What is your favorite 40k unit? It could be just a codex entry, or something much more specific. I'll list mine as an example:

Simple: Grey Hunters, Codex Space Wolves

More specifically, my preferred loadout is:

9 Grey Hunters, Power Fist, Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Mark of Wulfen, Rhino. Attached Wolf Guard in power armor with Power Fist & Combi-Melta.

It's mobile, tough, scoring, and is more than a match for other armies assault specialists. I used to take four of these units in my Space Wolf armies, but now I'm thinking of dropping terminators/land raider and taking taking 6! Squads of Chaos Marines, Daemon Princes, and Obliterators just bounce off these guys.

Name a unit. Any unit. This will kill it. And it has a 23-28" charge range, depending on what Ghazghkull rolls for difficult terrain.

Grey Knights for having a attitude and style so cold I got frost bite looking at their codex,

Chaos Sorcerer.

Nothing screams arrogance and sheer, unbridled power like a Chaos Sorcerer. I could be biased due to the sheer amount of fluff I've generated for Levistus, The Dread Sorcerer, but I guess that's what this thread's all about: bias!

In second place: The Archon. Equal helping of arrogance, only flaw is no sorcery.

(I like sorcery.)

It would be a toss up between a couple different things......

full size FARSIGHT bomb, diversified nob unit, 10 man diversified chaos termie unit, GK Terminators or a standard Assault Squad from the BA dex would all get honorable mention.

I would have to say full size scout bike squad with all the trimmings!

Harker and Imp Guard Vets are my favourite... its a fluff based attraction mainly as my regular opponent knows how demoralised I become at there loss and they rarely make it through 2 turns...

My Imp force never seems to be without ratling snipers... cheap and if they are unmolested by the opposition then they can take down many opponents.

I'm going to say that I love units that are mobile. Orks in wagons. Eldar vehicles. Bikers. Landspeeders.

40k is a game about movement. Being just out of charge range, or landing on the objective on the turn you want, etc. More movement means more options which means a greater ability to make the game yours.

Mega nobs: over looked unit, preforms well, cheap power klaw, cool model.

Wyches and bloodbrides: T3 6+ save unit that isn't afraid of much of anything in CC. 3 shardnets, a ton of attacks, 4++ in CC, agonizer sarge, and the ability to earn or receive FNP makes many units double or triple their points hesitate about being near this unit. I don't even hesitate (much) charging gene stealers with these.

SM Scouts. Infiltrate, scouts, move through cover, can get stealth, and a decent assortment of weapon options. In a game about missions, these guys have some good utility towards achieving victory. Even the scout bikers can be potent. The Space wolf version of scouts is downright mean.

Null zone librarian. Null zone might be a dead power against many opponents, same with the hood. But when you need either, they do such a great job it isn't funny.

Imperial Guard Hellhound w/heavy stubber and smoke launchers

I have always liked the story behind the Hellhound. Now they even look better with their new models. A fast tank armed with a heavy bolter, heavy stubber and an inferno cannon (arguably with the best flamethrower weapon in the game) is a model to be reckoned with. I generally run two in my army so that they can support one another. I usually keep them in reserve as a rapid deployment force to keep my opponent guessing.

GKGM with Terminator retinue. Master and squad both have Psycannons.

a hidden Force Weapon that ignores ID, a bunch of storm bolter shots, 6 Str6 Ap4(soon to be 3) shots, and Str6 power weapons to boot.

it's probably the best looking squad too. awsome models.

Necron Destroyer, in my humble experience

T5 WBB Jetbike with a big ol' Gauss cannon. Definitely one of the single greatest tank hunters in past rules editions (before they seriously toned down the ridiculous power of Gauss weapons).

Plague Marines. There's nothing like evil, gross looking dudes who can feel no pain. Some chaos guys are very obvious and over the top, like the Berzerkers, which is scary, but I think the silent, stoic Plague Marines take the cake on the scariness level.

