like the Russians, nicely done....what finish did you use on the Germans...seems kind of shiny...but otherwise great paint jobs.

Cripplers flames of war @ 2010/12/03 16:25:20

Post by: General_Crippler

I use the same varnish for them all, army painter shades and then Vallejo Matt varnish after weathering.

Camera flash and lighting is not great in the gararge either.

Cripplers flames of war @ 2010/12/03 16:38:28

Post by: legoburner

How have you found the german army painter spray on plastics? It seems fine on resin and metal for me, but on any plastic it seems to go on thick and stay thick. I've especially had trouble with plastic halftrack wheels and guns. Have you had a similar problem with it, or has it been alright in your garage?

I love your tanks, very impressive!

Cripplers flames of war @ 2010/12/04 08:13:27

Post by: General_Crippler

Thanks again for the great comments ;-) always nice to keep you motivated.

As for the sprays, I use the ones from battlefront, the soviet one is great, however the german dungleb and dark grey especially does not cover that well. So instead of overspraying and hiding much of the detail, several thin coats need to be sprayed.

For tanks, I spray once from the top, then stand on one side and spray, then the other, this should also allow you to spray the front back and bottom at the same time.

Cripplers flames of war @ 2010/12/06 14:01:17

Having just had a read through the new tides of war, I have just seen that the Panzerwerfer 42's are a german paratrooper option now and not for the panzer company!!!! Grrrr

Guess, I will have to use the old bocage book still!!!

Holy crap thats a lot of FoW! Man o man what i wouldnt do for an airbrush. Everything looks awesome. I especially like the soviet infantry though.

Cripplers flames of war @ 2010/12/06 14:22:58

Post by: legoburner

Looking good as ever. I like the way the airbrushed camo turned out on the panzer IV H schurzen too.

I personally find airbrushing more fun than brush painting and am quite astounded by how much easier and better it gets with each use - a very short learning curve compared to painting normally.

Why dont you airbrush a base coat on your infantry instead of brushing btw?

Cripplers flames of war @ 2010/12/06 15:17:24

Post by: General_Crippler

Hey thanks again, I get better support here, they I do over at warseer, maybe I am wasted over there!!!!!

I tend to use my airbrush for camo only and the brush for the rest. I also find the army painter uniform grey an excellent base coater, as it sticks well and is easy to paoint over with any color.

Just ordered two sheets of German reg plates from Doms decals, not to bad for £4 for 2 but postage was another £2 on top!!!!

Manged to drybrush the tiger and Panzer IV tracks today

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Shaded the tiger tonight as well ;-)

Cripplers flames of war @ 2010/12/08 09:36:43

Post by: General_Crippler

Decals and weathering on the tiger should be completed today.

Cripplers flames of war @ 2010/12/08 10:44:24

Post by: legoburner

So much progress! Are the tiger tracks the same as the other tracks you've painted? The base colour looks really bright in the photos. I've found I can save quite a bit of time on tracks by priming them black then painting the wheels instead of attaching them and priming them the colour of the tank then repainting the tracks. It also allows for a sloppier drybrush without worrying about hitting the main body of the tank.

The postage at Dom's Decals is harsh, I always end up ordering extra things that I'll never need just to make it a reasonable purchase. I have a drawer full of allied stars and finnish markings now as a result

Cripplers flames of war @ 2010/12/08 13:06:06

Post by: General_Crippler

No, I used to paint them boltgun metal, but they look to shiny, even after a black wash and shading. I have done the last Panzer IV tracks boltgun washed with devlan mud, not to much of a difference, but hey ho.

The tigers tracks have been painted using the early war method, which was saddle brown, then black shade washed, then dry brushed silver, then shaded!!!! A lot of effort for the tracks, but I do think they look better. I have done this also on the half-tracks and the Panzer II's.
I see where you are coming from with black tracks, might trial it on another unit!!!!

The tiger will eventually form part of the SS Heavy Panzer Battalion 101 consist of a full company of 14 Tiger I's, but I wanted to get some experience of airbrushing camo on the PZ IV's and Panthers, before starting on them.

Cripplers flames of war @ 2010/12/08 13:26:54

Post by: legoburner

Ah cool. I generally use the art of war 2 book method for german tracks (all Vallejo colours)

Tracks:

1. Black
2. heavy drybrush Flat Brown #140
3. light drybrush Cavalry Brown #137
4. patchy light drybrush Gunmetal Grey #179
5. Devlan mud wash

The key is just doing a tiny brush of gunmetal grey but I think the end result looks good. Should have pics of my tiger up by early next week at the latest, just need to weather it now the decals are done.

