Post by: Taloncab

UPDATE - All sorted now and we're looking full. 12:15 start now followed by a couple of beers/cokes, possibly out of the trophies.

Hi all,

This will be the thread for any questions relating to the Boro Killteam tournament. Post away and feel free to discuss - the rules are far from nailed down but come the day I'll make sure all queries are answered one way or another.

Taloncab

Those currently 'in'
Ben G (Tantras)
Chris B (Taloncab)
Phil (Battlecannonitphil)
Bowesy (bigmits)
Kev (Corsair)
MattyM (Mattym)
Ross (jizzmonkey)
Chris Russell (mrJak)
Luke Berry
Evilmop
Wolf
Snowden (Booboohamster)

Rule clarifications
- You may only assign one universal special rule per model - up to three models
- Tyranids can ignore the synapse 12" range rule, but must have a synapse creature in their list (effectively unlimited range on the synapse)
- Items bought at list which confer bonuses to the unit still apply to the whole unit (chaos icons etc)
- Skills bought by a leader of a unit (exarch etc) can be used by him and any units in coherency in game
- Only actual swarms can have swarm special rule, Phil

There are a few silly little clarifications that will need to be made to play KT competitively. Even though it's all a bit of fun, people still need to know where they stand with it.

1) Tyranid Synapse. As Kev (Corsair) pointed out, this needs addressing. The rules for synapse in standard 40k mean that if a Tyranid unit isn't within 12" of a synapse creature at the start of their turn, they follow the rules for instinctive behaviour, which for some units means they run away and hide, for other units it means they run toward the closest enemy and try to batter them. Would we be keeping the 12" range? Would you say one synapse creature covers the whole battlefield? Would you say synapse itself it just ignored?

2) CSM Icons. If I purchase a squad of CSM, I can buy them an Icon to sex up their Attacks/Initiative/Save/Toughness, which affects the whole squad. How are we handling that for KT? Within a certain range? Just affects every friendly model? Something else?

There are probably a ton more (in fact I think there's a thread dedicated to KT over in the YMDC forums here on Dakka, I'll have a look later.) I shall post them as I think of them.

Looking forward to the tourney, though!

Alright - my opinions on the above:

Tyranid synapse rule - applies as it would in any other game. So you'll need to use your elite slot on a synapse creature (and keep it within 12") or suffer the consequences.

Icon/squad upgrades - I say that an item bought at 'list' stage will benefit the applicable squad as it usually would. The squad them acts as individuals once the game kicks off.

gun drones are attatched to a man , they need to stay with him, ie shield drone give him save.

looks like stealers kev.

do all my wolf scouts outflank at different places, or same table edge.

deamon host says only if you have an inquisitor, that mean you cant have him.

harliquin seers shroud makes unit night fight style to shoot, will this just be him as well, or will it affect them all like chaos icon.

ermmmmm no more questions for now

I'd love to participate in a tourney like this. Shame it's so far from me.

I'd ask 2 questions, were I able to participate.

1. Can dedicated transports bought for the unit carry only one model, or still carry the whole squad if it could fit "normally."

2. Would Wolf Banners affect every model making an assault that turn, or does it only affect the model holding the banner?

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/09/01 23:51:42

Post by: Albatross

We had a good laugh at the Warhammer World Dakka UK meet-up, Endova. I think there's a thread about it somewhere...

@Taloncab - I'm up for it, deffo. Won't be able to confirm until a bit closer to the date - that OK? Where is it, by the way?

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/09/02 08:50:38

Post by: Taloncab

Yo Albatross, no problem on confirming later on. No rush just wanted to give maximum notice. It's taking place in Boro Games Workshop on their tables.

Endova, we're not playing with vehicles, but i assume in normnal killteam you can take DT if you could in a normal list. The whole unit would need to be deployed in it at the start though i think.

Items like wolf banners, which give a bonus to the squad when the bearer charges would work, but only for the squad that was bought together in list phase. In my opinion.

Chris

Hey guys - glad to see another KT tourney happening, be sure to write lots of battle reports with pics!

