It’s a shame that you don’t think you’ll finish the engine. It’s already looking cool, that base is fantastic, it certainly looks like a nice sewer!

I managed to get the cannon done on time, after all. (With the one day extension, but who's counting?)
Thanks, Gobert. painted the base and the rest of the cart yesterday. Today was a few touch-ups and the crew. There still are a few touchups I have already seen in the pictures, but I'm too exhausted to do it tonight.
I planned originally to put all of my Skaven on a similar sewer base. But, then I bought some used models on ebay. Now I have two more warp lightning cannons, two doomwheels, nine Stormfiends, A Grey Seer on the great bell, a regular Grey Seer, 3 Warlock Bombadiers, 40 Plague monks and 80 clan rats. Plus a Verminlord Warpseer and another unbuilt verminlord that will arrive in the next couple of days.
That's 138 bases left to make, and I think already over 3,000 points. Much is not built, and none of it is painted, save for the one warp cannon.
Plus, I want to convert some of the Skyre Acolytes, since the actual models are $15 a piece. having one of the plague furnace that is the other conversion option from the bell cart wouldn't hurt, and another 40 plague monks would also be nice. Buying another of the start collecting Pestilens boxes is the best financial deal, but still an investment.
I'll probably do some form of a similar base, but it will have to be simplified. Maybe I'll get a GS roller to help with the cobblestone. This hand-crafting individual stones has to go.
I didn't know what the globe thing on the back of the cannon was, but I kind of thought it looked like a still, for the production of home brew alcohol. In this case, however, I'm seeing it as s distillation of a warp-fluid by product of running the cannon. Capture that fluid and you've got a batch of Warp Juice. If you live through the battle, you'll be able to get . Waste not, want not, right? Or in this case: waste not, get wasted.

What a great piece, really happy you got the extension. That should net you quite a few votes! Love all the work on the details, the base is superb (nice OSL) and the colors of the cannon contrast nicely with the rustic cart.

Really nice work on your store piece DJ. The shelving units look just perfect inside of it, looking forward to seeing more progress on it.
The lightning cannon looks great too, I like the subtle reflection of the wyrdstone tip on that metal lightning bolt thing above it. That base and OSL are excellent too, it makes me morbidly curious of what such a foul looking sewer would smell like.

Some phone shots of the store. i need to make a sign for front with the name of the store, and a cash register. I added some graffiti. MacPhail, your name was the first I was going to paint, but since you were judging the competition last round, it seemed like it would be in poor taste. I also painted a bloody handprint on the inside of the window. Don't go in there!
Some newspapers blown around everywhere. A few tufts growing up through the cracks in the sidewalk.
It needs some more graffiti tags, and then to take some real pictures.

Wow! I'm honored and super impressed. So many excellent little details... the handprint, the advertisements, scattered trash. When I saw that door chain my brain filled in the rattle-chime of the door on the Tipsy Fox liquor store from when I was a kid. That dumpster is fabulous... great rust effects there. I can't wait to see the finished photos!

My LoER entry is done. It was a really fun project. I'm pleased with how it came out.
I give you: "Roadside Convenience"
The name is a nod to the book, Roadside Picnic, that was the basis/inspiration for the game, Zona Alpha, for which the build is mainly intended. It could be used in any post-apocalyptic setting, however.
The roof is removable so the interior is playable.
Wide shots of all four sides: (spoilered because they are perhaps not so interesting, but included to show the big picture)
One of the themes of the LoER competition is detail. Here are some shots of some crafting details I put into it.
Storeroom door, complete with doorknob and hinges. Knob is a little connecting bit of a toy, the hinges are matchbox car axles and card stock.
Water shutoff access. The pipes are cotton swabs, the handle is cardboard and the latch to release the cover is also cut out and fashioned from card. A wip shot is available earlier in the blog.
Here is a shot up at the ruined ceiling. You can see rivets on the support beams, as well as small holes punched to make the frame for the ceiling tiles.
The dumpster has hinges cut out of card stock and wrapped around a cotton swab.
A rusty vent cover and some posters make for interesting detail on the interior walls.
Someone seems to have already made off with the cash register, but they left behind a stack of receipts.
And, you can't have a collapsed roof without having some rubble on the floor.
You can see it best on the shelf through the window, but I crafted supports for each of the shelves.
Bricks showing through the wall, and this neat little dumpster.
I also included minute details while painting:
As illustration of the point that you can't ever have anything nice, without someone coming along to mess it up: some knuckle heads came along and sprayed graffiti all over it.
Several little trickles of paint running down the wall.
Dirt, dust, rocks, etc. around on the ground. Newspaper pages have blown all over. Tufts of wild grasses push up between cracks in the pavement.
A bloody hand print on the front window.
There are also some thematic elements for the game. What sort of post-apocalyptic store would have nothing for interested parties to salvage?
A flashlight (torch) on one shelf.
Crowbars always come in handy. They can also be used pretty effectively as melee weapons.
A nice bucket is a good find.
And look at that: the liquid gold of the wasteland, gasoline!
The register may be gone, but paper money is all but useless anyway. Taking that was a rookie move. What else might the amateurs have left behind?
And now an unpainted Mr. Spock will demonstrate scale. He's a 32mm figure.
(also of note, the chain and handle on the front door. This is apparently the only picture that turned out of them.)
He's a bit fuzzy in this one, but a good shot of the dumpster:
Thank you to everyone for all the support and feedback along the way. It was instrumental in keeping me pushing through this thing.

The amount of detail you have included- and the inspired scratchbuilding that went into them- is the very essence of the LoER. Very well done project, not least for having gotten to the 'completed' phase!
Dr. H explained one time that each scene should tell a story and that everything in the scene has its part, essentially a smaller story in the greater one. Thanks very much for your guided tour of this facility, with its _many_ stories, as one would expect.
Using names as part of the graffiti is a nice touch as well. Quite some time ago Camkhieri built a marvelous UnderHive diorama and utilized a fair amount of graffiti in the same manner.
A great scenic and gaming piece.

Thank you for the comments, everyone. It really means a lot.
I started painting up my Skaven army. There are so many rats! I've got 80 clan rats that I started as a first step project. Well, second after the warp cannon. Turns out, painting 80 models is a tedious process. Here they are all primed, and I've started the skin on the face, hands, feet, and tails. The blue was done by the seller of the Skaven I picked up from ebay. I'll keep some of the blue on there. I want to make the armor and cloth pretty rag tag. In the fluff in the battletome, skaven often loot armor from other fallen skaven. I'm applying this logic to their clothing as well. I mean, it's not like a chaotic swarm of rat men are going to set up looms and weave a bunch of matching cloth for a whole army. It could look a bit crazy on the table, but I'm hoping the rat skin and the sewer bases tie everything together.

