Hello out there in Mini land! I this is my second attempt to make a successful motivated blog. I am a long time GW enthusiast and am (like most gamers) constantly jumping from project to project. I have many painted armies but in no way would call myself a particularly good painter. Infact I am more of a tournament player than a painter/modeler. Some of you may have seen my other blog some several months ago (thats still a project I am working on lol). Unlike that project which fell to the wayside I plan to follow through with this till I make at least an 1850 list and or paint all the left over models I have sitting around from previous projects. The base from which I am building this army is all unpainted models I had here. I will then add more models to make this army better and more congruent. This is in no way to be a tournament army list (which is my norm).

I am normally a dark angels player for 40k (although I play a ton more fantasy.) so this is a chance for me to switch it from dark colors all the time to something bright and new. I was very fortunate to win round 2 of fantasy ard boyz this year!! This is my second year in a row winning it and I will have an empire army any day now thanks to GW! You may see some of them in here, maybe not lol.

My goal is to update this as much as possible and not go weeks on end with no results. I have painted the first model for the force; a force commander. Heres a few pics. Sry if there not the worlds greatest quality pics. I dont have a great camera. I actually think the model looks better in person, but the pic sure shows some areas of needed improvement. I have never painted yellow before. Yes here and there but not whole models, not in my entire 13 years of warhammer. What do you all think? Q and C welcome!

I have always liked the Imperial Fists but shied away from them because of all the yellow. I think all he needs is a Badab Black wash on his armor to make it pop a little more and he will be great.

Black? Hmm ok I will try it in a test fig. Right now hes washed with sepia (Gw). Then highlighted up. Not dark enough?

You have picked two warm tones. I think your scheme would really pop with some green detailing or blue detailing. Or you could do some bold highlighting for more visual interest. as it is its just a bit boring. Especially for a force commander, Maybe you normal space marines could look like this and you could do a bit more detailing on the more important guys.

Also you could drill the barrels of the gun.

The sword being all one color is a bit too simple as well.

Dont get me wrong the painting is good but just not very interesting.

Even if this wasn't your first time using yellow as a primary color, I like how the model came out. But I would agree that a wash of Badab Black would really help it out. I use that color of wash on almost all of my models cause it has the most effect.

Hello! and thanks for the comments! I appreciate your advice about the warm tones but I am painting them according to their chapter specific color scheme which is yellow and red, I like to follow those base lines but I will be adding a few things here and there. Also i will try to take some pics in the morning with stronger lighting so you can see the shading/high lighting better as i think it looks better in person then online. I tried adding some "power" effect to the sword but hated how it came out so scraped it. Have an tips for me??


Field_Mouse are you implying washing the entire models armor or just the recesses? As there are already washes in the recesses of sephia. But maybe i need a darker tone.

Thank you sage heart! I appreciate that. I bases them white. Then using my trusty GW spray gun sprayed them Iyaden base. Heavy wash of sephia wash. Then a layer of golden yello (mostly by drybrush but some hard line.) a layer of sunburst yellow (again same as last color). Then a final layer of 1:1 sunburst and skull white.

As a further update, as I was off ALL DAY today (YAY!) I spent the entire day painting a whole unit of terminators (from start to finish minus the base coat i did last night)! I will be posting pics tomorrow as I have to finish flocking there bases. Check back in the afternoon tomorrow for pics! as always Q and C welcome!

Lighting is making it difficult to see how the sepia wash looks. Does the
photo match reality?

Looks good. put some darkening on him. To make him look weathered.

His backside is very yellow, maybe you could paint the eagles in a diffren colour, or perhaps painting his mantle red?

But yea, paint the eagles and fancy bits gold or sumthing. Also, I reckon you give him a red cloak or black or something. A bit too much yellow.

Ok well here's a short update. I finished the termies as stated earlier but couldnt get the pics done before work so I will be posting later. Also I will be taking (hopefully) better pics of the commander to maybe show the shading better. If you guys still don't like it I will try the wash.

Ok so here we go! I got the termie pics now. What do you think? is the yellow better contrasting? Also i noticed 2 errors before anyone speaks up lol. I forgot to paint the black recesses in the inner thighs of the termies and one of the termies needs his back of knee black cleaned up. Working on that today and also a new ride for these termies, a land raider! Then i have 2 tact squads then need to start planning for the future of this army!

They look a lot better in the lighter pictures at the bottom - make sure you get some nice clear light on them when you are taking pictures.

The yellow looks very flat in the other images and without much contrast, but in the more natural light of the last 2 images they look a lot better (especially the last image).

Might want to consider painting the power cables etc a different colour, but that is up to you.

Oh on I didn't think abiut the cables. I think I will. Also the last 2 are with no flash I will take more like that next time.

Short update. I have the base layer of Iyaden down on a Landraider and my first 10 man tact squad. Hopefully in tomorrow or the next day i will have some pics of them as there coming along, as well as pics with the touch ups i needed on the termies!