Anyway, most of the questions asked in this thread relate to SQUAD level abilities that have been conferred by a unit upgrade. Exarch powers from the Eldar codex is another good example.

What I have house ruled before is as follows:

It affects all members of the squad which would normally benefit from the effect but they have to stay within 2" coherency range as if they were a squad in order to benefit from the Veil of Tears or Bladestorm.

This is to prevent weird situations happening such as two Dire Avengers bladestorming on one side of the table while two others dont. Also, Harlequins with VoT on all the time can play the hide and seek game - which can be somewhat frustrating for people without the right list to counter it - i.e. a horde to restrict movement.

Now then,

I think you should reconsider the ruling on Synapse for the following reasons:

Synapse in the regular game of 40k, if you set aside the fluff and consider just the game mechanics, has both benefits and drawbacks.

Instead of trying to convince you of the folly of enforcing synapse in Kill Team with some elaborate arguement, I'll just bullet point the benefits and drawbacks applicable to each game type and it should become obvious why it won't work in Kill Team without some modification.

Benefits

Standard 40k - Tyranids under the influence of Synapse are Fearless.

Kill Team - None

Drawbacks

Standard 40k - Squads must stay within 12" of Synapse or are subject to the instinctive behaviour rule. However, only one member of the squad need be in range, and the rest may 'fan out' well outside of this range.

Kill Team - Individuals must stay within 12" of Synapse or are subject to the instinctive behaviour rule. Because each model is an individual, this means every member must stay within 12" of a synapse creature, without the ability of the squad to fan out ala standard 40k.

The simplest way to get around this would be to forget about Synapse for the purpose of kill team. However, I've thought of some other ways you could build it in without breaking anything. It would still be nothing more than a drawback, as fearless doesn't really help you in kill team unless you're multiple wound and lose combat, but these could help mitigate the drawbacks...

In order of preference:

1 - Forget about Synapse

2 - Allow Synapse to 'bounce' or 'relay' from one creature to another, chain lightning style. eg; A Termagent who is within 12" of a Hormagaunt, who is in turn within 12" of a Synapse creature, counts as covered by Synapse.

3 - If a Synapse creature is alive and your force has been reduced to half strength, the Synapse creature automatically passes the test (why would Tyranids ever run away?)

I also have an unrelated question - when purchasing units, are we able to pay individual points costs for individual models, or do we need to purchase minimum squad sizes then field as individual units?

Thoughts please

Post by: Taloncab

Hi Kev,

Thanks for outlining your argument. It makes sense to me and I'll happily forget about the synapse issue when it comes to killteam, but I'd like to insist that you still have a synapse creature in your list.

The third option was mad! You must have just wanted a 3rd option and not thought this one through!

On minimum unit numbers - YES - you must take the minimum numbers of a squad.

I'll add this to the clarification list.

Phil - gonna deal with your requests over weekend (-:

Just a few questions from me.

1. Whats the deal with the wraithsight rule for eldar wraithguard? Will it be similar to the synapse ruling above?

2. Do bikes count as vehicles?

3. What happens with exarch powers that would affect the whole squad? For example dire avengers with bladestorm. Would they all have to 'bladestorm' on the same turn as each other or would it be each model bladstorming seperatly?

Now I need to hurry up and make a list so i can get it painted as I am the worlds slowest painter!

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/09/03 15:55:12

Post by: Yiawchuah

Bikes don't count as vehicles. Neither do jetbikes.

Read my post above re: Exarch powers - Taloncab has yet to officially approve it but I think its a reasonable way to deal with it!

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/09/03 23:26:09

Post by: Tantras

Yeah, a vehicle is anything with an armour value instead of a toughness value, Mr Bowes. I'm brewing up on Ork list with some Deffcoptas in, could be fun.

...then again, like the indecisive bastard I am, that's about the seventh list I've been through.

It was worth a try guv'

I'm happy with the current arrangement of ignoring Synapse but having to have some included in the force. This makes more than sense than including it as it was... and means the real 40k bad guys will show up for some fun! I'd been considering playing Chaos, but they're only half as scary

Phil - I'm only happy for you to abuse the game mechanics by giving a rough rider 'swarm' if you make up a swarm base of epic rough riders!!!