Assembly-line painting 80 of any model sounds like a nightmare. When I'm doing large units, I do them either five or ten at a time. That way, I can see progress and not get discouraged by the sheer volume of the project.

Woah! 80 rats, that’s a serious batch to paint. At least having the different colours will help reduce some of the monotony once you get past the skin bits. Will you be mixing up the fur colours too? Maybe horizontal groups for accent colours and vertical for fur colours? Is that another Dread i see in the back?

Vejut wrote: I like the little touches like the lost items and especially the door detail!
Glad you like them. I wanted to have some objects that would make rummaging through the store worth while. They're mostly from Anvil miniatures. They have a ton of options for customization, especially in the sci-fi side of things.
Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll wrote:A fantastic scene, it really does tell the stories! Also great Strugatsky reference!
I'm reading the book right now, and quite enjoying it. The idea that aliens would come and not pay us any mind at all is an interesting one.
JoshInJapan wrote:Assembly-line painting 80 of any model sounds like a nightmare. When I'm doing large units, I do them either five or ten at a time. That way, I can see progress and not get discouraged by the sheer volume of the project.
I may have to try that. I'm discouraged by the idea of finishing a group of ten and still having to do seven more groups of ten. But, 80 in a chunk is pretty demoralizing to even look at.
Syro_ wrote:Amazing work on the convenience store, DJ It must feel really good to have that beautiful piece complete. That's quite a force of skaven you are starting on.
It is pretty relieving. It was a lot of work. I haven't really done much else since except for some rat skin.
I put my whole pile of shame-rats into a list builder. Right now on sprue I have about 3,700 points. I made a purchase from a webstore that's going out of business, which may have been a bad decision as I haven't heard anything back yet, but got 50% off another 1,000 points. Hopefully it actually shows up at some point. So much painting to go, but it will be quite the force.
amazingturtles wrote:The store is glorious. Let's hope that spock does ok in the apocalypse.
Yeah, rag tag is the way to go with skaven, i think. Though i like the idea of some rat weavers sewing together old bits of clothing and scraps they've stolen!
Yes, totally. Rats stitching robes and cloaks together from scraps is something I can see for sure. But it would be patchwork, I think. I can't picture rat weavers sitting down and churning out skeins of fine silken cloth. Or rats going to a tailor to get fitted for a new suit to take to battle. A lot of armies I see online all have a similar appearance, all the same color cloaks, for example. It serves to unify them as an army, but doesn't seem like something they'd actually do. I bought a green stuff world cobblestone roller to help with the bases, as I think a common environment could help unify a rag tag army. But, it's been hung up in customs since the 14th.
And I think Mr. Spock is going to stand a pretty good chance. If I can get him actually painted, I was planning to enter him in the monthly competition.
gobert wrote:Woah! 80 rats, that’s a serious batch to paint. At least having the different colours will help reduce some of the monotony once you get past the skin bits. I'm going to mix up the fur colors. Black, brown, grey, a few white. A couple that are combinations of several colors. I don't want to put too much effort into any one clan rat, but I know myself too well to think that I'll just slap them out at minimal standard just to see them done. It's going to be a while before I field a painted army. I was thinking of doing every fifth one black, every fourth of whats left brown an so on.
And no, it's the same dread. Still need to do some finishing touches. Meanwhile, it's standing on the bench staring at me.

Assuming I get everything, we're looking at:
80 Clan Rats - These guys are battleline. All built and primed. I can do units of 20, of two of 20 and one of 40. Depending on the buildout.
120 Plague Monks - They can be battleline, under the right conditions. All on sprue, and/or not here yet.
I'm thinking of converting some of these into Skryre Acolytes, which throw warp gas grenades. They're $15 US for one model from GW. I'm leaning toward 80 Monks, 40 Acolytes. Not sure.
9 Stormfiends - I think these could also be battleline, but only if I don't field either of the above units. I'd probably run on unit of six under most conditions. These are on sprue as well.
4 Warp Lightning Cannons - Three built, one painted. One more on the way.
2 Doomwheels. Likely wouldn't field these in any game I was taking seriously, but they seem like a weird and good time. One built, one on sprue.
1 Grey Seer on Screaming Bell - I'd use it as the general. Big and cool looking. Partially built.
1 Plague Furnace - The other build option that comes with the Screaming Bell kit. Not here yet.
2 of the Vermin Lords. One that was assembled as a Warpseer Verminlord by the Ebay seller, one more new in box. I haven't decided which option I'll go with him, probably a Lord Screech Verminking.
The Vermin Lords are cool because they get a command ability even if they aren't your general. And, they're giant rat demon things.
1 Grey Seer. A wizard on foot. Looks cool, but will be lost in a sea of rat bodies and monsters. Built, but still grey plastic.
3 Warlock Bombadiers. One built and primed, two on sprue.
I want to convert one to an Arch-Warock. Get a couple different spell options that way.
So, 223 models all together for around 4,700 points

Post by: inmygravenimage
Wow. Hats off , that's a lot of rats. I've been painting hordes of Brimstone figs, but at least there's a bit of variety there. What i tend to do when large-scale batch painting is take one colour and use that across a whole set of figs at once, but not necessarily in the same place: so for example I'm painting cowboy characters by using the same brown on different bits of cloth across 20+ figs. Gives visual unity without identikit painting, which can be pretty soul-,, destroying!
126263
Post by: DJJazzyJeff
I decided that painting the fur based off the primer color might make things easier. So, all the black and the white fur clan rats have their fur done. The pictures don't look all that different, but if you look closely you can see. And, I needed to post something because I am feeling like there is no progress happening. I still need to do the brown fur on the purple and blue rats, paint the clothing and then rust up the armor. A quick pass with Agrax Earthshade and maybe a touch of highlight here or there and then they'll be done. Except for bases. But, I got a Greenstuff roller now so that should go a lot faster.
And, I've been showing off pictures of my minis and terrain at work, and a couple of my colleagues came over the other day because they wanted to see and learn the process. I have a bunch of Plague Monks on sprue so it seemed convenient to let them each build and paint one as I worked through the process as an example. They aren't done yet, but we'll get together again soon to finish. Then I'll have 3 of the 120 monks done.
Speaking of terrain, the LoER competition includes a public vote component. If you have been following my progress and want to see the other entries, possibly vote for your favorite, you can find the vote thread here.

