Youknow. I got a new idea.
Ban bathrooms.

A more realistic alternative potentially, just have restrooms with stalls.

Yup.

Not sure why it's the norm to expect men to whip their tackle out in front of everyone and pee against the wall.

I always use the stall and see no reason why urinals should exist, which would be more condusive to unisex bathrooms.

They're good for the environment, They use much less water, and you get get some that don't use any water.

In addition they take up less real estate since you don't have to have a full stall around them, just a small divider.

Your tackle is probably less visible than it would be using your standard US stall with the giant gab that always has someone eyeballing you while taking a crap to see if the stall is occupied.

I use the urinals myself. That seems like bad form

But seriously, agreed. Its an easy solution. You need better stall doors though. I mean everyone remembers Zombieland Rule #3: Beware of Bathrooms.

http://www.zombielandrules.com/all-zombieland-rules/

TBone liked to pee against the wall, or a post, or anywhere. He would bark...once... and you had exactly 8 seconds to let him out (and thats when he was healthy)

So why don't ladies rooms have lines of holes in the ground for them to squat over?

I know this is probably a thing somewhere in Asia, but in the west I don't think we have such a "real estate and water saving" feature for the girls to use while feeling good about the environment.

All public, or quasi-public, bathrooms are disgusting; largely because of the behavior of the primary users. And locker rooms are twice as bad.

Real Estate: Squat toilets don't really save any real estate over regular toilets. I figure you probably know the anatomical difference between boy parts and girl parts, but for the sake of clarity: A man can pee pretty easily standing up, and when a man does pee standing up he only has to expose one small fraction of his body, and that part is pretty easily covered by a small divider on either side of the urinal. A woman who pees in a hole in the ground is taking up just as much space as a woman peeing into a regular toilet so there is no space saved there. A woman peeing into a hole in the ground also still has to expose pretty much her entire lower body, requiring the same amount of walls to separate her as a woman peeing into a toilet. The logistics of a woman peeing is pretty similar to a woman pooping, so there is no reason or benefit of coming up with a physical "woman peeing" location vs a physical "woman pooping" location.

Water saving: toilets are still becoming more efficient, and many toilets now come with a "flush pee" and a "flush poop" selector so that you only use the appropriate amount of water.

Never seen a "flush 1 or 2" selector. Interesting.

Women's bathrooms are substantially worse. In my younger days I had to clean both. Wow.

I did too*, and based on my experience women's bathrooms were not especially different from men's. Blood, feces, and urine were common in both. People, regardless of sex or gender, tended to do as they pleased on the basis that they had paid other people to clean up.

*I even managed people that had to do the same.

My experience is different. Your mileage may vary. It may have to do with the location. My joy was at a kid's amusement park. What has been seen CANNOT BE UNSEEN.

Blood, feces, and urine were common in both.

Blood, ok ya got me on that.

Ironically, when flying to/from theater.... my flights tended to stop in at Shannon, Ireland's Airport, where the "urinal" was, in fact, the wall

Now... it was a slightly slanted wall that ended in a trough (so you're not pissin' on your boots/shoes) but it was still basically a wall

What? Is this serious? What is so dangerous about using a public restroom? American boys can't yet pee by themselves at age 6? Truly, everytime I get on Dakka, the US becomes weirder and weirder. In continental Europe, it is really normal for boys of 6 or older to go to the men's restroom on their own. I never hear of anything bad happening.
Before I got on Dakka, I thought US culture was just a more nationalistic and capitalist version of European culture. But now I see that comprehending even a tiny bit of this alien culture would take a lifetime of study. I have more than enough trouble understanding the Dutch and British already, let alone the Americans. I never knew there were such huge differences. I learn a lot here on OT.

You must have very clean restrooms in the Netherlands if you let 6 year olds crawl all over them unsupervised.

Just throw on some camo clothes, think of the worst, crappiest beer imaginable, and then drink something worse than that, and watch NASCAR. Throw in a good range session where you shoot some gunz, and you're well on your way... we're not really all THAT complicated

Actually, its more mothers who have kids when they are by themselves. If they wanna pee, they have to take the brat in with them

Reasons to take your 7 year old to the restroom:

- make sure they don't touch the gak covered toilet seat
- protect them from the rapists in restrooms and dressing rooms (which appear to be super common according to this thread)
- help then reach the sink to wash their hands when they are done

Yes, we're a nationalistic, capitalistic version of Europe that are averse to the idea of having a 7 year old wade through the gak encrusted hell-hole that is the public restroom, unsupervised.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with the way rug-rats prioritize things, but lets just say that germ theory isn't a major point of concern for them.

Also, malls and such.... probably not somewhere you want to lose sight of your child.

We have lots of toilets like that over here in Scotland. There's usually a difference in tiles so you can see where the floor stops and the urinal begins. Other ones are troughs. Much more efficient space wise but no privacy, but it's not so bad since we're a nation of drunks anyway

Who remembers these:

and these:

I remember we had a free-standing trough in elementary school so it was like kids on all sides peeing in a bathtub in the middle of the room. How we didn't piss all over each other is beyond me. But that was how it was and it was ok

I very much remember both of those options from my childhood

The former was in a set of public facilities (literally a brick gakhouse).

The latter was actually the "men's room" at the local swimming pool...

There was also the type that Ensis referred to, where there was just a sloping set of tiles shaped like a gutter along the floor by the wall.

The good old trough urinals, back when I was a kid they had one at the baseball stadium that ran down the center of the restroom where if it was busy you'd actually pee facing somebody across from you. I was about 7-8 at the time so it always freaked me out and made me wonder who made such a stupid design. At least the ones that face the wall don't grant you full front on view of somebody else's junk.

I won't post the pics here as it involves some nudity but if you google trough urinal there's a bunch of images of old outdoor style ones where people are standing around in public view pissing. Must not have much of an issue back in the 40-60's where most of the stainless steel or porcelain troughs are from.

They used to have similar at the old Kingdome... only it was one giant long metal "tub" kind of thing, not several smaller porcelain ones packed together.

It was probably a massive waste of water, because there was a pipe with a constant drip of water to keep draining happening and cut down a bit on smells.
