Which I appreciate the tip for forming plastic, I've never been a paper banner person but cast plastic ones rarely fit the physics of a conversion (weird wind patterns and whatnot).

Cheers mate The heating plastic banner worked even better than I hoped - and it meant I could avoid that ' flat curtains' look where the flag or banner is hanging straight down like there's no breeze. Those sorts of banners dont look too bad stuck on a backpack with a static, standing model, but on the back of a moving model (like a bike) it just doesnt make sense.

Roknar wrote:One hell of a rescue.

Thanks Roknar

Did some more work on my Son's Son of Infamy model and worked on the highlighting.

Son's son? Son2 of infamy?

Anyway - as I'm sure it shows, none of this is wet blended, as I didnt think I had enough time to really get work it on this model. I've used the 'feathering' light touch method instead, with my focus on getting some 'high contrast' highlighting to work.

They are not great photos tbh - I'll try to take some better ones tomorrow

Let me know what you think

Looking good kt. The blue works well but I feel that the brightest part of the red needs expanding a bit. One lucky son either way!

Nice work, dude. I'm always skeptical of variegated color schemes on paper, but you executed it perfectly. Great brush control. I agree with gobert that the red could be brightened up a bit, it looks like the blue half is a bit more reflective.

Cheers man I think you’re right & I gave the red a gentle touch up. It might be too gentle tbh (I might not have brightened enough) - but I reckon it’s done now. Knowing when to put the brush downing a piece is important to maintain sense of progress.

youwashock wrote:Great paint, as always. Bold scheme.

Thanks youwashock my son had painted half his army as Ultras & the other half as blood angels, so when he asked about a custom scheme I suggested the red/blue split to minimise any repainting

Thanks DQH - hopefully the finished product has brought the red up to where it needs to be I thought the scheme would be fine, but with the highlighting & everything finished it ended up better than I expected!

Anyway- the finished model:

I’m pretty happy with it, I’ve not really worked this hard on highlighting before.

I *think* the red is better here, but maybe its not... let me know what you think. Maybe it’s how I took the photo too... hmmm.

Next time I’ll need to spend more time working out where the light source is to keep things consistent. Oh well.

And of course the obligatory close ups

And we’re almost into March! New month means a new challenge, I’ll pop back in once I know what that’s going to be

Cheers all
KT

March is always, Space Marines. The red on him works very nicely! It pops nicely, only way I think you could get more would be something like a spot white or hairline edge highligh white at a few extreme corners or tops of the orange streaks, but I definitely feel you on the "as far your confident pushing it" thing.

The red looks great! The highlight that runs across the backpack really helps tie the two colors together to a consistent tone. Nice job on the shoulder pads too, love that heraldry.

Amazing to see the finished bike champion, the contrast between "dirty" biker and shiny banner works really well. And agraxing really needs to be a proper verb. How does one contact those oxford dictionary people?
Reiver looks great to, colors work really well together and that's a nice chapter symbol.

Great job KT, the red looks much closer in brightness to the blue now. The contrast of the warmth and cold of the 2 colours makes it hard to tie together, but I think you’ve managed it. The key areas where the 2 colours are on the same plate match well. The chapter symbol is awesome, the colours coming through the stars outline are fantastic

Thanks Vejut I *almost* put white dots on it but pulled back at the last moment lol

Cheers man - I was very careful with the backpack (the line across the top and the dome on the back particularly) as I knew that this was where of the red/blue highlighting would either work well or fail utterly. I was worried about the sizing of the heraldry - so I googled and found a step by step 'how to' guide that helped https://dragoart.com/tut/how-to-draw-infamous-second-son-logo-21218

Thanks Viterbi - appreciate the kind words. As for adding words to the dictionary, according to my limited research (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Surgeon_of_Crowthorne) I believe a person needs to go be sent to a prison for the criminally insane after murdering someone in a delusion and then mutilating themselves. Adding words to the dictionary is surprisingly metal.

Thanks Gobert - thanks and thanks for the recommendation to brighten the red. I'm much happier with it now
When I did the chapter symbol I felt the star just didnt stand out enough, so I traced around it with one of the colours I'd used as a highlight. Glad you like it!

Ok - new month means...

I dont actually know yet.

Ummm....

I know, I know, I have lots of stuff on the pile of shame, but... but. Where possible, I've been trying to tie my monthly activity into either the Iron Warrior discord challenge or the GW model of the month. But this month's IW challenge hasnt been announced, and I've not heard anything about the GW model of the month.

so... I've working on my 'things to do when I've nothing else to do' pile. This normally means Greenstuff work. Ive attached a few wip shots of my 'PoxWalkers' here just so I'm not leaving my blog fallow for too long, but keep in mind that once the challenge is announced I'll put these guys down and may not return for a little while.

Poxwalkers - these were old GW zombies, but I'm giving them a swollen makeover. I'm trying to show that are infested with gross parasites that grow in their bodies and spill out to infect others. Some of these parasites can get quite large...

I think I've posted this guy before? He's finished.

Big Mouth: I think this guy is close to done just a little blending in on the arms. You can see the parasite at the back of his neck with its tendrils entering his eye and nostril.

this guys still wip. Tried for a fungusy growth thing on the back of his arm...

The Bird - just started on this one. Need to work on that hand he has outstretched as he flips the enemy off lol

super swollen I only have a shot of this guys back - I think he's one of the guys I couldnt find a torso for, so I used... old sprue and a tyrranid weapon part I think?

I actually started all these guys (I have twenty to do!) back at the start of 2020 so they are going to take a bit of time for me to get through. I might paint one or two at some stage though just to see how they work out You never know your luck in the big galaxy!

Cheers
KT

Ugh - I typed up a whole post discussing what I am doing at the moment and now I find it didnt post! Doh.

Ok - redoing with - mostly photos:

1) I've been on about a weeks holiday (Coobowie on the Yorke Peninsula, lovely place ). While on leave I worked on a Deathguard model

a good start, lots more to do though

2) the next challenge in the iron warrior discord is 'psychics and priests' - basically any model that can use the psychic round. I'm redoing my old Tzeentch Daemon prince ie

Plan is to do a more 'feathered' model as this feels more tzeentchy - note the wing change

Also replacing the hand holding a staff with a hand holding a book

(finger and thumb swap as I try to make a right hand left)

changing the head a fair bit too - going to give him a bird beak

Going to adjust the head-dress too - not sure what I'm doing with this one though...

Let me know what you think Any cool ideas I should think about?

Love your ideas for repurposing the demon prince, I think you've made good choices to get a more tzeentchian feel. Although as an avid Pratchett fan you have to add a second "z" to the "wizard" in the book

Cool stuff as ever darkkt, the feathery wings are much more tzentch and less night lords. The (I’m assuming) bread tag beak will look cool, though I’ve no idea where to go with the headdress. Scarabs maybe?

Death Guard chappy looks nice too, will he be getting the glowing green from his eye hole?

Thanks
Damn, that would have been a great idea (although I have no idea how the hell I would pull fit another Z in...) anyway, I'm sad to say I covered up the word 'Wizard' with Greenstuff already

gobert wrote:Cool stuff as ever darkkt, the feathery wings are much more tzentch and less night lords. The (I’m assuming) bread tag beak will look cool, though I’ve no idea where to go with the headdress. Scarabs maybe?

Cheers Gobert Death guard will def get some green glow happening, otherwise he wouldnt fit in with the rest of the squad!

Hmmm... I havent done scarabs on the head (yet) but I like the idea of scarabs a lot. The model needs something to really tie the Tzeench feel together...

Progress has been slow - I think I'm dithering a bit really as I try to find a balance between what I want to do and what have the skills to achieve. Its easy to get discouraged by choosing something too challenging for yourself (as you get disappointed with the results), but if you dont try something new you never get better (and you get bored/disappointed with your effort). Sigh....

Lets see where I land I guess. Anyhoo - its pics time!

Spell book:
Things can get breezy in battle, so my DP has a heavy skull & bookmark in place to make sure that he doesnt loose his place:

And whilst its a terribly angled photo, I've added some armature (random soft bits of wire) that will form the basis of a spell effect 'drifting off the pages' . I'm thinking like a miniature 'age of sigmar endless spell effect' with *something* comeing off the pages (lightning, fire, smoke, .... something more interesting...) happy to hear to suggestions at this stage )(although keep in mind I dont want the spell book to 'steal the show' )

I'll keep the book separate from the DP for most of the build I think to get things as accessible as possible for sculpting. Actually, Maybe I'll keep it separate and magnetize it for easy storage... hmmm

Daemon Prince:
Assembled with minimal adjustments:

FYI - Adding those metal wings made me remember how much of a pain in the ass it was the first time I added them. Jeebus... thank you GW for plastic.

I decided he needed a tail.

This is both an aesthetic choice and a cheat - I like the look of it, but it also provides a nice extension of the work I need to do to merge wings with the guy's normal armour. By making the area bigger, I *think* I can do a better job of blending the metal and the flesh. When I was doing the sorcerer on a bike, I extended the GS mutation over the chest armour because the 'fleshy arm sticking out of space marine suit' looked a bit lame.

Fingers crossed that it works lol

And now the work on the head -

I took the step of removing most of the simple headdress part and played around with some different options. Honestly, some of these looked better than the one I eventually ended up with, but they were far too large and probably wouldnt have fit with the wings.

This is what I've settled on

So, let me know what you think

The new horns certainly look cool, better than the original ornament imho. I like how the tail seems to extend up to his helmet too, a nice chaos-y detail. How did you do the base? Did you carve the GS before or after it went off?

Thanks G - whilst I was happy with it at the time, the original helmet suffered from my general impatience. Glad I'm finally having a second crack at it. The base was a little of both - I 'scultped' the soft greenstuff into rough cobblestones, then drew on a symbol and cut that symbol. I wanted it to look like the symbol was carved into an older floor.