I'm feeling your cobblestone pain just now with Moonstone AND Forbidden Fortress but with the sheer quantity your doing, I'd suggest maybe a brown-grey prime and then drybrush a texture paint (astrogranite) followed by a lighter dry colour eg (dawnstone) - keep it fast and simple.
106010
Post by: Meer_Cat
Maybe not as fast as is needed here, but the method I got from the innerwebz/YUUTUUUUBE can be 'production lined' pretty easy:
Flat black basecoat
Dry brush everything dark brown or grey
Pick out 50% of stones with a light brown or grey
Pick out 25% of remaining stones with the opposite (light brown or grey)
Heavily wash with el cheapo black wash
It goes more fastlier than you might think, but like I say, maybe not fast enough.
Good luck!

I completed the paint on the stone bases. Something to the effect of what you suggested Meer_Cat, some rattle can work, some washes and some dry brushing. A few more rats mostly done. Some clothing color on a few more squads, some metal rust, and then eyes and teeth all down the line. Glue them on, add some osl green lighting effects to unify them and tie them into the other pieces I have and they're done.
I also started work on some bad guys from Cursed City for this month's painting challenge.

The bases look ace (not the musical group Ace of Base ), really came out well and do not look mass-produced, lots of character in each. The undead ogres are already impressive, good look wrapping up for the submission. Rock on!

Well, 80 Clanrats are basically done. The only thing that remains is the green, glowing sewer goo.
I just finished paints 160 red eyes, and 80 sets of whitish teeth. Phew, need sleep. (pictures taken before the eyes, teeth, etc.)
There are three specific models within a unit of clanrats. You're allowed 1 in every 20 for each.
They are the Clawleader, the Clanrat Standard Bearer, and the Clanrat Bell-ringer. The bell ringers are holding bells instead of spears, and allow +2 to run rolls.
The Clawleaders have a little crest on their helms. But, since I bought most of them used on ebay, they didn't include that little piece. I only had the one that came with my original set. So, I improvised. Each turned out better than the last. I gave one a plume of feathers. Another has horns on their helmet. But, I didn't want it to look too much like a viking, so I turned them. It has a definite Loki vibe, and I quite like it. The last has a human skull on a spike, kind of like the orc in LOTR. It may be my favorite of the four. The spike placement turned out perfectly.
Then, the standard bearers are carrying big flag banners. I freehanded some sigils on the flags. I tried to make them all things that would attract rats, while also not taking it too seriously.
So, I can field four units of 20 each, two of 40 each, one of 60 and one of 20, etc. I guess two units of 60 and one of 20 would be just fine, so I may need to get another 40-60 clanrats, but . . . probably not going to happen any time soon. Now that the 80 clanrats are essentially done, the 80 Plague Monks I have on sprue are looming.
Definitely feeling some love for some heroes or something else before I dive into them. Well, anyway, the pictures will all follow, so here we go.
Thanks for reading, watching, etc.

Very nicely done (huge) group of figures!
I like how you varied the colors of the cowls- for such a large group with relatively similar outlines (that ratly hunched over posture) this provides an element of color that makes the whole unit pop without detracting from the awesome totality of the whole group, and allowing individuals- like your banner-rats- to stand out if focused on individually.
Really nice job and a tremendous effort.

I've been pretty quiet for a minute. I started a new teaching job. I got hired the day before school started, so that made for a crazy couple of weeks. We're in person, which is a nice change from online remote learning, but makes for its own set of challenges. I'm teaching art at what we in the states call a middle school (ages 10-14 roughly). It's the school kids go to during the throws of puberty. But it is so awesome to be able to apply my artistic talent to my job. Then, MrsJazzyJeff went to Rome, Italy for business. The travel restrictions were at a low point, and we're both vaccinated, so I tagged along for a little pleasure. Ate a lot of pizza, drank a lot of Italian beer, and generally had a great time. Saw the Colloseum, the Pantheon, and the Pope from his window. The rest of September has been a bit of a blur.
But, somewhere in there I managed to finish the clan rats! The pictures didn't turn out as well as I would have liked, but here's a bit of a photo dump. Included is parts I'm sorting and starting on my 80 plague monks. Well, currently only 67. There has to be another sprue around here somewhere . . .

Just about finished with my screaming bell. A few more details here and there, and then I need to base it.
Really pleased with the Grey Seer, the cloak turned out well, imo.
The Rate Ogre is not 100% done, but getting pretty close.
The flames and the bell itself turned out all right. Not completely sold on the effects, but not sure what else to do.
In other news, I blocked in some base colors for a few of the other Cursed City Heroes.
I'm feeling a definite "Clue" vibe here. If the elf I already did is "Mr." Green, then here are Miss Scarlet, Prof. Plum and "Ms." Peacock. A little gender bending, of course.
and started a few more of the baddies:
Not pictured, I'm assembling parts for a new terrain piece.
All over the place in the hobby at the moment.
The mess and piles of projects are driving Mrs. Jazzy Jeff a little crazy. But, if my marriage survives it, I'll have some cool stuff cranked out soon.

The Screaming Bell is done! I think. Except for the base, which I haven't started. And then the sewer osl effect, of course. Still, an accomplishment.
Also finished a couple more baddies from Cursed City. They've been done for a little while, but got their bases done.
Did some work on another of the CC heroes. I tried some nmm silver on his armor, etc. I used the same purple as his clothes for the base color and I'm not too happy about it. In fact, I'm a little disheartened and want to just tmm it over the top. Trying to resist that urge, but we'll see.

Next up in the painting queue is a Verminlord Warpseer, since I'm putting off batch painting my plague monks.
He'll have black fur, deer-like antlers, bloody runes carved into his arms, and a glowing purple warp energy crystal ball in his hand.
I'm not sure what to do with his armor. The clan rats, etc. are pretty random in their armor. The Greyseer priest has purple robes, which tracks with his devotion to chaos and the warp, since I made my warp crystals purple. I'm leaning toward something similar with this guy, since he's a warp-wizard-demon-thing. Purple material in his loin cloth, probably make the tassel on his spear thing purple. But, where I'm stuck is whether to make his armor look like leather sewn together, steel plates, copper like the bells, painted some variation of purple, or a patchwork assortment of the above.
Anyone want to weigh in on the decision?
I'm happy with the antlers.
The purple osl and the orb look a little better irl than in this picture, but still need some work. The signature green sewer osl will also come in the play so he's going to be lit up from above and below. I'm excited to work the competing osl sources. Wish me luck!

