That's understandable, not everyone is into video games, but if you are the Witcher trilogy is great (especially the 3rd).
It's great to see you becoming a bit of a regular btw.
Glad you like her base. The edges were actually the part I spent the least time on. I saw someone else on the facebook group go to town on the base with that liquid water effect stuff, but it's not something I would use often so I've never bought any before.
One of the cool things about the game is that the bases are all really detailed, but the hag is basically just flat so it took some improvising to make it work.

Thanks inmygravenimage, I thought you might like her.
Not that there always has to be comments, but it helps to have some company that really know the hobby.
Everyone I know likes my work, but I'm the only one that does any painting.
My good friend who was the person that originally introduced me to Warhammer back in middle school tragically died of cancer way too young.

Anyway I finished that one more surprise I mentioned before.
It's the first witcher playable character, Ciri.
She is pretty much the only character from the videogames that is in the board game, other than Philippa Eilhart in the mages expansion.
This is because the board game takes place about a century before the videogames.
Despite this Ciri shows up because I guess technically she might have time travel powers or something, not quite sure.
Mostly she is there because during the kickstarter campaign there was a massive amount of whining by some people that there isn't enough female representation.
They didn't care in the slightest that the established witcher lore states that no girl has ever survived the Trial of the Grasses which is the chemical mutation process to which the witchers owe their enhanced reflexes and abilities.
They also didn't care that the company added an entire expansion to appease them, the mages which are half girls, because it was a paid addon so apparently that doesn't count.
Nevertheless I'm happy to have Ciri in the game.
The other witchers are basically non-cannon so I'm not sure what kind of paint scheme I will use for them yet.

I have a lot more witcher models that I want to work on, but like I said, my roommates demand that only they get to decide when it is cool enough to paint.
We have 3 air conditioners in a tiny apartment now yet they still like to act like a couple lights is a reason to start world war 3.
Not to complain excessively, but it's insufferable having the same argument over and over when conversely they get to do whatever they want.
It's not even like we live in an especially hot climate, it's Canada. eyeroll

Thanks a bunch, and you're too right. I don't usually respond without something else to show, but case in point I guess I won't be posting my stuff to the Witcher facebook group anymore.

I'm not saying my painting is the best in the world or anything, but given that most people who play board games don't have much experience painting I can say that my work is better than about 90% of what I see posted from others there (mostly contrast and speed paints).
However, that didn't stop several people from making probably the most mean-spirited comments I've seen for that sort of thing on my Ciri post.
It really is a pathetic excuse for a so-called community, but I guess that just makes me more appreciative that Dakka seems to be one of the last vestiges of good folks left on the internet.

I very much appreciate your reassurance. I have been on Dakka for 9 years almost to the day so I'm not that far behind you. Hopefully this sanctuary remains in perpetuity.

Today I managed to complete the ghostly Noonwraith.
They look even creepier at full size in the video game. According to the bestiary they are the spirits of young women who died violent deaths right before their weddings.
There is also a Nightwraith to get to at some point.

Next in line is one of the larger models, the Griffin. With the exception of the Nekker, I have been painting the monsters in the order in which they appear in the video game.
The Griffin is the boss fight for the opening area so once it is done I was planning on trying to get the game to the table.

Thanks for that favorable comparison. I wasn't hugely into the original Hellboy movies, but I do happen to own the reboot in 4k despite it being critically panned. That's partly because I enjoy almost any movie with Milla Jovovich. Someday I'll get back to painting that giant Leeloo figure.
Anyway, it helps a lot to be painting more stuff from a video game IP, similar to the Horizon game, since there is so much reference material.

With that in mind I have another slightly bigger update for you today.
The first of this pair, the aforementioned Griffon, I actually finished a few days ago, but just hadn't gotten around to posting yet.
It's always tricky painting something with a lot of black, but I'm trying to stay as true to the source as possible. I think he turned out mostly okay.

I figured 6 monsters was enough to finally try out the base version of the game which plays pretty well so far. For a solo match you only have to fight 1 each of lv 1, 2, and 3 monsters, but it turns out even the griffon is only categorized as a lv 2.

So I'm happy to also be able to now show off my first lv 3 completed, Mr. Troll here.
I've always found trolls amusing whether it be from warhammer fantasy, to Lord of the Rings, but especially in the witcher universe. They're smart enough monsters that they can speak a broken version of the common language, but other than that they're delightfully dim.
I also really like how his belly flesh and face turned out. This one is painted in the style of an Ice Troll rather than rocky variety so I think he came out with a suitably icy sheen, but my matte varnish will most likely dull it down a bit.

I'm not sure what the next monster project will be, maybe something from the single player Wild Hunt expansion, but first I was going to try outa a second game session with the Monster Trail expansion. It has no extra minis, but it is supposed to make all of the monsters more unique in the way they fight.

A much belated thanks for your consistent praise friend.

I'm ashamed at my lack of progress over the last few months. A lot of it was to try and avoid the summer heat as I previously mentioned, but the truth is I have just had a lot of other things keeping me busy.
For one thing, I have read 2 whole books in the meantime. I used to only have 3 of the 8 witcher novels, but I finally bought the complete set so I started fresh back at the beginning. I also bought some really nice hardcover copies of the complete Dune series, and the full works of HP Lovecraft.

Anyway, I can happily say I managed to get something done today, not surprisingly keeping with the Witcher theme, it's a Rotfiend. They're pretty fun in the games because once they are near death they start choking before erupting in a very damaging shower of gore so you have to stay on your toes.

He looks a bit darker than I wanted from the back side, but other than that he went pretty well.

Most of my paints are on death's door from disuse unfortunately. If citadel didn't have so many good colors I would have switched to a different brand long ago because I believe they're badly designed on purpose just to get you to spend even more on them. You have to CONSTANTLY water them down and babysit them just to get them to work at all.
They even want you to buy their lahmian medium over and over that costs just as much as the paints even though it's more or less just water anyway.

I can't say I'll return to my old pace anytime soon, but I'll try to pick it up again to some degree.
I am unable to undercoat anything new until the air conditioner comes out hopefully in the next month or so.

I did get my copy of Vampire the Masquerade Chapters though.
Even though it has an absolutely ridiculously large errata to wade through for pretty much every single scenario, it is actually really fun to play. I love its writing style and setting. I actually have already completed about 1/3 of the campaign playing 2 characters solo. I could have kept going, but I didn't want to blow past it too fast without painting any of it first.

It came with a set of prepainted minis for the players themselves, but they are pretty disappointing. It looks like they spent about 5 minutes at most on each model, but it's better than grey... I guess?

Thanks, but I wasn't so much apologizing as expressing disappointment in myself for falling behind. I've most likely reached a point, since several of the board games I have coming have more than 100 minis a piece, that I won't have enough free time in my entire remaining life to paint everything so taking months off seems like a waste.

I think I'm starting to accept that some of them will just have to be played with mostly plain grey, and just focusing on stuff that I have the most love for. There is no point in board games sitting on the shelf unused, but I still feel the times I do play with everything painted really adds a sense of satisfaction and extra immersion.

With that in mind, I made a bit more progress on the Witcher with a little creature called an Arachas.
It seems to be a plant-like creature with a sort of bulbous venomous sack on its back. He turned out fairly well imo. I kind of wanted more of a fuchsia or pinkish than the purplish it ended up as, but I figured purple and green have always made for good complementary colors.

Oddly enough the board game developers are launching a spinoff campaign already called The Witcher Path of Destiny. I like that it will have a narrative focus, but it sounds like they aren't going far enough with it. They describe it as a Tableau building game with some deck management which sounds kind of basic with somewhat limited replay value.
It's hard for me to say no to anything with the official Witcher license, but I'm trying to hold to my promise to myself to stop pledging for anymore kickstarters even though I have yet to pay off my last one, Monster Hunter World.

The next board game I have arriving is called Nova Aetas Renaissance hopefully sometime in the next couple months. It's fairly unique in that it takes place in Italy, with some beastmen somehow mysteriously being involved.
It's going to be an even more nerve-wracking delivery process than usual because my apartment's only elevator is scheduled for extensive maintenance around that exact same time frame.
If the despicable package pirates that pollute my building steal a giant irreplaceable shipment from me I am going to be pissed.

Thanks again chum. Hopefully you like this next one as much as I do since he is pretty much my favorite enemy to fight in the video game.

A fiend, in this case, is a huge 3 eyed moose monster. Every once in a while they will try and temporarily blind you by staring you down.
I may try lightening up the brown on his antlers, but he came together pretty well for a day and half worth of work.

In other news I am doing terrible at keeping my promise to stop pledging for kickstarters all over again.
This time it's a game that I passed on their last campaign, Final Girl. It's a strictly solo game that mimics famous horror and slasher movies. Each scenario is a different film, called a feature.
I went ahead and purchased a couple features from the first season at retail that are due to arrive in just a few days to try it out since the only films from that season I have any affection for are the Freddy and Jason analogues.
Instead of getting the season 1 miniature pack with a bunch of minis I have no intentions of buying the other boxes for I'm also waiting for actual Freddy and Jason minis I found on ebay.
With any luck their scale won't be too out of place with the rest of the game.

