Certainly an interesting idea, and yeah they don't really look very swarmy in their original state unfortunately =/

I can't believe it!!! Today was the first time in well over a month that I loaded the homepage and was amazed to see my minis there!! So stoked It's only my 2nd time and the first I really like. The other was the Zoanthrope dio that I am proud of, but I've got better since then (or so I think )

Scarab swarm complete. Had fun making this. Simple, basic and the modding made it a far more appropriate model than the stock. Will be doing more of these in the future

Thanks Jan. Truth is though modding aside, the Necrons would still look pants if I painted them badly and thanks to you being so kind in letting me use your "old metal" technique they look so much better than they would have otherwise IMHO.

Disappointing that the Thokt accent colour is blue so there are too many similarities to your AdMech (sorry about that). It wasn't planned and the Draknehoff Nightshade wash that I put on last doesn't show up well in photos.

It does happen sometime that washes/shades just dont seem to turn out right in the photos compared to what's right there in front of you. But hey ho - you've got the original so to the camera - lol

I've got a lot of RL stuff that's taking a lot of my time. Therefore I'm going to stick with the Necrons for now, because I know how I want them painted and I therefore won't have to spend my preciously small hobby time planning/debating/testing.

Therefore hear are a bunch of (as my dear friend Januine calls them) Toasters

The two that are pinned are from ages ago and just need a bit of detailing so I'll slot them in to the production line when appropriate. After this I'll try and look at the Epirian Contractors, ai'm just a bit nervous I'll mess the scheme up.

Hey. Brief WIP. Managed to get 7 warriors looking a bit like this. So now only need to block in the black on 4 more and then paint the blade on all of them. Finish bases and cut rods and we're done. Not much to do but need a little time, would've done it today but got greeted by the chirpy face of my toddler at my painting station at 1am and hence ensued Daddy duty.

Cheers for looking.

May was a disaster for hobby and to keep up with Paradigm's challenges I need to really be invested in the models, so I am delving in to Doctor Who.

Here's the plan for June (some will get done):

Have realised I need to take a press mould of Davros' head and shoulders though before painting (can't buy him anywhere for a reasonable price). That way I can make a Davros Emperor in the future if I ever feel up to the conversion challenge.

Hey. Couldn't sleep at all last night. Was on the computer until half 1 then just couldn't get my brain to shut off. So at 3am I gave up and started working on some hobby. Was in no fit state to paint, so I went to modding. And a brief comment from Januine reminded me I now had all the components to finish off my Broodlord base.

To recap:
Bought a bunch of brilliant Fenris bases for Space Hulk and Deathwatch: Overkill called Sulaco and Sulaco:Hive
The gent at Fenris hadn't made any 50mm bases in these styles
I bought blanks and planned to make my own
Painted Broodlord hoping to have the Bases from Fenris in time to press mould some elements to sort something out for one of Paradigm's challenges. But alas the delivery came too late.

Now:
The plan was to have the Broodlord a little higher to increase his imposing position. To use a 50mm base to fit in with the DW:O Patriarch being on a 50mm. I wanted more skulls and thought it would be fun to have him on a pile of skulls overflowing on to the floor with a couple more helmets thrown in. He would be raised by standing on the moulded pipe outlet sat on a cross of girders to allow me to use a smaller base's grill to create the press-moulded GS for the base. And because it fits with the posture of the mini I offset the cross behind the centre of the circle. Image 1 below shows the initial cross and GS, with the Broodlord pointing at a Deathwing Terminator's head.

Image 2 shows the four angles of the nearly finished base. Januine has suggested that the mesh may not work and the pipe is a little stuck on, which I think are fair comments. The pipe was meant to have been ripped off by the Broodlord and flung aside, I can add some detritus later to address this. The mesh was to hide some sins and add to the pile of mess around the "nest" of the Broodlord in an attempt to tie together the original base and the new. Happy for thoughts as to what to change to on those points.

And finally, image 3 shows the base ready for priming with the Broodlord removed. When primed I will be using GS to merge the last few components prior to painting. I can the use BFTBG on claws, splatter and dripping from tongue and some nurgle rot from the pipes.

Been a while since I've painted Necrons- at one time I had 40 warriors unpainted. Had to bite the bullet and batch paint ALL of them. Soooo boring but very rewarding in the end. Loving your Thokt Dynasty warrior

The Broodlord will look awesome when he's done! Love the base.