Yeah, I don’t blame you for putting off the batch painting! Procrastinating via the Verminlord is a good idea. I’m looking forward to the competing OSL, as you know I’m partial to a bit of green and purple! As for his armour, patchwork had me sold, but a bit of verdigris sounds great too.

There is a Elven archer from LoTR, and she will be hunting an Elk that was 3D printed, though not by me. Haven’t taken that plunge yet.
And yes, the marines are making a comeback. There is a bike squad on the table now, and a couple last minute bids won me some auctions and I now have two Primaris Repulsor tanks. One on sprue, and one built and painted green. I may field it as a loan from the salamanders until I can get it painted, but more likely I’ll wait until it’s the proper red.

They are sneaky for sure. Though, to get that close to an elk you really have to be.
gobert wrote:Looking great Jazzy! Hopefully you’ve managed to fix the leak ready for the second pour
i haven't yet, though I know where it leaked from.
It's been a bit crazy around here. We had some really strong winds, over 100 mph. For those not familiar with the U.S.'s stubborn measurement system, that's over 160 kph. Gusts are classified as "hurricane force winds" once they reach 75 mph.
In the middle of these winds, a couple of grass fires started in the fields nearby. It had been 233 days since we'd had snow at that point, so the fires tore through some very dry terrain. The next town over from us was hit pretty bad, and the town over from that got pretty much leveled. We weren't evacuated from our home, but we packed up some things just in case. At first, responders were not even bothering to fight the fire but were just trying to get people out. So far, even though some 991 structures were destroyed and many more damaged, there has been no reported loss of life, and only three missing persons.
Mrs. Jazzy Jeff mostly grabbed photo albums and boxes of the kids' artwork from when they were little. I packed this:
I don't mean to make light of a tragic situation, but sometimes if you don't laugh, you cry.
We are safe and out house is undamaged. Mrs. Jazzy and I both teach at schools in the affected area, though, so many families of our students are displaced from their homes, if their homes didn't burn down. Still plenty of downed power lines, structural damage, hot spots, etc.
Just a couple nights prior to all that excitement, MacPhail came over and we played a 1,000 point game of 40K. His Sisters vs my Marines to see who truly bore the Emperors' favor. It was my first actual game so, between all the rules checking and datasheet looking up, we called it after about 4 hours and only 3 turns. The ladies got off to a fierce start, but some drop troops were beginning to turn the tide in my favor. I definitely overcommitted at one point and lost my Reivers needlessly, but the Chaplain held out against a swarm of melee blows.
Reivers set up to throw down.
Reivers gone, but Chaplain holding on to the very last.
The Dred took out a transport and most of the squad that piled out. Some flamers snuck around and did pretty serious damage to the marines hiding behind the tanks. Then his walker and mine got into some fisticuffs. Red Dread blew up, incinerating all in range save my Captain alone.
Suppressors and Terminators dropping in to blast MacPhail off of an objective. The last sister there ended up running for her life.
And that's about where we ended it. I love the painting/modeling side of the hobby, and it would still be worth it to me to continue to pursue, but I'm glad that I like the game, too. It makes it easier to buy models. (Not that I needed an excuse).
Speaking of the hobby, I did get a little hobby time after things settled down and it finally snowed, and did some freehand work on the Red Dread Redemptor. It needs a little clean-up, but the shoulder pauldron is coming along.
Anyway, thanks for tuning in.

I've had a few productive days recently, even though RL is being a bit of a pain in the
Started a couple of the characters from Stuffed Fables. They are a far cry from FeltMonkey's beautiful rendition, Found here but they aren't done yet either, so who knows?
I'm having a lot of fun with them. There is something about them that I absolutely love, and have wanted the game since FeltMonkey entered that piece how ever many years ago it was.
I got some vehicles base painted.
And did some freehand work on them, including the other shoulder pauldron of the Red Dred Redemptor, a pin-up cowgirl.
I've also been looking at a lot of nose art from fighter planes. I have a bigger piece in the works, but here are a couple I've done so far.
This is a recreation of art from an actual French fighter plane from WWI.
Then I found a WWII flying fortress called the Dragon Wagon, and got inspired to paint the logo of a friend of mine's company. They make the Draggon Wagon, an all-terrain disc golf cart.
It came out a little funky, and I'm still deciding whether or not to keep it. I also might do it on the other tank. So many decisions. Anyway, here's what it looks like right now.
Progress continues on the bikers as well, but I have no photos at the moment. I'm going to try to wrap up the basing on the 3 bikes, the dred, and may be the repulsor and impulsor all at the same time. I'll share more pics at that point. And sooner or later I have to quit putting of the horde of plague monks I have primed.

I'm thinking of putting it on my other vehicle, instead. I put it on the Repulsor, but think it would fit better on the Impulsor. It's more of a transport, where the Repulsor is more of a big tank. We'll see how it comes out and then I'll decide.
More Fables to come.

Thanks, Viterbi. That little Elephant is my most favorite thing.
I have another couple freehands coming, so stay tuned.
Meanwhile, I started on my LoER project. Finally. Only two weeks left, it's sort of time.
I have some photos of it. I built ladders from chip board. I need some ways to get up to the upper level. Maybe a series of ramps?
Also, a kickstarter that I backed two years ago finally arrived. Some cool graveyard terrain. I'm excited to get to it, but at the same time I have other projects going. It will likely have to wait.
Although at the same time, it would make a killer back drop for some games of Cursed City. So, maybe that will bump both of those projects up the que.

I haven't posted in a while, but I've been busy painting. I'm just going to put this all as a photo dump.
I went a bit of a different direction with the LoER terrain piece. I'm going to see if I can find the motivation to finish it for the next challenge. Four months doesn't seem too far off.
It's now a series of modular towers, stairs and bridges. The factory piece and the tower are still on the table, so I'll probably build a half stair or something to connect the two. I posed some space marines against some skaven for photo purposes. It's probably heresy on some level to combine the two. But, I don't see the Skaven worrying much about heresy, and I see the Space Marines shooting any xenos/heretical forces they come across and worrying about the heretical consequences later.
I also have some more freehand on the vehicles. A two-headed eagle flying against a sun set, and a second crack at the Dragon Wagon logo on the Impulsor. I like this one much better and painted over the first one on the other tank. I've got a lot of little fiddly bits and weapons to paint, still.
And, I finished all of the heroes from the Stuffed Fables game painted up. Flops, Lumpy, Stitch, Theodora, Lionel, and Piggle are set to bash some nightmares.
Not pictured: Three gnawholes built, the holes and warp energies are painted. The rigging around them built and primed.
The Skaven plague priests I built and primed that have been sitting on my desk have been started. I base coated about 30 of them in the past couple of days.

