Ahh, I see. How is that gloss nuln oil working for you? I could never understand how it could work, so I saved it for hydrolic joints on vehicles. Obviously it has worked wonders on your model!

@EDC cheers mate, I do enjoy painting, so when I get the opportunity to sit down and get on, I can do 5 hours without feeling like half an hour has passed.
@WBD I've found that it works well when glazed on, when it pools or leaves streaks they are a bit of a pain (which there are a few examples of on the shadowsword) but overall I really like it. It isn't as dark as regular wash, so I directly apply normal wash where I want stronger shadowing. With the airbrush for highlights, and the gloss not toning them out, it's made the iron work a breeze. I definitely recommend giving it a few trials, with a pot of matt on hand to control the shine.

That's a great job on the Tormentor JamesY. Your approach suits the fluff to a tee and is nice to see people reflecting it in their work.
Am I right in thinking that the Tormentor has a transport capacity? I just wonder how they thought of that in the rules since the model only has hatches?
94888
Post by: JamesY
Thanks elnibbus, I often end up starting a project based on reading the fluff, so although I don't insist on 100% "accuracy," I do try to maintain the elements that drew me to it.
Yeah the tormentor has a capacity of 15 with the access point at the rear. I always thought that that was an oversight of an otherwise great kit, that the infantry would have to climb out of the top to actually exit it. It should have had a doorway as an alternative rear panel. I just wish it could carry MC's so that Perturabo could use it with the iron circle bodyguard.

A heavy weekend of eating and drinking has meant not a lot of painting, but I have finally been able to tackle something I've been looking forward too since starting the army, the banner;
This was after placing the transfer and an initial trim to fit. After it had set and was varnished, i was able to trim the remaining overhang, paint out the tears, give it a border, add a couple of highlights to show the ripples and I brightened the eyes a bit;
When the rest is done I'll take a better picture. Cheers ,

Post by: WarbossDakka
Look James, that is not ok. It CAN'T be done that quickly. I let the Tormentor slide, but this (done on alcohol) is just plain ridiculous. Bloody amazing painting.
I think I'd let you use the Iron Circle inside the Tormentor, I mean it doesn't make much sense not to if I'm honest. The Veterans are shaping up nicely, as well as the first Iron Circle member being assembled. This is going to be awesome

Cheers fellas, although credit for the banner really belongs with FW, the quality of their transfer sheets has become very impressive. That said, trimming it neatly and evenly into place was a victory in itself
I can't wait to get my paint brush on the iron circle, I've got two at present, and am really looking forward to getting them done. Building that one has been a nightmare so far though, the thing just has not wanted to stay glued.
Also GA, your stuff is looking good, don't worry if you aren't getting it done as fast as you'd like, it'll all get done

Very productive, brother. I love the Baneblade, and the squads are coming along very nicely (and very quickly). It's great to have this thread to visit for that extra bit of inspiration and motivation.
I'm on the verge of completing my legacy Iron Warriors (the ones I started 10 years ago). Then it's the Legacy Dread, finding the Legacy Vindicator, and then new models. I just need to decide between IW Khorne Berserkers or a MKIII Heresy-style squad...

Post by: JamesY
Cheers Az, unfortunately I'm going to have to slow down over the next couple of months, exams coming up and then examining after, going to be precious little time for hobbying. I love the 'legacy' notion of yours, if I dared look in some cupboards, god knows what old projects might be found. I have also thought of doing IW berzerkers and plaguemarines, using the FW upgrades. I'd though about doing some units with rust and oxidation to transition from clean Marines to plaguemarines within the same army. Maybe one day. I look forward to seeing yours first though!
I have managed to make some progress, with there being so many characters I'm taking my time on some of the details.

Doing them and the command squad, I just haven't done anything on them worth showing. And thanks although it will be my pupils taking their gcse's, rather than me sitting any exams. Not sure which is more stressful though! I've been appointed as an examiner now though, so I get the fun of even more marking...
What are you working on at the minute?

I was gonna say, I thought you were way past your exams, though it is still a bit embarrassing . I'm currently working on some Deathwatch Vets at the moment, though I think I have the armour down now. Thank god for White Dwarf though, their colour scheme for black is a LOT better than the one on Warhammer TV.

