and ( http://www.papercraftsquare.com/topics/warhammer-40k-free-paper-models-collection-topic) and ( http://zealot.com/threads/armormans-warhammer-40k-models-thread.170912/). The Stormwolf was a combination of a Ceatus (which I had papercraft plans for and the GW design, which I had pictures of). I just use plasticcard instead of paper.

Yeah, I've tried to get the signshop that I get plastic from to throw sheets on their flatbed, but that's not free. I've also tried to get them to CNC it for me, but... that's even worse. I could print onto sticky paper, I suppose, but that's not really good either.
It works out ok, as is, I guess.

So I've got to get going again (trying to have all my Space Wolf stuff done by Thanksgiving)! I've taken the last couple of weeks to play some games 40k and computer. I did some work last night and I think I'm ready to get back into it. First off, I wasn't really happy with how steampunky the Dreadnought Droppod I was working on was turning out. So I cut off all the rivets on the outside of the door and have been trying to figure out how to get them smaller. I got a 1mm punch, but that's not working (I can't get them out very easily), and then I thought I'd just cut bits of wire, but I'm not sure about that either. Then I just thought I'd drill out some divits to make room for the wire, but maybe I'll leave it as is. Anyway, here's what they look like at the moment:
So this is progress on my objective to finish the SW stuff. However, the current LoER (League of Extraordinary Riveters) contest has me looking at an idea I had a while ago. I have a couple of 12" wooden manikins. I was thinking that I could pose it, lock the pose in with some greenstuff or something, and sculpt armor out of sculpy. So here's kind of what I'm thinking for the pose and composition:
The manikin I'm using looks like this (all painted up from a stop-motion animated thing I did back in school):
Finally, I got distracted with another project I've been wanting to do (of course). This one is for X-Wing again and is a huge ship for the Scum faction (or Rebels as a Med Transport proxy). I only started it last night so I'm not too far, but I feel like I made decent progress.
Here's what I used to get started:
And here's where I am with the build:
So Progress?

Nice job on the ship's shapes (ship-shape, geddit?)
Good idea on using the wooden person-thing.
Something you could do with the rivet holes is pop a little ball of GS into the hole. Not to fill it, but to look like a recessed rivet. Could also do the same with cut-rod rivets. Say, about 50% smaller than the hole diameter.

I tired some wire (pretty close to 1mm) to see if that would work. It's tough to get them lined up the right way, but I think they'll look ok. It's pretty tedious as well. It will make getting all the Space Wolf stuff done a little slower.
Here are some (not great) shots of the doors with the wire:

Yeah, fitting a dot in a circle can really show up if it's not central.
Difficult to tell how well you've done from those photos though.
If you are still experimenting, try having the rivet flush to the surface (so you are only left with a recessed ring), that can look nice... but doesn't help with the ease of placing them

Sorry late to the party as usual...
Not sure if its too late, but..
I did this with a Nail punch heated up and pressed into the surface and then trim off the excess with a scalpel. I have since perfected it by altering a soldering iron, making a divet in the tip, this way I can literally do hundreds of rivets in minutes.
Maybe cover your existing holes with a thin plate and put a recessed rivet in as per my method.
Or fill the holes with greenstuff and while its still "wet" press a nail punch into it, give the same effect but without the heat.
All looking amazing by the way, love it. Wolfy stuff is looking great, always had a soft spot for them, one day maybe.

I'll definitely try that Cam! I'll have to fill a few holes first though and figure out how to clear my 1mm punch - I think that one would work best.
I have another problem, however. I went to a Star Wars event at a nearby Children's Museum with my kids a few weeks ago. My oldest daughter has a decent Aayla Secura costume that a friend helped me with, and my son went as an ewok (we did a little hood to match with a bear costume we had in the basement. My middle daughter went as Leia with a store-bought costume and was a little disappointed that I hadn't helped her do a more involved costume. We talked about it and, while she's not as big of a Star Wars fan as her sister, she likes Sabine from SW Rebels. Soooo, I decided to figure out a way to get her something that we could work into a costume. I looked at Boba Fett helmets on Ebay and then I remembered all the papercraft and pepakura sites I use for 40k. After a little looking I found the patterns for Bo Katan and... well, here you go:
I got it put together last night (from printed sheet to this, mind you. I was super excited). Today, I'm going to talk with some guys I work with to see if I can hole up in a corner of their workshop and get to the resin step, hopefully tonight. I expect things to slow down with the resin and bondo, but I'm hoping to have it ready for paint in 3 weeks. This is the first time I've done anything pepakura so I really have no idea if that's reasonable or not - especially given my record of distraction. At the moment though, I feel like a person possessed. I certainly don't want to be here at work, chained to my desk.

Good Call Cam! I think that's a great solution. I haven't filled and patched the Droppod yet, but I wanted to see how it looked so I did some of the Whirlwind turrets and the Stormwolf (which I had realized that I hadn't shown any progress on for a while). Very pleased.
Here's the Whirlwind. I've got a good idea (I think) to finish them off as well, but I'll need to cast bits for that. Next week.
Stormwolf
I also got fiberglass done on the helmet, but I've got to cut and trim a little. It doesn't really look much different than what I've already posted, but it's pretty hard and sturdy enough (I think). I'll maybe start bondo-ing in the morning and post pics again once that process is underway.
Wahoo!