Great job on stuffed fables minis, they came out fantastically well! Lots of nice blended highlights and the carpets on their bases look cool.
The freehand on the mechanised units look great too. Loving how modular the necromunda stuff looks to be, good luck getting it done for the comp

Thank you. I realized I didn't add any shadow to the little rabbit's base once I took these pictures. Still so many baddies from the game to paint, but I'm enjoying this set.
The terrain is 100% modular. It has some variations of my own, but it's heavily based on a Wyloch's Armory video. Each walkway, tower, stair, and railing comes off and connects to anywhere else.
youwashock wrote:Nice work on the new freehands. The stuffies look great. I love the lion and the elephant with the tenderizer.
The elephant is my favorite, but the lion is a close second.

Haha. It's a little more colorful than I planned, but I like it.
Did some more work on the terrain. I have a couple more towers put together. I have about 24 more railing sections in the works. I need another 2-3 stairs and probably about a dozen more railings after that.
Cheers,

Strap in, everyone. This is going to be quite the update.
This week has been my Spring Break from school. Mrs. JazzyJeff, who is also a teacher, had hers last week. The downside is that we didn't get to go anywhere together, but the upside is that I've had lots of time for the hobby. It's warm outside, warm enough to spray prime, but not warm enough to do all of the spring cleaning/yard tasks I would have had if this were May.
I have worked on a lot of different things, and finished very few of them. Alright, here goes:
First of all,
Vejut wrote:Necromunda board is coming along. Thats a lot of planned railings...
Yes it is. I cut strip out of a whole sheet of chip board, and assemble them in a batch. Then it's just a matter of cutting them apart.
Captain Brown wrote:Get painting then DJJazzyJeff, nothing says dystopia like graffiti on every possible surface.

CB
PS: And I know you can do that graffiti.
gobert wrote:Yeah, CB is right, get slapping on some graffiti!
Well, I have a few more painting steps to go before I get to the graffiti, but thank you both for the encouragement.
I did get some spray can rust effects going.
I'll do some more rust brush work, then cover it all up with chipping medium and paint it metal. I haven't really tried it before, so I'm hoping to meet with success.
I need to find a simple solution to reinforce the tabs on all the modular pieces. I payed a game against MacPhail last week on his Spring Break and some of the tabs are already showing wear and tear.
Had some friends over and got some positive feedback about the diorama piece I made for Mrs. Jazzy. So, between that and all the posts and videos out about Adepticon and the Golden Demon, I decided to make another diorama. I don't think I have the chops to stand up for a GD competition or anything, but a man can dream.
A look through my available models brought out this arrangement.
A Golden Girl surrounded by grim grinning ghosts. Could be a fun little set up.
I did some gs work to expand the ghostly trails of some of the nighthaunts. It'll give the scene some depth and layers.
Glued a few of them together as well.
The plan is to have her blasting some sort oof energy burst outward from herself and all of these ghosties swarming around her.
I got just the barest start to slapping some paint down, and am already not at all happy with it.
Back to the drawing board.
In other news:
I got some baddies primed for Stuffed Fables.
There are some transfers printed to make hazard tokens for Gaslands. I'm going to mod podge those onto bottle caps. I'm envisioning them something like Nuka-Cola caps in Fallout, but less like currency and more like . . . hazard tokens.
And speaking of Gaslands, I was inspired to pull a bunch of cars out and arrange them on the bench.
Unfortunately, that is as far as the muse has led me up to this point.
Got some Skaven Gnawholes painted up.
(Not pictured is the third one.)
The scaffolding is base coated.
They are in a box with all 76 of my Plague Monks and 20 Skryre Acolytes. I started throwing some base coats on cloaks there as well.
(Ooh, you can just see the third gnawhole peeking out from around the box!)
Also pictured are the bottle caps I mentioned earlier, the only space marine I still own on a sprue, and all sorts of other treasures. Did I mention I cleaned up the bench recently?
Additionally, I glued and did some gs work to this beauty, Khanjiri, the World Breaker from Reaper Bones.
I was talking to my brother about wanting to do some larger figures. I was thinking along the lines of 75mm models or busts, but he sent me this. Certainly not going to complain.
Here she faces off with the other monstrosity on my tabletop, Truckzilla!
A little love and fuel from a staple in my collection, my favorite, 90 Shilling.
And finally, while they need basing, they are the one thing closest to done.
The skeletons from Cursed City. Some really fun rusty bits all over.
Thanks for tuning in, everyone. What a ride!

A good spread of things, like you said. Necromunda is looking solid. I feel you on the "I just started picking a scheme and I already hate it." Not sure what to do to help, but I definitely feel you. Likewise with the "arranging everything up and then running out of gas", but sometimes the first step is just figuring out who goes with what and where the themes will be. Or just leaving them where you can see them and it bothers you into actually painting them up, that too. Gnawholes look great, and the skellies do look like rusty fun--almost there on those! Nice all around!

Thanks. It was a big update. Oh, and I mis-typed. The name on the box is Khanjira, not Khanjiri.

I have been looking at a lot of pictures of nighthaunts, and of ghosts from other sources. I'm most feeling the old-school Grim Grinning Ghosts from Disney's Haunted Mansion. I'll update when I get some work done on them. Having an idea and putting it into practice are two different things . . .