The symbol is the Seal of Metatron again - the symbol I used on the front of the chaos sorcerer on a bike. Its both simple to do and suitably 'mystical' to suit

And we have progress!

Did some work on the 'spell effect' coming out of the book - decided I'd go for a spectral demon or spirit coming out of a glowing smoke emanating from the pages...

Hmmmm

Starting to build up the smoke

And then pu tting on some ghostly robes - the next step will be to blend the robes and the smoke to be 'seamless' and to sculpt the claws and sleeves

I did a little more to the base - adding in some candles. These are more rubbish (chuppa chup sticks and bits of plastic tube) cut to size and topped with greenstuff:

Wait a minute... what's that on his belt?

Its my attempt at a scarab! Not sure how happy I am with it at the moment. I'm leaving it so I can get used to the idea. Ultimately if i figure it doesnt work I'll just scrape it off and pretend it never happened.

and finally, some helmet progress:

Let me know what you think

Great trick for making candles. Adds perfect atmosphere. I quite like what's going on with this book!

Hi everyone, thanks for the encouragement Glad to hear the book generally viewed positively - hoping I can keep it heading in the right direction as it progresses

Speaking of progress, it was a pretty productive weekend, as I finished the greenstuff work on the model, started and finished painting the base, and continued my Greenstuff work on the book

Lets start with the... base. Because this is finished. I think.

So I posted this one last time:

Then i did an undercoat of light grey:

(some of the black marker still showed through - but no big deal).

Then I did a few washes of nuln oil:

Then I laid down the magic symbol with blues and white, trying for a very subtle glow effect. I also did the candles in a wraithbone and agrax wash.

And finally, to finish it, I highlighted the candles with a mix of wraithbone and yellow:

I'm thinking its pretty much done right now. thoughts?

The book - was more robe work, not a heap of new stuff to be honest...I did however magnetise the book and the hand:

In this pic you can also see the layered 'crest' I put on the top of his head.

The bottom of the book still needs to be tidied up - but Im focused on the top part first

My connecting work was... less than impressive tbh - but I was silly trying to put two magnets so close together. Lesson learned.

Still - as shoddy as the work was, the guy still holds the book well enough:

Ooh, I added pointy claws to the 'spectre'

And I did a bunch of details on the DP model
work on his back:

I made and added a chain to hang around his leg for... reasons...

I added some rings to his left hand to cover up my shoddy greenstuff work

skull ring

Ring and a decorative chain

fancy work around the wrist:

And (although I dont have a pic right now) I have just undercoated the DP. Its shown up a few little... flaws? I might need to fix those and then re-prime. Better to do it now I guess than ignore them and try to paint around the problem.

And that's where I am. Let me know what you think!

Cheers
KT

excuse me while I try something here:

normally I post pics in order of activity - from stage 1 to stage 5 - but ive found the thumbnail when it shows up on the 'Project Logs' is then always the least impressive. I figured I'd try the alternative by posting the best pic at the top - and then posting progress below.
Marketing 101 baybee!!!!

ahem - back to the blog

Cheers GcG I think its the attention to little detail that are what most people love about GW miniatures, so I try to replicate this as best I can where ever possible. It also helps that adding a little Greenstuff to certain parts covers up ugly joins and unfortunate gaps

gobert wrote:Looking great kt, the chain is amazing! Most people I’ve seen have just used cheap jewellery, so kudos for sculpting yours, impressive!

Thanks G I've used cheap jewelry chain myself in the past - and and given its size it works a treat for larger items (i.e. vehicles or terrain):

the stuff I got however doesnt work well on normal models however, even the really large ones like daemon princes. At 28mm a jewelry chain would be like a shipping anchor chain. You can get proper sized hobby chain, but I'm working on a budget at the moment. (and lets be entirely honest - I just wanted to see if I could make it work )

So, time for the progress update (even though posting the pic at the beginning gives the game away lol) - I've undercoated the head again after smoothing down an error I saw, and have started on the wings as I wanted to try the following tutorial from @savage_ork_guy on instagram (Louise Sugden - a GW illustrator I follow - https://www.instagram.com/p/B81niG5HYJ9/?igshid=hsyrr637q0jm)

Step one - Primer baybee!
Working with the new primer still - light grey. Going to try for a brighter model this time around.

Step two: check the paints I have against the reference pics:

Of course I dont have an airbrush, so we're blending using my wet pallet.

Step three:
Slap that paint down!

Step four (maybe step 7 because I was focusing and forgot to take interim pics):
Check against reference material

Pretty good. Happy with this It's Not exactly the same, but I only wanted to replicate the blended effect, not to copy the exact colour structure of the wings.

Step 8:
re-Post the glamour shots that have already technically been spoiled by posting one of them at the start:

So - overall pretty happy!

But...
The wings need more depth in the textures. I think I'm going to have to go over them with some washes, then rebuild (redo) the blending to brighten it up again, and then do the highlights. If I had been thinking ahead I would have done the washes first, then tried to the blending of colours - there would be less re-work.

Me - that's a pretty tiny problem to be honest, and even if I end up having to re-do the wings completely, I know I can do it (it wasnt hard as it didnt involve being too smooth with the blending - almost dry-brushing really) and I really like the effect.

let me know what you think!
Cheers
KT

Hello and Thanks to everyone for checking it out and commenting

I spent most of my holiday long weekend trapped with enjoying time with family and friends, but I did get a little time to paint and greenstuff the TzDP.

Painting:
I spent an evening on the wings -I decided to follow through and it hit with a wash:
(wet)

(dry)

It knocked back the colour, but really did bring out the depth a lot better.
I then hit it with a gentle dryrbush for highlights.

Hmmm....

Current feeling - I sucessfully added depth, and the drybrushing added some highlights, but it lost some vibrancy - particularly around the dark purple and brighter peach wingtips. Im debating whether to go back and address this or whether I should be happy how it is. I left the wings as is for now anyway, and moved on. No pictures of the rest of the model at this stage as I'm just laying down some base coats and it looks pretty dull to be honest.

More interesting (I hope) is the pop up (as ShadowsandDust described it) spell book.

Firstly, I felt that the bottom of the book was a bit plain. Yes - this is the bottom of the book that will almost be entirely obscured by the hand holding the model. Yes, I am a fool.
As its on the bottom, and details wont really show up I thought might try to do some decorative stuff and practice my greenstuff neatness. The results:

Thinking I was done, I decided to hit it with primer - and immediately reconsidered and got back to work:

The odd 'texture' has only been done on one side - I dont know if this is a good decision or not. as no-one will see it, I'm sure it'll be fine
fingers crossed

I also revisited the face and the body of the spectre. You might recall the face looked like this

I got progressively less happy with this every time I saw it, and decided I needed to make a change. Firstly I worked on a sideways mouth with sharp and irregular teeth (multiple rows), but it just looked... weird. Weird but not chaosy weird.

So I carved it back, leaving in one back row of sideways teeth:

And constructed something different - attempting a 'longer face' or extending jaw:

I feel this works better and I'm pretty happy with how it looks now (even though the nostrils look a bit orky).

You can see on this pic I also added more tattered robes - mostly to tie in some of the rough edges on my greenstuff work.

And finally I thought I would how it looks when I pose it. to be perfectly honest I think its way overbalanced (visually at least) But I'm still pretty happy with it

Let me know what you think! is the more substantial spectral face a good move or a mistake? Happy to hear criticism too
Cheers
KT

More face is good! The proportions are very weird, make it very clear that this is a spell and not an actual creature.

Great job on the GS, really impressive getting such fine details. The revised Daemon looks great. I see what you mean about the balance, if it’d have come out more vertically it might look more evenly balanced. Then again it wouldn’t be as threatening. Great sculpting either way!

Lovely work on the feathers, I think that last drybrush really helped sell the blend of the colors. I'm curious to see how they look next to the rest of the model, depending on how saturated the armor the wings might be fine as they are.

The book and demon both look good, the detail on the cover looks right out of Evil Dead.

I agree - the final drybrush has made it all come together nicely, and whilst less vibrant, it looks far more natural in its cohesiveness

Sculpting is looking great as well

Cheers that was kinda my original goal for the long extended face. I’m much happier with the new face, I reckon it’s got a ‘ghost librarian’ vibe now lol

Who you gunna call?

Thanks! I used very fresh GS so it would stick & The ‘squiggles’ were just tiny worms of gs squished into vaguely interesting shapes with a pointy thing. The star & the Tzeentch symbol were harder & needed a lot of trial, failure & redoing

Thanks mate hadn’t really thought about balance before this build - every new model is a learning experience!

As per the earlier pic I’ve Hit the spectre with the paint, I’m liking it so far I think?

Blue armor is looking nice, and liking that little bit of shoulder pad peeking at the edge there.

9 year old's model is excellent, I'd be pretty happy with that level of result myself.

Thanks Guys

Quick update because Im at work and... probably should be working lol

Progress on the armour:

as a nod to this Tzeentch DP being currently aligned to my Iron Warriors, I figured he needed a few hazard stripes

And some work on the spellbook:

This model marks my first real attempt at NMM - the star on the book, the cables on the armour, and the chain around his leg. Lots of practice still required, and I'm not entirely sure it carries the desired 'metallic' effect across to be honest, but I still like it and I'm going to continue regardless

Cheers all!

The gold is pretty good. I haven't tried NMM myself, but I've always read that the key is to push the darks much darker than you're comfortable with, and push the lights much lighter than you're comfortable with.

Thanks man - push the contrasts hey, sounds like good advice. I'll have to try it on the actual mini itself though because I'm done with the back of the book:

And thank you Don - I'm very happy with the sigil, I think it turned out nicely . I wasnt sure about the hazard stripes when I put it down, but now I've added more yellow Im far more comfortable about how it fits in.