The company is also trying to get the Christmas feature produced right away so it arrives in time for the holidays. It pits you against Krampus.

If there is anyone here that has an interest in horror movies and is not opposed to solo gaming I highly recommend you check it out so we can unlock more stretch goals. There is still about 4 days left to get in on it.

I'm back again with a bit more progress. I think this one came out particularly well.

It's the only actual Witcher I've finished besides Ciri, but since they are generic members of each different school they don't have names. This is the Griffon school.
He looks a lot like Geralt except his hair isn't white. I like how the symbol in his hand represents him casting a spell.
I was literally just going to give up on doing pupils moving forward, and somehow I managed to get his pretty close to perfect on the first try! Normally I ude a fine tip artist's pen, but I was touching up the outer edge of his eye, and accidently twitched my brush, except favorably in this case.
I doubt I can count on that happening again, but I'll take what I can get.

I still have a lot of my Witcher game unpainted, but I was thinking of giving it another playthrough with the new additions.
There are still the Legendary Hunts, Mages, and an entire solo mode that I have yet to work on at all.
I'm about 1/3 done the core game now though.

Happy to hear you like him too. I don't know what the availability of the Old World is like now. I wish they went the traditional co-op narrative campaign instead of competitive, but so far the gameplay is not bad, and to me it was worth it for the miniatures alone. Like you say though, everyone has to make sacrifices.

The board game dev is currently in the middle crowdfunding another Witcher game called Path of Destiny. It is more narrative focused, but not nearly in the way I was hoping for. Instead of a real campaign you build "tableaus" for a handful of tales which do have multiple endings, but so far I'm resisting and sticking with a $1 pledge just in case.

Speaking of campaigns, I have decided to completely ignore the Monster Hunter Iceborne board game, which would be progress except it's only because I just learned that Steamforged is also making the sequel to the Horizon Zero Dawn board game, Forbidden West. More importantly, it sounds like they are doing what I wished they had done the first time around and they are making it into a narrative co-op campaign style game, with some degree of backwards compatibility!

Anyway enough about my attempts to stop punishing my wallet, I do have some actual progress to show.
I present the first of the Legendary Hunts, the Cyclops.
I always hate painting things that are mostly skin, but at least the purple tone is a bit different (if you don't count all my various Slaaneshi Daemons through the years).

Here comes my favorite of the Legendary Hunts, the Ice Giant.
It is found in one of the most exciting quests in the whole videogame where you have to sail to the giant's far away island to look for any survivors of a previous expedition.
The fight itself has some memorable moments as well.

I should really try to get some models for the solo mode done since I have to start it at all, but I'm torn between continuing with Witcher, or maybe starting Final Girl, or even some of my Vampire the Masquerade so I can get further in it without having to use the subpar pre-painted characters.

Much obliged old chum, glad to hear he does not disappoint since like I said he is one of the monsters I am most partial to so I wanted to do him justice.

Tonight I have a change of pace in store. I will still continue with my remaining Witcher stuff, but for now here is the first mini done from that slasher themed solo game I mentioned called Final Girl.
His name is Hans, he is pretty much a stand in for Jason Voorhees, but distinct for legal purposes.

I had gotten a real Freddy and Jason off ebay, but they didn't match up at all with the scale of the rest of the game so I just gave in and got the season 1 FG mini set after all.
I also have the "not Freddy" Dr. Fright, a Poltergeist, and several of the girls you play as to get to, as well as a special Christmas themed scenario where you fight Krampus that should arrive sometime in the coming months.

Thanks a lot, I have yet to actually play my first game of Final Girl so I can't say I even like it yet, but I do love the theme. Most people I see post about it say that you'll lose a lot more sessions of it than you will win, but hopefully there is some fun to be had either way.
I'd say the easiest way to get into it is to hop on the late pledge for season/series 3, but that won't arrive for who knows how many years. You can also just pick up a couple boxes at retail to try sooner.

I don't expect to keep painting at this pace, but here is my first final girl, Laurie, so now I can finally get to testing out the game for myself without feeling the shame of grey minis. There are still more girls/killers of course, even a few little vehicle minis, but all the other victims are just meeples so this is enough for a trial run.
On something this small scale I'm not even going to attempt dotting the pupils.

She looks great, the deep shading really works. Two thoughts - you could use a pigma micron pen for the eyes? Also, how about a white line on the grass, so it feels like a football field or similar (like folk do with blood bowl bases - just paint through a slotta)?

Thanks muchly, and I normally do use a super fine artist's pen for dotting eyes, but it's still a source of pain and frustration on normal sized figures. It doesn't help that I suffer from terribly shaky hands so it's somewhat surprising I manage to get the decent results I do as it is. These ones are even smaller than average, and frankly I have too big of a backlog to get hung up on doing it for every single model.

With that in mind, next up is my first bit of progress and my Vampire the Masquerade game.
Here is Gabriel from the Caitiff clan. I have no prior knowledge of the VtM background, but in game terms he is great because he is the only character that you can choose his starting stats and skills for. All the others are preestablished.
I only play with 2 characters so far so once I eventually finish the other one I will just move on to the enemies and NPC's.

I quite like how he turned out though.
In other news I did way too much black Friday shopping, even though most of it wasn't a particularly a good deal, so I should really get back to doing some work on my 40k army for at least a little while.

Well I have been painting almost everyday this week.
I bought a few more 40k units recently so as usual I wanted to justify my purchases by turning my attention for the time being back to some Chaos stuff. I have built 4 other units (Flesh Hounds, new Possessed, Pink Horrors, and Deathshroud Terminators), but what I ended up working on is this Burning Chariot.

I think it turned out pretty well overall. The boss horror was trickier than expected, but I think I picked a good color scheme for the screamers. I kind of regret giving him the book arm though since it almost totally obscures his face, but oh well.
Also every time I put my gravel/sand on one of the really large bases it separates at some of the edges the next day so I tried to fix it after taking these photos. It's very frustrating.

As always, there are too many options for me to be sure what project will be my next focus, but stay tuned for more.

So I took this current burst of 40k energy to start finally working on my Deathshroud Bodyguard. Hard to believe it's been almost 5 years since I painted up my version of Morty, which is still one of favorites. I'm particularly proud of how this one turned out as well, especially the cloak.

This guy was a test to see if I could match how I did Mortarion's armor because the way I had previously been doing all my green armor was very time consuming and doesn't look as good to me as it once did.
I'd say it was a success, but I don't intend to go back and start repainting all my old stuff. Maybe I will redo my Foul Blightspawn a bit at some point since I could see there being a distinction between all the newer Death Guard sculpts and the slightly more Chaos Undivided lineup.

I also spent a few hours last night building the Poxwalkers I've had laying around forever. I always thought their sculpts were pretty hit and miss so I was considering getting some Deadwalker Zombies as a stand in, but with some head swaps and a few other bits I think I adequately spruced them up.
These are just the converted ones pictured since the others are all stock, along with a few of whatever the things that originally came with the Gellerpox Infected are called.

Seasons greetings inmygravenimage! I'm glad you enjoy my continued work in the field of cloaks and plague-flavored purple.

With that in mind, I've been chipping away at my Deathshroud Bodyguard so I can finally show off the completed trio.
I spent way too long trying to get their cloaks right, but they turned out pretty well in the end.

I'm excited to try and decide what my last project of 2023 will be since I have been assembling something almost every day the past week or 2 so there are more 40k options than ever.
I was even lured in by a bit of Age of Sigmar since there was just 1 box of the Pulgoth's Shudderhood, and the old school metal Nurgle Lord that the Harbinger of Decay is one of the only models I didn't sell from my early days so he's wonderfully nostalgic for me.
I included a few shots of the Blightkings I just finished assembling yesterday with the more heavily converted ones singled out. The one with the flail has like 3 parts for each arm mix and matched from the rest of the unit so I didn't have to leave any of the coolest ones out. Basically everything except his body is swapped somehow.

Also here are some of the Traitor Guard I have been spending time on. I got a box of Jackals because I've always thought they were cool so here are the first couple attempts at making them more Mad Max-ish, and what is eventually going to be the commander of the detachment, what used to be a Tempestus Prime.
He doesn't have his head yet, just because the only one I could find was already undercoated so I didn't want it to have too many layers of paint.
To go along with them I also built the 2 Leman Russ I've had forever and a squad of the Krieg kill team, and that's not even mentioning that my other Chaos Knight is finally at the ready for painting stage, along with a Beast of Nurgle and a few Bloodcrushers.
It's a bit intimidating to start to see how much grey and black is ahead of me, but it's nice that the scale of the army as a whole is finally taking shape.

Lastly for now, since it's better to show than tell I thought now would be a good time for some group shots (there is no way it can all fit it just one), but keep in mind that at least half of it is still unpainted.

