Edited (apparently you can post long messages from your phone)
I'll try and keep a daily update, or at least as often as I get to work on my Primaris Force for the next two weeks. I've entered into Pittsburgh's Steel Legion GT. 2000 Pt 2-Day Tournament. I've just submitted my (as of yet untested) army List. Not going for super competitive, but went for fun and what looks like a true strike force.
Three Detachments: Battalion, Vanguard, Spearhead
HQ:
- Primaris Captain in Gravis w/Burning Blade
- Primaris Lt with Power Sword & Pistol w/Armor Indominous
- Primaris Lt with Auto Boltrifle
- Primaris Lt with Auto Boltrifle
Troops:
- 4 x 5 Marine Intercessor Squads with Boltrifle
Fast Attack:
- 1 x 5 Marine Inceptor Squad with Assault Bolters
Heavy Support:
- 2 x 5 Marine Hellblaster Squads with Plasma Rifle
- 1 x 5 Marine Hellblaster Suqad with Heavy Plasma Rifle
Elites:
- 2 x Apothecaries
- 1 x 5 Marine Riever Squad with Pistol, Close Combat Weapon and Grav-Chutes
- Redemptor Dreadnought with Gattling Guns
Rough Battleplan:
- Keep Captain and Power Sword Lt with an Apothecary in the center with some interecessors
- Keep Lts 2&3 and Apothecary with Heavy Support
- Deep Strike Inceptors and Rievers in backfield / soft targets
- Dread for mobile fire support / CC if needed
Nothing fancy lol will probably get wrecked
Pile of Plastic Shame:
- 5 more Intercessors (in progress)
- 5 more plasma rifle Hellblasters
- 5 heavy plasma rifle hell blasters
- Lt. with auto bolt rifle
- 2 apothecaries
- Dread
Intercessors are about half done (see below). Lt & Rifle Blasters are built and need primed. Dread is in component pieces currently. Can I finish this by next weekend?? We'll see - 19 minis, 13 days

Best of luck. Primus marines (marines in general) are a tough army to win with. Lots of points very few figures.

Alright, 4th and final 5 man intercessor squad done.
10 more Hellblasters, 1 Lt, 2 Inceptors, 2 Apothecaries and a Dread
oh, and then they all need based...

Great stuff Azalle. I think those models would really stand out if you were to base them with a nice snow or ice base, fyi.

Post by: Master Azalle
I think someone may be slightly biased there Ice.
Solar, that's the plan. I have everything I need to base them. I'll probably assembly line it, I should be able to do it all in a night *fingers crossed*

Soooo I got a little excited, and started finishing the Redemptor build. Annnd in that process, managed to glue in place a few of the bits that are intended to slide. Soooo he currently would have a hell of a lean back pose.
In order to rectify that, I clipped some sprue, broke out the larger drill bit, and made a new post for the big guy to rotate on. He has since been primed, but here's the final build.

Looking great Azalle. Nice save on the dread, I've made similar mistakes myself. A few too painful to think about.

That’s an aggressive painting schedule there to try to keep, good luck!
I like the reavers, nice use of a swapped palette there.

Post by: Master Azalle
Thanks for stopping by FSU. Yeah it was painful. There was a solid 15 minutes of me cursing the tech priest that came up with the damn thing.
Nev! Yeah, it's a little aggressive... I need 15 more in one week I think I can do it.
I have the the next 6 - 5 hellblasters and the last LT - primed, base colors, and washed.
And here's the monster. Stayed up too late, but got him done last night! Needs based of course

Not too much work tonight. 5 Hellblasters are primed (although that's not new). Washed and details picked out in black (the pouches). Not much but it's something

Wow, your output rate is amazing, and the results are great too! I am envious
Really love that colour scheme, it's interesting without being a jumble of colours...

Post by: Master Azalle
Thanks Slinky! I'm hitting a wall, which isn't good haha I still have 9 more primaris marines to finish by Saturday aside from these 6.
2 are Apothecaries. So they will be a lot quicker (I hope)
the Inceptors and the heavy hellblasters will probably give me an ulcer. We will see what I can get done later tonight

These look great! Really tidy work on that redemptor, and I’m so jealous of how quickly you can turn these minis around! Good luck with the next 9.