Today's update is for me
One of the benefits I've found from keeping this painting blog is the fact I have something to refer back to if I forget exactly how I have done something. As such, I figure I'll use it to outline my NMM steps for my own future reference:

Now, my current process has a lot of opportunity for improvement, but I'm happy with the current results as a first attempt and keeping this record will give me a base to work from.

Paints:

And just a couple of broader progress shots

I think its getting there now... let me know what you think!

Thanks folks, Gotta say I was getting discouraged at the start of this month - Converting these large metal minis is not an awesome experience tbh - but I'm loving how the paint is going down (and thus way more updates)

I think I'm done with my gold nmm now:

Here's a close up of various nmm parts:

Full body shot:

this shows off the front view and the helmet crest

wrist and Hand-bling (that I greenstuffed on to hide the crappy joins):

Sword hilt and spurs

And another full body and spellbook shot

I'm now onto the sword blade, the patch of human skin around his leg and other misc final details (the yellow cable under his arm). Hoping that I'll have the guy done in a week tops!

Cheers all

Thanks IGtR, I'm very happy with the NMM, lots more to learn but I felt good watching it come together . Painting the base rim black though... hmmm... I tend to keep the bases rimmed in grey, but maybe its time to try something new. I'm going to leave this as is, but I might try it on my next few models and see how it goes.

gobert wrote:Looking great KT, the Nmm and armour highlights are the winners in terms of painting. The beakie helmet and of course the book are the sculpting wins imho! What next?

Thanks Gobert - as always, I appreciate the kind words I do like the opportunity to try new things with the sculpting as well as the painting, and trying to get the book guy to look 'kinda ghostly' (instead of nurgly) was a challenge.

What next?... well I'll show some stuff i'm working on below, but as a quick one I punched out the April Model of the Month over two short nights recently - I present the Pink Horror!

Now, there's nothing too exciting with this guy - although I think its perfectly serviceable and tabletop ready - but it was my first attempt to paint a miniature almost entirely in contrast paint. That stuff's got a learning curve for sure, but I can see the benefits of it re very vivid colours and quick yet solid results.

Don Qui Hotep wrote:Fantastic work as always, my dude. Those brights are popping off of the armor. I really like how the glowing bits on the sword, shoulderpad, and psychic manifestation tie together.

Thank you DQH I'm glad you noticed these 3 glowing bits as the placement of these 'points of focus' was intentional! Late last year I showed my Death Guard model of the month to the dude at my FLGS and he pointed out that I'd managed to accidentally hit some painting rule about spot or focus colours (my term). From what I recall about the 10 second discussion he was saying that having 3 points of a colour that will attract focus on a model will help tie that colour into the model as a whole instead of (possibly) distracting from the model.

In the death guard model I'd gotten the three points of Tesseract Glow (although one of those is well hidden from most angles lol), whilst in the DP it was the aethermatic blue with white highlights

He didnt mention using it on the base as well, but I wanted that mystical circle to glow and having a different glow colour would have been distracting imo.

Ok - so what now? well I'm between challenges (again) so I've attempted to point my ADHD addled mind to finishing some of my older half painted projects. recently Ive spent some time on my old metal Raptors - finally getting some hazard stripes on them and moving them towards finished.

Not a great shot but here is how I had left them for the last decade:

It's worth remembering that I had actually considered these finished back in 2009 -

but now... not so much. I still like the red and the bronze or brass colour, but I think they are almost done - not genuinely finished. Time to fix that!

Stage one - the yellowing:

Stage two - time for stripes:

Stage 3 - all the other little bits that need to happen to call it done - highlighting, glowing, adding some super subtle patina around the rivets (maybe too subtle) etc
This lad is actually *FINISHED* and so far he's the only one.

The rest are a lot closer than they were though

So let me know what you think! I'm expecting the next challenge to drop pretty soon, so I may put these guys down again soon, still - feeling pretty good about having finally gotten them moving.
Cheers
KT

Mr 9 (left), Me (centre), Ms 7 (right)

We also went and picked up this month's model - the Gravelords

And I have a new competition - another two month challenge this one is either Slaanesh or Nurgle, Perfect opportunity to finish off another Daemon Prince!:

And that's it for now, back to work for me!

Hi Gobert - thanks

yes I did redo the face although I ummed and ahhhed about it first. The old 'face' kind of had a smooth and shiny tanned leather look that I didnt hate... in the end though, I think it was a good move. more importantly I redid the eyes - he is now looking where he is reaching and his pupils arent a stretched out line going from the top eyelid to the bottom one

youwashock wrote:Good on you for working to wrap up an old project. Raptors look great. Awesome work from the kids, as well.

Cheers youwashock - the kids are pretty pleased with the kind words (as am I of course)

I've got a quick Nurgle Daemon prince update... with little to nothing done on the DP himself. This is because im not sure if I want to keep that much of the work Ive already done (as little as it is), or if i really want to strip all the gs off it and 'start again'.

although these tiny wings (from the chaos spawn sprue) are definitely going

A cork and a mysterious coathanger have entered the chat...

My wife asked me to put this coat hanger in the recycling, but when I checked it I saw (you guessed it) its's PolyStyrene! yeah baybee!

So coathanger went in the "I can do something with that" pile and I came up with this:

...the least impressive axe or scythe ever:

after some refinement

and after breaking it and having to do some minor repairs:

lots more to do, but I think its heading in the right direction

I used the cork on the base

I think I'm going to try and fake some dripping ooze from the pipe, and possibly do a glossy layer across the bottom (like the the rocks are jutting from a swamp or pool).

Catch you all soon!
Cheers

Post by: darkkt

ok, back for another update!

We have some progress in a few areas, lets start with... the Scythe.

Sigh.

The damn scythe was - is - a pain. I had no clear idea what I was going to do with it for ages - I glued bits on and then cut them off, I slapped down greenstuff and removed it afterwards... two or three times. Just directionless.
Anyway, I finally decied that I'd just hack into it and see what happened. I attacked the blade with a round file and was suprised that I was pretty happy with the result - and last night I laid down some greenstuff again and I dont hate it. I think its working....

Ive still got the other side and the handle to do, but I'm feeling this is probably the direction I want to go in, and that at least gives me some confidence.

I've also progressed the base a bit. I liked it but felt the mildly textured black bottom of the base itself was a bit dull, so I tried the 'wet PVA glue + Superglue' trick to get a super-quick gross-rippled texture going.

(Nurgling was briefly added for gaks and giggles)

I figure I paint the base completely, then figure out a way of adding the clear epoxy I've decided on and then see how it looks. hoping for a 'gross slime' effect. Of course if I stuff up the base with the epoxy glue I'll need to completely start it again, but fate favours the bold...

I've decided on the wings - although Ive done little work on them:

And I did some work on the chest 'armour', moving from this:

to this

FYI - the white bits of plastic are cut and shaped from a shampoo pump dispenser.

All mostly smooth and neat at the moment - I figure I lay down the basics and then nurgle it up. I find that if I go fully nurgle on the greenstuff from the outset then it can look a bit 'sloppy' or 'lazy' - like Im covering up errors rather than intentionally sculpting something.

So, let me know what you think!

Thanks Ragsta, I enjoyed the NMM process on the Tzeentch DP so much I decided I'll try it again on this one!

But firstly... I finished my Model of the Month Grave Guard banner bearer!

Pretty happy with this little fella - a bit like the horrors, I wanted to try another 'quick' scheme, a paint job that I figure could be slapped on without spending hours and hours per model, whilst still looking quality on the table top. Contrast paints were to the rescue again here. I didnt take photos of these steps, but:

1) Base coat with a light grey
2) Hit the main armour pieces with retributor gold.
(optional 2 - Drop a darker gold into the recesses and a brighter gold/silver on the highlights). I did this, but I’m not convinced this step is necessary.
3) Hit the trim and the outer skirt with black.
4) Highlight the highest black parts with mid tone grey and then pure white (I also did more steps in here, again, not convinced it is noticeable enough)
5) Paint over all the gold and all the black and the pale grey under-skirt with contrast blood angel red (undiluted as I don’t have any contrast medium)
6) Boom. Red stuff is done. Then hit the bones with a bone/cream and the other steel parts (blade & chainmail with ledbelcher).
7) And then its all over the whole model (red bits and all) with the athonian camoshade wash (it’s a lighter effect than the agrax and adds a mouldy green tinge to the bones).
8) Bone and steel highlights and boom you are done!
Surprisingly quick for a reasonable effect imo. I’d probably make the highlights in step 4 more prominent than I did, but I think it works

Darkkt's 2022 P&M Blog @ 2021/05/16 05:13:30

Post by: darkkt

uhhh... not sure where the rest of my post went, but it well here it is now!

The start of the banner was similar:

1) black base then progressive grey to white highlighting - you will note this not neat at all:

rough and ready.

2) then the contrast red

Then I did the moon (I used a round sticker as the template) in cream/bone and then did a super light drybrush in a glow around the moon. (I did a thin link of contrast paint carefully around the moon creating a 'halo'). I stenciled out the silhouette really roughly in light grey, corrected where necessary and then blacked the whole thing in and boom you are done!

Pretty confident I could belt out a bunch of these guys in no time at all. I dont actually plan to do any such thing of course - I'm still not allowed to buy new models XD

Back to the DP, Ive been continuing my progress (a little) - here is the other side of the scythe

And I hit the base with some washes and tried a rusty nmm on the pipe - let me know what you think!

1) base coat

2) camoshade wash again - heavy all over!