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/09/05 15:00:50

Post by: Taloncab

Yo all,

Bowesy, as Chuah said - exarch powers work if in coherency. Bikes don't count as vehicles and wraithsight will work the same as it would in 40k except the 6" is extended like we've done for the tyranid synapse thing.

Phil, drones need to stay with man to confer benefits. Nothing outflanks as nothing can be kept in reserves. Seer shroud will apply to the whole unit even if not together. You need an inquisitor to have a daemon host yes.

Hope that answers all your Qs. Luke is now officially 'in'. He's my bet for the best painted/modelled trophy.

Also other questions that have popped out before:

1. Chaos Daemons. You have to roll for preferred wave as normal if you have more than 1 unit per normal 5th ed rules. If you have just the one unit, then you can forgo the roll. For example, if you had a unit of Bloodletters and Daemonettes, you need to nominate the preferred unit to turn up on Turn 1. If you had 1 max Fiends of Slaanesh unit, that unit turns up Turn 1.

2. Applying universal rules. There are some common questions here as well:

- These have to be different in a Killteam, cannot have three guys with feel no pain
- Rending is not a universal special rule, therefore you can't give someone rending.
- Turboboost is generally a no-no
- Swarm. Only with a immensely good fluff reason / modelling. If this is applied to a model that already has stealth, then there is a good chance it will be disallowed - i.e. a 'swarm' SM scout with camo-cloaks...
- Rage. Don't ever take it. I still see people apply it for some reason. It's a disadvantage.
- Slow and purposeful - don't take it - might as well take relentless
- Stubborn - this has VERY limited usefulness in a Kill Team game. UNLESS the KT organiser rules that the guy with the highest leadership and stubborn is not subject to the cumulative leadership modifier at half strength... if so, it could be a competitive choice
- Fearless - VERY limited use in a KT game.

Yiawchuah wrote:

Bear in mind that Slow & Purposeful also grants you relentless (it's within the body of the text). So it does give you the potential to have two heavy weapons that can move and shoot, should that fit into your list.

Yea thought so regarding points, at least it makes it easier to narrow down what team to use!

Another question from me. I know that we are not allowed to take any HQ choices but what about units such as Warlocks? They are in the HQ section of the codex (although they can not be taken on their own) but can be taken as part of Guardian squads and Wraithguard squads. In the normal game of 40k the warlock doesn't count as a HQ choice but thought I'd check for Kill Team too.

or in short - Can I use a warlock?

Wolf! You're more than welcome to come along. I'll put you on the list. Should be a good way to spend a crappy Sunday. If you PM me I'll send you the original email containing all the information.

Albatross - the idea of booze meets 40k fills me with dread and delight at the same time. A killpoints shots game sounds great - though I fear there would be an immense amount of Deathwing terminators sqauds of 10 to minimise drinking from beardos.

However, I'll happily bring along a bottle and a few shot glasses to the killteam tourney for a sneaky trial game! Anyone else keen - we'll have the shop till 5! Could be a good one for people who are out.

There are other drinking variants too I bet. What about killteam where you have to drink a fraction of drink depending on how you get your guys killed. So my 7 plague marines would be a seventh of my pint every kill. Or you could line up 7 shots or whatever. Could be fun.

Bigmits - Warlocks are fine if there is a way you can purchase them as part of a squad and they don't count as HQ. So warlocks are fine yeah.

I'm well excited about this guys - gonna be class! I've just put the order in for the trophies. I still have to agree the lettering.. what does everyone think:

- Boro Kill Team Championships 2010
- World Kill Team Championships 2010
- Kill Team World Cup 2010

sorry, I haven't read the whole thread, but I think you need a model count requirement. The kill team rules give a huge advantage to armies like guard, or orks, or tyranids. In otherwords, kill team favors who feilds the most models, If there was a model requirement, this could be fixed, anc kill team tourneys could be awesome rather than being based off arsemonkeys like me gaming the system and running a guard platoon.

