Dude, after your ruined my Easter way back when (See page like3 or some gak, i dont know), i have decided to take a Pre-Heresy (Oh Horusy, as its more simply called) World Eaters army, and i intend to quite shamelessly rip off all of your genius ideas.
But one eludes me, your paint scheme for the whiteish armour on the WE. I have seen WIP shots with it brown to start, or maybe white then washed? Whats the dealio, if possible to divulge your secrets?
Fulgrim looks so good, id bum him (he clearly takes right?).
Mako_Boy: LOL, No its vallejo model air(VMA) burnt umber as a base coat.
Then models are strayed with chipping fluid.
Then airbrushed VMA sand followed by a highlight of VMA white.
Then i make the models wet and start carefully chip them with a small drybrush.
Hope it helps!
Good news! My work will be shown in the November edition of the White Dwarf!
Then on to some commission work:
Both of the clients that bought my Emperors children ordered some reinforcements!
Here are the pictures of the finished work:
Hey buddy.. Everything is looking great. Love the Titan WIP! That's gonna be a beast. I'm a big fan of your EC..Fulgrim came out great. With the release of Ferrus Manus coming up I think the diorama of them both is fab. I quite fancy an allied detachment of EC to accompany my SoH... Keep up the great work!
A lot of people asked me on how i make my storm shields.
And i have made a little video tutorial on how do these for warhammer 40k.
You can find the video on my youtube channel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ir-nO2TiiLU
I have finished painting the titan!
Today i'm going to get the base i ordered for this beast and print its kill banner and then hes ready to be shipped to the customer!
I'm the client! So, so happy with this. I've wanted this model for a long time, the Forge World titan has been my desktop background for years, so when I got a small inheritance I went for it. It's what my Grandma would have wanted [probably!]
I have to say that Peter has been brilliant over the whole commission process [despite my pickyness] and I would recommend him without hesitation to anyone who's thinking of getting something commission painted. After I saw his PH Emperor's Children and World Eaters titan there was no-one else I wanted painting mine up.
His rates are very reasonable and other people I contacted were charging a lot more for a finish nowhere near as detailed. Get in there before he starts charging more!
A true artist, and just as good, if not better, than any commission painter on Dakka.
Thanks again. Can't wait to get it now!
Edit - oh, forgot to say, I've already named him - Magnum Bastardus!
Great stuff scar! I'm working on a pre heresy EC army as well, and this will be of great help to me.
How do you do those paint chippings in the armour? (on the EC). Is it 'just' black spots highlighted with the same purple shade as the other highlights? Could you please explain how you do those?
Koenbeest: Yes you nailed it spot on Black chipp's and highlighted with the purple/pink were i did the other highlights with!
Oh and im curious! Have any pictures of the work so far?

Thanks for the confirmation!
Right now I'm working on a drop pod palantine blade squad, (just need to finish they eyes and I'm thinking on adding a sharper highlight like you did on yours).
Ignore the other models on the photo's, its just the best photo I had of the EC models.
The drop pod project is epicly failing atm, think I will need to get my airbursh out of the closet (been avoiding it on my previous projects, but I just cant get a nice shading/highlighting effect on large flat surfaces of purple, without the airbursh).
Right now the gold and metal on the EC is 'nmm' but I'm thinking on stealing your entire scheme (going for your gold recipe and putting them on snow bases to follow the istavan fluff).
Lol Tips? You dont need tips! Great looking stuff m8! Really nice!
As for my gold i did not went with NMM and for the snow, its not fluff correct Istvaan did not snow if im not mistaken I just added the snow for the contrast.

What kind of tips are you looking for?
Thank you!
What I would like to know, is how you proceed with for instance an infantry model. Do you go from black basecoat to airbrushing the 3 shades of purple (liche+black, liche, liche+white)? Are there more shades involed? Do you go on with the brush after you have done the purple with the airbrush (apart form OSL), or do you do more with the airbrush?