3) Then the rusty iron NMM pipe attempt started with a grey

4) then progressive and agressive stippling of brown, brown orange, orange, and a light spanking of a 'tan' colour i made out of camoshade and wraithbone - all tied together with an agrax earthshade wash

5) Then in spots where i decided there had been some rust worn off, I placed a stripe of dark grey, a highlight of brigher grey, and then just a touch of white:

only three steps of NMM here and nothing that was very hard to do - i figured its not worth really working the highlights on an ancient pipe in a swamp. If anything is going to be grimy & rusty, its going to be that!

I'm so pleased with how the PVA+Superglue texture on the base worked out - its far better than I hoped (and my expectations were pretty high already)! basecoating and adding the wash really bring it out.

Let me know what you think
Cheers
KT

Love a good simple contrast scheme for the grunts. It really is the advantage of the system - pumping out a decent 'opposition' to your main army, or 'chaff' for the list.

Thanks for sharing

Hi IGtR, thanks I'm actually of two minds about the glue epoxy now - it wasnt easy to manage and once its on you're pretty much stuck with it. I've decided to try a layer or two of ardcoat gloss varnish to give the base and the creatures a 'glossy wet look'. My thought are that it will either work perfectly and it will look excellent, or it will just look shiny - in which case I can just drop the epoxy over the top.

In any case, apart from adding the wetness I think the base is now finished, with the critters coloured like a nasty bruised looking flesh.

Pleased so far, so fingers crossed applying the ardcoat tonight works out
Cheers
KT

Bruised flesh looking suitably grim. Good luck with the 'Ardcoat!

Yowza, paint really pulled that base together! And props on that banner, great result that doesn't seem to have cost your sanity / hours upon hours of work.

That banner is really sweet. The work on the base is really turning out well. And I can't wait to see how you paint the scythe.

Cheers folks

Ok - last pics of the base as Im sure you're all sick of it - ardcoat applied:

Quite happy with how slick and slimy it looks now, feeling that I dont need to add more epoxy on top as its pretty much where I think it needs to be.

A little detail I added is the 'ripples' around the fat tentacle - hoping that this adds an impression of depth to the swamp although it might be too well hidden.

Anyway, back to the Daemon Prince, his scythe and some green stuff practice now.

I’m constantly impressed by your attention to detail darkkt! The swampy nurgley base is full of win, then you throw some great but simple nmm too. Great stuff!

The Skelleybob is fantastic too, a really atmospheric scheme that sounds relatively simple too. The freehand on the banner is spot on too

G'day all, sneaking in a quick update while at work as I wait for a software update to download

First up - after doing the base I was still in the painting mood and so I decided to paint up the head. Took a few attempts, but finally settled on an approach I think works:

I took a few photos of an earlier version - I dont hate it, but it isnt of the quality I want to put out on a challenge or competition piece.
First off some white dots over black:

Then a wash of red contrast.

Far too pink (I'd need to hit it with another burst of red contrast) but I decided to go down the yellow-to-red option above- do you think I made the right choice?

Otherwise things are moving slowly - the scythe continues to slowly progress

I hope to finish this soon so I can paint it.

and I've put the arms back on the model with some shoulder pads

I've wasted a lot of time (and a non-zero amount of greenstuff) on the wings, and struggling to get anything of quality out of them... If I can't pull off the insect wings (pun intended) soon, I'll switch to the metal bat wings that I took off the Tzeentch DP and replaced with feathered wings.
(the ones at the top here)

They are reasonably 'worn' and ratty looking to be a nurgle conversion, so I wont be horribly upset if this is where I end up

On a different note, I thought I'd do a quick post on my hobby set up. I do not have space for a full desk or room where I can put gorgeous painting racks, so I need something I can pick up and put away conveniently. Enter the SnapBox:

I bought two of these from Spotlight (Australian sewing and hobby store) and each came with 3 trays

I've started the process of magnetising one for my son, and I'll magnetise another for myself sooner or later

The rest holds bits

and paints

It's good enough for moving stuff around my house, and is modular so I can take some but not all of it with me (so I took 3 on holidays with me last year - paints in the top 2 rows and unpainted models on the bottom row). If I was taking it to a game store or comp I'd probably need to strap it with something - the clips on the side a good, but my faith only goes so far...

Anyway, software installation has finished and I need to reboot!
Cheers
KT

Nice work on the Nurgloid, the big eyes and head look really good. FWIW I think the colours you chose work well, the spots seem a bit twee for Nurgle.

The mobile hobby set up works well, I’m amazed you could take it on holiday with you. I’d be looking for a new Mrs gobert if I were to suggest such a thing!

Thanks Gobert My wife is very forgiving of my hobby, something I greatly appreciate

Super quick update today
1) I finally pulled the pin on the bug wings. If I had been able to dedicate more time and more greenstuff (or a cheaper alternative) to the project I think they would have looked great, but were simply not coming off as well as I hoped and were going to take waaay too much time and materials. So, metal bat wings it is:

I also started the true nurglification of the DP by gouging a hole in his breastplate and spilling out some guts:

converting is great, but Nurglification is the *really* fun part of this build expect more updates soon!

Ho... Ho.... Ho...ld up.
Its not a discount Santa.
It's not (as my daughter once called it) a Great Uncle.
It's... a nurgling!

what do you mean everyone knew it was a nurgling?

Very happy with how this guy is looking at the moment, its got a more 'current nurgling' shape to it than my previous dude who was (whilst I'm still happy with him) was far further away from the current 'pear-shaped' lads.

Quick step by step of the process:

1) Armature (a kid's bead and wire from a champagne bottle top)

2) Rough shapes

3) Refinement and details (teeth etc)

4) positioning (and a few more adjustments - including the bell ring-hold and the hand he's holding the horn with.

I think I'm nearly done on this guy to be honest. I've added a load of gross details to his back to fill in space:

and changed his boots for gross claw things

Only a few more details and I think he'll be ready for an undercoat... although the undercoat can reveal previously hidden flaws, so there may well be a new round of greenstuff after this too.

Can't wait to start getting paint on him! Havent figuredd out what colours he'll be, but I'm sure it will be fine

speaking of paint:

Cheers
KT

Damn, I shouldve sculpted a top hat and a monocle for him (scribbles down notes for 'monopoly-guy' themed nurgling base...) Oh yeah, the big guy will definitely have some green and brass/bronze, but I'm not sure how much just yet.

youwashock wrote:Man, you got greenstuff powers...

Thanks

I've undercoated everything now and the paint is indeed coming on. I started with the scythe, as it was ready to go. This is where I'm at:

I didnt take many step shots, but First some brown and then lots and lots of brown-orange & orange stippling to give it a dirty rusty look:

Then I hit it with a wash of agrax in an attempt to tie the colours together, followed up by attempts at Nmm scratching using greys and white

This was ok, but the agrax went too far, and I needed to bring back some brightness. I did a light drybrush of orange and then tidied up the scratches again:

I think the after shots are pretty much where I want this to be on the rust. I *might* add the faintest little touch of blue to the scratches... the simple grey is just not feeling really 'metal' to me yet.

Apart from that, I did a quick bone base coat for Belly here:

Looking forward to hitting this guy with some more paint - Im very pleased with how its going

Cheers
KT

MOAR COWBELL!

Hehe, I'm pretty happy with this little guy

He's not quite done yet, but you can see the sort of skin tones I'm trying for - a deeper purple base with elf flesh and then a turquoise contrast colour in the shadowed areas. I need to make it a little more refined, but he's heading in the right direction.

Apart from this I've started hitting the main DP with some base coats

Much like the nurgling and the guy's head, I've started with a base of Volupus Purple contrast, then I'll shift to highlighting with elf flesh + random other colours (yellows and browns etc).

Apart from my fleshy lads I've leaned into the scythe and *tried* to drop a 'bronze' effect on the decorative parts... I'm not 100% happy with them yet, but I reckon they are pretty close.... Sigh.

Added some age to the handle

I think it looks pretty good - let me know what you think

Otherwise I've been focusing

See, I think that too. I'm thinking I need to brighten the brown in it a touch... At this stage Im going to leave it, and work on the body. the shoulder pads are going to be bronze, so if I can get a suitably bright effect on these then I'll revisit the scythe.

Anyway - time for for the body to get 'fleshed out'.

Early days yet, but these WiP's are encouraging, so I'm happy with my choices so far .
It gives me a weird kinda attack on titan vibe... not intentional, but I'm not unhappy.

(quick selfie with my bestie)

AAAAHHHHHHHH
feels good to get this dude done Here's the full body shots

Front

Right

Back

Left

And some 'highlights'

to be honest there's a lot of stuff I might have done differently (the armour paintjob is too busy, the freehand on the bottom of the robes is not really noticeable from a distance and the scythe still coould have been brighter) but all that said I'm pretty Proud of the end result and Im very happy to put it down and move onto something esle!

What something? Going to try and get the June Model of the Month done so its a Sister of Battle. I've decided to move entirely away from the grim-dark chaos aesthetic and try for something more contemplative... ergo I've attempted to sculpt a bonsai looking tree with flowers on it.

No idea how its going to turn out, but I'm excited to try and get a nice clean effect in a short period of time

Anyway, let me know what you think!

Thanks

Update time - work progresses on the SoB. Enjoying my colour choice here
First off a basecoat of Fulgrim Pink

Then applied a heavily diluted mix of Volupus Pink Contrast (using Contrast medium)

its really acting as a shade here, just pooling in the shadows and deeps

Now I'm working on some quick highlights:

My attempted marble effect on the base using spray cans did NOT work, so I'm going to try and redo it tonight.

Meanwhile I have looked ahead at the IW discord contest for next month and apparently its going to be Tzeentch or Khorne. Decided to go old-skool and drop in some 2nd ed Tzeentch flamers!

I painted this one years and years ago:

However he and his friends are looking just a bit shinier now...