I don't think a limit on numbers makes sense. I've seen plenty of tactical squads batter a bunch of 5+ armoured gritsters.

I'll be trialling my plague marines with slight modification on last time's group. If they perform well I'll be sending them off in their Rhino up the M1 to boro in October.

Ben and I went to the shop today for a mooch around and we noticed the back door now has STAFF ONLY across it!

Asked one of the guys in store who said they'd closed it off due to excessive pinching of items out of LoS of the shop staff :-/

(Consequently, Ben had to pay for the Giant he was carrying around...)

Hope this doesn't interfere with our planned tourney!

I spoke to the guys today actually and they said we should be able to sort out using the room just for us on that day. If anything goes missing we know who is to blame then! Think this should be fine to be honest but will follow up.

Got battered at a KT tourney today - may rethink my force (-:

what is there to pinch anyways , unless people were sneaking up stairs. or is it more people carrying stuff out back then bagging it

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/09/20 16:11:56

T-Bagging it.

Think it was more about Snowy sneaking upstairs and stealing the virginity of the shop's hamsters.

The staff were angry that they didn't get to watch, so now these things are planned in advance.

Gaming, however, is business as usual.

It works like this.

The Kill Team mission in the Battle Missions book says you cannot put any units in reserve. So this means that deepstrikers, normal reserving and outflanking does not work.

However, there are a number of Codex specific instances which overrides this:

1. The entire Chaos Daemons army
2. Lictors for Tyranids
3. Deepstriking terminators whose terminator armour wargear entry indicates that they can deepstrike no matter the mission. Space Wolves CANNOT do this.

Hopefully this clarifies the situation.

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/09/29 11:55:17

Post by: Tantras

I'm curious, Chuah, does it say somewhere that the codex trumps the Battle Missions book? Sure it's in black and white that it supersedes the rules in the BRB, but does it say the same for Battle Missions?

It may say so in the Battle Missions book itself, I've got no idea. My copy has gone walkies somewhere.

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/09/30 13:16:03

Post by: Yiawchuah

If you look in the Space Marine, Chaos Space Marine and Blood Angels codexes - not sure about the rest - it says that terminators can deepstrike no matter the mission.

Quoting verbatim from the CSM book, pgae 86, "they may always start the game in Reserve and arrive using the Deep Strike rules, even if it is not part of the mission being played".

Since Kill Team is a type of mission (as opposed to the ones in the BRB), the wording for terminator armour would still apply, being that terminators can ignore these restrictions.

In reality though, feel free to house rule it and inform participants in the Boro tourney that terminators cannot deepstrike - this should solve your problem if you feel that it doesn't fit the tourney.

The kill team rules usually allow vehicles but most KT tourneys house rule that vehicles can't be used anyway!

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/09/30 13:28:51

Post by: Tantras

I wouldn't mind vehicles as long as armour didn't go above 10 at any point, I think it'd be a laugh.

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/10/01 00:03:37

Post by: Taloncab

Nah, not me either. Let's allow it then. Still I say no vehicles still. I'd happy say arm 10 ok, but we've already set the parameters, i think too late to really change now.

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/10/01 13:52:22

Post by: Battlecannon it phil

Yeh keep no vehicles as they are gay. so time to bust out the vanguard vets and heroic intervention them (maybe not) dont think anyone will take ds stuff anyways. do they have to drop as a unit or seperate, as they deploy as seperate models

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/10/01 17:55:28

Post by: Corsair

Well the idea of KT is that there's tons of cover around, so if you deepstrike then be prepared to lose your guys to deepstrike mishaps.

I don't mind so much but the idea of someone starting a game with no models on the table bothers me...

Maybe play it that deepstrikers have to deepstrike on the first turn? With no turn limit, they have to show up sometime anyhow so it's pointless the other player shuffling his guys around a blank table waiting for the dice to roll right.

Taloncab wrote:Have sent you a PM dude to sort things out but the more the merrier I reckon.

What is the actual format of the tournament? Are we going to have straight knockout though to a final?