Merry Christmas and happy new year in advance to everyone who may be checking this out, and keep an eye out for more of my painting in the new year.

Thank you for your well wishes as well as your compliments. Clearly my army still has a long way to go before it is finished, if there truly ever is such a time, but I am enjoying getting back into it.

I appreciate that Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll, always happy to hear from you.

I hope you both are doing something fun to ring in the new year with.
Today is the first bit of painting I have had the chance for since my last update, but I thought you guys would be pleasantly surprised by the latest creation I have built, a Decimator. I've had this one on the backburner for so long I can't even remember when I got it, other than I think I got a good deal for it on ebay.

He doesn't look nearly as cool without his giant shoulder pads attached yet, but still pretty imposing nonetheless.
I've made a few additions, but most importantly I think he is much improved by my giving him an actual abdomen region. Normally he just has his massive chest directly attached to his pelvis which I always thought was a weird design choice.
I also magnetized his arms. I don't have any alternate weapons so it was really just to make assembly easier, plus it keeps his arms in proportion to his added height and allows to me switch their poses.
Speaking of height, with my modification and the pose I have his legs he stands 12cm or just about 5 inches so not as tall as a knight, but certainly nothing to sneeze at.

Oh, and here are a couple shots of my other newest build. It is the only model I have from I think Artel miniatures.
It's supposed to be a chaplain, but I think he could easily stand in for a dark apostle.
At some point I'm planning to build a unit of chosen from some spare parts that will be armed with a bunch of thunderhammers so he is meant to fit in with them.

As a side note I also finished rebasing my Daemon Prince on a 60mm, plus my Obliterators up to 50mm so that's why they were in disarray in the group shots.
I still have to move a couple of my old units up to 32mm eventually and my havocs up to 40mm, but it's not the most exciting work to show off.

Thanks a bunch MetalOxide! Not sure if you've stopped by before, but if so it's great to see a new face, especially a fellow Nurgle devotee.
Speaking of which, I love your display pic. If you look back at my Death May Die stuff you will have noticed I am a big Cthulhu fan, in fact I recently got a really nice hardcover edition of the complete HP Lovecraft.

I think you'll like this next one a lot.
My first completed mini for 2024 is my take on the Biologus Putrifier. I kind of think he looks like an evil Christmas tree.
He has been on the backburner in my army for years so it feels nice to cross him off the list. He took me 3 days going at it pretty steady, but so far I am liking this new recipe for a more yellow green armor so I guess I'll stick with it.

I would kind of like to get started on my Decimator next, but that's a fairly big project. That goes double for my chaos knight.
Part of me feels I should start doing some actual troops at some point, but I'm not a fan of batch painting.

I noticed the pictures of my last post came out a lot brighter than I had thought. This was partially because I took them under a different overhead light so I may retake them at some point.

Nevertheless I have a special unveiling ready for you today. After nearly a decade from when I first purchased him, I have completed my Decimator. I'm glad to finally have him crossed off my todo list.
I'm on the fence about which style of green armor I will continue with if I ever get to my troop choices, but for this one I decided to go with the old style, both because the model itself is old and very angular shaped.

How do you guys like how he turned out?
AS usual after taking the pictures I realized I had forgotten to paint his eyes so they are actually reddish orange now, and I had to touch up some of the gold trim on his shin armor.

You can see how he stacks up to my Putrifier in the last included picture.

Much obliged, I'm happy to have someone experienced in the teachings of Nurgle like you since this is one of the few "old school" 40k Chaos projects I had left to accomplish.
Mind you, I previously mentioned the many cool giant Creature Caster demons that have a real primal chaos vibe which I have made no progress on in what seems like forever, but that's because they are big projects and I despise working with super glue.

Case in point, I was trying to work on some other resin stuff after building the decimator, and my bottle of super glue dried shut.
This is after only using it for like 2-3 days so it is still 99% full. The last bottle I have lasted much longer, but was still half full by the time it was completely unusable. I hate not being able to use things I payed for because of faultiness, not to mention the uncountable times I've glued my fingers together while the actual model in question just falls apart like the glue wasn't even there.
So that's why I've stopped buying anything resin.

Anyway, I'm taking a bit of a break from 40k to return to some board games, in this case more Final Girl, so here is Krampus from the special Christmas themed scenario that just came out.
It's a bit late to still be the proper season, but I'm curious to see how it plays. I still have a reindeer and Mrs. Claus to work on, but this guy is ready to whip some naughty lil snots nevertheless.
I kind of like how he ties into the Creature Caster bust I painted of Krampus 5 years ago, almost exactly to the very day.

It was the first bust I ever bought, and I actually went back to him last year to attach him to a proper plinth. I should probably update his pictures to reflect that, but usually minis look better when they're fresh plus I think I didn't get the rod drilled in quite as deep as I should have.

Thanks, always happy to come back to your consistent replies.

It's taken a bit longer than intended, but I've returned with the aforementioned Mrs Claus and her pet reindeer so I can finally get around to trying it out. There is also a 2nd choice of girls to play as for each scenario, but I still have a couple other episodes to work on before I start doubling up.

I may try to paint up the not Freddy Kreuger next, but I may start work on my Nova Aetas Renaissance instead. We shall see.

 inmygravenimage wrote:

I'm somewhat embarrassed to report that I have had the core game for over a month and all I have managed to do with it is undercoat the stuff for the tutorial mission, punch out the punchboards, and assemble the tracker dials. Putting together the giant one for tracking initiative was a lot more nerve-wracking than expected. I ended up having to use a screwdriver, my kitchen counter, and most of my body weight just to get it snapped together properly so I'm glad I didn't accidentally destroy it in the process.
The minis look very nice, some bent weapons, but that usually happens. They are a slightly bigger scale than 40k, but probably not as big as Oathsworn.
From what I have heard it is a very challenging game (you'll need both a good strategy AND a lot of luck for anything past the first couple missions) and the rules could have been organized better, but other than that it sounds fun.

Hopefully the next kickstarter in line, ISS Vanguard, will be delivered to me successfully very soon, and Tainted Grail Kings of Ruin shouldn't be too far behind that.

Anyway to get back to what little progress I have made lately here is the next Final Girl slasher villain.
This one is a legally distinct version of Freddy called Dr. Fright. Instead of haunting elm street it is... Maple Lane, so maybe it's Canadian Freddy? The yellow sweater is a bit bright, but that is what the game art shows him having, and I figured it would be easier than the stripes Freddy normally wears.

My neck has been acting up yet again so I am trying to take it easy, but I'll be back sooner or later.

Going back to my Death Guard for now, I have been doing a lot more assembling this past week. I was running pretty low on glue, and I have a habit of buying more than I probably should just so I can meet the almost absurdly high threshold for free shipping my FLGS has in place so as usual I tried to get a little something painted to put a dent in my backlog.

(Nova Aetas continues to get no attention it would seem, but that might be the case for a while since now I also just received my copy of both waves of ISS Vanguard).

With that in mind, here is another project I have had on the backburner for several years.
It's the first member of my Warp Claws squad. I have wings for them all since I like having demonic possession as a motif throughout my army.

I think I'm going to go back and ink the blue on his shoulder pad though because it is looking too matte.
I've also finally settled on abandoning the armor paint scheme I had been trying out with Elysian Green. I still like how my Deathshroud match my Mortarion pretty well since they are specifically assigned to him, but it was a bit too bright which meant it clashed a bit with all the other bright colors.

1 down, 11 more to go, but I highly doubt I'll get many of them done immediately following this one since I have so many other irons in the fire.

Case in point, the units hot off my assembly line include a small unit of Noise Marines with 3rd party sonic blasters, a trio of Thousand Sons Exalted Sorcerers, another Havocs squad (heavy bolters this time), a Scout Sentinel for my Traitor Guard detachment, and 2 separate units that are pretty much converted from the ground up which are not quite ready to unveil yet.

The first is a 10 man strong unit of chosen based on the same Dark Angels bodies I used for my Havocs.
The second is the remaining 9 Cold One riders I would use as proxy bikers if I actually had any interest in ever playing the game again, but those days are long since past.
The only one I have finished previously is posted somewhere back in the early pages of this blog which shows just how long this unit has been in the works, probably a decade or more!
Now I feel old, not that I didn't already.

Anyway, I also got all the remaining vehicles for my Final Girl scenarios done. They are insanely tiny. The cop car is probably barely over a centimeter long.

Great work, mane. Really loved the purple to flesh tone transition on the krampus and it works well on the wings of the Warp Claw fella as well.

Teeny tiny cop car - or giant motorbike? Bring bring...

As for the armour question, I am a huge fan of breaking away from the idea of every-mini-in-my-army-needs-to-be-exactly-the-same, and multiple shades of green are A-OK in my book, especially if there's a bit of "these dudes are aligned with this other dude so that's why they're the same colour" going on.