Planning on doing minimal changes to the actual structure of these guys, just looking at minor touches by adding small flamey-bits in greenstuff.

Of course Flamers of Tzeentch come in squads of 3, 6 or 9 - so time to build one more flamer - this ones going to be a Pyrocaster (so fractionally bigger and more-flamey-ier?....*shrug*)

Armature first:

Then put down a base - this can be 'unrefined' at this stage.

Mind you, this is pushing the definition of 'unrefined'

Lumpy the Pyrocaster: "Father, why have you created me? What is my purpose? Why can I feel pain?"

Cheers all and catch you next week

Finished: Adeptus Sororitas, Order of the Falling Blossom

This was a lot of fun to build and paint, let me know what you think (C&C welcome)

The sister was painted using (mostly) these:

both contrasts were well thinned with contrast medium, and obvs there was some white mixed in

The tree was painted white first, then I messily detailed all the inner cracks with a dirty mix of brown and grey left over from my daemon prince build, then a wash of watered down agrax earthshade. all the flowers were then picked out in white again.

I feel it ended up reasonably organic looking

I then went over the flowers with fulgrim pink, a dot of thinned volupus pink, and an edge highlight of pale pink (fulgrim pink + white).

The base was painted white and then i hand-painted the marble lines in. One of the 'tricks' here was that I would sometimes wet the base before or after painting, meaning that any undried paint would be diffused/blurred. I like the effect

fallen blossoms picked out as per tree.

Tree and base

A little compulsory freehand

This was pretty simple too - squiggly grey lines with tiny pink blotches. I quite like the effect

Funnily enough the hardest part of this was her face - I redid this so many times I was worried I was going to obscure her face details - I eventually just got it 'fine, I guess' and left it at that. I've seen she's got a bit of a 5 oclock shadow lol.

Maybe I need to dedicate some practice to faces? Not a terrible idea actually...

Anyway - Let me know what you think!
Cheers

Thanks KernelTerror, I am very happy with almost all the model (I shoulda spent a little longer on the face - might revisit it in the future maybe). I think a full squad would be pretty cool too - im planning on getting the new kill team box for my birthday, so I can see me possibly picking up a box of sisters to make a sisters KT Spec Op squad ... in a few years once Ive gotten through my current box of shame of course lol

Did I say I'd post tomorrow?... ahahahaha

Well work has been tough over the last few weeks and my painting has been limited, but I guess Im ready to post some new updates.

First, my first finished olds school Tzeentch flamer:

here's looking at you kid

So I'm happy with how its turned out - its not a masterpiece, but sometimes you gotta call it done. The hardest part was choosing a colour scheme i was happy with. For reference, this is how they looked *before* i stripped and repainted:

I think removing the bright red and yellow was a good call, and I'm quite happy with how they tie my few Tzeench models together. The Blue and Purple colours bridge the gap between the blue 1ksons and purple pink horrors,

and the aethermatic blue magic effect is a consistent element of all three:

So I've got for more metal models to get done - and most of these are in a based coated state so I think I can get them done by the end of the month.

What else...

I did a Storm Cast model of the month last month:

this was a quick fun job, and convinced me that I really need to practice painting white

I also did a some nurgle sculpting with the kids. I started this guy with Sculpy clay (the oven cooked stuff) then went over in greenstuff, milliput and a GS+milliput mix. I didnt really expect much of it to begin with (I was playing with the kids), but I'm chuffed with the end result if my kids ever finish theirs I will post those as well

A nearly finished stage:

First coat of Pink contrast paint (still wet):

And final product:

Cheers all
KT

*Looks around - its dusty as hell and all my pot plants are dead*

Hello?

*echoes* hello...ello...llo...o

Damn.

Hey all - been a while I've struggled to find time to post do updates - work has been super busy (still is really) and I havent found the time at lunch to popping back into dakka to update! However, whilst I've been too busy to post I have not been too busy to paint!

And so with that get ready for a big dump of finished pics!
*big dump? ...perhaps I could have used a more appealing turn of phrase there...*

1) Finished - Model of the Month:
ORK NOB!

Very happy with this lad, particuarly as it only took me 3 days to go from unbuilt to fully painted! Now a few of those days had some long assed painting sessions, but whatever - that's a pretty good turnaround for me

2) Finished - Squad of 2nd & 3rd edition Raptors

these will look familiar because they were *practically* finished a month or so ago, but they fell off the to do list. Still, here they are:

Apologies for the not great photos.

3) Finished - Metal Khorne Lord
After spending weeks on the Tzeentch flamers for the Iron Warriors discord painting July August challenge, I pumped this guy out in a few days and liked him so much that I submitted him instead!
I thought this guy's axe turned out well:

4) Finished - Death Guard
Put the final touches on my Daughter's Death Guard model (a model of the month) that she decided she didnt want to paint.

5) FINISHED - Chaos Spawn
Here is my most recent submission for the Iron Warriors Discord challenge - 2 chaos spawn. These two guys were both painted using in 1) the same limited pallet and 2) the same 'mother colour' (Mephistion Red). What is mother colour?
This:

Pumped them out quick, but still very happy with the result. I think They work together and still look like a 'unit' despite the very different complexions.

6) FINISHED KILL TEAM ORK TERRAIN

As I think I might have threatened, I picked up the Octarius box and have been working through the terrain: which is all now finished:

6) WIP - Octarius NOB

this guy is almost finished now, just working on the NMM parts (which are currently kind of blue):

anyway thats all I've managed to get done since the last post - I'll really try to get on more to post more stuff, as work settles down (fingers crossed).

Cheers all

Cheers lads, as always I appreciate the kind words!

New week means grabbing a few minutes at work when the boss isnt looking and dropping a new post! First off - I finished my Octarius Ork Nob and belted out the bomb Squig:

Very happy with the NMM on this ork, even though it should probably be less shiney. You can also (kinda) see the different approaches I used to the NMM on the power claw compared to the gun - just trying new things really. Let me know which one you prefer!

Anyway, after finishing these two, the latest #ChaosDiscordComp https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/chaosdiscordcomp/ came out for October - This month its SPOOKY!
Spooky was a tough call, so I thought "what about doing a couple of skellingtons I have laying around/"
THEN I thought "Why not do all the skellingtons I have, including those I had attempted to make into a BloodBowl army about 10 years ago and those I had glued to tanks etc as decoration?"
AND THEN I thought "Why not a graveyard diorama?"

And so...

the boys are back in town

Lads that were previously statues:

Dancing sword boys

These guys are all looking at the same thing

Raise Shields!

Come on you sleepy-heads, rise and shine! I didnt have enough legs, so one had to 'make do'...

spikey bois

"I'm Putting the Band Back Together" hits different when the band is all dead tbh

And last up - the ORB and the Necromancer!

I'm thinking of going 'OSL-Heavy on this diorama', and I figure a bigass glowy ORB should result in a nice unhealthy glow.

What is the origin of the ORB? Who can say what the ORB really is? Leave your guesses in the comments!

The Necromance however has changed a little from this pic however - he was originally a metal ghoul that I had cut the forehead from to add a third eye about 10 years agao. I took the eye out as it looked lame, so I replaced it with an even lamer horn.

I needed to reposition his arm:

Add some decorations

Greenstuff

Boom - flambeaux!

But... still. The Horny Necromancer was not doing it for me, so time to clip and change.
Chromedome time - and some reading lights

More candles? More candles.

DId I mention I put magnets on them

And this is the current state of the board:

Anyway, that's the progress so far, I'll do more work tonight and update again soon!
Cheers
KT

Loving the bomb squig and it looks like the nob stole some cabling from your Iron Warriors! . I think the claw NMM looks better for Orks imho.

The diorama looks amazing already, the candles on the necromancers back are inspired, will he have a pulpit in front of him with a big book on it? All the candles on the walls will give you plenty of chance to practice OSL on that’s for sure! Good luck smashing it out for Halloween

Cheers man I think I agree - the claw NMM is rougher and looks like 'rough worked steel' with a little rust worked in. The poles and the gun are almost a clean, stainless steel look. Anyway, we can see what the next Ork brings!

Big book? No, but that would have been a cool idea to include. The Necromancer Ghoul will be standing like this:

with the orb in his hand glowing the same colour (likely Blue) as the orb on the ground. the plan is for the ground orb to be bright and cast light on MOST of the scene, while the hand orb will hit those on the top. The candles adn the flambeaux will be casing a contrasting (and much dimmer) orange glow from the back and the sides.

...at least thats the plan I have in my head.

My thought is that a few closer to the back will be in very dim light indeed, and have very little in the way of osl (and correspondingly low visibility)

I could find out that this idea doesnt work at all, in which case I may pull up the ORB and just paint the scene as if its daylight

for the curious,
the ORB - was originally a roll-ball from an underarm deoderant bottle took a while for the perfume smell to go away, but its all good now

The blue box they are standing on is an old children's watercolour paint box from a 2 dollar shop. The paints were seriously terrible, but the box was a good size and shape
Candles are the old trick of lollypop sticks and thin blue tubes from a waterballoon kit, the wire wicks are garden ties with the plastic stripped off.
I hope to undercoat tonight and get a start on the base colours
Cheers!

Looking good, the OSL certainly sounds ambitious. I can see why you’ve marked up all the spots so you can figure out where the light will come from. Are they magnetised to keep their orientation right too?

no, not really. the magnetisation keeps them in place (and stops me from losing them!), but I need to manage the orientation myself.

Quick update time

I finally started getting some paint down - I need to finish this by the end of the month, so Ive gotta get moving!

Step one:
Undercoat

Doing OSL, it just makes sense to start with Black.

Step two:
Base coat

A lick or two of necron abyss (an old paint - no idea what its called now)

Step three:
work on the light source

Step 4
and make it glowy

Step 5
Check what it looks like on a skeleton - this is my check to see if Im wasting my time here!