@Master Azalle Cheers mate, still more iron in the fire, so to speak. I can't decide on a head for the banner bearer, don't know whether to go crest, or use one of the iw specific ones.
@EDC Cheers pal games went well thanks, I used them against ravenguard to devastating affected. The iron fire used with bikes is brutal, first turn barrage wiped out a twenty man blob with librarian, and a unit of terminators, and the Havocs and siege tyrants whittled his armour away quickly. Last week I took my eldar against the new 30k thousand sons rules (couldn't be bothered to pack the iw's up), and my warphunter and hornets did me proud. Hopefully I'll get more 30k in over Easter and I'll try and get some decent pictures.

Cheers Az, without further delay (I'm back to my old camera again for the time being, so not brilliant on the fine details unfortunately)...
Command squad
Apothecaries
Just noticed that the base of the mkiv needs touching up, and the blood drip on the mkii needs re-leveling as my attempt to making it look like it swishing around really hasn't worked.
Primarus Medicae
The heart rate monitor on his waist has come out better than it looks on the picture.
Techmarine/Siege breaker/Warsmith
IV legion tactical marines/Iron Warriors Veterans
Made a bit of an error on these, I had thought the transfers that were intended for the left pauldron were gold. They aren't, they are silver, and so couldn't go on the silver pauldron I therefore had to switch the black and silver around, so they don't match up with the other IV legionaires I've done. Not a huge thing, but it's going to bug me when I look at them. Old eyes these days...
And a group shot;
So, I'm going to do Kharn for the p&m monthly challenge, and then on to the Iron Circle and their creator.

Love those Iron Circle robots! There's something about Perturabo that I just don't really like, sculpt wise. I feel they could've done better with his face, and had the cables and what not further back.
94888
Post by: JamesY
Cheers both, the house needs dragging into the modern age, but it'll make a great home. My hobby space is about to shrink though.
I really like the iron circle, fantastic models, not fun to build though.
@AoV I know what you mean about the face, far fewer cables would have been much better, and less base. I don't like a lot of FW's face sculpts, or even many of the Primarchs. If Angron hadn't been so small, or Curse's face had a better sculpt, or Mortarion hadn't been so static, I probably wouldn't have painted so much Iron. Lucky for me they have grown on me

Unfortunately I haven't done a huge amount of painting over the weekend, although I have done a little more on Perturabo. You'll have to excuse the quality, up close pic with my phone;
It looks a lot smoother in the flesh. I have darkened his eye sockes and cheek lines more since the picture was taken, and added pupils to his eyes.
I have also done a little building...
Another five Siege Tyrants, and
Ten man Tartaros squad and classic box dreadnought. Couldn't resist adding him, although I doubt he'll ever see a game. Will be fun to paint though, and the iron clad only took an evening, so hopefully he'll be the same.
94888
Post by: JamesY
Progress is slow at present, what with it being exam season on the immediate horizon, and planning a relocation to a new home (packing up a hobby room is deeply upsetting). However, there has been some;
Siege Tyrants
Awful posing on these models, as the sculpts are very static. I can't stand the augmetic details, so that guy will always be the first casualty.
Tartaros terminators
Seeker squad and legion dreadnought
And the Iron Circle
Had a nightmare with these whilst doing the hazards, long story short the low adhesive masking tape pulled a huge chunk of paint off the model, so I had to re-prime and varnish the models, including Perturabo. Last time I undercoat FW with chaos black spray!
52201
Post by: evildrcheese

Oh yes, they were well scrubbed in hot soapy water. The resin was very glossy, but it was definitely scrubbed. It's the only time it's happened, but I'll be spraying everything with varnish just in case now.

Great work on the Tyrants Terminators, they look great. The static-ness of a lot of the newer/character models bugs me too brother, but you did a great job with them
I dont know how anyone does hazard stripes... they give me a drinking complex thinking about it.

Cheers MA. Stripes aren't too bad, just a matter of neatening and tidying up until they are right, which I think iron warriors need if they are to look decently painted. It's my harlequins I'm dreading...