Though I love all my IG and Ork units, my favorite has to be the super overpriced SM Honor Guard. A full unit of ten with chapter banner and all relic blades will absolutely destroy just about anything it touches. I know they are in no way cost effective I just love to throw them at a mob of 30 boyz and scream "Go nuts guys, FOR THE EMPEROR!"

As far as cool factor and awesome fluff, it's a tie between harlequins and Grey Knights. I like how harlequins are the guardians of all this forbidden knowledge that could tear down the universe, but they dress up like clowns and dance around the battlefield like they don't care. Grey Knights just possess a sheer level of bada$$ery that cannot be surpassed.

As far as power, I am a big fan of the baal predator and the furioso librarian. They make the BA army feel more unique than other SM chapters and can handle themselves in combat as well.

I am torn between 3 for my SM.TH/SS Termies / Sternguard ( especially with PK to add another scoring unit ) and i love to run a pimped out Vanguard squad.Its always massively overpriced,but with a TLPG/LC Razor and PP/PW/MB and a Relic Blade for the Sarge and the boys its fun whenever i put them on the table.And i definitely would not want to face Ghaz and his mates from across the table,that is one tough ork.

Valkyries with either a multi-laser or lascannon and multiple rocket pods with a blast large enough to kill a metric ton since they're defensive weapons.

12 inches and fire everything or move more and drop in some infantry.

None of his rules have anything to do with poison, unless there was a more recent codex than the one I'm looking at. No question that C'tan are obnoxious, but massed splinter fire should eat them alive.

Nope, not one of his rules make him immune or better against Poision than the average Necron warrior.

Its a tie between Termies w/ TH/SS and a Tac Squad with the following load out:

SGT w/ Powerfist and bolt pistol
1 marine with a flamer
1 marine with a ML
Rhino

4 bloodcrushers with all equip+skulltaker on juggernaut.
For 375 points 12 power weapon attacks with WS6 I5 S5 + 6 Power weapon attacks with WS8 I6 S5

Usually I should hit on 3 and wound on 3 not to mention that they are thoughnes 5 and have a 3+ save and a 5++ invul.

My Favorite unit in the game has to be Sisters Repentia.
Maybe they aren't really effective on the table top, but the idea of a mob of scantily clad devotees to the Emperor equipped with massive chain swords and whipped into a frenzy by a nearby preacher running across a battlefield to find absolution in death is pretty awesome.

For a more useful unit I would probably say that I really like Armored Sentinels with Plasma Cannons. They are expensive but when you put down other threats they often get ignored and can really ruin someone's day.

Necron scarabs - the unsung swiss army knife of the Necron army.

What can it do?
* Move like a jetbike
* 3 wounds per base
* Disruption field spells death to vehicles
* Deep striker

What can I do with them?
* Ablative armor for my Destroyer Lord or Spider
* Speed hump/tar pit - nothing wastes a turn for a really expensive enemy unit like a cheap bunch of scarabs
* Tank hunter with the disruption field
* Distraction unit

He doesn't have a greater chance of passing then failing. He, in fact, has the exact same chance to pass as he does to fail. The average roll on 3d6 isn't 10, it's 10.5.

To expand:

Ld 10 on 3d6 passes exactly 50% of the time (and fail 50% of the time). And, you have a 27.5% chance for 12 or higher.

His save (a 3++ invul, but you have to re-roll success) will fail 55.6% of the time. So, each power the Libby uses will result in a 15.3% chance for a would.

Summary:
50% chance to use power, 34.7% chance to fail power and no wound, 15.3% chance to fail and take a wound

Not exactly likely to cause a wound, but it's more effective than shooting him with a bolter.

My favorite against Dark Eldar is the Parasite of Mortex. He's faster than most of their non-HQs and spawns Rippers super quick. I've had him be practically on his own in the field and then suddenly have an entire army nearby to charge in and throw buckets of dice at my opponent(5 attacks per base on the charge).

My general favorite is the Zoanthrope though. Awesome model(except it's top-heavy to the extreme ), great fluff, and sweet rules. Yeah, yeah, Hive Guard usually outperform them, but they have utility in their AP3 blast and anti-tank shot. My opponent's reaction to the Warp Lance when it hits is just priceless too.