I feel you on the hobby ADHD. Whatever direction you find yourself being pulled in, though, I'm excited to see the results.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much for your comment, tzurk. I'm happy to have people like you that are looking forward to more.
I have used that purple to flesh tone pretty much since the start of this army, at least since the I made the vindicator, but technically my Krampus was a bit different. He had a blue base, with a bit of the fang. I actually painted him up with all blue flesh at first since I was trying to get a cold feel for him, but it made it impossible to notice the details so I just fixed it by putting my flesh tones over top of that.

I actually would have returned much earlier if it had been up to me.
I was working diligently on the next 2 warp claws, when my roommates and I were all hit with the most miserable cold so it took an entire week to get back to feeling somewhat normal.

Nevertheless I am here now with the finished results, which includes the first of 2 aspiring champions for this pair of squads.
I gave him a different wing conversion which is a lot more fragile, but seems to be working okay thus far.

I like how the unit is shaping up so I may continue them soon, but I was also thinking of finally painting my first Noise Marine, the one with the guitar. I rushed out to my GW store to get him the day he launched thinking he was a limited edition or something, and still have yet to start him all these years later.
Now that I have my kitbashed noise squad to accompany him that may finally give me the needed impetus.

I'm back already with my aforementioned Noise Marine.

I quite like how he turned out, especially considering he only took a couple days.
I don't normally do freehand stuff, and I can't remember the last time I tried using a transfer.
The latter of which resulted in some glare in the respective photos, but overall it looks pretty good.

Maybe I will return to some more of my warp claws again, but part of me feels like finally starting the Wild Hunt models for my Witcher game.

I actually finished my Warp Claw squad a couple days ago, and I have another whole squad of 6 built that I don't intend to go back to anytime soon, but nevertheless I am proud to have completed this many in a row.
I usually don't like working on batch painting, and there are probably a few bits that could use a touchup, but hopefully you agree that they look good as a group as shown in the last photo.

I have already almost finished my first dino rider, with the exception of the original one years back so that will be coming soon.

In other news I finally dug out my old copy of Dreadfleet which was previously inaccessible. I had only completed a couple ships a very long time ago, but I wasn't painting much at the time so they were pretty basic paintjobs as far as my standards are now.

I am very tempted to work on the ghost ship in the near future since it was always my favorite design of the bunch.

Thanks inmygravenimage, I strive to keep earning your praises. I might need a few days to plan how I am going to do the ships since there are only a handful, but nice to know they have your vote.

In the meantime here is the first of those Cold One Riders I mentioned. This unit is one of a few I have built that will include a banner, but I hate doing freehand, and it takes me forever to decide on a design.
You might notice that I forgot to remove a Khorne symbol hanging from his gun, but I will probably green stuff a quick Nurgle triangle on it or something.

That is an amusing, but also very true observation ShadowsAndDust. Not sure I will be able to unsee that, but it wouldn't be the first questionably named gw unit.

It has been a little while in between updates, and the weather is already starting to foreshadow that time of year when it is too hot and humid to get anything done. With that in mind, I tried to get down to business over the last week.

First here is the 3rd Cold One Calvary to round out the unit, even though this one is technically the champion for a separate 2nd unit if I ever get that far. There are also a couple group shots for added tabletop presence.

Lastly, at least for now, is one more monster for my Witcher Old World.
I've gotten more 40k done this last spell than anticipated so I figured I should get something board game related finished.

Those who have played Wild Hunt will probably recognize her as one of the trio of swamp witches known as the Crones which were another one of my favorite enemy designs.

Thanks, the flesh looks a bit dry and spotty in the pictures, but I think it looks slightly better in person. I ended up going back to my usual flesh color scheme for the others.

It's great to have a fellow Wild Hunt enthusiast here. I think you'll be pleased to see the complete coven now unveiled.

I have been falling behind on my posting lately, but that just means I have more to show off this time.

I present to you the full coven of Crones. The Whispess from before, along with the Weavess, and lastly the coolest of the bunch by far imo, the Brewess. You can tell she is the muscle of their operation.
I took a bit more time with her to try and make sure I could do her justice, but overall they went smoothly and were a joy to paint.

The last mini I have to show off for today means I have finally started to make headway on the Witcher expansion I am most excited for, but I refuse to play it until I have it all painted.
I am referring to the solo mode, called Wild Hunt, so this is the first of the Hounds of the Wild Hunt.
They are the most daunting part though because there are 6 of them, and they come in 3 variations. This is one of the singles, but they also come in pairs and trios all on the same base so really there are about a dozen in total. It's going to be a pain to keep them relatively consistent.

There are also all the major generals of the hunt, including both a mounted and unmounted version of Eredin, if I ever get that far.

Thanks so much for that high praise, Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who is pleased with how they turned out.

While my painting season is now more or less concluded for the time being, I did manage to get a few steps closer to completing my Wild Hunt expansion. I fell behind on posting them again so I'll lead off with the first couple high ranking members of the Hunt, Nithral and Imerlith (The former has the big axe, with the latter using the giant club/mace).
I realized after the first hound that adding a bit of my snow basing material was better and easier than just painting snow manually.

I also finished a couple more of the hounds so that just leaves 3 more of those, a sorcerer which I have already gotten started, and the king of the hunt himself, Eredin. Eredin also came with a much bigger alternate mounted version for being a day 1 backer, but I probably won't start that anytime soon.

Thanks a lot inmygravenimage. It took a couple tries, but I worked out a decent scheme for ice using a blue contrast and a random kind of aquamarine paint I was given way back. It also helps immensely when games come with good presculpted bases.

I have one more big update for you all before packing it in until the heat dies down.

I am proud to say I managed to complete the whole wild hunt solo expansion for my Witcher game. There is still quite a few minis for it left, in fact I am only exactly halfway done now.
Some of the remaining hounds came out a bit darker than the rest, but they're close enough I guess.

Speaking of hounds, I even squeezed in one extra monster not related to this expansion, a Barghest, which is basically a ghost dog. I didn't get him as bright and vibrant as some of the reference images I was shooting for, but I got tired of fiddling with him so he will have to suffice.

More importantly there are the remaining two generals, Caranthir and the King of the Hunt himself Eredin.
I really like how Caranthir turned out, he is the sorcerer with the staff.
Eredin on the other hand was a bit tricky to get right, but like I said I still have the mounted version to take crack at some point down the line.

Even though I hate not getting much painting done in the summer months since my backlog is so massive with more games on the way, I am looking forward to actually playing more of these board games and going back to some other hobbies for a while. I am almost done reading the entire series of Witcher novels for example.

I hope anyone following me will stick around long enough to see my eventual return and happy painting to you guys in the meantime.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
I am finally back after taking the summer off from painting. I can't say how fast I will be able to ramp things back up again, but I am happy to say I have a bit of a pre-Halloween treat for anyone who is still interested in my work.

I received a few more kickstarter pledges since my last post to add to ye old backburner.
- Tainted Grail: Kings of Ruin
- Waste Knights: Beyond the Horizon
- Death May Die: Fear of the Unknown
- Final Girl Series 2 which shipped separately ahead of Series 3 which will ship out sometime next year probably

While I am pretty psyched about all of them, even though I never finished playing the original Tainted Grail campaign let alone all the stretch goals, but I figured Final Girl was a great place to start since it is October plus each scenario only requires a few models at a time.

So to kick things off here is their version of The Thing, which is actually the final stage of 3 so I still have to finish the tiny one and the middle stage.
Not too bad, but he looks he would fit in with some poxwalkers without much notice. Which reminds me that I still haven't painted that unit of mine yet.

I also got this horror level marker done. It is not exactly a creature or enemy, but as a lifelong Jason fan I would assume you will see why it is a special piece for me. I had bought a 3d print of Jason previously, but the scale turned out to be too small so I doubt I will ever actually use it.

Hopefully I will have more to show in the not too distant future.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome buddy. I always appreciate your loyalty throughout all these years. I could never match your painting output, not that it is a competition, but I do what I can.

I actually meant to post this next bit several days ago, but I got sidetracked.
So here are the other two stages of the legally distinct "thing". Now he comes in small, medium, and large - sort of like a pizza.

Normally things don't turn out this glossy, which is suitable for body horror like this, but since I use a matte varnish most of the time it isn't quite as extreme now.

One of the girls for this scenario is clearly inspired by Ripley, there is even a tiny power-loader mech, but for now I am just about done working on my first character for the new Waste Knights expansion so she will have to wait.
Part of me wants to get to some of the Dreadfleet stuff I dug out before the summer, but it is harder to work on stuff that I never intend to play with, especially with so many new arrivals.

As always thank you for commenting. I know for me personally, I don't actually engage with much social media, but sometimes there are "lurkers" that check in without saying much at times like me.

I know everyone is dealing with so much these days it is hard to find time for everything you would like to do. I was hoping after taking so much time off during the summer I could get more done when I did come back, but at least for right now things seem to mostly get more trying with an ongoing crisis, really more than one frankly, but that is why I appreciate just how nice and long this community has stuck around.