@kepora I know! I've painted about 250 marines over the last 12 months, and have probably done about 5 bare heads. As much as I prefer the helmets, I wanted to do something a bit different with the seekers, and really make them stand out as veterans, and grizzled bare heads really gave them some much desired character. Cheers I will probably only use them for 30k as I don't get time to play very often, and have plenty of 40k armies to chose from. Never say never though, so I might if the opportunity comes up.
IFC_Casting wrote:Those hazard stripes are great, I can't paint them for the life of me.
Cheers bud. They get easier, anything bigger than a knee pad and I use 2mm masking tape. It's the clean up that's important, especially on spherical surfaces like the tartaros shoulder pads. I can put together some kind of tutorial when I get to that stage if it would be helpful?
Here are a few pics from the aforementioned game. 5 noshows meant that three of us had a lot of table to fill. Luckily, we'd brought plenty. So it ended up as a siege of Terra scenario, Iron Warriors against a force made up of Imperial Fists, Iron Hands and Mechanicum. Having just moved, I couldn't lay my hands on the camera, so unfortunately just a few phone photos;
Turn one I seized the initiative, Perturabo, Siege Tyrants and Tartaros all arrived via deep strike.
Drop pod with suicide melts meant my medusas left the game without firing.
Reserves and rules.
It was a great game, a few highlights included; Polux dying to overwatch fire from two plasma support marines, an IH killing Perturabo with a punch to the face, the look on my friend's face on turn 4 when he realized that the range of his phosphex mortars is 36", and not 18" as he'd been thinking, my Proteus surviving endless fire from malcadors, dreadnoughts and mechancium bots, and the Tormentor clearing the bridge as it exploded.
Thanks again for all the positive comments, more progress pictures soon

In amongst the holidaying and decorating, I have found some time to get to the painting table
First off, most of this batch is going to be on the newish mining sector bases, painted in the same scheme as previous;
I didn't want another load of 25mm bases I don't need, so hopefully they will integrate well.
Brass, pteruges, and washes done on all the infantry;
Next step is the black, then the hazards . Thanks for looking.

When in combat squads
Unfortunately the black mask transfers are too big for the cataphractii shoulder pads, so I had to use silver ones. I had the idea to paint the under pauldron with the hazards rather than the top one on the regular guys, an idea I had after assembly. I regretted it during painting, but I am pleased with the result, and it made identifing the combat squad Sgt easy by doing a second one with top plates. Autocannons were from the tartaros termis put on the cataphractii heavy flamer arm.
Laser array Rapier platform
This will be a part of my IV legion army, which so far hasn't got a single hazard stripe. I've added them to this and the predator (nearly done), as I wanted a visual tie into the rest of the army, and hazard stripes around powerful guns seems logical.
For nostalgia, a box dread
And a Captain of the IV legion;
So I have a predator, two rhinos and a cheeky secret extra on my desk that are nearly done. After that, possibly the biggest (assuming my final payment as an examiner ever comes through) single step addition to the iron warriors will begin...

Post by: JamesY
So today I finished the three tanks I have been working on;
And a quick game of spot the difference
The reason for the different hatches on the rhino is so that it can be used in my 1k early great crusade list, and in an Iron Warriors list, and look right in both.
Here is the finished early crusade army;
All in mkiii armour to reflect the 4th getting new gear earlier than other legions. Hopefully the list will see a game soon.
And a group shot, everything that is painted so far;
Starting to look like a legion army now.
I have three tanks in boxes waits to be built next, but I am until payday to add a further six (  ). So to keep me busy until then, I picked up a box of scouts today and am trying to turn them into carapace armour wearing recon legionaries;
I've replaced the power cables with magazines, put the night vision goggles on scion heads, and will use 32mm bases. Any suggestions to make them more overtly astartes would be appreciated, I tried using the bare Reiver heads, but they were just a little too big.
Cheers

That's an awesome looking force, James. I'm mightily impressed!
The captain/termies/rapier update is also filled with win. The captain looking so obviously loyalist is a bit jarring, though..
94888
Post by: JamesY
Cheers Az Yes he doesn't really fit in with the full army, what with all those honour badges. I see him as a victim of the decimation though, so he will never be on the table if it's an IW list, rather than just that little IV force. Hence the cheap citadel fella, rather than a FW beauty.