Me: "Ok, two hits on your battlewagon, glances on 2s."
Him: "It's front armor is 14...."
Me: "S10 AP1 Lance"
Him: "whaaaaaaaa?"

My Salamander assault terminators with TH/SS.
with 3+ invulnerable saves and all (free!) master crafted thunderhammers, there is not much in the game that can stand against them.

Especially in big games where I can use my Tu'shan conversion of Lysander!

Lysander with a squad of Salamander Assault Terminators with TH/SS will beat ANYTHING! (they can catch)


Diversified Nobz with Ghazghkull in a battlewagon covered by a KFF.

Name a unit. Any unit. This will kill it. And it has a 23-28" charge range, depending on what Ghazghkull rolls for difficult terrain.


My squad would instakill the crap out of your squad... but don't get me wrong... I love NOBS!!!

The humble IG Griffon.

Originally I just like the concept but now its utility has really grown on me.

Accurately dropping S6 pie plates on most infantry targets from cover is always good fun and being Ordnance as well can be quite effective on some low AV targets as well.

I love Tyranid Genestealers. Between their sneakyness, speediness, and killyness I never know which I love most. I think that they work very efficiently as intimidation weapons too. Stick a couple dozen of these on your opponent's flank and watch him suddenly avoid that entire hunk of map. Running a pure stealer list I once butchered an entire Tau army in about 3-4 turns which was delicious. I also really like how twisted and inhuman they look. You can almost see that human inspiration in their shape but it's been perverted into something really alien. They really remind me of H.R. Giger's Alien that way. Another reason: SPACE HULK!

Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned. 3 Eldar Warwalkers each with 2 scatter lasers. 24 st6 shots for 180 points. Bargain . Add in guide from a farseer and they are a major threat to anything apart from AV 12+.

3X Armoured Setneils with Plasma Cannons. I know this unit is Supposed to be horrible, but in nearly every game I've used them in they end up being amazing. The trick is put them in a list thats all ready got alot of tanks so they don't feel like as big of a threat as they can be. Hands down my favorite unit in the Guard Codex.

Scout bikes in a DoA army.

If the army deep strikes the scout bikes outflank.

If the BA army starts on the board and goes first the scout bikes alpha strike enemy vehicles in the form of a turn 1 charge before they can move.

If the BA army goes 2nd and starts on the board they turbo boost in front of my army to give everybody else cover while the T5 3++ cover 4+ FNP scout bikes take the brunt of enemy fire.

The chance to pass or fail is exactly 50%. Also, the Space Marine Librarian does not have a 3++ save. He does not have an invulnerable save at all. So if you take a perils every other turn if you only cast 1 power per turn, you will take a wound.

I think it's more likely that they will count as scoring units with a specific HQ or hardware upgrade. They need to be able to score, but every army consisting of nothing but 6 units of crisis suits would be a boring codex.

I would have to say that may favorite unit, even though I don't run it often because it is a huge point sink and not the best tactically, is a full 10 marine assault terminator squad armed with a mix of TH/SS and lightning claws, led by a reclusiarch in term armor and accompanied by a sanguinary priest in term armor. What can I say? I love terminator armor. Libarian dreads are a close second just for coolness factor...they seem to go boom very early due to target priority but are awesome in theory.

I beg to differ. Sure, Nurgle's fat kids have the whole gross factor going on, but take a moment to consider what's going to happen once those Noise Marines catch you.

They're going to rape you.

A lot.

Like, really, don't just gloss over the word 'rape' here. These guys have had millennia to perfect their craft (which is rape). They're not going to be satisfied with a quicky. This might take months to finish.

And then they're going to melt your flesh while you're still alive and drink the resulting sludge, and shortly after they'll grind up your bones and snort them, because nothing sets your brain on fire like powdered Imperialist.

So... Still think Plague Marines are scarier?

If they get within bolter range you're screwed... but Causing 24 wounds on a 30 man gaunt squad is amazing.