On to new matters now. Trying to keep a couple of projects going concurrently so have Dremeled the bars off the Daleks, Davros and 4th Doctor. Have also started to use my press mould hexagons to make parts of the Dalek bases

Nice start on the base with the broodlord , they have been eating their wheatties since I played tyrannies last

TP^DC Modelling Blog - Last Dalek and 3 Genestealers @ 2016/06/04 18:15:46

Post by: TP^DC Deputy Manager

Thanks Theophony. That Broodlord is the Space Hulk one. I decided I wanted to base the miniatures from the game because I didn't like the moulded bases for the Blood Angels and the Genestealers had huge inconsistencies of their basing so they didn't feel like a united force. Problem was the Broodlord had inconsistent base sizes historically. When Deathwatch: Overkill came out I just decided to stick with the 50mm size. Meant having to make my own base because Fenris Games don't do a matching 50mm base. Think it came out okay though

And on to my other project - bottom bars of Doctor Who figures cut off and they are ready for priming. The new 32mm bases are made and I am pleased with how they came out in the end. The hexagonal plating may not come off well because the hexagons were so big. Problem was I couldn't find anything else "on the free" so went with this. Think it works well enough. It's interesting at least. The Dalek forces will have that metal element on their bases and the "Good guys" ie Doctors/companions/UNIT will have just stones, but with muddy resin puddles too. I have other base features for other forces too for down the line. The stones will be black (easy post-priming) with some blue-grey drybrushing (thanks to Januine for that advice) rather than traditional grey.

The fluff is:
Spoiler:
All the characters and creatures have been brought back to the Dead Zone on Gallifrey where President Barosa once played his maniacal game in the Five Doctors. But something is different. There is no malign influence. The borders between time and realities are breaking down. Fractures in the fabric of the universe have formed and there is seepage between the Dead Zone and the rest of the universe. Time has fragmented and those sucked in to the chaos are forced to replay moments from their past and their future in an attempt to survive the present. Can the Doctors discover what has caused this cataclysm? Will they be able to survive? Will all 14 versions present in the Dead Zone be needed to solve the puzzle of how to fix the fractured? Will there be enough jelly babies? If only time could tell . . . . . . .

Well, that's the idea anyway. Helps explain the basing if nothing else

And here are the minis:

@Graven - if only you were a little closer to Wales I started coming up with fluff for game models to give figures context when I got back in to the hobby last year. Helps add a lot I find. Glad you like it

@Azazelx - Thanks for the compliment. The bases are all still curing so can't prime them yet, but hopefully soon. The Doctor Who figures are the Harlequin miniatures, you can get some from Black Tree Designs still, but a limited range.

Finished a second scarab swarm. Photo shows the Crimson fist victim ore and post gluing of the scarabs on. For those interested, there were two groups of scarabs (2 for the right and 5/6 on the left). They were glued together but not to base so I could paint the marine and then glue them on after. Voila!

If it wasn’t for the phase out rule, I’m sure we would see the fragments of the dozens of scarabs that brave marine took down before the end.

Love the scarabs, tons of character and action there. The loyalist and CF fan in me would like to see at least one scarab spitted on his knife, or cut in half by his head, but I understand.

That is a very good idea, can't believe I didn't think of it!

Thanks for the kind words guys. I think the swarm type models that GW do get just shoved on a base and ignored when you can have a lot of fun with them. I am very tempted for the third to be a wave, or even shaped like a fist a la Big Hero 6's microbots, but can't decide....

The answer, of course, is to make 2 more bases.

I think it might be hard to get something that actually looks like a fist. When you are making an image with pixels the size of scarabs, your resolution is going to suck. A fist is just going to end up looking like a blob or a pseudopod. I think a wave is something you could actually achieve.

Rather then a fist, you might be able to do an outstretched hand, with 2-3 scarabs linked up as “fingers”. You should be able to get something that looks like what you want that way. Bonus points if your Lord has his hand in the same position.

TP^DC Modelling Blog - Last Dalek and 3 Genestealers @ 2016/07/03 22:46:35

Post by: TP^DC Deputy Manager

Yeah, the green is ..... a long story.

I bought bases from Fenris games which have this alien growth on them suggesting alien infestation. He doesn't do a 50mm and wanted that size for the Broodlord and Patriarch to fit with the base you get with the Patriarch. So I had to make my own base and decided to make a press mould of some of the elements for consistency. I decided to follow Januine's lead with the green streaky goo and so it made sense to paint these bits the same colour.

Short version - I don't know what they are, but I like to think they are Tyranids growing within a sort of cocoon.

Bit of a multi-topic post. Been quiet for a while due to a new job which has a bit of a learning curve. Enjoying it, but exhausting and very little hobby time. They were great in the new job and honoured my annual leave planned for this week and as such I've had a great time with the family for the first time in what seems like ages. Plus I planned to get some hobby in. So put together a holiday hobby kit:

It's a repurposed baby bath time box. Now the little ones don't need it any more I nabbed it for holiday purposes. Clearly only able to take in a car, but it has about 20 models on blocks, all my paints and all my "use regularly" tools. There's even the sprues for a Nephilim Jetifghter!