I actually did finish one more model before things started getting out of hand, and I am still looking forward to the next time I feel up to getting some painting done, but it might be a while even though I just got back to it.

Anyway, with all that having been said, here is the first character from the new Waste Knights expansion I have to share.
Beyond the Horizon is an expansion focusing on expanding the map of post apocalyptic Australia to the surrounding coast lands and add more scenarios, which is a great idea for this game.
The scenarios are super in depth, but weren't that many.

So this player character is some sort of aquatic mutant. I have always had trouble with blue skin. It can be hard to get things highlighted enough without being too light or dark, but I know I am too much of a perfectionist a lot of the time. Actually my big Pincer Demon started out in a blue color scheme, but it just wasn't working so I went back to my usual kind of flesh tone.
So she turned out fine in this case.

Nice work. She would make a great Doreen or Kehana character in 50 Fathoms. It's an RPG from the creator of Deadlands, set in a fantasy pirate-centric world. So, they have fish people.

Backtracking just a bit, the dino-riders from the previous page are awesome!

Hey guys, I am back once again. Let me just say it is great to return not just in general, but to see more nice comments to remind me that you also enjoy what I do here. I am proud of almost all my minis in some fashion or another, but it has taken a long time to get to this point.
Normally I don't get hung up on statistics, but I will admit it is nice to see my number of views has now crossed the threshold into 6 digits so that doesn't happen everyday.

That sounds really cool. I actually love traditional RPG's like D&D and others, but I doubt I will ever have the time to be a full on dungeon master myself. Pirate stuff is definitely one of my favorite settings though. I am really looking forward to a certain pirate video game called Flint: Treasure of Oblivion that is set to release very soon which kind of has similar gameplay.

Btw once I eventually go back to painting some more 40k, too many recent board games that haven't gotten any attention right now, I am looking forward to finishing off the rest of my Dino Riders. The raptors are still a bit tricky to get the right brightness and definition with such tiny scales, but the other 7 are all built and the riders are all slightly different from one another.

 PaddyMick wrote:

Hi PaddyMick, thanks a lot for letting me know your favorites. I also have more warp claws built and undercoated in the backlog, but I was quite pleased with how the decimator came out. I am really tempted to get a couple war dogs for him to hang out with, but I haven't even started my other Chaos Knight which is a much bigger project. Sometimes I like building stuff even more than painting since the progress goes way faster.
I try to use a mix of gloss (or satin like you said) and matte paints. I actually only own like 3 or 4 contrast paints since I think they look TOO wet, but this blue on her is one of those and I have always used inks for some things. It kind of depends on what the model is so I tend to use drier looking colors for furs and whatnot, as slimey as I can get for some of the grosser stuff, and a lot of in between.

Anyway I did manage to get back to painting a bit just the other day. I technically started my first demon for season 3 of Death May Die, but I am not sure where I am going with him yet so instead I switched back to this Final Girl character named Kate. She is for the episode where you fight the Thing creature at the artic research station so now I can get around to trying that one soon, and she was completed in just a couple sessions.

I just recently got a new camera on my phone so you might notice an increase in detail. Even though sometimes being super zoomed in can highlight small flaws, I like the results. I finally gave up on balancing paper as a backdrop so I just used one of board game boxes instead which sort of fits.
It's not exactly a fancy setup, but it works.

I intend to do more painting soon so all in all I wasn't gone that long I suppose, but I am trying to just go with the flow since I think a lot of painters understand how the more unfinished projects you have the more overwhelming it can get. Nevertheless, I will keep you all updated.

I am back sooner than expected.
With so many board games to get to, I was realizing how long it might be before I have a chance to go back to painting any 40k, and frankly sometimes 40k is easier to paint since my army color scheme is pretty established at this point.
Board games tend to take even longer because I have to figure out how I am going to do everything for the first time again and again.

Long story short, I managed to complete these 3 Traitor Guardsmen that I have had for so long I forget which box set I originally got them from, or ebay in this case.
They painted up remarkably smoothly, I even went back and touched up a couple things after taking the photos like adding some elysian green to lighten up all the grenades, and I improved the unit champion's skull mask by trying to add some very fine lines to simulate cracks or teeth.

Let me know what you think of how they look as a group, even though the rest of the unit is SUPER old, like 15 years so the paint looks a bit faded on them unsurprisingly.

I don't know exactly what I will move on to next, but I figured anyone looking in would appreciate some old school warhammer even though my board game stuff also has some admirers. I have a lot of other units picked out I may or may not get to soon, but that dread fleet ghost ship is still in the back of my mind crying out for some attention.

Glad to hear you like them too. I think this next one turned out even better.

I enjoyed working on the cultists/guard so much that I am keeping this 40k train rolling with a model I have been looking forward to for quite a while, not that there is a shortage of those.
He is the unit champion for my Khorne Jackhals. He kind of reminds me of Bane from Batman with his venom tubes.

His face didn't want to focus right in my new camera, maybe it was because of the helmet I don't know, but I like how the skin turned out especially. I also tried to give the venom tanks a bit of a bubbling liquid look to them, but they are very matte looking in these shots because I was once again going to put on the gloss to them I after my normal varnish.

It has been a long time since I have tried to do a large model so I actually just started giving the first paint to my other Chaos Knight I have had half built since he was first released to stores. I may be biting off more than I can chew, but I wanted to make sure I hadn't lost any of his pieces.

The first step is more or less done which is the custom cockpit driver which will only be partially visible, but I have to glue him in completely before finishing the rest of the build because otherwise there would be no way to get inside of him. He is of the Nurgle variety so he is very gooey and disgusting.
I will try to keep at it him and have more to post about it next time.

Very grimdark and 'Khorny" if you will. I used the Jackhals as a base for some Blood Pact minis a while back, and the necks and heads were the most annoying parts, although I loved the running poses compared to a lot of more static guard poses. The reds and purples with the snow effect are smashing.

Thanks a bunch Cap'n Facebeard. The purple seems to be a popular choice for flesh. It is the same recipe I have used pretty much since the beginning of this army. At first it was supposed to be for demonic flesh, but I actually use it a lot of the time even for more or less normal humans.

Hi blockade23, I am glad you like him too. I always have trouble getting the right mix of shading and with the thickness of the highlights, but this one really came together quickly.
I have so many projects I have been bouncing between, but I am still tempted to work on more of these Jackhals. I actually replaced a lot of their heads because I really didn't like most of them.
I used a mix of demonette heads for the women and a few others for the guys so I think it will really improve the whole unit with more of a mad max feel if I ever manage to finish them.

Btw I also really have to work on my Genestealer cult bikers because I bought them for their mad Max aesthetic as well. The only change I have been slowly making to them is to attempt to give them dreads so they look like the bikers from Fury Road, but that is another really tricky thing to sculpt. They tend to come out too thick and make their heads look too big, but I think they will still look cool.

Anyway here are the last couple things I have managed to get done.
First here is the cockpit driver for my other Chaos Knight. It doesn't actually look that garishly colorful in person, but sometimes it is hard to get the flash on my camera to get the right amount of brightness. I might change the blue pipes to yellow to try and tone it down a bit.
Either way I am putting him aside for a while just because 1- he is going to take a super long time and 2- I want to add a bit of sculpting to Nurgle him up a bit, but my green stuff is super old and needs to be replaced.

So I moved on to finally after all these years going back and fixing my old Beserker champion.
His old weapon was kind of a mess of spare parts and he used to be on a tiny base. He looks a lot better proportioned now with his giant cape. The one thing I fixed afterwards is his little hand was missing a highlight. It makes me think of that character from Scary Movie 2. "You have to grab my little hand! It's the strong one!"

The whole unit has capes that sculpted myself to make them more unique. I intend to move the rest of them to 32mm bases, but I haven't decided whether I will try to clip them off their old bases or just glue them on top and try and fill them in like I did with this guy.

I'm glad you like where I am going with him, but just to clarify, the pilot is pretty much done other than that one change.
I was talking about sculpting on all the rest of the knight's outside. I usually do stuff like barnacles, boils, fungus, stuff that is not to hard to form.
This is part of the reason why I take so long to do my tanks. I still think they look kind of boring when they are just stock. The one exception is my Knight Astarius because he was so freaking expensive I didn't want to cover up any of that resin or spend even more time on him.

I just have a small update for you all today, but I am happy to say I finished the first mini from my new box of Death May Die.
He is from the graphic novel that comes with a few other things so I was happy to snag a copy.

Hi guys,
I have another Jackhal finished today to show you all.

As I said before I switched most of their heads since the original ones were pretty out of place looking to me. We will see how long it takes me to get the rest of the unit done.
Speaking of which I am also almost done rebasing the rest of my Beserkers on their new 32mm bases, and they already look better so I will repost them along with the champion once that part is done.