Hang in there. Only a couple more months until we're all seasonally unemployed. I think the night haunts look super cool. I don't play their army, nor do I really plan on getting more of the army. So, I figured I'll paint these ones up and if I ever change my mind down the road I can always buy more. It's only m-m-money.
gobert wrote:Great dump of progress! Those skeletons look awesome, how far through the set are you? The nighthaunt diorama sounds intriguing too
I have finished painting two of the heroes and the two ogre guard baddies. The skeletons you see here. I finished basing the big bad vampire and the rest of the heroes. I primed all the rats, bats, objective markers, and all the named villains. I keep going back and forth wanting to hack the tombstones off the backs of the zombies. One or two might have been alright, but every one of them is carrying a tombstone on its back. It all depends on the right set of circumstances. If I get the rest of the game painted and still haven't cut any apart, I'll probably just paint them up as is.
Viterbi wrote:So much fun stuff. The Fables are my clear favorites, but the freehand on those tanks and the start of the AoS scene are also amazing!
Thank you. The Fables have been a really neat project. I had a fun time painting them. I had a couple friends who were going to play the game with me, but then they just had a baby. So, that plan is delayed a bit.
Syro_ wrote:Wow, do you have any plans for what you will do with Khanjiri the World Breaker? Or just building & painting for the fun of it?
No plans as such. I'll start with just painting and go from there.
And a little bit of an update: I did some work on a few Gaslands cars. Turns out having them on the tabletop led to something other than just less space to work.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I passed them on to my students. The mushroom artist said, "Well, I guess the old nerds on your ancient website like my work." Which I guess is a good thing?
I have finished the grey and peeling of masking fluid, which I hated at first , and also a black wash over everything and some rust wash dripping from the patches, which made everything better .
Started the graffiti. Much of it is from photos I took while Mrs. Jazzy Jeff and I were in Rome. Some is from the interwebs. My further plans include more Dakkanauts, and some iconic pieces from local places, mostly Denver.
Thanks for tuning in to the latest batch.

The individual layers- basecoat, paint, weathering, rust, graffiti- are each excellent; the combined, overall effect is tremendous! Well, I got a favorable result on an ebay auction, and now have another army. On a bit of a whim, I decided to get into T'au. I have very little idea what I'll do with them paint-wise, but they arrived yesterday.
I'm sort of thinking about doing the battlesuits in various colors, maybe emulating Gundams, Mechs, or Transformers from various sources. Not at all sure about the tanks or footsoldiers.
Meanwhile, the Emperor would frown upon those Xenos scum hogging all the attention, so I had to take a picture of the Adeptus Brisonius as well.
Having played a total of about 4 games of 40K ever, I would say it's pretty justified to have two armies.

Sadly, I've only played about that many times too, but have three armies and a smattering of troops for a few others Sounds like you are showing self control
84491
Post by: gobert
Yep, definitely restrained there… I have the startings of 4 Marine Armies, plus some Guard, Orks and Necrons. All with very little chance of seeing a battle! That’s not to mention the Warhammer Fantasy armies, 5 I think!
The tau plan seems interesting, Transformers would get my vote, mixing in autobots and decepticons. Would each be painted differently or coloured based on their unit?
126263
Post by: DJJazzyJeff
Thanks, everyone, I feel better. Two 40K and one AoS army doesn't seem so bad. I'll let Mrs. Jazzy Jeff know it could be worse.
My color scheme ideas are all over the place.
I was thinking each robot would get its own color scheme. There are a lot of Mechs out there that have a combination of white, red, blue, and yellow. I could emulate a whole bunch of anime and gundam characters while still keeping fairly cohesive. Having a few other colors on a couple of battlesuits that stood out with their own colors would be kind of cool.
That didn't answer the question, however, of what to do with full units. Foot soldiers don't feel the same as a full on giant mech, so would they get the same treatment? Every warrior has their own unique colors? It fits with some of what I was thinking, but how much unit coherency would/should there be?
There is a painter on the instagrams who goes by hobbycrusaider who has a Tau army that are all Transformers. He's done some conversions with 3D printed heads and wheels, etc. and it looks strictly the business. I didn't want to exactly copy that, and it also seemed like a lot of work before I would get the army up and running.
Then, I got an idea in my head of painting everything black. I could add details in yellow, orange, and red. Make all the T'au symbols look like suns.
Two of the games of 40K I've played were against MacPhail, the other two with his monthly 40K group. They have a campaign system going. It all sounds very official when they talk about it, so I'm sure someone has it figured out. But, performance on the table adds XP and points of other kinds to the unit and the army. I thought I could add color and embellishments as I go based on a unit's performance. Then I could get everything painted to table top standard fairly quickly, but still have room to add detail and design elements throughout the coming months, etc.
I started one, but didn't really like it.
Some things are good. I like the Tau logo, but the red lines look like it's glowing on the inside. It didn't jive with me. But, the unfinished model made me think of Tron Legacy, which is cool.
Then, since I was thinking of Tron I thought about switching it up and going full Tron mode. Everything black, but I'd have to go blue glowing lines. The orange and red are for the "bad guys". And, to quote the line from Tron himself from that movie, "I fight for the Users."
So, I wanted to see one in blue, But, it had been raining a lot here, so I couldn't prime more models black. The original Tron, however, has white or grey suits with glowing lines. So, then I thought maybe I'd make some of the army white, HQ models, the stealth suits, maybe a bigger robot. They'd be a nod to the original. The main core of the force, the foot soldiers, some of the other robots could all be black. They'd be a nod to Legacy.
Since I had a couple primed white already, I started one.
I like where it is headed, but I'm not sold on it as a scheme for the whole army.
There is another painter who goes by tau_enthused on the insta, and he has some Buzz Lightyear-looking Tau that are really colorful. All of his buttons, lights, control panels, knobs, etc. are a variety of colors. A Tron-inspired theme would limit my color palette substantially.
So, I'm afraid I back to the old drawing board. We'll see what comes of it all.

Cool test minis, I really love the black one. The glowing lines are really cool and you could mix up the glow colour based on type of suit or unit. Maybe save the white/grey for the rank and file warriors? If you go with the last scheme I reckon it’d work with a lighter blue in the deepest recesses, it’d have more of a glow that way. Just my 2 cents though
116601
Post by: Syro_
I really like the look of both color schemes you are trying. If you're still experimenting and looking for more, if I ever start a Tau army I plan to use the Star Wars Clone Trooper color scheme for Utapau. Feel free to try it out if you want.
126263
Post by: DJJazzyJeff
I did another test mini. Purple glow on black this time. There are so many little recesses and areas to have glowing. I think I have a plan down, though.
Prime black > paint in recesses with brightest highlight color > paint over some of the highlights, especially farther out with progressively darker versions of the glow color.
Not 100% sold on it, but I have five models in various states of completion already. I guess if I'm going to do something else, I had better figure out what it is.
Not the best picture. I was painting away from my bench as Mrs. Jazzy Jeff was watching tv and I thought I'd be with her. I'll post some more soon.

The previous owner of the Tau army had started a couple bases. Mostly ruined wasteland sort of thing. Skulls and cork rocks, etc. I have something similar on my marines and wanted totally different. They are all plastic cemented down though, so getting them off the base to rebase has been difficult. I've broken most of them at the ankles. Which lets me repose them how I want, but adds an extra step or two worth of work.
I decided to try out some sci fi bases. Ship decking, space station corridors, etc. I got super glue all over my fingers, but here's a couple bases started.