Pretty happy with the current progress, reckon I will start on the candle glow soon (for that classic Blue/Orange effect )
Cheers

Thanks all!

very busy at work still, but I'm trying to keep things moving on the diorama. Decided it was time to hit the Ghoul/Necromancer with their orb glow. This will inform the blue colour at the back of the piece.

The back area is only about two highlight layers in, so looks very a bit flat at the moment. I'll hit it with some lighter blues and whites shortly to bring it up to the same as the front skeletons. Looking at it I might also need to darken it in a few patches too... not a big deal though.

I've focused the glow on half of the board as the other half will be lit by the flambeaux. Hopefully.

Cheers

Didnt have a lot of time to do work over the weekend, but I *did* get time to dive into the flames on my Necromancer. I think they need to be pushed just a little brighter than they currently are, but I do like the contrast Im getting on this guy:

No, I think you are right, it absolutely needs to be brighter than it is right now. It's easy to be too conservative and make things dark when adding a contrasting colour - I just need to step it up a notch.

Quickly running out of time though, this has to be done by Sunday night, wihch leaves me 5 nights to get stuff done. Eep!
*insert sweating gif here*

Latest pics coming up. These ALL need to be brightened, at this point I was just blocking in the main colours. I also need to get some 'magenta' blends into these spots to show overlapping areas. These will be pretty discrete I reckon - I dont want too much of a third colour showing up and making things murky.

Lots and lots of work yet to do... hope I get enough time to do it!
Cheers

Hi All!

Spooky Diorama is done!

Apologies in advance, but this is basically going to be just a big photo dump as I'm very proud of how this turned out, and it was a challenge to get all the various details into just a few shots.

Anyway:

The big guy

Crawling out of the grave and gettting toasty

I'm pretty happy with that sheild tbh

Candles, more candles (very happy with how they turned out too)

With the amount of fire needed to get this level of glow, those candles must last about 3 sseconds each

someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this. my family is dying

The mosh pit around the disco ball
Disco's had mosh pits right?

The better seats are closer to the band

And some arial views:

Cheers all!

Cheers Youwashock - im pretty happy with how they turned out

But, its time to move on to Novemeber's new challenge which is...
...
...
...osl.

haha, no, its ok good chance to practices some more.

Anyway - time to revisit and old model that I am NOT going to convert. At all. Because the sculpt is just too good.

Yeah baby. He's coming back!

THis guy had a previous painted existence dating back to 2009 and was one of the earliest photos I ever posted here!

Unfortunately this lad was not able to survive a 1 metre drop onto a hardwood floor (this is why DP's with wings are better lol) and he has been sitting like this in the warp waiting for a chance to return to realspace.

A little acetone and he's both stripped of paint and gently moisturised (according to the bottle of acetone I used) and ready to rock and roll

I originally planned to put some wings on him, but every pose I tried just looked worse than the DP itself. Its a classic, seems reasonably popular and it'd be tough to get another one for a reasonable price in Australia.

So no conversion on the min.

But the BASE tho...

You can see from the earlier pic that I've mounted it high on a decorative base that I'm making at home. This base is a lasagna of garbage and trash i.e. the following:
1) The lid from an empdy drain cleaner tub (its quite thick plastic), trimmed and sanded down
2) a thin *real* 60mm base superglued on top (superglued so it can be 'cracked off' reasonably easily if I *REALLY* want to play a game with it in the future).
3) a rough disc of HIPS polystyrene plastic (cut from the lid of the crappy watercolour paint dish - I used the blue base in my last diorama)
4) 'shards' - i.e. offcut bits - of HIPS left over from other builds (the aforementioned lid and crystal CD cases)
5) otehr scraps of polystrene - mostly sprue, a bit of leftover coathanger (from the nurgle DP) and a busted dental floss holder
6) I then covered most of this in aluminium foil (from yogurt lids)
7) the 'cables' are left over bicycle brake cable
8) a mostly complete layer of Milliput (this is obviously not trash of course)
9) and back to garbage - bits of garden bark I stole from the front yard of a house I walk past every day. not quite finished with this bit yet.

Current state:

So, do we have any guesses at this stage about how I'm planning the OSL?

(on a little kill team update - progress is hindered by these challenges, but does continue. current wip gretchen dude:

Cheers all!
KT

A quick base update:

I finished the bark, added the spikes and now its time for the flames!

And I took some time to get a photo of the DP with some bright light from the bottom - hopefully giving some guidance on where the light is going to hit

Cheers Gobert, I'm pretty happy with how the skele's turned out.

Time for another super quick update and I like to start today's post with the BASE:

so the flames have grown since my last post

This was a multi-stage process, but very comfortable with the result
then undercoat

Then yellow

and finally the one I posted at the top with reds and oranges blended in

as for the DP himself:

Base coats

Nuln oil and volupous pink as a wash

added an old blue wash

and then I started mapping out the OSL

Might look a little odd at this stage, but
This is the angle that he light will be coming from, so I think It makes sense...

Cheers all!

Thanks guys, the osl practice has been a lot of fun

But...
We interrupt this ChaosDiscordComp with a word from our Model of the Month.

SQUIG

We now return you to your normal Daemon Prince over a Roaring Fire programming

Progress?
Some.
The big lad is now attached to his base

It lines up... reasonably well. I dont think its perfect, but its a bit too late to change things now. Oh well. Still pretty happy

To be honest, I think it looks far better from a different angle:

The NMM turned out more yellow and grey than gold and iron, but I'm still pretty happy with my results so far. I will do some more touch ups, but nothing too significant.

That big wrinkly gun arm was hard work to get anywhere near NMM... lots more pracitice required!

Quick close up of the sword from both sides

And the backpack/skin

so I think Im at the finishing touches right now. I'm leaving it alone for a few nights, getting a little distance so I can come back to it later in the week - maybe even next week - with a fresh set of eyes.

Time to go back to my Ork Kill Team for a little while

cheers

Thanks lads - I am *super* happy with how this bad boy turned out. Feels good to do a paint job that you feel does justice to the sculpt itself.

The skin-metal also turned out better than I expected, and better than my prior efforts, which was nice . Part of this is me improving (which is good cos I'm doing a fair bit of practice!) but I also think that the fact I didnt use true metallic paint here helped a lot. Blending tan & purpley coloured paint into TMM steel and silver is a reall challenge. Another reason to keep practicing my NMM!

And now - its time for a new challenge - or should I say - challenges. That's right, plural baybee.
hahah that is super misleading tbh - what's happening is that Im doing my monthly discord challenge AND im going to use the same models to submit to this month's DakkaDakka challenge (https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/802271.page)!

I only discovered the dakkadakka challenge the other month, and this is the first one that aligns with my discord challenge so its the perfect opportunity.

The theme for the challenges this month is "Open". No restrictions, go wild.

My Brain: - This is a great opportunity to knock off some models that have been lurking around for a decade! December is busy with work and family, its time to take the foot off the painting pedal and ease into the end of the year. Nothing too hard, no conversions, no OSL, no NMM, right. ...right?

Also My Brain: hahahaha greenstuff go brrrr

That's right, its "Biting off More than you can Chew" time once again - I'm doing an 11 person Traitor Marine Kill Team Squad.

First up - Icon Bearer

this guy is actually a mid-biold Master of Possesion (MOP) but the big assed icon means he will sit in this role nicely.

This guy started as an exercise designed to see if I could make a weird pointed pyramid head with teeth that a guy described on the discord.

I threw one together quickly, really liked it and then decided to make the whole MoP model.

Starting with a Dark Angel Veteran body I did some upscaling and am currently here:

It's not a MoP without a little hand flame, so he's got that too:

As an Icon bearer, this will be ignored.

Cant be an icon bearer without an icon tho Time for some sprue scraps and greenstuff

And I carved up a Dark Angels backpack for this:

Oh. Icon bearers need a sword I think...

I'm making a smoking censor too:

Final steps are to do his feet, legs and extend the robes a bit.

Next up is the Aspiring Champion. Not much done yet, but because I was raiding the bits box I grabbed this as its base body:

very little chopping and changing gets us this

and a start on the head:

The final space marine is... not started yet.
But will be a heavy bolter dude

These three will be my entry into the Dakka Dakka challenge - which is limited to 5 models max.

For the discord I have also committed to 8 cultists, which are based on these craptachans:

You can the work i started a decade ago as I was building a traitor guard force... sigh, i musta really drank a lot... anyway, they will heavily changed cos I despise the craptachan sculpts. I'm thinking of basing them around Mai Varnus (or at least how he ended up) in the Word Bearer's book Dark Apostle.

oh, lunch break is over, I better get back to work lol
cheers all
KT

Cheers folks I think pyramid head’s head might be a fraction too wide, but I’m otherwise comfortable with it so imma leave it for now.

The icon needed to have most Of the spikes replaced as I made them too thin, glad I did, looks far more striking with chunky spikes

Quick update-
Storm cast conversion progresses:

And I’ve gotten a little further on the icon bearer:

Want to start on the cultists soon - I’m thinking two stubbers and 6 auto pistols + brutal weapon. Mostly because converting the brutal weapons should be fun

I’m planning on disguising the ugly heads by modeling them on the Varnus character from Anthony Reynold’s book Dark apostle.

Fantastic green stuff work, that Icon bearer's teeth helmet is impressive!

I always enjoyed the older Daemon prince sculpt, the armor and battered wargear always sold the "he was once a man/marine" a little better than the newer model.

I like the work you're doing on the cultist, most players just grab a few boxes of the repeat sculpt cultist, a kit that has diminishing returns when more than 10 are on the field at once. Any plans to expand the cultist group out more once you're through with this lot?