I am trying a new method for my basing since for the longest time it would seem fine until days or weeks later I would notice it was peeling up and separating at the edges which is infuriating when it keeps happening over and over.
Let me know if this has ever happened to you and any ideas on how to prevent it.
So I am seeing if taking pictures, varnishing, and then basing will make a difference. We will see, but that is why it is missing from the pictures.

I also assembled the rest of my Batman the Mini Game stuff last night. I don't have that many, but there is my Killer Croc, Harley Quinn w/ Hyenas, Heath Ledger Joker w/ goons, and the tiny little Mad Hatter himself sitting on his big comfy chair. I doubt they will get painted for a while, but I am getting better at using my new super glue.

Thanks buddy, looking forward to spending another year showing off my work to you and all in 2025.
Like I said it might be a while before I get to the batman stuff since they are not undercoated. I don't do much spraying in the winter, but I did undercoat a lot of warhammer stuff before the snow started falling in preparation.

Merry Christmas everyone! I actually have multiple things to show off today since I have been multitasking between different projects so this seems like as good an occasion as any to unveil some of it.

First to start off with 40k here is a shot of my rebased beserkers, although there is at least one in the back that is completely blocked since I should have taken more time to get another angle.
They are super old so the capes don't seem as impressive as they did way back then, but I think the 32mm bases give them much better presence as they say.

I am also just putting the snow on my old squad of plague marines from the same time period so that is all my rebasing done and dusted, but I don't know if it is worth photographing them too.

Next I splurged and got a set of War Dogs to put alongside my Knights and Decimator so here is a WIP shot of the first one with a bit of paint on my knight. I got my new green stuff and I plan to magnetize the war dog arms to maximize my options.

Speaking of building, I was in the mood to dig into my Creature Caster backlog so the other day I finally built my possessed dragon, wings not attached yet, after over 6 years since that kickstarter originally arrived. If I ever get to paint him I was thinking a purple color scheme.
Let me know what you think of him since it is a unique design I don't know how many people have seen before.

And lastly, for some actual painting progress I just finished the first model from Season 2 of Death May Die, the one I have already had for years (each kickstarter is split into 2 season boxes so I have 1-4, and they actually just did another campaign for 5&6 which is insane).

Anyway he is called the Dimensional Shambler, and he is my favorite mini from the whole box since he is totally jacked, plus a different version of him was used as a boss in the Cthulhu videogame for ps4.
I quite like how he turned out. The art shows him as kind of an off grey color. I usually hate painting grey since it SO dull and doesn't really look that great so I started off with a dark purple base and used a death guard green as a mid tone.

I don't know if I will manage to finish anything else before the new year, but I will probably at least build something over the next few days.
Stay tuned!

Happy new year everyone!

My first post of 2025 is devoted to a bit more Final Girl season 2.
Other than the little power-loader I forgot to undercoat, this is everything needed for the Evolmorph scenario which is essentially an homage to the Alien movies.
So here is the full size alien, along with his larval and slightly less tiny versions, and the final girl who is obviously a stand in for Sigourney Weaver.

Hopefully the alien doesn't look to lizard like with his pale green skin. I put a gloss varnish on him after taking the photos to try and give a sticky sheen. The card art shows him as grey with a red carapace, but as I said before I tend to avoid painting grey.

I think my Sigourney turned out pretty good though.

Now it is back to the drawing board to try and decide what to work on next when time permits.

Ahoy-hoy everyone!

I am actually pretty pumped about this update so hopefully you get a kick out of it too.
I have mentioned at least a couple times that I wanted to work on my newly rediscovered copy of Dreadfleet, but most of all the Ghost Ship because it is my favorite out of the whole box.
So needless to say I wanted to paint it well enough to do it justice in my mind, and I think it came out well.

Its ethereal nature means it is quite monochromatic so it is really only about 5 colors, not including the water, but I love the model and how it is basically hollow.

The only thing that I went back to touchup was the little brazier on top since I forgot to add the yellowish green to match up with the same color on the underside.
Also I had to add a bit of green stuff putty around the middle mast since it didn't fit right, and I accidently shaved a bit too much away. This ended up with it too loose so hopefully it is sturdy enough now, and I don't think it is super noticeable.

I don't know when I will eventually work on the other ships, but I can rest a bit easier now knowing my favorite one is complete after all this time.

Thank you kindly to both of you for the compliments. It is nice to hear I am not the only one somewhat chuffed about it.
Part of me wants to work on some of the other ships at some point, but we will see how things go.

I have a few things to show off today starting with a second character for my Waste Knights expansion.
His name is Mad Ash, and he is a cook, but it seems they mean of the narcotic variety rather than the culinary variety. Although I imagine he could use his flamethrower as a makeshift BBQ.
I am itching to try out a game so I can test him out as well as some of the new scenarios.

Next I did a bit of unplanned undercoating since that unpainted powerloader for Final Girl that was bugging me is now done. Also in the same batch was one of my new war dogs and a few other things so I now have the option of starting to paint that Batman stuff I mentioned before.

Lastly for now, I managed to finish a 3rd Jackhal, this one being one of the females I head swapped with a demonette.
I am still loving the dynamic poses this unit has. Please ignore the lack of basing again moving forward. Once the unit is closer to complete I will go back for a group shot.

Nice to see you back blockade23, and thank you for the nice request. It is funny you should ask for a group shot because I had just taken one of my Jackhals last night now that the unit is half complete.

I don't really have a good spot for bigger photos, but here is the shelf where the Traitor Guardsmen section of my army resides. You might also be able to see beside them peeking out of the blackness are a unit of Death Korps, 2 Leman Russes I have had practically forever, a Sentinel, and my Bikers if I ever work up the courage to start them.
There are also a few more cultists not shown just because I haven't finished painting some alterations I made quite a while ago.
My plague zombies are in a different section alongside my poxwalkers also waiting for some attention.

As for terrain, I have no plans. I have never been good at constructing terrain, and it takes up a lot of space even if I wanted to buy some. I am more or less at max capacity as it is.

Next up are some close up shots of those last couple Jackhals. I pretty much never paint banners because I don't have much freehand experience so I kept the banner design pretty simple. Seeing how Jackhals are not really Nurgle-themed I took the symbol for my army that I sometimes put on shoulder pads and turned it sideways.
It could easily be mistaken for the Chaos Undivided symbol which is kind of intentional, but it is technically the letters W and L combined from my own alphabet of Chaos Runes.

As a bonus I finished another demon from Season 2 of my Death May Die. It is just a minor foe called a Tcho Tcho. Not sure how I feel about him or the fact that there are 4 more left, but he still looks better than he did grey.

The Jackhals have been pretty fun to paint so I am kind of tempted to keep going to finish off the unit, but I will probably move on for the time being.
As a side-note, I was actually super close to buying more models I don't need when I saw new Death Korps army box set, but then the news came out that new Emperor's Children are on the way and I am torn between them. Decisions, decisions...

I am back again with a bit more 40k progress.

Here are the few other cultists I mentioned I was fixing up so they are not anything too crazy, but I'd say they are a noticeable improvement from before. I switched a couple heads, some arms, and repainted their pants and torsos a bit.
This brings my cultists back up to an even 20.

Since the cultists/ Jackhals have been going pretty well I also have the first of my Death Korps to show as well.
There are a couple touchups still needed, his right hand got smudged and his tube coming from the face came out too dark. I had it more grey, but it was a bit sloppy so it could use a 2nd attempt because the black looks a bit unfinished.
Also I put deathclaw brown highlight to his backpack to lighten it it up a bit.

I had originally used the same green color scheme from the rest of my cultists, but it didn't work well with the trench coat so I changed it to the more official looking bluish grey from the store website.
Although I considered getting more Death Korps, for now I am thinking of them as just being the stormtrooper type unit for my traitor guard.

I'm glad you like him too. I was pretty pleased with the results, although I'm not sure when I will continue working on the death korps.

I took a bit of a break from painting the last couple weeks.
I had previously finished another investigator for my Death May Die, this one is from the same graphic novel expansion as the cultist with the big tentacle, but I wanted to have a bit more than that to show.

The other thing I have for today is another addition to my Traitor Guardsmen, a Sentinel. I rarely work on my army's tanks because I never know what to do with all the big flat panels so this was a bit of a test for those bigger models.
I am still not entirely convinced it went well since the caliban green doesn't show well in pictures, but all in all it didn't go too badly I suppose. I was thinking of maybe put decals on the thigh armor plates, but we will see.

I got a couple more kits since my last update as well, sisters repentia (which I am still trying to find some decent head replacements for, but I thought they would fit in nicely with my Jackhals) and a field ordnance battery. I really should have waiting on the latter for the death korps one to come out separately, but I figured that might not be for quite a while and I caved.
If I could just get a couple of my Mad Max bikers and maybe a Leman Russ done at some point in the future my Guardsmen section of the army would be mostly finished.

As a side note, I also purchased and assembled a new small display case a couple days ago so my other ones won't be quite so overflowing so that is also nice.