Well, I got home yesterday from vacation. I fully intended to get some work done on the terrain, but then my HH box that I ordered while I was gone was here. It's a hard life what chapter will you be going with?
126263
Post by: DJJazzyJeff
I’m making them all my own chapter. I’m not likely to ever play HH, so they’ll all fit under the regular 40k codex. Rather than two armies, or a founding chapter, or whatever, the Adeptus Brisonius just got 10 new terminators, 40 tactical marines, a new dread and a new tank. That almost doubles my standing force once I get them built and painted. Five termies assembled so far. I’m almost leaning toward buying a Mephiston red primer can to cut a step or two out of the process. But, they cost just a little more than the whole starter box did.
On a related note, has anyone done anything with the praetors? I’m wondering how easily they’ll convert to a chapter ancient, or some such thing.

I renamed my blog Hobby ADHD for a reason: I can't focus very well on any one thing.
I've been making bases for the new batch of marines. I glued down a couple different sands. Some friends of mine got married early-mid Covid. The venue closed down on a Wednesday, and the wedding was that Sunday. Mrs. Jazzy Jeff and I hosted it in the backyard. The practical hobby upshot of that decision was that they gave me all of the "Unity Sand" they bought. For those not familiar with the concept, the bride and groom each pour different color sand into a jar and then make a blend of colors together. It's romantic, or something. Anyway, they overestimated it pretty good and I have four or five jars of various sized sand now.
I also did some knife work on some poxwalkers and a chaos marine, may the blessed Emperor of Mankind reign forever. Glued those bits down and stood the terminators over them. The new dreadnought will be standing with its foot up on the chest of the corpse of a chaos marine, having just sent its tortured essence screaming back into the warp where its treachery belongs.
Then I have the factory terrain to finish, some resin graveyard terrain I bought to paint, and I have to build and paint the Mk VI marines from HH and the tank, the rest of the plague monks, another Verminlord, a plague engine, some stormfiends, and a couple of warp cannons, as well as finish figuring out my Tau scheme.
And if that wasn't enough, I just bought some more marines on ebay. Apparently. I don't really remember doing it, I might have been drunk. I found out I bought it when I got a message from the seller saying it hadn't shipped yet, so hopefully I didn't get scammed. But, assuming I didn't, I got 9 more Assault Intercessors to go with the 6 I got a little while ago. That'll put me to a good spot with those, I think.
I'll keep you updated as to how it turns out.

Woo, been a minute since any update.
Got the beakies and termies primed and base coated. Then, sort of got distracted/ lost interest or a moment. They're still all lined up on my desk though, so hard to ignore.
I put a little extra work into the base of the lil' dred from HH. Built an impact crater and slotted a body into it.
Also got these jetpack dudes finished. Not bad.
Then, I got totally into another project and started on the Sisters Novitiate Killteam. Picked a paint scheme that I like. Though, with the terra cotta flooring, the red osl of the plasma pistol, and the red/orange power sword, I might be overdoing it on the accent color. I might have to vary it a little bit more. Good luck getting through the lines of primed minis, a batch that big can be daunting. The dred is on to a promising start, squashing a dead marine is classic! I like the glow on the assault marines, you’re getting that effect down now. Loving the turquoise on the ladies, it’s a colour I’ve not seen on their robes too often. I think the orange/red accent works on all elements so far, though I’d be tempted to push the sword to have a similar range of colours to the flames

I made a decision about the Tau. I'm going to convert them all into humans. What's that you say? Human conscripts in the T'au order are a thing that happens and every once in a while they let some in? No, silly! I'm not talking about humans who joined the Tau , I'm talking about humans who stole Tau suits and weapons . Just a good ol' bunch of rednecks with big robot suits.
So then, the question became, what would a bunch of rednecks do with fancy equipment? Well, I looked no further than Nascar for inspiration.
Every suit a unique color scheme, tied together by numbers. The only decision I have to make is whether or not to put a bunch of tiny sponsor logos on their suits. Surely in the far future there are companies that profit off of war?!
I'll update with better pictures soon, especially once I get the head swap conversion done. A group of redneck pathfinders are next; stay tuned!

The suits are terrific- excellent work!
Definitely they need corporate sponsorship- one is a natural for Mountain Dew. The lightest colored one is probably sponsored by STP. Red and Yellow can only be the Golden Arches- McDonalds. Purple must be Royal Purple Extended Performance Oil. The suit sponsored by Doritos Inferno spicy chips is obvious. Not sure if the blue suit is Jet Blue or Blue Apron, or both.
You did say Redneck, right?

I have a squad of pathfinders I got in the ebay deal that are already built. I'm going to hold off on them for a moment. I'll have to do foot swaps on them. They only have 4 fingers, but I might just leave them and see if no one notices. They all have helmets on, but I might swap a couple of heads.
I bought some stuff off Anvil Industry some time ago. I built a couple of guys for Zona Alpha, and have enough heads and bodies to make most of a Pathfinder team. I have close to ten heads with beards and trucker hats, or just long hair and mustaches. Pretty good redneck heads all around.
I also bought the Kill Team Chalnath box. I built the sisters, but haven't done anything with the Tau yet. I haven't decided how much to use, and how much to swap out. I'll play around with the kits and see. At least feet and heads.
I thought about making them all essentially the same and modeling them like pit crew. And also making them all different like the robots. I'll play around with them and post some pictures of the results.
JoshInJapan wrote:What a nifty idea!
Thanks, Josh. I won't get bored with a set paint scheme this way. My Skaven are all unique and the bases tie them together. This will sort of be the same. I just didn't think I could paint another 100 sets of red power armor . . .

I did say redneck. I also thought of McD's when I was painting that red and yellow one. I was thinking of making up some Future-ish warhammer type corporations. Sort of like Quentin Tarantino's Red Apple Cigarettes or something. We'll see.
I'm planning on painting the HQ robots as #3 and #8, Dale Earnhart and Jr's cars. I'm not a Nascar fan by any means, but I know enough to know those two guys.
Any way, I'll keep painting. And keep posting. I probably won't finish anything any time soon. That'd just be too out of character.

I hear you. That's one of the many reasons I don't play 40K anymore-- I get bored painting essentially the same model over and over again.