Post by: Master Azalle
Hey Plod! Thanks brother. The Redeptor took a couple of coats to look uniform / smooth. Not looking forward to painting a Repulsor!
Ok. Time for an update. Pretty frantic night / evening on my end. The 5 Hellblasters and LT are about 85% done. Highlights and Sol done, they need the bone trim on the inner shoulder pad though. They need their helmets and backpacks and then done.
The intercessors are primed, washed with nuln oil and and the black blue blocked out. Ready for green and leadbelcher.
The apothecaries are primed white and their bases primed black. Really didn't like the whole "holding geneseed mid battle" pose. Soo one I've elevated the pistol, and given him a combat knife from the intercessor box. The second will have the bolt pistol as modeled but with the intercom arm also from the intercessor box. Had to mix it up.
I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Just 5 more Hellblasters. Bodies are built, need to build the heavy versions next.
For the record, there's no way I'm keeping this pace up once they are based haha. I will eventually round out the intercessors to full 10 man squads and the Rievers to a 10 man as well. But that's for like... after finals. Law school is pretty rough with studying.
Oh yeah, pics or it didn't happen

Wait, you are painting at this pace while in law school? Are you mad? Don’t you have mid tems that should be devouring your life right about now?
Nice work, especially considering the pace. Think you are going to make your deadline?

Wow. great stuff. That Dread is spot on good. Your gonna have a nice looking army for sure. Envy consumes me!

Yes. I am in fact mad! Solar, my deadline is tomorrow. I have five more to finish! Well, the backpack and the helmets of the apothecary as well. I'm finishing up the helmets for the second set of five hell blasters. We will see if I sleep tonight
And now for the final Lieutenant

Hey Dakka, sooo it's been a hot minute. A lot has happened since my last post. My Primaris Marines have grown to a sizeable force. I went 2-1-2 in a local Tournament, had a lot of fun playing (with the exception of my crushing defeat by a Guard player who had this tricked out list). I haven't worked too much on my mini's since November with finals work and death in the family. But, I've made progress since I've updated Dakka.
So The rule of the internet is, "pics or it didn't Happen" so. Let's starting laying out my Primaris force - here's my 4 - 5 man intercessors to start!

Post by: Master Azalle
Hey Mad! Thanks for dropping by brother! Yeah law school and life tends to get in the way.
Ice! Thanks brother! I'm really happy with the level I can paint the Blades of Vengeance at without spending Too much time on them. I'm using Pop Goes The Monkey's tactical and heavy support symbols, they're pretty great. I have a request in to him to make the Blades of Vengeance Chapter symbol too.
I'm currently at 62 Primaris marines in the force completely painted. The goal is to make it a full company. I have another 20 marines from Dark Vengeance to round out the 4 five man intercessor squads, 10 more of the Dark Vengeance Hellblasters as well to make two full 10 man Hallblaster squads. Plus I've been ebay bits shopping and I've picked up an Intercessor squad for extra bits so I don't painfully have the same models - the Sgts in my 5 man interncessors have simple part swaps on them.
Here's my Heavy Plasma Cannon Primaris Squad. I plan on adding another 5 marines to this squad to get a full 10 man.

Hey Dakka! Next up on the force entry are my fast attack Inceptors. I'm more of a fluff guy verses what is maxed out / allowable in game. So I've made my inceptors into a 5 man squad. Their brother squad is actually nearing completion so that I will have a full 10 men in the assault category on the roster. I purposely left their bases black. I feel like it gives them more of a free falling feel to it. I may go back and adjust. (side not, i purposely left my rievers' bases blank as well as they all have grave chutes).

Next group up I'm actually really proud of. The Ancient's progress was posted earlier, really like how his banner came out.
The 4 Lts (yes 4) I wanted to be able to run two in either configuration. I also love the the body of the one that comes in Dark Vengeance, the one with the eagle on the right shin. Soo I went and parted out / bit shopped / for three more
Also a slight mod on the Captain in gravis armor - just moved his sword down to more of a "Imma hit you with dis blade" pose than strait up in the air.

Time away but tons of progress. Looking great, man. I love the LTs.
74800
Post by: Master Azalle
Thanks Brother! I appreciate it, I loved working on the Lts.
So I don't have all of the specialists done yet, But I do have my company medics. You need to harvest the geneseed Brothers! I also hated the "Imma stare at this in the middle of combat" so I made some arm swaps. Picking up a 10 man box of the intercessors really made a big difference. Totally worth it for all the additional bits that come in the box.