Cheers mate - the old sculpt really nails the chaos space marine aesthetic that first attracted me to the traitors in the first place.
More cultists? Well I dont have immediate plans - but I do have 12 more catachans sitting around.
...and 20 cadians. I guess my Ultimate plans are to expand these guys into make a Traitor guard kill team - and a traitor Veterant guardsman team. After that, I'll round out to have a couple of full squads.

So - time for a few progress shots. Its been busy at work, so progress has been a little slow...

1) aspiring champ
quite happy with this pose, feels intimidating

side view

This guy has very few major bits left to do - mainly gap filling and coming up with some details. after that its done!

2) built the Heavy Bolter dude
I wanted this fellow to be tall so it uses old terminator legs and I've bulked out the middle a bit too.

the helmet is coming along

I dropped some Old Ogre bits on this guy too - can you pick where they are?

Cultists have been slow too. I've built the body for one of my stubber guys

and I started posing another dude

drama queen

let me know what you think! I need to get a wriggle on, ive still got more models to build and convert and I've only got until the end of december!
Cheers

Sculpting is looking pretty good. I like the rhino horn, though I think the ogre vambraces on his legs make the arms look a little disproportionate--though very metal! And also very amused by the final guy's pose, reminds me of that scene from Platoon...

Ugh, hard to keep up with posting to Dakka at the moment (work has been busy sliding into the end of the year) but progress on the Traitor Astartes Kill Team has occured!

1) Icon Bearer (Master of Possession):

2) Heavy Bolter Dude:

3) Aspiring champ w power weapon

4) Two undercoated cultists:

5) Another heavy Stubber dude and friend

6)putting the brutal into brutal weapons

(Vejut - this is what the Platoon looking guy ended up with)

7) and the last two guys are off the chain

Undercoating a bunch more dudes shortly meaning i can finally start painting soon!

Cheers all

Very inspiring sculpting darkkt. Chaos is the sculptor's army, it's free license to create anything you want with the models. Particularly like the icon and the small chain holding the icon-bearers sword - little details like that really bring the model to life.

Nice stripes kt! Tonaly (is that a word?!) the yellow and white seem close to the skin colour, maybe they could do with a border to break them up a little?

Love the chaos star on his head too! The grim flesh colour brings it out nicely

hello everybody!

havent been postin much - Ive been hanging out for a light box that took a while to get delivered. Now its here.... well the photos are a little better I guess?, I think i also need to just upgrade my phone (its a 7s lol). or perhaps I need to actually learn how to take photos.

Anyway - get your eyeballs ready for a pic dump of my completed Kill team squad!

Getting these guys finished is a great relief - they were loads of fun, but I prefer to work on smaller squads to keep things interesting.

Some single shots and close ups (not taken in light box FYI):
Icon Bearer

The lad that satrted it all. that helmet really grew on me, the smoke turned out ok and and I'm chuffed with how the icon looks too Might have a go a sculpting a few more icons tbh

Aspiring Champ

Again, the face really worked out well (and was pretty simple too) and the shoulder pad - whilst NOT exactly symetrical - still looks ok. actually quite proud of the backpack which manages to use the chaos demon heads you are supposed to stick to predator guns. (point of interest - I also used these gun heads for the feet on the icon bearer!)

And the Heavy bolter guy

originally I was worried that the hood looked too much like a psychic hood - but I think it does what I was hoping - bulks him out a little and artificially adds height
His chains and hooks fulfil a similar purpose and this guy (who started looking a little skinny) worked out in the end

Now the cultists
This guy was my test case:

and he worked out well enough for me to keep going with the others

(big fan of this guy's morning star)

the dark like betweeen his shrit and the armour is a bit overdone - although I dindt notice it until just then. Oh well.

Lookint at the close ups:

Faces = the demon muzzles and head stars ccould have been a little more consistent, but overall were ok

Very happy with the sheets of torn flesh - this skin colour worked out.

And of course - baby got back... sometimes.

My kids were grossed out by my flayed minons of darkness, so I count that as mission accomplished!

let me know what you think!

Cheers
KT

Thanks, glad you like him the Heavy Bolter dude was the only one I didnt build to a mental plan - I just made him up as I went - and I think he turned out better than expected

ShadowsAndDust wrote:I like the guy that has a face for a butt flap.

Cheers Although technically there are TWO guys with face-butt flaps. Flayed back guy wiht Chopper, and the Pale Skinned heavy bolter guy.

Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll wrote:That's a lot of caring detail for cultists, and it pays off. The backs... ugh *shivers*

Ah yes, this reaction pleases me.. I've got loads of catachan and cadian models (and bits of models) just hanging around, from an old Lost and the Damned/Traitor guard army i decided to build back in 2005/6. Happy to give some of them a use

I'm now thinking of making some actual Traitor Guard (Astra Millitarum) Kill Teams - so Traitor (Imperial) Guard Veteran guardsmen, Traitor Guard Guardsman and Traitor Guard Tempestus Scions. Lots of opportunitites to convert in all that

gobert wrote:You’re really putting the grim in to grimdark with these guys! Excellent work, and thanks to ShadowsAndDust for pointing out bumfaceflap guy

And Thanks Gobert - cultist artwork is always super grim, and I wanted these guys to really represent that. The stars on the head and the masks were from Anthony Reynold's Dark Apostle Book and the backs were really dont to cover up some gouges I left in the skin when I cut off the catachan bandoliers.

Anyway, its a few days before the discord announces another challenge, so I've headed back to some models I've kinda left in limbo - namely the PoxWalkers conversions! most My WFB Zombies to Poxwalker conversions are still getting greenstuffed, but I had 4 which were ready for (and have now received) some undercoat.

Note my (pretty ordinary) attempt at a little zenithal undercoating here - its tough to do with rattlecan tbh.

Big Mouth:

GunAxe Guy

robo-arm guy

And Swellington

A lot of this conversion work is to cover up flaws - because they were originally built as part of the lost of the damned army, they were amalgamated bits of zombie, catachan and miscellaneous - which meant they looked bloody awful. Cutting them up and regluing them as actual Zombies left patches of gouged and ruined areas. so Greenstuffing to cover it up was ncessary. However, i did have a few images in mind - obvs the actual pox walkers (which are kinda fat with tentacles) - and also the exploding zombies from Dead Island.

add in some chaos/nurgly feeling mouths and stuff and I think we have a reasonable poxwalker subsitute!
let me know what you think
KT

Cheers mate they have some paint on them now - deliberately sloppy basecoating so I havent taken any pics recently. Its deliberately slopppy because I want to add a bit of a blotchy/mottled appearance once the paint job is actually done.
I should probably take pics anyway... sigh.

However, new Discord Challenge for the IW page and its Chaos Corruption - so converting models to chaos
This time Im planning on a Traitor Guard Kill Team - starting with a 5 model corrupted Tempestus Scion squad.

Playing with some ideas, and came up with this skull + hands helmet idea (used BlueStuff to cast skulls and hands - these are not sculpted). Let me know what you think

Another quick update post - WIP WIP WIP - just of my Corrupted Tempestor with plasma pistol and Power fist - trying the weird Iron recipie again on this armour. Not sure ive if stepped it out before:
- base coat of ledbelcher/cygor brown contrast mix (50/50)
- cover with agrax (so it looks dark and dull)
- highlight of ledbelcher/tallasar blue contrast mix (50/50)

This photo is a little dark to see this tbh

this photo is not great but you can see the 2 different layers on the back shoulder

not on these models yet but there will be two more highlights with :
- silver/tallasar blue mix
- silver

You can kinda see it better on the CSM models I did last month

The aim is to quickly fake that sky/earth reflections you get on metal? Maybe?

Does it work? I think it does (at least I dont think it looks bad!), but interested in opinions

I like the look. Worn, but the eye likes to see that little splash of color. In the pictures the silver/blue mix looks very similar to Grey Knights Steel. Have you tried just using that? Could save you the mixing step.

Gotta say I havent really looked for a blue metal before - if I start doing this a lot (or on a vehicle) i will certainly do that - looks almost identical!

Time for another quick update - this time with my regimental standard progress.

Still needs some stripes, and some neatening up, but otherwise its not too bad. I think I shouldve made the thumbs a bit bigger... or the hands smaller. The scale is kinda like an adult holding a child-skull. Still, pretty happy overall

Let me know what you think!
Cheers

youwashock wrote:Rad. The blind socket on the Tempestor is very cool. The banner is awesome.

thanks mate. The blind socket is actually a result of a scalpel accident. I slipped when I was cutting something and managed to gouge a cut in the model's face which almost but not entirely saved my thumb. After washing the blood off I could see I needed to either re-cast the head or work with what I had.

It was very much a bob ross "happy little accident", only a bit gorier than usual

theCrowe wrote:Very sharp banner work! Love it. You just don’t see much by way of strong banner game in 40k these days. Way to keep the scene alive.

thanks mate - big assed banners are my cheaty way of practicing my freehand on something larger than a space marine shoulder-pad

And thanks as always Gobert after the last batch of converted iron warriors I did for Kill Team I really liked how the red looked in the overall scheme. I feel I should say was also happy wth the 8 cultists and their orange pants but the orange was a choice I made to make them look like freed inmates from a prison world. And tbh the orange just didnt pop as well as the red.

The lettering was me searching "heavy metal albulm fonts' and looking for one that was cool, simple, but also legible (a surprisingly small category).

In any case - they are all done (and have been for almost two weeks now! eep!): here's the final pics

Front

Side

Back:

Other side:

some individual pics

Plasma gunner

Hot shot las gun dude

Coms

Boss

Banner-man/hotshot volley gun guy

it was great to get them done
Cant play with them yet as I need to either make another 5 scions, or add in 7 normal guardsmen. I may end up doing both tbh

Anyway, onto the next project and its both simple and quick - infantry! the challenge is any chaos model with the keyword infantry (and there are loads). Instead of 'slaying the grey' Ive decided to lift some heavy weights
0==0
by finally doing the metal havocs that have been sitting around.