Being able to immobilize vehicles without terrain adaptations 1/6 of the time is amazing

watching your guys teleport out of close combat, leaving a base to base to base to base cluster of a carnifex, genestealers, and termagaunts and being to open up with 8 str 6 templates at ap 5?

oh... and it poops out a techmarine when it dies ^_^

An AV10 vehicle that you only need to glance to destroy. Alternately, you just need to kill a single space marine at range.

That and it only fires small blast templates.

Against huge noobs, I could see it being quite useful, but anyone who has ever heard of an autocannon or a missile launcher or 2" spacing can easily negate this threat.

Ailaros, my favorite unit is sub-par in 99 percent of SM lists. It happens to have been useful to me, and more than that, vastly amusing.

It fills a spot in one list that I happen to run, and does this extremely well... my experience would doubtlessly change when I play against other people and armies but so far, it's done a good job. I'm not saying that it's as good on as broad a basis as many of the units in this thread are, merely that it can be good in two rolls, horde infantry killing and disruption.

It needs to be set up right and it needs to be protected, and sometimes I mess up and it dies without doing much, but other times it works wonders. Again, against someone like you, who I've seen make full use of 2" spread, it would be less useful, but my army isn't based around the t-fire and, while I make no claims to be able to beat you, being unable to mazimize the effectiveness of two 100 point units in a large battle won't hurt me terribly.

Once again, this isn't to say that it is as good as nobz or t-wolves or scoring terminators or hammernators. But it does what it does very well for the points that you spend on it.

Furioso Dreadnoughts, loaded with a Frag cannon and Heavy flamer. Shreds almost any infantry unit it hits, can pen or glance vehicles, and the AV13 is such a magic number against frag and krak grenade equipped soldiers

Really, I have two.

On a personal level, I love hormagaunts. Nothing screams vicious, swarming death like the hormagaunt. By all rights, it should be something terrifying. The thing moves fast down the field, leaping through cover. Even when you kill the synapse creature behind them, they just keep rushing forward. My only issue with them is they don't get flesh hooks (read:frag grenades) anymore, and biomorphs are too expensive compared to the gaunt and gargoyle. The only time I really find it worth it to pick up the fellows is when I've already bought Hive commander.

On a more practical level, Gargoyles are amazing. Cheap, fast, versatile little buggers that you run as a throwaway screen (combined with gaunts, it's almost impossible not to give even your monsterous creatures cover saves), Transport killer (it's hilarious to kill everything inside a chimera by giving them nowhere to disembark), or monsterous creature killer. They can even deep strike and usually move even faster than hormagaunts! The only time I go without them is when I'm starving for points.

It used to be a mutant boss from the eye of terror codex with a powerfist (yes its not a unit... just a charecter within one) but that guy clocked in at 31 points and had 4 S:6 power fist attacks (5 on the charge). His unit was mostly cannon fodder and essentially just got in the way of things but that little guy bagged so many tanks, inquisitors, chaos lords and even a few GKT's he became a model to fear in my little group.

Nowadays i prefer the humble wraithlord. Even just the 1, preferably 2. They may not be that effective as they can go down quite easily but to see that trickle of sweat fall down the brow of your opponent when the lord is about 10" from his raider, on 1 wound, and his last lascannon shot misses...

Hmm, I'm going to have a toss up between 2. First is Kharn with 7 berserkers (magic 8 number and all), mostly because so long as kharn is attached to a unit, he never actually misses in close combat. Ever. Hit the enemy? Well lets not get picky now.

my favourite unit is definitely a LR crusader filled with 7 TH/SS or 2LC (it doesn't really m,atter, they cick ass in ANY given loadout) with a terminator captain (2LC cuz of his über I).

In imaginationland, Shining Spears, hands down. One of the least numerous (ie most elite) Eldar aspects. Essentially future knights on one-man aircraft, with lances (that shoot lasers).
Unfortunately both the models and rules are lacking a little something - they're not top on the field, and while it's a very cool idea (tilting armour! awesome!), the models are a rather static looking set of metal-plastic hybrids. Here's hoping that when a new codex eventually comes round, the shining spears benefit from a new jetbike model, and are enthroned as the baddest, coolest, deadliest close combat shock troops in the game.
This possibility, if it comes to pass, will immediately mean that everyone takes shining spears and I will look like a bit of a tool.