Cripplers flames of war @ 2010/12/08 21:08:26

Also arriving this week should be the SU100 tank killers, so will get these done asap. Although I have heard talk that the ROF 1 has killed these off a bit, but hey they have a massive gun!!!

Egad that was a lot of pics to scroll through. All look pretty great, I would lose my patience over all those models if I needed to paint them!

Cripplers flames of war @ 2010/12/17 14:45:57

Post by: General_Crippler

Lol, that is the trouble with the soviets, they are a swarm army, although the other armies can get quite large if you have a lot of different options.

Ok, SU100 have now had base colours done

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Just been shaded

Automatically Appended Next Post:
For any tanks that have camo, I use the army painter soft tone, for the basic soviet green, I use the strong tone and then drybrush after it has dried. With the soft tone, there is no need to do this.

Post by: General_Crippler

No me either lego, but I did drybrush them boltgun metal as well, so come out ok. I don't think there would have been a lot of difference if you had started with black.

No worries, my pleasure to share, the soviets are pretty easy to do.

Here are the steps

1. Undercoat soviet green using flames of war spray
2. Paint tracks boltgun metal
3. Shade using the army painter strong tone
4. Dry brush flames of war 894 Russian Green
5 . Drybrush graveyard earth
6. Matt Vanish vallejo spray

Thanks again for the grat comments, it really helps to keep me motivated.

Under the brush this week, will be a Wespe platoon and the rest of the tiger 1 ZUG.

Someone's had a productive week! Good stuff, thanks for the group photos so far. T34s look especially good with some nice weathering. Did you do the damage to the side of the one or was it like that when you got it? Looks good as war damage either way.

Cripplers flames of war @ 2011/01/04 21:10:52

Post by: General_Crippler

No worries and thanks.

The T34's where damaged when trying to glue the tracks on or have been damaged through use and transport. I used to leave them as they where, but I have now started painting the damage and weathering it to IMHO to look like great battle damage.

I also just noticed that I need to purchase another 7 T-34/85 as I only have 13!!!!!

Also today I nearly completed another two wespes and 2 Tigers ;-) Oh and started on another two soviet armoured cars

Post by: legoburner

ouch bad luck on the tiger. Are the Katyushas as much of a pain to assemble as I've always presumed. Are you going to do infantry for them too?

Cripplers flames of war @ 2011/01/18 13:25:48

Post by: General_Crippler

There where the original Katyushas and yes they where a complete nightmare to build, tiny metal components and super glue are not your best friend!!!!

The newer Katyushas are alot easier to build, the ones in the box set.

Yes there are some crew for these that will follow shortly;-)

The rest of the T34/85's arrived yesterday, so will finsih off that list as well and do another Tiger in the same batch!!!

Cripplers flames of war @ 2011/01/18 15:07:02

Post by: legoburner

How do the box set ones differ? Do they have individual rails to glue together or is it all one component? I thought that they were the same as the blister ones so have held off getting any for fear of having to assemble 8 of the evil things but if they are easier in the box set that makes them very tempting!

Cripplers flames of war @ 2011/01/19 16:44:37

Great thanks, look forward to seeing. I checked out a box of them today at hobbycraft but there was no diagram on the back that I could see to give me any hint of the construction of the boxed versions.

Cripplers flames of war @ 2011/01/20 14:53:55

Post by: General_Crippler

Ok from what I can remember, the original Katyushas had to be built by gluing all the individual components together, where as I am 99% sure that the rack came as a complete component. With the rockets and the truck carriage making it a 5 piece set instead of the original 20!!!

Here are the pictures of the newer one, it also has an attached stand and crew. The old ones where seperate.

Hope that helps

Two reasons really, one was they are a nightmare to glue and two, they broke off to easily.

Had a little battle today with the following forces

Germans

6 x Tiger 1

Soviet

5 x SU-100
3 x KV-5

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Turn 1 Soviets SU-100's open up on the tigers and destroy one of them

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Tiger return fire destroying two of the SU-100's

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Turn 2 Soviet fire does no damage, ROF 1 for all soviet tanks!!