Great looking iron warrior legion you have building up there. I like the mix with 30k force and 40k force.
94888
Post by: JamesY
Cheers Theophony, I have used a few citadel kits, but it is all meant to be 30k. Mixing it up has saved a few pennies on FW pieces where I'm not overly fussed about their version of the model.
So whilst I am waiting on a replacement panel and an order from FW, I have knocked up a few little bits to join the iron;
Attack bike with autocannon
Attack bike with multimelta
I just used the plastic multimelta this time, as they are all I have used from the last pintle weapon set I bought, and didn't want to buy another just for that.
A vigilator (I still need to sculpt him a cloak)
And a Centurion riding a bike;
I also have a ten man mkii assault squad washed and ready to assemble, and some combat shields from Pop goes the Monkey on Shapeways to go on them. I'll try and get them built this week
91286
Post by: WarbossDakka
Yeah JamesY, the new term has just started again hasn't it? Nice progress anyway James, I would certainly be interested in how you go about sculpting cloaks - I want to get more handy with greenstuff, eventually doing hair and things like that.
94888
Post by: JamesY
Yeah it's a new term, 150 new names to learn... Not too bad though, all of my classes seem good, which is a very nice change.
When I do the cloak I'll take lots of pictures. I don't pretend to be an expert, but I can do a few bits (cloak, hats, hair etc), and have found that the more tools you have, the easier it is.
91286
Post by: WarbossDakka
That's... a lot of pupils. Good luck with that, but I bet you're used to it by now
I think I have a sculpting set lying around, so I'll try it out soon.

You are going for 30k Outriders using 40k bikes? I was looking at the same thing. I like the 30k bikes but not paying $70 or so for 3. I think they will look great with 30k marines on them.
94888
Post by: JamesY
@WBD yeah feeling pretty well settled into the job now, and old enough to get away with forgetting
@40kFSU I used the chaos bikes for the outriders as they are much lighter and less armored. I had a bike left over after building the two attack bikes, so just thought I'd do something with it. Hopefully he'll fit in with the rest. I don't mind the FW ones, but I don't like them enough to pay the price tag.
So another unit built and ready for painting is;
So it might look like it's time to get some paint on all this bare plastic and resin, but unfortunately I have six more models on my desk to build. Three FW predators, a Siciran, a Siciran Arcus, and a Typhon Siege tank
94888
Post by: JamesY
Done some building today;
Picked up the predator squadron today, so will aim to build those tomorrow. As soon as the replacement typhon track section arrives, the armoured breakthrough will be ready for painting
94888
Post by: JamesY
Finally got the silver down on everything on the table, most notably these fellas;
There is also the assault squad, attack bikes and centurion on bike, all in silver.
Here is an example of a shapeways print from pop goes the monkey. It only has the base layers so far, but you get the idea;
The details are a fair bit deeper than they look at first, and the size and graphics are spot on. Hopefully more pictures soon

That's a cool shield. No doubt who is coming to ruin your day when you see that coming. All those tanks are gorgeous too.

Post by: Azazelx
Great stuff here again James. Shield looks great as well. I'd be all over some of those if I could figure out a way to use them in 40k.
94888
Post by: JamesY
Cheers both!  Been a while since my last post, mainly because there is so much good stuff on my painting table at present that I couldn't stay focussed on one thing. However, I did manage to get these fellas finished last week;
Apologies for the pictures, no space for the lightbox as the space I used is covered in tanks, which hopefully will be finished soon. I've also had a few sneaky additions to the pile, thanks to having had a birthday recently. More speed enroute...

Post by: Azazelx
They look great, James. If only I could find somewhere for Combat or Storm Shields in the CSM list, I'd probably buy these (and the bigger ones!)
91286
Post by: WarbossDakka
They look class! Always thought assault troops should have shields regardless of millennia, and these guys especially look the part. Well done!
94888
Post by: JamesY
@Azazelx cheers mate, I'm pretty pleased with them I have to say. Maybe you could use them with something that has the daemon rule (i.e. possessed or warp talons)? That way they'd get the save they'd have gotten from the shield anyway. That or a nurgle unit, with the shield the reason for them being a bit harder to kill?
@WBD cheers bud I feel exactly the same. I ummed and aahed about them for a few months, as the price with p&p was pretty steep, but finally succumbed to temptation, and I'm glad I did. I also think that devastators should be able to take jump packs to help them get into the best positions quickly.
I'm in the doctor's waiting room at present, so I'll have to add a picture later, but coming next is the armoured breakthrough; three predators, a siciran, a siciran arcus, and a typhon heavy siege tank are all well under way.
115
Post by: Azazelx
Honestly, since I posted the other day I'm thinking of just ordering the shields, and running them in friendly games with loyalist rules/point costs but swapping ATSKNF for DTTFE.
Possessed or Warp Talons might work in less friendly games, should the need arise.