Started off on hols rebasing 3 Space Hulk Genestealers on to resin bases:

Got them primed:

Have laid down the first two layers of purples on those three and the Patriarch too. Not massive progress, but something at least:

Hopefully more soon.

I had noticed a lot of people have some huge RL stuff going on right now. Conspiracy?............

Took my good friend Januine's advice and switched to different models last night and put the finishing touches on seven Necron Warriors. This photo is shocking, but pleased with them in real life. I am very pleased with the head guy with the blood drip on the blade, the pose that I had made him in to just fitted it so well:

Probably back to the Stealers tonight - last holiday day today so can't imagine they will get finished, but will be nice to get another stage further on before going home.

Thanks guys. Jan and I have had lots of discussions about "classic style" Genestealers. There is a part of me that just loves the colours, but I also dislike the day-glow tones of the original. So when I painted up the Broodlord I went for very darkened versions of all the colours. As a result of this I have a load of 2nd edition Tyranids that I was going to paint at some point and I'll do the same for those eg a Biovore that is pink and green, but much darker and putrid in tone. Well, that's the plan......

Cheers Jan. I know GW publicise these guys in pretty similar poses but you can get quite a bit of variability especially if you make some careful mods.

The crystals are part fluff and part squad markings. For those with keen vision, all the Warriors in this squad only have one crystal on their bases, a second squad would have 2 etc etc.

I really like your Necron stuff. Love the blue, and the crystals are a great touch! The blade dripping blood looks good too.

Thanks Oddball! When I get home I need to do a proper photo taking session to make the minis clearer to view.

Here's my progress from last night:

The Patriarch and 3 Genestealer purples are all done and look like the above. I have done a bit more work on the brain area and more pleased. The dead marine is meant to be a Space Wolf. I mixed my own colours (mainly because I was too cheap to buy a bunch of greys I will never use). There are two helmets on the base too which are all coloured the same.

Base (not pictured) is done as far as it can be now. The marine needs to be glued on the base, then streaks of gore need to be base painted terminatus stone, glue gun streaks added around the base and then both painted with Nurgle's rot. It will need blood splatter everywhere when the Patriarch has it painted on to him too. Plan to have blood draining from the severed arm through the grating.

Coming along nicely! If you want some more pop on the Wolf, stick some yellow or red on the pad to denote his rank (Blood Claw or Grey Hunter respectively).

TP^DC Modelling Blog - Last Dalek and 3 Genestealers @ 2016/07/22 16:47:36

Post by: TP^DC Deputy Manager

Had planned to do that actually Para. Was going to make it red, but which is the higher rank?

TP^DC Modelling Blog - Last Dalek and 3 Genestealers @ 2016/07/22 17:21:27

Post by: Paradigm

Grey Hunters are the more experienced, Blood Claws are equivalent in rank to Scouts in other Chapters. If you want actual veterans, you'll want grey Wolf Guard pads, but that's less interesting aesthetically.

Na! I just want the guy torn to shreds to be as senior as possible. Indicating that the Patriarch is a kill-all kind of beastie. Not sure it will stand out that well to the majority, but I do like little bits of fluff on pieces if I can. Cheers Para

I like the alternative colours on your necrons' transparent bits much more than the usual. Nice touch with the crystals on the bases as well.

The purples on the Patriarch are looking really bloody nice as well.

Thanks Az. The blue was my first step away from "official" colour schemes and I actually like the transparent rods. When I discovered you could use cut down Lego lightsaber blades I was converted.

Kind of shocked that I pulled off those purples

WIP of the base. Only a little bit of time today to paint (30mins) so concentrated on the less detailed stuff (ie base). When I return to it I will Need to fully finish the pipes, heating and brickwork before drybrushing the tarmac. That way the "dust" from the Tarmac will be on those objects too. I have an idea for the area around the pipes, but will need to do some work before that is possible.

That's pretty nifty. The flight stand is expertly disguised. Also, the white on the wings is really, really clean. How did you do that?

TP^DC Modelling Blog - Last Dalek and 3 Genestealers @ 2016/08/22 23:35:11

Post by: TP^DC Deputy Manager

Thanks guys, means a lot.

@Josh - the wing detailing was done by priming it all black, then masking everything off that was meant to stay black and then used a Tamiya ultra fine white primer to do a graduated white in the same way I would imagine you would do Zenithal priming.

So something like this:

And things move on a little (there's also some metalwork started, but that didn't seem worthy of a photo). So here are the two weapons options I placed. They are magnetised, but tbh, after priming they are a snug fit so probably not necessary

Indeed the weathering on those wings looks epic, getting such lovely white coverage over such a big area must have required a fair few thin coats and lots of patience. How did you achieve the weathering streaks on the wings?