I'm wondering the same about the vehicles.. is it 'just' the 3 shades of purple airbrushed, and brush detailing/highlighting from there?
I'm asking because I really like the way the purple on your vehicles is done. I'm not as well trained with the airbrush as I used to, so I'm wondering if I could get even close to matching your results (if it is 'just' the purple airburshed), or if there is much more airbrushing involed that I dont realise.
If you could maybe give a very short and basic overview of how you go form A to Z on those EC? Something like this:
1. black blasecoat
2. aibrush liche+black
3. highlight airbursh liche
4. highlight airbrush liche+white
5. Edge highlight liche +white
etc.
Just so I mainly know how many airbrusing is done, and how many shades are used
Well you all got it right there!
What i did notice is that the mix sometimes is off depending what white you use.
I have used VMA white and Citadel ceramite white and they are both white but the mix end's up different.
1 goes more to pink and other goes more to lila purple.
Also i mixed 1 big pot for the whole army and prayed everything with it i still have some left since i need to commission more models for the army.
When i did the edge highlight i did use 2 highlights, 1 with the last mix i used to airbrush the highlights and after that i used a pure white with some water in there.
What happens with liche purple is that it is so aggressive that the white you put on it turns into purple.
And maybe that is the effect you are missing.
Also the more dark colors you have the stronger the highlight get for the eye so you want to try and have as much contrast as possible.
Here on this page i did a little tut on the purple: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/487760.page Dont know if you have seen it already if not that might help you.
And please take a look at the Zenithal lightning video that one is very important.
Hope that helps you out!
If not i'm going to give another airbrush workshop in now and 2 months if you come to that i can show you it in the flesh!
For more information about that please keep an eye out on my facebook page.
Awesome! I particularly like the Drop Pod and Champion. Everyone looks like they are just on the verge of turning to Chaos, must be the colour of the armour that does it. Great stuff.
Those latest shots really bring your skills out Scar! the dirty whites and poses have made for a squad that tells a story of brutality just looking at them, really great models mate that's a force i wouldn't want after me!

Thank you for that,
Here is my version of the EC drop pods (made 2), I used my shades of purple, but other than that, all credits go out to you. I fully admit I copied your entire technique.
This is the last photo I will post in your thread btw, I just wanted to thank you and make sure I gave you credit for my current en future EC army here.
Tips are welcome as always!
That all looks mad as dude! really cool and if i may risk sounding corny (or GW-y) it's a great cinematic image for us to aspire our skills too! well deserved compliments again for you Scar! :-)
Unfortunately the diorama did not place but i did win a bronze medal with my Fulgrim!
It was a great day at Scale Model Challenge.
Met the guys from Massive voodoo and some other big name artists.
So it was a very successful day for me!
Sorry lol...
So...
How did they make the article ??
Haha no problem m8 Its about the FANG'S Armies on Parade from this year which i won Did talk to Dan from the WD a bit don't know if he added something, well see.
Congrats on the WD feature, got my copy today Just been through this whole blog and I have to say every single page is an inspiration. Consider yourself Exalted!
Unfortunately i did not win best army on show but i did get a nomination!
And that was my goal!
Just got my fire raptor build and ready top paint, but now i have a dilemma!
My next legion is going to be Iron Hands, Shall i paint this beast for them? Or paint him for my World Eaters?
Very good work on the Phantom.
The clean and effective airbrush work brings it really to life, the pilot alone is a piece of art! And that with a very simple two colour approach!
This even makes me think about getting a Phantom for myself...
I think that scale is really showing your skills better than even your other 'normal' sized mini's! it really looks fantastic Scar, the gems and subtle glow is done just right without going ott with osl, the shades of grey/black are perfect on it too, very nicely done!
How are you doing the chipping on your Emperor's Children? They look super realistic. If you could put a tutorial up that would be amazing. I also wnated to thank you for the great inspiration you are to all of us. You have inspired me to do a EC and Salamanders Pre-Heresy Force
LutherMax:
For the bigger models i basically do the same as for the smaller ones.