Right, time for a long overdue update. Thanks to a very pernicious virus, I've been pretty much bed/sofa bound for the last couple of weeks, meaning I hadn't been able to paint or photograph anything, hence the delay. As I was feeling a little better today, I did a few finishing touches (decals mostly) cleared my side table, and set up the lightbox. And here we go;
Centurion on bike
Attack bikes, multimelta and autocannon
Recon squad in carapace armour (converted scouts)
Sniper rifles had power cables replaced with magazines, scion heads with the scout night vision goggles added. For the camo, I tried a pattern based on the ss autumn winter scheme, ad I have some bolt action waffen that I plan on doing.
Better pics of the assault squad
And now the good stuff...
Predator squadron
Siciran battle tank
Siciran Arcus Tank
Typhon Siege tank
The armoured breakthrough
And that's all. On the painting table next are a few rogue additions ( ), a vigilator, master of signals, champion, a scimitar jet bike squad, a javelin and an Achilles landraider. After that, I'd like a fire raptor, and I think the legion is finished, and something new will be on the table. Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

This is one of the greatest update I have ever seen. The Sicarian and Arcus look particularly nasty. Predators are sweet too now that I think about it. I think the tanks are the main reason I like HH so much.

Cheers fellas, and I am feeling much better now. There isn't too much iron left to do, just a few gaps I want to fill. Unfortunately however, there are lots of other unfinished projects to do afterwards. I've got at least four armies that need painting, a couple that need finishing off, and a few games like space hulk and deathwatch to do. It'll be a good couple of years before the backlog is down to an acceptable level.

4 armies to paint? So for you that's gonna be what, 2 months tops?

@AoV, there's always room for one more...
@WBD, I wish, commuting and my new role has really chipped into my painting time. Hopefully I'll get at least two of them done next year. I really want to get started on my heroquest stuff next year though, so that will probably take over.
94888
Post by: JamesY
Long delay since the last update, unfortunately not much has happened since then. The Achilles is done, although I don't have the box set up at present, so this is the best I can do for now;
Coming next, some mobile support;
Christmas break starts after tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have some time to work on them.
Cheers

It's been a good long time since my last update, impending fatherhood and all the demands it brings have restricted hobby time to a minimum. I haven't been idle though, nearly finished are some fast support;
Transfers need applying, then all subassemblies can be put together. These models seem to have taken an age to paint, although the price tag does warrant some decent time spending on them. Once they are done I'll get the light box out, and take some better pictures of these;
Moritat with destroyer squad. Unfortunately FW decided to print the destroyer squad markings in black, a fact I didn't realise until after I had painted their pauldrons black, so they didn't get used
Also;
A second laser destroyer array rapier platform, and a champion & master of signals. Once I've finished the skimmers, I've got my final model of my iron warriors to finish, the mighty (hopefully) fire raptor
Apologies for the poor pics, better will follow soon!
Cheers

Finally, some better (although still not brilliant) pictures;
Land speeder
Scimitar jetbikes
[url=https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/942977-.html]
I haven't added the guns yet as I plan on magnetizing them. Probably a little late now but never mind.
Mortiat
Destroyers

Champion and master of signals
Laser destroyer array rapier platform
Now I've got this to crack on with
Hope you like them

Been making some progress with the fire raptor; hull is all highlighted and washed, so I'll be working on the finer details. I have finished the waist turrets, and am fairly happy with how they have come out;
With how dark they are, I decided to go with an internal light from the console screens. Far from perfect osl I know, but for how limited the visibility is on them I didn't feel it necessary to worry too much. I'll be leaving the covers off, I can't comprehend wanting to cover all that tremendous detail.
I'll get pics up of the raptor when I've got more on it than just silver. Thanks for looking

A great end to a great blog. This army is beautiful. That post from November with all the tanks still makes me cry. Looking forward to seeing the next project.

Post by: JamesY
Cheers mate, I had a great time doing it. What started off as a week long project ended up lasting two years. I physically don't have a surface big enough in the house (except for the floor or kitchen worktops) big enough for a whole army shot.
So, new projects begun!  I finally got around to buying enough Scions for a 1k list, built with 8th in mind. It is all built;
I had been nicely getting through the preliminary base coats, but then my wife went into labour, and I now have a beautiful son  . Now that I am sleeping in two hour batches, the idea of trying to paint such small details neatly is too terrifying to comprehend. With that in mind, I thought it the perfect time to get something easier to do, so the primaris marines from DI have been assembled, with a couple of additions to fill out the army a little;
I have converted my own hellblaster unit;
I'll use the normal hellblaster rules, so finally, heavy bolters will cause some damage! Very pleased with the finished look of this unit, they look sinister as hell.
I have always fancied a Howling Griffons army, so decided now was the time. I am going for a grittier look, and so am going for a more earthy yellow, and am drushbrushing the first layer over the primer to create a little texture. Here is the test model;
Let me know what you think. It isn't a difficult scheme, so hopefully won't take to long to knock the army out...
Cheers.