TP^DC Modelling Blog - Last Dalek and 3 Genestealers @ 2016/08/31 17:39:24

Post by: TP^DC Deputy Manager

Sorry to say but I cheated with the white. If you take a look at this post you'll see I used a spray can - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/678704.page

The weathering on the wings was a combination of sponged on Leadbelcher, then brushed streaks of Leadbelcher from the splotches. Next was streaks of Agrax Earthshade. Finally each rivot and a few select other points had a splodge of Typhus Corrosion applied then I blew on the splodge with a straw from the front of the Jetfighter to simulate the airflow in flight.

Not sure if others have better methods, but that was mine

Hmmyeah there's something in that, I just so often think 'oh this'll be easy, I'll keep it simple' and then despite that it's still a bunch of work just for the size. So maybe 'a lot of work' is more accurate than 'hard'.

Hey. Been lurking but not painting for a bit. I was a bit shell shocked by how well people thought the Nephilim went and as a result I knocked my own confidence by being convinced I would never manage to meet that level again. I spent a month thinking of pulling open the hobby station, but just veering away instead. I don't think the choice for Para's hobby challenge helped - I don't do much fantasy and the theme was Magic. Picking Gandalf was not a good choice, the mini had such emotional weight to it I didn't want to mess it up

So a month later, a near total burn out from work and I didn't know where I was. I decided to start slow and finish some back log from the primed pile. It was getting too big and I was getting down looking at it. This month's hobby challenge is Halloween and I have no monster's ready and don't want to do the clichéd genestealer. I therefore am not doing a monster (yet). I have painted these two Daleks for Doctor Who The Miniatures Game just for me to have finished something:

They aren't very good and they are a step back. I couldn't highlight them well and they are bland because of the colours which are stock photos. They are only getting iPhone photos and deserve no better until I have a Dalek army to photograph. I had loads of fun painting the exploded Dalek and feel better after that one. That is the goal after all so that was nice. I'm going to paint a few more quickish minis this month and if I do well I will look at maybe doing a Genestealer Cultist for the challenge. No targets, I'll see. I want to play with skin tones a lot so it would be nice to play around with them.

Good stuff, and great to see you painting again! The daleks might not be flashy, but they look bang on for the old-school design/scheme (the gunmetal grey Geneis-era ones are probably my favourite of the old ones), and the dead one is awesome.

Thanks Para, it felt good to paint again. I'll see what else I can manage. Getting the balance between work, family and hobby is a tricky one.

The grey and black Daleks are some of my favourites too, no sparkle, no shine, just drab. Hopefully will do some more soon

If you're watching Genesis of the Daleks that is too creepy Graven.

And here is Davros:

Pleased with how the skin came out. I found it hard to purposefully do a sick/pale skin tone that wasn't gorey. Think I pulled it off.

I'' trying to highlight as much as is able, but these sculpts are tiny and it just isn't fully possible. Only 1 Dalek left in this batch and then I'll look at finishing off some other half finished minis

Very nice indeed! Nah, working my way through Capaldi (woo, Zygons).

Haha! Fair enough. I've no problem with that, been enjoying Capaldi's run since he started.

Oh! Loving the Davros! He looks great.
Have a soft spot for him, and his yelling.

Fave on this page is definitely the melted Dalek, though.

Nice work on the skin tone, you've really got that pallid unwell look.

Man, those Daleks really take me back. Davros turned out well. How did you do his skin tones?

Cheers Buttery. Means a lot. I too love the "unhinged one" that is Davros. When I first saw Nurgle's Rot used on a mini (May we'll have been Januine's SH termie I immediately thought of an exploded Dalek. Had to be done!

I have enjoyed combining my two big (non-family) loves with these minis. Will look forward to doing some of the others.

The skin tone was:
Chaos Black prime
Cadian Fleshtone base
Reikland wash all over skin
Flayed One Flesh highlight
Reikland again in recesses only
Pallid Wych Flesh highlight
Nuln Oil around eyes, in cheeks and in ears
Further Pallid Wych flesh highlights to smooth around nuln areas
heavily diluted nuln oil layer over all to soften transitions and add the sickly appearance

Huh. 9 layers. Who knew?

Thank you all for your kind words (that includes you EDC)

While watching Januine's Twitch feed tonight I finished the last of the current batch of Daleks (there are loads so there will be more!):

And after finishing that I went on to re-start these 3 Space Hulk Genestealers:

Busy weekend of family and "homework" so may not get more done until next week.

Thanks a lot Azazelx. I know they aren't perfect, I'm aiming for "good" these days instead of beating myself up for not being as good as my friends on here. With luck I'll get better at some point.

Sorry I haven't been on your thread, I've got so little time these days I haven't got time to check in with everyone. I will soon though. Promise.