I haven't exactly been painting at a steady pace the last couple weeks, but after several good sized sessions I managed to finish another mid-sized project that has been a long time coming.

This is one of two Foetid Bloat Drones I have had laying around for years. With the obvious addition of some Plague Drone wings to spice it up a bit, I think it blends in well with my Mortarion and all the winged Warp Talons I have in my army.
I snipped off a couple of the spikes from the one remaining jet engine so it doesn't look so much like it is going to hurt its own wings from flying quite as much.

I had to go back and redo the little tank on his back though as I initially decided to mix up its coloring as shown here, but in the end it looks much better in the same Caliban, Castellan, with a yellow green highlight as the other armor bits. I also forgot the wound on his fleshy side so it is now a dark red.

I also spent some time building my Spider Demon, Lady of Depravity, plus a Zombie Dragon from Creature Caster. The Spider Demon is so named because of some pincers coming out of her back, which they both have, but is basically just a giant Daemonette.
I hesitate to show them off since the Spider and Dragon are still in the earliest stages of painting and the LoD is excessively nsfw. She reminds me of what we used to call the boob worm, steed of Slaanesh, mixed with an Alien movie, except it actually has 10 pairs of breasts down its snake-like body whereas the old one only had a few I think.
Even Slaanesh itself might raise an eyebrow at it so I doubt I will get around to painting that one in particular anytime soon.

Thanks for the continued encouragement and support. My thread wouldn't be the same without you

I finished this guy a few days ago, a Tech Priest Dominus.
I figure even evil demon engines and chaos knights need a tune up from time to time, and he fits in with those scantily clad cyborg women I finished long ago from Wargame Exclusive.
I recently picked up a servitor to go with them from the same company and I have a squad of Skitarii Rangers to paint at some point so together they form a nice little contingent.

He is nothing that special color scheme wise, even that bit of freehand edging around his hood is commonly used, but he turned out pretty good imho. I was getting frustrated with how many attempts his blue plasma type gun it took.

We will see when and what I get up to next. Until then.

Ya it certainly helps, but I appreciate how consistent it has been throughout. I think if I had a trademark style it might be bold colors as it has been remarked on a few times.

Maybe it is the bad lighting in my apartment, but I find that once something is sitting on the shelf it can be hard to pick out the details when everything is near black, especially since I use a black undercoat 99% of the time. I try to balance it out though, otherwise my evil army of doom and demons would start looking too cartoonish, but like so many things it's a fine line sometimes.

 Tek wrote:

Thanks a lot for saying so Tek. The idea for the wings is stolen from someone else's post I saw several years ago, but I think it works well too. I can't say how well the wings will hold up if it ever gets knocked or dropped though since gluing wings like that is a really irksome process getting them to stick.
The scheme took a while to come up with even though it is similar to most of my army, but the trick seemed to be leaving enough of the big front plate just a flat color so it didn't look too busy.

I am pleased to share this next piece with you guys since I had been working up the confidence to start it since I got it from the kickstarter sometime last year. My love for pirates seen previously with the bit of Dreadfleet I've shown will give you a hint of why.

Her name from the website is Catalina, and other than fact that I forgot to give her eyebrows before taking the pictures I think she came out about as good as I could have hoped for. It is a bit hard to detect, but I even gave her eyes a tiny tiny dot of white to try and give them a bit of a reflection.
There were like 5 other pirate ladies to choose from, both busts and 75mm full figures, but she was the only one I chose to try and not spend too much.
One of my friends said that she almost looks cell shaded, but that was kind of a happy accident.

I have one other bust in my collection from a different kickstarter if I ever get around to it, but for now I started working on a couple more Death Korps troops. As always we will see what I end up finishing next since I tend to bounce around.

I'm glad you like her too. I'm surprised in all your various works there isn't a bust in there somewhere. I'm sure you would manage to do well whenever you do attempt one.

I finished another batch of my Death Korps a couple days ago so in total I am up to 4 now.
To fit in with them I also finished my commander for the whole Traitor Guard detachment, which is really just a slightly modified Tempestor Prime. It has been a long time since I have given a name to a character's base, but I should probably bestow one up on him. I am thinking maybe Silco after the villain of Arcane in season one.

I think the thunderhawk blue coat works well on him too, maybe not as good classic black, but I usually avoid trying to highlight black where possible. His breastplate was a bit too splotchy from the ink I put on though so I went back over it with some more dark silver after.
Also the other pair of troopers were missing the highlight on their hands in case they looked strangely dark.

I tried starting to paint a big tentacled Elder One for my new season of Cthulhu Death May Die, but I have to go back to the drawing board on that one. The example has this weird pattern where the tentacles keep changing color the closer to the ends you get, but it just looks weird so I think I may end up just making it all one color with highlights like a normal monster.
It might not be as mind-shatteringly bizarre, but it will hopefully still be creepy enough and help preserve my sanity a bit.

I remember you saying something similar when I completed my Death Korps test model, but thank you all the same. Someday I will finish the rest of the unit.

For now I decided to go back to a bit of my board games. So here is the first thing I completed from my new seasons of Cthulhu, specifically the scenario based on the story Dreams in the Witch House.
I had to go back and clean up the bit of shawl or whatever coming off her shoulder and a bit on her cap, but this is pretty much how she looks. To go alongside the witch is her familiar Brown Jenkins who is a pretty simple model, but at least now I can say that box hasn't gone untouched.

I also finished this creepy nurse from another episode of Final Girl that takes place in asylum.

Thanks again. I may go back to touch up her clothing a bit eventually. I saw from someone else's paint job that part of her torn dress is actually a bra so it could add a bit more contrast.

I have been absent a while since I have been slacking when it comes to painting, but I have a few things I neglected to post, and I am happy to report I just now completed my first Elder One for the Fear of the Unknown so I will get some pics of him later.

For now here is another small scenario specific Cthulhu demon, although I have no idea how he fits into the mythos.
His name is Hypnos, and apparently he is also a Greek God so he is pretty much just a well chiseled guy in a toga.

Next up are the Final Girl for that asylum episode along with a creepy hospital bed, and another girl that goes with the Terror From Above episode that is entirely based on the swarm of killer birds from The Birds.
The latter doesn't look that great, but I wasn't super concerned about her and as always the tiny girls can be a bit tricky.

I appreciate the compliments my friend. The bed was a really quick job for how well it came out. I have spent more time than I would have liked in the hospital so it wasn't really something I focused on.

Thanks for the high praise and welcome. My conversions are pretty few and far between these days, but I do have some more little conversions like my poxwalkers and lots of bikers still to paint at some point.

I wanted to post this Cthulhu Elder One, who goes by the suitably incomprehensible name Tsathoggua, a few days ago, but try as I might it was a massive struggle to get some decent photos that I felt actually reflected how he looks in person.

When I look at him here he looks colorful enough while being somewhat muted, but the flash made him look he was in an almost supersaturated technicolor for some reason. Maybe that goes for all my photos since I got my new camera, but I never noticed it to such an extent. If I turn the flash off you can barely see anything for how dark it looks.
Anyway long story short, I kinda had to desaturate the pics just a tad to get them more normal looking because I just got sick of retaking them.

Your range of colours are superb. Disgusting, but superb.

You're too kind my friend, but I quite enjoy the thought that I can still impress a veteran painter with so much accomplished work such as you. While I do have quite a few colors to work with, sometimes I find myself falling back on the same ones a lot. I actually kind of regret not going closer to the card art of that last Elder One which is less colorful and more grey, but I didn't want to go back and fiddle with it too much.

I have gotten a couple things done over the last couple weeks. First off is an addon for my Tainted Grail board game that is a campsite in 3 parts that expands as you upgrade it. Not a lot to be said about the model itself, but TG was actually my first experience playing a kickstarter game. It has a lot of RPG mechanics in a choose your own adventure while exploring a cursed Arthurian kind of landscape. I got somewhat far into it, but it has had a 2.0 rules update to it since then so it should be fun to give it a second try before I get into its stretch goal campaigns and the sequel, Tainted Grail: Kings of Ruin.

Secondly, and more impressively, I have for you another Elder One for Death May Die called Ithaqua, the Wind Walker.
He/She is very long and spindly with a sort of twisting in the wind kind of texture.

I also did a couple of minions for the previous Elder One, but they are nothing really to write home about since I didn't spend much time at all on them. They are shown as kind of an oily smoky blob so they are mostly just some dark contrast paint for that oily sheen.

My area is starting to go through the first round of summer weather already so my progress will probably slow down quite a bit after I finish up this last medium sized demon for my Cthulhu, but I counted that I have painted nearly 50 minis since I went back to it last Halloween so I feel that is decent enough to be satisfied with for a while.

In the meantime, I couldn't resist all the recent Emperors Children release's so I have been having fun assembling their combat patrol.

I had previously made some of my own Noise Marines from spare parts and some 3rd party sonic blasters & backpacks, but because I used super old legs and torsos the scale creep was too hard to ignore.
I was going to use those parts in conjunction with some of the new tormentor bodies to make a closer approximation, but in the end I just bit the bullet and bought a box of noise marines to have them look less out of place.
The noise marines must be popular because they were sold out on the gw storefront and just about every online FLGS I could find in my country.