Nice to see you mixing it up a bit with Tempestus, they're an army I've always wanted to take a stab at too.

@wbd cheers mate, it's really nice painting something different. Those get started boxes from darksphere make scions a reasonably cheap army, although I suppose everything seems cheap after fw. The yellow isn't too bad, it's really more of a brown. What are you working on presently?
@venom cheers! He's not too bad at all, only cried when he wants something. Hopefully won't be too long before he's sleeping through.
@AoV cheers bud

94888

Yeah that blue only looks good with the full 90's aesthetic, which is a tad bright. Have you thought about a heresy style grey?
Hellblasters done, not sure if I am happy with them or not, but they are finished, so I can move on Leiutenant in the background.

Funny you should mention the heresy style, because that's what I want to emulate. Although, I have been tempted by the Badab War chapters recently too, especially since I already have the SM codex. I like the look of Raptors...

11,000 plus points. All painted, no recasts. I took lots of pictures whilst they were set up. I'll share more when I've sorted through them.

Post by: JamesY
I haven't updated this in a while, despite having done a couple of projects since the last post. However, new home, new life, new hobby room, new project, thought that I would resurrect the blog.
I'm a bit late to the party with warcry, having been a bit bitter about missing out on the initial release. I always loved the stories from the old world set in the chaos wastes, however, so it was always a matter of time before succumbing. The Conan inspired Darkoath warband did it for me, so I decided that if I was going to do it, that I might as well get some of the other bits that I had been after;
I really liked the Corvus Cabal band, so thought that I'd start with them. Here is the test model, based obviously on the box art;
And a group shot of the first 5;
I would like to do all of the warbands eventually. Any thoughts or criticisms on the cabalites so far would be most welcome.
Cheers
94888
Post by: JamesY
Well the warcry phase didn't last long with the new heresy relaunch. The Iron Warriors may see the light of a new addition, but a new project has begun. I've dug out all the leftovers from the IW's (which amounted to a good start), and bought myself a great big pile of stuff after what was a hard working exam series (I spent most of my summer holidays marking and reviewing exam scripts.) I'll share more pictures soon, but here is a taster of the new project;
I'm doing Sons of Horus set in the siege of terra era, so signs of corruption have begun in earnest. I won't be using many CSM models, but wanted to do this one. There will be more coming soon. The army will be about half the size of the IW's, but I'll be taking my time much more with the painting of them.
Thanks for looking

Thanks both, your kind words are much appreciated . I'm really happy with the dreads, hopefully I'll do them justice with the paint. They'll be fighting a White Scars all dread army when they are done.
I have bought a new light set up for taking pictures with my phone. Had a bit of a play last night and whilst I am happy with the lighting, the sharpness of the images and colour accuracy still isn't quite what I'd like. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be really appreciative of the guidance. I have a Galaxy phone, so the camera is reasonably decent at 12mp, and I am following the guidance on settings/distance etc as recommended by gw and others, but somehow they still just aren't quite there;

As soon as I saw the new khorne berzerker kit, I knew that I wanted to convert them into SoH reavers. I have a couple of boxes of the fw ones waiting to be built, but they just feel a bit small next to the mkvi marines.
I will get some better pictures done at some point, but here is a quick look. All khorne and WE bits shaved off, some 3d printed heads and pauldrons, some chains and mirror coins and boom. I really wanted to add some weapons from the sanguinary guard kit too, to make it look like they'd taken a few trophies.
I'm a bit torn on the paint scheme to use as my army is going to be led by Abaddon, so they should be black. Trouble is I think that they look better in green. I still don't think that Abaddon should have been wearing black in 30k, but that's well past the point of no return.
Let me know what you think of them

Quick wip shot of the reavers so far. I've only put 3 in the pic so that they are easier to see than the last post.
I have just finished Saturnine this week, and so obviously was thrilled to see all of the reavers and justaerin
I am really pleased with them so far; they look brutal and swift, and I like that the models are posed in a way that the pauldrons are being used as shields, which is their intended purpose. I've gotten really into scale 75 paints since starting this project, especially their metallics. I've ordered the steel set, so when they arrived I'll be able to get on with them.