Ok Its been 1 month since my last post! Sry for the delay I am trying to use this to keep motivated so I am back on track. I am almost finisihed with the first tactical squad as said before, but @ and a half weeks ago I got married and all gaming related anything stoped cold! But back from the honeymoon I am in the game again. Pics very very soon (day or two at best.) Also i got 3 new shelves to display models on and I will be posting some pics hopefully of my collections/ dark angels soon!

Ok! As promised with far too many breaks inbetween here are some pics of the first finished tact squad. Here are also pics of the finished terminators and the captain. Included are a pic of the WIP Land raider also.

I have included a few sparse (not close up) pics of me dark angels. Yes i know i know there are a few unpainted models, but like 85 percent are done. Last count was over 12K in Dark angels and I have more than that for sure. Over 70 terminators and 8 tactical squads. So this is just a pic to drop on some of my other projects like my necrons too. I think you can even see some of my blood angel "adeptus mechanicus" army in there as well right above the necrons.

Btw as stated before the long delay is part because of getting married and being away for 2 weeks, working on a commision (skaven) and just painting some non yellow stuff lol. Sry again for the poor pics, they destroy any good yello contrast.

Yeah but if you combined me and my brothers forces each and every single army we have of 40k. We would get 20k points. 14k of space marines

I like your pastel appraoch to the yellow armor. Its nice to see the tint changed up from time to time...great work.

Thank you! I just felt that the bright vibrant yellow was too gaudy. Mine is more like slighly brighter than off yellow I think.

Your necrons look cool as flook!

I find my camera phone is actually pretty good, but its 5mp. In the kitchen in the afternoon is the way to go! Go as close as your focus lets you and stablise your hand on something or just with the way you lean on your kitchen surface.

Probably a lot more pro's out there to give you better advice but Ive been getting nice results recently that way. Beam lights are great too.

Base layer iyaden darksun
Heavy wash gryphon sepia
Heavy drybrush golden yellow
Heavy drybrush sunburst yellow
Medium drybrush 50/50 sunburst yellow and white

Red:

Gw red foundation (forget name)
Wash baal red
Hardline highlight blood red

Silver:

Boltgun metal washed black

huh, that's interesting. Where did you get the primer for the starting color. I like that scheme, I may want to try it out! Great work!

Well the primer is made by a company Board to Pieces. I use there white, its half the price of GW's and is just as good IMO. The base yellow (Iyaden Darksun) is made by GW and i apply it with an air brush but you could just back hand if neccesary.

Short update for anyone interested

My land raider is about 50 percent complete know. I will have more info plus pics soon. I am still finishing that darned plague furnace for someone so the fists are only a couple day hold. More later Thanks!

Ok way over due pics as usual. I actually did a few other small projects before i finished this so thats why i havent posted for a while. I have picked up some more models for the force though. I have a second tact squad to paint, 10 sternguard, a lysander (a must for any real fist army), 2 Rhinos (or could be razorbacks) and a drop pod. Oh and 5 cc terminators. SO i have alot left. But complete is a commander, a tact squad, 5 shooty terminators, and a godhammer pattern raider!! Yay! Incase you were wondering my side project i mentioned were 10 chaos marines (slaaneh) 10 khorne bezerkers and 2 chaos rhinos, but now the fist are back! lol

So what do you think? Q and C welcome. Sorry again for the pic quality, makes the yellow not seem as bright as it really is.

After straightening my neck again, the LR looks good. One small point I would make is the top could do with some more datails picking out just to break up the yellow a bit more. Even painting the grills by the exhausts might do it. Otherwise, very nice.

One thing you really need to do is show what chapter they are. Currently they are yellow marines, I don't see a single IF marking. Rather than repaint the captain's cloak, a stripe around the edge would give it some more life; he's the captain afterall.

Ok so i have cleaned and assembled 10 sternguard, pedro cantor, and lysander (I am painting them all at the same time.) They are based white and now the first yellow layer is on, hopefully pics soon and a better update!!

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. They are still coming along as I have said due to my random projects I am just finishing 3 jacks and a warcaster for my menoth force but don't fret the imp fists are still in the works!

Well after a month of no updates I am back. In stead of painting models for my imperial fists (as i probably should) I have instead been working on some other projects. 1 was finishing my raven wing contingent for my DA, and 2 I built a new table! Its 2 4x4 sections so i can play any combo of GW game sizes and i can play warmachine. What do you guys think? Sorry this pics are semi dark. I can take more if people want me too, also i corrected the land raider pics so there facing the right direction ont sideways!

You will see some unfinished terrain in the back groud. We just finished a battle prior to these pics. Some of the building are 40k terrain and some are from my last Mordheim campaign i was in!

Also i included a far shot of my necrons (just like on the table) from my shelf. I am in a tournament on the 5th next month and have 7 destroyers on my painting table currently being finished for the event. But thats what I have done now. Though i would include it for fun!