Post by: IceAngel
Very nice. I like how those turned out. Good bit swaps too. Those little adds go a long way.
89168
Post by: youwashock
Wow, even more. Arm swaps were a good call. You said specialists. Will there be a Primaris Chaplain in the lineup?
74800
Post by: Master Azalle
Thanks Ice! Yeah I just really did not like the stock pose. Fortunately there was enough give in the model that when I positioned the absolved bolt pistol horizontal and instead of straight down, it looked like he was still aiming and not being a gangster with the sideways shot, and the arm with the knife out feels far more appropriate - like “I’m busy, bother me and I’ll stab your face in” - and the comm link arm fits well, like he’s giving a status report.
and yes, a chaplain and librarian are both on their way. Currently the chaplain will be up next after I finish my last 5 Incenceptors. The Chaplain is clipped and cleaned and awaiting primer. I plan to finish the Inceptors this week and get the chaplain out next.
74800
Post by: Master Azalle
Infantry aside (who perform admirably) this next guy really kicks arse and takes names... a long list of names (Unless he is nuked turn 1.... haha... which happens) The plan is to add a second one to the company, probably after I've pickup up two Repulsors (even though I really don't like how it looks)

Post by: Master Azalle
I didn't take any WIPs of the second set of 5 inceptors as they had been sitting primed and with their first wash on my work bench since before the holidays soooooo I just knocked them out! And now, I have a full (in my opinion) set of 10 Inceptors ready to rain down a hailstorm of bolt shells
Oh and I do have a WIP of the start of my Chaplain

Alright guys, since, apparently, I don't have the self control to stop at a certain point on a single model project... I knocked out my Primaris Chaplain last night
So, two pictures! 1st up is my WIP collage, in order from Top Left to Right and then Second row Left to Right in progession
2nd picture is the completed Chaplain! Really happy with how he turned out
Side Note - yes I know he is missing a piece on his robes, I'm waiting for some buts to come from Ebay so I can add an appropriately Dark Angelish bit

Post by: Master Azalle
Thanks Shock! Yeah I actually thought about doing the robe Bone colored, but I'm really happy I went with Green. If I paint another one, maybe I'll go with bone for him.
Nev! Ask and you shall recieve. Still need to finish basing the the Rievers and the 10 man Standard Hellblasters.
I have the first 5 of the next 20 Intercessors almost done as well. Just need to finish their helms before I base them. The plan is to take my current 4 5-man squads up to a full 10.
I currently have 50 Battle Brothers ready (the ones in the picture!) and I have enough marines on hand to round that out to a complete company. 10 more Dark Imperium Hellblasters, the aforementioned 20 more DI intercessors. I have 5 more Rievers, and two boxes of Aggressors to make a 5 man team as well. Once I get through all of that, I'll build a 10 man intercessor with auto bolt rifles and 10 with Stalkers and that should round me out at 100 plus command / specialists.... and then probably another Dread....

Thank you everyone for stopping by! Nothing too crazy today. I knocked out 5 more intercessors last night.
If I haven't mentioned it before, I'm using PopGoesTheMonkey's squad marking bits over on shapeways. They're a little too thick to use on normal space marines, but on Primaris Marines, especially the ones from Dark Imperium that you can't swap the shoulder pads out, they rock. I use his Angels of Vengeance and Angels of Vigilance pads too. Great stuff, worth the money if he has what you're looking for and he does take requests.

Master Azalle! I almost feel bad that I haven't visited before! What a rocking blog you've got. I'm a big fan of the Primaris founding material that's coming out. Your command structure stuff is cool, I now see what you mean about your Lt.s! I envy your ability to pump out large 10-man squads, that's got to be my weakness

lipsdapips wrote:Master Azalle! I almost feel bad that I haven't visited before! What a rocking blog you've got.
Well, I'm glad you ALMOST felt bad about it brother!
And the 10 man squads are a lot easier to do on the smaller original Space Marines. There's a lot more real estate and hard lines on the primaris marines. I'm finishing my next round of 5 intercessors before I build my 5 man Aggressors.
@YouWasShock Thanks for stopping in brother. I really do love how the shoulder pad decals turned out. Not going to lie, I was a little hesitant at first. PopGoesTheMonkey on shapeways puts out some great parts. He just uploaded the symbol for the Blades of Vengeance, So I have those coming my way too! As well as a vehicle Icon pack. Really excited for that.
No new pictures as I've manged to goof the camera on my phone... hopefully ill have that sorted out by the end of next week.
74800
Post by: Master Azalle
Been a little while. Longer than I'd like. Sadly, my phone (which is also my camera) was in need of some *minor* ministrations from the tech priests. After the Ministorum sent the wrong parts twice... I've managed to fix it! Hazzah.
But! I was in fact working without having my camera working and busy. I may or may not have also acquired three Armiger Warglaives (cuz... that's a super heavy detachment...) and in an effort to be competitive... I'll be finishing a Supreme Command Detachment of Sammael and two Talon Masters... bc thats a lot of dakka, at T5, with power swords... sooo yeah.
ANYWAYS. I am still working on finishing my Primaris Company. I'll be jumping back and forth between Blades of Vengeance and Angels of Vengeance going forward. I'm also waiting on a pile of resin from Pop Goes the Monkey. My request was answered and I now have BoV icons coming my way!
But, pics or it didn't happen:

Don’t worry Panda. The OG Marines have not been forgotten.
74800
Post by: Master Azalle
So, I've started working on my Supreme Command Detachment!
I have forgotten how much actual detail there was on the landspeeder models. I was a lil sneaky about this though. I bought 3 of the easy to build versions (the blue plastic snap togethers) Because I could find them for $18 a pop on ebay. I was only able to source 1 of the twin linked assault cannons, but I have enough of the twin linked heavy bolters for all three. I bit the bullet and ordered two more sprues through my LFGS.
Side note on the "easy to build" landspeeders.... They are Maddening to put together. My modeling skills have improved over the years, and I'm quite proud of that, but these guys were just a nightmare... Anyways... after cursing the GW ad nuasium... I managed to get three chaises together. So I have the initial priming and my first wip below

All class man. I'll second the frustration on the easy to build kits. Now I always just cut off those pins that hold them and glue them normally. The myphitic blught hauler nearly pushed me over the edge

Post by: Nevelon
I wonder if the “easy build” speeders are just the old 3rd ed spures. Which were a nightmare to build.
Progress is looking good.
74800
Post by: Master Azalle
Nev, I’m pretty sure they are the old 3rd Ed Speeders. They are indeed a nightmare. Thanks for stopping by guys! I’ll have more progress shots later today
74800
Post by: Master Azalle
A little later then intended, but a few work in progress shots for what's on the work bench.
1st up is my Counts as Sammael. Finished with most of the hard edge highlighting. Not going to lie, more than a little burned out on these three speeders. So I'm holding off on the two talon masters until the twinlinked assault cannons I ordered come in. Hopefully by that time I'll have some fresh impetus to finish all the details.
Next up are the next 5 Dark Imperium Hellblasters. Nothing crazy, just knocking out the big stuff for now. Primed, washed with Nuln Oil, based the black, red and bone. Bone still needs 2nd layer and wash of agrax. That'll be next then blockin in the dark angels green.
And the start of my next project. I've been meaning to actually paint up my own Techmarine. I bought one completed and painted off ebay for a tournament a few years back, but really wanted to give it a go myself I really hate the look of the techmarine without his helmet on. So this was my first real big conversion I've done with the old finecast. Nothing too crazy, took a dremel to the head and knocked it out. Rounded out the back where his head sat inbetween his armor. and made it as uniform as possible. Sticking with the theme I've used in my unique models (characters / sgts) I pulled out one of my spare FW Iron Hands helms that I thought felt suitably techmariney. Still need to do a final clean up for mold lines and cork his base, but I'll try and prime him this week.

Trucking right along with the hellblasters. Put the second coat of bone down, and washed twice with aggrax. Second coat of Mephiston Red on the chest pieces. Boltgun... i meant leadbelcher on the pipping between the armor, and the main coat of dark angels green down. Final armor highlights are next after finishing the bone shoulder pads. Then onto the guns themselves.
Also, I realized I never finished my Primaris Company Master's power sword. So I went back and hit it with the split light effect you see a lot on force weapons. Not sure how I feel about it. Would love some feedback.

So, finals are the worst. FYI. and law school finals are extra the worst. That being said, the hellblasters have been put to the back of the production log while I knock out a few large models for the final round of a tournament I have coming up.
What might those be? Armigers my friends. TWO of 'em. lol mind you I have two more on the sprues. I was orginally going to keep with my Freeblade design but after accidentally stumbling across the Hose Avernyii Color scheme... and finding out that they were initially discovered by the Dark Angels legion, makes them perfect. soo: here's the first wip. Spray 'em black and then base coat caliban green leaving a little bit of black around the plate joins and chasing.

Post by: Master Azalle
Ok, not too much additional work here. Took abbadon black and lahrimen (sp?) medium at about a 50/50 mix, then used a wet brush to pick up some of that mix and go back in and darken the areas on the model that would be even slightly recessed or at the joins of metal plates. Nothing crazy. Then went back and tidey up with caliban green.