Cheers mate. They are really useful to have, and the quality of the stls out there is phenomenal. I'm still using the anycubic photon that I bought nearly 5 years ago. Perfect for what I need and the resin for it is pretty cheap these days.
gobert wrote:Those reavers look amazing! I take it the new world eaters are closer in size to the MkVI marines?

Cheers mate. I just follow Luthermax's steps with red sunz and white, with a glaze of red over the lenses and the highlights around them. Simple but effective.

Cheers! And it really does. Worse when you think you've finished, and you notice that from a different angle you lose all the shade and highlight;
 here you can see the shadows and highlights on the pauldron trim. But from this angle they seem to have vanished
 (the flash has burned out some of the blending-the transitions don't look so stark irl). Going to have to revisit him only 5 left to finish now, though.

Cheers mate
Dreadnoughts! Finally got a few weapons finished. They are all magnetized, so a fair few yet to finish, but enough done to get them on the table;
Group shot
Weapons
The plasma coils are still a bit rough, but I'll hopefully improve. I am happy with the assault cannons, and I am quite pleased with the Oath of Moment chainfist blade. I've not seen that done before (although I am sure that someone must have thought of it before now) but think that it works and will be doing the same on any future chain swords in the army. I'll take individual pictures of the dreads soon.
Let me know what you think. Back on with the Reavers next.

Loving the dreads, that relic one is looking like he’s embracing chaos nicely. The oath of the moment chainfist is a really neat touch especially with the Eye of Horus mid way though

@ Gobert cheers mate. Your kind words are much appreciated.
I have printed 3 heads at 120% to go into the final contemptor, which I think will be painted in the black of the justaerin colours. Which do you think looks best;
Any input would be great as I genuinely don't know which to use.

I think number 2 is best, with #1 close behind.

1, 2, 3
1 fits the size the best.
2 looks more SoH-y.
3 is not doing anything for me.

Thanks all for the input; I do really appreciate it Looks like it will be head 1, then.
Now for some stuff that's finished
Reavers
I love this unit. They just look like reavers are supposed to look. Brutal and swift.
Contemptors
Again, really pleased with these. Any comments or votes would be hugely appreciated.
So on the work table now is a proteus to deliver the reavers, 2 leviathans to finish, a Praetor for the monthly competition, a kratos, and 20 more tactical marines (well under way) plus all the remaining contemptor weapons. When that's all done, I can move onto some resin kits...

Reavers look awesome! Love the red you've managed on the shoulder pads especially

Looking good jamesy. The Contemptors and Reavers are both excellent, the splashes of red are the highlights for me. The glowing barrels on the first dread win it for me though. Looking forward to seeing the Land Raider soon

Cheers both.
Been a bit of a while since my SoH got any attention, it's been a busy year. My attention has drifted back towards them, however, with a few steps forward on a few different bits. Had this conversion in mind from the beginning, and with a few base toppers that I printed, finally got around to putting him together;
Just a head swap for the reaver head (the one that comes with is awful) and Khârn's cleaver, but I think that it makes for a much meaner looking SoH captain. Let me know what you think. Still deciding between green or black for the armour. Leaning towards green.

That is sweet! Loving the removed hand, the cleaver will look cool dripping in blood too.

Cheers mate. I'd definitely intended to give him a splatter. I've never tried doing the uhu blood drips; now might be the time.

I have started building the two units of ten justaerin that will form the core of the overall army. Made a couple of minor changes from the test cataphractii from before, mostly reducing the number of red plates and speeding up the process for the initial layers of highlights on the black.
I am happy enough with how he's come out. Claws need finishing, as does the base, then just 19 more to go.

That is cool! What colours did you use to paint the black?

Cheers mate; just the classic Abaddon black-Dark Reaper-Thunderhawk blue-Russ Grey-Blue horror then brown panel liner. Drybrushed the DR and THB to make the armour look a bit rougher then edged with the rest. Quick and easy. Looks smoother irl than in the picture, but I've never been able to get good pictures that look the same.

Nice, it looks good to me and the texture gives a nice beaten up aesthetic that works well for 30k