8 lads:

and this guy is my first one off the rank

More of this in a later post! Have a great weekend folks
Cheers all!

That land raider absolutely stunning and 100% METAL! The stripes are off the hook and the burning city scape is just nuts, real T2 flavours. The earlier post with the defiler was full of win too, it was good of him to paint hazard stripes on his claws . The ghostly boos and Poxwalkers look cool too, the grave stones are a good addition

Wow. That's just amazing freehand, the contrast between the hazard striped/muraled sides and the silver top and front is great too. What an amazing centerpiece.

Hi all, thanks to everyone for the very kind comments, I was really happy with how the freehand came out. Ive been nervous about trying a 'big' piece, so Im very pleased that people seem to like it!

And now for something completely different.

TRAITOR OGRYN CONVERSION

So- waay back in 2009? 2010? I decided to get some WFB Ogres (cheap on Ebay) and convert them to traitor ogryn. I forget why I did this.. I think they were cheap on ebay? Anyway, I didnt do a good job:

(as you can see Id already started to canniblise it for bits lol).

Anyway, come 2022 and Kill Team MOROCH comes out with the blackstone fortress Ogryn and I decided it was time to revisit at least one of these guys and see if I could pump out a better version a little quicker.

First up - start with the weapons. I wanted it to be very like the blacktone fortress ogryn, so I tried to replicate the main parts of its appearance. this involved a Nid scything talon and a piece of angle material from the cities of death terrain (plus bits)

body needed some greenstuff:

Then I added some milliput and made a spiked shoulder trophy rack (this is a steel staple from a large cardboard box bent to shape with some thick gardening wire).

then it was an undercoat to see how it looked:

And then finally paint!

Let me know what you think of the end result!

Next project for the IW discord challenge is some more heavy metal - 10 Metal Chaos Terminators from 1995/96

Cheers
KT

G'day G'day - Ive finally found a few minutes to post some updates!
its been a whole month since I posted! I *did* get this month's iron warriors discord challenge done - I did 10 old school chaos terminators (from 1995/96) and a custom banner

Enjoyed finally putting some paint on these lads a lot, although I really started to get sick of hazards... sigh, batch painting is NOT for me

I did do some freehand on the shoulderpads

I also had a lot of fun making the banner:

Im also working on a new project at the moment - - can you guess what it is?

Wow great job, those old termies look phenominal. They hold up really well, especially the shoulders and power fists. And I'm totally not jealous of the banner. I have a really tough time coming up with ideas for banners.

Hi all, thanks for the kind words

Apologies for the massive picture dump here, I was very pleased with the banner and it got me excited to sculpt again. So, i got to work making three big warty balls...

Here is my scratch built Feculent Gnarlmaw!

its started life as a deoderant lid, aluminium foil, and three old deoderant balls:

The balls needed some enwartening

then some wrinkles (and the addition of a firm ballring

After this I needed to start attaching them:

I added the ball horns here too, your balls can never be too horny

THORNS. I meant so say THORNS. THORNY BALLS.

ahem

then you need your wavy tree arms (branches as they are called by professional treeologists)

Things were going great, and then I looked the pic of the GW feculent gnarlmaw - I needed bells!
Too easy:

and what does a bell need? A bell needs a nurgling - I named her Smiley Virus, for reasons I hope are obvious:

This chap is unnamed - feel free to suggest one though

As well as this little peekaboo chap:

I added the mouth and thought I would drop in a tongue:

I think this worked out pretty well tbh

and after some more bits and bobs, we end up here, ready for me to put on some paint!

Top view

Right side

Back

Left:

Finally, I *have* put on the base coat and done a few details. Loads more painting to go, but its getting there

Hope you like it!
Cheers
KT

*snort* papa nurgle does love a triumvirate of large (t)horny-warty balls! He would be most proud of this particular set. Excellent sculpting and punnery, capped off by Smiley Virus . The best I can come up with for the un-named chap is Ding Dong, or Dinger Bell? A bit tame perhaps?

A close up of the freehand:

Here is the 'original'

and the stages of the rescue are below:

Cheers folks, the Red Gobbo was a lot of fun to sculpt and paint - and only took me a couple of weeks (the larger scale didnt hurt tbh).

Today, im sharing a Model of the Month I did in... november 2022? I think? And its technically two models I guess - these are both from cursed city, and they were both knocked out in a single day (the FLGS had a 1 day painting challenge going).

Im not sure if you can see it here, but I attempted to 'sculpt' (i.e. cast in blue stuff) the blue tile & skull patterns on some of the cursed city boards. I'll see if I can get another pic to show it better

the other one was an objective token - pointing skellington

these were a lot of fun to paint - I was going for a night-time bright moon-lit view colouring, so no OSL to speak of but a definite dark blue tinge to everything.

Cheers

Not sure what happened there... posting problems...

Anyway - Time for a new update and today it is time for

TYPHUS

I went with very muted browns nd greens on Typhus, and soft pastel pinks and blues on this base, and I think it looks pretty good

Of course, the power scythe needed to grab a little attention...

This was part of a basing challenge in November and because I was on leave, i didnt have a lot of time left to get anything done. This old skool typhus insisted it was his turn to be out of the pile of shame, and I cobbled together the base and the banner in just a few days.

These little heads here fun to do
weird bug face

happy nurgle demon

tri-horn skull

Happy with how this turned out, let me know what you think

Thanks Roknar - gotta say you are continuing to nail it over on your blog, those conversions are characterful af and really bring a sense of life and motion to the models. And steal away my friend, Im sure I stole it from somewhere else anyway

Another quick update - a quick warning as this one was is a little outside my norm"
- its not 40k (cue shocked gasps) and
- its not even games workshop (cue thuds as members of the notional audience faint)

This model is a 75mm 3d printed Elf Ranger from Dragon Trappers Lodge (https://direct.me/dragontrapperslodge) or https://www.instagram.com/dragon_trappers_lodge/?hl=en on instagram.

It was a really fun to do something a bit different, and im looking forward to the other model I grabbed - a similarly sized Shark Warrior from Archvillain Games.

Cheers folks

Well, its NEW YEAR NEW ARMY time!

...well its late Jan, so not really the New Year anymore I guess...
...and the army Im working on is more than 12 years old - im just restarting it...

so...
Its CURRENT YEAR OLD ARMY TIME!

I had a look at my pile of shame recently and noticed I had 60 or so unpainted Imperial Guard, about 5 Ogres, 3 or 5 imp guard tanks - all that I was going to convert to Traitor Guard back in ah... 2009!
This is what the 'finsihed' ones looked like:

not very impressive tbh, so time for a greenstuff glam-up

So in 2023 the Traitor Guard are going to be revisited and revamped. It will be slow work, but heres a bit of what Ive done so far:

First off ive created a Psyker HQ using a 1998 Ghoul:

im quite pleased with how this spine worked out:

Ive worked on a few standard troopers:

in my old attempt at traitor guard, I did a crap job of 'casting' greenstuff skulls. Im better at this now and can generally get good results - but for this army I want my skull decorations to be sculpted - like on these shoulderpads:

Im also playing with giving a few of them different guns - like shotguns:

im not sure about that guy's hood to be honest, I think I'll revisit it.

I am happy with how my 'tiny arrows' have been turning out:

and on this sentinel

speaking of the sentinel:

still got lots of work to do on the legs:

Ugh, when did sentinels get such large bases???

I'll try to keep dakka dakka updated with my progress, im aiming to get at least one update a week.

Cheers
KT

How are you doing the spiky bits?
The sentinel quarter circle especially. That seems to be done in one go?? Every attempt in doing a similar design has ended in abject failure for me, never mind doing it in a single pass.

And how are you getting the smalll spikes? Those seem done on fresh greenstuff. That does not work for me at all.Just pulls everywhere and ruins the shape. And you somehow did this with the wrist/forarm in the way no less Oo

Also, kudos on the spine...want to try that at some point too but it scares the bajeesus out of me lol

Hi Roknar - I rarely use pure greenstuff, because of the 'pull' effect you get when trying to use it 'fresh'. Its difficult to get super-fine results at the best of times, and the stickiness and rubberiness of greenstuff adds extra hurdles.
Instead I use a mix of greenstuff and (currently) Apoxie Sculpt. Apoxie doesnt bind as much and makes the putty act more like clay. Increasing the proportion of greenstuff makes it stickier (which is useful itself in some situations. Heads up - ot does make the resulting putty harder, but more brittle. If you dont have access to apoxie, I would recommend yellow milliput instead.

By making it more like clay you can 'cut and drag' bits of unwanted putty away from the bit you are trying to sculpt with far more sharpness on the edges than pure sticky greenstuff allows.
I also created my own tool for getting into the sharp 'cuts' into the arrow or spike heads - basically a tiny tube or straw cut to a sharp point. the straw cuts into the putty but (generally) doesnt squash or otherwise deform the result.

The spine wasnt as hard as I thought it would be to be honest - I might have to see if I can make a tutorial of how I did it... Although realistically I stole most of it from modernsynthesis's youtube channel.

Guardling wrote:Nice work on the traitors, look forward to seeing them with some paint...

Thanks Boss and Guardling Im thinking of some good colours at the moment - Im thinking a drab tan and brownish red as the base elements, and then some dark metallics...

Ok, another quick update with the (I think) Finished Sentinel Conversion:

Woah didn't realise that is what you were doing with the sentinel, that's cool!
Although it does look a lot like it's falling backwards...needs some vertical details to make it deliberate, maybe angle the smoke stacks forward?

a tiny start on a regular guardsman by adding the spiky banner poles