If so, may want to limit the total players to 16 (assuming we can get many!) and then we can set the matchups, so if anyone can maybe get in an early game for the first round and report their result, it could speed things up on the day.

I'm more than happy to RANDOMLY SELECT the matchups from the comfort of my bathroom and post the tournament tree on here... if you wish... ;-)

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/10/04 15:05:58

Post by: Taloncab

OK - not that anyone will be using, but if we do deepstrike non-daemon stuff (daemons all pop down 1st turn) then each individual model must roll to come one. It means there is a risk of your guys dripping down onto the battlefield but that's just tough.

On the tournament format. We'll be using a group system so everyone gets a few games at least. The top players in the groups will then play each other world cup KO stylee (winner group A takes on runner up group B etc.) I'll send more details closer to the time but that's how it will go.

We'll be drawing the groups in front of everyone before the tourney starts so no accusations of cheating.

More details to follow soon but please be aware that your final list must be PM'd/emailed to me by Friday 15th at the latest for me to check etc.

One last thing. We should ideally play wysiwyg but what is everyone's opinion on minor proxying?

Chris

Post by: Taloncab

I myself will have to select a new list. I was going to have 7 sternguard, and use two devastator models as stern with heavy weapons, but if we're going to be massively strict then this wouldn't be a possibility.

I'm a bit worried this will make people feel a little excluded. Anyone else have an opinion either way?

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/10/05 16:12:12

Post by: Tantras

Yeah, I think it's perhaps a little late in the race to announce that it's strictly wysiwyg. I for one will have to play something different to what I had planned because I just don't have the time/cash to prepare something especially for this... unfortunately there's nothing in my CSM list or Necron list that would be particularly good.

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/10/05 17:20:46

The only thing I would have a problem with is if it was overly confusing

If it's very simple to follow, for example all grenade launchers are plasma guns or something I'm fine with that

yeh i supose a unit of mainly sternguard with 2 devs in fine, but my granade launchers are actually plazma guns is not in my eyes, and his powerfist is actually a power sword rubbish as well. get silly my 5 uriki are actually thunder hammer storm shield terms. wysisyg should be for all weapons so their is no confusion.

Hi everyone.

Right - we're all sorted for next Sunday (17th). We have a pretty much full capacity of 12 (just waiting on one confirmation) and despite the shop no longer having a games room we have two tables reserved from 12:30.

More details to follow

Chris

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/10/07 19:24:04

Post by: Corsair

Okay, two groups... A & B, 6 players each group.

Everyone plays each other once? That's going to be 15 games per table, before you get to the semi finals and finals.

Shop kicks out around 16:30, so that works out at 16 minutes per game with the semi's and final being fought over the bench outside the early learning centre.

How does that sound?

What is the armour value of mr potato head

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/10/08 16:26:49

Post by: Taloncab

Mr potato head is a vehicle so you can't use it anyway.

Anyway, just thought I'd drop the last update now as all is sorted and ready to roll. We'll be playing a regatta system in order to get everyone at least 2 games and to be able to have a winner and 3rd place all done within 4 hours. I also have an impartial judge to make the selection on best painted/modelled award.

Please aim to arrive by 12:15 in order for us to do the draw and kick off at 12:30 sharp.

So of the 12 players (1-12), Player 1 will play player 2, 3 will play 4, 5 will play 6 etc, with the winners advancing and the losers going into a plate pool. Here the losers will play each other in KO format until two remain, who will be thrown into a KO system with the remaining six winners. Quarters, semis, then eventually 3rd place play off and final. It's 20 games in total (10 games per table) and most games take between 5-25 mins (about 20 mins on average). So we should be done well within 4 hours. We'll then have the winners ceremonies (photos, trophies etc) and then head off to Isaacs for some grub/beer etc.

Any question let me know but rememeber you need to send me your army list no later than 5pm on Friday 15th in order for me to check it.

Thanks everyone see you all next weekend.

Chris

I like these rules, they're well thought out and should allow us enough time to finish. Never seen this system used in practice, actually, and it'll be interesting to see how you get 2 qualifiers from a knockout group of 6 people

Taloncab wrote:most games take between 5-25 mins (about 20 mins on average).