Chip everything with chipping fluid then go with the AK interactive products to create the rust effects.
These products are all oil based.
Look up AK interactive rusty streaks on youtube!
TheEmperor'sChild:
The battle damage is pretty simple, just stipple with black were you want the chips, and then highlight it on the bottom of the chip to create some depth
And then onto my World Eaters Titan who finally got his own base now ready to enter battle!
To this painting standard it would probably go for around 700 euro's.
Thats only for the paint job not the building.
Took me about 2 weeks full time to get it to this level.
Thanks for letting me know! I just wanted to let you know that beacause of this blog I bought a bunch of forgeworld heresy marines and plan on making a EC/salamanders force. Thank you so much and I hope you don't mind when I ask about you painting technique!
Stunning as always have been following your work since this post began :L the shields from plastic card were a great help too, go perfect with manreaper on my deathgaurd termies ;D
Thanks for your help! I hope to one day come close to your level of painting. When I get home from high school I will start working on my mk3 marines!. Thank you for being such an amasing inspiration to us all. Do you primarily airbrush or do you use a brush after the base coat? Just looking to see if investing in an airbrush is worth it.
btw Are you using cork for your bases?
Keep up the amazing work and I hope to see some amazing models. Have you thought about doing a Night Lords Pre heresy? They have one of the coolest backgrounds and have a great lightning armor paintjob.
Sorry to bother you but I am looking to buy an airbrush (finally!) and would like to know what setup you use. You seem to get great results and I have gotten some seriously varying advice in terms of airbrush and compressor. If you could reccomend an airbrush and compressor that would make everything so much simpler! Thank You!
Since i have sold my World Eaters and im currently working on a new project but its not heresy anymore i changed the tread to painting log.
I will post all my WIP pictures here from now on!
Here is a little sneak peak of what's coming up!
They are still WIP...
You just un-subbed yourself, and it is a well-known and persistent bug that Lego knows about that means that now not only can't you re-sub, but it also won't show up on your computer at all now!!!
Look, Scar, you and I are starting to have a real problem now pal. I have the same problem with NF09, but you're here now, so I'm sorry - you get the gripe.
When I open up a painting blog, I do not want to be discouraged by seeing gorgeously painted mini's. I want to see utter gak. I want to know that I can do better than the poster has done. But nooooooo, not you, you have to put amazing pictures up EVERY SODDING TIME. And you know what the worst part is? Every time you put something new up, it just keeps getting better.
Seriously dude, if you don't put up a picture of a marine with multi coloured limbs that look like it's been painted by a spastic grot, you and me are gonna come to blows.
Consider yourself warned.
(Obligatory smiley to raise the tone of the post )
Wow! An army in this scheme would look awesome. I'm not too sure about the flame though - looks a bit cartoony or something... But hey, maybe that was point!
First one I've seen too (I'm still waiting for mine to arrive!).
Nice to see one with some weathering. I particularly like the way you've done the rust patches on the back of the carapace.
That was an awesome post, Scar! Thank you very much for sharing that. If I'm dropping hard earned dollars on that sucka, then I want the most bang for my buck.
Luther: Its black mixed with Turquoise from vallejo model color with a edge highlight of pure Turquoise.
Brown/rust is done with AK interactive products Rust wash and Rusty streaks.
Ill shoot some group shot tonight at my local club with all the models together!
The army will be bigger, client is already sending me the next batch so stay tuned!
I'm loving this Eldar army, such nice colours that work well with eachother and the basing style they are on. Absolutely brilliant.
Also the HoneyComb style design on the helmets is so cool!
Very impressive work Scar. I love all the subtle shades and hues worked into the pale skin of the dwarf's face. Reds and blues... things you wouldn't expect. Are the extreme highlights and shadows (specifically on/under the arms) all painted or is some of that the effect of the lighting?