Very cool, especially your very Mignola take on Ithaqua .

Thanks once again, and for sticking around this whole season's worth of painting. The heat wave here was followed with a week of cold so I am soaking it in for however long it lasts. Also that is an interesting way to describe my Ithaqua since I never really got into comics so it is all unknown to me. The closest I got was that I still have a soft spot for Todd Mcfarlane's Spawn.

This week for you I have that other Death May Die demon I mentioned along with 3 accompanying polar bearish demons that together make up the Horror in the Museum scenario.
The big fly guy, Rhan-Tegoth, seems like he would fit in well with a lot of my Nurgle stuff, even though some parts of him came out pretty bright. I should have placed something next to him for scale, but he is about 3.5 inches tall to the tips of his wings so pretty beefy.
The bears are basically all one color so nothing that complicated, but I will say that I originally started with a brown base coat which made them look too dark and dirty so I went back over it with a solid coat of Hobrot Hide which helped quite a bit.

That just leaves The Color Out of Space and I would be finished with the stretch goal scenarios for season 3, but it is actually one of the biggest models in the box so I was going to leave it for now and switch back to a little bit of 40k before I hang up my brushes soon.

Thanks again, sorry for the late reply. I always try to have something new to show, and I hadn't had a chance to get down to business for quite a while. Looking forward to sharing more with you.

Happy Halloween everyone!
I have been trying to get back into the swing of painting after another long summer off, and I am happy to report that I have my first model of the season complete to show to you, and on my favorite holiday to boot.

It has been a long time since I have gone back to my Middle Earth armies. I picked up a pair of resin Hill Trolls just before the annual GW price hike since I couldn't resist their detailed sculpts. I wanted to also get the new Lord of Poxes before the increase, but not surprisingly everywhere here was severely understocked so it was sold out before I even knew of the release and has remained so for months.

Anyway I am pretty pleased with how this first one turned out, though I don't think he looks quite so blue in person. Hopefully his counterpart won't be too far behind. I have a desire to follow them up by attempting to paint my Witch King on Fell Beast, but that will be a challenging project so we will see how far I get on that.

In addition to the Hill Troll, I have improved upon a model that I had completed quite a while ago, but had been bugging me ever since I put on his giant wings. Some of you may recall this big demon, the Lord of Virulence from Creature Caster.

He did have a set of wings that came with the model, but they were a really ugly sculpt compared to the rest of him. So after going through my bits box I ended up putting the biggest wings I owned on him, hive tyrant wings I believe, but I could only get them to stay on in a super awkward position. They were way too close together and upright with a bad forward lean that in my opinion distracted from the whole focal point of the model.

So after a few days of green stuffing, it is hard to make layered stuff like this without screwing up what is drying around it, I had a pretty decent set of barnacles to take the place of the severed stumps. I like him a lot better now.

I am not planning on setting a blistering pace anytime in the near future, even by my standards, but there will be more to come at some point so please keep an eye out for me.

Aw I appreciate you saying so. You've been a fixture as long as I have been here so it has been quite the journey. With how long I have been painting hopefully I continue to improve, but conversely with how long some of my breaks are as long as my quality doesn't backslide too much I'm happy.

I'm back with the second hill troll along with a couple shots of the boys together and based.
I had a bit of trouble getting the right color mix on the underbelly as well as the tattered robes of the 2nd one. I originally used Mournfang and Deathclaw which looked fine on troll #1, but something about the way it was coming together made me darken them back down on #2 so hopefully they don't look too dissimilar.

I forgot to mention that my latest board game arrival over the summer was wave 2A of Middara. The 2nd half was itself split into halves so with any luck wave 2B, which is the actual conclusion of story, will manage to find me sometime next year. Not sure when I will get stuck back into that. I have been playing more of the Rogue Trader video game recently so I feel my 40k shelves calling out for some attention.

This week I have some 40k progress for you all.
I already sprained my reconstructed wrist falling down with the first real winter snow here, but despite that I have managed to get quite a bit of painting in.

First up is my first non-demon Slaanesh model, other than that one noise marine from a while back, the Lord Exultant. I had him half done during the summer so it feels good to complete him.

I should preface this post by restating that I have been dissatisfied lately with a lot of the pictures from my newer phone. Maybe it is the lighting, but I have been noticing how oversaturated the shots look whereas the models themselves actually look decent in person. This lord made the issue even more pronounced since he is even more colorful than a lot of my other stuff.
So I ended up taking some photos with my old phone from my workstation. This worked a lot better, but I do apologize for the massive clutter as there is nowhere to set up a backdrop or anything there.

I was originally going to make his cape blue or possibly a bluish white, but in the end I went for something more approaching the color scheme from the warhammer store page for him.

I also 99% finished a couple of plague marines, and I already have the next two basecoated, but as I have said before I rarely take the time to finish most batch painting.
I have since changed the fly looking shoulder pad's rim to a bone color. It was a different shade of green than the rest of the armor, but I thought it still blended in/clashed too much and I dotted their eyes yellow (plus a bit of green stuff I had to join the one shoulder with that is now done.

The armor recipe actually has 4 colors to it, but because I use the greenshade ink to darken it down and give a bit of sheen it tends to obscure that. It is the way I have done my death guard armor since way back when I started this army, and although it is not perfect I still prefer it to the more traditional recipe I tried for a while with my deathshroud bodyguard and biolugus putrifier (it was too lime green for my taste). Also I wanted consistency for the troop section at least.
The position of the nurgling is a bit awkward, but it was kinda the only way to fit them both on.

These next couple plague marines took a bit longer than expected since I put a bit too much ink on one and took a while to come back to it. A lot of my paints have once again thickened up all over again so it's a struggle sometimes, , but I think they turned out okay in the end.

The plasma gun in particular almost broke me since I painted him all in one piece and the angle was very tricky. I think this is the first one I have done blue which doesn't really line up with the neon green other ones, but there is already so much green with these guys.

I picked up some more red paint to replace my old ones so I may get back to my not-Bloodthirster from Creature Caster at some point. It would be nice to finish at least one bigger project over the winter. For now though, I was going to start my Noxious Blightbringer to go along with this unit.
Once I get it up to a full 7 I will get a group shot of them together and based.

Some really lovely colour work on display on this page. The purple undertones for the flesh on Hypnos are gorgeous. Really loving the striated look for the Death Guard too - it's giving equal parts infected wound and bloated/blighted watermelon, both good vibes for worshippers of Nurgle. Thankyou for sharing!

It is my pleasure to share my work with you guys, and it is even better to return to see your comments. A few people have remarked on the purple base coat for my flesh. I guess it was a good choice for a basis considering it is a pretty simple recipe. I would have never thought of calling it watermelon armor, but I suppose that is true so I am glad you like that design decision.

I really appreciate your enthusiasm for my army. I know you're always down for some board game stuff too whenever I actually go back down that rabbit hole, but there is always something special about seeing more finished Chaos take hold on my shelves.

It is late as I post this, but I am pretty chuffed with how my Noxius Blightbringer turned out so I decided to post him right away. Of course like everything else he look better once he is based, but I still prefer getting my shots in before the varnishing.
Just before I started to work on him a brainwave struck me and I remembered I had a spare head I really wanted to use from my giant Glottkin model which is also crying out for some attention. I think a good headswap can really give a model a unique look for being such a simple conversion. I gave him a tiny extra highlight to his face with one more flesh tone than usual to make it stand out a bit more.
The last Plague Marine champion I finished had a horn on his backpack which sticks out to me as an eyesore since I did a pretty subpar job on it.
I tried to take my time and compensate for that with this hero model, and I think the massive horn holding the bell is the best part about this paintjob. I never quite know what colors to go with for my nurglings besides just more green so here is a pinkish one I guess.

It seems every time I tell myself I going to work on something big like that fell beast or not Bloodthirster, I change my mind by the time I finish my current project. Now I am considering some Age of Sigmar for once, namely my Harbinger of Decay that has been sitting undercoated for quite a while. Unfortunately I lost his little bar that goes across his horse's rump, should have glued it on to begin with.
He would look good to go along with my newest expenditure...

I have really tried to stop buying new models, but I have always wanted some version of Warhammer Quest to give me some GW I could actually play solo so when I heard Dark Water is Nurgle based I gave in and preordered it. At least I got it from a shop with the standard 15% discount so the price wouldn't be quite as obscene.
Should be exciting when that arrives in a couple weeks. I actually think the big demon final boss for it is one of the weakest models included in it, but the rest looks pretty cool. I wish the pestigors in it looked more like the new refresh for them that is on the way, but oh well.
From the early reviews I have watched it seems like Dark Water is lacking in things to do in between missions and is probably too stripped down and streamlined, but maybe an expansion or two might add something sometime in the future.