So.... I know I have been absolutely all over the place. Annnnd it's going to continue that way for a while. I've decided I can't build or prime anything else until I work through everything currently on my desk... I believe I said this a few weeks back... and I clearly lacked the will power to follow through. Sooo Armigers to the side. 1st Legion Time - Cataphractii Terminators!
I will eventually make this a squad of 10 - but for now its the first 5.
Build: Plastic Cataphractii set. 4 Resin left arms from the upgrade set, maces / mauls removed and resin swords from the MkII upgrade set used instead. Not a huge fan of how thin / flimsy these look. But I'm hoping that will improve once I start painting. Sgt has a resin plasma blaster and the stock plastic sgt power sword. I've also swapped in the DA FW helmt. I filed down the bottom of the helmet till it fit snuggly in place. I've also used PopGoesTheMonkey's DA Shoulder pads. I think these look stunning and I can't wait to get some paint on them!

So, since I promised myself I’d finish everything on my work bench before building anything new... (yes I’m clearly a masochist) I’ve done two things:
Finished Assembling the next 5 cataphractii to include two heavy weapons with magnetized arms. I’ll need to buy more pads from PopGoesTheMonkey to have a fully megnatized set but I already planned on doing that so I can have a 10 man lightning claw unit as well.
Finally put some paint on my converted Ultramarine Herald. Simple head swap with some dremmeling, removed the ultra iconography and swapped the banner top with one from the DA upgrade set. I also shaved down the VIII down to just an ‘I’ I still need to add something to the bottom circle. But I’ll get to it.
I also tried something new, I went with a red face guard. I figure this guy has seen some serious gak, and it just kinda felt ‘right’ but I am always up for C&C - what do you guys think?

Nice work on the herald , I like the spot color on the mask.
If your looking for ideas for the circle, will the winged sword (raven wing) symbol fit inside of it? Otherwise you could use the knee pad color signifier for 40k unit in it to symbolize a certain company as having providing a pivotal role in the battle.

Thanks Theophony! I'll probably table that for the time being and press on with the mountain of plastic (and resin) shame I have on my work bench haha
But! Here are my Legion HQs as it stands! Centurion, Herald!!!, and Librarian

Hey Azalle.
Nice looking AoV. I really like the overall mix of kits you've used for your marines. That Leviathan is the business. A great looking model in a very appropriate pose.
The painting on the Primaris guys is solid too.

Hey Snrub! Thanks for stopping by! I love my Levi. I have two more to build haha
And I really enjoyed kitbashing once I got past my four standard tactical squads. My bits bit is deep, very deep!

Thanks Shock! I'll get him finished over the weekend. Just need to complete the base. Then on to the next pile of shame. I want to knock as much out before I start my last year of law school.

There's something really satisfying about duel assault cannons.
Contemptor looks good. Nice ratio of red and black.

Thanks Snrub! The red helps him to tame out from the other Contemptors
So I didn’t take any WIP shots and I knocked these guys out rather quickly. But her’s the first of 3 x 5 man scout squads. In the tournament league I’m playing in the all are armed with boltguns and while I like the look of the shot guns, the bolt guns are what we’re going with. Thoughts?

Job's a good'un, as I have heard it said. I can't speak to bolt vs shot guns, but they look cool.

Thanks shock! I’ve got the next 5 built and ready for primer. But before that, I need to finish the Armigers I started when Firgebane came out
So! First Armiger Warglaive is ready to be based! House Vyronii . If I’m reading the fluff correctly they fought alongside the Dark angels in the Horus Heresy too!

Can't speak as to the combat effectiveness of bolters vs shotguns, but I'm a firm believer of rule of cool trumps all. And while boltguns are cool, nothing's quite as cool as giving some deserving bastard a face full scatter shot.
As far as the painting goes, they look good. I feel they need something to help break up the black. The red of the AoV symbol would be enough I think. Colour splash does kinda go against the whole scout aspect of them though.
The green on that armiger is spot on and meshes nicely with the gold. I hadn't seen House Vyronii before. It uses similar colours to what I had tentatively decided to use for my own knights. Might need to do some research on them now. Especially given their connection to the dark angels.

I agree that there a spot color on the scouts will go a long way. I may add transfers to their shoulder pads to help break them up a bit. I managed to get my ha ds on two of the angels of vengeance transfer sheets GW made in the early 2000s
Oh, and this is the wiki I read up on House Vyronii. Discovered by DA and stayed loyal.