Are the 5 minute games the ones we have against Ross?

Last question...

... are we allowed to use loaded ?

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/10/09 03:44:04

Knock out group of 6. That's the only imperfect part. 6 turns to 3, then as unfair nature intended, one of the three gets a by, and the other two fight it out for a place. Harsh. But I need to get it to an even number, but the losers are living on a prayer anyway. If it works at henley-on-thames, i'll take it. And on ross, I fancy him as a dark horse. The only one with anything to live up to is you kev, cos of all your wise cracks :-)

Yeah it's a big shame we didn't get to finish the final Snowy, very gracious of you to surrender as you did.

Sure I'd blown more than 50% of your force to pieces as you crossed the board, but Sharpe's rifles were still standing I think, and that pisses me off, hahah!

Cracking day, all said and done.

Those orks were ludicrous. At one point a couple of them dived onto the floor, popped off a shot each into a couple of the Emperor's finest and they bit the dust. Took me to town they did.

And Patrick the nob was hard as nails

My my what an impressive choppa! All luck from Patrick and his boys like. I should have won the tournament with that list for sure. God knows how ben won it. The paint work on those orks is excellent too. You might have even picked up the best painted if not for luke. Oh and i've popped a letter to GW HQ thanking manager dave for letting us play and helping choose the best painted army. Let's organise another soon yes. It's an ideal format. I've even started constructing more scenery so I can play at home! It's looking good too.

Good little event we had going on there. Just a few notes about the day in general that I'd like to share.

First off... I was robbed.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I think Ben's army was virutally unbeatable by the forces that showed. Short of everyine fielding Tyranids (or a unit of Spartans) he was bound to come out on top. Especially as we didn't get matched up.

As for my own performance... Well, those that managed to scrape a result against me should take a long hard look at themselves and know how fortunate they were. I don't think there'll be any argument over that point. I mean, those ridiculous Ork 'sharpshooters' managed to take down my Zoanthrope in their first round of shooting (that's right folks, three Orks armed with gat-guns on spray and pray duty). Outrageous.

And don't even get me started on those Plague Marines.

At least Wolf's Tau did the decent thing when I gave them the good news (from the business end of a fleshborer), and rolled around screaming.

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/10/22 00:37:32

Haha ! Damned Tau being crap at pretty much everything. Let's be fair htough I used all my luck in that game on those 6 cover saves haha !

I think Pip had a very legitimate chance of beating me, the Rough Riders' lances would've prevented me from using WBB and the Ratlings would've done the same if they'd luckily rended me. As it turned out though, luck just wasn't on his side. He failed a boat load of 3+ cover saves and I passed a fair few 4+ cover saves.

I honestly believe the Orks would give the Necrons a sound thrashing if they met again.

I was so absorbed in shooting things I forgot that Orks are awesome in combat and now I know the Metal Mickies only get one attack in combat, even the Grots would have a field day with them.

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/10/22 12:39:36

What do we think of this by Snowey? I'm not sure on IG orders. My instinct says they don't work.

SNOWEY: How sads this, work has already begun on a new Kill Team, but I have a few questions that I just need sorting ...

Imperial Guard Orders ...

1) If an order is issued to a unit, does the whole unit receive the benefit where-ever they are on the table.

2) If the above is true and the Kill Team consists of two Infantry choices and they are combined, would they all benefit from the orders.

I certainly hope this is the case, because I'd really prefer to take normal guards rather than the beardy Vet's that everyone seems to love.

Food for thought.

Snowy

Could be nasty. How many guys can you fit in there for 200pts? You can sneak in some heavy weapons too, I think.

P.s. Chris, only the Plasma Cannon and Missile Launcher would've outranged me and caused a threat... I'd get cover saves from both most times and even a WBB roll against the Plasma Cannon. You would've bitten the fat one.

I'm assuming you have to use the correct deployment choices for Guard, so been looking at Platoon Command Squad and two Infantry Platoons as is the minimum required.

