Just been caught out on eBay!
Saw a Space Marine Whirlwind on there going for a paltry amount, brand new on sprues.
I thought to myself, "it seems a bit low in price, lets see if I win".
Next thing I was outbid, so then I upped my bid. Next to no time I was the proud owner of said item and, being honest, I didn't really need it!
What's your most impulsive buy?

I bought the WFB Anniversary High Elves box set (the one that came with like 20 Phoenix Guard, 20 White Lions, Dragon Noble, and a bunch of other crap) right before they stopped selling those things.
One of the few times a GW employee has been able to coax me to spend a stupid amount of cash in a GW store all at once.

I bought a 2000 point Tau army when the original codex was released. I also bought a 2500 point tyranid army when the 3rd edition codex came out (because of the new warrior models!) Both were sold quickly afterwards. I still buy complete armies but not on impulse any more.

Everything I buy from their store is impulsive because the better half of my brain and my better half tell me how silly it is to spend $35-$60 on a piece of plastic.
The most impulsive though had to be when I started a DA army with $200 of my $300 pay check in college. If it weren't for Ramen noodels, I would have starved.

Two so far:
1. I was putting together a small Forge World order - a few Chimera turrets and conversion kits and then thought... why not buy a Macharius? It had just come out, so I did.
2. I was in a bad mood, so I went to GW and bought a 3000 point Death Guard army.

Probably my most impulsive buy was an eBay Witch Hunters force: 60+ Sisters, 16 Kasrkin, 20 Repentia, 12 Seraphim, 6 Arco flags, 3 Penitent Engines, St. Celestine, 3 Inquisitors with every henchman sculpt, a Chimera, 3 Immies, and an Exorcist. Paid around $400 IIRC, so even though it was impulsive, it was far from being stupid!

Well my last impulse buy at FW was a lot smaller. Two days ago I bought two Vendetta Conversion Kits and then thought, why not, let's chuck in a quartet of Psycannon Razorback turrets. Not 100% sure what I'll use them for yet, but I do know that all the turrets of that style fit into the Planetstrike turret housings, so I could do an Inquisitorial Fortress w/automated Psycannon Turrets.

Saw them, wanted them, only just started to paint them.
Granted, got 5 for £10, so didnt lose anything really.
Also, it was the 1st time ive looked at a GW model and thought "wow, these are great quality" (simply for all of the detail in a simple cast)
after that ive now started building an army around them lol (basic termies suck too much in BA lists since there is alot of better choices, but im stuck with em now)

I think mine's a tie.
The first one was when I went into my FLGS to pick up some paint...and noticed they had a RW battleforce. I still haven't put it all together (just haven't had time/money to finish my DA, takes up less space in the box).
The 2nd is my first FW purchase, I had just graduated college and decided that I wanted to get something for myself, $300 bucks of DKoK later and I'm nowhere near a legal army.

A few different occasions over the years:
Necron big boxset when it was first released. Painted about half the army and sold it.
FW Avatar at the Glen Burnie Battle Bunker. I was so estatic to visit such a place and that I could get my GW addiction in resin. Still in the plastic baggy.
FW DA Ven Dreadnought via Forgeworld site: The model is ace, but I still cringe at that codex. Since that purchase, I've bought the Ravenwing big boxset and 2 DA Vet boxsets. Add in 10 Terminators from AoBR, and I nearly have a DA army.....all in bits and sprues.
Glad my wife doesn't visit this site.

Not surprising. A lot of those things have been standardised. The Reaper Autocannon from the Defiler fits into a Razorback mount. Hell, you can even put the Icarus Lascannon and the Quad-Autocannon from the Planetstrike turrets onto a Land Raider where the Heavy Bolter normally goes. Looks great.

1.) At one point I saw a guy had 3 separate auctions on Ebay for land raiders. They were going for around $25 and there was only an hour left. I figured I'd take a chance and bid on all 3, with a $30 max, hoping I'd win one. An hour later, all 3 auctions ended, and I won all 3 of them for $30 each. Sigh. I'm glad for the price but just wanted one.
Bonus points: A year later not a single one is painted or built, despite a further purchase of FW doors.
2.) Other purchases I got on impulse and sort of regret: Black Orcs (for use as Ard Boyz) - almost 2 years of bring primed and then reboxed, 2 skaven heroes (both primed and then reboxed) an Ironclad Dreadnought I totally did not need (which was partially primed and then reboxed), and to a lesser degree, about 25 Ork Boyz and around a dozen Burna Boyz, which are also nearing 2 years of bring primed and reboxed.
I also have a Valkyrie that I got maybe 60% done and abandoned - this one kinda stings the most because it was a fairly large purchase, I don'tplay IG (and never will) and really don't have anyplace to store it even if I do finish it. At least the above stuff falls into either the "I can field it" or the "just a cool model, but pretty cheap" category.
I've finally mostly stopped buying stuff until I clear some of the backlog, but even now I have top bid on an auction for 2 sprues of SM scouts that I don't especially need, have little inclination to paint, and will go nicely with my (primed and reboxed) Telion.
A lot my problems (maybe all of them) could be solved by just playing with unpainted minis, but I stalwartly refuse to field anything that is not completely and utterly finished.