Haha that's hilarious! Yes I am a bit "too much" into the hobby. That's what my wife says anyway. But thank you lol. I paint pretty fast but my problem is jumping between projects over and over. This week I plan to paint 7 destroyers, 3 heavy destroyers, 2 scarab swarms, and a tomb spider. And if I have time I will finish this menoth revenger I have sitting here! But I am waiting for some paint in the mail before I can begin so I guess I will work on some land speeders.

Fair play sticking with getting those bikes done. I'm only on my first bike and I already want to scrap them. I've got another 10 or so to do plus two plastic attacks bikes and three of the older plastic/metal ones that I need to refurbish.

Don't worry about being too far in, its too late to save ourselves now. Might as well just enjoy the ride. Personally my ride is going to take me through twenty of so assault marines (being stripped), three tac squads ready to go in for a bath, around forty terminators that need saving and six dreads (three metal, three plastic). And all of that before I get to my new stuff which is still on the sprues.

I was originally doing a templar successor, then switched it to an IF successor but now I just don't have a clue tbh. I'm taking some of my marines out and creating a Doom Legion army at the moment. If it goes well then I may turn them all to the Legion otherwise I have to think of something else for the rest of them

That Land Raider is helping to influence me starting an Imperial Fist army....

Haha thanks! It was actually a chaos raider I had sitting around unassembled and since I was working in some fists I was like I am putting in the collection. Added some loyalist parts instead of spikes and chaos stars and bam there it is!

Good news! My paint has arrived and I have begun the next chunk or necrons.

I was using Gw tentacle pink but in their infinite wisdom they stopped it's production so off bartertown I secured 2 basically full bottle. Way more than needed. But it showed up and i will post pics soon.

Table looks good. That the oul pva, grit, gravel and spray technique? Looks better than how mine turned out in the past anyhow! So much better playing games on a decent board with painted models.

Hello! After writing a huge post about 3 minutes ago, my computer crapped out on me and now I am starting again... Here we go.


Tonight i primed the necron lot I am working on. Also i finished the bases for all of them. Here is a pic of the bases all done. Now before anyone says they look plain, i want them too. I call it "alien desert". Barren waste land. Its like the color of the moons sand. Its a simple 3 color drybrush over sand. But anyways its finished for now. Tomorrow i will start the actual models.

Now you as I am sure by now noticed that my necrons are pink. Interesteing story as to how that occured. When the game Dawn of War necron expansion came out for the PC both me and my friend marty bought it. We decided one afternoon we would get online at a certain time to play. I decided to use the "army painter" in the game and do something funny, make a crazy looking army. So when the game began my friend realized he was playing against PINK necrons. He felt extra dumb after i beat the crap outta him lol. After the game we were talking and he said they looked like peptobismal on the field. Hence the name NECRO-BISMAL as my army is called locally lol. I told him if i ever did necrons they would be pink... here they are.

Just one of my random projects. I am working to finished them in 2 days as i need they done before the 5th which is a local tourney i will be battling them in.

Here is a pic of the lot i am working on, some of the finished bases, and 1 destroyer i painted before just to show you what they will all look like. I also need to come up with some "necrony" way to designate squads as i am useing 3 5 man destroyer units and they get close and i cant tell whose who. Any idea's anyone?

I finished all of these models tonight. In about 4 hours of work. Not my best job just good enough for table top. I did it all here in PITTSBURGH watching my home team the steelers represent! Off to the super bowl. AGAIN!

Meh! Necrons in general just don't do it for me I'm afraid. I'm a marine man through and through (don't know if you guessed from my sig, lol.)

I think your necrons could use some more depth, and maybe some more colours.

My first marines were Imp Fists. They have a special place in my heart. You do them justice. My only recommendation is to drill out those barrels and perhaps do another wash and edge highlight.

I really like the Necrons. Pink is a nice change from just plain metal like most I've seen. And I like pink, so that probably helps. Nice collection and nice work. Looking forward to see what you're working on right now, when it's finished of course.

Ok so as i said before I am in a tournamen tomorrow! I am actually playing my Dark Angels Deathwing army but since the FAQ made them WAY BETTER I decided I needed a new belial with a Thunderhammer stormshield. So here is my Lysander for my fists, but tomorrow he is my Counts as for belial. What do you all think?

So as far as the tournament I tool second outta 29 and won 75 dollars store credit! WooT! But now thats over back to reality. lol I am about 45 percent done with the stern guard/pedro cantor and more pics to come soon.

Hello out there!! It has been just shy of 2 months since my last update. Many people would call this progress a failure lol. I only the other hand do not.

As I had stated originally this was just a side project to work on slowly between other things.

As ard boyz for fantasy approaches yet again I have been focued on painting my lizard men for the event (yes i know there's no paint score)

I have 99 percent of the way finished my imperial fists sternguard unit!!! Been a long time with a little work here and there. Be prepared for pictures in the next day or two!