No Heavy Weapon Squads, Vet's (wahoo) or Special Weapon squads, just good ol' fashioned Guardsmen ! (25 models in total)

Also I've had these guards for years, since I bought them off Philbert, so finally gives me a reason to paint them.

Could be fun to take 3 Infantry squads, combine them all and watch the laser goodness ...

Also it would mean the team would be the same as the Orks, at 35 models, but I think the first plan is best.

I don't think it'd play that much differently to the Orks, mate. Massed numbers of not-very-good guys. Wouldn't an elite alternative be more interesting for you?

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/10/26 21:56:55

Post by: Booboohamster

I think this force will be far more Elite than the Orks, but as for playing a 3+ save team of 6 to 8 guys ... maybe.

I do like Space Marines, but it's really easy to fail one save and you don't get much for your points.

Eldar would be fun if they didn't cost so bleedin much in points.

Chaos Space Marines could be fun, maybe Tzeentch or Slaanesh for a bit of colour.

Tbh I really think this new team will be a lot more than most forces can handle, I'll find out tomorrow when I test it against Luke.

Cool, post up here and let us know how it goes, mate.

Bear in mind, too, that it was only our little tournament which outlawed vehicles. Normally they're fair game. That changes things massively... not only will some armies take them, but others must employ precautions against them. Might be worth trying them out!

I very nearly brought an Eldar Killl Team. It was 5 Pathfinders (super scouts) and 5 Fire Dragons. Both of which would've murdered things like Plague Marines and Terminators. Probably would've been absolutely wrecked by your Ork horde or Kev's gak horde, though. Such is balance.

Well I just gave the Guard a whirl.

Game 1 - Versus Luke's Marines, who were meant to be Stern Guard, but didn't use any of their abilities barring one 'No cover' shot and forgot they had an extra attack in hand to hand, went to Leadership's and I failed my third one with only a single Marine on the table surrounded by Guardsmen.

Game 2 - This time with real Stern Guard. Luke thought it would be funny to use my dice ... I lost horrifically. First turn of the game saw one heavy weapons team and a Plasma gun die to sharp shooting Marine Heavy weapons.

Conclusion: Even though I had my a**e handed to me, I still believe the Guard have a real good chance. I'll be tweaking my force slightly, maybe snip the ends of their Las-guns off and turn them into Immortal Guardsmen. Also I must stop piling forwards with the Guardsmen in nice ranks, this is not a Napoleonic game ...

Just as a follow up to this thread.

Luke, Gibbo and I have played a few more games of Kill Team and we've come to a fairly conclusive result ...

... you need to use more terrain.

We've started playing games with about 5 to 8 solid buidings with about half as many ruins plus additional cover and it makes the games far better.

They do restrict long range teams, but it does make for far more interesting games and finally the Guard have started winning games !!

In light of this Luke and I, mainly Luke actually, have begun construction of more scenery in preparation. I would very strongly recommend giving it a go.

Good call, I’ve been playing a few more games in a similar vain and it seems that its not so much long range shooting (which my sisters were guilty of) but a bit more balance to win...

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/11/09 13:30:52

Post by: Tantras

Hrrrrmm. So your team starts to win and thus it's a more balanced game, Snowy? I'm dubious.

As an example, in the final between you and I, I'd say probably 80% of the wounds I scored against you were subject to a 4+ cover save because of the big crater over the middle of the table. (I obviously don't KNOW that it was 80%, but it seems a reasonable estimate). I can't see that it would've made a massive difference.

In fact, now that I think about it, it would've made no difference in my game against Pip for the same reason (he got 4+ cover against a very high percentage of my shots anyway) nor against MrJak... because his stuff was in power armour and cover was irrelevant.

I don't know. You guys have playtested it, not me, but I don't think the boards we played on were bad really.

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/11/09 13:53:08

Post by: MrJak

Oh I agree that you'd have kicked my ass anyway. You were just plain better in that game
Just saying that what I've seem seems to make games with loads more terrain play out a bit better and it makes it harder to simply ‘hole up’ in a building to shoot it out (again, something I was guilty of) forcing you to carefully pick fire corridors, cover and all that jazz.