I'm just looking and the shadows under his arms (say, where he's resting against the stones) all the way to the near-white highlights on the upper parts of the arm armor. I figure some of that is actual light creating shadows and highlights... but I know that painters of your calibur can actually paint those effects in as well. I was just curious as to how much of what I'm seeing was planned by you & how much was just physics.
Its pure white but i used vallejo model air white with a paint brush i find it really nice to paint with since its substance is already thinned down and the paint has more pigments in it.
Since i first did the glowing spots and then painted the runes on them and it is thin white you can see a bit blue coming through.
Fantastic work scar! Best dwarves I've seen for my tastes! Could you go into a little detail about the gator bases? I'm quite partial to juggle bases and would to know more about your approach cheers
Today i finished the Dwarf army!
Here are some pictures of all the finished units:
This army is painted in basic, medium and high quality tabletop levels.
Anyway's
Incoming Space wolves army commission!
This is a half painted army done by another studio who disappeared into thin air with my clients money and half of his models.
I think it is really sad these things happen and thank my client for his trust in my studio.
Now onto some pictures!
People on dakka are less interested in WFB in general, it might explain the lack of comments despite your awesome job on those Dwarves...
As for the Wolves, they're just great... Did you assemble the Wolf Guards yourself ? I love their poses & armament choice (Cyclone ML + LCs is just too good to pass up )
Its a army that is already pained half and i need to match it.
Thats why its not as ''good'' as the other armies are.
I really don't like this color combo its way to harsh with the red and yellow and dark grey imo.
But hey if the client wants it like this i paint it for him!
Then something else:
(if this is not allowed then an admin can remove this post and i give you my sincere apologies!)
But im giving away this riptide! https://www.facebook.com/ScarsMiniatureMadness
Some finished Space Wolfs!
Im pretty excited about this commission, coming up the next couple of weeks a Knight lancer from FW a Falchion and tons of marines!
Scarsminimadness wrote: About the dwarf copter, what do you guys think, Does the blue need an extra highlight with more ''white'' or shall i leave it like this?
TBH, an "extra" highlight would make them even more good-looking !!
Hi Everyone!
In between all the fantasy project i have atm i have managed to paint these 5 drop pods for a client.
They needed to match his current crimson fist army.
Yggdrasil: i don't know.. its really strange material a bit like sanding paper.
So painting thin lines is almost impossible.
And cleaning the board is a pain!
My client did it, i did it and it needed 2 cans of purity seal to make sure it does not scratch instantly when moving a model.
But the end results are pretty nice imho
Here the Finished Necron Bugs!
Ill make a little YouTube video tonight with some group shots of the army on the Necron FW tile!
Well, the picture in your previous post... Maybe my browser had a glitch yeasterday, as it works just fine now...
Awesome army shot, but... What are the "small" flying spiders ? The ones just a bit smaller than Wraiths or Spyders ? Can't remember those models, surely they must be FW ??
I will admit, I'm new to this thread.... I can't actually recall how I got here but suffice it say, I've gone through every page and I am in awe of your work.
I feel like I need to go repaint everything I have now lol
Love the blue lights. They're subtlety makes them work so well. Just the right amount of glow.
The only things I'm not sold on are the heat effect on the assault cannons of the talons and the dread treads (although I realize those weren't your decision). Still great stuff and the color scheme works great on all the vehicles.
Not too sure about the way you've done the gold on those heavy bolter feeds Scar... looks too bland or something, as though there's only been one colour used. I think a (heavier) wash or line shading in the recesses would go a long way.
I could be totally wrong of course but there's my two cents
I love the dreadnaughts with the treads and the head swaps on the scouts make them look really cool and unique. Your paint jobs are also (and always) amazing.
The Son's of Persuis are great, I really like your mastery over the off source lighting and the eyes, in particular those scouts with the Scion heads! Their eyes are just stunning!!!
I didn't think those Knights were available already... Are they made entirely of resin, or do they use some plastic parts from the "regular" Knight ? (Upper half maybe ?)
Nice job on the weathering and the aggressive stance !