Ugh, I just remembered. This isn't 40K though.
At one point, I had decided that 40K was too complicated and I'd try Warmachine (when the new remix book came out). My wife got my Karchev, and I got a Khador battle box, and my mom got me a Cryx battlebox for Christmas. I also have 2 other warjacks of some type. All of them were washed, filed, rewashed, primed, reboxed, and sit on the shelf even still. The Karchev I did get nearly all the way done - all but the axe. I regret this more then all the others I posted earlier since the chances of me ever actually playing Warmachine are slim to none, and I'd feel terribly guilty e-baying presents my mom and wife got me (I hate selling on ebay anyway).

The Raven's Talon. The former Apocolypse set of 17 sentinals for $175, basically instead of $20 a pop, they were $10.50. I bought it as I thought it was an incredible deal and I thought "hey maybe i'll like Apocolypse."
End result: assembled, painted, played 1 game of apoc, realized I absolutely hate apocolypse, and the new rules for 40K came out about 2 weeks later resulting in me taking a 2 year break from 40K. So end result $175+ paints+ modeling time= 1 game I hated. Have to admit, still think sentinals are cool though

My friend was coaxing me to start a new army, and I had always liked the idea of nids. So when he was online buying stuff for his new BA army, he asked if I wanted anything. I ended up, 2 weeks later, with 2 battleforces of nids. The worst thing is that it happened again 2 months later. out of the 152 models I have made from the boxes, I have painted only 31 models.
Another story. Ages ago a new magazine for LotR was released with GW miniatures. The first issue was sold for $5 Australian, and came with a sprue of 12 goblins warriors. Seeing this, I begged my parents and saved up enough to buy 6 sets. 72 goblins later I think I have primed maybe a handful. Later on in the set, I got every copy despite going for 3 times the first copies price, was another goblin sprue. So now I have 84 of the stupid things and really don't like playing LotR.
My friend is far worse though. When BA was released, he picked up his copy of the codex, went online and ordered 6 boxes of Death Company, Land Raider Redeemer, 2 Assault squads, 2 Tactical squads, Devastator squad, a couple of Baal Predators and 3 vindicators. In the space of a month, his new BA army now dwarfs the size of my DA. And I have been collecting and playing for 14 years.

My most impulsive buy would be my second Revenant from FW.
My mates at the time had both secretly built Warhounds (2 of them - 1 each).
Whilst I knew of one of them, when I found out about the other I had to even the score as they used to team up against me in Apoc games.
The first still isn't finished and the second is still in the box - two years later!
I'm now looking to impulsively buy the Phantom. Even although I don't even play apoc anymore.

If we're not talking about GW / 40k, one of my best "impulse" buy was a full-pro 1/10 RC car. Hundreds of dollars spent after work, a long night building & painting, and I was up & racing the next morning. Fastest buy-build-play so far. :nods:

To the OP
I just did exactly this thing. A Tiger Shark? On ebay? at £56? I'm bidding.
Two days later, I now own a Tiger Shark AX-10, but it was £102 including postage. I mean, I saved £40, but i really don't need it!
Still, it'll be nice when it's all painted up and sitting in the middle of my Tau army, I suppose....

When I made a big FW order on Elysians close to christmas. FW lowered the free postage price from 250 pounds to 150 pounds and when Elysians came with Grav-chutes.
I payed around 167 pounds on that order and was so happy I did. Never regreted buying them. Never!

I was walking past a second hand bookshop back when I was still a university student. I had £75 in the world before I fully maxed out my entire credit limit. I was already interested in Japan and saw a book in the window on Japanese Woodblock Art. Yoshitoshi's 100 Aspects of the Moon. It also had a lot of history stuff in it. It cost £40, and is still one of my favourite possessions 10 years later. I guess when you pay so much for something then you really appreciate it.

It was so impulsive that I called back either the next day or that same night and cancelled my order >.<
I did something similar. I had phoned up to ask where my younger brother's Elysian heads were, and if they were going to be delivered anytime soon. They told me that they would be another month, as they were having trouble keeping them in stock. I asked idly if they were having trouble with stocking anything else, such as the Keeper of Secrets they did (one of my favourite models). They said they had several of those in stock and would I like to order one. Two minutes later, I was the proud owner of a FW KoS, however I didn't have time to cancel the order due to "OMG I spent almost a hundred pounds on a model" as it arrived on my doorstep the next morning. They weren't kidding about it being quicker to ship. I remember my brother being a little sore about that... It's still one of my favourite models in my army .