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/11/09 20:11:06

Post by: Kimchee

It hasn't been about cover saves as much as it has been being able to actually get out of LOS, so smaller sized teams aren't just blown away by hails of lasgun fire etc. in the first turn. Cover saves are fine, but the more saves you force, something is going to give. I think we had a nice set-up terrain wise, and I agree wholeheartedly that more LOS blockers would give more options tactically, but I would worry that more terrain would slow the games down that little bit which would be bad as we were snug for time anyways (and I doubt Snowy's car wants another cold night in Dundas car park). Mind, we could always play round mine if we felt we wanted a bit more of an open-ended time limit. I could ship the domestics away for the day.

FWIW, I don't think the codices are always balanced for normal play, let alone small skirmish games. TBH I think it's all going to be based on your terrain allocation - if your tourneys have less cover, then IG teams etc are some good - loads of mediocre troops but law of averages firmly on your side, and usually lots of cheap special/heavy weps. More cover, and you're starting to worry about assaulty teams getting a safe walk into combat, and making certain battlesuits very "fun" [/bitter tears]. That, and some codices will just have better options at different points value games (plus you can imagine that if anything is particularly annoying in one tourney, the next will see every counter-tactic known to man). I certainly think the game is weighted towards certain lists. I just turn up to be an annoyance though so doesn't bother me.

Was thinking, there's an article I was perusing in a WD from around the release of the original Cityfight I think, had a bunch of mission objective type things in, and rules for using them in that "40k in 40 minutes" ruleset. Could be worth a look if we find that the standard Kill Team "kill dudes" thing loses its lustre. Can make funky objective markers too!

Good chat on the terrain issue. I've been building some imperial bunkers and power stations over the weekend so should bring them next time too. I think that there wasn't enough cover in the games we played. But I don't think much more was needed. Either way kill team is not meant to be bullet proof rules/fairness wise. It's all about playing a lot of games relatively quickly, which i why i enjoy it, along with playing more 750pt games.

This is a great read so far guys. I'm looking at doing something similar for my local store.

Did you guys have any problems of some armies sitting back and just firing? We were thinking of adding objectives and scoring them similar to the 40K video game. You run up and put a marker on the objective. At the beginning of your turn you score points for each objective claimed.

We had a fair mix of armies I'm pleased to say, mate. Two 'horde' armies, one of which was Orks and the other Tyranids. I don't recall the exact model counts, but they were both in the low thirties I believe. Two plague marine teams, one Tau list mixed with a huge battlesuit and some fire warriors, a sternguard list (very versatile with the ammo), a necron list, a Sisters of Battle list and an IG list. Although it didn't work out well for him in the end due to bad rolls, I still believe that the IG list was probably the best one there. Again, can't remember exact numbers, but it was something like ten ratlings and eight or so rough riders.

As for sitting back and firing... I did it (with Necron Immortals), the SoB list did it, the Sternguard did it and both Plague Marine lists did it. That's just how it works out I guess. The boards are so small that you can be in range on the first turn a lot of the time. It was a great laugh and nice and brief which was necessary because of the store opening hours, but I think it would definitely be more fun with objectives of some sort.

To be fair most Named characters would be to expensive and not worth the points, in some cases. Vehicles would make it interesting, not sure if it would be to tough though if one was included. The amount of terrain we had wasn't so bad, maybe a few pieces more would make it ideal.

Boro Killteam tourney @ 2010/11/11 21:10:34

Most named characters are HQ, which are not allowed in Kill Team.

Vehicles would concern me, only because it forces all teams to have answers if they turn up, plus when the answer can be relatively easily picked out ...

I'd be interested to see what sort of restrictions would have to be brought in.

I'd be really keen to use objectives, this could make for a more entertaining game.

There are quite a few named characters that aren't HQ choices. Marbo, Telion, Corbulo, Doom of Malantai, Lukas the Trickster... just off the top of my head. There's probably ten or so, maybe more, if I ransacked all the codices.