Favorite assault unit: 10 Hekatrix Bloodbrides with Syren and Agoniser and 3 Hydra Gauntlets. At max, 5 4+ PW attacks and 54 regular attacks on the charge, +1 Attack combat drug means 6 4+ PW attacks, 64 regular on the charge!!!

I'd go with either Necron Wraiths or Destroyers. I'm gonna say Hive Tyrant's are my favorite Unit. Give em some Guard, Armoured Shell, and it becomes very hard to kill. Plus, the weapons he can use are great, especially the Bonesword. And Paryoxism will pretty much turn any unit into a crap unit just waiting to get the crap beaten out of it.

Plus, the odel itself looks amazing.

Those guys beast on the table, The've caused Blood Angels to run from close combat in shear terror, 10 guys with strength 6 power weapon, A 2+ save, and a chapter banner who get 4 attacks each on the charge, and oh if you take Khan they turn into strength 7 power weapons at iniiative 5! who can also leave combat whenever they please! its just a giant wrecking ball!

I like Blood Angels Honour Guard with a Libby, storm shields and lightning claws all around with the banner. 25 power weapon attacks, rerolling to hit with the libby's power, then 20 of those with rerollable to wound. Now throw in FC so I5 S5 on the charge, a 3+ Invul, and FNP, This is lot of fun unit that people ignore due to other more visible threats and can take out most units on the charge.

19 gretchin with a runtherd. Seriously, I love this unit. I love seeing what kind of kills these guys can rack up in close combat. They never get shot because there is always something scarier out there, and by the time they get in the fight the enemy is so depleted that they can actually win combat. In one tournament alone my grots took out a unit of Incubi, a unit of wolf scouts, and a unit of imperial guard vets. 20 models on the charge is quite a few attacks after all.... and they could even kill something with the assault weapons too... although I do believe you have to jump up and down and do a dance if that happens.

The 'and' was dividing the aspects between the two models, wraiths being able to move 12-24" through anything and Destroyers having the Str. 6 Gauss Guns.

I enjoy an IG vet squad with a plasma pistol, 3 meltas, and demolitions (which gives them all meltabombs and a demo charge) If they don't kill a vehicle with melta and plasma fire, the meltabombs will in CC

Very few representing Eldar here, so I'll bite. First I gotta go with a full Jetbike Council, loaded with 6-8 destructors. Opponents are just like "HOW many heavy flamers??" ;D And jetbike movement is fun as all get out And then since you're not in a tank and you can get LoS you can drop mind war on doods which is hilarious too

And I love a fully tricked out Warp Spider unit with a fusion gun/power weapon Autarch. Blasting guys at such close range and then jumping out is so annoying but oh so awesome Withdraw is tight too if you have to use it

I like my Predator. It has lascannons on the side and an autocannon turret. I like having that many weapons for so few points, and from the front it is really tough. I line up at the back of the table with my Rhino and Razorback on its sides so it can't be shot from the side, so it's really hard to kill unless someone assaults it.

Whats that? Dante deep strikes behind my tanks using Descent of Angels? Hey, Marbo was behind that piece of grass. cue Pokemon-style "Demolition pack, I choose YOU!" and all of a sudden your opponents premier command squad is nothing but a muddy stain in a crater.

Kairos The Fateweaver is my current favorite. 3++ re-rollable and the 6" bubble of "NONE SHALL PASS" is cool enough but being able to throw 3 nasty things at 2 different targets (including spawning people while in CC) just kicks butt.

I spawned Vulkan, Dante, and a Canoness in a three game tourney with him... and he never died (or ran away) in all 3 games. Granted I have only put him on the table for those three games, the first time he takes a wound a rolls a 10 I may change my tune... ;-)