Germans start to roll forward

Automatically Appended Next Post:
German fire sees the last of the SU100 off

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Turn 3

Soviet Fire fails to have any effect

Germans advance

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Turn 4

Soviets do no damage again

Tiger prowls round the side of the KV-5 but is unable to hit it.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Turn 5 End

Soviet fire does nothing

Germans unable to harm the KV-5

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Conclusion

Germans had a minor victory as they destroyed more tanks

The tigers could not damage the KV-5s due to there massive armour of 14 on the front and 12 on the side

The 88 has an AT of 13, so the best the germans could hope for would be a double bailout

At 795 points for three of them, they are not to bad, with the exeption of the ROF 1

Cripplers flames of war @ 2011/03/23 16:52:45

Battle report details to follow ;-)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The game played was encounter and the points was around 3600

Turn 1 USA
Sherman 105’s lay down a bombardment on the 88’s and destroy one of them
Turn 1 German
Panzer IV’s, 88’s all fail to score any hits on the sherman’s in the woods and the panthers fail to destroy the solitary 76 that rolls over the hill.
Turn 2 USA
The shermans making an attack into the village and flank the Panzer IV platoon, using there stabilisers to great effect, but only managing to bail on of the panzers. The 76’s crest the hill and fire on the panthers managing to destroy the 2IC. The 105’s had a few issues and where unable to zero in, the shermans in the woods where also ineffective as they failed to destroy any of the panzer IV’s.
Turn 2 German
Enraged by the death of there 2IC, the panthers return fire on the 76’s, destroying three of them and bailing another. Panzer IV’s return fire on the flanking shermans, destroying two of them and bailing another. The 88’s fire on the same shermans and manage to bail 2 of them. The panzer IV’s fire on the Shermans in the woods but fail to harm them.
Turn 3 USA
No reserves arrive this turn. The 76’s fail there morale check and disengage. The stuarts launch a daring flanking move and get 5 hits on one of the panthers and manage to destroy it with their little 37mm.
Turn 3 German
No reserves for the Germans either. The Panzer IV’s wipe out the rest of the Shermans in the village and the panthers blow up one of the stuarts. All other fire in ineffective.
Turn 4 USA
Still no reserves. The shermans in the woods manage to destroy 2 of the panzer IV’s and bail 2 of them. Stuarts continue making flanking moves and manage to bail another Panther. The 105’s fire score three hits on the shermans but fail to do any damage with their bombardment.
Turn 4 German
No reserves for the Germans either. Panzer IV’s fail the morale and pull out. Panzer IV’s destroy one of the shermans in the woods and one of the Sherman 105’s. Panther destroy another of the Stuarts.

Turn 5 USA
M10’s finally arrive. The shermans destroy 1 Panzer IV and bail another. The stuarts score two more hits on the panthers side but fail to penetrate.
Turn 5 German
Another Panzer IV platoon and a full battery of wespes arrive from reserve. Panzer IV’s destroyed two shermans in the woods and bail another. The panthers destroy another Stuart and they fail their morale check and pull out.
Last Turn 6 USA
The priests and Armoured infantry finally arrive from reserve. Shermans in the woods manage to destroy another Panzer IV.
Last Turn 6 German
The Puma’s and Armoured infantry arrive from reserve. Panzer IV’s destroy another Sherman in the woods and they fail there morale check and pull out. Panthers make a final push and fire on the armoured infantry, but fail to hit.

Conclusion
With none of the objectives captured it was the germans that came out the winner, due to more platoons destroyed or retreated. It was a close game with some daring moves from the Americans, but I think the superiority of the panzers won the day. The Sherman stabilisers are very good when launching attacks, as you can fire at full rate of fire at a -1 modifier.

USA Losses
76mm Sherman Platoon (5)
2 Full Sherman Platoons (10)
1 Full Stuart Platoon (5)
German Losses
Panzer IV Platoon (5)

Made a school boy error on the armoured infantry, I had given them all the half-tracks 50 cals, when three of them should have had AA MG's. You can upgrade them to 50's for another 15 points but only if they are from Hell on wheels!!! I have removed them now to have the correct AA MG's lol.

Nice to see some infantry from you! Halftracks are looking good, and I thought you would not be able to resist the train

Do you like the new battlefront buildings?

I do paint them from time to time, they just take a lot longer, but needed to do them, as they are needed for gaming ;-)

I still have another 5 carriages to add to it, the thing is massive!!!

Yeah they are very cool, plus the fact you don't need to paint them!!!