Sweet idea DJ, the NASCAR colours certainly won’t leave you bored of a scheme! The flaming one is my favourite so far, but I reserve judgement until I see the Dales! I personally always liked Jeff Gordon’s DuPont colours. A bit of IndyCar Marlboro Penske and Menards would be cool too.
Pit Crew Pathfinders sounds like a good shout to me. Each squad could be matched to big suit team, maybe using black for their under armour to tie the different squads together?

I've got plenty of inspiration, that's for sure.
It's turning into a bit of a clown fiesta, though. None of the suits match at all or have any unifying scheme. The white with a number os only on the Tau logo, one on the arm, one on the chest. It's hard to see and doesn't unify the unit at all like I thought it would.
Even though my Skaven are eclectic and all different, they look a lot better together because of the huge green glow everywhere. I need something more like that to tie these "Tau" together.
I don't know. Feelin' down about it, but something'll come along. I'm just going to practice my Southern/Redneck phrases and it will all work out. 'Til then, I'll just have to stay as busy as a one legged man in a butt kickin' contest.

I can dig the vibe on not having a unifying theme for the group- they are most excellently painted, but very individualistic. Perhaps that's the unifying theme: these are suits just refurbished and being returned to their units to go back onto active service- they are at the RSOI base/facility (Reception, Staging & Onward Integration). The RSOI gets hit by an overwhelming force and they are scratch organized into a unit and have to hold the line until formed elements can relieve.
But maybe that dog won't hunt, eh?
126263
Post by: DJJazzyJeff
I sniff what you’re stepping in, Meer Cat. But I don’t need help with that. They stole the suits and painted them themselves so that’s good. I need to buy some more weapons and then I can magnetize them. Maybe if I paint the guns the same it’ll look better.
I’m looking for something that ties them a little more together.
I think I’m going to paint some of the under layers and the lenses the same colors, and then if I do all the guns similarly it’ll do the trick.

I got to play some games this weekend. Two Boarding Action fights with some buddies. I brought my marines, and beat a force of Custodes golden boys by about 40 points. He's beaten me our last two games we've played so it felt good to take one from him. The next game I lost against some imperial guard when two squads unloaded their guns into my terminators. He rolled ridiculously well and nearly wiped the squad. Managed to almost win, only 10 or so points behind.
I haven't gotten a lot of hobby time lately. But, the added small efforts over time have gotten me some primed terrain. I'm not sure if I'll have time to finish before the end of the month and that of this round of the LoER Challenge, but we'll see.
Here are some pics of various stages of production. I still have to do all of the rust effects, then chipping medium and gray paint. Then it's only the simple task of free handing all of the graffiti that I like to do. No problem!

The weather cleared up and I took advantage to prime some minis. Another 20 beaky boys and my (theoretically, if I can get it done) entry for the monthly challenge.
A couple of demons for Reign in Hell. My leader is based on "Little Tiffany" from the MIB scene where Will Smith shoots the cardboard cutout of a girl holding quantum physics books. I shaved off her teddy bear and sculpted a gs book in her hands. In the movie, she's wearing red and yellow, but because of the colors I'm doing for the base I'm probably going to switch that up and go a pale blue.
Hope to get some time this week to get the terrain and the demons finished. Both the monthly and the LoER comps end this weekend.

Here is the finished terrain. Well, "finished". The LoER Challenge went up to yesterday, so I had to post something. I still need to do the graffiti, which since it is all freehand, takes a lot of time. I think it's the best part in many ways, but there are many steps before I get there.

But, until I finish my Tau Army, those are the two forces I have.
And, for the monthly challenge I only managed to finish one of the models I planned. She'll have to wait for her Devoted, but here is the Leader of my Reign in Hell cabal.

Still a long way to go on the terrain, and a lot of models sitting in the primed-ready-to-paint queue, but decided on a little palette cleanser. Looking to finish these two for the monthly competition, as I made a whole crap ton of mistakes. And that's an imperial crap ton, mind you, not a metric crap ton.
But, some nice things happening regardless. Tried out painting liquids in glass containers. Not the best result, but I'm pretty happy with it for a first attempt. I had to file some rivets off the dwarf's gun once I realized it wasn't sculpted as glass, but there you go.
Painted the metal with nmm style but using tmm paints. Hope to be able to get them across the finish line.

Thank you, Gobert. Very kind of you to say. I was really impressed with the way his arm came out.
If you like skin, keep your eyes peeled on the blog for what's coming up. I need to take some more photos, but here's an early stage WIP. I just have to get it done before the end of the month.

She's definitely looking at you, Kyoto.
She was sculpted by the people over at https://www.female-miniatures.com/
I bought her as a physical model, but they have their sculpts on My Mini Factory, too, if you have a 3d printer.
There are different options for the model depending on how many layers of clothing she's managed to take off.

Thanks. Me too, I think. I was really jazzed at first. But between the cloth, leather belts, wooden mug, there are a lot of brown/reds in the piece. I need a way to switch it up and bring some life into her. I'm thinking about some glow from a fireplace and shadows, but I don't want to redo what I've already done. Which from the picture, is a little more on her face and then the front of her shirt.

She's not quite done. Still need to pick out a couple of details, the wreath in her hair and the collar about her neck to name a few. There are a couple of transition points, especially on her legs, that need another visit. Might be a while before I get there.

So, base the whole thing in bright, crazy colors. I did turqoise from above, pink from below, and a yellow on the lowest parts of the feet and hands. I even did one more layer after the proof photo just to get down into all the cracks and recesses.
Then, and this part still seems like it wouldn't work even after it did, you only paint the mid tones and highlights. Paint them in the normal colors, leaving your darkest shadows the bright colors. The shadows of the model are not black, or even dark in most cases at all. In the video he used more reds in his undercoat, that really contrasted well with the dark exoskeleton of his big tyranid.
Layer the mid tones, but in degrees of opacity, not in degrees of color from the shadow to the midtone. The bright base color shows through and gives a cool effect to the midtone skin, fur, etc. I used watered down paint of the color I wanted the skin or whatever to be, and just feathered/wet blended it out until it mostly covered, but had some color showing through.
Cover the area that would be the brightest in an opaque version of that same color. It was one, sometimes two passes on most surfaces. I had a regular dab of paint on my palette and a watered down dab and just went back and forth between the two.
Do highlights as usual. This is the step where you can go further to make the mini really pop, or only go as far as tabletop standard if you want.
The whole thing was fast. From primed black, to what you see in the photos was just under three hours of work. I saved so much time not going back and forth darkening and re-establishing my midtones.
It was difficult to see at first, with so many bright colors everywhere, but once you get a midtone/highlight layer on everything, the effect just starts to work.
